The Eagles filled the 8th and final practice squad spot with an OL named Matt Reynolds.  He is a rookie from BYU.  And the younger brother of Dallas Reynolds.

Matt was undrafted and then signed with Carolina.  He was their 3rd string RT this summer.  I thought he definitely was a draftable player and it surprised me he wasn’t picked.  Here is my pre-draft write-up on him.  Matt played LT in college, but I never saw that kind of potential in him.  He looked more like a RT or OG to me.

He isn’t a great athlete, but should be good enough to play in Mudd’s system.  I think the Eagles added another OL because they just aren’t sure what they have with their backup OL.  Dallas Reynolds isn’t proven.  Nate Menkin has only been here a couple of days.  Dennis Kelly is a guy the team is high on, but he’s unproven.  Chase Beeler is new to the team.  The Eagles are going heavy at an area of uncertainty.

Julian Vandervelde was hoping to come back here when Tampa let him go.  The Eagles had some interest, but how much is unclear.  Vandy wasn’t going to clear waivers until tomorrow.  The Eagles decided to grab Reynolds instead.  The advantage with Matt is versatility.  He can play RT, but also should be able to play OG.  Vandy is a G.  He lacks the size for OT.  Tried to play C this summer and struggled mightily.

What’s up with Monte Taylor?  Heck if I know.  Right now he’s on the street and I don’t know if anyone is talking to him.  This flat out shocks me.  Taylor had a terrific summer and looked like an excellent developmental prospect.  I do wonder if the Wide-9 is working against him.  Teams are thinking “that’s the system, not him”.  I sure didn’t think that was the case at all.  I do think Taylor is a great fit for the Wide-9 and he’s not made for every scheme, but he showed serious potential.  Dismissing that is dumb.

We’ll see what happens.  Derek Landri was unemployed for a month last year because teams had their heads up their butts.  He got his chance and played lights out.  I hope Taylor keeps that in mind.  Stay focused and be ready when the phone does ring.

For PE.com I wrote about the Eagles loaded roster.  You can argue about just how good this roster is.  Best of the Reid era?  Best ever?  Overrated?  Underrated?  I do think you have to acknowledge that there is a lot of talent and the Eagles have big time potential this year. The challenge is playing up to that potential.  Didn’t happen last year.

Injury updates:

* Colt Anderson wants to play.  Did practice.  I think holding him back a week might be wise.

* Casey Matthews practiced and says he’s ready to go.

* Jason Babin practiced and says he’s ready to go.

* Michael Vick practiced and says he’s ready to go.

* No Riley Cooper.

Joselio Hanson and Keenan Clayton are now Raiders.  I think new GM Reggie McKenzie wanted them for talent reasons, but also he wanted guys from a good organization in there.  The Raiders have been highly dysfunctional for years.  You need quality role players and veterans to help change a team around.  Hanson, our beloved MmmBop, is a quality veteran and slot corner.  As much as Keenan drove me crazy with his finesse run defense, the guy was good on STs and in some coverage units.  Good luck to them in Oakland.

Did you guys know that Lady Dorenbos was hot?  Wow.  Long snappers get all the chicks.  I’m guessing she got beauty tips from Nick Foles.

If anyone missed it, I was asking for some tech help in a previous post. Good suggestions already, but you never know when someone is an expert and knows the perfect answer.

So your still taking suggestions? I guess my solution of turning up the volume really loud and hand holding a video camera pointing at the TV wasn’t good enough?

I never thought a PBR drinker would be to uppity for a cheap, simple solution.

Who were the last brothers to play for the Eagles?

    At the same time?

I know they didn’t play together, at any point, but we had the Andrews brothers on the team in 2009. Shawn Andrews was IRed that season though (and then eventually released at the end of the year).

And the Detmers, again not together.

Were they ever actually under contract at the same time?

Yes. 1997. Koy was a rookie. Didn’t play. Ty’s final year as an Eagle. He, Hoying, and Peete split time at QB. Wonder if Koy was on the P-squad or we kept 4 QBs.

The Van Burens . . . Steve and Elbert.

(The question was who were the last brothers to PLAY for the Eagles? I don’t consider what either of the Andrews sisters did here together to constitute “playing football.”)

Tommy, I too am incredibly high on Taylor. He seems to be such a natural fit. As much as I really like Tapp, Taylor makes much, much more sense as the team’s 6th DE. Carolina would be a good fit for Tapp. He might even start for them. Packaging Tapp and Cox in a trade for Kuechly would be intriguing.

  12. 12 GermanEagle said at 3:35 AM on September 4th, 2012:

I disagree. With the tremendous (and risky) amount of youth and inexperience we’ve already got on this roster it’s good to have a veteran player like Tapp on the team who also happens to be a vocal leader in the locker room and on the field.

  13. 13 Mac said at 10:14 AM on September 4th, 2012:

While I enjoy speculating about crazy trade deals… You’ve clearly gone of the deep end with this. There is no way that trading a functional pass rusher and a potential dynamic UT for an inside linebacker makes any sense. This is a passing league, and we need our D-line to perform at a very high level to have success this year.

  14. 14 TommyLawlor said at 8:03 PM on September 3rd, 2012:

They never played together, but Correll and Chris Buckhalter were both Eagles. Chris was here in 1995. Correll arrived in 2001.

Saw your “Fandemonium” post on the Eagles website. You are not the first to observe that DeMeco Ryans doesn’t have to be great because he is a leader. But it seems to me that the way to attack the wide 9 is to run up the middle. Last year our linebackers were so culpable in the Eagles being gashed for big yardage up the middle and this current preseason looked at times to be more of the same. Yes, the middle linebacker in a wide 9 doesn’t have to be the greatest athlete but he has to move before the snap and get to the right hole and make the tackle. Has he been doing that? Just how bad can he be before his play offsets his leadership. And how often are we excited about a guy who plays badly in the preseason because he is going to be great once the season starts?

  17. 17 TommyLawlor said at 12:08 AM on September 4th, 2012:

Ryans isn’t struggling. He’s not playing poorly. Expectations were sky high when we got him. He hasn’t looked like a star, but don’t take that too far in the other direction. This isn’t like last year when Casey was really struggling. Far from it.

  18. 18 Anders said at 1:54 AM on September 4th, 2012:

I sadly think people will hate Ryans by the end of the year for not flying all over the field, but instead doing the little things correct. Ryans seems to always know where to be and he seems like the best LB on the team to shed blocks and that alone will help tremedionus

  19. 19 aceandson said at 10:04 AM on September 4th, 2012:

Like it or not, the Eagles philosophy is to trade a few 15 yard runs a game for a dozen or so quarterback hits.

Reid’s offensive philosophy plays into how he approaches defense as well (and this is why Jim Johnson was such a great fit). It’s that “bend but don’t break” mentality that drives us fans nuts. But if lining up the d-line wide leads to a more harried passer, Andy Reid will exchange that and a bag of donuts for getting gashed by a draw on third and long just about every Sunday.

I think it’s fair to disagree agree with the philosophy, but at least it’s a plan that has upside as well as downside and not simply a one-way failure.

  21. 21 TommyLawlor said at 1:08 PM on September 4th, 2012:

Sounds like there may be some maturity issues. The NFL is physical and mental. You must play well. You must practice well. You must work hard. You must learn in the classroom. We know he has talent so I’m guessing the other 2 areas are the problem.
