Surprise in the Cards?

SI.com writer Jim Trotter said yesterday on Twitter that the player the Eagles had asked the Cards for in a Kolb trade would “surprise you”.  I don’t know what to make of this story.

Trotter used to cover the Chargers.  I don’t know how many NFC sources he has.  I don’t know how tuned into the Cards or Eagles he is.  That makes me question whether the name he’s heard is from a legit source.  Now, if the source is legit we have to then question what constitutes a “surprise”.

Trotter may not understand that Eagles fans are just what that word means…fanatics.  We’ve all studied the Cardinals roster quite a bit and thought about trade targets.  If the player is RB Beanie Wells…that wouldn’t be all that big of a surprise.  Same for Darnell Dockett.  Or Adrian Wilson.  I know there are mitigating factors with these players (age, salary, etc.), but they are very talented and fit potential roster weak spots or holes on the Eagles.  Adam Caplan already mentioned the name of LB Daryl Washington and we covered that.  DRC has been covered to death.

Now, it is possible the Eagles threw out the name of a mid-level player or unproven young guy that would be tied to a high draft pick as well.  I’m not going through a ton of names to just randomly speculate.

The one x-factor in all of this is that the Cards are involved.  They are a strange organization at times.  Maybe they are floating a rumor for some odd reason.  You never know what is going on with them.  A couple of years back the Eagles made a strong push for Anquan Boldin.  The deal never really got off the ground because Arizona was just negotiating for appearance.  They needed Boldin to think they were shopping him when all they really wanted to do was buy time so that he, Larry Fitzgerald, and Kurt Warner could have a final season together.

Warner retired in late January of 2010.  Boldin was shipped off to Baltimore in the first few days of the offseason and netted only a 3rd and 4th round pick.  The Cards rolled the dice and came up snake eyes.  They no longer had a stud QB, Boldin, or good compensation.  Any time they are involved in a deal I’m curious as to what will happen vs what is being reported.

* * * * *

Time for another NFC West rumor.  A Seattle radio host named Dave Mahler posted something on Twitter on Friday that would make Eagles fans happy.

Heard from a source Seahawks have offered Eagles 1st and 3rd for Kolb

I don’t know anything about Mahler.

I do know that Seattle tried to deal for both Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb last year.  They made serious offers for both players.  If McNabb had been open to going out there, he might have very well ended up in Seattle.  Instead he was given a choice of teams and his preference was the Skins.  Oops.  Be careful what you ask for.

Seattle has Charlie Whitehurst, but at this point he looks like more of a backup than someone you build a team around.  I think the Seahawks would be wise to go after Kolb.  That would block him from Arizona and might just make Seattle the favorites to win the NFC West, hopefully this time with a winning record.  Or at least .500.

I don’t really care where Kolb goes.  I do like the thought of having multiple bidders driving up the price.  We had great leverage prior to the draft, but the lockout killed that.  Now several teams have their QB in place.  That limits the suitors for Kolb.  As long as we have two teams bidding, we’re likely to get a good deal.

Interesting post about Kolb. I’m trying to guess who they would ask for in compensation who would REALLY surprise me. No one would really be a surprise, except nose tackle. Or wideout. Or Derek Anderson (ha!) could be a QB

Unless it’s DRC, Dockett or Fitzgerald I want nothing to do with the rest of that roster.

I suppose Derek could be a throw-in type player, if the Cards are planning on releasing him anyway.

The Kolb stuff is going to be very interesting. With the bounty that Cleveland netted through the Julio Jones trade, I don’t know why they aren’t getting involved. Seems like Kolb would be a perfect fit there, with or without Colt McCoy.

A 1st and 3rd from Seattle would be pretty hard to turn down, or for Arizona to beat. Maybe all this “Kolb to AZ” conjecture is for nothing.

It is a shame the Cards don’t have Charles Scott any more. THAT would have been a name that would have surprised us.

I’ve got the perfect package of players if we trade with Seattle. How about Kolb for:

    Chris Clemons, DE
    Stacy Andrews, G
    Mike Gibson, G
    Matt McCoy, LB

    4-for-1? Count me in!

i would take clemons back. i think he would fit perfectly in the new system and tapp not so much. i will never get that trade. i get player for player but why did we give up a 4th rounder? maybe cuz clemons was getting too much $$, thats the only thing that makes sense.

they can keep the adrews sister.

i just wacthed a game form last year and i really think graham will be a stud if he can get over the injury. he was so good with his hands for a rookie. i have no clue why fans r down on him.

and whoever was asking of how u can watch eagles games from last year. nfl.com had something last year where you can pick any gmaes and watch on ur comp. i think it was called nfl replay, but it was only avaialbe for a few months during the summer

it seems like we must have a relationship with seattle somehow. seattle or arizona could know the other one wants kolb and wants to drive the price up on the other.

i will def take clemons back. i think he fits perfect in the new system. i still dont get why we had to throw a 4th round pick in on that deal. the only thing that makes sense was clemons was being overpaid. they can keep the andrews sister

What about Levi Brown/draft pick. That would be a surprise and we could use a right tackle.

I’m stuck on this, but in your previous post Tommy, you refer to Nnamdi as a luxury “item”.

How can a team with 0 Lombardi’s and a giant hole at CB, call the 2nd best one in the game a luxury item? It’s our biggest hole on the team.

I mean I would understand if we were the NFL’s best team, the Green Bay Packers, coming off hoisting the Lombardi, and having a hole at CB. We could then say, we did it without the CB, so it’s a luxury. But the Eagles didn’t win, they didn’t show they could get it done with a medicore or bad player. Just because they upgrade doesn’t mean they fixed the problem.

At this point this team philosophy should be Super Bowl or Bust. But it’s apparent, it’s good or bust.

I’ll caution this is all under the assumption we can fit him under the cap.

As for Kolb, anyone else feel like the NFL’s locked screwed the Eagles a bit more everyday. I mean draft picks? Even a 1st and a 3rd – will just make me think what we could have had this year without a lockout. On the speculation of players from the Cards, Dockett and Wilson are the only ones that sound good to me, and tehy don’t fit the Eagles – typical targets. Wells has been disappointing, DRC is a poor mans Asante in my mind. And while I’ll admitt I’m ignorant of Washington, I’m guessing he’s more the same…in terms of Eagles LB’s.

I would consider Beanie Wells a surprise. He has looked good but not great on the Cardinals. He isn’t a very good receiver, something the Eagles wouldn’t be fond of. I suppose they have been attempting to land a power back recently (Tony Hunt, Charles Scott), but I would be surprised if Wells was the main part of the deal

Would Kolb fetch more offers next year if we held on to him? Not sure what next years QB market would look like. Or hold onto him and trade him in season when someone, preferably a playoff contender, loses their QB to injury.
