Super Bowl Talk

The big game is just over a week away. Something tells me this week will take forever to go by. The good news is that we’ll have plenty of time to talk about the game. Here are some random thoughts bouncing around my head.

Coaching Advantage

Most people are saying Andy Reid gives KC a coaching advantage. I totally get that argument. Reid is a Hall of Fame coach and he’ll be in his fourth Super Bowl (plus two as an assistant). Nick Sirianni will be in his first Super Bowl. Both guys are outstanding coaches.

That said, Reid didn’t exactly shine in his previous Super Bowls. He lost to the Patriots in 2004 and I don’t think anyone would say that was a great performance by him or the Eagles. Reid lost in 2020 when the Bucs beat KC 31-9. The one time Reid did win, KC trailed the Niners 20-10 going into the fourth quarter. Patrick Mahomes came alive late and KC won 31-20.

Reid is a great gameplanner and has a ton more Super Bowl experience than Sirianni. When it comes to gameday, we’ll see. Sirianni has been masterful at keeping his team focused. He’s had the right message for them all year long. The Eagles haven’t trailed in the postseason, dominating both games.

KC might have the coaching advantage next Sunday, but I don’t think it is as clear cut as most are making it out to be.

Up Front

Last week I wrote that SF had a good OL and DL. The Eagles were simply better. Well, KC has a good OL and DL. The Eagles are simply better.

I don’t know if that will be enough for the Eagles to win the game, but the formula has worked great this season. The OL is the foundation of the run game, which is one of the best in the league. The OL also does a great job in pass protection. Most lines have a specialty. The Eagles are freaks because they are so good in both areas.

We got some great news on Jeff Stoutland.

There is no salary cap when it comes to coaching. When you have a special coach like Stoutland, pay him big bucks. He’s given the Eagles good OLs for a decade now. He’s developed stars, starters and backups. Keeping him is critical to future success. Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson won’t be here forever. Stoutland will need to develop their successors. Cam Jurgens looks like he will be part of that solution.

Stoutland is great because he can teach blocking, but also understands the X’s and O’s of the run game. His college background and time with Chip Kelly have to be important in that side of things.

Do you ever get tired of watching OL/run game breakdowns?

Special Team

There are times when I don’t think any of us appreciates just how good the Eagles are this year.

Wow. Those are some crazy numbers.

This is a complete team. They can do everything well. Great running game. Outstanding passing attack. Best pass rush in the league. Best pass defense in the league. Solid run defense. There just isn’t a real hole.

The run defense was leaky at times, but the addition of Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh has helped that.

Even special teams ended up being a good unit.

I can’t recall such a complete Eagles team. Normally there is one glaring weakness. Howie Roseman did a masterful job in putting the roster together and the coaches have done a great job at getting the most out of the players. Who’s underachieving? Maybe Quez Watkins, the #3 receiver.

Special team.

Cowboys Update

No one cares too much about Dallas right now, but this is too good not to share.

They hired Brian Schottenheimer to be their new OC. His resume leaves a little to be desired.

Yikes.
