Thursday Night Update

The Eagles got their man by taking QB Carson Wentz.

But what is going on with Sam Bradford? It sounds like any hope of a deal with Denver is dead. The Broncos traded up to draft Paxton Lynch, who will be their QB of the future. They don’t have a QB of the present. Some people point out Mark Sanchez is there, but I don’t see how the defending Super Bowl champs can put Sanchez on the field as their starter. I just can’t see that.

Denver could make a run at Brian Hoyer to be their stop-gap starter until Lynch is ready to go, likely in 2017. I’m sure they would love to have Bradford for this year, but can’t see them trading good resources for him at this point.

The Jets still need a QB and something could happen there.

That said, if you listen to everything the Eagles said, they expect Bradford to stay put and be the team’s starter this year. I’m not sure how wise that is after the trade demand, but we’ll see what happens. I’m sure there will be lots of rumors floating tomorrow during the day.

Fran Duffy and Greg Cosell did some great video pieces for PE.com on Carson Wentz. They aren’t archived yet so I can’t link to them.

They showed Wentz making pre-snap adjustments, good reads during plays and moving in the pocket. These are subtle, but crucial qualities for NFL QBs. You really need access to All-22 tape to see some of this stuff. We still don’t get much of that for prospects unfortunately so it was great to see Wentz broken down in that kind of detail. Really great pieces.

I still preferred Goff to him, but the stuff they showed did make me even more confident that Wentz can be a darn good NFL QB.

*****

I also enjoyed this Frank Reich interview on Wentz.

*****

In case you missed this, Dallas had significant interest in drafting Wentz at pick 4 if he was still on the board. The Eagles may have found their franchise QB and also blocked the Cowboys from finding theirs all at once.

That’s a heckuva 2-for-1 deal right there.

Was actually thinking about Jackson and the Eagles. Not that i expect the Birds to ever have him again, but he seems to fit what Pederson is looking for in that he is grabbing deep threat WRs.

Im sure Pederson would love to have Jackson and McCoy. McCoy isnt a big back, but he is a good pass catching RB in which we can guess from Pedersons days in KC he likes. Of course he would also be the best back on the team. McCoy, Mathews, and Sproles would be a hell of a 3 headed monster.

Of course its always a possibility that if we still had Jackson and McCoy then we wouldnt have Pederson but still Chip.

  28. 28 Eagles_Fan_in_San_Fran said at 12:47 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I think this was all about Sam wanting to go to Denver and be the hero he thinks/dreams he can be by winning the SB there.

Now he’s looking at the Jets as the last realistic possibility, so I think he’s going to now turn around and say he’s OK with Philly and wants to compete for the job long-term (and he’ll be shown the door the first day after the 2016 season is over, no matter what).

  29. 29 Media Mike said at 4:54 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I think and hope this Bradford thing will blow over and he will be back. I’m glad Howie didn’t just cave and give him up for nothing. The Eagles will probably be better with Bradford next year and I prefer not rushing Wentz. Daniel can hang with Wentz on the sideline and point out everything Sam is doing wrong.

  32. 32 SteveH said at 9:30 AM on April 29th, 2016:

  33. 33 ChoTime said at 10:31 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Bradford has suddenly become the Anti-Christ. It is really funny to see people turn on him so viciously. The guy and his agent made a business decision so he wouldn’t waste the best years of his career as a babysitter and now all sorts of negative personal things are being attributed to him. All we know is what his agent has said. If he personally goes on talk radio and starts whining, that’s a different thing. I think the whole thing is funny and incompetent all around. It does go to show that Bradford really never was any good and still isn’t.

  34. 34 Cafone said at 1:04 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Is everyone excited to see Ezekiel Elliot running behind the Cowboy’s line against the wide-9?

  35. 35 Media Mike said at 5:00 AM on April 29th, 2016:

    Yes. In a world with;
    – a salary cap
    – many other RBs who could run behind that line
    – and a D in Dallas that will force them to have throw the ball a lot to keep up in games

They’re never going to get good value from picking Elliot 4th.

  37. 37 RobNE said at 8:59 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I’m trying to see it as two different windows. The Cowboys just forced theirs to happen earlier, which may actually help us. In 4 years when we win the SB, Zeke will be on his last legs.

  38. 38 P_P_K said at 9:25 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I’m trying to see it that way. Unfortunately, I also see Zeke as a fairly sure thing while Wentz is more of a gamble. I’ll say it again, I really hope I’m wrong.

  39. 39 Anders said at 10:40 AM on April 29th, 2016:

The thing is, the potential pay out of Wentz is far higher than Zeke.

  40. 40 P_P_K said at 10:45 AM on April 29th, 2016:

In my head I know you’re right. I just hate the thought of the frickin’ Cowboys having an Offensive trifecta with Romo, Bryant, and Elliott.

If Braford continues to whine or, as likely, gets hurt again, maybe Wentz rides in on a white stallion and proves himself able to play this year.

  41. 41 Anders said at 10:55 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Romo is one bad hit away from retirement. The Cowboys first wanted Wentz then Lynch because they know he is one hit away

  42. 42 P_P_K said at 11:02 AM on April 29th, 2016:

    Hicks delivers.

  43. 43 Rellihcs said at 5:40 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Schwartz does not equal Castillo/Washburn. Did his Detroit/buffalo defenses suck v the run? Does he always use the wide 9 every play? And since when does our dl suck b the run? Cox et al automatically lose their skills? I ain’t scared.

  44. 44 Anders said at 8:42 AM on April 29th, 2016:

You know Schwartz usually have top run defenses with his version of the wide 9?

Also that OL is hugely overrated imo.

  45. 45 P_P_K said at 8:50 AM on April 29th, 2016:

  47. 47 A_T_G said at 8:09 AM on April 29th, 2016:

He even wears the red do-not-touch jersey sitting around the house, watching TV? Sounds about right.

  48. 48 Mr. Magee said at 1:22 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Just like there was no market for Sammy Sticks in the offseason, there was no market for him on draft night…

Bradford really has two choices at this point: Show up, be a professional, and compete, or simply retire. There’s really nothing else. He could sulk and pout and be a “Bratford,” and maybe force the Eagles to release him at some point, but is that really the way he wants to go out of the league?

He’s got plenty of F you money, and given how he and his agent have played their hand thus far, I think there is at least some chance (30%?) that he hangs up the cleats. If he does, expect it to occur at the least opportune time for the Eagles organization.

  49. 49 Forthebirds said at 10:08 AM on April 29th, 2016:

My favorite thing tonight was the people who booed Goeddel tonight with every single pick.

Even towards the end of the draft and it literally looked like their were a handful of people, they still booed him loudly. I’m still shocked that as many people watch this on TV that it is so sparsely populated by the end of the night.

Bears’ fans very loud and pronounced booing of their pick made me think of this classic video of Jets’ fans reactions:

  62. 62 Media Mike said at 5:03 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Yes. That video was stupid, but he has exactly zero failed drug tests as a college player. He has exactly zero failed drug tests as an NFL player.

So he’s nowhere close to facing an NFL suspension, Jason Peters isn’t getting any younger or more willing to play 16 games at a high level, and we lack any clear long-term tackle opposite Lane.

    Yes.

If every football player who smoked pot in college didn’t get drafted we’d have a labor shortage. Tunsil just had the misfortune of someone sabotaging him on the big night. The real question for me is who’s the asshole who has it out for him? I’d have taken him in a heartbeat.

  66. 66 Forthebirds said at 10:21 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Didn’t the guy interviewing him, Sanders I think, mention it was his stepfather (presumably ex) but Tounsil said he didn’t know who it was (being smart enough not to go down that path and destroy his moment). Sanders had to bring up the elephant, but I am not sure why he needed to mention the stepfather unless it was to out the jerk.

  67. 67 Media Mike said at 5:16 AM on April 29th, 2016:

There are some “brilliant” teams out there.

    – San Diego took a 4-3 DE to play 3-4 OLB. Dumb
    – Dallas threw the value of picking #4 into the trash can. See the tweets I posted from Joel Corry.
    – The Titans took a guy who can’t pass block on an NFL level and is going to get outquicked on most run plays as well. I wouldn’t take Conklin at 58, let alone 08.
    – The Giants took a workout warrior CB with little to no game awareness.
    – The Lions took a tackle who has less punch than the Venus de Milo statue.
    – Atlanta – REACH
    – Buffalo – took a 4-3 DE to play OLB, didn’t they just go through this with Mario?
    – Houston – Fuller can’t catch is a very low-character disloyal guy.
    – Pittsburgh – REACH, and the guy doesn’t project into Pittsburgh’s system
    – Denver – took a d-bag hipster who has just as much bad tape as good. See the Bucky Brooks article on Lynch for a good laugh.
    – Green Bay – took a 4-3 DT to play in a 3-4.
    – San Fran – took a 3rd round guard in the first round. We need a guard and I didn’t want that guy in the 3rd. let along in the late 20s.
    – Arizona – Nkemdiche is an insane flake of a human being. If you saw the ESPN interview with him, you’d be horrified.

So I’ve got 13 of 31 picks as dumb.

  73. 73 xmbk said at 7:59 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I feel good about the picks of all 3 division opponents. GB has earned the benefit of the doubt. Much as I dislike Arians, he creates a locker room that should give Nkemdiche good support. Conklin at right tackle could work very well for Tenn. I wonder if SF moved into the first round just for the 5th year option on a lineman.

  74. 74 D3FB said at 9:57 AM on April 29th, 2016:

5th year option for a guard wouldn’t make sense. The option dollars would be pegged to OL as a whole (therefore LT) and would be more than any long term extension would pay him per year.

  75. 75 xmbk said at 10:01 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Good point. Head scratcher then, either they really liked him, were worried about someone like Seattle, or just had too many late round picks burning a hole in their pockets.

  76. 76 D3FB said at 10:03 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Little bit of all three I suppose. Just a weird projection from a scheme standpoint. Good player though.

  77. 77 RobNE said at 10:28 AM on April 29th, 2016:

It seems Kelly gets hyper focused on who he likes (rather than using tiers, he wants one specific person) and then gets worried that the person will be gone and panics.

  78. 78 D3FB said at 11:17 AM on April 29th, 2016:

He’s all about evaluation over valuation.

As long as you’re nailing your evaluation it works fine.

  79. 79 RobNE said at 11:50 AM on April 29th, 2016:

I think it would be quite outside the norm (and therefore a really bad bet) to ignore valuation for evaluation as a practice and be successful.

  80. 80 xmbk said at 11:50 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Possible. It’s likely Baalke is still running the show there, just with Kelly’s input. Can’t say it was a bad move, if you’re going to make a mistake on a lineman, it should be for a guy with a nasty streak.

  81. 81 RobNE said at 11:52 AM on April 29th, 2016:

they traded up for a guard, right? Baalke must have run to the bathroom and told Gamble and Chip not to do anything until he got back.

  82. 82 xmbk said at 11:56 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Think Kelly finally decided guards are vital to the run game?

  83. 83 RobNE said at 3:08 PM on April 29th, 2016:

maybe but my point was he overvalued guard and traded up b/c he wanted one particular player

  84. 84 Forthebirds said at 10:33 AM on April 29th, 2016:

The Gnats passing on Hargreaves for Apple was great. I posted a few days ago that the birds move up to second was not just to get their man, but to prevent the Cowpatties from getting him. I sensed that the moment Jerrah said Romo was good for the next 4-5 years. If he believes that the league should mandate drug testing for owners.

  87. 87 bill said at 8:24 AM on April 29th, 2016:

The scary thing for Denver is that if Sanchez is their day 1 starter, you can guarantee that by week 4, the fanbase will be screaming to start Lynch. And starting Lynch this year, under SB expectations, no less, is the perfect way to erase any hope of him developing to his potential.

I read about halfway through the Nkemdiche story (I’ll finish it later) and the one thing that came up that’s come up in other places too (Reshard Mendenhall’s retirement for example) is how scared NFL people are of football players who display any outside intellectual interests. Kind of amusing.

Jags – Ramsey at 5 is amazing. They need to leave him at safety. He’ll menace that who division for 10+ years. Bradley will really know what to do with him.
Ravens – Stanley is a flat out upgrade. Great pick.
Saints – Rankins will really get after a lot of people at the point of attack. Especially for a team that will play a lot of shootouts.
Dolphins – Tunsil doens’t have any failed drug tests and really helps fix some o-line issues in Miami.
Indy – Ryan Kelly absolutely improves that line. Fixing their issues at center and then outward was a great approach.
Vikings – Treadwell is the best WR in the draft. 40 times should not trump his game film. The guy has great hands and body control. He high points the football and already toe taps like a pro WR. Great addition for that team.
Cincy – Took a great CB prospect and forced the Steelers to take a much worse one.
Carolina – WOW. Butler is not only a great player, but an amazing low cost over 5 year hedge against Star moving on if they have to let him move on.
Seattle – Got a better o-lineman than Titans, Lions, and Niners……….who can start right away. Great work.

Regarding Jax, I think you give Gus too much credit right now.

The Ravens should have taken Tunsil imo. Stanley is not close to his level imo.

Vikings – I think Doctson is the best WR in the draft, but the top 4 can all be debated.

  100. 100 Rambo said at 6:59 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Sleep on it Sammy. Even Denver is drafting their quarterback of the future, so if that’s where you wanted to be you’ll be seeing Lynch. Nobody in their right mind will build around you, and you only with no foresight into the future. I know we’d probably do much better WITH you, but once a player says they don’t want to be an Eagle, I’m done with them. Even if this is all an “act” it doesn’t speak well to his leadership or a team-first mindset.

  101. 101 eagleyankfan said at 7:35 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Can’t assume Denver takes Lynch if they had SB. Maybe they took Lynch because they didn’t have SB….

Can’t assume they wouldn’t either. Elway had Osweiller with Manning on his roster so I’m not sure why they wouldn’t. Even if it wasn’t Lynch, can’t convince me they wouldn’t take someone worth grooming.

  103. 103 Mac said at 1:23 PM on April 29th, 2016:

  106. 106 Gary Barnes said at 10:22 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Agreed, just wanted to make clear there is a wide range of what defines “eventually” and how teams replace their current starter. The approach the Broncos took is way different than the Eagles; we’ll see which turns out to be better.

  107. 107 Bob Brewer said at 7:18 AM on April 29th, 2016:

  108. 108 Bert's Bells said at 8:01 AM on April 29th, 2016:

    Why do you read them?

I do because I don’t really follow minor league football, so I don’t know who these guys are. The better ones also give a sense of other clubs situations.

I don’t expect them to be accurate predictions, most writers don’t approach it that way either.

  109. 109 Rellihcs said at 8:05 AM on April 29th, 2016:

Right. But the fans who try to base arguments off of where people were projected really piss me off. Cue the Marcus Smith conversations, et al…. Not saying Smith was a great pick, but people like to cite mock drafts as reasoning for their opinions which is just garbage logic.

they’re a jumping off point. i use them to start looking at players. but for some reason i was way less interested in them this year. maybe it was us having two picks in the first four rounds

  112. 112 Media Mike said at 4:23 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Mock drafts, no. They’re hard to use because you have writers trying to be all 32 teams at once.

Existing big boards / player rankings are quite appropriate.

Smith was a complete and total reach at 26.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/profiles/marcus-smith?id=2543725

    3rd-4th round

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/2129296/marcus-smith

    61st overall

And he’s a guy who I really liked. I hoped we could get him towards the end of the 2nd round or into the 3rd.

  113. 113 Rellihcs said at 4:25 PM on April 29th, 2016:

No no no. You are taking media talking heads as the gospel but they are not objective nor reliablly accurate at all. That’s not what teams felt, that’s what those media sources felt. Citing them is foolish.

  114. 114 Media Mike said at 4:36 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Yes Yes Yes…………….unless you can get me his median place on all 32 teams draft boards so we can see how much of a reach he was or wasn’t. I cannot just trust a team’s valuation of a guy absent any criticism using available rankings of that player.

  115. 115 Rellihcs said at 4:58 PM on April 29th, 2016:

What you cannot do specifically is accept that there are some things we cannot know accurately. Your grasping at weak straws but you could just accept that we don’t know rather than cite an objectively poor measure.

  116. 116 Media Mike said at 5:03 PM on April 29th, 2016:

You’re correct in that I’ll accept taking somebody else’s word for things unless they can specifically contradict the existing information on the subject.

If I’m trying to get a house appraised, I can’t tell the appraiser to value it over the existing comps for that house. If some nut wants to pay well over the value of the house, he’s welcome to do it. But he’ll never get approved for a mortgage for that amount. If the Eagles wanted to pay well over market value for Smith given all of the existing evaluation of Smith, they have to be prepared to be questioned on it. And when nobody can produce information saying he was worth the pick at 26, you can’t say he wasn’t a reach.

  117. 117 Rellihcs said at 5:08 PM on April 29th, 2016:

There were reports that washington would have taken him a few picks later which are just as valid as what you’re sighting.

  118. 118 Media Mike said at 5:11 PM on April 29th, 2016:

2 reaches vs. 30 more prudent uses of resources doesn’t justify the reach.

Again, get me his median place on the boards of all 32 teams and I can have my position changed.

  122. 122 Media Mike said at 5:10 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Provide better. Please. I’d love to use a different set of information to more accurately judge if a team reached or not. But I refuse to just allow these teams to take whoever they want without any outside judgment in relation to if that is a guy they still could have acquired while also trading down or taking in a later round.

  125. 125 Media Mike said at 5:16 PM on April 29th, 2016:

There is nothing to get over. Boards for all 32 teams exist. The league should release them in a team-identifying blind manner after the draft and let us all judge.

So I’ll maintain he was a reach until something concrete that says he wasn’t is offered.

    silver linings:

Murray didn’t work out for us, but Eagles signing him led to the Cowboys using the overall 4 pick on a RB.

We gave up a lot to move to 2, and we weren’t able to get good value from Denver for SB, but both of these resulted in QB’s (Wentz and Lynch) being kept from Cowboys who really could have used a future QB.

Watched the Gruden QB camp with Wentz and came away impressed. I still think it’s a risky pick due to the jump in competition and his relatively slim resume as a college starter, but he’s clearly very smart and he came across as a high-character guy who loves the game and will work hard to improve. I’m glad he’s coming to a team where he won’t have to start right away because a year learning to play against NFL competition without the pressure of having to save a failing franchise is likely to really benefit him.

I think Pederson and Howie will stick to the script and have Wentz sit behind Bwaaadford and/or Daniel for at least the first half of the year (hopefully the whole year or as long as he needs). Pederson went thru this with McNabb so he experienced this and knows it “works.”

I’m thinking this is going to be a ball-control offense (dink and dunk) with an aggressive defense. So when Wentz does get the nod, he and the offense won’t be needed (theoretically) to put up 28-31 points a game to win. He will need to protect the ball and “end each drive with a kick.”

If he grows into a stud QB in 3-4 years, then the offense can change to fit what he’s become.

Beyond that, there are so many other circumstances that impact the outcome. It’s really difficult to do good science – just ask the scientists embroiled in the replication crises in psychology and medicine. And without good science underlying statistics, the statistics are about as useful as measuring the angle between Mars and your zodiac sign to predict how your day is going to go. I can do all sorts of statistical analyses and build a very impressive sounding databases, but in the end, it’s all BS.

Kind of torn…Wentz has slowly grown on me the more I’ve watched him. Still not completely sold on him, considering what we gave up to get him. But, definitely feel better about the pick than I did a week ago.

There’s an alternate universe, however, that exists somewhere in which we stayed put at 13, drafted Laremy Tunsil and his gas-mask bong (and if you really want to go crazy perhaps in this alternate universe we were able to use our 2 thirds, Kiko, Maxwell and Murray to trade into the second and take Jack).

Tough to decide, obviously without the benefit of hindsight, if you’d still make this trade had we known that Tunsil would still be there at 13. Tunsil and Jack, plus our first next year and our 2018 2nd or Wentz, whoever we draft in the 3rd round this year and no 1st next year and no 2nd in 2018.

This could work out a million ways, but Wentz has to be pretty damn good in any scenario that makes this a winning trade for us.

Bradford needs to grow up. He has an amazing opportunity as the already established starting QB of the Eagles. His future is entirely in his hands. If he plays amazingly the Eagles will surely keep him starting so they can groom Wentz on the bench. Even if he plays very well he can find a new fantastic contract in a new city when the season is done. But instead he’s destroying his reputation in the league. Remember, we’re talking about a guy who had one of the lowest QBR’s last year – a first pick bust who got swapped for Nick Foles! But instead of appreciating this he’s whining because the Eagles aren’t putting all their eggs in his basket. Someone needs to smack him in the face.

    ..
Just because his agent thought he could pull this off, don’t expect Bradford to go all “Terrell Owens” at Novacare. A lot has been said, but none of it came from Sams mouth, all he did was go Dark for a week, don’t think any bridges have been burnt or anything too serious
    ..
I prefer us not dealing with this drama, but on the other hand I don’t hate that we rattled Sams cage a bit. Til now, he has been given Everything and it hasn’t led to realizing his full potential. Curious to see how putting him in a position Where he has to compete for his Job and his future effect his 2016 season. If there is a good Tackle prospect the team likes i can accept going after a long term solution at that spot. Take a guard in the 5th to be depth/competition long term and address OG again next year if you still need talent at LG.

    DT #1 need
    OT
Need a LB who ideally comes with Middle and Strongside versatility
    RB
    And backüp Safety
    ..
Think Gardner, Brooks and Wiz are all better than the Guards who played last year. Out of Brooks, wiz, Gardner, Bunche, Barbie and Turnstile Tobin, we should have 2 or 3 players who provide clear upgrades to last season… I’d rather find out exactly what we have with guys like Bunche and Gardner before we go invest in Guards…obviously Id love to get talent at Guard and every other position, but have to make the most of the picks we have, and prioritize. Think we can wait a year to spend a pick on a G, hopefully we get lucky with Undrafted Guard talent..
    ..
Think Guard and CB are needs that will have to wait Til next year, which gives us a year to figure out exactly what we have at that position with young kids like Bunche, JaCorey, Denzel Rice, Rowe… Hopefully we can find an Undrafted Gem at one of those spots…. Brandon Brooks is going to be a stud Guard for us. We need 1 of 5 Guards to step up. I like our odds, and Wiz is starting Caliber Pro as a temporary safety net

  277. 277 solid said at 2:36 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Think Gardner was our best Guard, and he got hurt as soon as the season started….we get him back, Gardner and Brooks and Wiz are clear upgrades to Tobin and Barbie. Brooks is a stud, and Wiz is a more credible starter than anything we had last year.. We also have some young players like Bunche, and young players who put in work tend to improve,

Shit, Id love to be able to dump a first round pick into a guard, but we are limited because of the Trade.
    ..
Btw, the Eagles are going to draft a OT, odds are he will come with Guard versatility as well….

  279. 279 solid said at 2:52 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Gardner did win the position, but he wasn’t a world-beater. He was adequately average and given who he was competing against, that is an extremely low bar. I do hope Brooks pans out but we will see. I am optimistic and hope he’s the answer at RG. The Eagles haven’t had any undrafted OL emerge since the days of Juan Castillo. I just don’t have the same confidence in Stoutland as I did in Castillo so I completely disregard the likes of Bunche and Boyko, etc. IMO, the Eagles need legitimate prospects earlier rather than later for the OL.

  280. 280 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:05 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Think Brooks will go on to be one of the best free agent additions of the last few years,, I never even imagined the Texans allowing him to become a free agent. Getting him for me is easily one of the most exciting additions of this offseason. My expectation is Lane and Brooks are going to form one of the Nasiest G/T tandems in the game, and Brooks should be a Godsend for Kelce..
    ..
I don’t love that Wiz has been a center the past few years, but he wasn’t Some undersized center, so I expect him to handle going back to his rookie position(Guard) pretty well, especially since the dude as motivated as it gets, feeling disrespected that he has been a solid starting pro for years and is still being forced to earn a legit extension and some security. Doubt a 5th round rookie Guard would win the job any way

  281. 281 solid said at 3:31 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Wisniewski is a band-aid. He is on a 1-year deal and is probably looking to cash in on this prove-it contract to get himself his last long-term deal. He’s already 27. Peters has 1 year left, if he can stay healthy for it. Lane will switch to LT. Projecting ahead to next season, Lane-?-Kelce-Brooks-?. There is no good young prospect coming down the pipeline until they invest early. This is why, all things being equal, I believe the eagles will look at OL or LB in the 3rd round.

I definitely want to draft our future right tackle this year but in fairness, evan mathis came here as a one year band aid himself

  283. 283 solid said at 3:37 PM on April 29th, 2016:

If he ends up performing really well and decides to stick around, then that would be ideal, yes. Still need that RT, like you said.

  284. 284 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:49 PM on April 29th, 2016:

We could use talent at every position with the exception of QB and TE. If we haven’t noticed we don’t have an ideal amount of picks this year. It’s more urgent that we get a OT. Probably a decent chance that the OT we draft is cable of playing Guard. Unfortunately we won’t be able to address all our needs in this draft

  285. 285 Fufina said at 3:53 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I still say so much of our OL problems were based on Chips scheme. They never did anything to help their interior offensive line if they were struggling. Leaving your backup G (who is probably a weak backup) 1v1 vs Suh/McCoy with no support is madness. Schematically they never adjusted to protect their OL. in 2013 with the line fit and playing at an elite level there was no weak point to exploit, but as soon as our interior line got weakened opposing D coordinators went to town attacking up the middle to disrupt the run game and basically shut down the entire offence. Our pass defense was ‘fine’ in 2015, our run game could not get going north to south and that destroyed Murray’s ability to run effectively.

Doug/Andy/West Coast offences have a range of tools to help protect an offensive lineman who is over matched in some match ups and is specifically designed to replace some run production with passes to help mitigate and slow down run defense. I think we will be ‘fine’ in 2016. Do we need RT and LG of the future? for sure but that can happen in 2016 draft, 2017 FA, 2017 draft or a player emerging as a quality starter.

  286. 286 RobNE said at 4:11 PM on April 29th, 2016:

you could delete OL from that first sentence.

  287. 287 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:37 PM on April 29th, 2016:

There is always a possibly that say we get to a round 7 pick, and Guard with a 5th round grade is still available, in that case, pull the trigger even if we have a bigger need somewhere else

  288. 288 Steve Smegal said at 2:38 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I’d rather use the pick on someone that projects to be a future RT but is capable of sliding inside to guard this year if necessary. Kill two birds with one pick.

  289. 289 Rambo said at 3:23 PM on April 29th, 2016:

“Kill two birds with one pick”—-No pun intended?

  290. 290 Steve Smegal said at 2:37 PM on April 29th, 2016:

There is no reason to draft based on position. Just take the best player available out of the many positions we could use depth at. There will be a DT available later if necessary.

  291. 291 Gian GEAGLE said at 2:53 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Yup, lucky for us we are in a draft where there will probably a DT near the top of the board Everytime we pick. Im expecting to draft a DT tonight and tomorrow, but we’ll see…

  292. 292 Steve Smegal said at 2:56 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I think you’re overstating the need for DT. We definitely could use another one. No doubt. But remember that on passing downs, I fully expect Curry to move inside and lineup Barwin, Curry, Cox, Graham.

  293. 293 Gian GEAGLE said at 3:34 PM on April 29th, 2016:

“We def could use another one”???
    Talk about an understatement..
    .
    1) don’t have a single player on this roster that can be counted on to backup Cox at 3Tec…..what other position can you say that about. cox is only 3tec on our Roster.
    .
    2) we need all new backups at DT because of scheme change
    ..
    3) pointless to hire Schwartz if you aren’t going to build him one of the top DL’s in the game, 4 deep at DE and DT rotating in each game.
    .
    4) all the other backups we can draft DONT play unless starter gets hurt, backüp DT needs to play even when starters are healthy
    .
    5) Cox is the only above average interior pass rushing DT we have which isn’t enough for a Schwartz defense, the rest are more run stuffers than pass rushers

Even if we go DT at 79 we won’t be done building that position for the scheme change….just look at the Panthers. Two starting Studs at DT and they still invested their first round pick in the position…
    ..
I wish it wasn’t this much of a need, unfortunately we can’t assume practice Squad kids like Raciti can play.

  294. 294 Steve Smegal said at 3:38 PM on April 29th, 2016:

How could the words “we definitely need another one” be an understatement that we, in fact, need another one?

The only disagreement we have is if we MUST get one at 79. I almost hope we do just to not have to hear your constant whining for months after if we don’t.

You can say the same thing about the LB corp. We can’t assume Hicks or Kendricks stay on the field the whole year. We can’t count on Long, Hepburn, Skinner, and Goode.

  297. 297 Steve Smegal said at 3:43 PM on April 29th, 2016:

    BEST:
    * Norm Van Brocklin, ’57-’60. Won the Eagles last NFL title.
    * Tommy Thompson, ’40-’50. Won the Eagles other 2 NFL titles.

    WORST:
    * Rick Arrington, ’70-’72.
Best career start: 3 for 10, 16 yds, 0 TD, 3 INTS (1 rtd for TD)

    In between . . .
*John Walton (dazzled on road in Dallas in ’79 MNF tilt won by Birds)
    *Trent Edwards (forgettable)
    *Tim Hasselbeck (ditto)
    *Jay Fiedler (ditto)
    *Mark Rypien (double ditto)

    Anders . . .

    You’re right, of course.

There were 4 owners before Lurie.

Retiring numbers, though, has become more commonplace in the past 20-25 years.

(Seems like Rings of Honor have sprung up all over the NFL.)

That’s the premise of my comment.

I think Lurie isnt as concerned with anything Eagles related before his time is because 99% of the fans do not care.

Outside of Bednarik, nobody really remembers early Eagles players anymore.

People always talk of Reid and McNabb as the the best coach and QB in Eagles history when I think Greasy Neale and Norm are the two best for many reasons.

  322. 322 RobNE said at 2:39 PM on April 29th, 2016:

    from Andy Benoit:

If you think Sam Bradford is peeved now, wait for when the end of training camp rolls around and new head coach Doug Pederson names Wentz his starter. If you talk to Wentz and study him closely, you’ll have a very difficult time envisioning him learning from the bench as a rookie. There’d be no point in sitting the 23-year-old. As Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock, Greg Cosell and countless others inside the NFL have said: This is the most pro-ready QB to enter the league since Andrew Luck. Keep in mind, Bradford has been a middling NFL quarterback and will be learning a mostly new system just like Wentz will. This will begin as an inherently equal QB competition. And all ties would go to the youngster

  323. 323 SteveH said at 2:42 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Good, I hope Bradford pouts his way into massive amounts of fines.

  324. 324 anon said at 2:46 PM on April 29th, 2016:

All of those guys literally don’t know dick, the whole complex is to yeast QBs up so they go in the top of the draft b/c people love that come draft time. Wentz may be good mentally, though is he better than Winston? Does he have a better arm than Mariota? He’s got mechanical issues and has just never played against the level of talent or had to make full field reads. Yes he could have intangibles to help you win games but i doubt you’d see that in september.

  325. 325 ChoTime said at 2:49 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Wow, this is some idiotic writing.

“Countless others inside the NFL” have said he’s the most pro-ready QB since Luck? Hyperbole much? Did Benoit have an accident and lose some of his fingers? Does that mean “infinite commentors” have said Goff was the pro-ready?

Benoit sees no benefit from him sitting and watching? Really? It didn’t help the guys who did it, or hurt the parade of highly-touted prospects who got ground into the dirt as young players? Putting a rook behind a porous OL and with shitty receivers isn’t going to bother the young man?

I mean going from East Bumble__k to the NFL is no big deal at all? Bradford who’s actually played QB in the NFL for two different teams, and won the pre-season championship won’t have advantage in the early stages?

    Sheesh!!

Pederson wants there to be zero pressure and zero expectations of Wentz starting any game this year. He has accomplished that. But I hope that if Wentz exceeds expectations in learning the system and in the preseason, that Pederson is at least open to the idea of Wentz starting game 1, even if Pederson only mentions this to a few other coaches. Wilson had no pressure to start game 1 but just out performed the other QBs so was correctly allowed to start.

Top 5 possibilities in Rd 3 IMO(in no particular order):

    Alex Lewis, OT, Nebraska
Javon Hargrave, DT, South Carolina State
    Paul Perkins, RB, UCLA
    Nick Kwiatkoski, LB, West Virginia
    Kolby Listenbee, WR, Texas Christian

  400. 400 myartz04 said at 4:03 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Has Pederson come right out and said “our rookie qb is going to sit on the bench for x amount of time”? I don’t know why everyone thinks Wentz is just going to sit the bench for the hell of it. If he’s the best QB…he playing. It’s as simple as that. If he’s not, then he will sit until he is.

  401. 401 RobNE said at 4:07 PM on April 29th, 2016:

when they made the trade, they started off the presser by saying SB is the starting QB

  402. 402 myartz04 said at 4:10 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Isnt that them trying to keep what ever small leverage that they think they have alive in the hopes of a trade? They certainly aren’t going to come out and say “Welp, got our QB…any takers for Bradford? “

  403. 403 anon said at 4:11 PM on April 29th, 2016:

That’s what rams are trying to do.

They’ve said all along that rookie will sit and learn. You can’t start Wentz in this city, i think he’s a talented kid that’s a bit of a project. Gotta work out the mechanics first.

  404. 404 myartz04 said at 4:13 PM on April 29th, 2016:

But what if he’s ready? What if he’s the best qb in camp? Still going to sit him?

  405. 405 RobNE said at 4:14 PM on April 29th, 2016:

nope but I think that’s unlikely. Can’t wait for the camp reports, Wentz is KILLING it on 6 on 6!!! After last year I don’t believe anything I see in preseason.

  406. 406 myartz04 said at 4:15 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I mean I’m all for sitting him….but only if he needs it.

  407. 407 anon said at 4:15 PM on April 29th, 2016:

If he’s the best qb in camp he should play. I have a very hard time believing he’d be better than chase or sam.

  408. 408 myartz04 said at 4:16 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I happen to agree with that, I just don’t buy the notion that he’s sitting no matter what.

  409. 409 b3nz0z said at 4:18 PM on April 29th, 2016:

yeah maybe. we aren’t going anywhere this year and the nfl is littered with talented kids that got thrown in the fire before it was time.

  410. 410 unhinged said at 4:32 PM on April 29th, 2016:

My impression is that there are more than a few QB coaches in the league who are loathe to start a rookie QB prematurely. There is a precedent for the argument that a potential starter can be “ruined”. They see stages of development that cannot be skipped over, and Pederson has not publicly voiced that opinion, but between AR, HR, Doug and Frank and the Eagles QB coach, it seems likely that the argument has some merit. Particularly when the rookie has played so little college ball, and at a small school.

  411. 411 RobNE said at 4:13 PM on April 29th, 2016:

maybe but then they would have traded him, no? I think they actually believe what they said.

  412. 412 myartz04 said at 4:14 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I think they thought they’d have more takers for Bradford.

  413. 413 Fufina said at 4:18 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Sam is going to talk the 1st team reps on the 1st day of camp (if he is not traded). After that it will depend on how the QB’s look in camp and preseason. The Eagles do not need to force Wentz to start in 2016 and if they look at him at the start of camp and evaluate he needs to improve his core mechanics and understanding of scheme and NFL defences to succeed plan to shut him down the year as the 3rd QB and get him focused on fixing those issues.

If he comes in and looks technically sound enough (there can be a lot of improvement in the 8 months from Jan to September with pro coaching in the pre and post draft process.) and he is picking up the scheme well then he is going to be starting some time in 2016 unless Bradford comes out and play at a probowl level.

  414. 414 Tumtum said at 5:22 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I really hope it plays out like that. No fluff. No real leash. Start the guy with the highest chance to win now. Take advantage of this defense. Win the division then who knows what.

Everyone of course low-key wants Wentz (not not so low-key I dunno) to be the best from day 1. Just not bloody likely.

  415. 415 anon said at 6:05 PM on April 29th, 2016:

    Not everyone.

  416. 416 Cafone said at 4:24 PM on April 29th, 2016:

It’s an interesting question. It took Bradford half a season to learn Chip Kelly’s tiny playbook and now he’s going to skip optional activities where he could be learning Pederson’s offense? And Wentz who is supposedly very smart and a quick learner is going to be in those meetings learning the offense?

I’d like to see Wentz brought along cautiously, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he knows the offense better than Bradford by opening day.

  417. 417 Mr. Magee said at 4:33 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Doens’t mean he’ll play, but I completely agree with you

  418. 418 anon said at 4:40 PM on April 29th, 2016:

There’s a difference between skipping voluntary workouts and not being able to practice at all until august.

Sam surely has playbook access and has been learning it since dougy p was hired. I’m sure he’ll come back to practice after the draft and there’s no trade opportunity.

  419. 419 Gian GEAGLE said at 4:54 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Think he will be back way before mandatory camp anyway..
    ..
Before the draft he can try to force the Eagles to accept a lowball offer, but once the draft ends, he won’t have much to gain by continuing to hold out. And every day that passes he gets closure to the point where he only hurts himself, while letting Wentz get way more reps than he would be getting if Sam came to work… I would think his agent is smarter than to have Bradford continue this hold out much longer after the draft ends

It sure feels great to get to see what Bradford can do in year 2 as an eagle without having to worry or care about the possibility of getting hurt. Awesome that dirty cowboy fans still don’t have that luxury with Fragile Romo

  420. 420 Media Mike said at 4:25 PM on April 29th, 2016:

So we gave Gardner money to be our starter last year, before an injury. If you ask Todd Herramens guard is interchangeable. Was that just a giant blunder? He currently has the 55th guard cap number (which has Osemel at the top so really 54th) in the league.

If he is just an “OK” back up, he is a waste of money. I thought we were all behind him as the answer at guard last season. Wa happen?

  454. 454 Media Mike said at 5:14 PM on April 29th, 2016:

They can’t defend anybody. I don’t see adding a RB to a team that already scores a lot of points with their starting QB playing a move that gets them over the top.

The had to cheat to beat Detroit in the wild card round two years ago, and their D has regressed since then.

Yet, if you’re looking to gain extra pick or two, there are few players on the roster that might actually have league-wide value to do that. Now, Barwin is maybe my favorite Eagle, but despite what he’s said so far there’s at least a slim chance that Schwartz doesn’t view him as a great fit at DE.

  505. 505 Media Mike said at 5:39 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I did that a few days ago in a “think aloud” and talked myself out of it for this year, but only because Curry’s cap hit is $3 mil.

  565. 565 Dave said at 6:47 PM on April 29th, 2016:

This quote by Brady Quinn on PFT is spot on…

“He came into the league being a guy who got paid $60 million to be a starting quarterback and to play and really didn’t have to deal with any sort of competition throughout his career because economically he was paid so much,” Quinn said. “I think he finds himself now in a situation where that’s what he comes to expect and that’s all he knows. He’s never had to necessarily grind it out and compete against someone else on the roster.”

“So he signs a new contract and he’s thinking, ‘Alright, I’m the guy for this team for at least the next couple years.’ He feels like, ‘Well, I don’t have to deal with worrying about the second overall pick in the first round to compete with and hear the fans clamor for him the second that I throw an interception, the second I end up playing bad.’ He’s never had to adjust to that before in his career, so he doesn’t know how to deal with it and he wants to go somewhere where he feels like he can be the guy. He probably feels that way because he had his best statistical season last year for the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though he hasn’t been healthy for 16 games throughout his career he still wants to be the guy. He still thinks he has the ability to be the guy so he’s just looking for that opportunity. So you could see why he would feel that way, unfortunately that’s just not the position that he’s in anymore in the NFL. It’s not like he’s the first pick overall coming in the draft, like a Jared Goff, who has some time to prove himself. He now has to prove himself even among his own roster and his own quarterback room.”

  566. 566 anon said at 6:53 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Do you remember when people (including myself) were clamoring for sanchez last year? Team got booed plenty last year. If he played poorly he’d get booed and benched even if it was him an chase. That’s Philly.

Even if he plays well has another career year he’s likely gone. That probably made denver job enticing. That job is gone, there’s no one else that wants him. I think he’ll step up to the plate and show the young buck.

  567. 567 RobNE said at 7:00 PM on April 29th, 2016:

I think he isn’t getting much slack because he could have done a deal with Denver in Denver’s price range. But he took a much better with us knowing it’s a short one year prove it deal. He made the bed. I get that it is slightly different b/c the chances of him playing well and staying here in the same system are lower than before, but his overall status on a prove it deal did not change.

Agree eagles paid him more not to hit FA, but no one thought the deal was outrageous when signed, fair prove it deal for a guy that ended the year pretty well.

  569. 569 RobNE said at 7:05 PM on April 29th, 2016:

understatement yes but when you compare it to the chances of him actually playing like a franchise QB and getting a long term deal, his odds of sticking around really didn’t drop that much. 20% to now 8%?

  570. 570 RobNE said at 7:07 PM on April 29th, 2016:

Right I do think it was fair not outrageous, but he knew Denver wouldn’t pay near that, so I think some of us are ticked that now it’s like oh sure I want to play for the defending SB champs but only b/c I locked in a higher salary with the Eagles. Choose what is important to you, and stick by it.

anyway, I’ve moved on to Wentz. I do really hope SB plays well this year, for him and us too.

Ramsey and Jack for the Jags. That team is going to be scary if Jack gets back to 100%

Ramsey and Jack is a hell of a draft from the Jags. That is a A+ draft if they only draft kickers and punters from here.

When you draft in the top 5 every year, you eventually can build something (unless you’re Cleveland). When you miss the playoffs and still draft 20th, you tread water.

[ɜː], [ɝː] curve, purge, herd, serve, bird, stir

Don’t confuse the symbol with [ɛ]. [ɜː] is pronounced the same as [əː] in some dialects while it is slightly “darker” in others, and many dictionaries don’t use it at all and write simply [əː]. The difference between [ɜː] and [ɝː] is the same as between [ə] and [ɚ]. The former is used chiefly in British English, the latter chiefly in American English (listen to the recordings). Dictionaries which denote [ɜː] as [əː] would denote [ɝː] as [əːr]. In writing, [ɜː] and [ɝː] are usually represented by the letter groups “ur”, “er”, or “ir”.
