Fran tweeted that yesterday. It is the only such link he put out. Does he know something we don’t?
When free agency begins today, CB A.J. Bouye is likely to leave the Houston Texans and sign elsewhere, per sources.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 9, 2017
Hmm.
On the flip side.
Good info. Doubt it’ll be Philly, though Eagles could really use him. https://t.co/Am5DofedOm
— Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) March 9, 2017
Peter isn’t great with free agency. He doesn’t break a lot of news on who is signing where so this is more of an educated guess than a definitive report.
I don’t expect the Eagles to sign Bouye, but I went from thinking it was an extreme long shot to thinking it is actually possible.
RE: A.J. Bouye. I'd be surprised, unless #Eagles love him. Template should be 2014, signing unheralded Malcolm Jenkins over Jairus Byrd.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) March 9, 2017
Jenkins was a good player and former 1st round pick. I’m still not sure why the Saints moved on from him. That was a bizarre mistake. I don’t think this is a good comparison at all. Bouye was arguably the best corner in the NFL last season. Big question with him is whether he can sustain that. He’s not getting by on highlights and hype. Bouye was legitimately great in 2016.
It is still very possible the Eagles are quiet today. Don’t get your heart set on big names. The key is to sign the right guys. That could mean making a hard push for Alshon Jefferey or A.J. Bouye. Or it could mean trying to land Kenny Britt and Kayvon Webster.
Stay tuned.

The #Patriots deal for free agent CB Stephon Gilmore will happen, source said. Huge signing.
Buccaneers agreed to terms with WR DeSean Jackson, formerly of the Redskins.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jackson’s new deal will top $10 million annually. Jackson was connected to a number of teams leading up to his signing, but the Bucs were always thought of as the favorites. The move makes a ton of sense for both sides. Jackson should thrive as a deep threat for cannon-armed Jameis Winston while taking some of the pressure off Mike Evans. Jackson, Kenny Stills and Pierre Garcon are all off the market, leaving Alshon Jeffery and Terrelle Pryor as the top receivers available in free agency.

Titans consider themselves frontrunners for Bouye and Hightower, per source.
Logan Ryan … Why not?
My guess would be that he’s been ignored based on an assumption of returning to NE.
He’s strong, not afraid to get physical, agile, but a bit slow to play on the outside in some schemes. He’s basically a versatile player that would be a great nickle corner in our scheme. You wouldn’t want to pay him the outside money getting flung around currently. If he leaves the Patriots because someone overpays him, I don’t think they will get what they pay for. Belichick really knows how to use this guy. But if he’s a bargain, why not? Just don’t expect him to be much better than Nolan Carroll
No more Giants WRs or Patriots DBs
exactly
I’m a fan- especially coming from their secondary and multiple position/roles for each player. He’s played in the slot and on the outside; not a true shut down corner, but would be a big upgrade over what we had last year.
disagree on him being a big upgrade. He has a lot in common with Nolan Carroll. This guy won’t translate outside of the Patriots. Not playing on the outside at least. Could be a perfect nickle corner though.
Carroll turned into worse than burnt toast at the end of the year; Mills was the only productive corner we had left by seasons end. Ryan can play in and out- that’s the type of versatility that we like in our secondary.
I’m not saying he’s the “best” option, but at this stage of the game (and the money that we have to spend) we may not have much of a choice. He fits the genre with being younger, has experience, and knows how to win– the last attribute will be especially beneficial if we double dip in the draft to pick up secondary help.
I just wouldn’t want him on the outside, personally, he’s too small at 5’11” to get away with having 4.56 speed . Belichick can make it work because it’s Belichick. Schwartz has a bad habbit of hanging slow corners out to dry.
Again- with our cap situation and amount of need in the secondary, we may be in for a year or two of frustration based on personnel. Maybe not, but I can’t see us breaking the bank for a top tier corner with how many holes we have to fill.
Then again, CB and WR are two positions where it takes a few years to get the hang of in the NFL- maybe Howie surprises us. Hard to say.
Oh I totally agree that we may be going bargain-binning on Corner for a while. And I’m all for Ryan if the price is right. There is a huge chance that when Schwartz calls for Mills to play 10 yards off, then gets beat deep anyway, Schwartz’s primary concern is why his pass rush didn’t get home. We are laser focused on corner as fans, but it’s entirely plausible that the team is thinking pass rush.
Do not invest in those who are associated with the dark arts known as the Patriots defensive backfield.
When Belichick finally retires (or is struck down by the last jedi, whichever happens first) it will be fascinating to see what happens to the Pats secondary.
They’ll be buried along with him.

New Report: #Browns expected to sign WR Kenny Britt
This writer is an idiot and useless
Are you referring to Tommy Lawlor? If not, you are terrible at using the word “this”.
If so, you’re terribly wrong and don’t understand the purpose for this website.
Please answer because I’m curious.
He is referring to Allright I think.
That would make sense. I’ll assume that’s the case. But Gordon’s got to do a better job putting his words in the right position to make plays.

The #Browns are signing WR Kenny Britt, source said (as @caplannfl reported). 4 years, $32.5M.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson, the Bears have made a “strong offer” to free agent CB A.J. Bouye.
Dickerson didn’t offer any monetary details but said the Bears’ interest is “very real.” It looks like Chicago is going all in on Bouye after missing out on Stephon Gilmore. Adam Schefter reported earlier that Bouye is expected to leave Houston. It’s still early in the Bouye sweepstakes, but so far the Bears and Eagles have shown the most interest.
Rams signed LT Andrew Whitworth, formerly of the Bengals, to a three-year, $36 million contract with $15 million guaranteed.

so … same info we had a month ago…
With the Browns signing Britt does that mean they’re out on my #1 target, Terrelle Pryor?
i dont think they were ever in, they have so muhc $$ if they wanted someone they could have him
If they sign Pryor, they have almost completely abandoned their approach on emphasizing ‘quality character guys’ too because they are desperate for talent.
I’m fine with that too because an NFL team always is going to have a few questionable guys on it.
Bigger question to me with Pryor is does he play hard once he gets paid every week.
Thought it was CK that only wanted choir boys.
you must have missed their draft and FA last year
Pyror has more question marks over his head than anybody they took in FA and the draft last year except maybe Smallwood.
I can’t remember any of them being so openly questioned and derided by multiple teammates though either. Really rare among pro athletes.
wasn’t mills also questionable, we had a player arrested twice this season, he’s still on the team.
To me it says a lot when a QB with two years of experience as a WR would be our starting WR. If you have what it takes to make that transition we’re good.
Mills, DGB and Smallwood.
A LB who committed two crimes.
And people are down on Pryor because no one wants to go to his Birthday party…
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/cf6853cabe48eee24ada02877f35b1559271c31f7813702733dac8c2a46a52a8.jpg
Losing out to the Browns for Britt? Ugh.
That will be really hard to spin positively even for Roseman.
Not really. They might want Cooks.
Or Browns just out bid because of more cap space and Howard and Co. New what Britt was worth and didnt want to overspend.
If the Eagles really want to, they can clear cap space…I’d take it as, it’s more than what the Eagles wanted to pay and are ok with an older WR moving on…
Maybe but a lot of WRs went off the board and Britt’s contract with the Browns was in the range of what was speculated on here for a veteran WR.
Agree Britt certainly has his limitations and likely isn’t a No 1 guy. Need to grab at least 1 starting WR and 1 starting CB in FA though.
Im a bit upset they couldnt get anything for Barwin. Even a 6th/5th.
Basically a one year contract. Not worth giving resources for it if you have to negotiate anyway.
Not as much of a market as others thought or the team that wanted to trade for him was not a team he wanted to go to and the Eagles did right by him by letting him test the market.
Hm… I had never thought about it, but I think a front office might turn down a 7th for a player they like, and trade a player they hate for a 7th.
Eagles playing from a very weak hand with Barwin. He was almost a 100% obvious cut target when FA started to allow the Eagles to have a bit of cap breathing room.
Why pay for something when you can pick it up on the curb for free the next day?
Chance to get it before someone else but the market must have been weak for him.
He stunk last year although he does strike me a nice bounce back & starter for a 3-4 playoff defense this year.

The New England Patriots are considering trading Malcolm Butler to the New Orleans Saints for Brandin Cooks per sources
damn, Pats trying to get an actual WR? Might as well pencil them into the SB now.
Bye Cooks dream.
Jeffrey’s people getting desperate, looking for anyone to beat $13m/yr.
With Gilmore heading to NE, looks like Pats trying to trade Butler for Brandin Cooks..
Saw that- at least they still have Rowe to hold down the fort!
Nah…He’s too quiet to hold down any fort.
Maybe he missed his calling at The Alamo?
How hammered must Britt have gotten in Atlantic City to sign with the Browns?
all about $.
The Browns would have to double all other offers if it were my life and I was starring down the possibility of living in Cleveland and having to play for the Browns and catch passes from ???
not to mention Hue Jackson said straight up that they aren’t in a hurry, he wants to build the team up then look at getting a QB down the road, give him a situation like Dak Prescott had. I thought he was crazy to say that. Why will anyone play for you right now if you aren’t serious about winning right now. Mercs I guess. Britt has played for the Titans, Rams, and now the Browns. That’s a merc through and through.
Seriously. Plus it’s hard enough to find a QB. Whyh would you ever put more restrictions on it? If you have the opportunity to get one, do it! Don’t put it off until the rest of your roster is ready to compete and just assume you’ll be able to find one then. Especially when your team will (assuming they’re ready to compete minus a QB) be an 8-8 type squad by then unable to land a top 2 pick.
Come on Howie…we need to sign just one of these remaining free agent receivers…and not some crap like Ted Ginn.

UPDATE – It could cost #Patriots more than just Malcolm Butler to get Brandin Cooks:
As it should- he’s on the last year of his deal.
isn’t cooks? Butler is better than cooks imho
Cooks has this year plus a 5th year option- Butler doesn’t because he was an undrafted free agent. He’s on last year of deal.
Didn’t they slap a first round tender on him?
They did
Belichek is better at hiding shortcomings on the defense than he is on the offense.
Brady hides those.
This is so unpatriots. I’m confused by this whole thing.
Trying to maximize Tom’s last year or two
or 4.
I discussed here at work, I’m told 1) Bill is not going to pay Butler, who has one year left at a very good $3.5M ish salary. Bill loves Cooks, they do joint practices every year and bill always raves about him.
He must! Thanks for the info.
That being said…Bill not paying Butler would be exactly what I’d expect. He’s let every high priced CB they’ve had go the moment they hit FA. Signing Stephen Gilmore to a $15M/yr deal though is way outside their usual SOP. Doing that so they can get rid of a cheap #1 CB to trade for a stud WR in their prime is about the most in-patriots off-season ever.
agree, I am not surprised at all that he doesn’t want to pay Butler. I am quite surprised they signed Gilmore for that much.
interesting. And i’d assume that they could just not pay cooks when it’s time for him to get paid
maybe but I take it as Bill could pay Cooks but won’t pay Butler.
Looks like Barbre is staying, McLane just reported on Twitter. Good depth/veteran starter/fill in if needed.
meh
He can play LT, RT, and both G spots. I’m okay with this……….. gives us a year to draft and continue to develop talent while he sticks around for one more year.
He can do that but just not very well….
Where is Media Mike??
The Eagles will not tender an offer to restricted free agent RB Kenjon Barner, making him a free agent.
The Eagles could still bring the special teamer/deep reserve runner back for cheaper than $1.797 million, but he’s now free to do as he pleases on the open market. Barner turns 27 next month.
He’s probably out celebrating with a bottle of champagne
While driving Barner to the airport strapped to the roof
lol exactly
Torrey Smith 3 yr $15 mil to Eagles per Shefty
So, Cooks is going to New England. But we keep our 2nd round pick. 😉 3/15 sounds fair, especially with a good structure. He is a deep threat. Nothing more, nothing less.
Yeah, not overly exciting. If they can pair him with someone would be great. Think the price is right, and I prefer him to Britt.
Smith will be WR #2. That’s #2 money in today NFL. Howie will try Jeffrey or Pryor.
Or Cooks.
Pryor/Jeffery + Smith is what I would consider an exciting remake of the WR corps. Smith + DGB and a rookie is a decidedly less inspiring effort to surround Wentz with capable playmakers.
How many WRs will we carry. Somene’s gotta go if we take another one right?
Can carry 6. DGB has a lot to prove. Aghs will be on the roster, but only because his cap hit would be higher if we cut him. Can be inactive on gameday, though.
DGB, AGS, JMATT, Pryor, Turner, Smith?
Turner is still slow und unathletic as hell. Has to earn the roster spot. Could beat out DGB, f.e.
I assume our depth chart will look like this when it’s all said and done.
#1: Pyor/Jeffery
#2/3: Smith/Matthews (if not traded)
Agholor has a spot, question is active on gameday or not
DGB, Turner, Treggs, maybe a late round draft pick or two, fighting for at least one, maybe two spots. And one could be active on gameday, depending on Agholors development.
Then focus on Defense in the Draft (maybe except for one RB in rounds 2-4).
Well no, cooks is not going to NE until it’s reported so.
A WR with speed to stretch the field on a reasonable contract. Not sure he is that good, but he will help our offense.
yeah gotta like the 3/15 number.
Torrey Smith isnt gonna be the player to save our franchise or make us exited about the WR situation, but he is a good compliment to JMatt. Now we gotta find the player who can actually dominate and be that WR no. 1 Wentz desperately need.
The Eagles have landed Torrey Smith. The veteran wide receiver will get a three-year, $15MM deal, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
The Ravens were said to be nearing a deal to bring Smith back to Baltimore. Apparently, that fell through. Now, the Eagles have added Smith as another weapon for quarterback Carson Wentz to work with
cheap deal, can’t complain, not super exciting – focus should have been more on him i guess since it’s clear we had interest.
Cheaper than Britt, that’s for sure. And after 2 years of San Fran hell, hopefully he has something to prove.

Former Bills WR Robert Woods is returning to LA, to the Rams, per sources. Back in the Coliseum, like at USC.

Hmmm.
Damnit.
Why are the Eagles making a push for an injury prone WR who already has his first drug suspension under his belt?
So that Lane has a friend to use with?
Unfortunately, not a dope suspension (which requires seemingly hundreds of failed drug tests now).
A PEDs suspension. 1 more and he’s gone for 10 games.
Why are the colts? Isnt WR the only position they are actually good at?
A good friend of mine, who is an avid Colts fan (from back in the Baltimore Colts days) basically feels like the team has Andrew Luck, and nobody else worth mentioning. It’s pretty brutal actually, the way their team has seemingly been mismanaged into a place where they’re not just stomping everyone in their division with their franchise QB.

Update: Robert Woods Gets Five-Year, $39M Deal From #Rams With $15M Gtd
I liked Woods, but with JMatt here theres really no need for him and holy crap thats a huge contract for him.
Smith is official. Eagles can probably announce it because he was cut (I assume).
https://twitter.com/Eagles/status/839872811812298752
Wow . . . this is just like when the Eagles acquired Terrell Owens!
And since he wears #82 instead of #81, we will get 1 more year of production out of him compared to TO!!!
I’m pretty sure there’s a provision in his contract regarding driveway situps or punching Wentz.
also deductions per tear dropped in press conferences (with an exemption for post superbowl ones).
Seriously though, an encouraging pickup at that price.
X –
That’s gotta be the view.
And I’m assuming it’s an easy deal to walk away from — given Smith’s never been much more than a 45+ receptions / year guy.
Right, he’s a ypc guy.
Only disappointing if he’s the only one.
That really is a great price seeing the crazy money being thrown around. If he becomes Pedersons version of Pinkston who just ran deep flies and posts, he’s more than worth $5M a year which is starting to become backup money.
We got our Beckham just kidding…involving Maxwell on a pick …

The Eagles now have 2 WR with proven NFL production. Thats already better than last year!
M –
Torrey’s Smith’s production’s been declining, save a big Y-3 in Baltimore.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitTo02.htm
Can’t put all that on the SF franchise.
One thing Kelly was good at was pumping up WR numbers — even with Sanchez, FoLEs(ey), and Vick as QBs.
On the other hand, Joe Douglas was a Baltimore scout 7 years ago when the Ravens drafted Smith . . . so there’s that.
better then a stick in your eye…I mean — I’ll take him over what sludge we have now 🙂
Exactly my point!
Hard to argue he’s not an upgrade over NA, DGB.
’cause Smith is.
That is quite a back-handed compliment though.
🙂 … that too, is true. he’s not a HUGE upgrade… Eagles still need more to fully upgrade the position…maybe draft? maybe another FA — but they can’t be done with just this signing
He’s a solid deep threat, it’s a reasonable price and addition.
X-
You’re right about that.
Though his reception numbers have gone down — below Agholor’s for 2 years in SF —
Smith’s YPC is 15+ every year.
Torrey Smith! Super Bowl!
He gets a big fat ‘meh’
Always wise to judge free agency hours before it begins.
And not to pick on Bob. Just sayin…
Pick on me all you want. I’m fine with it.
He fills their requirement for an outside WR but he flat out stunk last year.
If he ends up at ~50 catches, ~800 yards, ~5 TDs, he have been a solid signing. My sense is that he ends up short of that.
Only because DGB, JMatt and Pryor combine for 3000yds 15tds?
but this to me is Howie trying to sign someone who can out perform their contract. Doesn’t solve everything of course, but I like it. Now let’s see what else happens.
His career suggests that is a reasonable expectation, barring injury.
Anyone not interested in us and Alshon? I feel like the remaining money we have could be spent elsewhere.
prefer pryor to jeffery, but i’m always wrong.
So do i…for the fact that he may cost less, has higher upside and no PED suspension history
Eagles sign Torrey Smith 3 yrs/$15 mil. As far as the FA WR market, this isn’t bad. It’s not great, but not bad either.
For what it is worth, Torrey Smith was the worst-rated WR (119 out of 119) by PFF last year.
Agholor was 118th.
can’ttrust anything coming out of SF last year
Nor can you trust PFF
It is more of a general yard marker than anything but not definitive.
I just them more on WR valuation though than I do on line play.
You mean Matt Barkley isn’t better than Aaron Rodgers?
FUCKKKK man.
I have to go think about this
Coach –
Are you saying PFF had Barkley rated over AR for anything (not negative)?
Dead serious they had him above Rodgers for three weeks in a row (and not even early season, who is this guy Rodgers)
PFF = nonsense
Who was 117? He should call his agent.
SF QBs had weak scatter shot arms.
Did you see the offense and the QBs they rolled out last year?
This was the text message from my friend who is a 49ers’ season ticket holder on this signing:
‘Haha’
They cheered for Chip Kelly coming in too
Not much so much cheered but seemed they were glad to get any kind of name & move on from the previous disaster.
Browns get brought up as being the worst franchise in the NFL but the 49ers have given them a great run for their money the past 2 years.
Did you just respond with a picture of Jed?
Just Brian Hoyer throwing a ball awkwardly.
Everyone was laughing at Chip Kelly . If he can be a deep threat it buys us time to find one.
well, at least he can’t get any worse then, right?
PFF is always right and always takes context into account….
or not…
Bob – it seems like you’re looking for ways to hate on this guy. Maybe I’m reading your wrong. But can you please slow down on the negativity?
I don’t think he was signed based upon last year’s performance.
According to multiple Twitter follows of mine, Smith is a great locker room guy. Don’t underestimate that, especially if we trade Matthews.
I like the signing. Reasonable contract and a deep speed receiver. He absolutely needs help on the other side so I am in favor of Alshon considering he’s still young.
We should get kaep as a backup

Wide Receiver Ted Ginn Junior is signing with the New Orleans Saints per sources
cooks gone? ginn seems like a worse cooks
Yeah the Saints supposedly are all about upgrading their miserable defense at all costs this offseason.
the Saints keep losing more and more leverage on the Cooks trade. As Joe Banner said yesterday, they have to trade him.
Signing Ginn may suggest a deal-in-principle is already in place.
Details, like extending Cooks and any player coming back, may be the hold up.
true but Joe’s point was before that (day or two ago), the way they shopped him Joe said no way he is back no the Saints they will make best deal they can. Joe also said although he likes Cooks, he has a really hard time trading an asset AND paying near top dollar for someone. Which seems right to me, and depresses his market a little. This talk of #1 pick makes little sense to me.
Understand the “point of no return” scenario.
Totally agree abt the No. 1 pick, too. Can’t see it.
For me, the soon-to-be #1 FA is Scott McCloughan.
Don’t care what his alleged warts are.
All the guy does is find lots of good football players.
Maybe he can FaceTime from a Betty Ford clinic?
There has been plenty of talk about his drinking, but all seem to be rumors. Some say he does, others he doesn’t. What is known is there is a rift between McCloughan and Bruce Allen. seems Bruce does not respect McCloughan for the job he was hired for. Skins have been drafting better the past two years and Allen can’t seem to let the guy have his kudos. Check this; https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2017/03/08/redskins-gm-scot-mccloughan-has-no-role-in-current-free-agency-decision-making/?utm_term=.b467d788bb34
Stories are out there that McCloughan has been in favor of signing Cousins and has been overruled. If true, that would be a major issue considering their predicament right now..
does he work best sober or drunk though?
I like him, too. But he has to get the alcohol under control, for both him and any team that might hire him.
X –
Would like the Eagles to bring him on in a position like Tom Donahoe’s . . .
A meaningless title, but all input welcome.
Muellers office is empty
I’m thinking there would be too much overlap between him and Douglas, who deserves a shot. It’s not like Howie is comfortable being hands off, either.
NFL is a burnout job. Might do him good to take a year off.
I think locking a guy in the subbasement of NovaCare with nothing but Skoal and Perrier feels means.
I don’t
Compared to the Vet’s sub-basement, McCloughan would living in the tall cotton.
I mean maybe if Howie and Joe promise that they will let him use the fax machine to send photocopies of his ass to WASTEAM after the draft…
I dubious the NovaCare facility offices (which are pretty old too) are that luxurious either.
At least you wouldn’t have to fear being attacked by rats at night as badly.
Think you just have to let him make decisions. I’d hire him as a consultant for sure.
I think
1. He has to stop drinking. Period.
2. he needs to go back to what he was doing before the redskins, he was making low six figures just selling his reports to a dozen teams.
I think maybe being employed by the Redskins and the drinking might be correlated somehow.
I mean I’d probably start drinking if my boss was Dan Snyder. The man’s a lunatic.
Say this about Smith – right time and right place.
Even two offseasons ago, I can’t believe someone his age/numbers/production would have been given more than a single year & wouldn’t have been guaranteed to make the Week 1 roster.
Huh? Even 2 years ago this would have been reasonable. Britt’s contract is much more of a sign of inflation than this one.
You really think he would have gotten more than a single year though?
Maybe 2 years but not much guaranteed at all in the 2nd year.
That I’m not sure about. But Howie is normally excellent at structuring contracts. If the 3rd year got him in here at a reasonable rate, it may very well pay off. He’s not ancient.
Leodis signed for 2/7 last year. Inflation and a year of funny money.
I can barely focus on work stuff. What a day!!!
But are you easing your anxiety with some liquid refreshment?

Can’t. 🙁

gas? what, are you 8?
laughing gas for a dental procedure?
haven’t seen it since I was about 8. Didn’t realize it’s an option for adults. (honestly)
I’ve had some dentist use it liberally and others who find it arcane.
German method. With apologies to GermanEagle.
I’ve given up, today is what I thought Tuesday would be…..
officially starts at 1 today? so next hour everything (that’s done or will get done) will be out?
4pm
oh geez I can’t sit here for 4 hours. I’ll have to check in and out.
Eagles out on Cooks? According to Ian Rappaport, Patriots and Titans still in, deal expected this afternoon
Were the Eagles ever seriously in that game?
Seemed to be the consensus was those three (Phi, Ten and NE)
I can’t think so if the asking price as a floor was their 1st round pick.
Doesn’t jive with anything Roseman has said since the season ended.
who thinks we:
1. Sign Jeffries
2. Sign Pryor
3. Sign the Texans CB
4. none of the above
5. Spend two months convincing ourselves it’s ok
6. but it won’t be.
7. But if they can just find three immediate all pros and five other starters in the draft…
Who is Jeffries?
Who gets annoyed by people who post sarcastic name spelling corrections?
not me Jon
I think 1, 2 or Cooks is a decent chance. If it’s a high-priced CB we can pretty much count on maneuvers to guarantee a first round WR. Highly unlikely Wentz is not given weapons, the organization is committed to his development.
It would be so much easier to target a CB in round 1, makes me think that WR will be the FA splash.
I guess I am dismissing Cooks but shouldn’t. I’ll guess Pryor.
I like both of them. Very leery that Alshon will be worth his contract, but he certainly has the potential to dominate. Really though, the team has so much more info on this that it’s just a matter of trusting them to pick the right one.
I think cooks is gone
Put me in the “2” column along with drafting a WR. That might put our WRs in the “respectable” category. Still need a FA CB (from Denver) and draft at least one.
Marcus Cooper is another lower tier FA CB I’d be interested in. Though Kayvon Webster is even more enticing.
Webster, Ryan and Cooper should all be options.
As ACVike pointed out below… if Logan Ryan is available, the Eagles should be talking to his agent. I’d be psyched about it.
Torrey Smith doesn’t make a difference on his own, but he does set up the checker board nicely for a nice combo if things go right. Basically if the O-line has a strong season and stay healthy, it can set off a very nice chain reaction with this piece in place. O-line gets a strong run game going, strong run game going, lets Smith succeed deep, which lets our other losers pick apart zone coverage, which sets up man coverage and draws and pick plays and around it goes. Basically the way 2013 went before Chip decided he didn’t need to stretch the field vertically to get the space he needed.
Long story short Smith puts the “perfect storm” in play, but nothing more. Odds are he doesn’t make much difference in my eyes. But that’s not a bad contract, and we don’t have the resources to go out and get a real #1 receiver.
love the “our other losers”. Perfect.
A87:
Interesting thesis.
The only premises with which I have a qualm are:
“O-line gets a strong run game going, strong run game going . . . “
Just don’t see Pederson ever committing to the run in a way that forces defenses to go 8-in-the-box.
No but he’s incredibly multiple. You don’t really even need a loaded box just to roll a safety into robber.
Coach –
Your longer x’s and o’s posts are missed here.
I really want D3FB to start a football theory site where he breaks down plays and the thinking behind them or what they’re supposed to accomplish. I feel like my knowledge of the game would be boosted immensely by that.
I see it more being the fact that DGB and Agholor were so bad last year that they essentially have no expectations they’ll be meaningful contributors this year.
Smith is better than either of them and does help them at least fill one of the 2 outside spots.
In the “perfect storm” scenario, one of them would be our Riley Cooper of 2013 in my mind. And honestly, if this is the best case scenario, Agh’s modest success makes him stop being a headcase and he ditches his “bust” status.
Again, not likely, but Smith gives us potential we didn’t have before, even if we aren’t likely to achieve it.
Interesting, who is our rb?
who knows, I want to clarify, I’m not predicting this will happen at all. Just puts the potential there. Maybe we draft a complimentary back to go with smallwood and sproles, or maybe we pick one off of FA cheap. Once things are clicking, you don’t need prime AP to run 80 yards through 8 guys in the box.
But that’s something I’d love to watch
that would be really awesome. I’ll settle for at least having the ability to take the defense gives us, and doing that well.
Sproles + … well it doesn’t really matter, we pass the ball 65% of the time.
Kirk Cousins begging for a trade
this won’t end well
Yeah, apparently went to Snyder and was told not to get his hopes up.
2 top receivers gone and a disgruntled QB?
A drunk GM and a partridge in a pear tree
Heard drinking wasn’t the problem, he just had no power and team didn’t defend him when the off the wagon rumors happened
I heard that too. If that’s the case, I hope he skewers them when he gets out.
It was a part of the problem, but he’s ultimately getting fired because Dan wants to be GM.
Nor should it- they had the option to extend him and lock him up previously, they declined. Now their franchise is a dumpster fire (again) and he wants out– that’s on management and their front office.
I don’t have an ounce of pity for that organization
so Cousins plays not to get hurt this year and signs elsewhere next season?
what exactly is Washington’s plan?
He plays that way, he’ll get hurt- always happens.
I don’t know, and it seems like they don’t know either. 2 of their most productive WR’s are gone, they have a QB who wants out, and their most productive talent evaluator has been shown the door.
Maybe they plan to tank this year and screw up the evaluations on early QB prospects in the draft next year?
if you want to tank the season, why pay franchise tag QB salary to Cousins?
In other words, I don’t think they know what their plan is………… maybe they do and it sucks (wouldn’t surprise me). Hard to see a professional organization screw up a scenario like this, but that’s what they are doing.
They have two very good young wrs, so not surprised djacc and Garcon are gone. just can’t believe they’re dropping McLaughlin
I’m looking for a weird draft this year. The type of picks like Bennie Logan and Hicks turned out being. It’s way too easy to say “We need a WR so we’ll draft a WR.” Where’s the fun in that?
We’re going 8 OL, 1 RB, Smith and Carson baby!
Fuck yeah.
Right now (provided we aquire another receiver and a CB) I would love Rueben Foster in the 1st and a CB like King, Mornau, Wilson or griffin in the 2nd..followed by a receiver or RB in the 3rd or 4th..
Broncos Signing G Ronald Leary To Four-Year, $35M Deal
I want Pryor over Jeffrey. Jeffrey plays against teams weak at CB 6 games a season
The only times Pryor seemed to have bad games last year was when some hack who was the #2 overall pick in the draft was throwing the ball to him.
So you’re in agreement?
Pryor would be a gamble, but it’d be a risk I would take.
Every option is a gamble though…
Agreed. I’m more risk averse on certain gambles though. I’ll root for Alshon, but I’m wary of the soft tissue issue and PEDs.
Fair enough.
Farewell to Connor. One of my all-time favorite Philly athletes.
Agreed. Letting me root for that guy was one of the few benefits of the Chip era. I still remember that crazy game he had against Carolina.

Agent For CB A.J. Bouye Informs #Texans He’s Signing With Another Team
Kiko gets a first round tender from the Dolphins.
We should do it, guys.
Trade Kiko to the Saints for Cooks after we give up our 1st for him? I’m in!
We should trade for him.
Not until we have a star running back as a trade piece. Let’s see how this draft plays out, then strike.
Torrey Smith…. because you can’t have enough WRs who can’t catch!
He can catch. Come the F on. Every WR drops. Julio Jones drops. Antonio Brown drops.
Torrey Smith drops balls frequently.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitTo02.htm#receiving_and_rushing::none
Seriously look at his catch rate and yards.
That link didn’t quite work – at least on my computer. I do appreciate that you are supplying some data.
hmm they had a share link to the specific table, here is the main url http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitTo02.htm#receiving_and_rushing::none
Similar catch rate and ypc to Desean. He’s a deep play guy, not running many WR screens. Relax, he’s a solid player, almost certainly the teams intends to add more WR talent.
Many WRs do including high-level ones. Until I see stats that back up your point, I will assume you are just being a typical lazy/negative fan.
2 drops last year, 3 the year before.
Drop rates are expected to be higher for receivers who run more deep routes. Its just a lower percentage play. Smith is fine in that department.
If we drop big money on someone who would you rather have Smith/Bouye or Smith/Jefferey
Jefferey, draft and develop the CB’s – Wentz needs help now. And because Shwartz doesn’t blitz much, corners don’t play on an island all that much
Bouye, because I don’t want my money on the injury report. Call me Media Tumtum I guess…

Lol the good old anonymous source
Everyone hedging their tweets this year, like anyone cares if they’re wrong.
Well, nobody wants to look like Allbright. I hear he is at the airport waiting to pick up Kenny Britt.
Some sources say a Team a team is interested in a Player. Situation is fluid, though. Open to other of offers or other players maybe.
Depends on offer amount
I’m getting contradictory reports Re: #player. Sounds like the team may have moved on. Could become interested as more pieces fall into place.
Not too credible when they spell his name incorrectly as well.

The #Jaguars are closing in on a deal for former #Texans CB AJ Bouye, per @JamesPalmerTV and me. They are bringing it.
wow, Bouye on one side and Jalen Ramsey on the other…sheeesh
Need to see the details of how the Smith deal is structured. If this is really a one year deal, it is a better than the 3 yr/$15M headline.
The 3 year $15M is not a bad headline at all. That’s perfectly reasonable for a vet with his production.
$5m per year on a veteran receiver is about 50% lower than the going rate right now as reported.
Are you asking about the guaranteed money and how it is spread out over the life of the contract? More than likely, they Eagles will be able to get out from under it with minimal cap influence beginning in 2018.
Guaranteed money. If Smith is on the downward trend and basically looks like he isn’t worth keeping around, the Eagles can cut bait next offseason instead of being stuck with a guaranteed $4M stiff for another year.
wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a howie special. I’d be more surprised if it wasn’t.
I think we will all be pleasantly surprised with Smith.
i mean we were calling Treggs the next djax, i think we’re just starved for someone that can catch.
Football, meet hands. Hands, it is your job to hold onto football. Apparently, this is harder than it sounds.
Fake News!
#Alternative Facts
Oh the credibility. They spelt his name wrong. Not saying it won’t happen, but until we see it from Sheffy or Rap, not getting my hopes up.
We shall see if Kyle Scott has a sauce.
Alfredo? Meat? garlic?
Scott broke the McCoy brawl story back in the day, and runs CrossingBroad.com
He’s got some sources (but he’s a nut sometimes also).
Greeeeaaaaaat.
Can’t wait to do the calculations of how much he makes per snap played after the season….
—
Its like you can’t cut Nelson (or more like DGB for that role), and you are going to end up playing them as much as u did last season if not more due to his injuries. Really sucks.
Why?
Leary’s contract is a bar raiser.
I am SO HAPPY that some hard news is finally going to come out and all this speculation is going to be over.
The endless speculative and maybe tweets get so old, I have to tune it out most of the time.
Ahh poop, we couldn’t get anything in a trade for Barwin. That’s actually surprising, he’d still be a really solid starter for a 3-4 team.
But his contract was fair for expected value, with a limited pool of 3-4 teams. He will sign for less somewhere, and they won’t have to give up a pick.
I didn’t think his contract was really that prohibitive, seems like a fair market price for a player of his caliber. I guess I’m wrong, but that’s the way I perceived it.
I don’t think it was prohibitive, though he will likely sign for less, due to demand. But even at fair value it wasn’t worth giving up a pick for.
Probably a typical case of I like Connor Barwin better than other teams do because he played for my team and did some good stuff here. Plus he’s a likable guy.
Very much so, glad the team cut him before FA.
Smith 3 years 15 million, that works. Seemed like a no brainer signing for us really.
Welcome aboard, let us know when you get to Noon.
Is it noon yet? Spring break just started for me today so all sense of time and space has been lost.
Enjoy!
I’m a nontraditional student so my days of flying somewhere exotic and getting shitfaced are behind me. I’ll still enjoy not feeling constant deadline pressure for a little while though.
Maturity: When “party hard” turns into “study hard.” Been there, brother.
Has Ryan matthews been cut yet? If not why the wait? I understand trying to trade Kelce and Kendricks, but matthews?
Because he is hurt and there is some rule about having to pay money for cutting a hurt guy. kempski did an article on it a few weeks ago
So he is here forever…cuz that dude stays hurt.
I’m not a huge fan of Smith but at least the contract is reasonable. Does getting smith preclude getting DJax?
At this point I’m sure we’re still hoping for Pryor or Jeffery?
D Jax is signing in Tampa. Rumors out there about Jeffrey coming to Philly, but unconfirmed for now.
5M vs 11M for Jax
2x Torrey = 1 DeSean!!
Neither player is getting us over the top. Im ok with the deal as we have other needs
Same here. Reasonable deal for Smith, as long as we sign at least one more WR..
He was a better and cheaper alternative to Jackson.
To complete the circa 1999/2000 parallels, Iggles will bring in Charles Johnson and Torrance Small Pt 2: “guys who had a good year once but are not good but hey it was reasonable money oh look at that we drafted Freddie Mitchell again”.
Wentz will spend his 20’s throwing to men with no arms until we trade for a star with borderline personality disorder.
He can get us 1000 yards on the outside. Perfectly fine with this signing. I liken this to a McCleod type signing.
I hope so! Fast guys don’t age great, but I’m just having a laugh.
So Odell beckham jr in 2021 and a superbowl appearance? cool
Bears are releasing Cutler.
yeah they signed glennon. Does cutler go back to Denver? To Houston?
Cutler has JETS written all over.
No bmarsh reunion?
One of those two is going to end up with Romo.
I love these reporters. “Leaning towards” “expects”… I get it’s fluid. But just don’t put it out there.
Josina is real enough for me. Sounds like “Alshon is waiting for a counteroffer before choosing between two teams he’s not super happy about”
Why wouldn’t you be happy to play with Wentz or Luck though? Does he really think Glennon is good?
he said he wants to be on a “contender”
I dont mind it when it comes to sports
Reporters go nuts with this guy kind of free agency innuendo because it garners likes, retweets, follows, it might get picked up by larger media outlets…
I imagine a small % of these tweets are just bullshit. It doesn’t take much imagination to put 2 and 2 together that Jeffery and the Eagles might make a good pair, so all I have to do then is say an “anonymous source” tells me that Jeffrey is thinking about the Eagles, and boom, instantly my exposure goes up, plus I don’t lose any credibility if it doesn’t happen because the situation is “fluid”.
This is really a bonanza for the reporters, great opportunity to increase their exposure and gain followers and hits.
Just don’t wanna be Gore’d again. Mid jerk-off mode and then the camera pans to the guy…
The lure of being the first is greater than the fear of being looked at as a fool.
At this point most readers view these guys like weather men. Their making an educated guess, leaning toward the more interesting outcome.
Like PFT says: “Better make an offer now I’m gonna count to 5 then sign with Eagles!!”
she didn’t complete her sentence …leaning towards choosing the #Eagles when free agency starts..as a tool to drive up his value to get another team to pay more money…
DT Alan Branch resigned with Pats for 2/$12mil. Market for Bennie might not be as good as we thought.
Talks of Texans and Broncos trying to trade for Romo.
Winner of that battle is at 1 or 2 in anyone’s AFC power rankings, immediately.
If I’m Romo i’d WAY prefer texans, lots of good pass rushers in broncos’ division.
2 my friend, 2. Not 1, but 2.
lol probably.
Cyprien signed with Titans.
Always liked him, seemed like Bradley’s system didn’t really fit him. Wonder if he bounces back with someone like LeBeau coaching out there.
He was my draft crush a few years ago.
Mine too…was pissed when the Jags took him ahead of us in the 2nd rd

I don’t follow the position close enough — would AJ and TS play the same position? Another words, is AJ a deep threat like T. Smith is?
I would say AJ is your overall well rounded true “#1” capable of doing everything. TS is more of the deep guy and JM is more of the “possession”guy.
ok, so the signing would make sense…
Yes it would be an ‘above average’ starting duo.
Torrey Smiths game was based more on speed where as Alshon basically is a baby Dez Bryant who typically will out jump defenses and come down with 50/50 balls… In Cowboys terms, Torrey would be the Terrence Williams, and Alshon would be DEZ
Brandon Marshall’s deal was 2/$11mil. We get Smith at the same price….

Love that move, especially with tons of cap space and building for the future. Front load those contracts and get a great OL on cheaper deals in the future, even if you extend them.
Jags buying up everyone. Big money to Calais Campbell and Obeyaeao… The CB.
But for real, Boldin is still available everyone.
35yo wr with 24yo QB? Not sure that’s happening. Be a nice backup plan for the pats
There are lots of scenarios I could be cool with adding him on a 1 yr deal. Not really a first week of FA type of move to make though.
It’s Boldin. What’s wrong with you?

Peak not-reporting has been reached.
Wish we had money to blow, I’d love to put The finishing touches on the guard position reuniting Chance Warmack with Stoutland, moving Seumalo at Center. Brooks, Suemalo and Chance would give us a bigger, stronger, beefed up interior OL. Unfortunately a free agent Guard ISNT in the budget
..
Realistically we will likely need to take a measured approach this offseason. This isn’t a one offseason rebuild unfortunately but im Hoping we can at least get our #1 WR or #1 CB in place this offseason (unlikely we get both). But if we can get a legit #1 at WR or CB, I will be pleased with the offseason Assuming we also upgraded Talent at the other position even if the true #1 has to wait Til next offseason. What scares me is besides TO, when was the last time the Eagles acquired (trade or FA) a difference making WR? We don’t have The greatest resume evaluating that position since Andy drafted Desean and Maclin
.
No idea what The Eagles have in mind for the RB position as far as complimenting Sproles and Smallwood. love to add a big Back like the stud RB that emerged for the Bears
.
Im really worried about losing Bennie Logan. Hopefully Roseman finds a way to retain him
..
Unless two of the three really improve (MS2, Means or McCalister) we are going to have to add another edge rusher
,
So much work to do this offseason
Wasn’t Fluker with Stoutland as well at Alabama? But linemen are getting paid massively and as you said- we don’t have the money to blow right now.
With how deep the draft is at RB, I’m hoping to find a contributor on Day 3, especially with Douglas and his team doing evaluations.
Or so I thought.. hello chance Warmack
Worked out for sure
You and I got one of our wishes granted brother! Chance signed for 1 year

The Dumper Truck full of dollars with the Bears logo it parked outside their house makes Mike Glennon look really attractive. That’s crazy
Great move for both teams. Texans must be getting Romo, and clearing books to try and make a legit run at the Super Bowl.
this is an NBA trade here, cap hit for picks.
Sam Hinkie strikes again!
Amazing, that’s great for CLE although i probably would have wanted more than a 2nd. But they have money to burn.
Still like that from the Browns. They have nothing at QB since RG3 is thrash too, they have plenty of capspace and get some value to just take a player to fill a roster spot. They’ll cut Osweiler next year with little penalty.
Basically just got a 2nd rounder because they have cap space.
RG3 is very Thrash like lol
Cleveland can take every pick in the draft and still put up a 3-13 season.
Matt Miller ✔ @nfldraftscout
Browns get: Osweiler, 2017 R6, 2018 R2
Texans get: 2017 R4, cap space
Oh, they really had to give up the 4th? Couldn’t they probably just have given a 7th or a player with zero dead money to make the trade go through.
Lol if you’re tripping over yourself to say yes that quickly, you might not realize you can get more out of it.
Does Texans GM get fired too for signing BO in the first place?
For signing Osweiler no.
For giving him that contract, both in terms of total money and structure, maybe he should. Apparently their ownership loves the GM and won’t fire him.
It’s a QB league- gotta try, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. With even competent QB play last year they advance in the playoffs.
That’s the point with Wentz- development is so important with these young guys; either you have a QB or you don’t, and if you don’t is VERY expensive to try and get one.
The Browns are pure gold.
4 minutes….

If you look at it as Jeffery was the only WR we were gonna sign, sure. Any other WR who stays healthy gives me a better chance to not see NA.
I do really like the 1 year flier though. 100% worth.
They have a #1 WR if you like that term until he gets hurt or tests positive.
1 year deal…That’s odd
Its great. I love it.
1 year to prove he A) can stay clean, B) stay healthy, and C) that he’s worth #1 receiver mega-deal money.
Eagles clear up a bunch of cap space after this season as well, correct(?), so if Alshon is “all that,” Eagles have money to keep him.
I *think* so. I can’t get to OverTheCap.com (i’m assuming every NFL fan is hammering that site at the moment).

CHANCE WARMACK 1 YR DEAAL
Like having Alshon, but don’t like the contract. 1 year deal means we can’t spread out the cap hit. We might be all but done in FA now. Anyone up to date on the cap? did we just lose Bennie?
Bernie / Kelce probably gone.
Deal precludes us from resigning Bennie:(
until we purge our roster
So – does this mean we aren’t rebuilding or we are?
first couple SB’s will be in rebuilding years, then one off year, then dynasty.
This isn’t the NBA. You don’t rebuild in the NFL unless you’re the Browns
Always building a contender, always trying to contend right now.
I don’t think Ags is happy today.
haha what was he expecting?
Realistically I think it means DGB is cut. Agholor stays on for one more year, I think his ceiling is higher than Matthews if he can put it together
DGB has less than a $900k cap hit, doubt he’s gone. Probably training camp battle, plus decisions to make on JMatt
Yeah might as well move both those guys, don’t need DGB when you have Jeffery and i don’t think Jeffery is going to couach up jeffrey
Or a raw talent like DGB can learn from big body veteran Alshon.
..
WHY cut Any Young WRs? Make the fight and compete for their Eagle lives all summer before we cut anyone. Why cut puppies before seeing how much they improve with another offseason of work?
Writing was on the wall but Aghs never turned his head around in time.
ouch
https://twitter.com/Eagles/status/839946940217446401
I remember when he was the safe, can’t miss prospect.
GE… your dreams were answered. I guess releasing ole’ what’s his face earlier this month was well thought out.
HOLY SHIT?!?! I was just wishing on a Chance Warmack star like 45 minutes ago thinking it was hopeless, and HOWIE delivers two serious talents on 1yr deals with a ton to prove?
..
Im amazed
If Stoutland can unlock his potential then we have a competent LG if Seumalo is going to be the future center. Most likely Warmack is here to compete with Barbre if he doesn’t get traded.
Um… Wow
We got Warnock too
????!!!
Well anyone who didn’t like the idea of Jeffery because of the injury/PED risk can’t be upset with a one year deal.
How are we affording one year deals? With our cap room
Answer: Howard Roseman.
This.^. basically confusing money ball things that I don’t care about. I just care that I really do love Howie the GM.
Warmack
Looking forward to Alshon’s weekly contribution to our injury report
If we lose Bennie and get a decent Rb, our O is stronger than our D
Kelce is gone. Maybe Peters and sproles too
Pryor visiting Redskins.
Not surprised. I thought of that earlier today if we really got AJ.
I like him more than Alshon, but i’m guessing we didn’t want to give out real $$
LOL the Browns might be a more attractive destination considering the dumpster fire implosion going on in Washington, THATS the least appealing destination in the NFL today
So assuming that we’re going to keep Alshon, we’re going CBs or BPA in the first. Just say no to Dalvin Cook in the first round Howie!
Or DE or OL… but yeah.
The ravens didn’t draft a 1st round rb since Lewis and the eagles have never done it since howie got here
Torrey Smith is our only “long-term” receiver?
we will have cap next year to sign alshon
And the tag
Until we draft Corey Davis after trading JMat…
you upset ODB, Ags and Matthews aren’t locked up for years to come?
Knowing Howie, he’ll probably structure the deal to be team friendly a.k.a cut your ass in the second year if you don’t perform.
Also signed Chance Warmack. That is a surprise.
I don’t know how you cannot see this as a positive move, you can’t break the bank with him knowing he has a potential 10 game suspension, you do it once he is clear. Perfect deal for us and Alshon
Someone tell Nelson Aggie to stop texting me, I already have someone cutting my lawn 🙂
Who gets cut?
The question is,
Who does not get cut?
Seems like we will have to find out before anyone signs their contracts right? No way we did all these 1 year deals with the 8 mil we had.
Exactly right.
Can’t sign the Ks w/out cap space.
Unfortunately, not Agholor.
Wentz
Then we commit mass suicide when the Eagles sign Romo?
and trade him for Cousins
Balboa
right but the Russian gets cut.
No against Creed, he has yo have Mick cut his brow or w/e.
oh right right. Got it.
cut me Mick
Can’t have both Chase Daniels and Alshon Jefferies on the same team.
I think chance warmack might be the move I like the most, build to be a bradham kind of reward signing
Carson must be psyched.
I’m betting he’s thinking that it’s time to get to business.
Off season practices with his wrs.
There’s only one dude that would actually show up. We didn’t load up on the motivated guys.
So can we still get pryor too or is that asking too much?
Boldin will be cheap…
The wide receiver corps looks a lot better now. Jeffrey and Smith on the outside with Matthews in the slot, and Agholor manning a radar station in Alaska.
Friendly reminder: everyone has to get on a plane and actually sign their contract. Thanks a lot for making this a thing, Frank.
It’s ironic b/c the pinned tweet on schefty’s IG is a quote of Alshon saying he wants to stay in chi town and win a ring
OMG we have a star WR again
Been busy at work all day, can someone please list our fa signings??? Thanks in advance!
Alshon
Warmack
Torrey Smith
Alshon,
Warmack,
Tory Smith
warmack OG 1 year
Smith WR 1 year + options
and fucking Alshon
idiot french
Torrey Smith 3/15M
Alshon Jeffrey 1/14M
Chance Warmack 1/??M
Alshon 1yr for 14m
Chance Wormack 1 Yr
Torrey Smith for 1Y/5M and a team option for 2 years
*edit*. Thanks guys! Very pleased so far!
Chance Warmack
Ian Rapoport ✔ @RapSheet
Alshon Jeffery turned down a multi-year deal with more security from Vikings, but he is betting himself long term with the Eagles and Wentz
always bet on wentz
damn, what’s that saying about Teddy Bridgwater 🙂
That’s sad, man
Very cool.
Jeffrey didn’t like the prospects of catching passes from Sleevie Wonder for the year?
Good to hear. If he performs well, he will be a god in Philly.
If he performs poorly?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNnkDjMVJqE
major shade thrown at sammy sleeves?
“Shit do I want to play with possibly two checkdown QBs with a bum OL in the cold ass North or Wentz and awesome Philly”
Seems like a no brainer to me.
haha I’ve seen rumors they may just cut him.
Once again let’s get a round of applause to Sammy Sleeves! Sam you da real MVP
Eagles draft a stud CB and they are playoff contenders, right?
YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH RIGHT NOW
Hey, man, it’s not like I said dream te..
I owned you once
I’m told here Browns trying to package # 12 pick and their 2nd for garapolo.
Please no. Stop making the Patriots better.
that’s my thinking too. I just shook my head no. He’s thrown like 30 passes. Somehow around here that makes him a sure thing. Pass.
I’d be hanging on the Pats waiver wire. They have to cut someone.
Is this the beginning of the return of Eagles legend Patrick Chung?
we’ll take Gronk.
what about RG3?
“Random fact: Nelson Agholor wears No. 17 because of respect/friendship he has for/with Alshon Jeffery.” That’s the beginning of a movie script.
Or a duel.
So Jeffery was brought in to mentor him?
Eagles sign chance warmack….1 year deal
Signing starting WR’s is a process of rebuilding….Rebuilding in the NFL does not equate to never signing a veteran and only draft players…
https://youtu.be/X9BUJxhk25s
Bennie U_U
Question: How can we announce we have signed those guys without having the cap space to do so?
please ignore wow that was dumb of me
Thanks
So by now?
>.<
I saw March 7 and thought that was free agency beginning, and assumed that was today's date. Then saw March 9 Top 51 rule. So I have no idea, clearly!
It’s ok , it made me laugh (not at you).
Anyone has an idea of our next year cap casualty except Peters?
Peter could be a casualty this year
I don’t buy it, if so we will be a casualty
I said could. That would free up some space. But really im ok with him staying
No he’s safe. So is Sproles.
I would draft his replacement. If they land McCaffrey or Curtis Samuel Id thank Sproles for his service.
If they legitimately want to win this year, I’d want to keep him. He changes games on ST.
McCaffrey would make Sproles expendable
I’ll believe you and check him out, I’m not up to date on draft prospects this year.
yeah he’s legit.
I’m happy to have Sproles stay. He’s a unique weapon and seems to still have gas in the tank. Team still needs a full-time RB.
Torrey Smith
Vikings interested in Foles, stop trying to be us.
Wish we could dump Chase Daniels contract and bring FOles home for cheaper
Maybe we can trade him to the Vikings too? (Daniels)
I don’t know if wentz isn’t hurt Daniels>Foles.
It’s all about Wentz now. Not in a position to worry about winning without him.
Yup that’s why I think Daniels is valuable, he seems like a good backup qb coach
6mil dead to cut now, 5 mil dead to cut in June. He’s staying.
what about a trade tho? assume we can entice a team with a pick a la osweiler trade
Trade is $2m dead, $6m in cap relief
not bad right?
Houston has a defense and weapons in place. They’re selling to get over the hump with Romo. we’re still building while Wentz learns. No reason to mortgage the future right now.
No mortgage, just a very small penalty payment. Our roster is every bit as good as Houston’s.
Right, he has to be traded.
Texans traded Brock Osweiler to the Browns. At this point I think the Browns are just trolling us.
Browns tanking this season for a good draft pick already?
Saints must be in pain right now, no market for cooks, Titans have the upper hand.
Yeah they lost all their leverage at this point. The Pats #18 probably looks pretty good right now.
Hope not, cooks plus brady would be an absolute nightmare for the NFL
They did it to themselves by asking so much for him. Turning down a mid 1st is crazy.
Bouye signed a reasonable contract. If they also sign Church and Campbell and don’t get over .500 this year, it’s time to fold the franchise. Lots of talent there.
dream teams don’t always work out
Romo released, as expected.
no trade offers?
I thought I read he was strait released, I’m mostly skimming headlines so I might be wrong.
back and forth all day.
Pryor visiting WASTEAM
And after all that, Desean Jackson to the Bucs. Winston has a big arm, good fit.
Don’t understand why we couldn’t have signed Jeffery to a longer contract with same average
1 advantage is his suspension situation. Next strike and he’s gone for a long while.
It is a balance between $ and ?
He didn’t want a longer contract. Vikings offered him one. Reports earlier said he was getting offers much lower than he expected, so he wants to kill it this year and make more next.
Would think it would be a lower number for one year deal
This is what we should have done with T.O. in 2004… I like this Alshon deal!
Big news:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/09/vince-young-signs-with-saskatchewan-of-cfl/
This will upset the whole balance of power in the CFL.
Prove it deals are in vogue whatever vogue really means. What is the vogue term for vogue?
On these 2 short term contracts we did, I’m guessing the Eagles brain trust decided that Wentz really couldn’t afford another year of shit WR play, so they needed to bring some big guns in to help his development along (ie experience what it’s like to play with a real WR corps.)
Wonder if Jeffrey fits in nicely whether we sign him to a big deal. He’s 27, so he’s kind of an inbetweener when it comes to our purported youth movement.
If he is healthy and deserving, I am sure we will try to keep him.
Wentz pumped.
https://twitter.com/cj_wentz/status/839958047690805250
Is the cap space supposed to go up again in 2018? It could explain the increase in one year deal with those vampire agents.
If we do extend someone next offseason, their higher cap hits will not start to take a large toll until 2019. 2018 will mostly be the prorated signing bonus.
I was thinking Houston should dump Brock salary to the browns for a pick and they must have been listening to my ramblings! Very interesting NBA like trade
ESPN has 10 people sitting around a table on NFL Live.
I thought they were cutting salaries?
Ian Rapoport ✔ @RapSheet
The #Saints contract with DT Nick Fairley is 4 years, worth almost $30M, source said.
That’s what Bennie is going to cost us.
and by “us”, you mean one of the 31 teams not named the Eagles?
Goodbye Bennie.
Bennie will get less then that. He do not have the sack numbers
Jimmy Kempski’s site just went down for me. Guess too many people overjoyed about not having to worry about our WRs
http://i68.tinypic.com/epm4px.png
Hate to see this but I’m afraid the skins will steal us bennie. They’ve lost baker
That’s ok, we’ll just draft a DL unless Bennie wants to take a Graham type deal.
WOOOOOO!!!!!
Good morning. 🙂
Wonder if Chase is up for a restructure?
A trade to Cleveland sounds better to me.
“Chase, would you be open to taking a paycut? That would open you up to the possibility of getting traded and finally getting your chance to start” would be my opening argument. Doubt he bites.
He needs to up for a re-structure of his living arrangements, as in Chase “re-structure yourself to whatever hellhole city gives us a 7th round pick”
Eric Galko ✔ @OptimumScouting
Update on #Browns draft picks:
2017 – 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6
2018 – 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7
11 picks EACH in next 2 drafts
which would you rather be the bigger number no. of picks or number of wins?
Chase and 7th for a 5th. Cut Osweiler. How does that not benefit them? They get a decent bridge and locker room guy on a cheap bridge contract. See Glennon and Hoyer.
Did you see chase in pre-season last year?
I know, he most have pictures of Doug Pederson and his mistress 🙁
8 top 50-ish. Impressive. Titans are looking like the model, though. Gotta have your QB.
Those are impressive numbers.
But subtract a 1st in 2017 . . . a 2nd in 2018 . . . and add in Carson Wentz —
And the Browns would have 20 picks plus their future QB.
Big-time miss, in my humble opinion, by the Browns.
Johnny Football hasn’t signed anywhere yet
Cleveland??????
Mel Kiper needs something to talk about…
Thank you Howie!
The signing of a true #1 WR eases my tooth ache a little. #Alshon #RootCanal #NoPainNoGain
If your tooth still hurts after a root canal, they did it wrong, friend.
The infection was so bad that I will need a second treatment next week..
My endodontist claims that that’s the preferred method of doing it anyway, coming back the next week to finish up. She may have just been trying to leave for the day *shrug*
His stats from the last two years:
catch, yards , TD , Catch %
85 , 997 , 8 , 67.5%
73 , 804 , 3 , 62.5%
Not really a #1’s numbers you say? Oh those are Jordan Matthew’s my fault here is Alshon:
54 , 807 , 4 , 57.4%
52 , 821, 2 , 55.3%
I’m actually happy to have him on a 1 year deal. He was really good with Brandon Marshall next to him, but has never really shown he is a true number 1. First and foremost gotta play to be THE guy. I think he is a good player and should fit in really well this year. He isn’t the second coming of T.O though.
Alshon was always injured last year, and when he played he was a shell of himself. The problem is that that is normal for him. healthy is an outlier for him.
Exactly. To be a 1 you have to…be a 1..for lack of a better way of saying it.
-edit-
You have to earn the stats. I guess.
Last year he was relatively healthy but had the 4 game suspension plus Matt Barkley, Cutler and Hoyer throwing to him. Granted year before always soft tissue injury. Someone get the man some Brawndo.
Jordan Matthews YPC 11.9
Alshon Jeffries YPC 15.0
Dink and dunk inflates catch% and completion%. It’s why some people think Bradford’s a good QB.
JM is not close to being in AJ’s league.
I know, I was just poking German for funsies. If Alshon stays healthy he is a #1 like my guy said. If he isn’t healthy though, he isn’t. In recent memory he isn’t. Let’s hope he is and stays that way.
Romo and Cutler are free agents, and you expect someone to trade for Daniel? No, not happening with that contract.
Well..Romo isn’t
touche.
Always perfect

Fake news.
La Canfora in a roundabout way got this scoop before the trade deadline. A lot of people think he’s a mouthpiece for Howie.
Man, if Howie could only draft…
Tom Pelissero ✔
@TomPelissero
Chance Warmack’s deal with #Eagles is 1 year, $1.51 million. $500K to sign. Can earn another $1.25M in incentives. Howie bargain shopping.
Wow, crazy. Has he bombed in the pros or something? I remember being really impressed pre-draft.
Be lying if I said I knew, but he cant have played well if that is his FA deal after his rookie contract and the Browns just gave an OG like 500million guaranteed.
He’s going to be competing with Alan Barbre for a starting position.
I think that puts Womack’s career in perspective.
Certainly hasn’t turned out the way he expected, but there are far worse jobs than being the #6 OL or backup QB.
Pithy.
Hell, at that price the Eagles should sign former Chargers OT D.J. Fluker, too . . .
More rekindling of the Stoutland – ‘Bama OLs bromance of 1st-Rd busts
So do we think Jordan still gets traded?
I think the Bulls would be crazy to trade him. He has won like 6 championships there.
I like him, and i guess the eagles will keep him because i doubt they will get good value. However depending on how Jeffery plays and the 2017 draft works out i could see him being allowed to walk if they need to spend $$ keeping Jeffery.
Yeah not saying I think its a good idea just interesting with all the WR’s we currently have
and he is the only with any value
What do you like about him?
I think so but it’ll happen before the trade deadline next season unless we get a good offer during the draft. I think we’re going to draft some WRs this year despite the signings of Alshon/Smith. Matthews should be able to increase his value now that he’s back in the only role that he can play. The question is what’s he’s worth?
I think we should keep him and see what he can do without having to be the guy.
We’ve already seen him do that. He wasn’t that impressive either.
as a rookie? I think this year if we keep will be a better indicator
In an offense that inflated his stats nonetheless.
Draft day trade, especially if a WR they like is available in the 3rd/4th
I have to imagine that Cook’s price has gone way down today for the Pats.
Wonder if he is still in play for a 2nd if Saints drop their price. Still could see the eagles making that move and jettisoning out Matthews for a pick. Cooks could be put in the slot for the year and moved outside depending on what happens with Jeffery/Smith.
Matthews is more valuable than the pick. Cheap contract, high floor, low ceiling guy. With his attitude, I’m sure he’d play ST. You’d get like a 4th at most, but more likely a 6th or 7th.
Which is much better than anything you’re going to get in the 4th round.
I’d take the 4th and run with it. Matthews is what he is, there’s dozens of WRs that are better than him.
Before we all get too excited today please always remember: Carson Wentz is not a top 20 QB.
Name me 20 you’d rather have. Hell, name me 10.
He’s high on pain meds.
No. But the Browns are still.
He will be by the end of next season. No, by mid-way through the season.
I’d totally be okay with a 2nd day RB now.
3rd. CB and maybe a DL for 1-3.
Going to keep beating that Solomon Thomas drum.
If he’s at 14, in a heartbeat
God damn, Howie.
Mike Garafolo ✔ @MikeGarafolo
Going back thru deals done today, Torrey Smith’s 3-year, $15m deal with Philly includes just $500k guaranteed. Other $4.5m in ’17 not gtd.
Basically, Smith, DGB, and Agholor should be looked at as competing with each other based on the contracts.
Cooks should still be on the table.
Jeffery and Matthews are 1 and 2.
Pretty sure that Torrey will win the starting spot as the #2 over Matthews since he can stretch the field.
Matthews in the slot and let DGB, Ags and a Rookie battle for #4.
Think that DGB and Ags are battling for 1 spot because you need at least 1 receiver (generally your 5th) to be a special teams ace, and neither DGB nor Ags is that. Feel like the depth chart will look like this:
1. Paul Turner (I make myself laugh)
1. Jeffery
2. Smith
3. J Matt
4. DGB/Ags (probably Ags due to contract)
5. Rookie who plays ST
If I was a betting man, and I am, I would bet we have seen the last of DGB in midnight green
Where does Boldin slot in?
Fullback.
I don’t see cooks coming here to be the #2..
.. Of course it wouldn’t necessarily be up to him 😉
Im gonna piss on you if you talk like that again
Wouldn’t mine a Jordan Matthews trade if we can get a Cole Beasley type slot receiver.
Matthews for Beasley straight up!
Yuck. Not that squirrel rat.
He’s so much better than Matthews it’s hard to quantify. He can actually make plays after the catch, which is better still because he can actually catch, which is better still because he can even catch in clutch situations without dropping the ball.
Whoa ..ok. i cant stand him.
And thnk hes 60% of how much you like him
I’d do that in a second.
With all our wideouts essentially on one-year deals, might as well just keep them and see what sticks. Unless a high 3rd rounder or better presents itself for JMatt.
I’m on a trip down in Austin, TX and just now catching up to the whirlwind for the Eagles today. Here’s what I’ve picked up, but please fill in any gaps I’ve missed.
1. Eagles sign Torrey Smith
2. Eagles sign Alshon Jeffrey
3. Eagles sign Chance Warmack
4. Conner Barwin cut.
Anything else?
Seems like that’s all for today.
You got it. Hell of a day.
What about:
2nd + Matthews + Kendricks for Cooks?!
Big over pay.
Why?! It’s probably the equivalent of sending a 2nd, 4th and 6th round pick.
I know it’s probably only playing Madden, but Jeffery, Smith and Cooks would be a pretty darn good WR trio..
They would be for sure. I’m the opposite of NFL guys though. I value real players more than picks. I want Kendricks JM and all my picks more than Cooks.
Leftovers from Chip’s era if we trade Jordan Matthews and Bennie signs somewhere else.
Lane Johnson
Beau Allen
Jaylen Watkins
Taylor Hart
Jordan Hicks
Nelson Agholor
Marcus Smith
Jordan is going to pop the f off this year. Watch.
If he can catch consistently, yes.
I think the weight has been lifted. Our little Eagle will fly
How many times do we need to cut and resign Watkins before he counts as a new hire and not a Chip holdover?
How many bad games has he had? That many.
Redskins finally get around to firing their GM
Thank god, they were getting uncomfortably competent
No need to worry about that as long as Bruce Allen and ole Danny Boy are there.
Now to fix whatever the hell is going on in Dallas, and the (football) world will be tolerable
Need Snyder to become try to replicate Halas and name himself owner/GM/coach for the upcoming season.
https://twitter.com/wingoz/status/839881495301001216
‘A’ today for Roseman all around. Amusing to hear people still complaining on the radio though while driving home.
Here here.
I admit when I first heard they signed Jeffrey that it was to the kind of long-term deal which is exactly the one thing I didn’t want him to do this offseason.
Actually, it’s hear, hear, but who really cares after a champagne day.
I was wondering. Neither actually make sense to me, so I just went with one. Nice to know!
I think it is similar to the “Hear ye, hear ye!” which updates to “Hey, hey! Pay attention to me!”
When you agree with someone, “Hear, hear!” updates to “Yup, you should all be listening to that guy.”
I’ll try to make sense of it for you. In days of yore, it was used to summon people in villages to impart important news. It’s also a cheer used in the British Isles to react to good news.
Really excited to hear what Tommy has to say about today.
Indeed. “New thread” will be most welcome.
How as a gm do you get two people to sign for 500k each
Answer: Howard Roseman.
So given career numbers I guess it would be fair to expect
80 catches from Alshon
75 catches from Matthews
50 catches from Smith
Barring injury. Big ask with this group.
F that. I demand 48 man games played from that group.
I hope not because it means Pederson went pass crazy and there were a lot of games where Wentz was over 40 completions.
That’s still only 205 completions.
I get it..JM dropped a few key passes…no longer any pressure on him…he’ll be terrific this year…
All the Matthews hate is misplaced IMO. He clearly doesn’t have good hands, but he’s a player. Definitely an out of the ordinary slot receiver–not the small shifty handsy type–but there’s a reason he has the stats he does.
As long as you’re not relying on him to be the chains-mover possession receiver, he should be fine. That means you need a sure handed big receiver on the outside…which it appears we now have. Between AJ and Ertz, I’d think we’d be ok on those 3rd and longs.
I’m not sure about this drafting-an-RB-early-or-not-debate, but a real threat in the backfield would put weapons at every level. If 2 out of our starting 3 receivers play well this year, that’ll be great going into upcoming contract decisions as we make the final shape of our roster toward a contender.
So what valuation does that put on Matthews for his next deal?
No idea at this point. If Matthews puts together another year like last year even with the upgraded competition, pay the man like a legitimate #2. If he’s the forgotten man on offense, let him walk.
I’m loathe to “pay the man” the going rate after what I saw today however.
Flipping Matthews for a younger WR that fits the offense better is the way to go. Nice guy and all but overrated as can be.
Zay Jones / Chris Godwin
Taywan Taylor/Carlos Henderson.
Stacy Coley/Josh Malone
I’ll keep an eye out.
Im not getting the Taylor hype, drops a lot of passes. 4Th rounder?
His hands aren’t an issue, seems like he has focus drops occasionally but not as bad as Matthews. I did see him trying to run before securing the ball more than I like.
Maybe thats what it was, seems athletic though.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/taywan-taylor?id=2557870
He weighed in more than I thought he would. He’s very agile, explosive and has decent top end speed. Taylor and Henderson are the two guys I want in the slot if we do trade Matthews.
Id want them in the slot regardless. Ive soured on Matthews quite a bit and it will take a lot to bring me back
I think both guys can play outside, they’ll probably be more effective in the slot at the beginning of their careers.
Desean’s deal…lol
How the F does DeSean get a raise coming off of a contract in which he under performed?
Something something water in Florida.
No doubt.
Speed sells.
It evidently smokes as well.
TBD
Terribly Big Discount or I’d rather see him traded if we get a WR in the draft.
Riley Cooper once put up the same numbers but there’s a reason for that too right?
No one wanted to be anywhere near the guy?
You don’t want to fight crazy people.
Cooper was crazy? Nah just a stupid redneck.
JM has the best catch % of our top 3 wr..by a lot. Someone pointed out that really it’s not as bad as it seems a few days ago. Turns out they were right.
I agree. Mathews is not the next TO like many hoped, but if you compare him to the other options he is solid and cheap. Don’t overthink it past there.
He’s cheap for now, but how much will he cost on his next deal? If I can recoup a decent draft pick for him, I might need to flip him now rather than losing him for nothing as a 2018 FA.
But wait. I’m pretty sure the Eagles will get a comp pick for losing him. Like every year…
I can’t remember when we’ve last received a decent round comp pick. It is absolutely criminal to let a guy walk for nothing if you could have traded him for value. prior to that.
We’ve already signed more guys than left in free agency, so, most likely no comp picks when all is said and done.
We had one WR who was NFL caliber last year and you are comfortable dumping him for a day 3 pick because we have a guy cut for underperforming his last contract and a guy with injury and suspension history? Not me. I will hold on to Mathews and wait for those eggs to hatch.
I don’t want to get stuck losing him for nothing if he won’t agree to a cost contained extension.
The Eric Rowe approach?
If he’s not in the long term plans; yes.
Hoping he would be HOF is really a stretch. He had been adequate but I can see what people are underwhelmed a bit too by him.
I’d give him an B-/B in his Eagles’ career given draft selection spot and expectations.
I don’t know that there is much actual _hate_ of Matthews, so much as recognition of his limits in comparison to his future cost. We’d have to pay a larger contract next year than he’s likely worth. We’ve seen the size of those contracts today. Is he worth tying that kind of money up for, when we could instead be potentially locking Alshon in for the long term? Does he really give you that much more than a rookie slot receiver?
There’s also the question of current versus future value. He’s got value as a trade piece now, and that value is only going to depreciate.
Matthews is a fine player, but not good enough to justify that many resources at that position when there are other, better players we’ve now got there. And he might actually be worth something in a trade.
I guess I’m not sure what Matthews is yet. There’s a chance he can be better–the guy could thrive in the role of a real WR2 on the inside. Torrey Smith serves a purpose–he capably fills an important niche–but I’d ideally like to see TS as a “3rd WR.”
Here’s a possible scenario: We resign Alshon and Matthews but let Smith walk in year 2… all because Alshon and Matthews played the best, and we can find good enough receivers to play the field stretching role. The cap is going up, and I’d be happy to give Matthews the market rate for a #2 if he proves it this year.
As for trade value, I honestly have no idea what he’d command. At least on my part, the market this year has been totally unpredictable.
Smith, if he plays like he did in Baltimore, is a better player than Matthews ever was, or will ever be. More speed, more separation, better hands, and he showed up in clutch playoff moments. I think Matthews is fine in the slot if we’re going big, but both Jeffrey and Smith have enough size on them that I’d want a shiftier guy in the slot, if it were my choice. And that’s not Matthews’s game, unfortunately.
This will do (traded way back in first):
Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 29 (G.B.): Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama (A-)
Round 2 Pick 11: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford (A)
Round 2 Pick 29 (G.B.): Dede Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 3 Pick 10: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida (B-)
Round 4 Pick 12: Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova (A)
Round 4 Pick 32 (COMP): Elijah Lee, OLB, Kansas State (B+)
Round 5 Pick 11: Dan Skipper, OT, Arkansas (A)
Round 6 Pick 10: Charles Walker, DT, Oklahoma (B+)
Round 7 Pick 12: Anthony Firkser, FB, Harvard (C)
Very nice. I’ve been following a no trade down with 14 rule however.
I could see us staying within the 18-20 range
I could see that as well, but I think I’d rather have them stay put at 14 and draft somebody who hopefully makes a real difference.
That’s my hope as well, but I’m greedy
As am I, but Kempski did an article about why trading down wouldn’t be a good move this year. It was a good read.
Was that the one where he listed our first round picks within certain ranges? (1-20, 21-32)?
If so, saw that- all depends on how the draft falls
Yes, it was. And you’re correct about how it falls, but I don’t want to take any chances. We need a superstar from this draft.
We need 3
That’s ambitious.
I’m not in love with this, but it is where guys fell.
Round 1 Pick 14: Sidney Jones, CB, Washington (B+)
Round 2 Pick 15 (BALT): Taylor Moton, OT/OG, Western Michigan (B+)
Round 3 Pick 10: Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State (B-)
Round 3 Pick 37 (DEN): Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 12: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma (A)
Round 4 Pick 20 (DEN): Julie’n Davenport, OT, Bucknell (A-)
Round 4 Pick 32 (COMP): Elijah Lee, OLB, Kansas State (B+)
Round 5 Pick 11: Daeshon Hall, DE, Texas A&M (A-)
Round 6 Pick 10: Stevie Tu’ikolovatu, DT, Southern California (B+)
Round 7 Pick 12: T.J. Logan, RB, North Carolina (C+)
I think I’m going to be target locked on defenders with early picks. We’ve all talked CB up quite a bit, but are there any pass rushers who will be worth it at 14?
Barnett? Thomas if he falls. Maybe Malik from MSU, but he’s hard to call-plus he’s more DL than DE
Yeah, I’m not sure if any of those guys are going to be steady terrorists of the other team’s QB. I need to get somebody to put the kill shot on Eli Manning that ends his disgusting games played streak.
Barnett isn’t Von Miller explosive but he works his hands better than most in this draft. Thomas just looks like a football player-smart, resilient, never stops; seems like a player Schwartz would love
Better on paper – 2014 Eagles with Maclin, Matthews, Cooper, Ertz or the 2017 Eagles: Jeffrey, Smith, Matthews, Ertz?
I’d take Maclin over Jeffrey but give the overall edge to 2017 group because of the experience of Ertz and Matthews. Cooper and Smith is a wash to as both are underwhelming 2s.
Big factor if staying healthy though for the 2017. I also don’t put it past the Eagles at all to draft a WR in the 1st round either and deal Matthews possibly either.
If you’d like to draft Corey Davis and flip Matthew for a 4th-ish, I’m good with that.
JM is 100x the player Cooper ever was. Cooper got stupid lucky in an offense the league wasn’t ready for. JM got stuck in an offense that the league solved.
Maclin over Jeffery is pretty questionable, but Cooper over Smith is just silly
It will be nice to see a competent group of WRs for the first time since 2014. No about that CB position . . .
Great first day of FA, now lets trade some players!
Off topic: how many WRs avg 14 mill a year?
to compare, the franchise number is 14.5 mill for WRs
Which translates to Alshon getting a little below the average of the top 10 WRs, right? I’m comfortable with that.
I was going to link the over the cap page of WR contracts, but their site is quasi jammed up.
http://overthecap.com/position/wide-receiver/
Answer: 5 WRs — Brown (17 mill), Green (15 mil), Julio (14.2 mil), Bryant (14 mil), Thomas (14 mil)
Well, Alshon’s not in the class of Brown, Green, and Julio. But I’d say he’s right with Thomas (if not better) and not too far behind Bryant. And Alshon’s only on a 1 year prove it deal. These others are locked in.
Market got reset by Brown this year-it’ll go up
Anybody else here hope that Alshon request #17, Agholor puts up a stink, and then Alshon kicks Nelson’s soft ass all over the locker room?
Chris Baker leaves skins for bucks… Sounds like a catch phrase. Still hate him for that cheap shot on Foles.
Chris Baker needs to die screaming of some sort of unpronounceable disease.
That or forced to have lunch with my X. Brr…
In either case, he’s owed some really horrible things because he was never properly punished for the hit on Foles.
At least JP jacked him up. I dont play in the NFL, barely played at the JC level. If I had played at that level I’d like to think I’d have gladly taken the fine for slapping him down.
True. Peters will always be the man for that. Shame nobody took Baker’s knee the next time we played him however.
That was one of the cheapest.
that has yet to be properly avenged.
I’m not a huge fan of big free agent signings unless I feel the guy is a lock for long term success or someone who will fill a glaring void. I would not feel comfortable locking Jeffery up for a long term lucrative deal bc I don’t think he’s proven to be consistent in enough some very important areas – health and off-field concerns (1 drug suspension already). However, a 1 year ‘prove it’ deal is ideal because it gives Jefferey all the incentive to optimize his play. If things work out great, then I’m sure he will want to stay and hopefully we have a chance to lock him up to a relatively fair deal.
The Torrey Smith deal is ideal bc we aren’t handing over much guaranteed money. He’s got a lot of boom or bust potential. To be honest, I didn’t watch him play much at all last year, so I’m not sure I’m qualified to evaluate him. Not a huge loss if he doesn’t pan out. But he could emerge as a very solid #2 outside WR.
Unfortunately, poor drafting/scouting/coaching has put us in desperation mode to secure quality starting WRs. The hope is that we improve in that area moving forward.
I don’t get some of the JMatthews hate. He’s been a great soldier and has steadily improved each season. He’s not a finished product and has many productive years ahead of him. Sure, he’s no legit #1, but he’s a damn good WR to have. We always talk about establishing cohesiveness, so dumping one of our few young guys who have played at a high level seems silly.
Hopefully the Eagles still have some $ to sign a few more guys. I definitely would prefer if we could sign a solid #2/3 CB with special teams skills. I also wouldn’t mind some OL and DE depth.
“He’s not a finished product and has many productive years ahead of him.”
What’s that worth exactly. I need surety in high level production, 16 game availability, hands, and sideline toe tapping before I can hand over a big boy deal to Matthews. He’s been great for a 2nd round player’s contract, but not fine enough for the money I saw handed out today.
I like him but he’s mediocre. We need guys we can count on in rough games and tough situations. As you stated…Too many dropped passes and too many missed opportunities to makes plays.
I can’t pay what Britt got today (or more) to Matthews if he’s topped out on production.
He’s just an enigma to me. If you’re a big and slow type slot receiver you better be like Jarvis Landry or Marques Colston. Otherwise I want a smaller quick guy.
He’s Marques Colston lite. Probably close in size and speed, but Colston had much better hands and was better at getting separation.
My personal belief is that Matthews will get better. He’ll never be elite, but I definitely think he can perform at a higher level.
I need that quantified and then placed next to a possible salary.
Too many variables at play right now. All depends on the health and contributions of Jefferey and Smith. Probably more so Jefferey. If Jefferey spends most of his year on the sideline or gets nabbed with another suspension, then surely the Eagles may look more towards Matthews. Also, if all 3 are healthy, I think it’s unfair to expect a spike in Matthews production.
In other words, Matthews can get better, but Jeffrey won’t sign long term and Smith will get worse? You’re rigging your hypotheticals.
I’m not at all saying that. I think we all know that we have a solid #2 in Matthews. He’s a high character guy who has developed good chemistry with Wentz. He’s been a lone bright spot in an otherwise collection of trash WRs. I think there is something to be said for rewarding your players. Again, if he demands elite WR money, then he can take a hike.
I sincerely hope Smith and Jefferey pan out. I just have some reservations. I am ecstatic with their respective deals though.
It’s really hard to be unhappy with the deal structure on any of the 3 contracts handed out today. I think they’ve handled the risk associated with the players in question very nicely.
How are we so sure Matthews will demand a huge contract? With the rising cap, contracts will seem inflated. I do think Matthews is worthy of tier 2/3 money (top 20-30 WRs), but no more. I guess the $8 mill per season range sounds about right. Crazy, but not so much in today’s NFL market.
The problem we have moving forward is that we still have major long term uncertainty at WR. Jefferey could bolt after next year or become too expensive to sign. Ags could prove to be an unreliable bust – which he’s done so far. Torrey Smith could easily continue on his downward trajectory. JMatthews may get pissed by the recent signings and lack of contract extension. etc. etc. etc.
I like Matthews better on his current salary than I do at $8+ mil / year.
Yes, he will demand a bigger contract. Look at what Garcon got. And it’s only going to go up. It also depends on who his competition will be on the market. I think most of the guys in his draft class who are any good will be signed long term to their teams, so he could easily be one of the better WRs available.
Jeffrey and Smith are no more uncertain than banking on Matthews. He’s just as likely to not produce as whatever risks they bring to the table.
Everyone keeps talking about this Matthews hate, which certainly doesn’t come from anyone around here. Most people who want a trade see him as a fine player who simply won’t be worth the money to us that he’d command on the open market. In fact, it’s the Matthews bromance that has me so confused.
Look at it this way: Matthews is a low scale version, for us, of what Cousins is for the Redskins. Just good enough to command more than you’d want to pay, but not good enough to be worth it. Luckily for us, we’re no longer in the position of being beggars who can’t be choosers.
Colin Kaepernick made the decision to sit for the national anthem again this season…at home on his couch.
I fully support Kaep’s decision to sit for the anthem as a form of protest.
That doesn’t change that his style of play at QB is a disgusting affront to my eyes and he should have been switched to WR years ago. All of this dual-threat low IQ crap needs to relegated to the dustbin of history.
you’re a fat piece of shat
There are better ways to effect change than shitting on our country.
Howie’s master plan
1. Drive up price for Cooks
2. Sign biggest FA WR in Alshon to one year deal
3, Sign the best available deep threat to a very team friendly deal
4. Trade Matthews for a 4th round pick
5. Trade a 4th for Josh Gordon
LOL @ Josh Gordon
We can’t have an off-season discussion without him.
Howie is truly considering all the angles here.
Optimists can hope these new talented players help improve the team, while negadełphians can hope the Yankees do well so they can complain about them becoming too expensive and Howie missing the chance to lock them up early.
What the what? Are you saying Howie wants to lock up Yankee players?
Strange, strange autocorrect. Fixed it.
🙂
So…can either (or both) new wrs handle the wr screen the eagles seem to run every third play
It may be a bit like Rodney Dangerfield not wanting to belong to any club that would have him as a member, but I am having trouble putting together the trending views on Jordan Mathews. Specifically,
(a) he is not very good,
(b) other teams will give up resources for the last contracted year, and
(c) he is going to get paid as a FA next offseason.
It does not seem like all of those things can be true simultaneously.
I don’t think as many people are saying “a” as everyone seems to think. I, and others, think he is a fine player who won’t be worth the money he’d get as a free agent. If he’s going to sign a team friendly deal to stay, fine, keep him, but there’s no way to guarantee that. We can take the money we’d need to use on a longer term deal (prob $8-$11M/year) and give it to Alshon.
The latest post on BGN comparing stats of our 2016 receivers versus our 2017 receivers is pretty telling.
Grouch Marx.
Yeah, you are right. Dammit.
It’s a good line, though.
Lets top 1000
