PS#2 – PHI 14, CAR 6
Posted: August 15th, 2013 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 165 Comments »Good opening half. The offense was terrific, running 35 plays for 257 yards and 2 TDs. The defense still needs a lot of work, but looks worlds better than last week. The Panthers ran 32 plays for 162 yards and just 2 FGs.
Both Foles and Vick looked outstanding. The big difference is Foles throwing a terrible INT in the Red Zone. Shady McCoy…so good. He’s going to be great this year.
The defense is more aggressive and doing a much better job of tackling. Ced Thornton, Mychal Kendricks and Patrick Chung were the guys who really jumped out. Bennie Logan also played well.
Get ready for Matt Barkley in the 3rd Qtr. And Brandon Graham and Vinny Curry.
Good start. Go build on it.
was ready for your trickery this time lawlor

/| how i feel posting on the last half’s thread
I wanted to see the defense improve from last week and I got it. The Panthers are nowhere near as good on offense as the Patriots are, but I’ll take any improvement.
get used to it! Our environment is healthy, our boys are young…Keep improving week to week and we should go into the offseason happy with the direction our defense is headed
Is it true that Carolina was playing their #2 against Vick?
mmmm, I thin Munnerlin is a starter, not sure
If Shady is still out there, we’re storming the castle.
so funny seeing all the assistants doing signs on the sideline
I swear some of them are doing YMCA
Also Tommy, I went down to my hotel lobby to get something before the game and saw none other than the Minnesota Vikings getting ready to leave for their walk-through (I’m in Buffalo). I recognized Greg Jennings and whispered go Eagles to him. lol
attaboy!!! way to represent!
“that was for fumbling, jerk” – Matt Barkley
“What did I do?!” -Damaris Johnson
“that’s for taking the last crossant!” – Matt Barkley
Here comes Baldinger with the Barkley hyperbole…
Did Polk and Johnson give Barkley a wedgie this week or something? Some rookie hazing perhaps?
Tommy why no Bryce brown tonight?
quad injury
Not serious I hope?
Are Quad injury’s ever really serious?
Quad contusion?
Vinny freaking Curry
on a run play no less
it’s been a bend don’t break D night so far.
I’ll take it after the bend and break defense of the past few years.
Did they really bother bending before they broke last year?
No, they just snapped
more like spontaneously Combusted or evaporated into thin air
Pretty sure the defense wet themselves at times too.
Trying to douse the flames of spontaneous combustion?
Exactly.
So what was your reaction when Vick went head first on back to back plays?
lol didn’t want to be the one to mention it an be the Hater… God Forbid I have to deal with the dreaded “Down Vote” lol
2nd dropped int BB, c’mod buddy,
100?
He’s messing with us. Gotta make those plays.
Boykin gimpy after that breakup, looks like he hit the hip bone hard.
i think it was his back, landed flat with a sharp arch on it, due to being yanked by the WR. Hopefully nothing serious
looks like he’s fine
After that KR I’d say so!
thanks for the heads up Tom
Chip’s emphasis and hands on ST practice is showing.
I am so happy right now
Between the turnovers and the penalties, Chip’s head is going to explode.
that one hurt
in hindsight, thinking about the first half, did it seem like Kelce was having trouble with the shotgun snap tonight?
Don’t know. Will rewatch tomorrow. It looked like my man Foles was just dropping good snaps tonight. 🙁
yea that’s what i saw too
Curry looks unblockable
vinnnnnnny!!!
wth is that call?
have never in 29 years of watching football heard the words non-football act in describing a penalty
Also apparently dropping into coverage is a non-football act.
For the 2012 Eagles, that would be fair.
apparently you can drop into coverage, but you can’t do it suddenly. Dumbest rule ever.
I just don’t understand how there can be a penalty that depends on the offenses reaction to something you do. If Hughes did the exact same thing and the WR stayed still, there’d certainly be no penalty, but apparently if the WR false starts then the exact same act which was totally legal in the alternate universe where the WR doesn’t false start, is now a penalty? Really??
The funny thing is that linebackers do that all the time when blitzing or faking the blitz.
Either you should be allowed to move around before the snap on defense or you shouldn’t be allowed to. In the rules the offense clearly needs to stay set before the snap and the defense can move around. Why complicate it with rules that make the refs guess at the defensive players motivation for moving. If he was trying to get the offensive guy to jump then its a penalty on the defense? Dumb
What was that call? Non football act?
Didn’t look like a double play, a jump shot, or icing to me.
Vinny Curry: Preseason Probowler.
in the first half, their first team 3rd down 4 man front was cole-cox-thornton-Barwin
in my estimation we need to be smart and rotate graham and Curry in for that package
on the first line we have the Beef with Cox, Soap and Thorton…we could end up with a nice change of pace 2nd line of Squares,Vinny, and Benny
Curry better carry this over to the regular season…
The amount of improvement in time management, special teams, and our QB play really highlights the areas that AR was slipping in towards the end of his time here. Really puzzling how such a good coach could lose touch so quickly.
If Salas doesn’t make this team it will be a travesty against humanity
I like Salas, I think he should be #4 or 5 at the WR position.
Looks like F. Jones was gettin’ chewed out. Cut him tomorrow AM.
my question, how is tucker so deeper into the dog house than him to not get the nod as #3 for this game?
Agreed. Jones has shown nothing.
You forgot to mention we actually might have good special teams again!!! woohoo!!!!
Dave Fipp has done an amazing job.
Can I double upvote? Triple?
that was…a lot more physical than i thought Jones could be
I like Barkley tonight, he’s thrown a few really nice balls. Still looks like a rookie but looks promising.
Promising, but definitely a rookie. Long way to go.
I want to win this game!!!!
Curry blows up another play. Guy is a preseason monster on the interior.
Curry is a yard into the backfield by the time the other guys on the line start moving.
really impressive first step
strong hands too
Yea I noticed the hands last year, but the lower body explosion and ability to fire off the ball is truly shocking and impressive.
That explosion is insane. It was literally a simultaneous motion of the ball being snapped and Curry jumping in the backfield.
It’s pretty consistent.
I really do not remember seeing that type of explosion from him last year. I always thought he showed strength and power with substandard explosion and quickness…not the case at all after watching him more this year.
you didn’t see how he would explode off the bench at halftime last year?
Wherever washburn is right now, he should be Fired Again!!
I don’t remember seeing this kind of burst though, he flashed at times as a pass rusher but his get off is really really impressive right now.
agreed…was just teasin
pathetic that half the time he wasn’t even dressing for games. Instead we had to endure that douche Babin…ugh
I was given a hard time calling his sacks the softest sacks I had ever seen.
Really explosive on the inside.
The question is, as you stated in your D-line post, is he looking explosive of the end as well? How about against the run? I ask because I can not watch the whole game because I am out of coverage. I’m have to split time with Detroit and Atlanta. Can’t wait for the write up.
On first viewing he looked explosive wherever he was coming from. Literally a yard further up field a moment after the snap compared to the rest of the line.
B. Grizzle!!!
very nice
we call that development lol….Hoping chris McCoy shows up
So, I haven’t been able to see any of this game, but looking at the box score it seems like Foles has had a couple of non-terrible rushes. Do we think that he’d be able to gain those 6-7 yards often enough to keep defenses honest in the read option?
Yes. Has to stop turning the ball over though.
He can keep them honest, I guess…but, let’s be real here, if I was the d coordinator or a defensive player I’d let him try to get that edge every time. He’s painfully slow. 6-7 yards is about the max he’s getting before someone could catch up from the other side of the field.
Those 6-7 yards will win the game every time.
they kept selling out on shady, first one he ran past the LOS and did a designed over hand lateral backwards to the WR with a blocker on the outside
2nd one he faked that play for a nice scamper
3rd one he scampered in for a TD, won the foot race against Luke Kuechly, Cooper had a nice block on the play
Yes. The DEs clearly dont respect his running
I’m watching the Panther’s broadcast of the game. Every time the refs throw a flag they say… “more laundry on the field”. ugh.
did they say that when Shady juked half their D out of their jocks?
hahahah
The LB drops look a lot more refined this game. Haven’t seen any of the LBs looking totally lost in coverage like last game.
I thought that Cole did a very good job in coverage this game.
lack of talent? we look like we should blow this team out by 40 lol
hell yea harbor (edit: never mind)
Great effort.
I have to listen to the game on Internet radio feed. It’s ironic to hear Merrill Reese reading how “Novacare does a great job of getting you back into the game” or something like that when the Novacare Complex is where we lost three players so far with ACLs.
can’t accuse them of not having experience with ACL injuries
practice makes perfect.
Irony can be pretty ironic.
woah, Earl Wolff, attacking that blocker
That was something we won’t see from Allen or Coleman. If Chung and Wolff are the starters, i don’t think physicality will be a problem.
I long for the day that Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman are no longer part of my weekly football fan experience in any way, shape or form.
Kinnation awaits an appearance from THE ONE.
great minds….
Big Play G J
No GJ kinne returning punts!?!?!
wtf was that that Dixon just did there!?
announcer called it a…slide?
…Why is Tucker still behind Jones?
I’m still intrigued by the fact that Vick seems to be running a completely different offense than the other QBs. I don’t even remember seeing him run a play out of the double wide/TE stack that appears to be the basis of Foles’ offense. Vick looks like he’s running a full NFL passing offense with the occasional option wrinkle and Foles looks like he’s running a completely different offense with gimmicks and misdirection, WR screens and read options galore. Not sure what to make of it yet though.
Time for some Momah
Nevermind. that was a weak play.
yep … practice squad bound
3rd and 12. I thought it was a good time to throw it up for him. A dink for 5 yards. Blah
I’d love to see him get some work on fades in the red zone. I went to one training camp. They ran some, but didn’t run many fades. Didn’t see him really attack the high point of the ball like I wanted. But, if he ever figures out how to use his size he’d be unstoppable in the red zone.
matt Tobin, hands a soft as angel hair
Whitley making the most of the opportunities he’s getting
signing in plays with philly icon flash cards!?
The most shocking thing I’ve discovered during the 2nd half of this game is that Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen are still on an NFL roster.
god help the panthers if newton goes down
GJK is the next best thing
honestly, they should sign him, andersen and clausen are garbage, GJ has earned a job in the nfl somewhere. That kid will do and has done anything asked of him, and plays with a lot of guts with his opportunities.
Remember when Clausen was a big topic of discussion during the draft a couple years back? I think the Panthers were on the losing end of that one…
KINNE.
I want to see 1 on 1’s, Clifton Geathers vs. Michael Bamiro. The earth would rattle under the weight of their battle.
GJ probably shoulda kept that one
Is it just me or has Foles not targeted DeSean once in two games?
It does appear that Foles practically ignores DeSean when he’s in there.
or DJax disappears when his guy isn’t getting the snaps.
Can’t make too much out of it when you can spin it either way so easilly
Possible, but I think one of these things is infinitely more likely than the other. I think it’s more likely that Foles does not have the skill set to get a guy like DeSean the ball down the field, more so than the notion that DeSean is purposefully tanking it when Foles is in there because he’d prefer to play with Vick.
I don’t think either of those options is realistic.
I found it odd. I wasn’t trying to draw any conclusions from it.
You don’t think that Foles’ lack of arm strength decreases his ability to utilize DeSean’s deep speed?
To the point of zero targets in 4 drives, no.
He has hit him with some deep bombs in 11 vs. 11’s
Hitting someone on a 30 yard go route in practice is much different than getting it out there 40-50-60 yards down field and fast enough to get it there before the safeties can get over. I was at 2 of the training camp practices…Foles’ deep ball hangs in the air and takes awhile to get there. The majority of his deep throws were under thrown. Not saying Foles’ is garbage and can’t play in the NFL. He looks pretty decent. But, his lack of arm strength definitely takes away some of Desean’s ability to stretch defenses.
GJ Kinne: should he start?
Quit trolling… of course he should.
kneeling like a saint.
I think Jeff Lurie has Sigmund Freud sitting next to him
kneel down… really disappointing.
GJ Kinne doesn’t need to prove anything.
I regress. Preserve the future of mankind.
Love the offense, but we need to get more points out of all those yards. Turnovers again.
Turnovers on 67% of Vick’s drives. /s
he ran 2 drives last week and 3 drives this week. There was 2 turnovers (one was hail mary), so 40%.
/s<—-sarcasm
The /s indicates sarcasm. Even I’m not biased enough to even try to count Polk’s fumble against Vick.
But your math is spot on.
I totally missed that 😛
lol, all good. Let’s try this again.
Foles with TDs on 50% of his drives this preseason. Vick on only 40%. /s
Hey the D didn’t let anybody into the endzone for the first time in…how long?
I don’t think they let anybody in the endzone yesterday.
got me there

McCoy’s sick run
I don’t get a chance to post during games often. Thanks all. It was a lot of fun. My only negative during the 1st half, if I glanced from the tv, I missed a play. Chip is bringing the new NFL world order.
