Being Thankful

I spent most of the day surrounded by Cowboys and Patriots fans so that made for an interesting Thanksgiving. You go where the food is and today…that meant hanging out with Boyz and Pats peeps. They’re actually good people. They just cheer for evil teams.

On the ride back home I started thinking about the football season and what a magical year it has been so far. Eagles fans have a lot to be thankful for.

Nick Sirianni – He wasn’t on my list when the Eagles started looking for a coach. I might have heard his name, but I sure didn’t know a thing about him. I wanted Brandon Staley and was ticked when he went to the Chargers. Now, I can say thank you to the Chargers for hiring Staley. And thank you to the Eagles for hiring Sirianni.

Jalen Hurts – The Falcons and Steelers had picks close to the Eagles in the second round back in 2020. Thankfully both teams passed on Hurts. Atlanta took DL Marlon Davidson, who has one career start. The Steelers took Chase Claypool. He flashed big talent, but was inconsistent and got traded to the Bears. Both teams would love to have a do-over and take Hurts. The Eagles took a ton of criticism for drafting Hurts. It is fair to question the wisdom of the move based on how things were at that moment, but boy did it work out as a long term move. The Eagles found their QB and didn’t have to spend a ton of resources to do it.

James Bradberry – The Giants did the Eagles a huge favor by holding onto Bradberry as long as they did. That killed the market for him and the Eagles were able to sign him to a reasonable deal. Bradberry has been outstanding in coverage this year and he’s a big part of them having the best secondary in football.

CJ Gardner-Johnson – The Saints did the Eagles a huge favor by holding onto CGJ as long as they did. Most teams had set rosters so the Eagles weren’t bidding against the whole league. That allowed them to acquire CGJ for a cheap price. CGK has been outstanding in coverage this year and he’s a big part of them having the best secondary in football.

Linval Joseph / Ndamukong Suh – I’m thankful the big fellas got tired of sitting on the couch and watching The Price is Right. They decided they wanted to play and signed reasonable deals with the Eagles. The DL issues went away immediately.

AJ Brown – The Titans did the Eagles a huge favor holding onto AJ as long as they did. Most teams had already made their big moves so the Eagles weren’t bidding against the whole league. That allowed them to acquire AJ for a reasonable price. AJ has been a great addition and is a big part of the reason the Eagles have one of the best offenses in the league.

Jason Kelce – I’m thankful that Kelce decided not to retire. He has been a joy to watch this year. How often can you say that about the guy who plays center for your NFL team?

Brandon Graham – It is weird to see BG as a backup, but he’s played well. He had 2.5 sacks of Carson Wentz. BG came up with a huge sack of Matt Ryan on Sunday to basically seal the win over the Colts.

Week 2 – Justin Jefferson is god’s gift to football and the Eagles are the worst team in sports history for not taking him. That’s all we heard leading up to the Week 2 showdown between the Eagles and Vikings. Darius Slay shut him down, limiting JJ to 6-48. For at least one week. we didn’t have to hear about Jefferson’s greatness. The world praised Slay and the Eagles secondary while ripping on the Vikings. We’ll have to live with the Jefferson mistake for a while. It wasn’t a big deal after that game.

Let’s hope we have even more to be thankful for when the season is over.

Wow. That surprises me. The Eagles have had a lot good pass rushers in the past 30 years. Thought someone else would have done it between now and 1991.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
