Trade Talk

The NFL’s trade deadline is November first this year, which is a week away. The Eagles are 6-0 and pretty healthy. There are no major holes in the roster. Still, you always want to see who’s available and might help you in a season where you’re a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Let’s talk about the areas where the Eagles might want some help.

DE – Derek Barnett was lost for the season with an ACL injury. He was expected to be part of the pass-rushing rotation. Tarron Jackson took his spot on the depth chart, but has barely played. The coaches might talk about how much they believe in him, but I always believe actions speak louder than words. Jackson isn’t playing. And the team has had a 14-point lead in each game. There have been chances for backup pass rushers to play.

The Eagles don’t need to break the bank for a DE. They have Sweat, BG and Reddick already in place. But adding a quality rusher to the mix would be smart. The key is finding the right guy at the right price.

SAF – Marcus Epps and CJ Gardner-Johnson are both playing good football. Safety went from a question to a strength. What happens if one of them gets hurt? That happened in the Dallas game and K’Von Wallace took the place of CGJ. Dallas had their most offensive success in that time. Wallace has been disappointing in his young career. The coaches are mixing him into some 3-safety looks this year so that shows some level of trust, but he’s just not a player you want starting.

I think the team would be smart to go get a veteran safety to add to the mix. The Eagles pass defense is the best in the league right now and you don’t want that changing if there is an injury.

RB – Miles Sanders is having the best season of his career. Kenny Gainwell and Boston Scott are effective backups. But you would love to add another good runner to the backfield. The 2017 closed out games by feeding LeGarrette Blount and Jay Ajayi, two big, physical runners. The Eagles don’t have anyone quite like that on the current roster. Size aside, they could also look to upgrade on talent. If anything happens to Sanders, the run game will suffer. It would be great to have a RB who you wanted to feed the ball to behind him.

WR – The Eagles have as good a 1-2 punch at WR as you could want. Quez Watkins gives them a speedy number three option. Zach Pascal is a good role player. Watkins doesn’t look like he’ll ever be a play you feed the ball to. He seems more like a complementary piece. If the team could add a receiver at the right price, that might give the passing game a boost. TB and GB have had WR issues this year. Even with Hall of Fame QBs, those passing games have struggled. Always keep your eyes open for WR help, but make sure the fit is right. Anyone targeted would have to be okay with being a backup and having limited opportunities.

RS – If there is a need, it would be for a return specialist. Britain Covey has had some 12 to 15 yard punt returns, but he lacks the speed to really break a long one. The long KOR for the season is 23 yards. Think about how an explosive returner ignited Dallas in the Sunday night game. There is real value in having a good returner. The Eagles are good enough overall to get by with Covey/Watkins, but an upgrade would help.

Now let’s talk about some players who make sense. One key thing to remember is that teams aren’t looking to dump great players. Teams that are struggling are willing to deal players they don’t see as part of their future. Or a team might be willing to deal a young player that isn’t fitting in for some reason.

DE Jerry Hughes – Leads the Texans with 4 sacks. Veteran DE has played well, but the Texans are 1-4-1 and would probably like to add a draft pick if possible. Hughes has been a starter for most of his career, but might be comfortable coming off the bench for a Super Bowl contender. The price should be reasonable for a 34-year old DE.

DE Robert Quinn – Posted 18.5 sacks last year, but only had one this season. Still a disruptive edge player. The Pats used double teams on him multiple times on Monday night. Quinn showed a good motor and made a couple of hustle plays. He is 32 so you wouldn’t want to give up much for him. Could be a good fit for what the Eagles are looking for. The Bears have a promising rookie behind him so they might be open to dealing Quinn.

DE Bradley Chubb – More of a longshot. Chubb is a talented pass rusher in the prime of his career. This isn’t a guy that would come cheap. Has good size at 6-4, 275. Comfortable at LB and DE. Has played in Vic Fangio’s system so should already have a good feel for what the Eagles are doing.

DE Brian Burns – Probably a waste of discussion. Has 30.5 sacks in his 3.5 years. Long, athletic edge who can make plays. The Panthers have leaked the absurd rumor that they’ve already turned down an offer of a pair of first round picks. Howie should make the call to see what the real price is, but I don’t think this move is likely to happen.

***

SAF DeShon Elliott – The Lions defense has been awful for most of the year so trading away a starting DB doesn’t make much sense, but they are 1-5 and need resources for the future. Elliott isn’t anything close to a star player, but he’s been an effective starter. If the price was right, he would make sense. Has played for the Ravens and Lions and has 27 career starts.

SAF Rodney McLeodJimmy Bama had this as an idea. McLeod knows the scheme so that would make sense. He’s a high character player so I think coming in as a backup/rotational player would be okay with him. And he does have Super Bowl experience if my memory serves correctly.

SAF Jabril Peppers – Peppers is a role player for the 3-4 Patriots (fun to type that last part). I could see them being willing to trade him. He is a versatile DB. Also has return ability. Could be a good role player for a team making a playoff run. Peppers was a productive starter for the Giants in 2020 and he’s only 27 years old.

***

RB Kareem Hunt – This is the move that probably is the most interesting and exciting. Hunt is a very talented RB. He’s the backup to Nick Chubb in Cleveland. Hunt will be a free agent in March so the Browns might be willing to deal him in the middle of a down season. They used a lot of assets in the Watson trade so adding picks would make some sense. Hunt would be an excellent fit. He is a gifted runner and talented receiver. He and Sanders would make a heck of a 1-2 punch. The question is his price. The Eagles aren’t going to overpay for a rental. They could consider re-signing him. The question then is how much they want to pay a RB.

RB Cam Akers – A bit of a mystery. Akers is a talented, young RB. Something happened or is going on behind the scenes and his time with the Rams is over. Teams will have to figure out what the issue is to decide if he’s worth pursuing.

***

WR/RS Kalif Raymond – The Lions have a couple of injured receivers so that would be key to Raymond’s availablity. They might need him, even in a 1-5 season. If available, he would make sense. He’s a good role player and returner. Raymond is small, but has good speed.

WR/RS Marquez Callaway – Size. Speed. Ability. Callaway is a talented player who checks all the boxes. But somehow he’s the #5 receiver for the Saints. Callaway posted good numbers last year, but the team doesn’t seem to trust him to be more than a role player. He’s only got 10 catches this year. Could be a good insurance policy for the Eagles and he has PR/KOR experience.

WR/RS K.J. Hamler – The former 2nd round pick caught 30 passes as a rookie. He got hurt last year and only played in 3 games. This year he’s only caught 5 passes, but is averaging 22.6 ypr. Hamler was a stud at Penn State and he’s got very good speed. He’s only 5-9, 178 so he’s not ideal for every system. Hamler was a returner at PSU, but has done very little of that in the NFL. Things have not worked out for him in Denver, but he is talented and has upside.

The Eagles are in a position of strength. They can be choosy shoppers, looking for the right player at the right price. Howie Roseman inquires about any player he thinks can help the team. The Eagles made a low-ball offer on Christian McCaffery. Why not? You never know when your offer might be the best one.

Expect a lot of rumors between now and next week. Here is one tidbit from Jimmy Bama.

He later corrected himself on the date. It is 11/1.

Hunt is the player who really does make a lot of sense. Other teams will have interest. The question really does come down to price. What are you willing to give up for him?

I also like Hughes as a target. The price would be right and I think he would be a good fit.

Stay tuned. And be ready to make your way through a lot of bogus rumors.
