Andy’s Future

Sunday will be Andy’s home finale as HC of the Eagles.  If you get a chance to give him a cheer, please do.  He’s done a lot more good than bad and deserves at least a moment of appreciation for that.

What is his future?

Some think he should take a year off.  I just don’t think Big Red is wired like that.  I think he’ll be coaching elsewhere in 2013.

Some have asked if he could stay with the Eagles in some kind of advisory capacity.  I guess that is possible.  I see him as wanting to stick with coaching.  He loves his players and his gameplans.

There would be some logic to taking a year and getting off the field.  It would let him evaluate the way he does things.  It would let him get refreshed and ready for action.

I just wonder if he sees how Bill Cowher has stepped away and might never come back.  I think that notion would scare Andy.  He lives for coaching.

    At first I thought SD was a lock. I’m now thinking KC would be a better fit. Rookie QB (Smith or Barkley). High picks on the OL, good RB and TE. Good S and LB. DL needs work, but he does have some pieces to work with. And in that market, he can take his time and do it right. Maybe Juan, Pat and Brad join him there.

      Sad to think about it being AR;s last home game. He should have had SB ring in 2004, if Donovan didn’t poop out on the last drive, and Belichick’s deviate spy program. Hate going to the unknown, but it could be a good thing, just have to wait and see how it all shakes out. Good luck AR, there were a lot of good memories. It seemed to me, he did better with less talent.

          And kudos to whoever aired the super bowl that year, having a player poop on the field without television viewers ever noticing is a masterful job of on air direction.

    What do you think of CB Jordan Poyer out of Oregon State? He is my favorite CB so far, even though Milliner and Banks are more known players. Do you think he could drop to our 2nd?

    He has Revis-light potential n my opinion.

    Another favorite of mine is CB Bradley Roby. What do you think of him?

    I watched a bunch of Lotuleleis games the other night, and I came away highly impressed by his level of play – in the first half of the games. His first step seems to be second to none. However, he seemed to wear out as the games went by and became an ordinary DT after 30 minutes. Is that a bad sign? Or is it just unnatural for a DT to play every snap like he does at Utah?

    Why do you think Reid picked Foles over Wilson? Is it because Foles has the physical build and arm, and Andy wanted to use him as a project QB turned starter (Rodgers)? As of now, Wilson seems to be the much better pick, but does Foles have the potential to make the next step, or is he going to be another Kevin Kolb?

      Wilson was picked before Foles in the draft. It was rumored after the draft that AR had targeted Wilson with that pick.

        I think they wanted Wilson all along, but weren’t gonna trade up to get him. I know Wilson is lighting it up right not, but I like the Foles pick. I’m knida tired of these midget QB’s.

      Weird comparison with Rodgers. We know he sat the bench for three seasons behind Favre, but he was neck-and-neck with Alex Smith for the No. 1 pick that year, and it was regarded then and now as a remarkable steal that the Packers got him in the 20s.

      How is that a project in comparison with Foles?

    I think Reid is the poster child for coaches who should take a year off. His life and his choices, but it would seem the family could use him around. Also the most recent long-term, one-team guys who took a year to recalibrate, Jeff Fisher and Mike Shanahan, seem to be doing okay for themselves.

    Ultimately though I think it would come down to the quality of the openings. Except for Cam, I wouldn’t really want to go to Carolina. No to Jacksonville or the Jets or Cleveland or the other teams that may or may not fire.

    San Diego though, don’t think anyone would blame Reid for jumping on a chance to work there and with Philip Rivers. Also if Ron Rivera and Pat Shurmur get dumped, and Spags is canned in NO, most of the guys from the Reid tree will be available for hire, and he can get the band back together. If he waits a year, he might need all new assistants.

    Unrelated, I work in an office where the people have a very vested interest in how the NFC East shakes out. I’m a known Eagles fan … people were trying to convince me to get excited for the Eagles to upset the Redskins. I told them that last year I wanted them to finish strong, but this year, knowing a regime change is coming, I’d gladly laugh with delight if they upset the Redskins, and I’d never actively root for them to lose … but I can’t really get up for this game. I just don’t see where winning really helps, especially if you’re set to maybe draft top five, and you’re going to change regimes and not come into the next year with much “development” or “confidence” from these last two games.

    Anyone want to tell me why I’m wrong for feeling that way?

      I can’t, because I agree. The only reason you root for a win is because it’s Andy Reid’s last home game with the Eagles, but I think the Bucs game was sufficiently cathartic.

      On the other hand, while I don’t really feel strongly about the Redskins, they have some truly annoying fans. Ruining their playoff hopes wouldn’t be terrible.

        Redskins fans used to represent blind faith to me, getting amped each offseason under Snyder only to have their dreams crushed by November. They’ve been sufficiently humbled over the years to the point where they no longer rub me the wrong way … as often.

      I actually thought exactly the same. If AR goes to San Diego and Pat Shurmur and Brad Childress are canned from the Browns (would be a huge mistake imo, give them atleast 2 seasons with a new QB) and Rivera is canned from the Panthers (again would be huge mistake because the D is improving and Newton is playing great again), that Reid could almost assemble his old squad minus JJ.

    Here’s a silly question for next time you do a Q&A: Colleges do it all the time, but pros rarely (Bucs/Raiders/Gruden only one I can think of off top) … Could the Eagles poach an active coach?

    Despite it being unlikely, if yes, who would you take? Part of me thinks they need like a Mike Tomlin personality at the top, and then let the coordinators do what they do.

    For available candidates, I want Shaw or Kelly (so far), but what do you think about Bruce Arians? If Pagano gets his job back, Arians should be a hot name for what he’s done with the Colts. He’s had other stops. Maybe Zimmer or someone else is a more solid pro name to throw his had in the ring, but Arians is intriguing. Thoughts?

    I want to see Reid coach for Dallas. That would be a dream scenario. Then, he’d be on “football’s biggest stage” and the entire world could see him for who he has become. They’d see his bypassed philosophies his time management, his half time adjustments, etc. He would truly be exposed. I don’t want to see him go to SD where he could hide because no in SD cares about the Chargers.

      Damn, dude, so not only do you predict he will fail miserably, but you hope for it too? Moreover you don’t want to just see him just humiliated, you want to see him humiliated as publicly as possible. How do you hate somebody that you don’t know THAT bad.

      I hope this is a tongue and cheek post….if not….this just flat out terrible. The ending has not been good by any means but to ignore this mans body of work is just ignorant. Eagles football in the mid to late 90′s was just a joke. Reid changed that perception and this is a top organization, even now. Overall he is leaving the organization in much better shape then what it was before he was here.

      No, he’s serious. I remember this clown from TATE. Yeah, Andy was dead wrong with that whole “it’s a passing league” thing, right? We’ve only had 4 recent superbowls won by teams with no running game. Maybe if Andy had listened to you and gotten us that “big back”.

    T Law I know you disagree but I dont think Andy is leaving Philly. Worse case is he will be either Head Coach or Executive VP but not both. He has made some moves that leaves me to believe he will be back.

    Really make sense consider how many college LTs cant make the transition to RT in the NFL. The question then becomes, can Mathis make the transition to RG and then try out Watkins at LG?

      Great article, and very good question. As everyone keeps saying, Watkins does have the athletic ability. It is strange how much it affects some players though. Didn’t Reid say a few weeks ago, that he also thought that Watkins would be a better LG? Well, I guess a backup LG is ok value for a 1st round pick… meh, okay, bad humor!

        Just look at Tyron Smith, all the talent in the world, but is really struggling at LT. Same with King Dunlap, really struggled at RT, but is a good backup at LT.

    Any possible interest in Marc Trestman or Kirk Ferentz as HC after Andy?. I remember reading that Trestman impressed the Colts in the interview process. Ferentz might be the right guy to help solidify our o-line, and now that his son has graduated the NFL is more of a possibility.

    I’m also reading good things about Troy Calhoun, but i haven’t seen any Air Force games so it’s hard to have an opinion on him. Thoughts?
