Game Thread – 2nd Half SF at PHI
Posted: October 2nd, 2011 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 179 Comments »20-3, good guys, at the half.
293-153 in yardage.
My son LB Brian Rolle is making the family proud. Simply put, he looks like he belongs.
Mike Vick is slightly better than Mike Kafka. Vick is a bit erratic, but has made some great plays and looked good overall.
Ronnie Brown is inches away from getting shipped to Siberia. He better have a clean 2nd half.
Jason Babin doesn’t suck. I remember Jeff McLane going on an on about how the Eagles needed to go get Ray Edwards. Uh, no. Babin was our DE target and I think you see why. He and Jim Washburn go together like Megan Fox and bikinis. Okay, that might be a strange point of comparison. How about french fries and ketchup?
Our Red Zone offense is … less than awesome. Unless you’re a fan of the opposing team.
Let’s go finish this game strong.
I expected WAS to dominate the Rams, and I expect the Giants to beat the Cards, but I’m really disappointed in the Lions right now.
Nevermind.
Though it’s not like it matters.
To your point Tommy. Charge that one to Vick’s mouth.
They ran the same play and got the same tripping call?
I liked Harbaugh’s reaction yelling “Tripping?” into his headphone. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen it called twice in a game.
Brian Rolle is clearly an upgrade from Matthews (would have loved for both to be playing).
But if we had Bowman and Sean Lee . . . much better
What if we had Bowman and Rolle?
How is that they look like a totally different defense after the 1st quarter of this game?
They have looked pretty good in the 2nd and 3rd Q of each game. It is the start and end that have been trouble.
Chance to end this game right now.
Clearly, getting D-Jax involved is a big part of the game plan.
The KING . . . athletic as hell.
Is our Oline, specifically the tackles, backpedaling more like they have in past years?
Haven’t noticed that. I’ll watch for it.
The 49ers have blitzed 6-7 on 3rd-and-9 or less almost every time.
WHY aren’t the Eagles ready for that?
On a positive note, Alex Henry is my fantasy kicker…
STs MVP for today…Alex Henery or King Dunlap?
Question for Morton . . .
Was the Eagles’ selection of Alex Henry right on the money . . . or what!!!
I’d like to see him connect on a few more 40+ yard field goals before I celebrate the pick, but you can’t argue he has done a great job with the opportunities he has been given.
I like Megan Fox and bikinis, I can live with that comparison
Does Dunlap nomally normally on the FG defend thing?
I’m not sure. Gotta go back and check that out.
I think I’ve seen him in there a few times before.
I know this isn’t the time/place for this comment, but this is something that has been bugging me for a few months and I keep forgetting to bring it up. I realize that not many players “crosstrain” at another position (cough, dan kleco) BUT…
Tommy, can you explain why King Dunlap hasn’t been tried at DT? With his height and athleticism… our shortage at DE could be helped if he could play some snaps in there and slide Jenkins outside… Plus can you imagine a 6’9″ guy taking away passing lanes? I can.
Leverage is important inside, Dunlap doesn’t have it.
Makes sense. thanks
Do we lead the league in RZ FG’s? And how much are we ahead of the number 2 team? It’s gotta be a wide margin
TOMMY . . .
Off topic but — DID YOU SEE CAM NEWTON BEING THIS GOOD?
No. Shocking. Great job by him and the Panthers.
TD saving tackle by DRC. Thank the lord.
God I hate those elusive QBs that extend plays. We should get us one of those.
shocked to see him outrun hunt… : (
And ruin our timing offense? Dumbest idea I’ve heard today.
What was that, it’s not the 4th Q yet!
Wtf happened on that play? Was that just a hot route on our blitz?
Did it look like Asante didn’t want to tackle him?
Yes
Where’s Vernon Davis?
Maybe Juan’s not the disaster some think.
Though I’d like to see much less zone on Nnamdi’s side.
Is this the disaster you were looking for?
anyone else tired of watching Asante play even softer than usual? his nonsense ever since we signed nnamdi is unbearable
Let’s not go overboard here, he’s always been like that and there has been some plays where he got physical
In terms of tackling, Asante has had one of his strongest years (which I realize is not saying much). I’m not sure he has been beat in coverage all that much either. I’ve seen way more plays made on nnamdi than on asante
Vick and Celek have similar chemistry to Natalie Portman and that guy in the new Star Wars movies.
Hayden Christensen. They should be more like Portman and Mila Kunis
This may be the best ST unit in the Reid era. If only we had a Brian Mitchell.
Am I the only one thinking of weeks 2 & 3?
Here comes the 2nd half defensive collapse again.
This is starting to feel familiar.
Offense underachieving and turning the ball over. Bizarre playcalling. Bad tackling and lots of mental mistakes by players. And the defense breaking down when trying to hold a lead.
Red Zone again, lets see something.
Alright I’ve seen enough – fire Juan.
Juan’s defense letting the niners right back in.
You never should have written that clutch/closer article Tommy! haha
Someone better fucking tell Andy Reid and his coaches that football has 4 quarters. They don’t seem to know this.
Going into the season, we talked about our defense being designed to protect a lead. So far, it seems we are at our worst on d with the lead and at our best when playing from behind. I don’t get it.
One stop just one in the RZ would be nice this half
Jarrad Page needs to learn how to use 2 arms to tackle.
All he does is try to drill people with his shoulder. WRAP UP!
oh goody another late game collapse, I can hardly wait.
It is time for this team to “man up.” In a serious way.
I think I can say with full confidence that this isn’t the team we thought it was.
What’s lost in this whole defensive collapse memes is that the offense has collapsed too in the second half.
I think we’ve got to stop kidding ourselves that this is anything close to a SB contending team. The Off is too inconsistent and relies on busted plays. The D sucks as anything besides rushing the Qb.
At least our rookie K seems to be the real deal…
Those last 4 steps to get to the ball were just a gear other players don’t have.
There isn’t anyone better on this team than Kyle Devan?
We should draft a RT.
Tommy, just out of curiosity, how many plays this week are we going to say if we took them away our defense played well?
And can we get Page off the field!!
#sorryverybittertableforone
But you’re fine with the performance of the offense? I’m not.
No I’m not happy, but for my health’s sake I can only afford to let one side of the ball send me into a rage.
Terrible 3rd Qtr. Very interested to see how the team responds in the 4th.
Missed FG by Henery. Not a good start.
I know SF has good LBs, but we really gave up on the run, even by our standards.
Andy is trying to make a point to remind people that he balances his pass/run philosophy across the whole season.
I think Reid hoped to build a good lead and run in the 4th. Great plan…until the 3rd Q happened.
We’re ahead, let’s go Eagles!!!!
Well if we lose this game, I’m going on record – it destroys the other two in terms of epic collapse. We could kid ourselves with the Giants & Falcons that they have decent talent. But letting a team of Josh Morgan’s and Kendall Hunter’s tear you up, that’s another thing….not to mention the obvious different levels at QB.
Watch some idiot say, “Akers would’ve made that.”
Uh oh, I’m going to seek cover now
Juan is getting alot of criticism but I think Mudd has been just as bad…this Oline stinks plain and simple
Anger. Rising.
As hard as this is to watch, I’m not going to give up hope. The defense still has good players who know what needs to be done… It’s time to step up.
Redemption… thy name is Babin.
…with a quick hand to the face.
That injury to cole looks very very worrying
Yeah, that’s scary stuff. Phillip Hunt better be ready to step up.
Tommy:
In your review, take a look at how much more often during this game — at least it seems — that the Eagles’ D-line lined up much tighter.
Especially when P-Hunt was in.
Will the Eagles run the ball again today?
Or just go All Andy?
C’mon!!!
Unless McCoy’s hurt
The enemy is as much the Clock as the 49ers
Nice to see Avant gettin some YAC and being clutch on 3rd down.
7 Trips into the Red Zone 23 points. 49ers. 2 – 10 points. Everyone has better red zone defense than us. and better red zone offense.
And another miss
Changes are coming…
Like what?
Cole’s hurt, so the pass rush will get worse, matching the rest of the team.
Uh maybe a new DC and Oline coach…and no we don’t want Mudd as the new DC
This is the kind of game that makes me want to pull my hair out, but my bald spot is big enough on its own. Miserable day.
With all the talent and your optimism, We just aren’t that good.
Kinda reminiscent of last week, and the week before, and to some extent the week before..
If we lose this I don’t know what the hell we do.
Worried about the Eagles offense? Just allow them to reach the RZ, and they’ll stop themselves for you.
Worried about the Eagles Defense? Just wait until the 2nd half, and they’ll fall apart.
Why would anyone be worried about the Eagles defense?
Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan Fire Juan

I feel like you’re trying to say something here zac, but I can’t quite figure it out…
I’m pretty confident the whole staff should be thrown out after 3 straight blown 4th quarter leads.
The offense has scored 0 4th quarter points in the last 3 weeks.
I guess it’s safe to say that this offseason can be compared to the big free agent offseasons of the Redskins. barf.
Juan should be escorted from the sidelines as we speak
agreed
Csn I coach this Eagles defnese? can’t do much worse than Juan could I?
Epic collapse. Unbelievable. Mike Vick needs to do that voodoo that he does so well.
Even if he does, you can’t justify keeping Juan.
The whole staff needs to go. Epic failure of a season. Season is over. Don’t sugar coat this bullshit of a team this week tommy Not glass half full. This glass is broken.
.
Well at least we have a reliable kicker…
Both sides missed 2 FG’s. I’d love to say it’s all the kids fault, but coach is to blame in my mind.
How does a coach make a kicker miss 2 straight FGs inside the 40 wide right?
How did Reid choose to let David Akers go? How did Reid manage to let Quentin Mikel go? How about Stewart Bradley? Ask Andy.
Hello 9-1-1. I’d like to report a crime of defensive incompetency at Lincoln Financial Field.
Tommy at what point do you fire your staff if you are Jeff/Joe? Pretty sure that goal of SB or bust, is bust.
This is awful. 3 straight weeks of blown fourth quarter leads. Incredible display of incompetence.
Offense has played awful in the red zone, but out defense has blown two fourth quarter double digit leads, and a 20 point lead with 9 and a half minutes remaining in the third so far
I agree, the D is terrible. But again, with the lineup at LB and S, and a first year D coordinator, I expected it. I didn’t expect it to be THIS bad, but I expected bad.
No excuses for the offense.
Is there anyway we go another week without a coaching change? I can’t fucking take this disgusting bullshit
Other than the one game last year, I can’t really remember a 4th quarter comeback from the Eagles.
Tommy –
What on earth is wrong with the Eagles’ offense.
We’re likely 1-3 and may have lost Jason Peters. F*@k
knowing they’re going to run… can we stop the run?
No.
only fitting, these guys haven’t been securing the ball all game long. well folks, it was nice knowing you.
make sure we keep calling for juan’s job even though almost 50% of the defense is made up of 7th round picks and guys don’t know how to tackle (that of course is juan’s fault).
I think they should fire everyone. I asked Tommy mutliple times if he felt it was smart to go into a seaosn with all this youth. That said – onet hing they could change – is the coaches. Not like they can go out and bring back Quentin or Stewart now.
I hate the TO before the 2-minute. Now they have to defend the pass too.
not that it mattered.
Seriously? Who’s left to blame but the coaches?
You want to blame a rookie kicker? Or the LB’s they continue to shuffle around because they ignored the spot? or the safeties when they let a team leader walk?
Sorry Jaun, but bye-bye. 3 games in a row of blowing big leads…you’re getting out-coached at halftime.Sorry Jaun, but bye-bye. 3 games in a row of blowing big leads…you’re getting out-coached at halftime.
I can only half way agree. Can we not ask the offense to score ANYTHING in the second half?
Our problems can’t be pinned on one person which means changes aren’t going to come quickly.
We have a general lack of talent at both the LB and Safety positions, a rookie Defensive coordinator who is not putting his guys in good spots. An offensive line that is doing pretty well blocking for Vick, but can’t push forward half a yard when they need it. A rookie kicker that just can’t be trusted yet.
I just don’t see how firing Juan makes the team any better. We’re just a mediocre team with some big names.
Go Phillies!!!
There is only one solution to this problem now.
The entire organization must be purged from the top down. Lurie must fire Reid and all of his position coaches. Castillo must go. Howie Roseman definitely must go. The octagenerians running the defensive and offensive lines must go.
Reid’s regime has run his course. This team needs a fresh start with a new, up-and-coming coach.
Sorry, but the solution here is to go back to fundamentals and just out hustle everyone.
It’s funny how we love out hustling people on defense but have to outsmart them on offense.
In Dallas, the Lions have scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and are now leading 34-30. The go-ahead td came because Romo tossed an interception on the 1st play from scrimmage.
I’m speechless right now.
Yeah, pretty dismal showing. Very disappointing.
WOW!!!
How bad will this season be?
The Eagles geared up on defense for passing offenses . . . but they don’t really have many on the schedule.
They geared up for getting big leads and defending them w/ the Wide-9 rush.
But they’ve blown them.
And you can’t blame the kid kicker. And if Reid says anything about the “6 points would have helped,” he’s a jack-ass.
This team reminds me of the 2003 Oakland Raiders. SB to last place.
PS – Danny Watkins . . . go back to Canada.
And take Mudd and Castillo . . . and Reid and Roseman with you.
BLOW UP THE FRONT OFFICE
Silver lining for this game… There are a lot of free items on craigslist in the Philly region. Not sure if any of them are better than the effort by the defense or offense in the red zone over the last 20 games.
Howie Roseman should be first on your list of people to blame.
As the GM he is responsible for the past 2 drafts, and for the free agent signings. He is the reason that they passed on Sean Lee AND Navarro Bowman in the draft. He, and Andy Reid, is the reason the Eagles have garbage at the LB position
There’s a lot worth saying right now but your rant about Lee & Bowman is old news. With all due respect…
This. Though the reasons go much deeper than guys he could have drafted. Worry about the decisions he MADE. They’re bad enough.
3 conference losses. This is it. Can we finally call it quits with phat Andy? Your philsophies and personnel decisions aren’t working…not well enough. aren’t working…not well enough.
The 49ers can’t believe their good fortune. They just beat the dream team! Woo Hoo!
Should Jeffrey Lurie deliver the pink slip, or 500,000 fans outside the doors of Novacare?
I’m not entirely sure, but I think it was mcud who made reference to how this offseason was so similar to that of 2005 and how he hoped the season didn’t end the same way……….uh-oh. Cole and Peters are hurt today, hopefully not too seriously. The defense can’t stop anybody. The offense can’t score in the redzone. There are some major things we need to fix.
Yeah, that was me. I was saying that the 2005 team was the one I felt was the most talented, and had the most excitement about. I’ve always felt like this was going to be an 8-8 team, but I know a lot of fans felt very, very confident about this roster. So in that way, its the same.
It was hard not to get excited when the big names poured in. The thought of Vince Young and Ronnie Brown as backups should be exciting. But with that, we (I mean some of us) pretended that the huge amount of inexperience would only realize the upside. That was probably naive. We’re a team of big names and inexperience with nothing in between. That’s not going to work…and clearly isn’t working
Pitiful. Absolutely horrible play by the offense and the defense.
“Suck for Luck”. Who’s with me?
Dunno man, the Colts have a 1 game lead on us in that department, we might not be able to catch them.
Only if we can suck for Cowher as well.
And we can wait another 13 years for a championship!
For what its worth, Dallas imploded today as well.
Watched the final couple minutes. Romo blew it, again, with a late game interception that resulted in the winning td. And the C’Girls were outscored 17-0 in the 4th quarter.
sounds like a typical Eagles game in 2011
Eagles FO had their fun on draft day waving bye bye to Akers, so at least David gets some revenge with that last extra point.
You guys get so worked up about the regular season games. What matters is that we had the best offseason ever and a 3-1 preseason.
That’s a good point. We’re 14-2 or 13-3 this season on paper…so that should count for something
Andy Reid has lost complete control of this team. He’s done.
I don’t think Andy has forgotten how to coach. This is crazy though. If Andy were to be fired, he’d have half a dozen teams pursuing him in the offseason. If Juan were fired, would any team call him to be anything other than an O-Line coach? Would any college team want him as their DC? A high school team?
Guy is in over his head. Has been from the start.
That’s part of the problem with getting rid of Andy. Who do you bring in to coach? We have a lot of pieces in place, but we also have several holes to fill. I agree on Castillo.
No, you can’t get rid of Andy. Shouldn’t either. But Andy has to realize that he’s in the business of winning, if he doesn’t right now. His DC is not getting it done.
Absolutely disgusted by this team. 21 answered points to the Niners? Are you kidding me?
I have infinitely more scorn for whatever the hell Ronnie Brown thought he was doing on the goal line than I do Alex Henery.
Just can’t believe we gave up 3 2nd half TDs to Tiny Hands. The Niners are not a “good” team. They aren’t even mediocre.
Gonna be embarrassing when we lose to Kolb / Fitz and Beanie Wells has a 120 yard day in the Linc.
Agree. That little weasel Bo Wulf tried to pin it on the kicker after Andy’s “comments,” but the real culprit is the Wildcat. WTF was that? Assuming Henery doesn’t blow a 20 yard field goal (big assumption), then even choking away 21 points or whatever it was in the 4th wouldn’t have mattered.
Tommy, Bill Parcells, line 1.
TOMMY –
Brian Rolle wasn’t the answer. And, frankly, what exactly did he do that makes him better the Matthews?
We’re reaping the harvest of 2 very bad drafts by Reid and Roseman. And some bad trades.
And just an awful off-season plan.
Did Reid not know that a lock-out was coming . . . and so his team of newbees would have no opportunity to work together until T.C.?
We’re seeing how HUGE a piece Jimmy Johnson was to this team.
And, dare I say, Donovan McNabb wasn’t so bad either — but I’m not asking to have him back (though he’s gotta be laughing when he’s not crying).
*************
And to anyone who thinks this team wouldn’t be better off with Rob Ryan — then you know NOTHING about football.
Reid just completely blew it. Completely.
He put Castillo in a terrible position. Just because your kids ask to smoke dope, you don’t say “oh, you’ve taken antibiotics, sure go ahead.”
And Howard Mudd? I don’t know. Just not enough time . . . especially with a BLOWN 1st ROUND PICK. And draft after draft of bad O-line selections.
But really this comes down to BAD DRAFTING.
Navarro Bowman made some nice plays today. ROSEMAN wanted T’eo Nashim over him.
Sean Lee’s played well. And apparently, whoever the doctors are in Dallas, they’re a lot smarter than in Philadelphia. We got 5 picks and none of them are making much of a difference. Granted, Stew Bradley was expected to come back . . . but he didn’t. Of course, the idea of having depth was not in the plan.
***************
Years ago, Reid talked about building his teams from the inside out — from the O-line out and the D-line out.
The core of this team — from the “inside out” is terrible. Flat out terrible.
****************
Teams must be licking their chops now at playing the Eagles. Pound the ball. Double Babin. And, voila, you’ll win the game.
****************
Tough, tough day for the Rookie Kicker.
But the problems run way too deep to dump on the kid.
The O-Line is not the problem. Everything else? Yup.
I don’t know, DeVan is pretty terrible from what I’ve seen. The other 4 guys seem ok.
DeVan was so bad today that Vick set a career high passing yard record. By something like more than 50 yards.
I approve this post.
TOMMY . . .
So, is it time to panic?
I asked last week if you’d give us your top 5 factors for when panic-time arrived?
How ’bout:
1. 3 straight blown 4th Q lead.
2. 3 straight games w/ no 4th Q offense
3. 3 straight games of playing like the ’98 Eagles in redzone.
4. 3 straight games of the defense being OUT COACHED on BOTH sides of the ball in the 4th quarter.
5. Jim Johnson, God rest his soul, is not coming back
In all seriousness, if we lose the next two (which seems very probable), do you blow things up and go for the #1 pick? I mean, 1-5 even in a crappy conference won’t get it done…
No. You can’t “blow it up”. It’s not the NHL/MLB where you can play prospects. That said, I would definitely not play Graham and I’d consider benching Asante for DRC/Marsh.
Not playing Graham sounds like playing for next year… AKA “blowing it up.” That’s what I was throwing out there. Sounds like we’re on the same page.
You can do certain things. Watkins for DeVan, Marsh for Asante, Jarrett for Page, play more man-coverage, etc. Still, you can’t purpose lose for picks.
The Eagles have the 4th most points allowed, with those two corners and that DL. Andy wanted to wrest control of the D by promoting internally it seems and they’ve got a mess there. Spagnuola is not 0-4 and may need a job soon.
I am rooting for Spags to fail in St. Louis and come back here as well.
Watched the replay of the Ronnie Brown fumble and it appears he might have seen Owen Schmitt and tried to pass him the ball. Anyone else see this?
The three most important things a head coach needs to do to be successful in the NFL is:
– Acquire your franchise QB.
– Hire a great General Manager.
– Hire a great Defensive Coordinator.
Andy had nailed down all three of these points from 1999-2008. No longer.
If you don’t have a competent GM, you draft poorly. In the NFL, you draft well or die.
If you don’t have a competent DC, all the talent in the world on defense doesn’t matter because the DC can’t motivate them and can’t scheme to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
Wow. I sorta completely agree with this post.
Howie is a Banner guy though. Wonder how much Andy really had to do with it.
I’d call Fisher right now. Like, now.
The only guy in the organization that is our MVP is Banner. Everyone else is expendable.
QUESTION:
Did REID insinuate that the kid Henery is to blame?
Not Brown? Not Castillo’s defense?
Not Mohrninweg’s Offense?
Not Roseman’s drafts?
AND NOT REID HIMSELF?
If so, Reid’s really a piece of crap. [I’m not exonerating the kid . . . but, c’mon, 3 blown 4th Q’s. Give me a break]
