Countdown to Bradford

Are you ready to see Sam Bradford finally play? I know that I’m excited.

When is the last time there was this much buzz about an Eagles QB? You might have to go all the way back to Donovan McNabb in 1999. There wasn’t much buzz on Kevin Kolb. Mike Vick was more of a mystery since he was coming to the Eagles from prison.

The initial mystery with Bradford was why the heck Chip Kelly traded for him. That narrative changed during the OTAs and minicamp as we started to hear good things about Bradford. Then came Training Camp, where Bradford really stood out. He threw the ball well. He was accurate. Kelly looked a lot smarter once people actually saw Bradford play in the Eagles offense.

The question with Bradford now is about his health and durability. Is he ready to be on the field against a live defense? Can he take a hit? How will he move around?

It finally looks like we’ll get answers to those questions tonight.

I do wonder if the hype might be a bit much. If Bradford doesn’t throw a TD tonight, that doesn’t mean he’s been overrated and it’s time to panic. Bradford re-tore his ACL last August. He might be a bit rusty in his first game action in a long time.

I’ll be focusing on a few things. I want to see how he moves and how he responds to pressure. Players coming off a major injury can be skittish at times. Bradford needs to show he can deal with the rush and stay focused on his receivers. I’m excited to see how he throws the ball. Bradford can be very accurate and has a good arm. Let’s see that.

OTHERS OF NOTE

* John Moffitt will likely play a lot of RG tonight. He was very rusty last week, but did get better as the game went along. He needs to take a big step forward this week if he’s going to challenge Andrew Gardner for the starting RG spot.

* Josh Huff didn’t have any passes come his way in the opener. Let’s hope the coaches call his number tonight so we can see how much Huff has progressed since last year.

* I thought Matt Tobin and David Molk were the only backup offensive linemen who played well last week. The Eagles need some other players to emerge and push for roster spots. Could be a veteran like Dennis Kelly, a second year guy like Kevin Graf or a rookie like Brett Boyko.

* Raheem Mostert was good last week. He just needs to do more of the same. He wasn’t able to bring back a kickoff last week and I hope that changes.

* Someone please throw a good pass to G.J. Kinne.

* Walter Thurmond didn’t get much of a chance to show what he can do last week. The starters will play more tonight. I hope we get to see him make a tackle or two. Would love to see him make a play in coverage.

* It will be fun to see Vinny Curry play some OLB.

* Please let Bryan Braman play with the 2’s. He was banished to the 4th quarter last week and dominated. We know he’s better than scrubs. Let’s see how he does against better competition. Is there some reason he couldn’t be the #3 OLB?

* Someone needs to step up in the battle for the Nickel spot.

* Ed Reynolds had a good game. He still needs to play better to seriously push for a spot. He must make his presence felt on STs. He needs to be an active run defender. Picking off passes that thrown to you is a good thing, but he still needs to be better.

* We get to see new players Dasman McCullum (#49) and Deontae Skinner (#54). Both players are linebackers. We’ll have to wait and see how they are used.

    The only inactives for the game are Ertz and Marcus Smith. I’ve heard the top 3 ILBs might not play but if that was the case, one would think they’d have made them inactive.

    Well, lack of effort or shying away from contact was and issue here. One of the things that Tommy has mentioned that bothered him is Cary having a big mouth and getting into fights, but not really backing it up on the field

    I’ll be surprised if Kelly doesn’t have Bradford at least looking deep on the first play. At a minimum, that deep crossing route to JMatthews where he runs through 3 zones out of the slot.

    Think back to Sanchez’s first regular season play last year: The deep post to Maclin against Houston. (Can’t remember what his first play was in pre-season 2014.)

    And last week, the offense opened with Sanchez throwing the deep seam route to Burton.

    So, despite his ground-chip preference, I think Kelly’s a showman at heart . . . . And he has a weapon to show-off in Bradford.

    I understand if they decide to take Bradford out, but honestly, I would love to see him get one more drive. You can see the talent is there, but he is still rusty. He isn’t going to play in the fourth preseason game, and likely to play no more than a half in the third, so I wouldn’t mind just a bit more time for him to knock off that rust before it actually matters.

    Wouldn’t make sense. That would mean 5 RB. Not only would he take Tutus spot but that would mean you would go light at WR.

    Why have 5 RB when you have the talent we have at RB? Tutu led the league in ST tackles last year and is a good blocker on PR and KR. He would also be good for the ST hands unit.

    The only spot Mostert would be able to see any action at would be KR and you have other viable options there. Tutu would take Smith’s spot on STs.

    It makes no sense to keep Mostert on the 53. He is going to practice squad. Keeping him for the 53 is not looking at the big picture.

He had an overall better game than Barner with the exception of a bad rookie mistake of not knowing he was getting thrown to by Sanchez. Not to mention Mostert can get bigger and fits that Chip’s bigger N-S RB preference. What would you even do with Barner when Sproles will probably do all of the returning anyway? Lets not jump to conclusions yet about roster bubble guys.

    FYI, Tutu has done nothing for us yet. He’s down there with Taylor Hart with disappointments.

    You are right in that it has only been 2 pre season games. Therefore you are willing to discount a proven NFL player at ST over someone that has done nothing on ST yet. Your own logic defeats your statement.

    PR is more valuable then KR simply because there is more of it as evidenced by Mosterts 0 opportunities at returning a kick and Barners multiple opportunities at returning punts in which he housed 2. Part of the reason as to why Barner was able to return 2 kicks was due to blocking in which Tutu is good at and was involved in.

    As noted above there are other viable KR options on this team. One of them is Huff who did flash at it last year and by using him would mean you don’t have to hold a spot open for someone that is only going to perform KR duties.

    You speak of Kelly’s N/S running style that he prefers. When and how do you possibly see Mostert playing RB this year? Only after and if one or two of our top RBs go down?

    Roster building isn’t really about your best 53, it’s about getting your best 53 on the actual field.

    Mostert wouldn’t play RB. He would just end up taking the space of specialist so he could maybe return kicks in which again somebody else can do.

    You say Tutu hasn’t shown anything. I don’t think you know how to evaluate ST play 100%. He has indeed done good things on ST. Good blocking and downfield coverage. No he did not down the punt but he was downfield first which is a feat in its own and does grade out as points on the ST point chart. Yes there is a thing. All things which did contribute to our historic ST last year, and in order to keep that up players like him are needed since good ST players have departed or been promoted.

    Just like Brad Smith last year or the numerous other ST players like Braman, they are not here to play O or D, they are here to fill pieces of the puzzle to ST. So you can knock on his drop or offensive PI but that is not why he is here.

Barner just looks like a typical Oregon scatback that really is just suited for ST so far. It’s not like we know Mostert can’t play STs either. That’s why you need another 2 game evaluation before labeling Barner a lock over Mostert.

    Barner doesn’t just seem suited for ST he is excelling at it. The vision he showed on the return last night was impressive.

    Furthermore I don’t see him as a replacement to Sproles in the sense of him doing the same things as Sproles. I don’t see Mostert having the ability to split out wide or move into the slot.

    If Kelly does view him as someone that will take over the third RB spot then the PS would make sense.

If you are a Tebow fan though, while that is a bad play (especially since he didn’t score now that the review is over), it is Tebow doing Tebow things. If you like him, you have to be ok with that kind of play IMO. He is a skilled runner, not a good passer.

    Kind of my point, though. I don’t hate Tebow, but I never thought he was a pro-caliber QB either. If he was a rookie and was making these kind of decisions, I’d be ok with it, but not happy. He’s 28 if I remember correctly, he’s never going to improve. Barkley can make plays if he’s protected and makes decent decisions. Will never have a great arm, but for our 3rd string QB, don’t really care. I’d rather have Bryan Bennett who stunk it up late last game. He’s both an athlete and has a live arm. Needs tons of polish, but at least he’s a baby.

    You are right. The goal line used to extend indefinitely as long as the ball crossed the extended goal line before the player stepped out of bounds. A few years ago, they changed the rule so the ball had to be inside the pylon.
