Playoff Talk

The Eagles are 9-5 and in 7th place in the NFC. The top 6 spots go to playoff teams. With some help, the Eagles can get in the playoffs. Heck, if Dallas loses to Indy or the Skins, the Eagles can still win the division by winning their final 2 games. This isn’t like some crazy 2008 scenario where the Eagles needed multiple things to happen on the final day to squeeze in. I still remember my buddy Matt talking me off the ledge that day as some of the games were back and forth. When the dust settled, the Eagles were in the playoffs and they came close to making the Super Bowl.

Some people question whether the Eagles should even want to make the playoffs. This certainly doesn’t look like a Super Bowl team. Why not get a better draft pick?

Last year the Cardinals went 10-6 and missed the playoffs. They had the #20 pick (and traded it). The Eagles won the NFC East and had the #22 pick (and traded it). The Eagles aren’t going to have a high pick no matter what. The team is 9-5. They would have the #20 pick if the season ended today. Dallas is at #25. Even if the Eagles go 9-7, the pick is still going to be in the 18-20 range. There is no “Tank for Mariota” possibility.

I believe there is always value in making the playoffs. First, you never know when the matchups are going to break right for you and you can win a game or two. You don’t have to be 13-3 to have success in the postseason. I’ll always ask for a playoff berth and then hope for some playoff magic.

I think there is also value to getting players playoff experience. Rarely does a team win the Super Bowl in their first playoff trip in an extended period. Last year was Seattle’s third trip in 4 years. The 2012 Ravens won the SB in their 5th straight year in the playoffs. The 2010 Packers won in their third trip in 4 years. There is no guarantee that making the playoffs will lead to postseason success in the future, but it certainly doesn’t seem to hurt.

Playoff football is different that regular season football. I think it is important for coaches and players to experience as much of that as possible. Just because the Eagles don’t seem likely to win the SB this year doesn’t mean there’s no value to being in the playoffs.

I think playoff trips help with culture building. It gives the coaches beliefs more validity to people, both on the inside and outside. There are some critics once again talking about Chip Kelly’s ideas and how they fit in the NFL. He’s on the verge of going to the playoffs for the second time in 2 years. Let me put that in perspective. Jeff Fisher, Mr. NFL, has made the playoffs twice in the past 12 years. The more success Kelly has, the more people will buy into his ideas.

I also think the playoffs are just fun. Yeah, it sucked losing to the Saints last year, but would you rather feel that or be a Buffalo fan who hasn’t made the playoffs since 1999. Detroit has only made it once since 1999. Skins fans have only watched their team in the playoffs 4 times in the last 22 years. The Eagles were in the playoffs 4 of the previous 6 seasons and might make it again this year.

Making the playoffs is no substitute for winning the Super Bowl, but those scenarios work hand-in-hand, not opposed to each other. This isn’t like I’m a college basketball fan bragging about NIT titles. The first step to getting to the Super Bowl is making the playoffs. I know some of you could argue that there is a benefit to bottoming out and getting a high pick. The Eagles did that in 2012 and got Lane Johnson for their troubles. This team has a lot of key pieces in place. The problems that do exist don’t have to be solved by high picks. I’d love for the Eagles to have a true, unquestioned franchise QB, but just because you draft high doesn’t mean you’ll get one. See Mark Sanchez for example 1.

This Eagles team is flawed, but I hope they still make the playoffs. You never know what will happen in January and that’s what makes it so fun.

    Not the 20th?

  4. 4 Weapon Y said at 3:53 PM on December 16th, 2014:

“There is no Tank for Mariota possibility.” I’m not so sure about that. Sure, they can’t get him wherever their pick will be, but I think there is a chance Chip goes all in for Mariota. He did draft or intend to draft other Oregon players much higher than expected. Huff in Round 3. He wanted Hart in Round 3 as well. My point is there is a precedent of Chip rating his old Oregon players much higher than other coaches. I wonder if he has Mariota rated so high that he’ll do whatever it takes to get him. A lower pick might mean it is slightly cheaper to trade up. That might be all the difference it takes.

With that said, I personally am never in favor of tanking. But there is some upside if trading up for Mariota is a real possibility.

  8. 8 TommyLawlor said at 4:10 PM on December 16th, 2014:

There is no way the Eagles will be able to trade up from #18 or 20 to get the top pick. Too many teams in between would want him. Top team wouldn’t have to move that far down in a trade and would still get a good price for him.

  9. 9 Henly125 said at 4:34 PM on December 16th, 2014:

True, but not many of those teams that need a QB have a Shady McCoy to use as a trading piece.. After what Chip did to DeSean, without getting anything in return, it’s hard to rule anything out. Who’s to say this guy wouldn’t do it for the most important position in sports? Weapon Y made the point that Chip nearly reached for Taylor Hart in the 3rd round, which is true. Josh Huff was considered a reach as well. I would prefer we use the picks to fill holes on the team anyway, but I don’t know what Chip thinks and I’m not into hypotheticals myself, but it can’t be ruled out.

  10. 10 D3FB said at 4:56 PM on December 16th, 2014:

Shady is averaging 4.1 ypc this season. He’s due to be paid $9.75mil in base salary next year. He’s coming off two extremely heavy workload seasons. Shady isn’t worth much as a trade piece. He probably nets you a 4th, maybe a 3rd. That isn’t in anyway going to get your close to Mariotta or be any kind of influence in jumping over teams with better draft spots.

  11. 11 Henly125 said at 5:09 PM on December 16th, 2014:

Only $1 million of that $9.75mil is guaranteed. Im having a hard time agreeing with you on the workload seasons, yes he’s had a lot of touches, but he’s only 26 years old…. Nowhere near passed his prime.. Sooo, I’d say any ELITE running back at that age is worth the $9.75 million base salary. No way is Shady worth a 3rd or a 4th round pick, that’s blasphemy.

  12. 12 D3FB said at 5:16 PM on December 16th, 2014:

Base salary means if he is on a team, he will be paid that. Running backs are being devalued in the modern NFL. Teams aren’t going to give up top 75 picks for a back with a huge price tag and 6 years in the league. He will have gone over 300 carries the last two years alone. He has the second most carries in the league this year. I’m sorry, you’re wrong. The league will not value him at the price you think they will. Running backs are being drafted later and later each year, they are being paid significantly less in free agency. The league does not put a premium on the running back position anymore.

  13. 13 Henly125 said at 5:39 PM on December 16th, 2014:

You’re right, the position is devalued in recent years, but this is LeSean McCoy we’re talking about here, an established All-Pro running Back at 26 years of age. Put the base salary and positional value aside for a second, you mean to tell me there isn’t a team that would give up higher than a 3rd or 4th round pick for this guy? You’re absolutely wrong, bro.. he is on pace for a another heavy workload season, but he’s very much the same player we saw last year. His running style plays into this as well, he’s not a physically daunting runner. You’re opinion is based on running backs throughout the league not named LeSean mcCoy. Look around at the top RB salaries and they’re all getting paid in the $9mil – $11 range.

  14. 14 D3FB said at 5:49 PM on December 16th, 2014:

    No they aren’t

    http://overthecap.com/position/running-back

  15. 15 Henly125 said at 5:56 PM on December 16th, 2014:

Interesting link.. But Jamaal Charles is making $8.3mil this season due to that contract extension. I believe it’ll be higher next season too, he’s the second highest paid RB now.

  16. 16 D3FB said at 5:54 PM on December 16th, 2014:

Melvin Gordon can be taken at the back end of round 1 on a contract that will pay him less in 4 years than Shady makes next year. Why would a team trade that?

Ameer Abdullah is going to be taken early in round two for a contract that over its life will be less than half what Shady makes next year.

Duke Johnson is going to go late 2nd or 3rd. He will make peanuts.

Also you’re right about Shady’s running style. It doesn’t fit with alot of teams. So now you can decrease demand. Add in the high salary, decrease demand. Alot of teams are wary about high workloads, decrease demand. Demarco Murray and Beastmode and probably Adrian will all be free agents. You have to give up no picks for them. They will probably sign for less money than 10 million next season.

You’re probably looking at maybe 2 or 3 teams that would be interested. He’s not this shining golden ticket you perceive him to be.

  17. 17 Henly125 said at 6:13 PM on December 16th, 2014:

He may not be a golden ticket,, but he does add more value when trying to trade up in the draft. That was the whole point of my statement. Shady adds value. Period. Never said we’d only have to trade him alone to move up and draft a QB. What I mean is shady is a trading piece that could sweeten the pot for a potential draft trade. It is highly unlikely that we move up, but throwing Shady in there certainly raises chances. You’re points are completely valid, however there should be no doubt that Shady has the value to sweeten up a deal to pull off a trade.

  18. 18 D3FB said at 6:35 PM on December 16th, 2014:

And my point is that he doesn’t sweeten the pot nearly enough. What I’m saying is he’s the equivalent of throwing in an extra third or fourth round pick. Shady simply doesn’t move the needle on any kind of perspective trade up to be meaningful. If a team drafting 4th or 5th offers an RG3 deal there’s not enough draft picks or players in the world.

  19. 19 philliesfan123 said at 9:23 PM on December 17th, 2014:

Remember Jimmy Johnson ( Dallas coach ) traded Hershel Walker for draft picks to rebuild the Cowboys. I’m not going to compare the potential trade value possibilities, but trading shady would give the Eagles much needed draft picks to rebuild their secondary, etc.

  20. 20 philliesfan123 said at 9:20 PM on December 17th, 2014:

Lynch is under contract next year, and Demarco Murray is going NO WHERE ! Peterson is under contract until 2017, and Zimmerman wants him back.

  21. 21 philliesfan123 said at 9:14 PM on December 17th, 2014:

Don’t discount that a lot have teams need to put butts in their seats and want to create a buzz for their fans to be excited about. Shady going to another team, would pump up their fans. It’s football ….. but in the end it’s entertainment.

  22. 22 D3FB said at 12:42 AM on December 18th, 2014:

Teams don’t get shit in revenue from gate reciepts. Even the worst teams are consistently at 85%+ capacity.

A bad team would be ill suited trading a high pick for a player that will be over the hill once they reach relevancy again.

Shady is not worth a premium pick.

  23. 23 philliesfan123 said at 9:11 PM on December 17th, 2014:

Agree …. 2nd rounder. Only 26 yrs. old, 2013 rushing title, off year and still is 4th in NFL.

  24. 24 Weapon Y said at 7:56 PM on December 16th, 2014:

It is unlikely and I would guess it won’t happen. But I would not rule it out. This wouldn’t be the first time Chip did something unexpected at the QB position (bring back Vick, not trade Foles, draft Barkley, sign Sanchez). It would just dwarf all of those moves in shock value.

  25. 25 DarthBanner said at 3:54 PM on December 16th, 2014:

    b) Man, I am not generally a jealous person, but man, look at the bloody Patrtiots, who just won their division for the 11th (!!!) time in the last 12 years. #BradyEnvy

Getting to the playoffs and winning a game would be a nice tangible step forward from last year. Doesn’t actually mean anything as far as if we are actually getting any better, but it helps the fans or validates the players’ hard work to get better year to year, its worth it. Always is discouraging when better input doesn’t yield better output.

  51. 51 Midnight_Greenville said at 4:19 PM on December 16th, 2014:

I think we are unquestionably better than last year, regardless of whether we make/win a playoff game. We will likely surpass last year’s record, despite playing a harder schedule, playing the bulk of best teams on our schedule all on the road, despite massive injuries to the O-line, despite playing with our back-up QB for 1/2 the year. Give Chip another year to build with a few improved players and experience for the ones on the roster and I expect continued improvement next year as well.

  52. 52 Ark87 said at 4:34 PM on December 16th, 2014:

I agree, but something tangible is always nice too. Kudos on the Nike of Samothrace for you avatar, some cultured stuff right there. My personal favorite statue, every time I start thinking about how far we’ve come since ancient times, that statue humbles me haha.

Definitely would be beneficial to have a playoff win to solidify the perception of improvement. I have a soft spot in my heart for “Winged Victory.” I’m hoping for 5 (or maybe 6) more of them this year.

  54. 54 Media Mike said at 7:36 PM on December 16th, 2014:

That all works except for throwing away our division title. No team in the NFC East other than the Eagles should win this division. Dallas even being close, let alone leading us in division, is patently unacceptable.

  55. 55 Media Mike said at 7:34 PM on December 16th, 2014:

This is the exact reason for my rage at choking away the Dallas game. My “par” finish for the season was 11-5, a division title, and a win of a home playoff game before losing in the division round on the road.

  56. 56 philliesfan123 said at 9:28 PM on December 17th, 2014:

  57. 57 Midnight_Greenville said at 4:15 PM on December 16th, 2014:

It is so about matchups in the playoffs, and even though you can’t predict how things will shake out, there are possible scenarios (whether we win the division of make a wild card spot) of playing some teams we matchup fairly well against, like Dallas, or Arizona. I’d also love to see a rematch against Seattle, even if it’s in their building, just to see how the coaches and players respond to the last game. If we get Foles back and the right matchup you never know what will happen. So, bottom line is: Playoffs, please.

Last season, we won what? 10 games, behind the top run game, and the best OL in the history of this franchise, and a QB having a ridiculous 27-2 year?..
This year we will have been hit with ever bit of adversity imaginable, played against a much tougher schedule, horrendous injury luck, 13 different OL combinations, and we still might win 11 friggin games, which is more than last years Dream year against an easier schedule..

The only team that can claim to be as tough and well coached as us is the arizona Cardinals… Everyone else favorite teams are a bunch of front running frauds, Denver WOULDNT be anything without Peyton, they would forfeit the season just about if he got hurt lol.. The great Greenbay Packers have proven to be nothing without 1 man (QB Aaron Rogers), Seattle WOULDNT do anything without Russel Wilson….

Even really really good teams in this league are NOTHING when they lose their QB. Our coaches had to spend the year putting out more fires than Danny Watkins… Chip Kelly’s Eagles, and Bruce Arians cardinals, were the only two teams that no matter who got injured, how many players got injured, the coaching, Charecter and toughness of those football teams was still going to shine thru…. I’d put the Patriots in that category because I seen them compete without BRady in the past… All the other great coaches and top teams are just as good as their starting QB

This year is turning out to be a heartbreaker, but it’s ridiculous to see this soft FANBASE over react, and rip our coaches… You spoiled bitches should be appreciative that elite coaches could keep it together in a year we almost experienced as much bad luck as the 4-12 year

It’s killing me that we aren’t going to see FOles again this year… All the adversity we were going thru all year was ok, because everything was set up perfectly for FOles to get his heally line back for the final stretch of games.,to not see Nick, and him not get the much needed game time is like a giant gloomy cloud following me since the new from the Doctor yesterday.
    ..
As down as I am, Tom is right tho, there is always value in making the playoffs. Plus, as football junkies let’s not pretend we wouldn’t give our arm for one more game before the season end and we have to wait out a long offseason..
    ..
There is a lot to still play for, and some interesting things to see, like Brandon Graham starting in place of COLE and playing extended snaps,
    ,,
I can’t help wishing that we could see Barkley these last two games. I don’t have much belief in him, but I also don’t know what we have, and I wouldn’t mind seeing what he can do towards the end of year two with the starters…but until we are eliminated chip can’t do that to the locker room, he has to play who gives them their best chance to win…
    ..
Frustrating because good game or bad game, we pretty much know what sanchez is…not a starting QB, but caoable of being a top backüp, who can keep you above water shot term if your QB gets hurt… We are down on sanchez because he isn’t playing well and expect more from the veteran, and even tho I don’t have any faith in him more than being a quality backüp, he is capable of much better play then how he is performing lately,. He is better tha sundays performance…it really hurts to watch the replay these past two weeks and see how many wide open guys he didn’t see open..
    ..
I have pretty much no faith in Barkley, but I would love to turn it over to him these last two games against beatable competition… If he could pull off these last two wins, his value would be raised a bit, and we can sit him back on the bench where he can’t do ANYTHNG to lose any value lol

Watching sanchez the rest of the way, someone we know ISNT THE answer, just doesn’t excite me. But for the young defenders and proud veterans busting their ass playing thru injuries all year I hope these men are rewarded with playoffs…they overcame so much, they deserve it…even tho I’m disgusted by the letdowns sunday. Don’t mind losing, but I can’t stand not playing Up to our ability, beating ourselves

This is all predicated on the Eagles winning. The Packers game will not be meaningless no matter what because the Pack cannot tie Detroit, they have to be a game ahead.

Why do you think the Bills gave us a relatively high pick for Bryce Brown, when they already had good RBs? Or why Bengals using a second rounder for Jeremy Hill, when they have Gio Bernard?

Have you ever looked at what happens to teams that don’t have good running games? If the playoffs were to happen today, I think the trio of Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, and Indianapolis Colts, the only probable playoff teams with bad rushing attacks, are likely to be bounced relatively quickly, for reasons that do have a lot to do with not having a good rushing attack.

This is one of those things where people talk themselves into believing bullshit. A bad rushing attack is usually very bad for your team. Talking about how RBs are devalued is a good way of cheating RBs of their due compensation for allowing their bodies to get so beat up so quickly, even for football.

Uses one hand to carry the ball, and the other hand to stiff arm you, fight defenders off him so he can pick up a few extra yards. If he can’t use his other hand to fight backs off him, those 700 yards he has racked up after initial contact won’t mean much Against the Colts… Plus you know the colts will he trying to hold him up, with Daqwell Jaclson trying to rip the ball free…

He also becomes a liability in pass protection.. Still, how is Everyone viewing this situation? Do we want Demarco to play? Or Do we hope he is foolish enough to risk playing such an important game with one arm?

The rush wasn’t there the safety wasn’t there, there was little or no contact with Bryant at LOS, and Romo was dead on. This team has a lot of key pieces in place. The problems that do exist don’t have to be solved by high picks. I’d love for the Eagles to have a true, unquestioned franchise QB, but just because you draft high doesn’t mean you’ll get one. See Mark Sanchez for example 1. […]

Doesn’t matter what Dallas or Saints do if the Eagles don’t take care of their own business….

I could be wrong , but if the Eagles would have picked 2 picks sooner last year they could / would have drafted Ha Ha Clinton Dix. I would say that would have made a HUGE difference to this team. Especially because they panicked and took Marcus Smith III. Also missing the playoffs doesn’t change your pick by 1 or 2 places in the draft. The Eagles moved down 6 places in the draft last year, just by making it to the playoffs.

Also how can you compare what the Eagles did with what the Cardinals did ? Arizona moved down, and then drafted a ( good ) player, who has been having a impact on his team this year. The Eagles moved down ( because all the players that they coveted ) were already gone ….. not because it doesn’t matter if you pick at # 22 or # 26.

How can Tommy say that it’s no big deal ? If the Eagles would have lost to Dallas last year in that final game, instead of winning and going to the playoffs, they would have picked @ # 16 in the draft ( Dallas’s spot. ) That would have made a HUGE difference. They could have easily moved up 1 or 2 spots and drafted OLB – Ryan Shazier or CB – Kyle Fuller. Or they could have stayed put and drafted C. J Mosley, Calvin Pryor, Brandon Cooks or Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Tell me that wouldn’t have been a much, much better draft.
