Day 2 Review
Posted: May 2nd, 2015 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 276 Comments »Nelson Agholor gave the offense the key weapon they were missing on Thursday. Friday night the focus shifted over to the defense.
2nd Round – CB Eric Rowe – Utah
3rd Round – ILB Jordan Hicks – Texas
The Eagles added a pair of athletic players to the defense. That’s a good thing in my book.
Rowe played both S and CB at Utah. Chip Kelly referred to him as having the kind of size and length the Eagles like in press corners to I’m assuming that is where they will pay him first.
You will have Byron Maxwell at one corner spot. Rowe and Walter Thurmond will battle for the other spot. You have Brandon Boykin in the slot and Nolan Carroll still around for depth. CB looks a lot better than it did in late December. We still need to see these guys play, but it is at least encouraging.
I couldn’t be happier with the move the Eagles made at CB. Rowe is a player I liked quite a bit due to his combination of size, skills, athleticism and instincts. Rowe can be a very tough press corner, but he’s also got the ability to play off and be effective. Some big CBs develop bad habits in college and are used to making contact with WRs all over the field. There is no illegal contact penalty in college.
Rowe is one of the few guys that looks comfortable jamming his guy, running with his guy or even backing off and reading the play. He seems natural in zone coverage. Rowe started at Safety for 3 years and is used to being away from receivers and reading plays. He has excellent awareness and is involved in a play if the ball is anywhere near him.
I like his physicality. Rowe will hit and tackle. He will fight to get off blocks so he can get to the runner or receiver. He is an active, aggressive defender.
Rowe should challenge for a starting spot right away. He is still learning how to play CB, but was a 4-year starter in college. He learns quickly and has the physical traits you want in a starting corner. He seems to have a real competitive streak. Also, he’s an ideal fit for the Eagles scheme.
Great pick.
* * * * *
Jordan Hicks isn’t popular with some Eagles fans. I think we need to separate a couple of things…Hicks the player vs what is going on at ILB. Let’s start with the ILB situation. We now have:
ILB – Mychal Kendricks … Jordan Hicks …… Brad Jones ….. Emmanuel Acho
ILB – Kiko Alonso …………. DeMeco Ryans … Najee Goode …. Brandon Hepburn
That is a ton of ILBs. It would make sense for the Eagles to deal someone. Chip Kelly said the team isn’t shopping Kendricks and hasn’t gotten any calls inquiring about him. We’ll see about that.
The Eagles don’t hate Kendricks. They don’t think he’s a bad player. The problem is that they don’t seem committed to him long term. Chip Kelly prefers bigger players. I don’t know if Kelly has questions about Kendricks’ personality or leadership skills or anything else. I just know that Kelly isn’t as enamored with Kendricks as most of us are. If you don’t believe in a guy long term, why not deal him now and move on?
You can also think of Hicks as an investment in the future. Kendricks could leave as a free agent after this year. Ryans is getting older. Hicks could sit for a year and then take over a starting role.
With that in mind, and with Ryans and Alonso each coming off injuries, the Eagles decided they wanted an ILB. They looked all over in the pre-draft process. This wasn’t casual. They focused on this position.
Hicks is a good ILB prospect. He is 6-1, 236. That is a good frame for a rookie ILB. He shows a complete skill set. Hicks is a good run defender. He can take on OL and shed blocks. He tackles well on inside runs. Hicks has the speed to chase RBs out wide and still make the play. He takes good angles when pursuing.
The Eagles see Hicks as a 3-down LB. They feel he can blitz and cover. He looks comfortable in zone coverage. Hicks is a good enough athlete to handle most RBs and TEs.
One of the things I like most about Hicks is his tackling. He isn’t shy at all. He will attack the ball when it is in front of him. Hicks has pop when he hits, but still tries to wrap-up as much as he can. Some LBs like to hit more than tackle. Hicks will wrap and put his targets down forcefully. That’s what you want from a LB.
Hicks isn’t great in any way, but has the potential to be a good starting ILB in the NFL.
The biggest issue with him is durability. Hicks missed most of 2013 with an injury. He missed most of 2012 due to a hip injury. When he stays healthy and plays, Hicks is outstanding.
* * * * *
If you want to look at things simplistically, the Eagles are better on offense and defense, and still have more picks left. There are still needs to address, but the Eagles won’t handle them all. No team ever really does. The key to having a good draft is acquiring talent. So far the Eagles have done a terrific job of that.

Anyone know exactly what the deal is with Clemmings falling down the board? Is he going to be out for a year or something?
The stress fracture has to be in a particularly unfortunate spot. Or he’s got a degenerative joint problem somewhere else that hasn’t become public knowledge yet.
So sad to hear. So much potential if healthy.
According to Mark Eckel, via Clemmings’ agent, it’s an injury from a few years ago that calcified, and is not causing any pain: http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2015/05/2015_nfl_draft_agent_says_teanecks_tj_clemmings_wi.html. Strange, if true.
People need to stop rationalizing it over the fact that he feels no pain, that doesn’t mean shit when it comes to stress fractures. It’s not at all uncommon for a player to not feel pain due to stress fractures, often the players don’t even know anything is wrong….but if they don’t get it taken care of you can bet they will eventually feel the pain..
.
We are quoting NJ,com now? Lol that’s like quoting Barnum and Baily circus lol… 😉
I don’t think anyone knows the whole story yet. Very interesting situation.
And here I was, worrying that he wouldn’t be available at #20. It’s amazing how things can change in a matter of days. Would still love to get him even if he has to miss significant time this year.
Tommy, I respectfully disagree. I hate hate hate the Jordan Hicks pick. Probably more than how much Jimmy Bama hates Miles Austin. I watched Hicks against Baylor and Oklahoma. He was awful. He missed more tackles than Brian Rolle, Jamar Chaney, Casey Matthews, or Moise Fokou. He got moved around by o-linemen, manipulated by the QBs eye fakes and left passing lanes open, and ran into the wrong gaps. This was an awful use of resources.
Frankly if you don’t like what you see against Oklahoma, I’m not sure what more to say other than that tape is objectively good.
You can argue about use of resources, but there wasn’t an OL worth taking. The safeties are all kind of personal preference, there’s no great WR that we had to have, clearly they don’t love the QBs. I mean would Carl Davis or Henry Anderson really have been any better as far as use of resources? NO.
How about a player that doesn’t suck? I don’t care what position. Show me the tape of a good LB and I’d gladly choose him.
It seems you know it all… why don’t you offer a tape of a talented 3rd round prospect for comparison,
reminder: they need to fit the eagles.
Well, there was 1 WR. I have been putting my Coates on for several months but today I had to take it off. 🙁
You should have known we wouldn’t be interested in Coates in May. You should have been looking for the next Cecil Shorts or the next BJ Haltertop.
First of all, Hicks isn’t sacking everyone, picking off QBs, or knocking people out. #notdawkinssohesucks
You don’t think Clemmings was worthy to take in the third?
No one has taken him yet so apparently they can wait…for now
I would have but apparently this injury really has teams freaked out.
OMG!
He did all those things?
Do you think Chip and Ed and Billy Davis watched tape at all? Do you think they noticed that he made the worst play possible on every down?
Why did we make this pick? How can you draft a guy without watching the tape?
Yeah, because coaches always get picks right 100% of the time! That’s why Marcus Smith is an All-Pro, right? That’s why Danny Watkins is going to the fucking Hall of Fame. Your argument is stupid.
An argument about MSII being a bad pick after 1 year is ignorant as well.
Well the fact of the matter is we gotta see them play. A lot of people who weren’t great in college developed into great players. At the same time a lot of people who were good in college sucked as pro’s cause they didn’t develop properly. We found out Danny Watkins sucked cause he didn’t develop and we saw it in his play. We haven’t seen Marcus Smith play. Give him a chance bro.
Weapon Y, posts like this are the reason why the great posters decide to be less involved.
I know, I miss Morton too.
I don’t believe the problem with Kendricks is size any more than I do with Boykin. 2 inches of height is not the issue.
I think they want more patience at ILB. More diagnose then attack instead of Kendricks who just attacks. When Kendricks is right he makes big plays but when he misreads his snap-decisions its a huge whiff. Watch Alonso, Hicks, And Ryans and you will see how patient they are at reading the play. I love what Kendricks does and I think he is a star. I just think that the coaches want a bit more restraint.
Wish he was a little bigger…with his blitzing ability, I wouldn’t mind seeing him at OLB
Tommy, glad you mentioned his tackling. I was impressed by the way he would drive guys into the ground if he caught them clean. I see a little Dawk in him with his move to drive the opponent to the ground. Looks like he bursts at the last moment, his feet come of the ground and uses every once of his body to punish the opponent into the ground. Like wrestling leverage take downs. Clean, yet punishing.
Anyone remember that guy who said he knew the Eagles first pick and put it in an evelope to open up on draft day..? Was wondering if his pick was right.. Hicks sounds like a replacement for Ryans.. Digging the smarts
Brandt? Yea, dude nailed it.
Ooh for real.. Impressive!
So did IKe Reese, big deal.. They eagles drafted the #4 ranked WR, not the biggest Shocker if you ask me…
As Baloophi or AcViking had alluded to, you just have to make about thirty of those envelopes and throw away the ones that don’t work out.
Hicks has good size but Kendricks doesn’t? Is it that whopping 2 inches? This looks like filling out their depth as possible ST replacements for Goode/Acho and longer term development behind Kendricks/Mecco, both who missed games last year with injuries. Neither really impressed when pressed into duty or previously (Goode/Acho).
Even if he sticks around this year as Chip says, Its hard to see the team dishing out the huge contract that he will demand on the open market when they have to consider Cox and possibly Bradford in the near future. I think an Alonso-Hicks Tandem is the 2-3 year plan most likely.
I’m ok with Hicks the player. He seems like a decent enough prospect with enough upside that he could be an above average starting ILB in the pros. My question though is, what is the plan to improve the talent on the Oline. I’m Not completely sold on Barbre as the starting RG. Mathis is getting way up there in years, peters isn’t a spring chicken either, and we have absolutely no quality depth at all should someone get injured. Are we really going to go into the year with a 4th or 6th round pick as our only oline addition this year. I for sure thought we’d use the 3-5 rounds to restock some of the oline depth.
With the OL I think people need to consider that all of the players the eagles may have targeted were gone. There was a big run on OL to start the 3rd roudn and we may have missed out. There is a good chance Clemmings and L Collins are both off of our board. The eagles chose not to reach like some of the other teams did and took a player they had rated highly.
Really thought we’d use the 3-5 rounds to restock the oline depth with more talent. Are we really going to go into this year with an injury prone QB and two injury prone backs with a 4th or 6th round pick as the only addition to our oline. I’m not sold on Barbre just yet as the starting RG. Mathis is 34, Peters is 33. We’ve got the oldest projected starting Oline in the league and nothing that makes me feel comfortable as far as backups are concerned. Can’t help but think this is super risky.
By the way, I said the same thing last year and everyone told me how stupid I was being and that we’d have the best oline in football. Tell me nobody here forgets watching Kelly-Molk-Tobin last year and actually feels comfortable that they remain the top backups.
Exactly…I said the same thing last year as well and most scoffed at me too…dominating at the OL and DL helps win games and rings…our OL has gotten worse, our depth failed last year and we have done zero to address it…I’m not sure what Chip is doing
When multiple guys go down at the same time it destroys cohesion on the offensive line and individual guys look worse than they are. I personally think the reserve OL on the team are underrated.
Matt Tobin looked great in the preseason last year. He then suffered a bad high ankle sprain and he was still struggling with that even when he was playing. Once they stuck Andrew Gardner at RG and has with other starters at the end of the season, he played well. PFF is hit and miss IMO but he graded out well in their rankings. Kevin Graf impressed me in preseason last year and I think he has a chance at emerging. I’m most concerned with the reserves at C. Vandervelde is constantly injured and Molk gets blown up in both pass protection and in the running game. Max Garcia is a guy I wouldn’t mind taking at all in the 4th. Some have him as more of a 5th or 6th but I saw that some teams have him ranked as the #1 C. He’s 6-4, 309 and is fully capable of playing guard too.
Molk can’t even be allowed at training camp. He is horrible unless he gained 20lbs of muscle
They did have 9 different line combinations this past season. With that much turnover/change, I’d doubt any team’s oline would look good.
Really we are even alot weaker then last year even. Everyone is a year older and we are less with depth due to Herremans being cut.
Injury prone QB
Old OL, possibly injury prone C?
Injury prone RB
Injured ILB
Another injured ILB
rookie injury prone ILB
but hey, smoothies!
This draft has really reminded me how little respect I have for most draft analysis. The same guys who had Collins, Collins, Fisher, Clemmings, and more in the first round are going to turn around and tell us who got “value” and who “reached”.
Don’t forget Strong. He was tabbed as a Top 20 pick
Exactly. I’m fine with mocks as opinion pieces, and they help me learn about college players. But it’s seeing these writers churning out first round grades that gets me.
What’s worse is when ignorant fans Booo our decision makers or the kid we draft, because the Predraft expectations worthless hack media put in their heads…
…
Like how the hell do you automatically believe that Kiper knows better then our coaches and personnel department whether hicks is a good 3rd round pick or a reach?… When predraft expectations DONT match what your favorite team does, it’s laughable how fans automatically assume the team reached, personally when that happens I assume the Mel Kipers of the world were wrong, and didn’t know WTF they were talking about… But that’s me..
So we now have 2 Jordans and 2 Nelsons (Rowe’s first first name).

[…] Day 2 Review – Tommy Lawlor of IgglesBlitz.com […]
Check out the video on the Eagles website where they interviewed Rowe at the Senior Bowl. At the end they ask him who the toughest player is that he went up against, and he said Agholor.
So Vinny Curry was called by Chip before the draft that he was not going to be dealt. I assume the same happened with Fletcher Cox.
Boykin and Kendricks were apparently not called….
I think the writings on the wall….
What source is this?
Geoff Mosher
https://twitter.com/GeoffMosherCSN/status/594349973325643776
Beat me to it.
Maybe his information is correct and reliable, but I would love to know who in the Nova Care Complex keeps track of every call Chip makes, or could Mosher be cozy with the NSA?
Now it is possible he talked to the players themselves, but it just seems like kind of a strange thing to have sources on.
It’s possible he checked with the players or their agents.
I try not to listen to anything this time of year.. It’s all lies and half truths..
..
Funny how the People who so easily believe that we called curry and Cox before the draft were most of the most vocal about the bullshit trade rumors of Marriotta..
.l
If you believe Curry and Cox were called before the draft, then you believe the Marriota rumors were bullshit and completely false.
..
You can’t believe yesterday that we were offering Cox and Curry for Mariota, but today believe they were told they wouldnt be traded before the draft…. And if THATS bullshit, then who say the Mykal and boykin talk isn’t BS?
The big question will now be though:
How much can we get for those guys in return? Before the draft I thought a late second rounder for Kendricks and a late 3rd/early 4th for Boykin. I guess this is out of The window now though.
Yea I was jsut looking at the draft trade chart. If they do trade hopefully its for future high picks, to re-coup that 2nd lost from Bradford trade.
Always felt Kendricks’ value was a 3rd and Boykin’s a 5th. Maybe two 5ths for Boykin if you pull a good deal. If we trade Kendricks today I’d hope we get a player or 2016 pick back along with a 4th.
You might be right in terms of draft value.
Such a shame that Kendricks is not in chips long term plans given the long history of LB busts in the draft for the Eagles.
I think it’s more about his size and fitting him into the Eagles cap picture long-term. Alonso is under contract for 2 more seasons and is then only a RFA. Probably don’t see the need to pay an ILB big money when they’re going to have to pay Cox eventually and one of Curry/Thornton or ideally both.
Do we have any data points on Kendricks ability to run a defense other than the fact that he didn’t last year? Could that be the problem?
It could definitely be a question of his intelligence level and ability to call plays. He was drafted as a 4-3 OLB and didn’t come into the league having that skill set.
Could also be that he hasn’t been asked too. If Casey was Meco’s backup and had is used to calling plays, why change it up
Unfortunately he can’t play if he’s hurt. He also lacks ILB generalship required when Meco is down. Not good enough for Chip.
I don’t think you can ding Kendricks for getting hurt. Meco ruptured achillies twice, Kiko is coming off a season lost to an ACL, and Hicks seems to need his own MRI machine because he tears something getting out of bed.
However, I do agree that this is a “culture” move, he is a leader because he is well like and affable, but Chip wants his leaders to be wise warriors like Meco, Jenkins, and Peters.
kiko is not a wise warrior
Obviously I don’t know Kiko at all, but from what I’ve heard he’s about as much smarts as a 9 iron, but when it comes to football he knows his stuff inside and out. It’s like rain man at the black jack table. Can’t figure out how to open a child proof bottle, but in certain areas he’s a GD savant.
One calf strain in 3 years seems pretty insignificant to be overly concerned with his health/ability to play hurt. I get the mental thing. Always thought it was weird that the backups would set the defense when Meco wasn’t out there. He must not be too bright. Still sucks to finally hit on a LB just to watch him get pushed out.
I wonder if a conditional, 4th if he isn’t resigned, 2nd if he is, kind of deal would get interest. (2016 picks, of course)
Always blows my mind how little teams give up for proven players. Kendricks was worth a high 2nd when he was an unknown that could easily have been a total bust. After three years, while still young and coming into his own as a borderline probowler with his best football ahead of him, it’s unreasonable to expect even a late 2nd. Boykin was a total wild card in the 4th round that most thought would be a good pick in the third. And, after a 7 INT season and proving he’s one of the best slot CBs in the league, we’d be lucky to flip him for a 4th. I know there’s the financial implications of rookie contracts vs resigning these guys, but it still seems crazy to me.
yeah think that’s something chip should exploit, problem is those players cost more $$.
Yea the financial implication is real, but it seems like a situation ripe to be exploited. If you miss on a second round pick, let’s say, and 3 years later when you’d be hoping to be paying him for his second contract anyways, because you expected and wanted that pick to work, you could conceivably replace that 2nd round talent that was for all intents and purposes already budgeted for with a 4th round pick.
I think the reason these types of trades don’t happen though is because when people will only offer you a 4th or 5th for someone like Kendricks most teams just decide to keep the player in question for one more year.
We never heard one substantial rumor involving Curry’s name all off season. Sure there was some speculation. But, no one ever said sources tell us Viny is being put on the trading block or source tells us Curry was offered as part of trade package for Mariota. Every other player was discussed at some point on that level. I think Curry might actually be in the long term plans. Boykin and Kendricks almost seem to be certainly not in the teams long term plans. Cox is a stud and by all accounts Kelly highly values him. Often calling him the best player on the team. But, I think he was probably at least discussed in the trade talks for Mariota.
Would anybody be mad if the Eagles picked Amos in the 4th today?
Not at all
Not with the player, but with a repeat of the “we were going to take OL, but there were these other guys that looked more exciting” impression I am getting, yes.
Chip doesn’t have Howie to blame this year
I’d be cool with it as long as we draft Clemmings and La’el with our 6’s!
I wonder if La’el will be going in the 4th today. Organizations have had another night to sleep on it, get more details, etc. Most organizations probably won’t risk a 4th being a wash, then there’s the threat that he won’t sign any contracts if someone drafts him late. Who knows what is going to happen with him. If it wasn’t for him saying he wouldn’t sign any contracts if drafted, I couldn’t see a team not taking out a flier on a first round talent at the cost of a 5th.
True, gotta think he gets picked with at least a 6-7. Those are basically sunk picks anyway. Take the highest ceilings with those picks
I would take him and run
Yes. Especially if Darryl Williams is on board
Him too. I want them to take him with the 4th. And take a flier on Clemmings/La’el Collins with a 6th
I like Rowe, but given where he saw Rollins go I wish we kept those 2 5th’s. Some really talented players left on the board.
I disagree, I think Rowe is going to be a flat out stud for us. Can’t take that chance of waiting for him to fall. I mean there are several legitimate first round grades on him.
Yeah, I agree. Don’t leave too much to chance. We gave up two 5ths, but got back a 6th – so we can still get four more picks.
He’s not my favorite player, but I would be okay with that. Solid value at this point. I feared them going for him in the 2nd round.
To hear you talk about him he almost sounds like Nate Allen. He has the physical tools, you can find all the stuff you want on the tape if you cherry pick, but on a play by play basis he just doesn’t have the level of instincts or urgency you want.
Yes. I want glowinski or the Oklahoma lineman
Geathers!!!
Only to the extent that it makes the Groundhog Day scenario that ATG foreshadowed two days ago re: waiting to pick OL until there are none worth taking. BPA has to turn into BOLA.
Found something interesting – Jordan Hicks ranks pretty well in athleticism to NFL linebackers.
http://3sigmaathlete.com/rankings/lb/
Chip and his coach strong, both claimed they thought he would go in round 2
Well at least the eagles are consistent..I always find myself pissed off and trembling with rage in the 3rd round ( shout out to Daniel teo neshiem) but its not always because of the pick itself but about the player that we left on the board.fortunately in a few of the past instances the player i was wishing for actually fell to us in the following round…brandon boykin..corneliues ingram (had high hopes for him, shame what happened to him) so hopefully some players i love fall to us today
Yep, that’s usually what happens. With the 3rd round pick, everyone is REACH!!! Then we get a guy in the 4th that most rated much higher. Then you can just tell yourself that we took the 3rd round guy in the 4th and the 4th round guy in the 3rd if it makes you feel better.
Bennie Logan was one of the best 3rd round picks of the eagkes in the past decade
According to kimpski la’el won’t sign with a team if he is drafted today and will re-enter the draft next year.
http://www.phillyvoice.com/eagles-65-man-draft-board-updated-round-4/
Wasn’t it confirmed that he CANNOT enter next years draft?
No he will be re-entered into the draft if he refuses to sign a contract after being drafted this year. Interestingly i am not sure he can if he goes undrafted.
He originally wanted to be in a supplemental draft and was denied there.
Not sure, I may be late on this but regardless that statement clearly confirms he isn’t a culture fit.
If he goes undrafted, then he can not re-enter next year’s draft. He’d have to sign as an UDFA. The draft specifically says that if a drafted player doesn’t sign with the team that drafted him by Week 10 of the regular season then another team can draft him during the next year’s draft. Basically, he and his agent should be slipping cash to the GM of a team that drafts late in the 7th and has already taken tons of picks to draft him. Maybe a team that owes the agent a favor or wants a favor in their back pocket for the future.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told SI’s Robert Klemko LSU G/T La’El Collins would not be eligible to re-enter the 2016 draft if he goes undrafted on Saturday. no udfas get into subsequent drafts, that’s not how it works, it’s not like he’s in a special position or anything.
His agent wants him to go undrafted. If he goes undrafted and his cleared legally he can sign with any team he wants, teams will bid and pay him higher than he’d make as a 4th-6th round pick. If he gets drafted though he can either sign for below market or take a year off and hope he gets that 1st or 2nd round contract next year. Still think he’ll sign if drafted but the game they’re playing is trying to get him to go undrafted so he can play this year AND get paid better.
Wonderlic score for Hicks: 28
Wonderlic score for Kendricks: 14
I believe that Kendricks was also surpassed when DeMeco got injured in regards to calling the defensive plays. It would be something to consider in this incredibly odd situational where nobody can really understand why Chip doesn’t like our best ILB.
Its purely speculative, but maybe Kendricks still doesn’t have a full understanding of our defensive concept and scheme. Maybe he just doesn’t have as good a understanding as we’d like to see from our ILB.
Maybe MK is comfortable at his station, and Chip loves guys who are never that.
Do you pick Clemmings or Daryl Williams, OT/OG, Oklahoma? Or do you take a chance on Bryce Petty?
Personally I lean toward OL but Petty has potential in Chip’s scheme. I don’t like the Hundley fit because of his poor decisions under pressure.
I would be happy with any of those three. I think Petty is the second best QB for the Eagles in this draft. Clemmings would be awesome at RG.
We’ve got Tebow! We’re good @ QB!
I go OL, and their pick depends on how difficult it is for a Clemmings to overcome the injury.
It has to be either OL or one of the coverage safeties if they fall. I think both Amos, Derron Smith, maybe even Kurtis Drummond had decent value from now on.
I’d be livid if we select Bryce Petty, I dont want anything to do with him. If we we’re to go QB, I would much rather prefer Brett Hundley who just as easily could go up in flames and bust, but has a chance to actually become a good NFL player, something I simply cannot imagine Petty will be.
Have been a big fan of Drummond throughout this whole process.
He most certainly have his problems and limitations, but he does seem to be a player who’d fit into what we’re trying to do, and it is the 4th round now, you’re not gonna get players without issues.
Tommy said it below, the problem with these safeties were taking them in round 2, or even at #20, where other players were much better. Now, I could live one of them. Still prefer help to the offensive line, as I have less faith in Allen Barbre and our depth.
I’m all for OL. Mancz is one of my favorites left. IdkI what’s going on with Clemmings. There’s obviously something going on we don’t know.
better to wait until next year to draft a qb will be a bunch of osu guys that look good.
#ESP – Happy to trade the Farm for Mariota, but a 4th pick on a QB is rich and taking away from needs?
Pick up another recicever but go OL from here on out. Lol
Chips first draft and this is the year we don’t add any Ducks?
…
What were the odds before the draft of chip not adding a single duck?
..
Really enjoy how they are deciding to stack this defense
Ifo and Dargan still available!
IFo is a dwarf….mBut he fits our damaged injury good criteria that we apparently look for in playërs
Lol, I’m kidding on IFO. Funny, he was a sure fire first rounder to the Eagles several months ago.
Lol, I’m kidding on IFO. Funny, he was a sure fire first rounder to the Eagles several months ago.
Wonder if we were just getting ducks b/c Kelly didn’t like anyone else on the Board [b/c of howie’s evaluation].
CHip’s been surgical in this draft. Might not have 100 picks but he’s been pretty consistent in the sort of guys he’s taken. Just wish he’d take some o lineman.
Chip claims that at this is his first draft, so I guess Howie was the one reaching for ducks (cough cough BS)
We drafted two ducks in two drafts. It’s not as if every other pick went to Oregon.
I think we might add Washington as an udfa
I’m thinking Rowe is here to play safety at least initially… I’d be surprise if we used him at CB this summer…
..
we have so many DBs I’m not sure what’s going to happen.
S: Wolff, [Rowe], Jenkins, Reynolds, [Watkins]
CB: Thurmond, Maxwell, Carroll, Boykin, EJ Biggers
And that’s not including STers.
This is what we were talking about though. We needed the infusion of talent. We were just so thread bare. I’m glad to see some actual depth forming.
I personally expect the CB spot opposite of Maxwell to be filled by Nolan or Walter
..
With the youngins Rowe, Wolff, watkins and Reynolds competing for the safety spot
I personally expect the CB spot opposite of Maxwell to be filled by Nolan or Walter
..
With the youngins Rowe, Wolff, watkins and Reynolds competing for the safety spot
Under NO circumstance would I ever want to start a rookie corner
I think Rowe and Watkins will be greta opposite Jenkins, b/c they can cover. Hopefully they pan out better than Watkins. Excited to see what Wolff can bring.
The best part is basically all our Corners can play inside and out, and a few of our safeties can play corner,,, I love THAT versailtity with LBs who can really cover like Mykal, Kiko, Hicks. Barwin and MS2.. Not just our secondary improved, but also the coverage in the middle of the field should be improved with LBs that can cover and safeties like Rowe, Wolff, Jenkins and Watkins.
…
Love what they are doing with my beloved defense..
…
I don’t buy the we are losing Kendricks talk yet, need to see it to believe it
.
Even if chip thinks he won’t sign Kendircks how the hell does he know? This is a young player who is still growing. He should be a better player then we ever seen this upcoming year. Maybe Chip DOESNT have Mykal in his Longterm plans, but that could easily Change depending on the next year of play…
.l
And it’s especially tôugh to assume we will lose Mykal when literally all the people that say that, are the ones who have been claiming we are getting rid of Demeco, literally every single friggim year since he arrived…so excuse me, but I’ll play the wait and see game
not sure if kendricks understands the D as well as he should.
also, we need pass rushers. but i’m glad chip saw the way we were abused through the air and worked aggresively to change that
Not sure fans realize how good he is or the fact that he is young enough to where they probably haven’t seen his best ball yet… Lol a budding star doesn’t understand The defense? I call BS
Funny, I get “official” team emails because I’ve purchased tix. They went out of their way to list him as a DB. They basically admitted they don’t know where he’ll play and talked about how he played both spots in college.
Is Daryl Williams even athletic enough for this offense? Unless Chip is going for a physical mauler type.
Nope. He’s one of those big guys that Andy would have taken.
None of the OK OL were.
Trade back in round 4, get a 5th back and take Lael Collins please
Don’t want him – he won’t sign with a team taking him after the third
I call bullshit. He was just grasping at leverage..assume he would sign a 4th round vontract with the quickness. Not enough difference to sit out a year over the difference between 3rd round. Money and 4th or 5th round money… Call his bluff, he will sign
But it speaks to his character, don’t think he fits chips culture
Speaks to what character? A top 10 talent who may have done nothing wrong, worked his entire life for this, to have it taken away for something he has nothing to do with? Wanting what your worth has NOTHING to do with Character… Now if he is involved in the disgusting crime, that’s a different story.
..
Lael collins hasn’t said a damn thing, you can’t judge his character by his agents negotiation ploys..
Yes you can. He is acting as if he is above the rules he agreed to play by. You want in to the NFL, you enter the draft. You take that risk of being picked below where you want to be selected.
What I find strange about the situation is his delay in talking to the police and scheduling it around the draft. If anything happened to my family, I would be with them and not worried about where I was drafted. As a father I can tell you my son’s health takes priority over my dreams without second thoughts or regrets (and yes this is spoken from experience).
As far as I know, it was an ex-girlfriend, not family (unless he happens to be the father of the kid, and if he is, he might not even have known).
I was under the impression it was his kid, if not then my argument is moot.
Unknown at this time
Well, ignore that aspect of the discussion I shouldn’t have brought it up or made any judgmental comment without knowledge of the situation.
My real concern is his willingness to break the rules when things don’t go his way. Which is obviously something that can be debated. I hate Elway and Eli for doing the same thing.
Ok
ex-gf, who knows if it’s his child. it’s a crazy situation to go through, esp. at that age. as others have said there’s a lot of planning etc. that needs to happen before talking to the police and the police are the ones that scheduled the meeting, collins left chi and went back to la a couple of days ago. his agent just saw his client lose a ton of money, he’s doing what an agent is supposed to do.
i’m sorry to hear about your kid though.
There’s no evidence that the child is his. It’s an ex-girlfriend that he broke up with 8 months ago. Just an unfortunate situation for her family and for him assuming he has no connection to her death.
As I mentioned below I shouldn’t have mentioned the kid without knowing the situation and wish I hadn’t since that isn’t the discussion I want to be having.
My issue is with him wanting to subvert the rules he agreed to when he entered the draft. I hate Elway and Eli for doing that. I think it is a bad precedent to set.
Newly-signed LB Brad Jones could play on the outside for the Eagles.
Jones came into the league as an outside linebacker and recorded 4 sacks and 10 hurries in limited snaps as a rookie.
Ha, I mentioned that to Bowen and he responded yes and rotoworld got their blurb from that.
you make me not want to post from there. who knew you influenced the football world. before the draft you should have said something like “i heard mariota is addicted to pain killers”
Why do you think Clemmings and La’el Collins are dropping? The Eagles have two 6th round picks…..
Wait, authorities. I was joking and not really thinking. I had absolutely no impact on La’el Collins dropping.
I see, just in time for Clemmings agent to get a doctors statement that he made a mistake, and there is nothing wrong and for Collins to be declared innocent and get a settlement for damages.
That would be a fair scenario IMO, since the Titans decided to be dicks and not trade pick #2 for #20, Cooper and Tebow.
You should ask for a byline
Sucks to be Acho and Najee
To be fair it just sucks to suck, unless you’re Riley Cooper or a QB for the Eagles, where we seem to have a nice little collection going.
Najee might still make the team but long needs to make the team as an olb
Was Ibrahim Cambell drafted? If not take that kid in round 4 all day
An anonymous source told NJ.com teams who were interested in Clemmings “were scared off by what they heard from other teams.” A stress fracture was found during a team visit late in the pre-draft process, but Clemmings’ camp maintains it is not a big deal. “It’s been mind-boggling,” Clemmings’ agent Mike McCartney said. “(The foot) has never caused him any pain. He’s never done any rehab on it. He doesn’t even remember hurting it.”
Super weird situation. Maybe teams are just being super careful with their first 3 picks.
NJ.com is the equivalent of Barnum and Baily circus…
Anonymous source is clearly a member of Clemmings camp. But, seriously…an old, healed calcified spot that shows up incidentally on an X-ray is really not a big deal. A friend of mine that I work with is an orthopedic surgeon and he said the same thing. Either there’s something we don’t know about or these teams just hear 320 pound dude with foot problem and are irrationally scared.
I don’t know how irrational that is… heavy guy continually putting a pounding on a foot, that fracture wouldn’t heal without sitting out for a year.
cont. But that being said, if he’s that good, redshirt him.
As it’s been reported its not a fracture. It’s an old stress fracture that’s already healed. When runners get shin splints sometimes you’ll also see tiny, minuscule cracks in the outer bone. Usually happens if you suddenly increase your exercising and stress on your bones. Rest and then gradually returning to your peak exercising resolved the issue. Most stress fractures do not increase the risk of progressing to an actual fracture, particularly ones that have already healed. In fact, the calcified area that’s healed should actually be even stronger than it was before. As it’s been reported it sounds like the kid had what was essentially a severe shin split only in his foot sometime in the last few years that has healed and resolved. If it’s something different then yes, broken foot bones in a 320 pounder that slams his body into others for a living is concerning. If it’s an old healed minor calcification I’m surprised every offensive lineman doesn’t have something similar.
You know his awareness of the injury is totally irrelevant. If it requires surgery or rehab, and if it is recurring, those are all big flags. I hope this is a blip on this kid’s career. He can have a long, successful stint in the NFL if the cards fall for him.
I’ve called Jordan Hicks “Taylor Hicks” by mistake about 5 times already
Crossing my fingers that we come out of the 4th round with a decent oline prospect but at this point I wouldn’t be the least but shocked if they drafted another ILB. Let’s get some depth for the oline!
With the 113th overall selection in the 4th round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Joe Cardona, LS, Naval Academy.
Hey, we had him in for a pre-draft visit!
I’m not sure that who we draft has This giant impact on next years roster moves,.. While fans call every rookie that sits on the bench a bust, I could see chip not caring, and viewing things more like College, you get drafted, you sit on a bench for 2-3 years, and maybe THEN you take over…
…
I dont AT ALL BELIEVE that chip drafts rookies with who we will cut after next season in mind…. I could see chip keeping young players on the bench more then most teams especially as we build this roster…
..
We should learn a lot about chip over the next 365 days
i don’t think we’d cut them, but chip is drafting guys that can play day 1, not a ton of developmental talent in the first 2 days.
I could easily see Hicks play ST and a Subpackage role for like 3’years…
made a lot of tackles when he was on the field, if kiko / meco / kendricks goes down i think he could fill in and be good.
I’ll be excited if we draft Clemmings or La’el Collins. Have some balls.
If not, Glowinski is still on the board
Have some Balls and draft a top 20 talent who may have done nothing wrong other the be the most unluckiest prospect I have ever seen
…
Have some brains and stay away from 300lb men with stress fractures in their feet!
Have some balls sign them as UDFA when they go undrafted
neither will go undrafted
That’s why it would take balls!
I just read somewhere (maybe not true) that Collins won’t sign if anyone drafts him today and he is gonna re-enter next years draft.
I think any idea that he was involved somehow in the crime is total BS and if a team had pulled the trigger in the 3rd they would have gotten a steal.
I don’t know if he was on our board at all or how high he was, but if we had him rated as a 1st or 2nd rounder and we passed I think it was a mistake.
Another guy not mentioned much with connection to Eagles because he’s only 5’10” but has CB/S versatility and has 4th round value is Doran Grant of Ohio State.
Unless he can play the slot he won’t be coming here.
Can Eric Rowe play the slot?
Yes
Eric Rowe isn’t 5’10”.
Tommy, I don’t get how you can say that Chip prefers bigger LBs as a reason why he would want Hicks instead of Kendricks when they’re virtually the same size. Hicks has 1 inch on Kendricks but is slightly lighter, and he’s a long ways from big thumper ILBs like Brandon Spikes (6’2″ 255) or Dont’a Hightower (6’3″ 270) or even a thicker built guy like Demeco Ryans.
Bill Bellicheck drafts big ILB’s, Chip took a guy who has average ILB size at best.
Hicks is about the same size, a little lighter, than Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman, who are great examples of ILB’s who aren’t big but are extremely talented.
If Chip just thinks Hicks will be a baller for us, that’s great, I’m not so sure but I didn’t spend countless hours investigating every aspect of the guy. Maybe he’ll be great, but the size over Kendricks thing just doesn’t hold any weight.
Tony Pauline mentions Eastern Washington OT Jacob Rodgers and Montana DT Tonga Takai as guy Eagles could have interest in in late rounds or UDFA.

This is probably what Mariota listened to once he found out he was going to TN to play under Whisenhunt:

LSU’s La’el Collins, back in Baton Rouge to meet with police and undergo a paternity test Monday, is likely to be picked today, per sources.

If Eagles have cleared him and talked with him and confirmed he’ll sign with them, then it would be awesome to land him in Rd 4.
Hopefully we made the call and got the OK to proceed. Take a chance Chip.
He has to last until our pick first.
Call the guy’s bluff. He knows if he sits out a year for another draft his value won’t go much higher.
What time does the draft start today.
now
Thought so but the ticker wasn’t moving. They’re not very punctual this year.
As much as I like Collins as a player, I wouldn’t be super shocked if he probably was linked to the murder. This was probably almost a year and a half ago when I saw this. Maybe he changed but only Chip will know since he brought him in during the pre-draft.

That would shame the f out of me if I were an athlete.
Whoa man, its a long leap from “doesn’t workout very hard” to willing to murder a person.
You tell that to Aaron Hernandez.
I’m pretty sure being willing to murder someone is why Aaron Hernandez murdered people, not smoking pot or missing weightlifting sessions.
I know but I’m just playing devil’s advocate right now. Chip has a better feel about his personality than we do.
He’s not even a suspect. Teams are going to feel very foolish for passing on him if he ends up being very good.
Yup, innocent until proven guilty but we don’t know everything yet so..
Seems obnoxious to have a sign like that shaming players
It’s LSU. Football is serious business down there.
Taking forever to start
could we take kenny bell in the 5th?
We have no 5ths
Which is why it would be such a great value.
ANGELO BLACKSON OFF THE BOARD EVERYONE PANIC.
Ibrahim Campbell is from Philly? Didn’t know that
There goes Darryl Williams
I don’t think anyone but GEAGLE wanted him so in other words…everyone is fine with it.
Ah OK
Guys who I ever heard of: so far 1 out of 3 (Trey Flowers)
For those that can’t watch the draft and were curious about why Clemmings dropped so far.
So Clemmings just needs surgery according to some teams medical staff. So most likely, he’ll sit out his rookie year.Clemmings is considered a project by probably all of the teams in the league
Petty gone
There goes Petty. Jets continue to do Jets things.
Glad they passed on OL. Hate to lose Petty though.
Should be fun to watch the Geno Smith/Bryce Petty drama.
Somebody check on GEAGLE
I love how they’re 4 picks in and already way behind.
Amazing, isn’t it
The draft is a huge ratings bonanza, but it’s not because the NFL does a good job with the actual broadcast.
Do we care about spoiling today or can I just talk about the next pick
whose pick
how far are they?
Already have 2 more in
Yeah, I see Chicago is on the clock.

That’s um, red
Sample gone
NFL.com/Live is still trying to get the Jaguars pick at 104 on the tracker. lol.
They have the Skins pick on NFL.com but the TV is not caught up
Yeah the TV is behind the tracker which is behind everything else lol. Soon the TV is gonna be like 5 picks behind.
waiting on bears pick. skins pick announced on nfl.com
Bears are in.
God this fan announcement thing is dragging the whole thing down.
i like it better than gooddell
2/3 of them are better at pronouncing names than Goodell
Marcus Mariotto was classic. How do you not know how to say the name of one of the top few highest profile players in the draft.
How does someone advance to such a major executive position who doesn’t even know how to pronounce easy names?
After having worked in a corporate environment for about 5 years, NOTHING surprises me about peoples ability to move up the management chain.
One of my bosses used to be notorious for statutory rape/sexual harassment situations but still managed to get promoted.
Can these Tennessee idiots go already?
This is excruciating…. lol after 2 minutes of people standing there: “we are back live!”
Colts took Clayton Geathers booooo
geathers gone
Clayton Geathers
We still have chances after Colts via ticker.
There goes………
TJ Clemmings gone. The dream dies.
Aaarrrrrggggghhhhhh. Now what.
Pray that Collins is innocent?
clemmings gone, hope we trade back
TJ Clemmings went to the Vikings.
Pats take another guy we might have wanted.
I would be shocked if he was on our board, His teammate Matias might be a slightly better fit for us though.
Gah. Another one….
At this point everyone who I really wanted is gone, and I don’t know enough about the late round prospects to know who to want.
Someone tell me what to think, I need something to root for to keep my interest going here.
TELL ME WHAT TO THINK!!
Williams, Collins and Amos
Which Williams?
Sorry, Daryl Williams already went to Panthers. 🙁
I’ll pull for Amos. We need a safety.
There’s a new post up y’all.
Did Eagles trade down to Lions? I see Lions on Ticker for 113. Some kind of trade down with 49ers and Bills – I’m confused.
EDIT: Looks like we got a third rounder in 2016.
