PHI 34 , DET 20
Posted: December 8th, 2013 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 217 Comments »The Eagles won a crazy game. Huge. The conditions were bad and the Eagles struggled early. Chip Kelly and the staff made some adjustments. The players adjusted what they did. And the team never got down or overly frustrated. They kept grinding away and next thing you know Shady McCoy was loose in the secondary and the Eagles had an avalanche of yards and points.
I think you can qualify this as a character win. Being down 14-0 in the snow and then going on a 34-6 run is pretty darn impressive. And it wasn’t like the Eagles got fluky TDs off turnovers or crazy plays. The Eagles took control of the LOS and took over the game. They made tough catches down the field while the Lions dropped short passes. Real impressive effort by the offense and defense.
STs? Not so good. I think we need to appease the Football Gods by sacrificing one member of the coverage units. I’ll let the team captains figure out who that should be.
Lots to write about this game.
Eagles are now 8-5 and in 1st place in the NFC East. The pressure is on Dallas to win tomorrow night and stay tied.
If Seattle beats SF, the Eagles will have the #6 spot in the Wild Card standings.
Fun day.

Check out how similar these runs by Shady are:

Wonder how many times Lesean had to yell “MCCOY!”
I really want him mic’d up every game
Took a bit of heat for saying if Brown didn’t start running the ball and helping them close out games they would find someone who would. Looks like Polk answered the call. He should be #2 on the depth chart.
hope he is going forward. Granted, shady was a monster going N-S, but Polk showed (like in college) that he can grind out tough yards as well. May help with the 4th qtr scoring “issues” (not that they showed today).
also, glad to see you on these boards as well
I was happy with Brown’s running in this game.
I’m not gonna lie. I thought we lost this game.
I stopped following the game and started running around with my 11-month-old son.
We kept scoring, and in true Bud Light fashion, I had to keep running with the boy. It feels good knowing that I contributed to the win.
Better keep it up for the rest of the season. Just in case.
Speaking of, I am getting tired of eating the same meal every week like I have since we started winning. But I’ll be strong for the sake of the team.
Also, what about Roger’s pants?
lol that trick died a few weeks ago with the Cowboys game. now my plan is to play video games until the game starts and go from there.
also, i HAVE to watch it on my slingbox, even if its on TV here (thats why we lost the giants game)
I started washing the dishes. I hopr I don’t have to keep that up.
The Chip Kelly era will not begin with a losing record.
The Era has become an Epoch!
Easy. Need to win some SBs first.
Congrats to the Eagles and to the sideline reporter! Both looked good today.
she almost made the first half watchable
What a babe. Notice how the lineman’s measurements were always about 2 inches more than hers?
I almost passed out when I saw her grab a ruler, about to measure something.
http://abload.de/img/mollymcgrath9xieq.gif
There were plenty of jokes about that where I watched the game.
wow what a game. I think our signing of evan mathis and the drafting of jason kelce were two of the most underated personnel decisions the eagles have made
also, as mentioned last week, signing Donnie Jones
donnie mvp jones
“most valuable punter”
Huge win!
Biggest story of the day to me was… WHERE WERE THE SNOWBALLS FROM THE FANS??? I thought this was being played in Philadelphia. How could there not have been snowballs pelting the Lions sideline?!?!
In all seriousness I’m glad that wasn’t a storyline!
Maybe Philly fans got lost and accidentally went to the Ravens game. Adrian Peterson says snowballs were thrown over there.
#6? We are leading the East!
perhaps he means in case the cowboys win, eagles would slip to 6th
Assuming a Cowboy win is blasphemy.
Crazy game. If you’re a Lions fan, you’re pissed! The Eagles gifted them two TDs with terribad special teams coverage and a third via short field position after the Foles INT.
However, strangely, this ended up playing into the Eagles hands. The Lions offense seems to never got in track, and they made a series of horrible mental errors – turnovers and dropped passes. As much as the Eagles gifted them almost three scores, boy did the Lions do almost everything they can to lose the game.
Offensive line gets the game ball! And Shady was just simply huge. Great call by Chip to keep running it knowing that in the snow, defensive lineman can’t get set. Resulted in several Shady long runs and even Foles rush TD where you just watched the Lions line just get tractored back.
Most fun 2nd half of the year BY FAR!
Even before those gift TD’s…the fumbles! They WANTED us to win!
I’m just glad it wasn’t very close, one of our scoring drives was propped up by some suspect officiating. Would hate to hear the whiners for a second week straight.
Scoped out some Lions blogs. The fans seem to be lamenting the officiating but clearly blame their players for folding in the second half. They also had some not-so-nice things to say about the Wide Nine (which is weird, since they had a solid run defense until today…).
The officiating didn’t seem too bad, but I thought the announcing of the officiating was terrible. When Suh was called for holding on the PAT attempt, “I don’t know why they were calling him for holding; he had his hands on Kelce’s jersey.”
I ripped Kelly for a terrible 1st half, but he made some great adjustments in the second half. Lots more play-action and repeatedly used posts to back off the Lions safeties (since they played the 1st half in the box).
Great win. Time to start considering the birds one of the better teams in the NFC?
I think so. This is what we all needed to see.
Foles has a bad first quarter/half and then battles and does enough to win.
I think we’re definitely coming on at the right time. Have to be one of the hottest in the League.
Good Disco Stew pic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ql4jKYbsfc
That is awesome.
I watched the Seahawks/49ers game and man that was a great physical back-and-forth between 2 team that don’t really like one another.
Don’t see the Eagles being good enough to win on the road in NO or Seattle. Still put the 49ers as a better overall team too because of their front 7 on defense.
Another underrated reason we won: Chung didn’t take out a single teammate!
Probably because he couldn’t see them in the blizzard
Oh man, fell asleep in my chair when refs were reviewing that last play of the Ravens game ….how’d that turn out?
they won
thought he was out…wanted vikes to have a w before we play them
So they’d be overconfident? I’m hoping for demoralized.
If they are totally down, they might sit AP as well.
AP got carted off the field, I love watching that guy play…but not against the Eagles, hopefully it’s not too serious, but takes a few weeks to heal up.
I think he will be shut down for the rest of the season
Last two teams had big wins b4 we palyed them
Heh heh. Not only do Giants fans have to endure a beatdown in San Diego, they have to do it while listening to Moose, Goose, and Kenny.
Sad to say, I’m actually happy to hear Troy on the SF game after the horrible announcing last week! Happiness is very relative!
Think the’ve seen that shuttle pass a few times b4
The scrappiest, under-manned Eagles defense team since the Vermeil era. Coincidentally playing a 2-gap 34 defense.
Cary Williams may have his limitations. But the Birds’ defense is as much a reflection of his attitude as anyone on that side of the ball.
I agree, while Williams may piss us off to no end sometimes, I think he’s an integral part to this defense from a mindset/personality standpoint and I love him for that…while hating him for his infuriating coverage issues
And did you notice how lovely the sconces looked in the snow?
Well at least It takes an act of god for Foles to throw an INT…..and I thought they were buddies.
Jimmy K says that Lesean McCoy is now the franchise leader in rushing yards in a single game.
didn’t they say that during the game…..was watching and listening to Merrill and Mike, they did
ah i didnt hear it, its possible.
tv guys might not have
I apologize in advance to everyone on here and to Tommy, I hope you don’t ban me for my inappropriate language.
Here goes: It seriously gets my penis aroused when Foles mentions that he’s proud to be a Philadelphia Eagle.
Foles doesn’t ….but would sure like to see a pic of his g/f ….she might, wonder what kind of taste he has?
dude
was wondering why I got the “dude” and Phyxius didn’t glad to see he got a doubble.
Woah! lol
dude x 2
Shady broke two huge runs in this game. thats gotta make his yards/carry average jump by quite a bit!
Peterson went out of the Viks game hurt so I guess Shady will again be the NFL rushing leader.
And! Our Defense kept their <21 points streak going!
Only gave up 8 points and that was on a short field after a turnover. Great game by them even if the snow assisted a bit.
I know but, correct me if I’m wrong, for some reason the NFL counts all points scored against the defense regardless of how scored
Yeh, that’s what I was wondering. The NFL does that.
And that’s against a powergouse offense.
First time poster but a long term eagles fan from Sydney, Australia. Up each and every Monday morning at 5am watching the game… always into work late on a Monday as a result! Gee, that was an awesome game today, had everything, still pumped! I am sure my neigbours are wondering what on earth goes on each Monday morning that Apartment No 6 could be making so much racket so early in the morning. Bring on next week. Enjoy reading all the discussions. T-Law, keep up the great work!
Glad the Eagles are rewarding you this year.
Nice!
That’s awesome!
Your post has also inspired me to finally post! long time lurker of the many eagles blogs, also from sydney-australia. sunday afternoon games kill my monday morning at work too!
China here. I haven’t watched the games live since NYG, and I’ve been resisting the urge to stay up to watch them since we started winning. Gotta keep the streak alive. I wake up unprompted at about 5 am now check the score and go back to sleep dreaming of eagles wins. Then I download the games the next day.
Football makes it through the firewall?
Awesome to hear of so many dedicated, International fans.
Yeah, I stream them through firstrow and actually the reliability has increased with each passing year that I’ve been here (3 years).
Originally from around Philly so not sure if I qualify as 100% international. 😉
Chip said the made adjustments at half……wondering what they were …like a different cleat or something with shoes….Shady couldn’t make a cut in !st half
He had been holding the playsheet upside down.
He accidentally picked up an old Andy Reid playbook. He thought something was off when instead of plays it just said “Pass no matter what” over and over again.
I think Prater for Denver just set the FG distance record. Holy ish.
Yup, 64yds. Of course, that is in Denver.
flubber?
easier to hit a long FG in Denver
That’s because a yard in Denver is only 29 inches!
More talk of inches?
do you know what flubber is?
The movie with Robin Williams?
ACViking would have said Fred MacMurray.
hate to say this…..thats the one I was thinking of….
And shockingly, it wasn’t against the Eagles.
After this game, I’m having real trouble looking at the 49ers-Seahawks game and comprehending how football can be played on a field that has anything less than 6 inches of snow.
Also, ‘Skins got blasted.
G’men getting blasted.
Good day so far.
I wouldn’t be sad if the skins beat the Chiefs. There’s no worries about them coming back this year and why let them improve their draft pick? lol
you mean the 1st they do not have? 😛
love it
interesting question from “TFTribe” on BGN.
” Has there ever been an NFL game where not a single point came from kicks?”
has to be a game with only a safety
not to mention some 0-0 ties
Chip’s genius was truly on display in this game. The two ST TD’s forced the Detriot offense to sit on the sidelines and freeze and also forced the Detroit defense to come back out on the field and get tired.
The Dark Lord is wise.
You are a wise man.
I *LOVE* this team!!! Did you see those big fellas after Nicky Six’s QB sneak? Pumped and giddy! Football Sunday is a joyful thing again, and that has nothing to do with W’s and L’s. (Although I love the W’s, don’t get me wrong.)
Great win, but one of the things that I have realized is that the football gods favor Peyton Manning over Foles. He could have broke the game touchdown record in Oakland, but they took control of Chip’s brain and had Nick subbed out. And of course, this game he had a chance to break the consecutive TDs without an interception (also held by Manning), but the Gods brought down this absolute hellstorm and caused Nick’s first interception. I’m filing a complaint for this unfair bias.
BTW, go Chicago. Go Seattle.
This no longer is the team that got steamrolled by the Broncos, they could play with them now. Now saying they would win, but they’re very legit now. And so young, they have the makings of a nice, long run. ‘knock wood’
Just think what another off season, FA and draft to add more Kelly type players and for the guys to get even more comfortable with the scheme
heh. its kind of funny to look back at this offseason now. most of us would agree that our expectations were that we just wanted to see the team compete and see that the young guys can learn a new scheme on both offense and defense.
regardless of how this season ends up, i think we can all say that this “rebuilding” year was a pretty big success.
8 wins with 3 left. Who would’ve thought? I don’t know the over/under for wins in Vegas, but I’m sure they already passed it.
I think it was 7.5
Yes I had 100 on over. A couple of bets left I won’t jinx.
nice. How much did you win on that bet?
Looks like 100 even. Have a friend who lives in Vegas who just held the tix.
Well done.
when kelly said he expected to win this year, i seriously doubted him. sort of made me worried even. lesson learned, never doubting him again
Yep
Nope. Titans’ defense is arguably better than the Eagles and certainly more physical.
Manning obliterated the Titans’ defense in the 2nd half today in the freezing cold in Denver. Manning is playing at a level right now like Jordan did. It would be a fun game to watch as the team go up and down the field but Manning has 45 TDs this year and only needs 5 more to break Brady’s record of 50 in ’07.
yea, but this offense would also be able to match Denver for most of the game.
is it true that Vick & Foles have the same number of starts?
if thats the case, Foles has more rushing TDs than Vick.
doesn’t mean squat in the end, but it is kind of funny to see that Foles is exceeding our expectations as a runner.
edit: i think nfl.com may not have updated the stats for Foles for todays game so this might be off. but still…
dam you seahawks
Matt Stafford
Has some “gunslinger” mentality in possibly a bad way. Trying to pick up that bad snap as opposed to just falling on it. And earlier in the game picking up a fumble and trying to wheel and throw down the field as Cole came at him. I suppose when you have Megatron down the field “why not?” but maybe you have to eat it in the snow.
Also – for fun – here is his “surprise snap” face.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB5JXLJaa0c
Matt Stafford has maybe the greatest arm in the NFL, so he think he can always make the play.
He is like Vick, just with his arm instead of his legs
Just a thought: When was the last time the Eagles were in playoff contention this late in a season and didn’t get in? Seems like recently, everytime we had a chance to get in, we got in.
2011, I think we was alive with 2 weeks left
Okay, change that to “serious playoff contention” ^^
Maybe 1997? We had 6 wins and lost last 3, else it would be 1994 where we was 7-2 and ended 7-9
We were 6 and 8!! Quite the longshot!
Yowza…
RG3and10!
RGWheeWee, what is that smell?
(Answer: The Redskins)
Landover, more like Gameover, am i right!
…sorry, that’ll be the last one
Love it!
So overhyped! And they so overpaid for him.
boy, that is beautiful! and to think, after Wash years of misery, add in rg3 being fresh and exciting, i was rooting for them last year. fans ran their mouths way too much past off-season, shot all that goodwill in the butt
Holiday gift thought for the stray Washington fan in your life?
Customized wall-mural from Fathead with the above image.
but I hope they win out because I don’t want Shanny fired.
But what if they bring back Joe Gibbs again? Again?
On NFLNetwork, LaDainian Tomlinson thinks Carlos Polk had a nice day for the Eagles.
yea heard that.
muy bien
John Lynch was more impressed with Curtis Polk in-game.
John Lynch was getting concussions before it was cool. I actually very much worry about him on that front.
I found this to be one of the most enjoyable games in a long time.
Me too!
But I was late for the start of the game, so when I rushed home and flipped the TV on about 2 minutes in to the game and saw all the snow I was really, really pissed off at how unfair Mother Nature was being to us… I thought for sure we’d lose a heartbreaker.
Wish we could have had all the players mic’d up. Would have loved to hear some comments. Wonder why Megatron was saying when he got the face full of snow. Looked like fun… Especially for us!
if i get a vote, mine’s for Casey matthews…well, just because
This is the best-felling Eagles win I can remember in a while. The heart and enthusiam to come back from that defecit was so encouraging to see and McCoy running wild through defenders and seven inches of snow was magical. There was just something about this game….
Couldn’t agree more
The win gave me the feels like the Miracle in the Meadowlands 2.
Must admit. Thought we were dead. That was euphoric! In the beginning of the season I would have been happy with six wins and a lot of heart and fight. We have some talented players, but relatively speaking, our team has average talent, especially on defense. I am totally amazed at this team. The chemistry, heart, and fight this team has blows my mind. Great job Chip. Extremely excited for this team and it’s future!!

This is the blog Jimmy is a part of. He isnt the only 1 writing articles in it.
I understand that, but I don’t see ANY kempski articles on that link or any others. This only started happening about a week ago. Usually most articles that pop up on that link are his or at least Eagle related.
I see this
http://i.imgur.com/O71LLmf.png?1
These “10 awards” articles have been a weekly feature and they are always excellent.
I don’t see that at all
Tommy has the link on his homepage here
You want to go straight to their Red Zone blog.

I’ve had same problem. I think when there is a new article, the link works. If not a new article, goes to the generic philly.com news link.
Something that hasnt really been discussed is that on the last Lions drive the 3 man DL was from left to right: Cox-Curry-Graham
yep that is right, Curry was playing NT and Graham was a DE.
I thought it was nice of the coaches to have so much faith in Curry and Graham’s pass rushing ability that they are out on a very important drive.
How cool was that.
we currently have the second longest winning streak in the league with 5 in a row. Carolina is first with 8 in a row.
Now we have the longest Winning streak
No longer Carolina!! What was…. Ain’t!!
Met-Life stadium would almost be like a home game for us. When we play there for the second time this season.
off topic….
think Arians will send a review of this play to the league office?
http://deadspin.com/pay-no-attention-to-darnell-dockett-stomping-on-hands-1479224484
In retrospect, I’m not sure why we’re surprised this guy is a clown…
Also, he seemed much more likeable as comic relief in films of the 1970’s and 1980’s than as an NFL head coach…
Why the Cardinals thought playing Rudy’s dad qualified him to coach professional football is beyond me.
Been very refreshing to see a Philly team that plays smart, hard, and has overachieved so far. Can’t really think of the last Eagles’ team I would put in that bucket. Maybe the ’06 team after McNabb went down & they got embarrassed by the Colts on the prime time.
What happened in the 2nd half that the Eagles were able to run up the middle between the tackles?
Can’t remember an Eagles’ games where the interior O-line were getting no push up front at all in the 1st half and all of a sudden spring blocking that let the RB go through the line untouched and run wild in the 2nd half.
A lot of that has to do with the old boss, who famously said the team had to prove it could run early in the game or he would take it completely off the table.
Eagles caught 2 breaks the last 2 weeks with Ellington and Bush out. Both guys bring a unique element and big play capability their replacements simply don’t have.
Hopefully the good providence on the injury front keeps working out for the Eagles.
Both Lions and Cardinals also had huge break playing against Patrick Chung.
Don’t forget we’ve been playing with our “backup” quarterback and lost our #2 receiver before the season began.
Maclin (knock on the wood) has been the only key Eagles’ player though who has missed any kind of meaningful amount of time.
One of the things that concerned me going into the season was the lack of depth almost everywhere. Luckily for the Eagles, they haven’t had to really find out so far.
I was being facetious, but I get you.
Injuries are so fickle, it really comes down to coaching and preparation… two areas we suddenly seem to excel in…
just think. a few weeks ago, we were all thrilled that Wolfe could come off the bench and fill in for Chung. now we all can’t wait til he gets back!
And Arelious Benn who could have been our number 3 receiver.
we’ve had plenty of injuries over the years (1991 comes to mind). Who knows what Bush does in the snow. The Lions scored one offensive TD and they started on our 20. I’m not going to get caught up in how lucky the Eagles are with injuries and/or calls from the refs. The Eagles are making their own luck and taking advantage of opportunities.
Every team that does well gets some luck.
If next week was ever a ‘trap game’ especially with Peterson out, I can’t think of a bigger one for the Eagles the past 5 years.
This was the best day of NFL I can remember in a long, long time. A ton of compelling and interesting games with several last minute finishes.
Corderelle Paterson scares me, both as a WR and as a returner.
He scares me as a speller.
Is that an obscure Italian form of pasta? An unusual fabric?
Vikes have all 3 of their wins at home
They also had Peterson in those games.
what’s the word on Peterson?
It is a sprained foot.
ok I know you aren’t the team doctor, but I meant is he likely to play against the Eagles?
yea, i’m just trying to not be too complacent about this game. don’t want to look past this team.
I’m starting to believe this team does not think that way. Actually think they prepare and execute like true professionals.
Geico needs a “happier than Lesean McCoy under Chip Kelly” commercial. As much as I loved Big Red, you know down 14 and with Shady losing yards in bunches trying to juke it, we would been passing every single down….in a freaking blizzard. That is my favorite change Chip has brought.
Thank you for your post. I can’t say often enough how glad I am that Reid left so that Shady gets to have this kind of career.
i feel bad that i keep coming back here to post random things, but i’m still amped up after this game. this was the most fun i’ve had in a long time watching eagles football!
but this is just awesome.

He actually looks kind of like an Eagle in that (like the actual animal, landing onto its perch).
the most accurate assessment of today’s weather i’ve seen

So was today a record for most two-point conversion attempts in a single game?
Good news about the Vikings game.
If this happens again, we know we can play on the surface…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAyLX2hY7E0
how is this good news. The game will be postponed until the following Tuesday.
We will challenge Minnesota’s honor by offering to play outdoors at the Golden Gopher stadium.
Also, for what it’s worth, the design for the new Vikings stadium looks pretty sweet…
I imagine it’ll be a great venue for the Final Four as well…
My wife commented during the game that football in the snow must be fun for these guys, reminding them of their childhoods. After a moment, I told her that the QB is from Texas, throwing to a guy from Southern California and a guy from Florida.
Did Foles ever play in the snow before? Texas and Arizona make it seem unlikely.
I think they all said it was a new experience for them (Foles, Jackson, and even McCoy). Jackson said he had always dreamed about playing in conditions like this, and McCoy did mention that the snow cushioned all of the tackles. Kelly did say all the players really looked like they did enjoy playing in it (presumably once they started having some offensive success…)
McCoy said he had, just never to this extreme.
Foles had a year in Michigan State… doesn’t mean he ever played in the elements, but he certainly would’ve walked through them to class. And if that class was chemistry (ha!), he also would have studies those elements.
They said ‘no’ during the broadcast.

Fathead!
Am I wrong in saying that may have been the toughest game left on the schedule? This team could really go 10-6 or even 11-5. That would be mind blowing. I would have to change my pants every hour on the hour for a week straight!
i’m not going to sleep on any team left. Chicago always gives us trouble. and Dallas…. oh how i don’t like Dallas…
