Shrine Game

The East-West Shrine Game is today at 4pm. This game is mostly mid-to-late rounders, as well as some UDFAs. Every now and then you get a 2nd round pick from this game, but the Shrine is mostly guys for later on.

You can find some good players. Earl Wolff played in the game last year. Brent Celek played in the Shrine Game. So did Correll Buckhalter. I’m sure I’m leaving out plenty of guys, but that gives you an idea that you can find talent. So let’s talk about some players to keep an eye on.

CB Pierre Desir – Lindenwood – 6-1, 197 … Big guy from a small school. The Eagles need depth at CB. Desir could be somebody worth developing.  Dominated his level of competition.

DE Ethan Westbrooks – West Texas A&M – 6-4, 263 … Athletic edge rusher who could be an OLB in the Eagles system. Has the kind of frame the Eagles like.

S Tre Boston – North Carolina – 6-0, 198 … Started for 3 1/2 years. Played both CB and S. Has okay size. Might be a good mid-to-late round pick to challenge for a backup spot. Finished his career with 12 picks.

S Hakeem Smith – Louisville – 6-0, 186 … 4-year starter. A bit thin, but had 17 career TFLs. That tells you that he’s not afraid to play near the LOS and can be disruptive in the box. Only had 4 career INTs.

WR Matt Hazel – Coastal Carolina – 6-1, 196 … Small school player, but has solid size. Had a good week of practice and showed he’s a legit NFL prospect.

WR Jeremy Gallon – Michigan – 5-7, 183 … Will the Eagles have any interest in a small WR? Kelly had some success with smaller guys at Oregon. Gallon was incredibly productive for Michigan this year. Size is a concern, but I think you’re doing a disservice if you dismiss this kid purely because of that.

DE Larry Webster – Bloomsburg – 6-6, 249 … Former basketball player turned into D2 pass rushing star. The Eagles could see him as an OLB to develop. Needs time and coaching.

DT Zach Kerr – Delaware – 6-2, 334 … Big, but athletic. If the Eagles want a NT to develop behind Bennie Logan, Kerr could be of interest.

DT Justin Ellis – Louisiana Tech – 6-2, 351 … Ellis is bigger than Kerr, but also athletic. Just received a late invitation to the Senior Bowl so watch him today and then I’ll see him this week in Mobile. Could be the kind of talented kid that Jerry Azzinaro can turn into a solid NFL player.

Obviously the Eagles will be interested in anyone who plays well. I didn’t cover the QBs or OL, but you know the Eagles will be checking them out.

One player I don’t think the Eagles will like is Will Clarke from West Va. He’s 6-6, 277. DE. Gets down in a track stance. Looks perfect for the Wide-9, but doesn’t look like a LB and sure doesn’t seem like a guy you’d bulk up to 2-gap. Clarke is one of the more talented guys in the game, but I don’t think the Eagles will be interested in him.

Senior Bowl and that made him a 1st rounder

I really like the potential of Jordan Narvaj TE from Baylor. He is 6-6 265 and originally committed to Stanford

Interesting prospect. Good potential. He’ll be helped by the lack of a strong TE class.

Love the size and could be a good mid round prospect to learn from Ertz and Celek

I know the odds of us taking a QB high is slim unless a very talented guy falls, but I could really see Jimmy Garoppolo been a great QB for us. Sadly if we want him, it have to be with the 2nd round pick and he might not even last that long with a great Senior Bowl.

Agree that he’d fit well in Kelly’s offense. If he does last to the 3rd, Eagles could take him. Chances are someone takes him way before that.

living in Myrtle, watched Hazel live twice. just a ton to like about him. has good enough speed-not a burner, nice hands, runs good routes, doesnt shy from contact, and knows what to do with the ball when given space. plus, high character and hard worker-this from ccu write-ups, but he did turndown georgia after giving ccu a verbal, is some evidence, just not spin. i’m hoping eagles draft 2 WRs, top 8-10 guy early, and another late. wouldnt mind at all hearing Hazel called in 7th.

Only defenders to stand out has been the pass rushers

Not about the Shrine Game, but I'm jumping on whatever bandwagon there is for CB Terrance Mitchell – almost done charting and great numbers— Greg Peshek (@NU_Gap) 18. januar 2014

Potential target in the draft. Got great size at 6-1 189 and he had 5 ints this year playing the left side (QBs right and often the toughest side to play) for Oregon (so he can tackle).

  20. 20 TommyLawlor said at 6:08 PM on January 18th, 2014:

DT Justin Ellis just put a beautiful spin move on the G and almost sacked the QB. That is a big man that can move.

  21. 21 Patrick said at 6:12 PM on January 18th, 2014:

After seeing Bennie Logan and the rest of our DL being pushed like children against the Saints, I like the sound of a 350 pound NT and you’re telling me that you’re impressed with his athleticism? I was on the Boykin wagon since you first mentioned him, now i’m thinking about jumping on that Justin Ellis wagon.

Hey Tommy, who do you like better lamarcus Joyner or Calvin Pryor . can eagles grab either of them in 2nd round or will the need for good safeties around the league cause them to be drafted in late first and early second?

I hope you’ll do a short wrapup on the shrine game, and what you saw from the players you listed and those you did not.

How about that kid Cockrell from Duke?

Late interception and displayed great hands for a defensive back.

I know it’s a bit early for Senior Bowl prospects, but I already have a man crush on Stanley Jean Baptiste from Nebraska. I’d love to hear Tommy’s thoughts on this guy after he does some research on this kid. Most ppl have him going 4/5th round right now but if he runs a sub 4.5 at the combine, then watch out…

  26. 26 Mitchell said at 8:32 PM on January 18th, 2014:

How did Tre Boston play in the shrine game. I thought he was at 6’1″ and I’ll be disappointed if he isn’t come combine.

  27. 27 D3FB said at 10:33 PM on January 18th, 2014:

He measured in at 5115 at the Shrine Bowl.

  28. 28 Mitchell said at 11:42 PM on January 18th, 2014:

wow, are you serious. that’s a bit too short and makes his value drop significantly. O well on to my next possible man-crush.

  29. 29 D3FB said at 12:13 AM on January 19th, 2014:

Found you a new man crush. Poor man’s Justin Gilbert. Travis Carrie CB for Ohio. Similar disinterest in the run game as Gilbert but as a priority UDFA I feel alot more comfortable with those issues.

  30. 30 Mitchell said at 2:14 AM on January 19th, 2014:

First thing is he looks bigger than 6′. I saw one sight that had him listed at 5’11.5″. Looks super fluid with his hips and that int he made was fantastic. Unfortunately he allowed 2 deep tds. As far as run support goes, he definitely could be more aggressive but he has the body to be a good run defender. I saw he speed listed in the low 4.4’s which is pretty sick for how big he is. A definite project but I would gamble on him for sure if he is around for UDFA. Idk if someone does gamble on him late in the draft just because of his physical attributes. Not to mention he can return.

  31. 31 D3FB said at 2:38 AM on January 19th, 2014:

Figured you’d like him. I was in the middle of the film and went wait he reminds me of somebody, and then it hit me and i came straight here, haha. I was impressed how quickly his feet move in his pedal. He was in press man but not contacting, however that looked more like a coaching/scheme thing, but turns to run well. The one TD it looked like he had a good chance to undercut it but the turf monster tackled him. There are going to be a handful of intriguing UDFA corner types with nice size and speed that may end up getting drafted. Alot of teams want to try to move to a bigger secondary, especially with corners who are big and fast enough to play man. Therefore its going to be tough trying to place a hard and fast value on some of them (Phillip Gaines, Bene Benweikere, Shaq Richardson). He can return but he had a couple of iffy ones on the film. As far as size for the CBs I think anything over 5’11.5 will serve especially if they have longer arms.

  32. 32 Mitchell said at 2:46 AM on January 19th, 2014:

Totally agree on the one td, when I watched the replay it looked like he could have definitely int’ed it at least broke it up. And yeh, at least as a good backup for sure.
