Day 3 Targets & Discussion Thread
Posted: April 30th, 2011 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 321 Comments »Simply put, I want 2 LBs and a RB today.
I’d like a DT and RS, but I’m more flexible on those spots.
Eagles have:
4th – 104
4th – 120
5th – 149
5th – 153
6th – 191
7th – 228
7th – 236
7th – 239
I’m open to trading pick 104 if we can get a good return on it. Some teams are in love with a player on the board and will act aggressively to go get him. There is no one player the Eagles “must” have.
Who are some guys I’m hoping to land:
RB Taiwan Jones
RB Kendall Hunter
RB Delone Carter
LB Ross Homan
LB Quan Sturdivant
LB Casey Matthews
LB Lawrence Wilson
LB Brian Rolle
LB Doug Hogue
DT Ollie Ogbu
DT Cedric Thornton
DT Lawrence Guy
DE/LB Chris Carter
WR/RS Jeremy Kerley
WR/RS Dwayne Harris
WR/RS Cecil Shorts
WR/RS Ronald Johnson
OC Brandon Fusco
OG Daniel Kilgore
OG Clint Boling
OL Jason Pinkston
Fantasy Mock for Day 3
4 – RB Taiwan Jones
4 – LB Ross Homan
5 – LB Brian Rolle
5 – C Brandon Fusco
6 – DT Ollie Ogbu
7 – LB Malcolm Smith
7 – OG Daniel Kilgore
7 – RB Allen Bradford
I never got to ask this up to the draft, but what do you think about Derrick Locke?
Good morning from sunny Los Angeles, my fellow football nerds! My wife was about to roll her eyes when the alarm went off this morning and then I reminded her about the royal wedding…
Can Taiwan Jones last till the Eagles pick???????
Also, Tommy… no love for Sam Acho? Or does Phillip Hunt allow us to look elsewhere here?
Baloophi – loved your comment yesterday about how to use our new 6th rd pick!
Sam Acho isn’t a significant upgrade on Sapp, Tapp, Teo, etc. I like him a lot and am surprised he slid this far.
If we add a DE, needs to be a veteran or developmental guy. I listed Carter because he could be a LB and situational rusher if we wanted that.
RE: Derrick Locke
Good player. Might fit us well. Durability issues, but has big play ability. good athlete. I won’t complain if we take him in the 5th or 6th.
@ Arby
Thanks! And your screen-name makes me drool for Horsey Sauce… but that happens 24/7 so it’s not exactly a controlled experiment.
Good morning from not so sunny saskatoon, saskatchewan, canada…..yes it is a real place lol
Back at work…..if you could call it that!
There goes Searcy! He was one of your favorites, right, Tommy?
Also, I’m starting to smell a trade-down… lot of targets still out there…
Glad to see Boling go. Hate that he’s a Bengal.
Just finished an Arby’s meal. I had the roast beef.
Searcy was a darn good player. Surprised me with how athletic he was.
We can get Taiwan – Cards already took RB
@ Adam S.
Saskatoon! I love it!
I work with a self-proclaimed hoser who always talks about Medicine Hat… which looks like it’s a scant 200 miles (250 km?) from Saskatoon. Are you closer to Winnipeg or Edmonton?
In later rounds, I care a little less about positions and more about quality players. Obviously RB/LB are needs, but I’m fine with BPA.
Acho gone.
Get Taiwan Jones. Or trade. Or LB.
Arby goes to Roy Rodgers…..
Does that still even exist?
Trade to Bucs.
Trade! Good choice…
AWESOME trade by Howie
Picked up #116 and the Bucs 2012 4th…
So I was watching the re-cap on NFL N of day 2. They were discussing Andy Dalton and showed the footage of him and his gf.
While they were talking about it someone in the background made a comment and they all laughed some.
I like the guys showing a human side and discussing the eye candy. 🙂
and we just get a 4th next year?????where’s the value?
@ Baloophi
Ya Medicine Hat isn’t far from here at all. I’m closer to edmonton (5.5 hr) than winnepeg (8 hr).
What does he have to talk about Med Hat?!?! This isnt the most exciting place lol
We keep a 2011 4th + 2012 4th. More ammo for next year if we need it.
oh, my bad.
@arby And a 4th this year, so two 4th for one
Hah, never mind
Good deal by Howie. 4th rounder next year for only moving down 12 spots. Like it.
We’ll still have good targets on the board.
@ Adam S.
Medicine Hat is just a go-to place when he’s listing crazy Canadian towns… like Red Deer, Regina, and of course Flin Flon.
http://www.cityofflinflon.com/
But he’s from Guelph…
When I was an east-coaster I remember you could only find Roy Rodgers on Turnpike/Parkway rest stops… still the case?
Also, had a craving for Friendly’s the other day and was sad to discover the closest one was in Ohio. And if you think I can construct my own Mr. Conehead you are sadly mistaken…
Is everyone “Sharing their Mood” on the Bummed to Excited meter on the nfl site? And does using it do anything to improve one’s mood?
@ baloophi
No Moose Jaw? Swift Current? lol can you tell we have a large contigent of indians in this province?
Really want Quan or Taiwan here.
ps love the trade, good job Howie. Hope he can stoke pile a couple more picks for next year. We are so young already that we don’t need a ton of rookies again this year. PS has some open spots though I’m sure
*stock
I will be surprised if Taiwan Jones is still there… couple of RB needy teams coming up.
It is very interesting that there are two people here from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Is anyone else concerned about Taiwan Jones’ fumbling problems?
@ Adam S.
Moose Jaw! That’s another one he throws out there!
And I’ll be sure to put Onion Lake and Blubber Bay at the top of my vacation list…
@ Jordan R.
I take it you’re from saskatoon as well? but yes that is kinda crazy. btw I already hold title of Saskatoon’s biggest Eagles fan…….just so you are aware.
The Cowboys select deceased character actor David Arkin. Here are his stats:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0035069/
Love the Gates pick to Miami. They needed speed across Brandon Marshall. Bess is solid inside. They have their RB now. If only Henne wasn’t bad.
What’s with all the Canadians?
New Brunswicker here.
Danny Watkins brought us all out of the woodwork!
@ baloophi
haha nice work on the imdb link!
Ya Onion Lake is a beauty for a vacation……..uuuhhhh damn I cant even think of a suitable joke for it because its so bad haha
Taiwan Jones may not be on Eagles board. He’s fallen for some reason. Brains? Character?
Eagles should only take him if he can handle our offense. If not, go get D Carter or K Hunter.
Eagles fan from Montreal!
—
Hunter got an 8 on the wonderlic, is he smart enough for our offense?
@Tommy
Is that what you are surmising or hearing?
re: T. Jones
@ amoore42
Too be fair I’ve been around eagles blitz for quite some time. Once it shut down I was force to roam the internet in search of a new home. No suitable place could be found. BGN was welcoming and accomadating but didn’t feel like ‘home’. Only 2 days ago I caught wind that Eagles blitz and been ressurected in the form of Iggles Blitz……I feel whole once again.
Time for Oakland to do something stupid…
I’ve always thought Hunter could be a target because of his willingness to block – not my favorite “runner” – but also good at outlet passes.
@ Adam S
Im assuming you’re Steve’s brother Adam? I think you graduated high school with my brother Geoff Ramler. So there are more people from the north end of saskatoon here than starting corners on our roster.
I would rather have D Carter or K Hunter over Taiwan Jones, but I really hope we get Brian Rolle at some point. He is my favorite player in the draft this year, just as Kurt Coleman was last year.
No inside scoop on Jones. Just thinking something must be wrong for him to slide this far. Has 2nd/3rd round ability.
I smell another trade down… or else the dog REALLY needs to go outside.
LOVE the booing for Philly at the draft!
How about HOgue or Rolle here?
Casey Mathews per spads
LB Casey Matthews is the pick.
I’m thinking Casey Matthews
Finally, good value.
Matthews is a solid pick. Castillo’s kind of guy. Great motor. Best cover LB in the draft. Only so-so athlete, but good football player.
He could be a great Nickle backer. Maybe a LB who can cover TEs?
Spadaro enjoys announcing the pick before its on TV WAY too much. I cant deal with him anymore. Did they have Merrill on with him analyzing picks? They really need to bring in someone with some actual knowledge.
cant argue with the Matthews pick in the 4th.
pick 120 coming up
I really liked Jalil Brown.
Mad we missed out on Hunter, but Mathews and Jones plus a future 4th will be a great 4th round.
I’m thinking this next pick is Made in Taiwan…
@ Jordan
You know what I think we’ve actually gone over this before over at eagles blitz, possibly about this same time last year. Ya Geoff was a year, maybe 2 older than me. Small world….who else from the NS is on this site? out of curiousity
Good pick of Casey Matthews….I can handle that.
listening to Jarrett’s presser. cant decide who is dumber…him or the reporters asking questions
Burton and House still available.
Like the Matthews pick in general, but the folks at CBS/ Draft Scout say:
“Slightly stiff in the hips, doesn’t have great change of direction ability and could struggle in man coverage vs. NFL tight ends and backs”
which I trust less than Tommy &co, seriously, but just sayin’, also:
“Rarely beat the block once picked up on the blitz. “
Kicker???
and Tate explodes into flames…
A kicker? Interesting. I actually like the balls here.
and its a kicker
Oof.
That felt like getting place-kicked in the balls.
oh
my
god
WTFFFFF
A Punter??? booooooooo lol
Are you kidding me they took a kicker in the 4th
Apparently Akers just tweeted: “It’s been fun, Philly!”
Alex Henery from Nebraska was a great college kicker. I saw him make some incredible kicks. He has a huge leg and was clutch. I’m okay with this.
So glad I’m not in TATE right now.
Just when they were starting to feel better about themselves with the Casey Matthews pick.
Goodbye Akers, its been a good ride
haha I can’t help but laugh at this. I’m blown away NFLN actually had footage to put up of him.
Sad to see Akers leave 🙁
He’s also a one-cut, change-of-pace runner who can catch and block so it’s not a total waste.
Speaking of waste, have to take the pup out… keep working those phones, boys! I expect a trade back into the end of the round for an equipment manager.
If the kid can kick AND punt, then we just drafted ourselves an extra gameday active roster spot.
Let’s put it this way. When my dad, who isn’t even an Eagles fan, hears the name and says, “Wow, this kid is great”; I kind of have to trust that the Eagles made a good pick.
The NFLN panel reaction was priceless….. I hope AR knows what he’s doing.
@ Eric
who was he referring to? Matthews or Henery?
from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC0w8t0HSl8
57 yarder
Henery.
Taiwon Jones = Rashad Jennings
Good point mcud. Tommy do you know if Henrey can punt?
Jones a Raider. Smart pick for them.
Maybe we trade for Michael Bush?
I really hate to lose Jones, but if the kid can punt AND kick getting him potentially opens up an extra roster spot.
I have no problem with using a pick on a kicker after you’ve stockpiled picks, something the Patriots do, and getting the best guy in the draft.
But Banner and the boys just love the break the news to you on draft day when you ask for an extra helping of supper.. first Mikell and now Akers. Reminds me of when TO and Westbrook were asking for more porridge and they used a 2nd on Reggie Brown and a 3rd on Ryan Moats, never having a spot for Moats when BWest was satiated. Then they went and drafted Herremans in the 4th and Trent Cole in the 5th after McCoy in the 2nd, a typical Eagles draft.
Maclin tweeted that he’s seen Henery kick FG’s on kickoffs. When a WR seems pumped about a K….I think I will be alright with it.
& Henery’s actually NOT a reach based on what I’m reading
Mayock just described Henery more.
I don’t get the outcry.
We BEAT the Super Bowl Champions if Akers doesn’t choke.
Henery jerseys already sold out in the Eagles’ shop.
Amen Kevin.
Several guys in college do both Punts and KOs. Doesn’t mean they will do it in the NFL. The problem is that colleges can’t find guys to do each job so often the best P also happens to be the PK. And vice versa.
I would think Henery is just here as a PK.
Given the high hoser participation in here should we talk about the Roughriders’ draft for a few minutes?
Mike Mayock just got text from NFL STs coach. Guy had good things to say about Henery. Very good from 40-49. Should be ok on KOs with new rules.
I can’t believe Burton and House are still there. Trade up!!!
Tommy,
What’s your instinct for round 5?
Pretty great that our last two picks are the only picks trending on twitter worldwide. Akers is too
Tommy, do you every question why you do some much work for the draft when your own team rewards you with a draft like this? It has to be like a kick in the balls.
@Baloophi
fuck the CFL………that is all.
Round 5 I want another LB. I’d also like RB, DT, or RS. If Brandon Fusco is still on the board, I’m open to him.
Just get me another LB (assuming quality targets are still available).
@ John C…
I study the draft so that I’ll know all these guys. That way when team makes surprise pick, I’m able to understand.
Your Buckeye LB’s are still on the board, right?
@john c
I think the Eagles are being very specific with the players they’re targeting. They just aren’t, for the most part, the players or the place we think they should be targeting. Have to trust the FO.
Sorry ..I am “Name”
Dion Lewis, Jacquizz Rodgers, Derrick Locke, and Noel Devine are players at RB that I would like the Eagles to really consider before the end of this draft.
My Buckeye LBs are still here.
Pilares just went to BUF. Good player. Under the radar.
Butch Davis on NFLN sounds like he’s got marbles in his mouth… and also like he’s still trying to catch those darn Hazard boys.
Would the Eagles going to consider another medical case with Marcus Cannon in Rd 5?
Pilares is also the latest workout fad.
sentence construction alert!
Tommy,
What do you think about Ziemba?
Pilares is a good player. Watched Utah St/Hawaii last night and the guy really jumped out at me. Also did that when I watched Hawaii earlier.
someone tell McElroy’s girl she’s not Kim K…
Ziemba is big, stiff. Not a good thing. Liked him less the more I watched him.
RE: M Cannon
Not a Mudd type of OL. Can’t see him as target.
@ ToastJ…
I think we need to see her in a bikini just to make sure.
Seriously somebody needs to put together a compilation of all the WAG’s of the 2011 draft…….I nominate not me. maybe some sucker on Reddit will bite on it.
I have to say, this is the most uninspiring draft under AR I’ve ever seen. I just don’t see any guys I can point to who will be impact players on offense or defense other than Watkins.
There are no more corners I like.
Richard Sherman?
So, are NE getting praised to the sky for taking Cannon in round 5?
So who do you like here Tommy? Ross Homan, Cedric Thorton at 149, 153?
Ross Homan would be a real good target here.
@ Adam S
I saw Dan Eichloff do kick off field goals back in 1992 for the Jayhawks, he was also 2nd team all-American. He and Dana Stubblefield were the stars of that team. He did not make it in the NFL despite his leg strength and college accuracy.
@ Adam S
ooooops
That was my comment.
Don’t know if I would’ve traded up for Jaquizz… especially when I’ve traded my entire draft away already…
One guy who’s enjoying the weekend so far is Eldra Buckley, and Harrison for that matter..
Strangely, Reno Mahe also enjoying the weekend.
We’re up! Fusco or one of the Ohio State LBers please…
Yesss. Dion Lewis. He and Locke were my favorite two RB’s remaining.
Does he return?
Dion Lewis?
got the complementary RB there.
Dion Lewis is an interesting pick. Talented, instinctive runner. My only concern is how he’ll work in an offense where he’s not fed the ball.
Cleveland is having a good draft.
@ T_S_O_P Ya I was just passing along what I read, I have no opinioon on Henery.
dion lewis can’t escaped McCoy’s shadow lol
Eagles take another Pitt Panther in a couple picks? DE Greg Romeus could be worth a flyer in the 5th.
Does Lewis return kicks or anything?
I don’t mind Dion Lewis, but does not seem like a replacement to Buckley on ST’s
I’ll be posting some thoughts on Lewis after we make the other 5th round pick.
Pick traded to the Jets.
Another trade
Traded again.
dropped back 8
wonder if Sturdivant could be the pick here
Did anybody catch what we traded for? Just moving back to the Jets’ 5th round pick? A 2012 4th? Something else?
Still looking for O’Dowd or Fusco before it’s all said and done.
ROFL…Merrill is hilarious…novelty items on sale…he asks if the novelty item is a play book full of running plays.
Looks like we picked up an extra 6th
exchanged that 5th with the Jets and gave them a 7th for their sixth…
Our 5th and 7th for their 5th and 6th
So they gave up their 7th and picked up another 6th. Possible ammo to trade back in the end of the 5th for the guy you want that’s still there?
Richard Sherman off the board!
@ Arby
I can’t stress this enough: your screen-name is inducing a roast beef craving.
Any chance you can change it to “salad”?
I would love for Andy to get his hands on Tyrod Taylor
Skins select Niles Paul. Any intel, Tommy?
Looks like they’ve had an uncharacteristically intelligent draft so far…
I might be able to do “steak salad” but I draw the line there.
@ Zach
Let’s try to keep this discussion non-sexual…
Oh, you mean draft Tyrod Taylor. Nevermind.
@ Baloophi
Well played sir
So what LBs are left? Get another LB and Fusco and the later rounds are looking good.
@ Steak Salad
Thank you.
Best Sam backer available still? Take a flyer on Herzlich?
gentlemen here you go as a quick break from mike mayock.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/684664-nfl-draft-2011-andy-daltons-hot-fiancee-jordan-jones#
We’re obviously in good shape as far as WR goes, but somebody good is going to shake out of the Rams’ camp, right?
Brandon Gibson
Danny Amendola
Laurent Robinson
Danario Alexander
Mardy Gilyard
Pettis
Salas
Unless they keep all seven?
$100 says she’s in playboy by the end of the season.
Eagles coming up. 5 names I like:
LB Homan
LB Rolle
DT Ogbu
OC Fusco
DE/LB Carter.
Herzlich is target for late 6th or 7th.
RE: Skins draft
They are making smart picks. Very weird. This is bizarro world. What’s next…Shanny gets on his knees and apologizes to Donny and begs him to stay?
Enderle… good pick.
Can we get a two-for-one special with both Ohio State backers?
@ eric
I hope you are right. Hell I hope Hugh is watching the entire draft taking a list and puts together a whole issue of them all.
I think the Skins are experiencing a “law of averages” or “reversion to the mean” phenomenon… not possible for them to whiff on EVERY draft…
Julian Vandervelde?
Who?!
Hmmm… Vandervelde. Don’t know a thing about him.
Eagles go for Iowa G Julian Vandervelde. Like him a lot. Underrated player who really stood out to me when I studied tape. Quality pick.
Crossing my fingers that “Vandervelde” isn’t Dutch for “plodding turnstile”
Can Vandervelde play center?
Julian Vandervelde… not the worst name ever for a Bond villain.
OK, the team is officially not listening to me AT ALL! So I’m taking my ball and going home.
@Baloophi – thanks for keeping an otherwise dreary draft entertaining.
@ baloophi
you’re on fire! lol
Posted notes.
http://igglesblitz.com/philadelphia-eagles-2/eagles-select-rb-dion-lewis-g-julian-vandervelde/
@ Arby
Have a superlative rest of the day!
@ Adam S.
I decided to go Roseman-style with my jokes today and go for quantity over quality… sincere apologies.
Apparently we swapped 193 for 194 with Pats
Patriots just traded 193 to the eagles for 194. Weird
Vandevelde in Dutch is ‘off the field’…
So the trend to draft college tackles and use them inside on the line continues, even with the presence of Mudd.
tommy – Vandervelde was 4 year acedemic all-american… smarts to play center?
Mudd enduring Spadaro over on the main-page…
lol this is hilarious that the Pats and Eagles swapped picks WAY ahead of time and for apparently no reason. Maybe BB owed Reid something for some reason lol
re: Skins draft
+ they’ve traded down three times;
+ took Kerrigan as a 3-4 LB at 16 after trading down even tho they have Orakpo, may have thought Ponder would fall to that spot;
+ took Jarvis Jenkins who can play either 3-4 end or NT ahead of Stephen Paea, thought they took Jenkins over Paea cuz they wanted to give Albert another go-round but Skins fan friend says Albert’s done there;
+ took WR Hankerson who they will need immediately, had problems with drops early in college but go help, 6’2;
+ then took three Cornhuskers in a row:
+ RB Helu who may end up as their starter soon, backup at Nebr. who is smart and quick
+ Gomes who was a LB/SS tweener that tackles and intercepts
+ then Niles Paul WR another Cornhusker
RE: Pats/Eagles…
Pats might be slowly moving back to pick #199 where they picked Brady. If it worked once, right?
Maybe the Pats wanted to save money
absolutely befuddled as to that Pats Eagles trade, since they don’t know who’ll be on the board. Seems like a poker bet
The Eagles and Pats probably wanted their consecutive trade record to stay intact
Please disregard my “Mudd on the main-page” alert… apparently it was from yesterday. I was going to comment on how he must live in the office since he’s wearing the same shirt.
NE-PHL something off-record to do with Greg Lewis’ special teams points .. Jabner Gaffney? Kyle Arrington?
I really can’t believe the Eagles are going to take 10+ rookies to training camp again.
One draft I want to see them target 4 high quality players and quit for the day.
There goes Sturdivant & Fusco. Come on baby, take that chance on Herzlich and bring me some DL prospect
The Skins have two consecutive picks coming up so there’s still a chance they can screw things up a bit.
Just remembered this. Post from Thursday:
All-Tommy Team (my favorite non-1st rounders)
WR Aldrick Robinson – SMU
WR Vincent Brown – SDSU
TE Andre Smith – Virginia Tech
FB Anthony Sherman – UConn
RB Delone Carter – Syracuse
QB Nathan Enderle – Idaho
OT Byron Bell – New Mexico
OG Julian Vandervelde – Iowa
OC Brandon Fusco – Slippery Rock
OG Rodney Hudson – Florida State
OT Jah Reid – UCF
DE Sam Acho – Texas
DT Ollie Ogbu – Penn State
DT Terrell McClain – USF
DE Bruce Miller – UCF
LB Ross Homan – Ohio State
LB Nate Irving – NC State
LB Brian Rolle – Ohio State
S Marcus Gilchrist – Clemson
S Byron Landor – Baylor
CB Shareece Wright – USC
CB Johnny Patrick – Louisville
That shows you that I liked Vandervelde a lot.
Vikings too Fusco. 🙁
@ Sjampen
Sturdivant & Fusco manages my taxes. FYI – go for the hourly rate over retainer.
Tommy – Do you think the birds could have an interest in Reggie Bush. We need a RB with homerun speed, a weapon to replace Chad Hall and a RS. We might not want to pay Bush the amount he wants, but we should have an interest since he’s gone in Nawlins
Mcpherson and Bo Wulf interviewing Dion Lewis on the main-page. No idea if he can block, but he can sure handle softball questions! Ohhhh!
I kid… those guys are trying, though Bo Wulf always makes me think of the Albert Brooks sweat scene in Broadcast news.
I’m curious about Bush. Eagles would love him, but would we use him enough to make it worth the money. I could see some offense desperate team going for him.
These last 4 picks are more important this year since undrafted free agents cant be signed because of the lockout. The Eagles usually do a really good job at turning UDFAs into productive players. Also, remember Jamar Cheaney and Kurt Coleman were 7th rounders.
Still looking for O’Dowd.
Without Reggie Bush, the Saints offense isn’t as scary. He’s such a huge matchup problem.
Redskins take three wide receivers
I don’t think we go for a C anymore. Poor class. Fusco was a good target. I wasn’t a huge fan of O’Dowd. I listed him as target because I thought Eagles might like him.
We’ve got JamJax, McGlynn, and AQ Shipley now. Dallas Reynolds played C at BYU. Vandervelde could be C.
RE: Bush (heh)
The Tweet is kind of troubling, don’t you think? Compare to Mikell tweeting “congrats” to his replacement, etc…
What if the plan was to pair Ingram and Bush or switch to a wishbone or something? Crazy, yes, but you’d like to think your players would give you the benefit of the doubt rather than scribble out a “see ya!” tweet four minutes after a draft pick.
I guess what I’m saying is it seems there won’t be enough balls for Bush.
There is a chance that the Reggie Bush tweet was referencing the New Orleans Hornets getting eliminated by the Lakers. The game ended just as he sent the tweet in question. Just a thought.
Hey… remember when we took a kicker in the 4th round?
That was a good time…
lil Lehigh: Zorn took WRs Devon Thomas and Malcolm Kelly one years so they’re trying to do him one better
@Baloophi You don’t find these late rounds very entertaining do you? With that said, thanks for bringing some more humor in here
Another Appalachian State player goes. Makes me proud, as an alum of ASU.
Tommy – any good prospects from colorado school of mines we should expect to come off the board soon?
Marc Scheichl maybe?
There is a big NT from Col. School of Mines. Best Orediggers prospect ever. Doubt he’s an Eagles target. Better fit for a 3-4.
RB Allen Bradford to Tampa. They had luck last year with big back from Pac-10 that had weird career. Wonder if they can strike gold twice.
Tommy – how you feeling so far half way through day 3, are you liking the eagles moves?
My best Appalachian State story is when a friend’s step-brother invited me up to his lake house and I arrived in the 3rd quarter of the Michigan game. He’s a huge Michigan fan and was listening to the game on radio and rocking back and forth. I don’t think he spoke for the rest of the weekend. Classic!
This isn’t a sexy draft, but these are solid players who fit our needs and systems, aside from Dion Lewis. He is a guy that hasn’t had to play in a system like ours so we don’t know if he fits or not. You sure can’t question his production.
@ Baloophi…
Now that is a classic story.
Get me a LB or Ollie Ogbu.
we took a center
Where are they going to put all these OL? I know they’re porbably losing two, but still.
I just remember being at my camp for the Michigan/App St. game and listening to Penn St. or another game on the radio and they announced the loss.
I was lovin’ it.
Forget what I said about Center I guess.
Jason Kelce is a real athletic player. Real interesting pick. I guess we are letting all the interior guys know that jobs have to be earned.
At this point of the draft you take the best player on your board I guess. OL arent exciting picks, but they are very important.
Rolle on! Let’s Rolle! Rolle baby Rolle!
Mayock said Kelce might become a fullback?
Surprised by the number of interior OL… but that said I’ve never held out much hope for Shipley or Reynolds so I’m not averse to grooming some new projects. Not a sexy draft, but we seem to be picking up solid players at definite positions of need.
Maybe Herremans does make the move to Tackle?
Lol, 4 different eagles writers wrote Kelsey instead of Kelce
BRIAN ROLLE! according to twitter
Awesome to see the Eagles go for LB Brian Rolle. I’ve been talking about that guy for weeks. Great value pick at this point.
Training Camp is going to be WAR among the oline. Some guys are not going to survive.
Tommy, we got your boy Brian Rolle!!
This will be bittersweet if we learn that New England had to swap picks with us as a penalty for cheating in the Super Bowl.
Atlanta takes a kicker in the 5th, wonder if they would have taken the kicker we got if we waited on him?
Finally a LB!
on a whole coming in here Washburn must love his guys, Mudd not so much
Bookmakers:
Over/Under on the number of times Big Red says “heckuva football player” during his press conference after the draft?
I’ll set an early line of 12. 1.5 per player selected today…
Kiper just reported that Rolle hoped he was drafted by the eagles, he feels that he fits our system… love to hear that
Like the lb pair of matthews and rolle, like the draft alot actually
Spadaro and Reese – an unwitting comedy team. Yikes.
Also, Dan Lauria (you know him as the dad from the Wonder Years) just delivered the Packers’ pick dressed up as Vince Lombardi. We’re officially off-the-rails here.
Giants are having a good draft
Strangely, I like the kicker pick and this whole draft class for the Birds seems to make sense. I’d like to pick up a FA Defensive End to mix in and obviously a CB, but I feel good about the O-Line, D-Back, and LB talent overhaul.
wow long, annoyingly frustrating(work, not draft) day…..I already forgot all about Matthews lol
Feeling good about the backers…
Feeling good about the O-line… though I’d like to get a commitment that Mudd will stay to raise these puppies.
A little uneasy about the secondary…
Feeling nervous about the return game. Would like to shelve D-Jax…
@ Aloha…
Are you joining us from the Southern Pacific?
Caplan just described Dion Lewis as a change of pace back… I assume he means “slightly slower”?
This draft is growing on me. Value is up and down, but I do like the players and that’s the most crucial thing at the end of the day.
like taking best guy on the board, as there aren’t any “spots” on the roster being picked at this point.
other than
+ Jarrett
+ not trading up rather than taking guys who can’t make the team, or having to cut guys from last year, not trading up for Prince A if they don’t have a CB trade in their hat
this is a good draft pick for pick
is name above for what iw
@ Tommy
First off, thank you again for creating this forum and feeding our hungry yet small player personnel minds. Always a treat and you, sir, are an important part of my Eagles’ experience.
Secondly, I echo your thoughts on the players versus value. It’s easy to take pot-shots at the “assumed” value of a player (I’ve been doing it all weekend!), but it won’t matter where they went if we wind up with solid contributors. Except for that kicker. Just kidding. Maybe.
COM-PEN-SI-TOR-IES!! HO HO HO!
Question for the group:
Does the selection of 3 interior lineman suggest that Mudd is happy/curious with the tackle depth we have (Austin Howard, King Dunlap, Fenuki Tupou)? Or is it more of an indictment against our current interior line depth (McGlynn, Reynolds, Shipley)?
I have heard that Howard likes the OTs. I do to. That’s why I scoffed all offseason at the cries for Gabe Carimi. Didn’t make sense.
Peters
Justice
Dunlap
Howard
Those guys all have size, skill, and athletic ability.
Tommy is it fair to say that high character is now a requirement for Howie? Not 1 of the 22 players that he has drafted have any real character concerns.
@Baloophi
You got it. Transplanted from Hatboro to Oahu about a year ago.
@ Aloha
Nice work. I’m not familiar with Hatboro, but I’ll go out on a limb and guess that Oahu is just as nice.
My wife and I spent a few days in Kauai last year… amazing.
No WRs but this was a bad year for WRs after the top 2. I’d say the top 2 have Canton potential but Julio Jones will be blamed for the decline of a franchise.
Interior line was a clear need, and they’re nearing the point where Jean-Gilles and Cole would have to be re-signed, which is looking unlikely.
NFL’s draft tracker has a funny analysis of Kelce:
Pick Analysis: Kelce has the ability to play center but there are questions about being able to protect the quarterback
Round 7 targets?
I’d like a DL, WR, or bigger RB. Someone with return ability would be nice as well.
Mario Fannin? Or is he more UFA territory?
Fannin would be a great fit, already great in pass protection
Mario Fannin is an interesting prospect. Great athlete. Versatile. Marginal production. Could be better pro than college player. I’d be okay with him.
Tommy: Who are your top rated prospects left for the Eagles here?
What do you all make of the fact that we have not taken a DL (so far)?
We have plenty of DL already. We need impact guys or developmental guys.
Bad year for late DEs. Couple good DTs left.
Impact DL will come through trades / FA.
@ nicolajNN
RE: zero DL…
I have to think they’re happy with some of the youth/depth we have in place. Sapp, Te’o, Hunt, Dixon, Laws, Owens…
I also wonder whether Washburn has some FA targets he can cajole into joining the Eagles.
I would’ve liked a DL to challenge and/or eventually replace Bunk/Patterson, however. But can’t get it all!
Targets?
DT Ollie Ogbu
DT Cedric Thornton
DT Lawrence Guy
RB Mario Fannin
CB Josh Gatlin
S DeAndre McDaniel
LB Mark Herzlich
LB Malcolm Smith
WR Stephen Burton
Giants have Greg McElroy. Now we just need Eli to get dinged.
Wow. I thought DeAndre McDaniel was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th round.
RE: McElroy
Didn’t he go to the Jets?
McElroy is a Jet.
RE: D McDaniel
I had him as 4th or so. Must be a character or medical issue. Not my favorite guy, but he’s way better than this.
Lawrence Guy.
Good decision on not going with “Larry.” Then he would be Larry Guy.
Burton would have a chance to make the team, as a KO returner and speedy WR to line up with DJax and Maclin.
One thing to think about in the 7th tho is to draft against need, because you have a better chance of signing UDFAs in your area of need. But it’s kinda pointless if the guy can’t make the team. Right now the Eagles are going to have a hard time signing any UDFA because they have so many young draft picks, the top UDFAs are going to scout out what teams they have a chance to stick on.
Better Larry Guy than Harry Guy.
At this point get players you think can play, simple as that.
thanks re: McElroy, just says New York on the board I look at. Blasted! Darn! Giants are putting together a menacing draft.
@ Ian no. 2
Giants always seem to draft well. But remember, they are cursed when it comes to game play. Coughlin will forever be spiking his headseat on the turf.
I get the feeling there was a larger pool of commenters in the first round
I can’t believe these comp picks take so long. You can’t trade them, and you have been looking at the lists of names for days on end, how long does it take to walk to the podium?
Baloophi – looking forward to the Coughlin – Marvin Austin sitcom, especially if Shan- Fat Albert gets canceled or into reruns
Greg Lloyd.
Akeem Jordan and Omar Gaither might want to keep a few packing boxes around this summer…
Greg Lloyd?!?!?!?! Wow!!!!! He was awesome in Pittsburgh! Did he go back to UConn to finish he degree or something?
UConn LB Greg Lloyd. Tough, physical player. Knee injury hurt him all of 2010. I need to study 2009 tape to get a better feel for him. Inside run stuffer.
@ ATG…
Comp picks normally go quickly. Might be slow this year due to UDFA situation. Or teams are just trying to drive me crazy.
@ Ian no 2
Here’s how we can add a little juice to the sitcom – we set it in Europe in the WFL! That way Tom Coughlin and Marvin Austin (or their surrogates) can share an apartment in Barcelona or something… that way it’s an odd-couple AND a fish out of water show.
If we draft Kevin Greene with this next pick it will confirm for me that we are valuing older, more mature players this year.
I hope Mike Person and Larry Guy hang out.
Had to hit the road all day today. Did we trade a 7th for something? Three linebackers all with NFL family members? Novelty trades? Is Andy just screwing around at this point?
@Baloophi
I thought Mike might have been a person of interest for us, but Larry is just a guy.
@ ATG
Ha!
Not a huge fan of Stanley Havili pick. Not a good lead blocker. Is a gifted receiver, good runner. Not all that big or athletic.
Stanley Havili the final pick.
No defensive lineman at all. Against the grain of Eagles’ past drafts. I guess they’re going to let Washburn go to work with what we have. He worked wonders with lesser talent in Tennessee.
Could Havili be considered a big RB instead of a FB for us?
Havili is a FB, then?
Is that, or a very strange scouting report for DE.
Could Havili be considered a big RB instead of a FB for us?
So we picked up a 4 and a 6 next year?
why have we abandoned the concept of a lead blocker in our offense?
@ mc_bob
Could be because we’ve abandoned the concept of running the ball.
@mc_bob
Why do you say that? We started last year with a fantastic fullback, and replaced him with a pretty good one. I imagine this guy is mostly for reps, competition, and maybe PS material.
NFLN just showed a graphic where Ap State got more players drafted than Univ of Mich…
Tommy must be spanking it to that
@ ToastJ…
That was awesome.
Havili could be a big RB. Andy called him a FB so he’s primarily here to challenge Owen Schmitt.
There is stuff to like about Havili, but he’s not a consistently good lead blocker. Then again, neither is Schmitt.
Okay… fun draft everyone!
Tommy – thanks again! I look forward to your post-game once you’ve had a chance to digest.
Time’s mine.
thanks for everything again this year, Tommy
now the question is how do i kidnap Goodell and make him change the draft back to the old sat/sun format…
Not much need for a lead blocker in a spread offense.
They certainly addressed positions of need in this draft. It is hard to get excited about the individual players they picked, as many seem to have limited upside.
Not much to love about this draft, but like any other we will have to evaluate it down the line.
