The Eagles defense played like crap for the first half. They woke up and pitched a shutout in the second half. The Eagles offense played well for part of the third quarter. They played like crap for the entire game. How’s that for detail?
Minshew Mania is officially dead. Gardner Minshew is now 0-2 as a starter, losing a shootout and a tough, defensive battle. He was picked off twice in Dallas. He threw a pick-six against the Saints. Beyond that, Minshew just looked jittery today. He was sacked six times. Protection wasn’t ideal, but it felt like half of those were on him. His pocket presence wasn’t good and there were plays where he held the ball too long.
Minshew didn’t get much help.
- His offensive teammates committed too many penalties. There were three false start penalties on the OL. Jason Kelce wiped out a nice gain by being upfield on a pass. Just dumb stuff.
- The officials made a horrible holding call on Landon Dickerson wiped out a TD run by Kenny Gainwell. That was a crucial moment.
- The coaches kept calling pass plays against a team that is one of the best pass defenses in the league. The Saints are more vulnerable to the run.
It was one of those days.
The offensive highlight was a 78-yard TD pass to AJ Brown. He caught it around midfield and then raced for the score. That was great, but too little, too late. The Eagles didn’t get a first down until the :34 mark of the second quarter. That’s not a typo. They almost went the entire first half without a first down. They came into the game as the #1 scoring team in the league. The Eagles didn’t have a red zone snap all game long.
The Eagles defense came out and played zone early. Andy Dalton lit them up with short passes that moved the chains, but the defense only allowed one TD all game. They gave up 13 points. They came up with 7 sacks and an INT. They played well after the slow start. They just didn’t play the amazing game that Minshew and the offense needed.
Brandon Graham did come up with 2 sacks.

He’s now got 11 for the year, a career high. Very happy to see him playing so well in his 13th season. BG got more snaps than expected due to an injury to Josh Sweat. The young DE slammed into the Saints FB on a short yardage play and hurt his neck. Sweat was carted off and taken to the hospital. He will go home tonight so that’s obviously great news. Sweat had movement in all of his extremeties. The Eagles were being very cautious due to that being a neck injury.
Two straight losses late in the season is not a good look. I thought the Eagles would be focused and play well today. I couldn’t have been more wrong. They were a mess. If the Dallas loss didn’t get their attention, this one certainly did.

The Eagles can still win the division and the top seed next week when they play the Giants. But there won’t be any resting of starters. Next Sunday goes from meaningless to critical. We’ll have to wait for updates on Jalen Hurts. My guess is that he’ll play, but that is purely a guess.
Today’s loss wasn’t about Hurts absence. The rest of the team had enough talent to win that game. They just couldn’t make so many mistakes and be so sloppy. The Saints came in and played tough, physical football. They battled. The Eagles played like they all went to a great New Year’s Eve party and were hungover. Disappointing to see this team be so bad with so much on the line.
That said, this loss won’t mean a thing if the Eagles fix the mistakes and go win next Sunday. One more chance to get the win they need.
