Eagles Podcast & Column
Posted: October 20th, 2011 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 11 Comments »Last night I had the “pleasure” of being a guest on EaglesFanCast. Chuck Stanley is the host of the weekly podcast and does a terrific job of running the show. He does all the technical stuff and keeps the show moving, hopefully in an interesting direction. Last night we discussed the win over the Skins and then the show covered all kinds of ground. Lots of Andy Reid talk. Even went back to his situations with George Hegamin and Bill Johnson from the old days.
Go here for a listen. Should last about 45 minutes.

For my SB Nation Philly column I wrote about the Eagles defense. Is the improved play legit or fool’s gold?
I think I’ve mentioned it before, but from the Moscow Rules (who actually got it from the novel ‘Goldfinger’):
“Once is an accident. Twice is coincidence. Three times is an enemy action.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moscow_Rules
I would change it to: “Three times is a trend.” Looking at the schedule, we should have a pretty good idea about this defense after week 12 (against NE). By then they’ll have faced NE and Dallas at home and the Giants on the road.
Chris Berman has said the accident, trend line for years on NFL shows. Usually it is in a negative context. “Once is an accident. Twice is a trend. 3 times means you’ve got trouble.”
Didn’t know the actual origin. Good stuff.
Tommy,
I have to bring something up that is irking the heck out of me and I guarantee will bite us in the ass at a critical time this season… Shady is perhaps one of the sloppiest carrying featured backs that I have ever watched. While watching Vick carry the ball like a loaf of bread is always horrible, I find the fact that Shady likes to carry the ball like a sprinter carrying a baton very scary. When opponent defenses talk about how our ballcarriers are sloppy with the ball, I think they are largely talking about Shady. Of course they have watched Vick/Maclin do it as well, but Shady carries 20+ times per game and it seems like his ball carrying is becoming more and more sloppy. The kid is a phenom, but he scares the heck out of me. Forget the “three points of contact”, Shady is usually rolling with one. Have you noticed and is it going to take some serious fumbling issues before the coaches tighten it up. If this is not addressed soon, I see a few huge fumbles on the horizon because we have been so lucky thus far.
One thing…watch what he does in traffic. Shady brings the ball into his body.
I agree that his arm swinging out in space scares me, but at least he’s making an effort to cover the ball in traffic. That’s a start.
Tommy – good write up on the athletes and coaches being human beings – we fans want our team to do well that we sometimes forget that they have lives…on the other hand if I see Castillo give another press conference, I may just throw up (his comment from one of the after game pressers – the boys tightened it up and showing the fingers on his both hands come together….jeez)
In the case of Jerome Harrison – what happens to him when he goes back to the Lions – does he get paid his salary for the year (I am assuming the put him on IR)…any chance you can shed some light? I hope these guys have good medical insurance/disability insurance etc and are taken care of…
Wow, didn’t see this posted anywhere: apparently the Eagles tried to trade Steve Smith!? At least according to Schefter’s 10 spot:
“1. Any takers for T.O.? When Denver tried dealing wide receivers Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal and when Philadelphia was open to trading wide receiver Steve Smith, they found few takers.”
Did you hear this, Tommy???
I’ve heard nothing about the Eagles shopping Steve Smith.
Teams did call the Eagles about WRs, DEs, and CBs. Those are spots where the team is deep. Just because the Eagles talked to some teams doesn’t mean they were actively shopping players. Big difference.
Not gonna lie Tommy, this guy either thinks very much like you or regularly rips off your work..

He’s probably the best writer covering the team from the local media and has referenced/credited Tommy several times in his column if I’m not mistaken.
Ditto on the best writer in the local media. Other than Tommy’s stuff, I trust Sheil’s write ups. He isn’t a sensationalist and gives decent analysis. By far the best of the locals, with the exception of Ray Didinger.
Sheil is a good guy. He reads this site and has given me credit plenty of times.
He goes back and watches the games. Most times he and I have the same conclusions, but occasionally we differ.
I regularly read his stuff and think highly of him. No complaints from me at all.
