PHI 26, WAS 7 – 2nd Half
Posted: September 9th, 2013 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 295 Comments »Wow.
I mean…wow. That 1st half is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. And I once saw Jimmy Kempski drunk so I’ve seen some crazy things.
The Eagles ran more than 50 plays, gained 351 yards and scored 26 points. And there were some mistakes. That was far from a perfect half. That’s what is so mind blowing. This wasn’t the perfect storm.
The defense has shocked us all. No points allowed. Alfred Morris has 7 carries for 26 yards. RGIII is rusty and completely uncomfortable. There have been takeaways, TFLs, sacks and even a safety.
STs might be the best unit of them all. Crazy Eyes Fipp has his guys playing brilliantly.
I’ll nit pick later. For now, enjoy the 2nd half.
_
Andy who?
I really want to see the killer instinct we’ve lacked throughout Reid’s tenure. Keep the pedal floored.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
E A G L E S
Yippee!
I shut down the computer so I could focus on screaming, “Run the damn ball, Andy” – er, I mean “GO, CHIP, GO”.
All I want to say right now is 🙂
D_E, over and out.
In
sane
I love this
I’ll be interested to see what happens if they go up by another score. Hopefully Chip switches to a more conventional, huddle-based offense and starts eating clock. This ain’t college – there’s nothing to be gained by running up the score and the roster only has 53 players so you don’t want to put unnecessary strain on them. That goes particularly for Vick, McCoy, and Jackson.
In college he still went no huddle, but just took time to walk up to the LOS. I bet we soon Nick Foles tho
If they go up another score – do you cotton-wool Vick and let Foles have a go?
I think I do. Probably give McCoy the rest of the night off too. He already has 20 carries.
That Toyota commercial is a pretty accurate depiction of Eagles fans this night
Should I take it out? Ehhh… Better not.
That’s what she said.
Teehee.
If SHE’s saying that, I’m scared.
Did Henery have a new leg installed over the offseason?
They adjusted his stride, apparently.
Billy Davis must be Jim Johnson reincarnate. No other explanation. I haven’t been this football happy in a long time.
James Casey?
Was wondering as well… Ah well.
Haven’t seen him at all tonight, but I’m curious if he has done anything away from the ball that would be a positive. Having said that, I didn’t fully buy the “we are saving him for the regular season” logic. He still should have shown us a bit during the preseason in my opinion.
The entire 1st Q I just kept looking at the clock thinking “I can’t believe it is still the 1st quarter.”
damn. what a play!
Yes…That’s an OMG play.
Dayum, Williams.
Cary Williams has more plays this year than Nnamdi in his entire tenure in Philly.
I’ll allow Mr. Sconces to play for me. Wow.
holy hell sconces for all, sconces forever
Sconces is a good tackler and all. But too bad he can’t cover.
First multi-interception game for RG since high school.
Throw it away, Vick!
I’ll personally drive Cary sconce shopping
It’s ok to throw the ball away there Vick.
Shady!!
Is this good defense by the Eagles, or just terrible offense by the Redskins? RGIII looks awful tonight.
Oh, dear Lord Shady!
Just. OH MY GOD
Got to start throwing ball away.
Madden is harder than this!
That was epic.
SportsCenter is going to be 4 hours long tomorrow when they have to show this entire game as a highlight reel.
Shady – 149 yards!
Another Monday Night Massacre, isn’t it, fellas?
Something about the Eagles at Washington huh?
It’s the humidity. Pigs don’t sweat good.
We’ve been saying all night that this is the most fun we’ve had since that game.
Wow! There’s the running game! This is unreal. A healthy o-line goes a loooong way.
This may be the one time this season I am happy that Gruden is still in the booth.
How many backs were picked before McCoy?
Man, this feels good.
I’ll second that.
I think my favorite part of all is the silence of the Redskins’ stadium.
Hah, they look so depressed.
That and the booing by the Skins fans.
Objectively, that was a nice football play.
Allen made a tackle.
Iverson?
Not in practice.
You know what sucks most about this game? It’s not televised in Australia! 🙁
I am so sorry. You are missing one hell of a game 🙁
I’m at work anyway – I’m a teacher and my senior PE class and I were keeping track during the first half (just on NFL.com)
Are your kids Eagl;es fans?
I’m trying!! It’s not a popular sport over here, most of them understand very little about the game.
Where’s Sav Rocca from?
Yeah, he’s from Aus. We’ve had a few punters now. Rocca, Ben Graham, Mat McBriar, Brad Wing and of course, Darren Bennett… They’ve each received token media coverage at best. Jesse Williams got more coverage with the draft this year.
A T D H E dot eu my friend
Can’t you watch it via NFL.com?
time difference = at work! (but have a period off at the moment)
wiziwig.com for free
trying now, cheers!
Jake Knott sighting there.
Hmmm…Knott is in for Kendricks. Any word on him??
His helmet got busted up on that sideline tackle he made., I think.
he was on the field on that play I think.
Gotta get this in before it’s too late: Just imagine how many less points our D would have given up so far if Curry were active tonight.
Nice long drive.
There it is. Boom.
Ouch. Salt in the wound.
That would have went in last year.
From 60 yards out probably.
Nah, it would’ve been a record, 71
And it would have been counted for 9 points… somehow.
And Jerry Jones would have slam dunked it as celebration.
Opponent misses a field goal! End of the world is nigh!
beautiful
Perfect! Just perfect!
Woo hoo! All that time wasted for 0 points.
Has anyone noticed much from Cox? I was hoping to see him make a little more of an impact, but I haven’t noticed him much beyond when I was focusing on him.
He got held on one of RGIII’s scrambles earlier (no flag though), otherwise I’ve not noticed him.
Can’t say I’ve seen a lot but, to be honest I’m not really watching him.
There’s been a disturbing lack of Cox pounding the open holes.
Wow…
I’m with you. Talk about classless.
Wow. If this wasn’t an NFC East team, I’d feel pity.
Are we going to keep burning it on offense?
DBs having been tackling all that well. But all’s good, right now.
Step up from last year. They would have just run away from the play or swatted at the ball.
Haha, that Shannahan face after the miss, priceless
This is cool watching McCoy look like he’s in Madden, but seriously, bring someone else in.
granted
This is cool but I wish Scarlet Johannson would show up at my house. *waits*
lol
Um…. did the crowd just become Eagles fans on that McCoy spin move?
Nah, I think the ‘Skins fans are so quiet, you can hear the Birds fans now.
I love how enraged the crowd is after the missed tackles.
I think Bryce Brown is suffering from the Skins playing every play he’s in as a run, since his pass blocking is sometimes shaky.
Thoroughly amazed. Pat Shurmur is an offensive mastermind
Honestly, I don’t think Shurmur has a whole lot to do with it.
…
(tongue in cheek)
WE NEED A SARCASM FONT
*thumbs up*
Can we not just append /s?
You know what’s amazing. That was the Eagles’ 4th punt.
ST is so much improved.
Love it. Fipp is my homeboy.
Anyone see what happened to Boykin?
I think he was in on the tackle on the first punt, stayed down afterwards.
Did you see the hit?
Too many bodies in close quarters, I didn’t see anything obvious.
He was back on the field (if a little slow) that play.
I’m curious if Eagles put in backups if up big late.
Considering we have 2 games in the next 10 days, I hope so.
Looks like it’s happening. Casey is in there at least. And Poyer.
Could just be “dinged up” subs though.
HOLY CRAP! IT’S STILL THE 3RD QUARTER!
Always frustrated me how Reid never pulled starters
One complaint here: too many WRs running open. If Griffin were playing better, this would be a very different game.
Can’t you just enjoy this for one game? 🙂
the past two drives have been pitch and catch for the most part
Not a good time to have time consuming drives though. I’m happy with a 3rd quarter tie
Got to believe Andy Reid is watching this game. Wonder what he’s thinking?
That he won by more?
Against the worst team in football.
Why does Shady have the ball in his hands? This is weird, Chip.
LOL!
Excellent
This defense sucks
(sarcasm fyi..)
We sort of knew that already. If we can’t get positive plays in the course of blitzing, we’re going to suck there.
I know! I can’t believe they allowed an offensive score!
I’ll take a 3rd quarter tie. The Redskins show no urgency.
I’m thinking it would be good practice to play Foles in the 4th quarter of most of these games we are winning big. Get more game experience and all! Should be plenty of opportunities to pull the starters this year 🙂
Only up 3 scores…
If the Eagles had 50+ points, I’d agree.
Yep, this is a team coming off a 4-12 season.
Every win counts, and I want this one!
No not winning big, many comebacks bigger than this.
I guess the sarcasm tag really is need. Exclamation points and smiley faces do not suffice…noted.
ST sucks. Can’t get past the 20….
If they leave Shady in, playing like this… he’s on track for what, 220+
IV time..lol
Shady is not sure what is happening.
Shady is leading the league in rushing.
Vick with a key block on that play… not sure what to think about that
Uh oh…
That’s at least the 3rd block I’ve seen Vick throw is body in to. I see that out of a young QB or college QB I think it’s awesome. I see that out of a 33 year old QB with an injury history, it gives me doubts about that guy’s football smarts.
In the NFC Championship game, great play. In the 1st game of the season… not so great.
Good point. Situational awareness is another big issue. He’s up by 16 in the 4th quarter of the 1st game of the year when he’s doing this.
The one thing I will say is, in the past, he hasn’t done things like that. In this game, he clearly is looking to make the block. You have to wonder if the coaches have told him to block.
Either way, I agree with you. I am not a fan of him throwing his body into a block like that. His health is way more important than getting a few yards on a play where we are up by 19. Furthermore, a defensive player will start to notice him trying to block and will take advantage of the opportunity to try and hit him hard.
You have to wonder if the coaches have told him to block. I did indeed wonder that. Just doesn’t seem that likely.
I would be surprised, but it’s just weird seeing him make those blocks. He didn’t do those types of things in the past, so something changed.
I think what’s changed is the introduction of the read option. Otherwise, he’d be way in the backfield like he always was.
Agreed that it’s weird. No theories to offer at this time. Doubt any information will be forthcoming. Hopefully Tommy can get to the bottom of this. Get on it Mr. Lawlor.
Flashes of 2012..
Actually, 2011.
Ugh. He never tucked that ball in that play.
Ouch. Unfortunately this game is not over.
Please don’t be Detroit game from 2012
Avant’s probably the last player I would both want and expect that to happen to.
Nice to see Cox make a play, but he went unblocked on that one…
Please, let’s not tank this….
Please.
sigh
rookie Poyer just got taken to school. Guess it’s time to break out the 1st half playbook again
Time to score here.
Gotta go back to what you know.
A lousy fg makes it a two td two 2 pt conversion game.
I enjoyed the romp, now it’s gut check.
^this
I am ready for some more ultra-offense.
Big time….love the option.
Great read, #7
Rambo looked bad there.
Times like these you need your running game.
first game of the year and Vick is already limping…great
This is my worry – that this game will prove to be a microcosm of the year. Vick taking a hellacious beating to pick up extra yards or block for the running backs and McCoy getting 35 carries a game is not a sustainable strategy for a 16 game season.
I think McCoy can hold up for a season or two. I think his overall peak would have at least 2 seasons cut off it going at this rate though. Not all doom and gloom. I could definitely see Brown and Polk getting more carries as the season goes on.
Vick clearly limping/hurt
Hope it’s not serious.
Looking ahead, San Diego has a pretty poor defense doesn’t it?
That hold was a killer.
Great punt. Turnover time.
I’m starting to get nervous. Vick is limping, the ‘Skins are surging.
Even when our O-Line isn’t sucking, Vick is still taking more hits than a quarterback should.
This is my biggest problem with Vick. His combination of brittleness and reckless disregard for his own health is hugely problematic in a starting quarterback. As much as I love his grit the pounding he subjects himself to makes it pretty much impossible to win over the long haul with him.
I think the most undeniable, most likely to be consistent throughout the season is the same thing that was most apparent in the preseason. Our speacial teams are GOOD.
this game should have been put away awhile ago.
Boykin didn’t look to be in any hurry to get off the ground. 🙁
Haven’t heard Graham’s name once tonight.
Ah, what happened to defense?
Pessimistic view: Bob knocked the rust off.
we are 2 CBs down. Both Boykin and Williams is hurt
Los Angeles Ram?
old school
Haha exactly.
Used a time-out. Good.
They’ll be more to nit pick about later?
well we knew this would be a year of ups and downs…team needs to stay focused and finish this puppy off…
Ups and downs but not in the same game….yeah they need a big play.
I think the common problem theme on D all year will be the lack of pass rush. If they aren’t blitzing, they aren’t getting to the passer. The back end of that secondary just isn’t good enough to cover for extended periods.
Boyking’s been playing hurt past two drives, looks like he’s finally replaced by Poyer
Boykin is still in there.
……..
nice
Cary, I love you.
SIGH OF RELIEF
SCONCES FOR EVERYONE!
/thumbs up…nice hold
Game. Sconces.
That’s why we got Williams!
now that’s the sort of play you need playmakers to make. Hats off to Cary
This is how it supposed to be? Score a lot and have the defense make enough plays.
Heart Attacks for everyone!
why do they keep confusing bryce brown and brandon boykin
dumb…come on
Nice play by Cary Williams. He may be a headcase and not the best cover guy, but he’s not afraid to play a physical brand of corner. Shades of Troy Vincent.
These penalties are back breaking.
Andy, is that you?
Nice reach Avant.
Made up for the fumble!
Clutch.
Keep talking Hall. Give us a free 15.
Difference between pass defense last year and pass defense this year is that the DB are making plays on the ball a heckuvalot more.
DBs are actually in the camera shot when the ball reaches the receiver.
Truth.
Williams and Fletcher do not have the talent that Asomugha and DRC do, but they like playing football a lot more, and that counts for a lot.
Hope it is not a hernia…he does not look good
ugh, a first down there would have gone a really long way toward finishing off this game.
Donnie Jones is an awesome punter.
Great game tonight.
Confused to why you don’t take the delay of game there.
Not another corner. Dang.
Welp, the good news is their heads can’t get too big after that first half.
Way to spin it. Agassi would be proud. 🙂
Donnie Jones is a massive upgrade over pretty much any punter we had in the Andy Reid era. It’s such a stealth weapon to have a guy who can consistently execute the pooch punt.
yea those had been touchbacks by Henry or McBriar last two years
Trent is having a great game.
Just need to get the ball back and this game is over.
The ‘Skins are taking way too long on this drive. I’ll take it.
yea, outside of the TD after the Avant fumble, the Skins have used a lot of time for only 7 points
This offense is scary. Clean up the mistakes…ultra scary.
You could easily be talking about either team right there.
I’m obviously an Eagles fan.
Never would have guessed.
Oh ffs.
Are you kidding me
what a terrible play by Chung. got caught flat footed
Chung exposed.
Get the onside kick it’s game.
Fact.
well right now if I had to trust one phase, it is ST’s to win this thing
ST, Stare that ball into your hands
all that ST practice better pay off
If they fuck it up, they all have to deal with the Fipp stare for a week.
my god that was close
GAME!
my heart…
That was a lot closer than it should have been.
Offsides, game was over anyway.
now just have to hope none of the injuries are serious
Whew…undefeated
I remember saying this last year, but still a win is win
This feels very different. But your point is still valid.
Expectations are certainly different. overall I also think we played better today, we never fell totally apart, and the first half was amazing
Last year the Eagles went into the season in Super Bowl-or-bust mode. A narrow victory over a crappy team like the Browns was a matter for relief mixed with consternation.
This year, they’re going into the season as a rebuilding team with a lot of new, young pieces and an exciting, innovative new offense. Given the youth of the team, any victory, particularly one in which the possibilities of Kelly’s offense were apparent, is to be savored.
Forget about expectations for a minute.
Last year, they struggled against one of the worst teams in the league. This year, they dominated the defending division champs, then cut it close by playing too conservatively. HUGE difference.
I’ll take the opening week win, on the road against the division champs, but that was way too close after the throttling they put on the skins to open the game.
I think this defense has its work cut out for it going forward. I’d like to think they can go all Chicago Bears and force massive amounts of turnovers, but I’m skeptical
Final tally:
Pass: Run = 25:49
Mind = Blown.
Brain cannot compute
It was very run heavy, but Kelly was extremely balanced when the game was seemingly still a close contest. So Kelly used ARs mantra of throw to get the lead, but then actually ran to protect the lead. The team struggled though once we became very run heavy.
OMG watch pregame..Cox was caught red handed checking out a redskins cheerrleaders ass and giving a nod of approval not knowing he was on tv lmaooo awesome
gif needed… of the cheerleader…
I’m going to find when they do the replay of the postgame and hope I can record it. it came right out of the gate of postgame, the Redskins cheerleaders were walking practically along with the Eagles, which I’ve never seen before. Cox was busted, god if I can get it…….the cheerleader was smoking, along with the restr that were smoking
Is it safe to restart the heart now?
Until next week.
Glad to get a win. Still, there have to be serious concerns going forward. The offense completely stalled in the second half, the defense looked pretty bad once Griffin started playing like a competent NFL quarterback, and giving Shady 30+ carries every week, with Vick serving as a lead blocker on many of them, is not an offensive approach that will be sustainable over the long term. I expect Kelly is smart enough to realize all this and make adjustments, which is good, because he’s going to have to.
We was clearly in protect lead mode by most of the 2nd half. We passed like 5 times in the 2nd half
Part of that was that every time we did try to pass the Redskins blitzed the holy hell out of Vick and succeeded in forcing him to scramble or make hurried decisions. I’m sure Kelly didn’t want to risk a turnover by throwing more, particularly after the Avant fumble got the Skins back in the game. I don’t think it can be entirely blamed on playcalling – Washington clearly looked like the superior team in the second half.
Andy Reid would still have passed the hell out of the ball. This is just what protecting a lead really looks like.
Right, but a really good team, with a really balanced, dynamic offense – like, say, the Broncos – would’ve kept throwing successfully and broken the back of the opponent before going into “sit on the lead” mode. 26 points is not a safe lead with an entire half left to play, particularly with this defense.
The Redskins was 4th in points right after the Broncos last year. Also the Skins is a balanced offense.
Now we know why Havili wasn’t retained… we have Vick to take his place.
just realized the skins scored 20 consecutive points. that’s not good, not matter how you try to justify it.
Didinger made a great point. This offense is built to go, so playing slow down, which was totally the way you should play, wasn’t fitting their style. Yes, need improvement, but crap, did we win a division game last year?
It’s week 1. PSU lost its first 2 game of 2012 but kept improving and finsihed 8-2 the rest of the way and were a drastically different team at the end of the year than they were at the beginning.Eagles started off 3-1 last year and finished off 4-12. Completely different team after week 6 than they were before. Tonight was completely schizophrienic. If anything, tonihgt is just more of what we’re used to. God only knows what to expect from here on out.
typos suck.
