PHI 34 , DET 20

Posted: December 8th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 217 Comments »

The Eagles won a crazy game. Huge. The conditions were bad and the Eagles struggled early. Chip Kelly and the staff made some adjustments. The players adjusted what they did. And the team never got down or overly frustrated. They kept grinding away and next thing you know Shady McCoy was loose in the secondary and the Eagles had an avalanche of yards and points.

I think you can qualify this as a character win. Being down 14-0 in the snow and then going on a 34-6 run is pretty darn impressive. And it wasn’t like the Eagles got fluky TDs off turnovers or crazy plays. The Eagles took control of the LOS and took over the game. They made tough catches down the field while the Lions dropped short passes. Real impressive effort by the offense and defense.

STs? Not so good. I think we need to appease the Football Gods by sacrificing one member of the coverage units. I’ll let the team captains figure out who that should be.

Lots to write about this game.

Eagles are now 8-5 and in 1st place in the NFC East. The pressure is on Dallas to win tomorrow night and stay tied.

If Seattle beats SF, the Eagles will have the #6 spot in the Wild Card standings.

Fun day.

Check out how similar these runs by Shady are:

Took a bit of heat for saying if Brown didn’t start running the ball and helping them close out games they would find someone who would. Looks like Polk answered the call. He should be #2 on the depth chart.

  4. 4 theycallmerob said at 7:03 PM on December 8th, 2013:

hope he is going forward. Granted, shady was a monster going N-S, but Polk showed (like in college) that he can grind out tough yards as well. May help with the 4th qtr scoring “issues” (not that they showed today).

also, glad to see you on these boards as well

I’m not gonna lie. I thought we lost this game.

I stopped following the game and started running around with my 11-month-old son.

We kept scoring, and in true Bud Light fashion, I had to keep running with the boy. It feels good knowing that I contributed to the win.

Biggest story of the day to me was… WHERE WERE THE SNOWBALLS FROM THE FANS??? I thought this was being played in Philadelphia. How could there not have been snowballs pelting the Lions sideline?!?!

In all seriousness I’m glad that wasn’t a storyline!

  26. 26 Teehee said at 6:57 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Maybe Philly fans got lost and accidentally went to the Ravens game. Adrian Peterson says snowballs were thrown over there.

  29. 29 Mike Flick said at 6:42 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Assuming a Cowboy win is blasphemy.

  30. 30 jackpotsdad said at 5:07 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Crazy game. If you’re a Lions fan, you’re pissed! The Eagles gifted them two TDs with terribad special teams coverage and a third via short field position after the Foles INT.

However, strangely, this ended up playing into the Eagles hands. The Lions offense seems to never got in track, and they made a series of horrible mental errors – turnovers and dropped passes. As much as the Eagles gifted them almost three scores, boy did the Lions do almost everything they can to lose the game.

Offensive line gets the game ball! And Shady was just simply huge. Great call by Chip to keep running it knowing that in the snow, defensive lineman can’t get set. Resulted in several Shady long runs and even Foles rush TD where you just watched the Lions line just get tractored back.

Most fun 2nd half of the year BY FAR!

  31. 31 BlindChow said at 5:10 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Even before those gift TD’s…the fumbles! They WANTED us to win!

  32. 32 Ark87 said at 6:44 PM on December 8th, 2013:

I’m just glad it wasn’t very close, one of our scoring drives was propped up by some suspect officiating. Would hate to hear the whiners for a second week straight.

  33. 33 BlindChow said at 6:48 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Scoped out some Lions blogs. The fans seem to be lamenting the officiating but clearly blame their players for folding in the second half. They also had some not-so-nice things to say about the Wide Nine (which is weird, since they had a solid run defense until today…).

  34. 34 BrianS said at 7:05 PM on December 8th, 2013:

The officiating didn’t seem too bad, but I thought the announcing of the officiating was terrible. When Suh was called for holding on the PAT attempt, “I don’t know why they were calling him for holding; he had his hands on Kelce’s jersey.”

  35. 35 Kevin_aka_RC said at 5:07 PM on December 8th, 2013:

I ripped Kelly for a terrible 1st half, but he made some great adjustments in the second half. Lots more play-action and repeatedly used posts to back off the Lions safeties (since they played the 1st half in the box).

  36. 36 NinjaP said at 5:07 PM on December 8th, 2013:

  37. 37 bdbd20 said at 5:09 PM on December 8th, 2013:

I think so. This is what we all needed to see.

Foles has a bad first quarter/half and then battles and does enough to win.

I watched the Seahawks/49ers game and man that was a great physical back-and-forth between 2 team that don’t really like one another.

Don’t see the Eagles being good enough to win on the road in NO or Seattle. Still put the 49ers as a better overall team too because of their front 7 on defense.

  41. 41 BlindChow said at 5:12 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Another underrated reason we won: Chung didn’t take out a single teammate!

The scrappiest, under-manned Eagles defense team since the Vermeil era. Coincidentally playing a 2-gap 34 defense.

Cary Williams may have his limitations. But the Birds’ defense is as much a reflection of his attitude as anyone on that side of the ball.

  55. 55 Steag209 said at 5:39 PM on December 8th, 2013:

I agree, while Williams may piss us off to no end sometimes, I think he’s an integral part to this defense from a mindset/personality standpoint and I love him for that…while hating him for his infuriating coverage issues

Chip’s genius was truly on display in this game. The two ST TD’s forced the Detriot offense to sit on the sidelines and freeze and also forced the Detroit defense to come back out on the field and get tired.

  109. 109 Teehee said at 6:33 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Great win, but one of the things that I have realized is that the football gods favor Peyton Manning over Foles. He could have broke the game touchdown record in Oakland, but they took control of Chip’s brain and had Nick subbed out. And of course, this game he had a chance to break the consecutive TDs without an interception (also held by Manning), but the Gods brought down this absolute hellstorm and caused Nick’s first interception. I’m filing a complaint for this unfair bias.

heh. its kind of funny to look back at this offseason now. most of us would agree that our expectations were that we just wanted to see the team compete and see that the young guys can learn a new scheme on both offense and defense.

    Yep

  122. 122 BobSmith77 said at 9:04 PM on December 8th, 2013:

Nope. Titans’ defense is arguably better than the Eagles and certainly more physical.

Manning obliterated the Titans’ defense in the 2nd half today in the freezing cold in Denver. Manning is playing at a level right now like Jordan did. It would be a fun game to watch as the team go up and down the field but Manning has 45 TDs this year and only needs 5 more to break Brady’s record of 50 in ’07.

  123. 123 Anders said at 9:21 PM on December 8th, 2013:

yea, but this offense would also be able to match Denver for most of the game.

is it true that Vick & Foles have the same number of starts?
if thats the case, Foles has more rushing TDs than Vick.

doesn’t mean squat in the end, but it is kind of funny to see that Foles is exceeding our expectations as a runner.

edit: i think nfl.com may not have updated the stats for Foles for todays game so this might be off. but still…

    Matt Stafford

Has some “gunslinger” mentality in possibly a bad way. Trying to pick up that bad snap as opposed to just falling on it. And earlier in the game picking up a fumble and trying to wheel and throw down the field as Cole came at him. I suppose when you have Megatron down the field “why not?” but maybe you have to eat it in the snow.

Also – for fun – here is his “surprise snap” face.

Been very refreshing to see a Philly team that plays smart, hard, and has overachieved so far. Can’t really think of the last Eagles’ team I would put in that bucket. Maybe the ’06 team after McNabb went down & they got embarrassed by the Colts on the prime time.

  174. 174 BobSmith77 said at 9:19 PM on December 8th, 2013:

What happened in the 2nd half that the Eagles were able to run up the middle between the tackles?

Can’t remember an Eagles’ games where the interior O-line were getting no push up front at all in the 1st half and all of a sudden spring blocking that let the RB go through the line untouched and run wild in the 2nd half.

  175. 175 Baloophi said at 9:21 PM on December 8th, 2013:

A lot of that has to do with the old boss, who famously said the team had to prove it could run early in the game or he would take it completely off the table.

Maclin (knock on the wood) has been the only key Eagles’ player though who has missed any kind of meaningful amount of time.

we’ve had plenty of injuries over the years (1991 comes to mind). Who knows what Bush does in the snow. The Lions scored one offensive TD and they started on our 20. I’m not going to get caught up in how lucky the Eagles are with injuries and/or calls from the refs. The Eagles are making their own luck and taking advantage of opportunities.

Every team that does well gets some luck.
