Demetress Bell, Vanquished Eagle
Posted: February 6th, 2013 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 71 Comments »The Demetress Bell era came to an end today. I’m fighting back tears as I flash back to all the great memories. There was the time that Bell signed his contract. There was the time he tripped the blitzing defender. And then there was his release. Amazing memories. Truly a special player.
Courtesy of Jason at BGN, here is Bell’s singular moment of greatness.
Bell was an awful player for the Eagles, but the signing was the right move at the time. Bell had the ability and experience to come in and be the LT in 2012. What none of us counted on is how s-l-o-w-l-y he would adapt to Howard Mudd’s blocking system or how poorly he would handle Mudd’s coaching style. Bell and Mudd went together like brownies and tartar sauce.
I’m glad the Eagles didn’t delay on this move. Bell might be a good fit for some team, but he definitely needs a change of scenery.

What’s the word at DC? The Niners blocked Ed Donatell from interviewing for DC jobs. Apparently Jim Harbaugh is the biggest prick in the NFL. I fully get blocking Ed last year. The team had just spent one season together. You need to have some continuity. I think blocking the guy 2 years in a row is going too far. Jim Harbaugh is a more prolific blocker than Demetress Bell.
The block came in regard to a request from the Saints. Still no word on if the Eagles had any interest.
Today is national signing day. Still no word on if the Eagles are interested in a college coach. More and more it seems that way, but no news.
The Saints are reportedly close to hiring Rob Ryan as their DC. Last I heard, Rob was scheduled to interview there on Friday. There are multiple reports that Todd Grantham will interview with the Saints on Thursday. As Jay Glazer explained on Twitter, it is up to Grantham to knock it out of the park and steal the job from Ryan.

Speaking of Rob Ryan…funny thing happened last night. I’m sitting there doing some football writing/research when a text comes over from Jimmy Bama.
“I’ve been thinking about your Rob Ryan comments lately (best crappy car in the lot). What do you know, Lawlor?”
I replied that I know nothing, just thought it was funny that perspective had lessened my anti-Rob Ryan stance.
Jimmy then hit back, “Better be nothing, Lawlor.”
Boy does he hate Rob Ryan. So naturally I called today and told him Rob had the job. The horror in Jimmy’s voice was pretty evident. I quickly let him know it was a joke. No telling what dire thing Jimmy might have said or done.

The Eagles signed LB/DE Chris McCoy today. McCoy, 6-3, 261, played in the CFL the last 2 years after being drafted by the Dolphins in 2010. Here is the PE.com write-up on the move.
This isn’t a huge deal. McCoy had 3 sacks last year in the CFL before hurting his knee. He’s not some impact player. McCoy projects as a 3-4 OLB. We’ll need bodies to help with depth. He’s got the frame you want and has some pass rush ability.
McCoy played at Middle Tennessee State and was 6th in the nation in TFLs as a Senior. He had 20.5 TFLs (7 sacks) and ran a fumble back 68 yards for a TD.
Here are some highlights for those who haven’t seen them yet:

For PE.com, I wrote about Chip Kelly’s challenge of fixing the Eagles.
I didn’t get into specific players. I wanted to talk about the basics. What mindset will Chip have, in terms of building the team to win now vs thinking long term?
I also touched on expectations for 2013. I do not think we’ll challenge for a Super Bowl, but I do think there is enough talent for the Eagles to be a winning team and to look much better than the trainwreck of 2012. I really do think the coaching change is going to make a big difference. This isn’t to say Andy’s dumb or was a bad coach. It was just time for a change. That happened and I think we’ll see immediate benefits.
One really fascinating idea involves the upcoming draft. No matter what you think of the 2013 draft overall, it does not stack up to the top of the 2014 draft. DE Jadeveon Clowney is a freak. WRs Marqise Lee and Sammy Watkins look special. QBs Teddy Bridgewater, AJ McCarron, and Tajh Boyd could all be high picks. OT Jake Matthews will be highly regarded.
It would show a lot of foresight to trade back this year and acquire an extra 1st rounder for next year. That might give you the ammunition to move up high and land an elite player.
There would be risk in acquiring resources for the future instead of focusing on the present, but that might be a brilliant move.
