Halftime – PHI 13, WAS 7
Posted: December 11th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 401 Comments »The Eagles are playing much better today. The offense has moved up and down the field. The defense limited the high-flying Skins offense to 112 yards and 7 points. Caleb Sturgis has nailed 2 FGs and Donnie Jones hasn’t had to punt. Good 1st half.
Not perfect, though.
Carson Wentz is having one of his best games of the year, but he did throw a Red Zone INT. He also failed to connect with a wide open Trey Burton for what would have been a long TD. The run game is 13-37 so far. You’d like a bit more production.
The defense really has only had one bad play, when they gave up a 22-yard TD run to Rob Kelley. They gave up some plays here and there, but that’s part of football. You never stop the other team every single down. The Skins haven’t scored less than 23 points since October. Their offense is explosive and productive. The Eagles D is limiting their effectiveness. The Eagles offense is being methodical and running sustained drives that keep Kirk Cousins on the sidelines.
Good team football.
Keep it up and the losing streak will come to an end.

In the meantime Brandon Brooks just gave birth..
Yea this needs an explanation
Need a stop here and keep the momentum.
Yeah everyone’s back onboard! Nice to be happy for a moment
big cox in his face
fcuking flag
coX!!
Players wanted to shut the media up and they did. First time both sides of the ball showed to play from the outset since the Steelers’ game.
Good sign for Pederson too.
gtfo out of here with that call
“there’s a flag though” – ugh
Effin Ertz
Entz Entz Entz…
frikkin Treebeard knows not to block in the back
bs call, dude dove in front of him and ertz had his hands up
well at least he blocked someone….but really looked like that dude fell…
Kelce beat bad
It’s PT Cruiser time…
Gonna give ertz some credit today for breaking a couple tackles.
his YAC on the season has jumped from 3 to 19 today. It’s a big step forward for him.
Gah, protection guys protection.
i still hate chris baker
such dumb play calling. New Linebacker? Hit him with that wheel route. Obviously they’re going to blitz how was their no hot read?
I wonder what it would be like to have a line that could provide decent run blocking and pass protection.
how many cornerbacks can we get in one offseason
we just need to get djax off their team.
we could hold open tryouts and improve at cb
That was McKelvin right? He clearly still has hamstring issues. I know we would all like new cbs but right now, Id settle for a healthy one.
It was only a matter of time
Every year he hits us with one.
Hes auditioning
I would take DeSean back in a heartbeat, and I honestly can’t understand why you wouldn’t.
#culture
lol. Thanks, Chip.
Depends on the $$$. He’s better than any of the receivers we have but not worth a top-10 contract.
All he does is catch touchdowns
Man, Chip Kelly was so smart to get rid of DeSean Jackson and replace him with Jordan Matthews. Culture is so much important than talent.
Who’s our back up long snapper?
Celek I believe
Compton on the sideline and the guy with gang ties scores a TD.
Coincidence? Maybe.
Actually, yes. Completely a coincidence. Carry on.
PT with the drop..
he suxxxxxxxx
Inconceivable.
Cut turner
OPI….
thought i saw a flag….
Love Hate Ertz
*entz
Solid starter who has really improved his blocking but isn’t a dynamic TE or a real threat either including in the red zone.
Still don’t understand why he gets so much angst. This team has much bigger issues including value for the production they get out of contracts.
we going for it?
When it comes to meaningless December games playing out the string for a losing team, Zach Ertz is the greatest tight end of all time.
He does wrack up a lot of stats in 1-2 games a year which help to pad his numbers.
So, Tobin isn’t an extra lineman. Barbe is out?
Whats up with Dorenbos?
Wrist injury
Thanks, missed it.
uh oh
classic
Not a surprise
now why cant kelce long snap in a pinch…?
It’s not the same thing. You have to spin the long snap
I don’t see why he can’t learn to tho
understood but if anyone on the team should have able to sub in, it should be him…
stupid challenge
Schwartz’s defense has been MIA for a month now.
so has pederson’s offense
Yes but that part has been well documented. Pederson and the offense have been getting ripped to shreds by the media and the fans, Schwartz and the D have not.
No defense huh?????
the field goal is sad…
Wentz doesn’t seem to being able to make any sort of throw into a defense if it’s not his first read, unless it’s right in front of him. He doesn’t seem to be able to really read a defense…
If only we had Joe Webb
Wouldn’t have cost as much, and we’d have more wins, I suspect. And we could have waited for a more serious QB prospect.
low key, Chip should have gotten that Mariota trade done.
cut him. Let’s get dak instead
Because guys are running free all game, right? Or is there something else that makes you criticize him?
you shut your mouf
Wentz has looked good though.
Holding
Logan got away with one there
so did the redskins o line
first time ive heard vinny curry’s name in weeks
at least try would ya?
These CBs are such garbage
straight garbage.
They are, and opposing teams have figured out that Schwartz’s scheme constantly putting them in single coverage makes that situation worse.
Need cbs more than WR at this point…
I think they need both equally.
Maybe today’s the day Wentz gets his comeback
Nope
Worst part of this is that sucking down the stretch doesn’t help our draft position – it just gives the Browns a higher first round pick to blow.
helps in every other round
Vikes are losing to the jags currently
Hey, we found another thing Nelson Agholor sucks at! I didn’t think it was possible.
MIN losing tho
Things an Eagles fan can look forward for the rest of the season: Vikings losses. Turner catches
zombie apocalypse
I stepped out to get some pizza, nice to see we blew a field goal and gave up a TD drive.
so its your fault….
*sobs uncontrollably*
blew a kick off return too
What kind?
A punt snap will be interesting
Lol
uh oh
I’m sick of that shotgun draw play.
washington wrist hunting.
Not his wrist. It’s his neck, probably a stinger down his arm
I dont live in the Penn area but have seen commercials for Rutters. Any good?
So their dude just got a 15yd penalty for taking out our only remaining long snapper. GG rules.
love our CBs.
Thats a start
Lol @ Kirk Cousins’ “franchise QB” impersonation.
Hes playing pretty well overall.
Throwing at Josh Norman. Not smart.
good thing we were going for 2 anyway I guess
The slowest out throw, ever…
He has to work on his mechanics this offseason for sure.
YEah bitch!
Norman made contact early.
always
I was wondering that too. Pretty close play IMO
Meh. It was a good play
someone teach kelce how to long snap now
And make it his permanent position
A little sick of watching our defense make Rob Kelley look like Earl Campbell.
it’s the OL
Four broken tackles on every run is due to the OL?
not sure thats in.
didnt get the second foot down
DEF NOT CATCH
take it to the bank
Doug’s challenge losing streak is going to come to end.
That was not a catch.
then by the law of inverse refereeing decisions, this will stand
done with challenges tho sigh
Wow
We won one
eject that mofo
fuck the redskins
I love that Jason Peters is out there ready to kill someone
get that guy the fuck out of here.
thats a second personal foul, he should be gone
Kill Him
Ertz trying to look hard is hilarious though
Take the next shot they have at Cousins. That’ll teach them.
sproles still down…shit
he should be fucking ejected
abso fucking lutely. second PF for hits to the head
he’ll be recieving a healthy fine
Way to go Kelce
lets go guys, show some heart.
Wentz. Gotta learn to just chuck it away, kid.
So mobile, but we’re not good at gettign open in a scramble apparently. Need to watch some seahawks video tape. I guess having Bradford here you’re not used to extending plays.
entz with some gusto today
burton running backwards trying to get his block…
expected wentz to get destroyed.
The combination of discontinuity on the OL and bad receiver play has just killed our offense.
QB sneak.
Gotta get this
qb sneak
Cmon guys
Mike Bartrum is only 46.
F it. Wentz can long snap.
we looking at field goal, my stream just went to shit
sports psycology ftw
Agholor looking much better tpday
so close
Fipp sez he will do it
dear lord baby jesus…
Why can’t Kelce do it?
I was wondering same
Seems like a no brained to me. What am I missing here?!
a long snap has to spin a certain way, apparently
So wouldn’t Kelce be better at it than Burton? The announcers aren’t even suggesting it. Wtf?!
Wow wow wow
TREY FTW
Burton!!! Donnie JOnes!!!
Have never gotten more excited about a FG in my life
Mark Simoneau? Akers on one leg?
can we have open tryouts for CB too? seems to work
Screw that, just let Burton do it.
lol that burton didnt move or try to block after the snap, just watched it the entire time.
He is lucky he didn’t get crushed.
this game man
Let’s go Schwartz. Time to show up.
nice hit
Look at our DBs making plays today.
our stupid dbs not diving on it.
So the punt returner, kick returner, and long snapper are all out?
And our special teams are still a strength?
Think this might be overturned. That looked like a “football move” to me.
Agreed, but they owe us one. No catch.
Stands. They don’t overturn judgment calls very often
In slow motion. I gotta think it would stand if our guy caught it.
I don’t think “football move” is in the guidelines anymore — something like forward progression. That one is definitely arguable. I would have expected “call stands” — the ref said “number of steps” but I thought the number was closer to 1 — but natch that goes against us.
Well, 1 is a number…
Catch. Fumble. Recovered.
Ridiculous
Ive seen this game before.
I would love to know how Dez’a catch in the playoffs is incomplete but that is a catch
Time for a pick
hickssss
go for the FG!!!
how the FUCK did they get a TO
cllocks at DOUBLE FUCKING ZERO
Game over
Dam it
need a sack
This feels exaxtly like the game from last year
Another gruelling loss. Are we a good team? Without a pick 6 we’re looking at 15-21 against a bad defense.
I thought we would get blown up
Without the pick six.
You could say without… and list a few things that would had us winning too.
without the end zone pick? We can net the run back and the pick 6 i guess.
Should have put Burton on Garçon.
Well, that’s one way to save time on the clock.
probably the best thing that could have happened.
urlacherzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I prefer that
rather have that then bleed the clock out
ok wentz FTW
OK. Carson. Here’s your opportunity to be a hero.
Okay Wentz… crunch time. Let’s see what you got.
His time to shine
That is better than bleeding the clock and kicking the FG.
Move!!!
If he plays up on Ags, Ags has to get behind him.
mathews our only RB right now right?
Yep. Barner inactive
Where’s Smallwood?
injured
TINE OUT
Broken fork
glad they didnt get cute with the TO
Bad week to give up huffing glue
11 to 81
lets see that same play to matthews that he dropped the first time
* wentz missed
That was holding on wis
crap
Of course
well thats that.
didnt even touch kerrigan.
Holy shit…… Sorry Carson, your line sucks a fatty.
Lots of injuries to the right side of the line. Brooks was out, then Barbre got hurt.
Story of the season. Hardly any running game again today….
I’m mad Pederson kept running roll-outs to that side. But this is a lost season, so I stopped caring.
Same here. Need more good players.
How do you not run a play away from Kerrigan or screen to that side or have an extra blocker – that’s thier only pass rusher and he’s up against a nobody.
thanks a lot lane.
when’s he due back?
19th
Will be interesting to see if they look significantly better with him back on the field in the last two games of the year. We need him to go back home to Texas and not do anything stupid this offseason.
be interesting to see if this team doesn’t rollover next week. Demoralizing loss
They played a lot better today. Not well enough, but they didn’t totally suck like the last few weeks.
it was only the Deadskins though
They might end up as a playoff team. I’m not blown away by them, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not like we lost to one of the worst teams in the NFL.
They showed more today than I thought they would
I tuned back in just to see that fumble…
*sigh*
I know Smallwood went out with an injury but 46 pass attempts in this game for Wentz. Too many especially with only 15 carries for Mathews.
I blame Lane Johnson for everything.
He has to go high on the list of goats for the season. The offensive line play significantly deteriorated after he went out and that caused the rest of the offense to regress as well.
Outside of QB, we literally cannot go wrong if drafting an offense position with the Vikings pick.
dont underestimate us.
We need CB or OL I think as top 2. I used to think WR, but I think that’s 3rd worse over these last few weeks.
Johnson coming back and Vaitai and Seumalo maturing should hopefully shore up the OL a bit. CB and WR are just pure trash with the only guys we have on the roster who might be a part of the future (Matthews and Mills) ideally being #2 or #3 types rather than starters. Also, I love drafting OL but this is not a strong class, whereas there are a lot of good CB and WR prospects. Also some terrific RBs – if somebody like McCaffrey or Fournette is on the board I’d be hard-pressed to pass on him for a mediocre OL.
cudda had both Tunsil and Joe Webb, you know…
Hahahah I know you’re joking but I’m fine with Wentz. He is not perfect, he still has things to learn and has mechanical flaws to work on – he drops the ball too low and his windup is too long – but he has all the talent in the world. I can see now why they originally planned to sit him this season but I think trading up to get him was the right move. I LOVED Tunsil as a prospect but a guy who’s a potential top 5 QB is more valuable even than a potential top 5 LT.
Team is really high on Gordon.
What a depressing loss – you can see it on the player’s faces. Going to be a long rest of the season. Wentz….dissapointing we haven’t seen this team comeback in the 4 quarter in a LONG time.
Hard to get one when Rbs drop passes and your butthole gets .2 s3conds after the snap.
Man… That was shit effort by Tobin, I mean at least delay Kerrigan a beat so Wentz can get the ball out.
Tobin is not a good player. There’s a reason he went undrafted and is a career backup. He wouldn’t even have been active if Johnson hadn’t gotten suspended and Vaitai gotten hurt. I can’t be too hard on a 3rd string fringe roster player for playing like a 3rd string fringe roster player.
Yeah but, cmon man, you can at least get a hand on the guy. At least give us a chance to throw the ball away.
Look he is not an ambi-turner man. He can turn left no problem at all and he is a decent player – but damn it he just cannot turn right.
Ehhh. I think he’s a below average LT/LG and a far below average RT. Ideally he’s never on the field during a regular season game.
/sigh post was a joke… too few people have seen zoolander
Yeah that’s one I missed. And it’s not because I don’t love early to mid oughts Ben Stiller movies, Dodgeball, Anchorman, Tropic Thunder, and Meet the Parents were all right up my alley.
Its a great really stupid movie if that makes sense. whole thing is nonsensical and utterly over the top but you laugh at the movie as well as with the movie. Is a good film to watch when you are brain dead tired but want a bit of a pick me up.
No complaints today. This team came out from the outset, played hard, and competed to the end of the game. That is about all you can ask right now.
Wentz had some accuracy issues again today but had a nice bounce back too. I had Reid deja vu though with too many passing attempts in a game this close.
I don’t care about the pass attempts this game. Everything else I agree with
Also of note: Ryan Mathews was awful in pass pro a couple times today.
that’s why we have sproles
this is a bad team!
I think the players have pretty much quit on the season.
Bad – yes. Quit – Not today. This is a team with its share of wholes and had a few more offensive injuries today.
It is absurd to say that the players quit. They fought hard this entire game and seemed very passionate. This is not a good team, but the players did not quit today.
Hah, the Cardinals just did a stupid, called timeout with 2:04 before a punt. Clock stops on a punt anyhow ya stupids.
McKelvin is the closest living representation to an Eagles’ CB I have seen to Izell ‘Toast’ Jenkins.
He LOVES to jump on routes and guess. Every know and then this season he comes up big or with a nice play like today but man he gets beat like a drum an awful lot too.
If he has given up the most passing play for 20+ yards this season or in the Top 3, I would be pretty surprised
Hard to hate on that loss with the mash unit that was out there. I do hate that the Vikings didn’t choke against the Jaguars, that would have been awesome.
Props to Trey Burton today. *cracks a beer*
hope it’s malt liquor need something strong.
Pederson needs to come out firing a bit in the press conference and not let the Philly media turn in him into a punching bag this week. Team played pretty well all things considered and bounced back from last week’s debacle even if they lost.
Of course, some fans booed at times today and the media will be all over the Eagles. It is 100% complete BS that this team appreciates effort too if the team is losing. Their bitch and complain especially Eagles’ fans
Go home Bob, you’re drunk.
They booed today including in the 4th qtr after the play where Kerrigan sacked and stripped Wentz.
Philly is very much a ‘what have you done for me lately’ city in sports, politics, and even business.
that’s nothing new. I can understand the booing, what a let down.
I was referring more to the pretty much incomprehensible sentence structure towards the end there.
Corrected and no drinking.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that *sips beer*.
The upside of being a shitty team is getting draft picks, we need them.
Miami going to playoffs? can’t believe it.
yea. Who gets our #1?
Cleveland.
Our 2 could be top 40.
This is a fair point. I know you’re a big draftnik – I only loosely follow college football so my grasp on these things is tenuous. I know it’s a good draft for CBs and RBs and bad for OL – any read on how things shake out between mid-first and mid-second in terms of talent distribution? Is this one of those years where there’s not really a dropoff between prospect #20 and prospect #50?
Hard to tell at this point with juniors not declared yet… but i think it is a great RB and defensive draft, really deep at CB and LB.
I think they can get a CB who will be a pretty good starter by year two and a WR who brings a dynamic element to the offense with the first two picks.
There should also be options at pass rusher especially early.
RB you can wait until 3rd-4th round and still get a really good back.
Probably to early to have a feel for just how the board falls but there will be a impact player at a position of need when we pick in the second.
Good news. This might be a year when the Eagles needs and the talent pool actually line up for once. If we draft a CB and a WR with our top two picks (in some order) I’ll be very happy.
I think we also need a RB though it’s not as high of a priority and the only way I’d take one in the first round is if a no-doubt stud was available and the options at other positions were all clearly inferior players. Unless it’s a guy like Zeke RBs are pretty fungible.
The upside to losing this game, is that is makes it more likely that Minnesota will miss the playoffs, which gives us a higher #1 pick.
Jackson continues to play well vs Eagles including doing most of his damage via big plays.
5 games – 20 rec, 440 yards, 2 TDs including today
Whelp. Dougy Simpleton’s offense only came up with 13 points on 4 1st half trips in the red zone. Let a terrible defense own them today. But its what I’ve come to expect from Doug.
He was coaching a team with a mishmash of backup OL playing out of position and which has very little skill position talent to begin with and lost its best offensive weapon in the 2nd half. They still moved the ball fine.
I realize one note criticism of Pederson is your thing and some weeks you can at least make an argument for holding him at fault. This is not one of those weeks.
Does he call the plays? Is he the architect of the offense? How many offensive points did they score? The responsibility for continued offensive failure lies with him.
I mean he didn’t force Wentz to throw that interception. So on the other 3 trips we scored 13. That’s not awful.
I keep telling you this, and you keep refusing to listen. When you have a shitty offensive line that can’t hold up against a decent pass rush and can’t consistently open holes in the running game, a shitty receiving corps that almost never makes contested catches and leads the league in drops, and a shitty RB corps that fumbles too much, blows blitz pickup assignments, drops screen passes, and rarely or never breaks off big runs, and all of these units are penalized at a near league-leading clip, it’s hard to be a playcalling genius. Pederson’s playcalling this season hasn’t been perfect – he’s made some really questionable decisions like that screen pass against Dallas that lost 6 yards. But he’s also made some excellent calls, and overall I consider playcalling to be far, far down on the list of reasons why this offense has struggled.
Good coaches coach their players up. Doug coaches them down.
Not as shitty as he usually is is still shitty.
Pederson HAS coached them up. Statistically they are a middle-of-the-pack offense. Talentwise they are bottom 5.
Why do you waste your time responding to this troll?
Just stating my opinion. I wish he was better. He isn’t, and thats going to impact the franchise negatively for a few years.
Good question.
Absolutely agree – I think his good game plans have exceeded his bad ones, and that is pretty impressive with this set of offensive skill position players and a mauled offensive line. He is a rookie play caller and generally i think he has done a good job – is there room for improvement? absolutely, but it is not a long term concern for me at this point.
Vikings won today
There was plenty to criticize Doug for. He has not shown to be a good play caller so far. Look at the many 3rd and shorts today.
Some questionable calls there although today is a tough day to harp on Pederson’s play calling.
I still thought there was only 2 games this year where his overall offensive play-calling was really bad – first Giants game and first Skins game.
First Giants’ game was one of the worst coached games by an Eagles team I can remember in recent memory. Questionable decision after questionable decision including being hyper aggressive to the point of outright foolishness.
The bigger issue should Pederson been calling the plays this year from the outset – I would argue ‘no’ and if they should delegate that to Reich next year – I would argue ‘yes’ although less definite on that.
Its hard to be creative when you need to leave extra people in to block. Most pass downs we have got 6 or 7 in blocking at least initially (RB or TE may leak out for a check down if there is no one for them to pick up).
That means you are leaving 3 or 4 receivers (WR’s and TE’s) trying to get open against 6-7 defenders – and with our lack of talent at outside WR and a rookie QB there really is only so much you can do.
Offence was innovative and creative early in the year when they were happy leaving Johnson/Peters 1v1 on the outside all game, flooded zones with multiple routes and allowed Wentz to execute simple reads depending on presnap defensive formation.
Eagles weren’t that bad coming into today – 19th in red zone efficiency at 53.6%.
That has been an issue for a long, long time here though and the only year they were really dynamic in the red zone was the SB year in 2004 – 4th (62.3%). TO, TO, TO.
Otherwise they tended to be middle to bottom third-tier Reid’s entire tenure here and weren’t great including any single year with Kelly either (13th in ’13, 25th in ’14, 15th in ’15)
I think slightly below average red zone efficiency is actually an achievement given how terrible the talent on this team outside of Wentz (who is a rookie) is. They don’t have a single skill position guy who you’d really fear in the red zone as an opposing defensive coach and their line has been below average due to injuries and suspensions.
Agreed especially if you considering the weapons he has or doesn’t have. There isn’t a single one in the red zone teams have to worry about.
I thought it was funny 2 weeks ago how Ertz was irritated about how overall production especially in the red zone since he arrived here. He basically gave a passive aggressive response including about how the offensive staff haven’t called more plays for him in the red zone.
Maybe it is because inside the 10 they can stick a LB on you and don’t have to worry about either out muscling or blowing the guy area.
I do think red zone efficiency is a real issue for Reid’s playing calling though. During his tenure here they averaged 21st or 22nd in red zone efficiency. Basically could move the ball well between the 20s but had their share of issues otherwise.
It has been gone down every single year since Reid arrived in KC and this year they are a pitiful 28th in red zone efficiency.
I think talent is the real issue in the red zone for AR’s teams. The McNabb Eagles never had a top receiver outside the one year with TO (when they were good in the RZ). Guys like DeSean, Kevin Curtis, and Maclin put up numbers, but none of them was the kind of guy who could outjump two defenders to make a contested TD catch, which is what you need to excel. His KC teams haven’t had that kind of talent either. Fair to put that on him for not prioritizing it, but I think the issue is more Reid-the-GM than Reid-the-coach.
I started reading your comment and I was thinking ‘well Reid had GM responsibilities for most of his tenure here and in KC too.’
I tend to agree and still really appreciate Reid the coach even with all of his time management foibles & tendency to get pass happy. Borderline HOF coach.
Reid the GM is a lot less impressive who has a pretty mixed track record in the draft and FA. Probably average/slightly above but certainly has hindered Reid the coach too.
Agreed on both points.
are we in reality one year away from Doug being fired?
this group of individuals are pretty bad together. I foresee our record being similar or worse next year. We have no running game, receivers and a bad O line. The defense seems pretty bad too.
No not unless next year turns into an utter disaster and there are signs this team has rolled over on him & players are coming to Lurie to complain again.
Today was an important game to see how the players would respond. If they had gotten out blown out again while having their effort questioned, that would have been a very bad sign for Pederson.
After today’s game, it’s apparent Wentz has a very high ceiling. As much as we need three starting CBs (including a nickel) and WR help, I’m all for drafting and or using free agency on stud lineman. I’d rather give Wentz all day to throw to our current WRs and TE’s than the constant pressure and hits he endured today.
BTW, does anyone know what’s up with Brooks? I hope he does’t have a more serious illness as this is his 2nd missed game in 3 weeks.
Apparently it’s an ulcer’s issue dating back to his time in Houston.
That’s tough, but treatable. As long as it’s not ulcerative colitis.
can understand an unlcer playing for this team
I wonder if anybody has invented any medicines to deal with ulcer symptoms?
I was out with family. What did he do to give you that impression?
He played with poise and had good accuracy. He broke out of the pocket numerous times to avoid the rush and threw several completions under pressure. He was under constant pressure again and got sacked 4 times and hit 10 times. Several of his incompletions were due to his lack of throwing time.
He had a incomplete pass to Mathews that should have been reviewed by Doug as it was a touchdown. 2 plays later he threw an int. Honestly, he just passes eyeball test with ease.
I have somewhat evolved my plans for draft/free agency having looked a little at both classes. Go find a band aid weapon at WR, go out and target CB hard in the draft and pick up a RB.
Peters false starts suck but he has been a solid to good starter all year and worth bringing back and Johnson would be an idiot to ever put another artificial substance in his body that has not been lab tested by him – another ban would cost him upwards of $20mil . Inside i think we have been better than expected – Seumalo/Vaitai are projects but seem to be interesting long term but Barbre/Brooks have been good guard pair this year. Pick up another vet swing man cheap, draft a centre to develop mid to late.
Such a talented CB class i would hit it 2 times in the 1st 4 rounds, grab a RB who is going to be BPA, and maybe a LB as well. People are going to obsess over WR in the draft but class is /meh, and getting rookie WR production is rare. Find a vet to improve the group and see if 2017 allows you to address the position long term with free agency or draft.
We need several cornerbacks and I’d rather break in a couple of rookies with potential next year than roll the dice on our current crop or a high priced free agent.
That being said, I definitely see the need to upgrade the line as well.
Draft-wise this is a weak OL class (most mocks I’ve seen don’t have anybody going until late in the first round) and Johnson will be back next year. I think we can squeeze another year out of Peters if they don’t think Vaitai can make the leap to solid starter, if they do flip Johnson to LT and play Big V at RT. Barbre-Kelce-Brooks aren’t setting the world on fire as an interior trio but you could do worse. Seumalo might also be ready to start next year. Don’t think OL should be the top draft priority.
Olinemen tend to rise once teams start leaking to media to move people up and some of the more ‘pro’ draftniks start watching film. College draftniks tend to focus on playmakers early in the process since they jump off the film but generally the unless they are monster road graders its hard to jump off the tape as an interior lineman.
Yeah but I remember reading about guys like Tunsil and Stanley being surefire top 10 picks a lot around this time last year. There is nobody generating that kind of buzz this year.
Dolphins believe QB Ryan Tannehill tore his ACL. Tough break for a team on the brink of making the playoffs.
We need to cut one of veteran RBs this offseason. Which one do you cut. Sproles is the better player, but amatthews seems to make this offense work better
I think there’s very little chance Mathews is back.
Sproles should be gone, but unless he ask for a trade to a contender will be back.
Sproles and Mathews are each due $4M next year. Mathews injury history makes him the easy cut.
I tend to think both are gone although they likely have more interest in bringing back Sproles because of his utility and being a dynamic playmaker at times.
Stunned if they bring back Mathews or if he is a starting RB next year in the league too. He really should be a backup somewhere next year.
Mathews is highly paid, injury prone, and not even that good. I don’t see any way he’s back.
Sproles isn’t what he once has but still has utility as a pass catcher and special teams player.
Finding someone to play 1st/2nd down in this draft is not going to be a problem. Guys that you trust on 3rd down are harder to find as rookies. Keep sproles and move on from mathews.
I love what I’ve seen of Fournette (looks like Elliott 2.0) and McCaffrey (could be Edgerrin James to Wentz’s Manning). But I don’t know that I would spend a first round pick on either with so many other needs and it being a deep RB class.
Genuinely think this will be a BPA draft. If Fournette is there (for example) then go grab him. If we go BPA we will pick up a CB and RB at so points in the first 4 rounds since those classes are just so deep.
Wouldn’t hate grabbing 2 CBs within our first 4 picks
Nor would I. I think we definitely have to come away with at least one WR and and at least one CB in the primo rounds of this draft but for the most part it should be BPA.
Although it wouldn’t necessarily be my ideal draft, I wouldn’t be angry if we ended up taking 4 CBs with our first 4 picks…
Mathews can go. Look at the salary and lack of reliable availability.
I was sure of that too… until you look at the difference with and without him. Maybe we are underestimating him.
Imagine Wentz throwing to DeSean.
I’m having a hard enough time imagining an Eagles WR dragging his toes during a sideline catch…making actually impressive plays just seems unbelievable
And besides his speed what Eagles somehow seem to forget: DeSean catches everything coming his way. Just like what he did in his last season in Philly.
I blame the front office
It was pretty clearly Chip Kelly’s decision to dump him. Roseman gave him a contract extension before he was cut and the rest of the current FO wasn’t here when it happened.
They are all too blame. Chip, Howie and Lurie
Let’s not get carried away. He’s a good player and far better than anybody on the Eagles’ roster. But he’s not Dez Bryant/Julio Jones/Antonio Brown good. He’s a top 20 NFL WR which I’d certainly take but that’s all.
best deep ball WR in the history of the NFL.
Uhhhh, no. He’s not even the best deep ball WR in the league right now. He’s definitely not the best in NFL history. Randy Moss, James Lofton, Paul Warfield, Bob Hayes, Lynn Swann, Don Maynard are just some of the guys I think you’d have to rank ahead of him. I don’t know that I’d even rank him as the best Eagles deep ball receiver of my lifetime (I’d put Mike Quick ahead of him).
scratch Swann off of that list…………good otherwise.
Statistically he’s definitely one of the best deep threat in the league. He’s far from being considered one of the greatest WRs in NFL history or even in the league right now. But, with 152 20+ yard plays, 59 40+ yard plays and more 60 yard TDs than anyone in league history except Jerry Rice in less than 9 years in the league he’s certainly in the conversation for best deep threat in the NFL. Moss and Lofton are definitely ahead of DeSean. Moss had 226 20+ yard plays and 76 40+ yard plays…in 16 years though. Can’t find the stats on Lofton, but he put up prolific stats.
However, I don’t think the argument for the other WRs you listed is so definitive.
Warfield had more than 50 catches in a season just once in his career…as a rookie when he posted 52. As a starter he averaged 33 catches for 659 yards and 6.5 TDs.
Bob Hayes averaged as a starter 39 catches per season for 792 yards and 7.5 TDs.
Maynard as a starter: 45 catches for 844 yards and 6 TDs per season.
Jackson: 55 catches, 980 yards and 5.5 TDs.
He’s at least right there with those guys statistically if not considerably better.
As I said in my reply to your first comment on this, depends on the $$$$. Jackson is a good NFL receiver and letting him go was clearly the first of several major personnel blunders on Kelly’s part, but.. he is a speed guy nearing 30. The track record indicates those guys tend to age like week-old milk.
2 years / $12 mil total
If it’s not a huge signing bonus I’d do that.
umm does it look like djax has slowed down at all?
People said that about Shady too
Yeah grass is always greener
Even if Desean loses a step he’s still going to be pretty darn fast
Not yet. But as I said, he is nearing 30, and the vast majority of pure speed receivers who reach that age in the league don’t tend to sustain their performance. He is going to lose a step, and once he does he won’t be very valuable.
I am not sure DJax has the concentration to play CB.
Did anybody get into the lack of effort in pursuit by the D after Curry’s missed tackle on the Chris Thompson TD run? I can’t believe how lazy they were on that play.
I didnt notice anything like that. Not saying it didnt happen
Curry broke through and like zero guys attempted to make a tackle after that.
I don’t know if it was intentional but it was good. Once he had the first down the optimal outcome was for him to score. Otherwise they bleed the clock an have a chipshot to win.
It also more just seemed like WASTEAM blocked it up well, once Curry missed they had the backside walled off.
Also; am I out of line for being really upset at Ertz from lazily rounding off his route on the play where the endzone INT happened? It looked like the DB outworked Ertz to go get that ball.
It looked like a miscommunication… Ertz never even looked for the ball and Wentz throw it like he expected Ertz to cut in. Maybe Ertz was to slow to make his break or maybe Wentz rushed it.
Could be. But it was bad.
according to next gen stats djax the fastest player on the field today
According to Tampax’s stats Brooks was missing again.
I thought his wife was having a baby? N/M Ulcer.
That’s not a rub some dirt on it and play thing
That wasn’t communicated in a way I saw. I wasn’t even aware it was a possibility that he’d miss due to that.
Ulcer right? Cant really blame for being held out
Don’t they make meds for that?
Not for you to go play pro football. It can be very serious if its not taken care of.
I’d argue that could have been taken care of any time from January through August. I’m not trying to minimize the serious of an ulcer, but he was known to have them last year in Houston.
Its really not always that simple. It could have just become an issue
The timing of it. along with every other unavailable player on this roster, is on my last nerve. The collective losses of 3 games that should have been wins is making every individual on the team a target.
I’m not upset. I expected this team to lose out after Green Bay and CINN
I’m livid at the manner in which games are being lost. Low effort, guys laying down on the job and not playing, bad play calling, “next man up” applying to every team but us, fucking Dallas and piece of shit Dak being 11-1, the fucking Giants in playoff position, not being able to beat Washington, Lane’s suspension due to hanging out with roid head MMA guys, the Vikings winning today, etc.
yes
No, HE was giving birth!!
taylor gabriel is a nobody who is better than any offensive player on our team
I know some people having forgotten the economics of djax: from Kempski: ”
Jackson was set to count for $12.5 million against the salary cap in 2014, which was the highest number on the team. According to OverTheCap.com, Jackson’s release will save the Eagles $6.5 million in salary cap space, and $6.25 million will be “dead money.”
The wide receiver group in the upcoming draft is considered by some to be extraordinarily deep and talented.”
Ags!!!
We saved $6.5M by cutting him and then turned around and spent more than that on Riley Cooper, Miles Austin and Nelson Agholar trying to replace him. Jackson’s contract got progressively more manageable after 2014 and offered flexibility in that there was no longer any guaranteed money left on the deal. Which meant it was a series of one year deals that got progressively less expensive every year.
Had we decided to rework his deal, here is the type of deal he was looking for and willing to accept: DeSean Jackson signed a 4 year, $24,000,000 contract with the Washington Redskins, including a $5,000,000 signing bonus, $16,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,000,000. Which had average cap hits of $7.25M over 4 years.
We could have easily fit Jackson’s contract into our cap structure if we had wanted to. Chip’s decision was purely about what he wanted in a player and had very little to do with financials. Paying Jackson $6.25M in 2014 to play for the Redskins while also paying Riley Cooper $5M to take his place on our team was not a prudent financial move no matter how hard people try to justify it.
jackson wanted more money – at that time he wanted more than mike wallace.
I’m also not sure why a team that can never get a cb doesn’t sign brent grimes – is his wife that bad?
Shes that bad
Hundley in vs SEA – who would have evr thought.
