Day 2 Review

Nelson Agholor gave the offense the key weapon they were missing on Thursday. Friday night the focus shifted over to the defense.

2nd Round – CB Eric Rowe – Utah

3rd Round – ILB Jordan Hicks – Texas

The Eagles added a pair of athletic players to the defense. That’s a good thing in my book.

Rowe played both S and CB at Utah. Chip Kelly referred to him as having the kind of size and length the Eagles like in press corners to I’m assuming that is where they will pay him first.

You will have Byron Maxwell at one corner spot. Rowe and Walter Thurmond will battle for the other spot. You have Brandon Boykin in the slot and Nolan Carroll still around for depth. CB looks a lot better than it did in late December. We still need to see these guys play, but it is at least encouraging.

I couldn’t be happier with the move the Eagles made at CB. Rowe is a player I liked quite a bit due to his combination of size, skills, athleticism and instincts. Rowe can be a very tough press corner, but he’s also got the ability to play off and be effective. Some big CBs develop bad habits in college and are used to making contact with WRs all over the field. There is no illegal contact penalty in college.

Rowe is one of the few guys that looks comfortable jamming his guy, running with his guy or even backing off and reading the play. He seems natural in zone coverage. Rowe started at Safety for 3 years and is used to being away from receivers and reading plays. He has excellent awareness and is involved in a play if the ball is anywhere near him.

I like his physicality. Rowe will hit and tackle. He will fight to get off blocks so he can get to the runner or receiver. He is an active, aggressive defender.

Rowe should challenge for a starting spot right away. He is still learning how to play CB, but was a 4-year starter in college. He learns quickly and has the physical traits you want in a starting corner. He seems to have a real competitive streak. Also, he’s an ideal fit for the Eagles scheme.

Great pick.

* * * * *

Jordan Hicks isn’t popular with some Eagles fans. I think we need to separate a couple of things…Hicks the player vs what is going on at ILB. Let’s start with the ILB situation. We now have:

ILB – Mychal Kendricks … Jordan Hicks …… Brad Jones ….. Emmanuel Acho

ILB – Kiko Alonso …………. DeMeco Ryans … Najee Goode …. Brandon Hepburn

That is a ton of ILBs. It would make sense for the Eagles to deal someone. Chip Kelly said the team isn’t shopping Kendricks and hasn’t gotten any calls inquiring about him. We’ll see about that.

The Eagles don’t hate Kendricks. They don’t think he’s a bad player. The problem is that they don’t seem committed to him long term. Chip Kelly prefers bigger players. I don’t know if Kelly has questions about Kendricks’ personality or leadership skills or anything else. I just know that Kelly isn’t as enamored with Kendricks as most of us are. If you don’t believe in a guy long term, why not deal him now and move on?

You can also think of Hicks as an investment in the future. Kendricks could leave as a free agent after this year. Ryans is getting older. Hicks could sit for a year and then take over a starting role.

With that in mind, and with Ryans and Alonso each coming off injuries, the Eagles decided they wanted an ILB. They looked all over in the pre-draft process. This wasn’t casual. They focused on this position.

Hicks is a good ILB prospect. He is 6-1, 236. That is a good frame for a rookie ILB. He shows a complete skill set. Hicks is a good run defender. He can take on OL and shed blocks. He tackles well on inside runs. Hicks has the speed to chase RBs out wide and still make the play. He takes good angles when pursuing.

The Eagles see Hicks as a 3-down LB. They feel he can blitz and cover. He looks comfortable in zone coverage. Hicks is a good enough athlete to handle most RBs and TEs.

One of the things I like most about Hicks is his tackling. He isn’t shy at all. He will attack the ball when it is in front of him. Hicks has pop when he hits, but still tries to wrap-up as much as he can. Some LBs like to hit more than tackle. Hicks will wrap and put his targets down forcefully. That’s what you want from a LB.

Hicks isn’t great in any way, but has the potential to be a good starting ILB in the NFL.

The biggest issue with him is durability. Hicks missed most of 2013 with an injury. He missed most of 2012 due to a hip injury. When he stays healthy and plays, Hicks is outstanding.

* * * * *

If you want to look at things simplistically, the Eagles are better on offense and defense, and still have more picks left. There are still needs to address, but the Eagles won’t handle them all. No team ever really does. The key to having a good draft is acquiring talent. So far the Eagles have done a terrific job of that.

Anyone know exactly what the deal is with Clemmings falling down the board? Is he going to be out for a year or something?

  2. 2 D3FB said at 1:50 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

The stress fracture has to be in a particularly unfortunate spot. Or he’s got a degenerative joint problem somewhere else that hasn’t become public knowledge yet.

  3. 3 Sammy Bee's Knees said at 4:36 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

So sad to hear. So much potential if healthy.

  4. 4 Alex Karklins said at 10:13 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

According to Mark Eckel, via Clemmings’ agent, it’s an injury from a few years ago that calcified, and is not causing any pain: http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2015/05/2015_nfl_draft_agent_says_teanecks_tj_clemmings_wi.html. Strange, if true.

  5. 5 GEAGLE said at 10:32 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

People need to stop rationalizing it over the fact that he feels no pain, that doesn’t mean shit when it comes to stress fractures. It’s not at all uncommon for a player to not feel pain due to stress fractures, often the players don’t even know anything is wrong….but if they don’t get it taken care of you can bet they will eventually feel the pain..

I don’t think anyone knows the whole story yet. Very interesting situation.

  7. 7 Alex Karklins said at 10:07 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

And here I was, worrying that he wouldn’t be available at #20. It’s amazing how things can change in a matter of days. Would still love to get him even if he has to miss significant time this year.

  8. 8 Weapon Y said at 1:49 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Tommy, I respectfully disagree. I hate hate hate the Jordan Hicks pick. Probably more than how much Jimmy Bama hates Miles Austin. I watched Hicks against Baylor and Oklahoma. He was awful. He missed more tackles than Brian Rolle, Jamar Chaney, Casey Matthews, or Moise Fokou. He got moved around by o-linemen, manipulated by the QBs eye fakes and left passing lanes open, and ran into the wrong gaps. This was an awful use of resources.

  9. 9 D3FB said at 1:54 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Frankly if you don’t like what you see against Oklahoma, I’m not sure what more to say other than that tape is objectively good.

You can argue about use of resources, but there wasn’t an OL worth taking. The safeties are all kind of personal preference, there’s no great WR that we had to have, clearly they don’t love the QBs. I mean would Carl Davis or Henry Anderson really have been any better as far as use of resources? NO.

  10. 10 Weapon Y said at 2:00 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

How about a player that doesn’t suck? I don’t care what position. Show me the tape of a good LB and I’d gladly choose him.

  11. 11 Flyin said at 2:28 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

It seems you know it all… why don’t you offer a tape of a talented 3rd round prospect for comparison,

reminder: they need to fit the eagles.

  12. 12 Mitchell said at 2:20 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Well, there was 1 WR. I have been putting my Coates on for several months but today I had to take it off. 🙁

  13. 13 A_T_G said at 7:18 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

You should have known we wouldn’t be interested in Coates in May. You should have been looking for the next Cecil Shorts or the next BJ Haltertop.

  14. 14 Insomniac said at 2:40 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

First of all, Hicks isn’t sacking everyone, picking off QBs, or knocking people out. #notdawkinssohesucks

  15. 15 James said at 8:27 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

You don’t think Clemmings was worthy to take in the third?

  16. 16 EagleNebula said at 9:27 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

No one has taken him yet so apparently they can wait…for now

  17. 17 D3FB said at 1:46 PM on May 2nd, 2015:

I would have but apparently this injury really has teams freaked out.

  18. 18 mksp said at 1:56 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

    OMG!

    He did all those things?

Do you think Chip and Ed and Billy Davis watched tape at all? Do you think they noticed that he made the worst play possible on every down?

Why did we make this pick? How can you draft a guy without watching the tape?

  19. 19 Weapon Y said at 2:02 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Yeah, because coaches always get picks right 100% of the time! That’s why Marcus Smith is an All-Pro, right? That’s why Danny Watkins is going to the fucking Hall of Fame. Your argument is stupid.

  20. 20 Mitchell said at 2:19 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

An argument about MSII being a bad pick after 1 year is ignorant as well.

  21. 21 Teddy Roosevelt said at 10:49 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Well the fact of the matter is we gotta see them play. A lot of people who weren’t great in college developed into great players. At the same time a lot of people who were good in college sucked as pro’s cause they didn’t develop properly. We found out Danny Watkins sucked cause he didn’t develop and we saw it in his play. We haven’t seen Marcus Smith play. Give him a chance bro.

  22. 22 Flyin said at 2:39 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Weapon Y, posts like this are the reason why the great posters decide to be less involved.

  23. 23 Michael Winter Cho said at 11:42 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I know, I miss Morton too.

  24. 24 the guy said at 1:57 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I don’t believe the problem with Kendricks is size any more than I do with Boykin. 2 inches of height is not the issue.

  25. 25 Sammy Bee's Knees said at 4:33 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I think they want more patience at ILB. More diagnose then attack instead of Kendricks who just attacks. When Kendricks is right he makes big plays but when he misreads his snap-decisions its a huge whiff. Watch Alonso, Hicks, And Ryans and you will see how patient they are at reading the play. I love what Kendricks does and I think he is a star. I just think that the coaches want a bit more restraint.

  26. 26 BreakinAnklez said at 9:21 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Wish he was a little bigger…with his blitzing ability, I wouldn’t mind seeing him at OLB

  27. 27 Flyin said at 2:12 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Tommy, glad you mentioned his tackling. I was impressed by the way he would drive guys into the ground if he caught them clean. I see a little Dawk in him with his move to drive the opponent to the ground. Looks like he bursts at the last moment, his feet come of the ground and uses every once of his body to punish the opponent into the ground. Like wrestling leverage take downs. Clean, yet punishing.

  28. 28 GENETiC-FREAK said at 2:35 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Anyone remember that guy who said he knew the Eagles first pick and put it in an evelope to open up on draft day..? Was wondering if his pick was right.. Hicks sounds like a replacement for Ryans.. Digging the smarts

As Baloophi or AcViking had alluded to, you just have to make about thirty of those envelopes and throw away the ones that don’t work out.

  33. 33 xlGmanlx said at 3:38 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Hicks has good size but Kendricks doesn’t? Is it that whopping 2 inches? This looks like filling out their depth as possible ST replacements for Goode/Acho and longer term development behind Kendricks/Mecco, both who missed games last year with injuries. Neither really impressed when pressed into duty or previously (Goode/Acho).

  34. 34 Sammy Bee's Knees said at 4:30 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Even if he sticks around this year as Chip says, Its hard to see the team dishing out the huge contract that he will demand on the open market when they have to consider Cox and possibly Bradford in the near future. I think an Alonso-Hicks Tandem is the 2-3 year plan most likely.

  35. 35 Jernst said at 3:55 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I’m ok with Hicks the player. He seems like a decent enough prospect with enough upside that he could be an above average starting ILB in the pros. My question though is, what is the plan to improve the talent on the Oline. I’m Not completely sold on Barbre as the starting RG. Mathis is getting way up there in years, peters isn’t a spring chicken either, and we have absolutely no quality depth at all should someone get injured. Are we really going to go into the year with a 4th or 6th round pick as our only oline addition this year. I for sure thought we’d use the 3-5 rounds to restock some of the oline depth.

  36. 36 KAJomo said at 8:22 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

With the OL I think people need to consider that all of the players the eagles may have targeted were gone. There was a big run on OL to start the 3rd roudn and we may have missed out. There is a good chance Clemmings and L Collins are both off of our board. The eagles chose not to reach like some of the other teams did and took a player they had rated highly.

  37. 37 Jernst said at 4:02 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Really thought we’d use the 3-5 rounds to restock the oline depth with more talent. Are we really going to go into this year with an injury prone QB and two injury prone backs with a 4th or 6th round pick as the only addition to our oline. I’m not sold on Barbre just yet as the starting RG. Mathis is 34, Peters is 33. We’ve got the oldest projected starting Oline in the league and nothing that makes me feel comfortable as far as backups are concerned. Can’t help but think this is super risky.

By the way, I said the same thing last year and everyone told me how stupid I was being and that we’d have the best oline in football. Tell me nobody here forgets watching Kelly-Molk-Tobin last year and actually feels comfortable that they remain the top backups.

  38. 38 Gary Barnes said at 7:20 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Exactly…I said the same thing last year as well and most scoffed at me too…dominating at the OL and DL helps win games and rings…our OL has gotten worse, our depth failed last year and we have done zero to address it…I’m not sure what Chip is doing

  39. 39 Greg Richards said at 7:34 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

When multiple guys go down at the same time it destroys cohesion on the offensive line and individual guys look worse than they are. I personally think the reserve OL on the team are underrated.

Matt Tobin looked great in the preseason last year. He then suffered a bad high ankle sprain and he was still struggling with that even when he was playing. Once they stuck Andrew Gardner at RG and has with other starters at the end of the season, he played well. PFF is hit and miss IMO but he graded out well in their rankings. Kevin Graf impressed me in preseason last year and I think he has a chance at emerging. I’m most concerned with the reserves at C. Vandervelde is constantly injured and Molk gets blown up in both pass protection and in the running game. Max Garcia is a guy I wouldn’t mind taking at all in the 4th. Some have him as more of a 5th or 6th but I saw that some teams have him ranked as the #1 C. He’s 6-4, 309 and is fully capable of playing guard too.

  40. 40 GEAGLE said at 11:06 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Molk can’t even be allowed at training camp. He is horrible unless he gained 20lbs of muscle

  41. 41 Avery Greene said at 8:19 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

They did have 9 different line combinations this past season. With that much turnover/change, I’d doubt any team’s oline would look good.

  42. 42 wee2424 said at 10:05 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Really we are even alot weaker then last year even. Everyone is a year older and we are less with depth due to Herremans being cut.

  43. 43 Michael Winter Cho said at 11:46 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

    Injury prone QB
Old OL, possibly injury prone C?
    Injury prone RB
    Injured ILB
    Another injured ILB
    rookie injury prone ILB
    but hey, smoothies!

  44. 44 bentheimmigrant said at 5:02 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

This draft has really reminded me how little respect I have for most draft analysis. The same guys who had Collins, Collins, Fisher, Clemmings, and more in the first round are going to turn around and tell us who got “value” and who “reached”.

  45. 45 BreakinAnklez said at 9:04 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Don’t forget Strong. He was tabbed as a Top 20 pick

  46. 46 bentheimmigrant said at 10:15 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Exactly. I’m fine with mocks as opinion pieces, and they help me learn about college players. But it’s seeing these writers churning out first round grades that gets me.

  47. 47 GEAGLE said at 11:30 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

What’s worse is when ignorant fans Booo our decision makers or the kid we draft, because the Predraft expectations worthless hack media put in their heads…

Like how the hell do you automatically believe that Kiper knows better then our coaches and personnel department whether hicks is a good 3rd round pick or a reach?… When predraft expectations DONT match what your favorite team does, it’s laughable how fans automatically assume the team reached, personally when that happens I assume the Mel Kipers of the world were wrong, and didn’t know WTF they were talking about… But that’s me..

If you believe Curry and Cox were called before the draft, then you believe the Marriota rumors were bullshit and completely false.

You can’t believe yesterday that we were offering Cox and Curry for Mariota, but today believe they were told they wouldnt be traded before the draft…. And if THATS bullshit, then who say the Mykal and boykin talk isn’t BS?

The big question will now be though:

How much can we get for those guys in return? Before the draft I thought a late second rounder for Kendricks and a late 3rd/early 4th for Boykin. I guess this is out of The window now though.

  60. 60 James said at 9:02 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Always felt Kendricks’ value was a 3rd and Boykin’s a 5th. Maybe two 5ths for Boykin if you pull a good deal. If we trade Kendricks today I’d hope we get a player or 2016 pick back along with a 4th.

  62. 62 GermanEagle said at 9:04 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

You might be right in terms of draft value.

Such a shame that Kendricks is not in chips long term plans given the long history of LB busts in the draft for the Eagles.

  63. 63 Greg Richards said at 9:18 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I think it’s more about his size and fitting him into the Eagles cap picture long-term. Alonso is under contract for 2 more seasons and is then only a RFA. Probably don’t see the need to pay an ILB big money when they’re going to have to pay Cox eventually and one of Curry/Thornton or ideally both.

  64. 64 A_T_G said at 9:20 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Do we have any data points on Kendricks ability to run a defense other than the fact that he didn’t last year? Could that be the problem?

  65. 65 Greg Richards said at 9:21 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

It could definitely be a question of his intelligence level and ability to call plays. He was drafted as a 4-3 OLB and didn’t come into the league having that skill set.

  66. 66 BreakinAnklez said at 9:23 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Could also be that he hasn’t been asked too. If Casey was Meco’s backup and had is used to calling plays, why change it up

  67. 67 OregonDucker said at 10:07 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Unfortunately he can’t play if he’s hurt. He also lacks ILB generalship required when Meco is down. Not good enough for Chip.

  68. 68 Honest_T said at 10:22 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I don’t think you can ding Kendricks for getting hurt. Meco ruptured achillies twice, Kiko is coming off a season lost to an ACL, and Hicks seems to need his own MRI machine because he tears something getting out of bed.

However, I do agree that this is a “culture” move, he is a leader because he is well like and affable, but Chip wants his leaders to be wise warriors like Meco, Jenkins, and Peters.

  69. 69 anon said at 10:59 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

  70. 70 Jernst said at 12:00 PM on May 2nd, 2015:

Obviously I don’t know Kiko at all, but from what I’ve heard he’s about as much smarts as a 9 iron, but when it comes to football he knows his stuff inside and out. It’s like rain man at the black jack table. Can’t figure out how to open a child proof bottle, but in certain areas he’s a GD savant.

  71. 71 Jernst said at 11:56 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

One calf strain in 3 years seems pretty insignificant to be overly concerned with his health/ability to play hurt. I get the mental thing. Always thought it was weird that the backups would set the defense when Meco wasn’t out there. He must not be too bright. Still sucks to finally hit on a LB just to watch him get pushed out.

  72. 72 A_T_G said at 9:04 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I wonder if a conditional, 4th if he isn’t resigned, 2nd if he is, kind of deal would get interest. (2016 picks, of course)

  73. 73 Jernst said at 11:53 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Always blows my mind how little teams give up for proven players. Kendricks was worth a high 2nd when he was an unknown that could easily have been a total bust. After three years, while still young and coming into his own as a borderline probowler with his best football ahead of him, it’s unreasonable to expect even a late 2nd. Boykin was a total wild card in the 4th round that most thought would be a good pick in the third. And, after a 7 INT season and proving he’s one of the best slot CBs in the league, we’d be lucky to flip him for a 4th. I know there’s the financial implications of rookie contracts vs resigning these guys, but it still seems crazy to me.

yeah think that’s something chip should exploit, problem is those players cost more $$.

  75. 75 Jernst said at 12:21 PM on May 2nd, 2015:

Yea the financial implication is real, but it seems like a situation ripe to be exploited. If you miss on a second round pick, let’s say, and 3 years later when you’d be hoping to be paying him for his second contract anyways, because you expected and wanted that pick to work, you could conceivably replace that 2nd round talent that was for all intents and purposes already budgeted for with a 4th round pick.

  76. 76 Jernst said at 12:23 PM on May 2nd, 2015:

I think the reason these types of trades don’t happen though is because when people will only offer you a 4th or 5th for someone like Kendricks most teams just decide to keep the player in question for one more year.

  77. 77 Jernst said at 11:47 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

We never heard one substantial rumor involving Curry’s name all off season. Sure there was some speculation. But, no one ever said sources tell us Viny is being put on the trading block or source tells us Curry was offered as part of trade package for Mariota. Every other player was discussed at some point on that level. I think Curry might actually be in the long term plans. Boykin and Kendricks almost seem to be certainly not in the teams long term plans. Cox is a stud and by all accounts Kelly highly values him. Often calling him the best player on the team. But, I think he was probably at least discussed in the trade talks for Mariota.

  83. 83 Ark87 said at 9:28 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I wonder if La’el will be going in the 4th today. Organizations have had another night to sleep on it, get more details, etc. Most organizations probably won’t risk a 4th being a wash, then there’s the threat that he won’t sign any contracts if someone drafts him late. Who knows what is going to happen with him. If it wasn’t for him saying he wouldn’t sign any contracts if drafted, I couldn’t see a team not taking out a flier on a first round talent at the cost of a 5th.

If he goes undrafted, then he can not re-enter next year’s draft. He’d have to sign as an UDFA. The draft specifically says that if a drafted player doesn’t sign with the team that drafted him by Week 10 of the regular season then another team can draft him during the next year’s draft. Basically, he and his agent should be slipping cash to the GM of a team that drafts late in the 7th and has already taken tons of picks to draft him. Maybe a team that owes the agent a favor or wants a favor in their back pocket for the future.

If he gets drafted though he can either sign for below market or take a year off and hope he gets that 1st or 2nd round contract next year. Still think he’ll sign if drafted but the game they’re playing is trying to get him to go undrafted so he can play this year AND get paid better.

It has to be either OL or one of the coverage safeties if they fall. I think both Amos, Derron Smith, maybe even Kurtis Drummond had decent value from now on.

I’d be livid if we select Bryce Petty, I dont want anything to do with him. If we we’re to go QB, I would much rather prefer Brett Hundley who just as easily could go up in flames and bust, but has a chance to actually become a good NFL player, something I simply cannot imagine Petty will be.

Tommy said it below, the problem with these safeties were taking them in round 2, or even at #20, where other players were much better. Now, I could live one of them. Still prefer help to the offensive line, as I have less faith in Allen Barbre and our depth.

What I find strange about the situation is his delay in talking to the police and scheduling it around the draft. If anything happened to my family, I would be with them and not worried about where I was drafted. An anonymous source told NJ.com teams who were interested in Clemmings “were scared off by what they heard from other teams.” A stress fracture was found during a team visit late in the pre-draft process, but Clemmings’ camp maintains it is not a big deal. “It’s been mind-boggling,” Clemmings’ agent Mike McCartney said. “(The foot) has never caused him any pain. He’s never done any rehab on it. He doesn’t even remember hurting it.”

  171. 171 Mitchell said at 11:02 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Super weird situation. Maybe teams are just being super careful with their first 3 picks.

  173. 173 Jernst said at 11:23 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Anonymous source is clearly a member of Clemmings camp. But, seriously…an old, healed calcified spot that shows up incidentally on an X-ray is really not a big deal. A friend of mine that I work with is an orthopedic surgeon and he said the same thing. Either there’s something we don’t know about or these teams just hear 320 pound dude with foot problem and are irrationally scared.

  174. 174 ICDogg said at 11:24 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

I don’t know how irrational that is… heavy guy continually putting a pounding on a foot, that fracture wouldn’t heal without sitting out for a year.

  175. 175 ICDogg said at 11:25 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

cont. But that being said, if he’s that good, redshirt him.

  176. 176 Jernst said at 12:40 PM on May 2nd, 2015:

As it’s been reported its not a fracture. It’s an old stress fracture that’s already healed. When runners get shin splints sometimes you’ll also see tiny, minuscule cracks in the outer bone. Usually happens if you suddenly increase your exercising and stress on your bones. Rest and then gradually returning to your peak exercising resolved the issue. Most stress fractures do not increase the risk of progressing to an actual fracture, particularly ones that have already healed. In fact, the calcified area that’s healed should actually be even stronger than it was before. As it’s been reported it sounds like the kid had what was essentially a severe shin split only in his foot sometime in the last few years that has healed and resolved. If it’s something different then yes, broken foot bones in a 320 pounder that slams his body into others for a living is concerning. If it’s an old healed minor calcification I’m surprised every offensive lineman doesn’t have something similar.

  177. 177 unhinged said at 11:40 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

You know his awareness of the injury is totally irrelevant. If it requires surgery or rehab, and if it is recurring, those are all big flags. I hope this is a blip on this kid’s career. He can have a long, successful stint in the NFL if the cards fall for him.

I dont AT ALL BELIEVE that chip drafts rookies with who we will cut after next season in mind…. I could see chip keeping young players on the bench more then most teams especially as we build this roster…

I just read somewhere (maybe not true) that Collins won’t sign if anyone drafts him today and he is gonna re-enter next years draft.

I think any idea that he was involved somehow in the crime is total BS and if a team had pulled the trigger in the 3rd they would have gotten a steal.

I don’t know if he was on our board at all or how high he was, but if we had him rated as a 1st or 2nd rounder and we passed I think it was a mistake.

  196. 196 SteveH said at 11:31 AM on May 2nd, 2015:

Tommy, I don’t get how you can say that Chip prefers bigger LBs as a reason why he would want Hicks instead of Kendricks when they’re virtually the same size. Hicks has 1 inch on Kendricks but is slightly lighter, and he’s a long ways from big thumper ILBs like Brandon Spikes (6’2″ 255) or Dont’a Hightower (6’3″ 270) or even a thicker built guy like Demeco Ryans.

Bill Bellicheck drafts big ILB’s, Chip took a guy who has average ILB size at best.

Hicks is about the same size, a little lighter, than Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman, who are great examples of ILB’s who aren’t big but are extremely talented.

If Chip just thinks Hicks will be a baller for us, that’s great, I’m not so sure but I didn’t spend countless hours investigating every aspect of the guy. Maybe he’ll be great, but the size over Kendricks thing just doesn’t hold any weight.
