Big Day for the D

Posted: September 27th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 396 Comments »

The Eagles gave up 20 points in the 1st half of the season opener. Since then, they have allowed 36 points in 10 quarters. That’s good defense, especially when you consider that the offense still isn’t exactly sustaining drives and helping them to stay off the field.

Nobody will be calling this bunch Gang Green II any time soon, but they are showing real signs of improvement from the past couple of years.

The Jets ran 75 plays, generated 323 yards and 17 points.

The Eagles defense came up with 1 sack, 2 TFLs, 9 PDs, 2 FFs and 4 takeaways. Beyond the stats, they seemed to come up with key plays at key moments. I think all of Eagles Nation was ready to lose it when Ryan Mathews fumbled late in the game. A few plays later, the Eagles take the ball right back. That was a huge moment in the game. Keep in mind that the defense did that while missing Cedric Thornton, Mychal Kendricks, Kiko Alonso and Taylor Hart.

Backups and role players had a big day. Jordan Hicks, a player more than a few fans hated during the draft, had a terrific game. He led the team with 10 tackles and had a hand in 2 takeaways. He picked off a pass and recovered a fumble. Brandon Bair went from inactive to starting at LDE. He deflected 3 passes, one of which was picked off by Hicks. Rookie Eric Rowe got used in Dime sets. He broke up one pass and picked off another. The INT came in the end zone.

When a team is trying to come off an 0-2 start, they need everybody to do their part. You could really see this with the defense. Just about everyone who played contributed to some key play in the game.

No one is saying the Jets are some juggernaut offense and the Eagles played a great game, but the defense came up big on a day when it was needed.

*****

*****

As good as the win was, there is still a lot of work to be done. This win didn’t save the season. It bought the team another week to get their act together.

This team hasn’t come close to playing up to their talent. They got started in the right direction today, but they still have a long way to go.

The offense didn’t score a point in the 2nd half. As good as the defense was, a 24-0 lead turned into a 24-17 finish. Receivers dropped key passes. Sam Bradford was off target with a couple of throws. There is still too much sloppy football. That has to change if this team is going to have a successful season.

The Eagles showed signs of life on Sunday. They’re only a game out of the division lead. Things are wide open, but the Eagles must start playing good football. Winning ugly is fine if your goal is to stay in the playoff hunt. Chip Kelly wants more than that and this team has the potential to be more than that.

I do think winning a game will allow the players to exhale, so to speak. When things aren’t going well, it seems the weight of the world is on your shoulders. The media was looking for scapegoats and compelling story lines every day. The players no longer have to answer questions about being 0-2. They no longer have to discuss the awful run game. And so on.

For the fist time in a while, there is something good to talk about.

I’m sure SalPal will still find some salacious angle to obsess on for the next 6 days.

It’ll be nice to go through the week knowing that they got a shot to go 2-2 and get some more momentum moving forward.

Salacious angle: is Billy Davis keeping the playmakers on the bench? A season after Bradley Fletcher could do nothing to get benched, it looks as if the best the defense has to offer may have been buried on the sideline, and inactive list, the first two weeks. Davis is playing the wrong guys, or my name isn’t a palindrome for anal piano stool.

  30. 30 Henly125 said at 11:21 PM on September 27th, 2015:

I’m hoping Bradford gets his act together as the season goes on. He’s way off on the down field throws, and it’s evident that throwing downfield is out of his comfort zone. Too often he favors the short completions and then ends up firing some innacurate passes when he tries to sling it. I’m not worried yet though.

We need to be patient with this WR group. They’re the weak links in the offense right now, outside of Jordan Matthews. You have to wonder if Josh Huff is going to be taking the majority, if not all, of 1st team reps moving forward, because Riley Cooper has been nonexistent. Next weeks game in Washington would be a good time to start the young guys together and leave them there. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had enough of Miles Austin already, the guy just can’t get any separation and cannot hold on to the football when he does.

Very glad the running game got on track today, especially against that formidable Jets front 7. Lane Johnson had some really nice blocks today, while Jason Kelce cleaned up some of the protection issues. I think the offensive line will build on this performance and start to play better together.

I was very pleased with Jordan Hicks today. He’s very instinctive and was all over the ball today! He was the bright spot on the D today, imo. I’m glad he’s showing up and flashing his potential; he’s making Chip look good for bringing him into a once crowded LB group. Nolan Carroll was pretty good today in coverage today. I feel really good about our secondary. Maxwell was moved around a bit today and played a lot of press. Good day for the defense. Jenkins is playing on another level right now.

Now let’s bring home that second win against those Bumskins next week!

  55. 55 SteveH said at 12:39 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Looking at our old friend Foles, didn’t see the whole game but appeared he had a workmanlike game until the 4th when he threw the pick. What we kind of expected to happen is happening, they invested a ton in running backs who can’t run for crap because the OL is terrible and there’s no receivers. I’m not sure what the Rams plan for building that offense is but why bother drafting Todd Gurley to run behind that line? He had 6 carries for 9 yards today. That’s almost Demarco Murrayesque!

  56. 56 anon said at 1:18 AM on September 28th, 2015:

You know Murray was hot watching randle run for 100yds and 3tds. ‘ve interesting too see if that relationship falls apart. I think Mathews is a better runner though he can’t catch.

  57. 57 SteveH said at 12:48 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I don’t think Sam is seeing the field well. He is playing like Kaepernick and staring down his primary read

  60. 60 Avery Greene said at 1:32 AM on September 28th, 2015:

The staring down receivers thing is troubling. Two years out of the game seems to have a pretty big effect on his decision making. I still think it’s fixable tho.

  61. 61 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 1:35 AM on September 28th, 2015:

  62. 62 Avery Greene said at 1:36 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Yeah, which is why I’m hoping he can find that consistency. This is the same issue that we had with Foles, so we take a shot on a guy with higher upside and hopefully it works out.

  63. 63 A_T_G said at 6:43 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Maybe the QB and the OL aren’t the only ones still learning. Maybe there are plays where the WRs are running bad routes too?

  64. 64 bill said at 9:17 AM on September 28th, 2015:

There were definitely a few plays where I thought I saw receivers ending up in the same zone as another receiver, which is a sign that someone ran the wrong route. I think there were also a few plays that were called as a single read play, most notably a WR screen to the left that was clearly a busted play in the 2nd half. SB didn’t come off the screen and waited for several seconds before sailing it out of bounds. I’ve been happy with Sam’s reads in general, not happy with his (in)accuracy.

  65. 65 anon said at 2:43 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Wonder if that’s why we don’t see package plays or read option

  66. 66 Buge Halls said at 9:34 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I think the main reason we’re not seeing the Read Option is Kelly keeps saying that he doesn’t run the RO!

  67. 67 laeagle said at 3:10 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I’m still giving Bradford the benefit of the doubt, but I did see some troubling staring down of the first read today. I hadn’t seen that in preseason, and nothing about his history indicated that it was a problem with him. So it was weird to see that today.

Let’s hope this is still rust, and trusting in the O-line, and that we can move past it. Not sure if that’s the case but I can always hope.

  68. 68 BlindChow said at 10:24 AM on September 28th, 2015:

  69. 69 Buge Halls said at 9:33 AM on September 28th, 2015:

  70. 70 FairOaks said at 2:50 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Probably because they moved it pretty well in the first half — felt like a decent total of the first half (plus we had 89 return yards on one play). In the second half we had a good lead so weren’t quite as desperate for offensive production (and may have dialed it back some to drain clock). But the offense really did very little in the second half.

Autsin got behind Cromartie twice and Ags behind Revis once. If Sammy throws a better ball we might be talking about how we blew out the Jets

I wouldn’t say that Bradford was good in this game but he wasn’t anywhere near as terrible as some people seem to think. A few makeable catches would have changed a lot of perceptions about his performance.

  104. 104 Avery Greene said at 1:54 AM on September 28th, 2015:

This is the whole execution thing. No one person is to blame, but I think the majority of the stuff is fixable.

  105. 105 JoeBlow said at 2:03 AM on September 28th, 2015:

yea Bradford and the receivers just are not in sync yet. Either Bradford makes a good throw/right read and it’s dropped, or he reads it well, the receiver is wide open and Sam makes an awful throw…They just can’t sustain a rhythm in the passing game and it is concerning although i believe they develop a good chemistry as the season progresses and Sam gets a better handle on this offense…..building on today’s emergence of a running game would certainly help the QB and receivers

  106. 106 Avery Greene said at 2:07 AM on September 28th, 2015:

This is how I feel about it. They’ve lost 2 games, but both were winnable. It’s still early in the season and enough time to get better and gel.

Had we gone 0-3, I think I would be prepared to talk execution. At 1-2, I will give them another week or two before we roll out the gallows.

  108. 108 bill said at 9:08 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Plus, I’d argue that while Bradford’s accuracy has been inconsistent (tending towards bad with a few gems sprinkled in), he’s been making good reads in general. Yes, he hasn’t pushed it deep much, but this was not the week to try that. Let’s see what happens next week. My guess is that they’re going to still throw mostly short/short intermediate stuff, because that’s the tempo style (Chip wants the ball out fast). The deep passes are going to be constraint plays, that you’re only going to see when they feel they’re executing the bread and butter plays properly.

  109. 109 Iskar36 said at 3:29 AM on September 28th, 2015:

The accuracy issue is real regardless of if the catches are made. The unwillingness to go deep are real, regardless of if we win or not. The real question comes down to can we win consistently with the way Bradford is playing, even if the WRs pick up their games. To me, the answer is still no. That doesn’t mean things can’t improve as Bradford gains confidence in his WRs and in this offense, but so far those issues see to be the overwhelming majority of the sample we are seeing.

The other issue here is that we gave up a lot for Bradford AND by the end of the year we will have a very tricky contract situation at QB. The way Bradford is playing right now, no way he is worth a Franchise Tag. But some team out there is bound to overpay for him if they are desperate at QB (and many teams are). So for the Eagles, you have to feel like he is worth paying decent money to, and to feel comfortable doing that, you have to see him throwing accurately and making plays. So far this season, that has been largely missing.

  110. 110 Michael Winter Cho said at 9:59 AM on September 28th, 2015:

If this is what Bradford is, then he is a worse player than Sanchez.

  111. 111 P_P_K said at 10:51 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Some people may scoff at this because Mark has such a bad reputation but you raise an interesting question. What would be the Eagles record if Sanchez was qb1? Is Sam really that much better than Mark? Is he that much better than Nick? I’m holding off on judgement until deeper in the season but I sure would like to see Bradford fulfill all the hype he had coming into the League.

  112. 112 BobSmith77 said at 2:23 PM on September 28th, 2015:

I don’t know. Maybe 2-1 if Sanchez makes a few plays in the Dallas game and avoids some of the horrible miscues that Bradford made. Marginal though.

  113. 113 BlindChow said at 10:18 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Bradford will be a backup next year. He might go to a team with a rookie QB (where there’s a possibility he might start), but it’s clear now he’s a 2nd- or 3rd-tier talent.

  114. 114 P_P_K said at 10:48 AM on September 28th, 2015:

That’s fair but I’m also not willing to give him more credit than he deserves. I’ve written elsewhere that Sam should be evaluated based on what it cost to get him. My expectations may have been too high as I was hoping for him to be playing at a much higher level. The season is still young, though, too early to reach a conclusion.

  115. 115 laeagle said at 3:08 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Has anyone mentioned the effect losing Gardner may have had in the 2nd half? Not saying he was All Pro or anything, but if part of our problem was O-line cohesion and chemistry, and after finally getting some good signs that that’s happening in the first half, one of the guys goes down, isn’t it natural to assume that his loss had an impact, despite what we might think about his individual play in a vacuum?

  116. 116 D3FB said at 6:14 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Tobin played well in his stead. He was what he is. The only big negative play from him was his second play in when Williams beat him in pass pro for a sack (pass pro vs speedy or long lever players is Tobins one major flaw). Specifically Tobin did a very good job on the outside zones.

The run game was ok in the second half but the jets said screw it and loaded the box, and the passing game had some bad drops and errant passes that got us off track.

    2nd half drives:
1st drive: Sproles right 0 yards
    2nd drive: No runs
3rd drive: 2 yards off left, 0 yards up middle (Pryor tackle)
4th drive: 6 yards right, -2 yards left (Pryor)
5th drive: 13 yards left, 9 yards right, 2 yards middle, fumble
6th drive: 4 yards left, 1 yard right
7th drive -1 yards left, 6 yards middle (Peters hurt), Sproles right -3
8th drive: 2 yards left (Pryor), 2 yards left, penalty, penalty, 0 yards

16 runs: 42 yards. Not great but Pryor was clearly in the box and Sproles was minimally effective in a loaded box. Matthews did ok.

  118. 118 sonofdman said at 8:34 AM on September 28th, 2015:

And it worked and they held on and got the win. That is what is important. Chip gets criticized for not caring about time of possession and not slowing down when they have a lead. With the way the offense has been playing in recent weeks, maybe it was good to play conservative and “lets not lose” in the fourth quarter. The could have executed better, but for this week against this opponent, playing conservative worked.

  119. 119 Ark87 said at 8:55 AM on September 28th, 2015:

So are we going to game plan for 4 turnovers in the second half to go with our non-scoring conservative offense too?

Scoring 21 points in the second half is tough, scoring 21 more points than Chip Kelly when he is looking to score is virtually impossible. Belichick is evil, but that ish works.

  122. 122 Corry said at 7:48 AM on September 28th, 2015:

What bothered me the most about Bradford performance is that at times he had enough time to have a tea party before throwing the ball but he still seemed a bit rushed. Obviously it’s not ALL on him as many people have pointed out, but his protection has been good.

  123. 123 Jernst said at 7:57 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Yea. I defended Bradford a lot the past two weeks. But, he did not play well yesterday. Granted, he had two perfectly placed, 80 yard TDs dropped, on the wheel route by Sproles and Mathews. But, overall, he did not look comfortable at all.

  124. 124 eagleyankfan said at 7:59 AM on September 28th, 2015:

that throw to Sproles was way off(wrong side). You can see where Sproles was expecting it. Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was catchable but still a bad throw. I doubt Bradford was aiming for a back shoulder play with no defender around. Later in the game, he made the correct throw on the same play.

  125. 125 sonofdman said at 8:30 AM on September 28th, 2015:

The frustrating part about that Mathews play is that while the throw to Mathews was to the wrong shoulder, Mathews did the hard part and adjusted to the throw in plenty of time and got both hands on the ball and then just dropped it.

  126. 126 P_P_K said at 10:44 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I’m glad you said that. Maybe Matthews could have caught the pass but it was still a crappy throw.

They weren’t perfect, but come on. People make that catch for Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers and Peyton Manning all the time and no one questions the accuracy on their throw. It hit Mathews square in the chest. He should have caught it and scored.

  128. 128 eagleyankfan said at 7:57 AM on September 29th, 2015:

Brady, Rogers, Peyton hit there RB’s in stride and not make them turn the other way(wrong side) to catch it…AND…even with the errant throw — I still said it was ‘catchable’ — a catchable throw doesn’t mean it was a great throw…

  129. 129 Buge Halls said at 9:41 AM on September 28th, 2015:

  132. 132 Ark87 said at 8:37 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Our whole offense is designed for the tempo. Once it gets rolling and we turn on the tempo it’s ridiculously hard to stop. Our playbook is tiny to accommodate just that. Once the tempo is off, it can look ugly, and that goes back even to the glory days of 2013. I hope we eventually Throw in a full playbook almost just for those situations. The boys look to the signalers, they’re signalling to huddle up. Sam gets the play radio’d in and he passes it along.

    1. Lets our offense burn clock like a real offense when it needs to.

    2. prevents defenses from honing in on our preferred set of plays so much in game planning.

Offense is getting bogged down? Huddle up and throw something they haven’t game planned for. Start drives off with any number of plays, maybe script 2 in a row per drive. All you need is to get the chains moving, flip on the tempo and go nuts.

We say we keep a small playbooks for execution sake but:
    A. it hasn’t helped our execution
    B. these are professionals, never heard anyone blame poor execution on the size of a playbook.

I think it’s fair to say that when CK arrived, the Eagles had a solid offense & a shaky defense. Now several years later, the defense seems to have been re-built with the kind of scheme & players that CK envisions. The results look promising; we haven’t seen a D performance like yesterday since JJ days. This re-build has worked. On O, the realistic path had to be downward as inherited good players got old, retired, left in free agency, got cut, or just didn’t want to be here. Some of this was the natural decline of any NFL unit over time; some resulted from the new coaches actions. I think it’s fair to call the O a work in progress with another off-season or two needed to get the players Ck wants. The good news is that while the Eagles are getting re-built, they are getting younger, which can only lead to better days & years ahead.

  179. 179 sonofdman said at 10:23 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Get ready, that is going to be the manufactured controversy of the week in Philly. Crap like: “What’s wrong with Murray?” “Should Mathews be starting instead of Murray?” “Are the Eagles better when Murray doesn’t play?’

  180. 180 Avery Greene said at 10:26 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Which is silly. It was obvious the OL blocked better this game, but the hot takes are what sells papers.

  181. 181 BlindChow said at 10:41 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Mathews was still having to break tackles to get a lot of those yards, though. I’m okay with starting Mathews over Murray.

  182. 182 sonofdman said at 10:49 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Mathews played really well and did a good job breaking tackles, but he was mostly breaking arm tackles or breaking tackles in trying to get through the line, not having to avoid players 5 yards deep behind the line of scrimmage on every run like in the Dallas game.

  183. 183 anon said at 11:01 AM on September 28th, 2015:

i think Mathews is better than Murray honestly, especially if he can stay healthy – and catch the ball – he’s a beast.

  184. 184 GEAGLE said at 11:23 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Murray isn’t exactly chopped liver… People act like Murray wants to dance behind the line… I think both Murray and Mathewa are great fits for this offense and that by the end of the season we will be glad to have both

  185. 185 bill said at 11:23 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Which isn’t to say Murray stinks or anything, but everything I’ve read says that Mathews is supremely talented, but just can’t stay in the lineup.

Hopefully reporters scan through the in-game comments section on Iggles Blitz first. We already answered that question.

  187. 187 Michael Winter Cho said at 11:06 AM on September 28th, 2015:

It’s because Murray is the biggest profile, in terms of national awareness, addition/change to the team, even though it’s probably less important than the secondary, linebackers, OL, or QB.

  188. 188 GEAGLE said at 9:46 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Agholar needs to get going. Obviously he wasn’t going to have his breakout game against Revis but Redskin DBs are trash, Nelson has to get going THIS WEEK… How horrible does Amerson have to be, to get cut last week from a skins secondary

  189. 189 P_P_K said at 10:36 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Agreed. This should be the week the rookie kicks it into gear.

  190. 190 EaglesFANqq said at 11:59 AM on September 28th, 2015:

It’s not Agholar. HE is a rookie. It’s Sam Bradford who is a verteran with a career starting record of 19-51

  191. 191 Ark87 said at 11:59 AM on September 28th, 2015:

He reminds me of Huff in the sense that he seems to be trying to hard to hard to break out. He just needs to take baby steps, for now just play like you’re Jason Avant, don’t even think about YAC, just give your QB a place to throw to and catch the ball when it comes your way. The rest will work itself out.

All of our WR’s seem a hesitant to leave their feet to go get the ball, all of them seem like they desperately want to make an amazing snag on their feet and run for a TD.

Interesting, and probably means Bradford is still not comfortable yet with his reads.

  195. 195 Ark87 said at 9:53 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Are we sure that’s a read/option? We have so many plays that look like it but the outcome is pre-determined in the play call. Heard we haven’t run any actual r/o with Sam.

  196. 196 Corry said at 9:55 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I don’t know for certain, but looking at Celek turning to look back, I’m thinking it is an option.

  197. 197 holeplug said at 10:04 AM on September 28th, 2015:

read/option in the ‘traditional’ sense that sam has option to run no its not. but he is reading a defender on the play and should have thrown it to celek since the defender crashed to stop the run

  198. 198 Ark87 said at 10:09 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I’m not sure he was making a read. period. Or had an option. period. They just have the exchange that looks like it to freeze a defender. Almost every hand off looks just like that, and we used to rage at Nick Foles for making bad reads just like this. Then Chip goes and lets everyone know we run 2 R/O a game, tops.

  199. 199 holeplug said at 10:14 AM on September 28th, 2015:

would be nice is one of the 5000 beat writers asks chip about the play today. think it was a packaged play b/c of celek tho. he runs a pass route and immediately looks for the ball

  200. 200 Ark87 said at 10:18 AM on September 28th, 2015:

definitely. I think Celek is selling it, and he did draw a Safety to cover him, still would have been an easy first down if we threw to him. Just not sure it was in the play call. Jets we sure sold on that run though, yeesh. They were certainly convinced there was a 0% chance that was a pass. After seeing that, I think they were right.

  201. 201 sonofdman said at 10:20 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I don’t know if there is an actual read on the play or not, but it seems silly to have Celek go in a pass route to try to freeze the defender if there is no read and no option to pull the ball and throw it to Celek. Why not just have Celek block the defender in that case?

  202. 202 Ark87 said at 10:30 AM on September 28th, 2015:

The idea is a linebacker has to slip out to cover him in the flat. the guy that didn’t cover Celek was frozen by the play, he ended up just holding the edge. so it should be 5 on 5 and nobody for 20 yards. However both LB’s blitzed and a safety had Celek in coverage coming from way out.

    Just RPS play calling.

  203. 203 sonofdman said at 10:47 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I understand it, I just think it is silly to run plays with built in options, but then not let the qb make the read based on what the defense is doing. It makes some sense to take away the read when the option is the rb taking the ball of the qb running the ball in order to try to protect the qb, but when there is a run/pass option built into the play let the qb make the read and use it. Unless Bradford is in uncomfortable with making the read, which is an even bigger problem.

  204. 204 Ark87 said at 10:51 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I never understood it either, going back to the Foles days of looking like a R/O hand off and not being one. Like why not let him run the read option if their defense is going to occasionally have a busted coverage. I get it gives your run play a small chance to give an advantage if they honor the read, but if they totally blow the read it’s like, god I wish we had the option on that play.

  206. 206 HawaiianEagle said at 10:41 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I rewatched game and Chip confronts him immediately after the play. If we pick up a first probably overlooked.

  207. 207 FairOaks said at 11:18 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Isn’t there a linebacker or safety steaming in to cover Celek? If it was a really quick throw it could get there, though the first down may not have been guaranteed. If it was a bit late that might have been a risky throw. Still, a quick throw might have been better than handing it off — even not counting the stranded defender the Jets had five players rushing to that other side, and a sixth player (linebacker) came through the gap to make the tackle in the backfield.

The line was not pushing forward though so it did give the option of a pass there. The stranded defender was there to stop a a cutback from Mathews or a run from Bradford, but did leave Celek open momentarily (though it was not a huge window).

  208. 208 Corry said at 11:20 AM on September 28th, 2015:

I think given the Jets pre snap alignment, the throw was the better option . Celek had a chance whereas Sproles had almost no chance.

  209. 209 HawaiianEagle said at 11:46 AM on September 28th, 2015:

The safety was 15 yards away from Celek. It would easily have gotten the first and could have been a much bigger play.

  210. 210 FairOaks said at 12:11 PM on September 28th, 2015:

15 yards but already closing fast. It takes time to get into a throwing motion and for the pass to reach the sidelines. He would have been much closer by the time the pass was caught, and if there was any delay in the throw that is pick-six territory. I do think it was a better option but unless that guy misses the tackle I’m not sure it’s a big gainer, and a great tackle might even prevent the first down. But if he could get it out real quick, yes it was a better option than the run which was going right into a run blitz.

  211. 211 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 12:38 PM on September 28th, 2015:

Yeah, but he (the Safety) isn’t going to stop Celek before he gets the first down.

Bradford needs to read the numbers in the box instead of just blindly handing it off

  216. 216 EagleNebula said at 10:56 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Sports Science is a young field which will improve with increased data & study. Science takes time to gain understanding of both what works and what doesn’t. And with technology giving us more data, there is currently a disconnect between the abundance of data and proper interpretation of it. I personally am encouraged by the relative health the Eagles have had the last few years.

  217. 217 Michael Winter Cho said at 11:05 AM on September 28th, 2015:

Even if you do everything right, you are still going to have injuries in a violent, explosive sport. The only way to judge whether SportsScience(TM) works is multi-season studies with lots of data points. All else is cherry-picked anecdotes either way.

Some observations: Jordan Hicks looks really good. He was seemingly in on every play….we’very got some good ILB depth for years to come. Miles Austin….yuck, can’t get separation. Eric Rowe played 2 balls better than Fletcher or Williams did all of last year. People need to be more patient with Bradford. Had a couple good preseason games and all of the sudden his expectations changed….a lot. Nothing better to get out of a slump than have a couple guys makes plays for you. Too many dropped passes this year it’s sickening. There are only 2 guys on the planet right now that can basically put the ball on the money every time so you need guys to help out. He won’t get in a groove if guys continue to drop passes.

This is a poor analogy but I’m going to use it anyway. I play football every Sunday morning in which I am the QB…and even on the smallest scale (a bunch of guys playing touch football), it’s really hard to get “on fire” when your guys are dropping your best throws. It’s mental.

I don’t buy the non separation thing. Austin got open a few times and Bradford just missed him.

And when a WR is clearly covered, like Austin was on 4 straight 3rd downs, the QB should go to his next read.

  298. 298 Will:↑↑↓↓←→←→BA said at 12:45 PM on September 28th, 2015:

I wouldn’t say he has no help. Sammy hasn’t been very good on a lot of throws especially to the outside. Austin and Ags both got open yesterday. And last week Cooper was open a few times.

Often he’s not coming off his first read and looks like he’s rushing out there. But the notion that WRs are never getting open is getting old

Would someone please explain to me what is wrong with the following post: Hey Jimmy, what was wrong with the post that got reviewed then ultimately deleted. I did not curse, say derogatory things to any sub culture, make racist comments. All I said: Why do people rip on successful people who become billionaires,(Ie Pro Sports owners), then cry, what they perceive to be too much money to players of lesser economic backgrounds. As long as the Franchise is not handcuffed and forced to cut young talented players for economic reasons like Dallas and the A’ints. As long as the Eagles are in a good cap situation, who cares, besides Lurie, what the players are getting paid. People bash Sams contract and Maxwell contract. They bash Cooper’s too but I think that is more because of his fateful night at the concert. Unless the Eagles are forced to move on from a player like Cox because of cap hell or your Name is Jeffery Lurie, why care. It’s house money not your money.

Obviously the first part of the post was not in the original post nor did I remember what I posted verbatim. But it is generally the same. I did copy the second post because they reviewed it a second time. I may have used the word “bitch” instead of “cry” but I do not see one overly negative, disparaging remark in there.

Is Philly Voice owned by some Communist that don’t believe in free speech? Or are they offended by me because I said, “people bash successful people” ( Ie Sports Owners)?

(Communist / Facist) I probably could of left the last line out. I am frustrated. But did you see anything offensive or derogatory in there? Is there something, that you read, that has any reason not to be posted? I’m being serious. I’m dumbfounded that the above was not allowed to be published on the internet.

Edit: I’m not trying to argue or bash you, I just replied to you to see if you actually read anything in the post that should not have been posted to the site.

No idea, man. Maybe email them directly.

I actually did. To jimmy@phillyvoice.com . I haven’t heard back. OH well. That stuff pisses me off.

Yeah, your email probably got stuck in some junk mail filter. I seriously doubt they are trying to censor you.

I’m going to go ahead and put a hold on this post for pretending Cooper doesn’t suck.

Haha, I’m not arguing that Cooper doesn’t suck.. But serious what is with them over there? I just won’t go there and bring my “click $$ revenue” to ” PHILLY silence your VOICE” any longer.

You may be on to something. Lo/qq doesn’t cry about the o-line or the lack of depth enough to be Kempski though.

Wait..we’re in a good cap spot right now?

  391. 391 Eagle Talon said at 4:33 PM on September 28th, 2015:

Relatively speaking. Just under $15 million this year according to OTC. The cap is expected to rise next off season. I’m no Howie Roseman, but it seems we are good. D3FB broke it down last week. Again I’m not a capologist or whatnot.

  392. 392 Insomniac said at 4:42 PM on September 28th, 2015:

Eh 11mil is either 2 decent starters or one stud. Just because the cap rises doesn’t mean we’re in a good spot. since we still have starters to extend and future rookies to sign.

    Argument for argument’s sake.

  394. 394 D3FB said at 5:54 AM on September 29th, 2015:

Between 15 carryover and figuring modest cuts/restructures (currently on hook for 131 so work down to 125) and mid point of projected cap rise (min 150 could be higher than 160) so say 155+15 we have ballpark minimum 45 million in space for next year. That’s enough to do any business we want to do.

Rookies don’t count worth shit against the cap, only the first round pick would likely knock someone off the 51 for cap purposes and we likely won’t be picking crazy high (10th overall Gurley has 2.5 mil cap hit, even Winston was only 4.6 mil)
