Mostly Quiet on the Tampering Front
Posted: March 8th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 276 Comments »Apologies to Erich Maria Remarque for stealing/butchering his great title, but it seemed appropriate on a day when there just wasn’t much going on. No player could get signed, but we expected more interesting rumors, whether involving the Eagles or not. Tampering day was fairly boring.
There was one big nugget regarding the Eagles.
Eagles have inquired about A.J. Bouye, but not expected to emerge as a serious player for his services at this time. Fluid situation
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 7, 2017
Bouye is arguably the top CB available on the market. He had a great year in 2016. This isn’t a case of Byron Maxwell being the top CB available, but not being that good. Bouye was legitimately great this season. The problem is that it was a breakout season for him. You are taking a chance on his ability to play at that level for multiple years.
The other big issue is simply cost. Bouye will get $12 to $15M per year. Do the Eagles want to make that kind of investment in a CB? Forget cap space for a second, is any CB worth that in the Jim Schwartz defense? Maybe, maybe not.
We don’t know how seriously the Eagles are interested. We know they called Bouye’s agent, but that could simply be a formality. You call the guy up, feel out the situation and then move on if the price isn’t right. I think there is a decent amount of that going on right now.
Quiet day by and large in NFL today. Not too many firm deals on the table. Sides most still feeling each other out gauging market….

Here is an interesting, if not exciting, nugget.
The #Broncos will likely lose Spec. Tms. Capt. & 4th Corner, Kayvon Webster. Wants more snaps at DB. Dolphins & Eagles have shown interest
— Brandon Krisztal (@BKDenverSports) March 7, 2017
Brandon Lee Gowton posted some thoughts on Webster as a low risk target.
Webster would have the chance to come here and compete for a starting job. He hasn’t started since his rookie year, but has been a key STer for the Broncos. One of the reasons he hasn’t started is that they are so loaded at CB (Aqib Talib, Chris Harris, Bradley Roby). It isn’t like he’s sitting behind Dimitri Patterson, Nolan Carroll and Bradley Fletcher.
The Eagles are not going to add one CB and relax. They want to add multiple CBs involving free agency and/or the draft. They need to build that position up. Webster is a terrific STer and could be good depth at the very least.
*****
Can the Eagles afford to do anything?
Eagles officially have $8,457,224 of cap space, as of this morning. Only Chargers, Chiefs, and Cowboys have less space. Teams avg. $35.46M
— Zach Berman (@ZBerm) March 7, 2017
The Eagles have several players to cut. That will clear up quite a bit of money. The team hasn’t cut anyone yet because they are hoping to trade a few of the players in question. Cutting those players now helps the guys out because they hit the market early, but this is a case where Howie Roseman is smart to hold onto them and see if he can get anything. If he can’t, the players will likely be released on Thursday or early Friday.
Why would a team trade for a player rather than letting the Eagles cut the guy? Control. When a player hits the market, he controls his future. If the team trades for him, they control his future. Sometimes giving up a late pick for a good veteran proves to be a bargain. Think about the Eagles and Darren Sproles. He has been huge for the team in the last 3 years. Great trade. The Eagles could have waited for him to hit the market, but Sproles might have preferred to play elsewhere. That late round pick turned out to be a great investment.
*****
We’ll get some more rumors and reports on Wednesday. Deals can’t be signed until Thursday afternoon. Until then, lots of talking. Lots of speculation. Even more waiting around, hoping something exciting finally happens.
_
Hey… Dimitri Patterson and Ellis Hobbs would have been a welcome tandem this year.
That’s just gross.
Thank you for this paragraph. It baffles me when people can’t seem to comprehend this.
You saw this in action when the Dolphins were about to cut Brandon Albert, then changed their mind when Jacksonville approached them about a trade.
[…] Tommy Lawlor Apologies to Erich Maria Remarque for stealing/butchering his great title, but it seemed […]
Dear NFL – Teams should be able to trade their cap space to teams for draft picks. Eagles could give the Browns a 5th rd pick for like 20 Million in cap space. That’s a huge win/win scenario for both teams and the league. 🙂
Yeah, the NFL could allow the small-market teams to draft more players and develop them so that when they became free agents, the big-market teams could sign those players away and give the small market teams more draft picks to develop for future free agency. Who needs parity anyway?
I had this reaction, too. There are certainly differences, since the small market teams could stop the bleeding at any point by just not trading cap space away, but it seems to create a slippery slope towards undoing the benefits of the salary cap.
but I’m surprised teams don’t trade for bad contracts more, like I have cap space, give me your underperforming contract and a good pick, and I’ll send you back some whatev player. [this is of course like the Bradford trade, but that was for a need I’m talking much more like a salary dump. Like the Kings – Sixers trade.
Teams really value their picks in the NFL. As we know all to well (ahem, Dream Team), it’s hard to build a team through free agency.
Well Eagles kind of set the market for cap space with the Bradford trade. Signed him for $11m and traded him for a 1st round pick.
You could do something similar with the Browns, get them to extend Pryor with a $20m signing bonus and then trade for him… but with the precedent we have already set they would be asking a LOT in that trade, probably our 1st round pick.
Going to be a fascinating off-season
The big rumor at BGN is that we are signing Kenny Britt (although this is being denied by his agent).
Of course it is being denied. Even if true NFL prevents teams ,players or agents from announcing anything until start of new league year.
It sounds like the DT market might not be as strong as some have feared.
That is good news for the Eagles, because it drives the price for Logan down.
Wait a second…
What?
Where did you get this info?
Cant remember now, but saw a tweet about Poe not getting what he thought he might get. Consider Logan is below Poe, that is a positive for us
My beer gut is telling me that Bouye will stay in Houston and that Stephon Gilmore becomes an Eagle. It’s just too quiet about the latter..
Yuck.
Please feel free to elaborate your sickness.
Me no like Gilmore. Done
Jim Schwartz may like.
Schwartz should get no say in any major personnel decisions. He has proven to be a coach who will play favorites at the detriment to the team’s well-being.
He has? Was it here or elsewhere?
Schwartz made it clear that he loved Jalen Mills and had no desire to work with Eric Rowe.
Kinda like when a new boss comes in and despite the obvious talent of employees, lets them go so that he can develop his own culture and grow the team as he sees fit.
Happens every day in the business world; we only notice because its football.
Depends on the business and which level the “new boss” is. New boss because he bought your firm out? You’re absolutely right. If the new boss is a middle manager that answers to the executives, it’s one of those 2 sides of the story things. He is often hired to bring in specific changes, but is rarely given carte blanche to achieve them. One of his/her jobs is getting everyone on board, so if he/she is dropping company assets just to be a big swinging dick, that will catch up to them. Losing assets to your inability to effectively implement change is ding on your performance, so you don’t fire employee’s lightly. Especially if said employee is young, cheap, and talented (like Rowe).
So potentially heavy on WR in FA, a second or third tier CB or two in FA, then CB, RB, OL maybe LB or TE in draft?
I think defensive line is an under the radar possibility in the draft.
True
Just BPA the draft personally. I wouldn’t take a QB or safety in rounds 1-2, but outside of that i would pretty much take the best player available at each pick.
I think we will come out of free agency with a WR and CB who can be reasonably projected to start (note sure what level that will actually work out as), and a vet CB/special teamer who can be 4th CB on game day and start in a pinch if draft goes strange and we never draft a CB in the top 4 rounds.
Add to that 1 ‘surprise’ FA signing – someone the scouts evaluate as an excellent scheme fit and below market value – could be Bennie, or a pass rusher, OL, RB, LB, DT.
Even safety, Jenkins isn’t getting younger and our depth sucks. If the safety can play corner or the slot or a S/LB hybrid in a heavy nickel, I would not be opposed to it.
Brandon Marshall signed with the Giants.
Good move by him. Seems to like the TV stuff. Won’t get much action with OBJ and Shep, though.
Yes, that was one reason he loved the Jets- he could leave during the week to work on his post-football career. He’ll be able to do the same with the NYG (would need to be agreed upon before signing the contract).
He makes a huge upgrade over what was left of Cruz; gives them a legitimate #2/3 outside/slot guy with size and it gives OBJ someone that can help channel his emotions on the field.
Or, we can enjoy a tub of popcorn as a boxing match breaks out at a football game.
That would be fun to watch.
They get a good RB they could be dark horse contender for the SB. Looking like Giants and Cowboys for the division right now.
Not in Wentz’s division baby!
I like the move by the Giants. Although – more issues for the Eagles D having to face them. Giants seem to think weapons are important and not relying on 1 guy. Team is closer to going deep in the playoff. I wouldn’t like the move if the Eagles signed him. Eagles aren’t ready — yet…
Not much time left for Eli. They’re going all in.
This sucks, not sure we can guard their WRs at all. At least we’ll know they aren’t trying to run the ball.
Deal is 2yrs $12m, super reasonable.
With Cruz gone we were looking at a lot more Harris, who can win a game on one touch. This pushes him all the way back on the bench OR takes snaps from ODB or Shepard which is sure to be poorly received.
I don’t see how this doesn’t work out great for us.
NFL Network career > NFL career at this point I guess. Honestly, unless there is an injury, this is a bad fit. I love it.
Anyone else feel like the Giants are blowing themselves up trying frantically to squeeze the very last ability out of Eli before its over? With last years signings on defense and now Marshall, the whole thing appears to be very much short term, win-now thinking. In 2019 what is their team going to look like? I think they are headed for a cliff, and they seem to know it.
Bouye sounds too much like Maxwell, both played on great defenses and are questionable as high priced CBs. Bouye was undrafted and Maxwell went in the 6th round, which proves if you have good drafting personnel you can get these kind of players.
Isn’t so much drafting well, its good development and being patient with a raw player over 2-3 years and then getting results down the line.
Not sure Bouye is anything like Maxwell, Bouye was the best CB on the Texans last year, matched up with the best WR’s and often had to work on an island, things Maxwell never really achieved or did with Seattle with Sherman there to carry the big boy load.
Not to say Bouye isn’t a risk – he gets very handsy as a CB, and draws a fair amount of penalties. He is also not an elite athlete either which can hurt him as a pure 1v1 CB. Lack of experience means teams may not have worked out how to exploit his weaknesses and with the better offensive players and QB’s in the NFC East he may get exposed at some point. If they like him – go out and sign him, if there are things they don’t like don’t. Eagles had huge success initially with Andy going big for FA CB’s. Nnamdi was awful, and Maxwell a disappointment (although in a better situation he was pretty good in Miami).
How many top tier DE’s do we think might be there at 14? I’ve seen mocks with 4 gone already (seems unlikely, but…).
Britt, Cooks, Gilmore.
Thank you.
I was on the Britt, Cooks, Bouye bandwagon. Might have jumped ship after hearing Graham for Cooks.
Well that is pure speculation from people. I would be shocked if the Eagles traded a cheap DE with elite production with 2 more years of control for a WR who is not top 10 in the league, and will need to get paid soon.
Agreed. Unfortunately everything is speculation at this point.
I love Graham, but when did he become Reggie White? The guy is a slightly above average starter.
You don’t trade pass rushers for WRs and then DE would automatically become a glaring need
graham for cooks, seems like a big loss w/ graham he’s finally worth what we’re paying him
He is being drastically underpaid, actually.
Yes, he should be making almost double what he is now– probably one of the best cost/value ratio’s in the NFL at this point.
His cap number is $7.5m this year– it could easily be double that number if he was hitting the market now.
I think you might be wearing the green goggles today.
Nah, just looking at 4-3 DE’s and their price range. Graham at his salary is drastically underpaid for his performance. He’s not Von Miller, but Curry makes $2.5m more than he does this year
You have a point there. Curry is supposed to be getting 10 sacks though.
Agreed, he “should” be outperforming Graham (due to his contract alone, not draft status).
I dont think they trade Graham. He is the entire pass rush
No thanks! If our starting DEs are Curry and Marcus Smith with no depth behind him we’ll be in for a long year no matter who’s playing on offense.
You should read better 🙂
I read just fine…I was agreeing with you
According to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, the Dolphins received calls from teams interested in trading for Jarvis Landry, but Miami indicated he isn’t available.
So a phone call was made, lol. Like ESP reporting we called bouye’s reps yesterday. Doesn’t everyone talk…
Seahawks gave AD a hard pass
fuck that guy.
suck a root fat queer
Ed Werner tweeting Texans fear the may lose A.J. Bouye to Eagles. Make counter offer.
I don’t want to pay a lot for this guy. Reeks of Byron Marshall all over again.
I don’t like the idea of being afraid because of what happened with previous players. Every player and situation is different. Scout a guy and make a determination if he is a good fit.
If this is true I would personally like it. Sign me up Britt, Bouye, and a Cooks trade. We would draft a CB early and be set.
I would love this move. Frees us up to not have to take a CB or WR in the first (But you still can) Plug the holes with young guys and then BPA. We have so many needs and depth to be added. Pigeonholing us to two corners will cripple our draft board.
Houston our old friend.
Can’t get gun shy if your scouts and metrics tell you he is the ‘real deal’ and a top 10-15 CB. This defensive system couldnt adjust to the CB play they got in the 2nd half when they were eviscerated.
If they sign Bouye and draft another high CB, it is ‘put up to shut up’ time for Schwartz this season.
Certainly seems that they are trying to go back to the model of the early 2000s when the defense carried this team with an offense that did just enough for them to win.
Little early to tell what model they are following at this point. In about 72 hours we might have a pretty good idea if you are right though.
I agree that it would be foolish to not look into signing someone because of past failures but this guy had one good season against with a very good pass rush helping out. I just rather not overpay for what may turn out to be mediocre talent.
https://twitter.com/Edwerderespn/status/839501332973223936
Everyone is so caught up on 2nd or 1st round picks for Cooks. Why not a package of picks. I would happily trade a 2nd, 4th, and Kendircks for Cooks. It’s an offer that would be tough to match for the Titans as they do not have a 2nd.
I dunno, I don’t add the 4th. Maybe a conditional pick next year. This draft is just so deep at our areas of need. Sooner or later, we have to start drafting better. Last year was a good start, but really only one early pick.
I suggested the other day that sending Kendricks and our 2nd this year, plus one of our 4th’s next year could get it done. They get continued compensation, we get a #1 receiver.
Good call on the agent using us
https://twitter.com/AaronWilson_NFL/status/839505643140677634
Love the hedging.
“I’m reporting this thing, but there’s a chance I could be wrong so I want you to know later that I didn’t say it for real.”
Sports “insiders” have the sweetest gig in sports. Who fact checks these clowns? And how many times do you see a local guy “confirm” a report from one of the only legit guys? All a joke.
kinda like political “insiders” hahaha
The equivalent in the corporate world is the “long-range forecasting” folks. Every year, they come up with a 200 page long document that is 90% “assumptions,” and 10% forecast. When the forecast is inevitably found to be completely off-target, they point to any number of the “assumptions” as not holding true, and therefore escape any accountability. I always wanted to land a spot in that department.
who gets fact checked less sports reporters or politicians?
In the theme of the last post, We definitely benefit more from the rumors than the agents. Other teams know the Eagles can’t outbid anybody. It would be like a car salesman telling you to hurry up and “buy that car now”, then pointing to a homeless guy, and saying “or he might buy it out from under you”. Agents want to associate their clients with the people who have money to burn.
Silly fans, that includes the signing bonus
still may be a bit high unless its a four year deal
https://twitter.com/mortreport/status/839509575413940224
Lol. $16m for Garcon in the 1st year?! If that is true you can expect that Alshon will get $20m…
The way I read that Mort tweet is that including signing bonus he takes home 16 mil. That wont be his cap number or avg salary
I didn’t read it that way. Either way it’s ridiculous money for a player like Garcon..
3yrs 20million would make it reasonable. otherwise see no reason he’s making more than bmarsh
Mort said ‘he will make $16m in the first year. According to your logic he’d be getting a total of $4m in years 2 and 3.
Something like 12M signing bonus, 4M salary first year. They have a ton of space and could frontload the contract to get to the salary floor.
Your logic applies that he will sign a 1 year contract. Also highly unlikely. No matter how you spin it, if the Raiders will pay him $16m in year 1 that will be insane!
Example: 3 yr/ 20M; 12M signing bonus; 4m salary 1st year then, 2M, 2M
Adds up to 16M first year; 6.67M AAV
EDIT: It will probably even better larger than that AAV, but this was an example of how the agent can spin it to the media about how good their contract is.
Also helps an agent if it has another client on the market and is looking to push up the WR prices generally.
He’s two years younger than BMarsh, and supposedly BMarsh took the hometown discount to stay in NYC and work on his tv career.
The 49ers have a long way to get to the 3 year salary floor. Spending big money in 2017 and then having cheap contracts in 2-3 years when they have rebuilt and can better identity talent makes a lot of sense. Raiders did this 3-4 years ago, signed a lot of upfront expensive older guys to get to the floor, drafted well and could move on from those contracts with almost no dead money once they actually had good ways to spend cap.
I imagine the deal is about 3 years 27mil, with the large upfront chunk of of it coming in 2017 to help get to the floor and compete later.
Yes I totally understand that reasoning behind that. However it is certainly not good for the Eagles if they seriously want to sign one or two WR FAs…
Thank you.
Read the tweet again.
I mean, I like Garçon…but why? Smith and Garçon, while very different, are probably about the same tier of receiver. If you want to disconnect by the SF years Smith is better and younger.
So while I don’t disagree with signing him and paying him ok money, how does this actually help that team?
Marshall just got 12 for 2 years, so I’m doubting this.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports said he would “be pretty surprised” if Torrey Smith did not end up with the Ravens or Eagles.
ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports free agent Adrian Peterson is more interested in joining the Raiders than the Raiders are interested in him.
So no one wants AD.
What does AD stand for?!
“ALL Day”
Abuse Dysfunction
I’ll take em
Probably not true, but IF TRUE, I’m out
https://twitter.com/JohnJHendrix/status/839516378839269376
#2 and a player not named Graham, Hicks or Cox. Anything more than that we should walk.
We should walk anyway if a 2nd and a Kendricks or Barwin. Spend the money you would spend on Cooks to sign a mid tier free agent and draft someone in the 1st or 2nd rounds. Would cost the same over the next 4-5 years and have significantly more upside.
I would add Wentz (which you omitted because that goes without saying), and Jenkins. He’s really shaped into one of the best safeties in the league, and proven to be a great “QB of the Defense”. I would consider Jenkin’s and Cooks value to be equal, and only because Jenkins expiration date and price counter-balance his status a superior player. Or at least close enough that there is no way you are parting me from a top safety and a second round pick.
Oh the irony if the Saints wanted Jenkins after letting him walk and signing Byrd who busted out and was just released.
I wonder if they would deal for sproles.
I’m out too. Shame. 🙁
Howie will stand his ground.
NOLA is greedy if they think they can get the Titans to give them the Rams’ pick
If the Saints turned down #18 overall for him, then I have to question whether or not they’re serious about dealing him.
Yea…he’s basically not available in a trade then
That’s the argument– draft picks have a 50% bust rate, even in the first round. With Cooks you know what you’re getting, but you’ll have to pay him next year.
Is the assurance worth the risk? That’s the hang up
No, what I’m saying is that if the Saints won’t accept 18th overall for him then they’re not really serious about trading him and he’s not really available, because no one is going to offer more than that.
Other than that, everything you said was correct. Just didn’t have anything to do with what I was saying.
Could be an agent leak, could be the team- hard to say; maybe they are trying to drive the price up but in the process they are over playing their hand.
I’d love for us to land Cooks, even if it took 14.
Could have been 18 and wanting a pick back, like with Pats, though Titans have a ton of picks i tihnk.
#5 – first
#18 – first
#83 – third
#100 – third
#125 – fourth
#164 – fifth
#214 – sixth
#236 – seventh
the “Didn’t bother with a decent WR in Free agency” Draft
Your score is: 11770 (GRADE: A-)
Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 16 (BALT): Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan (A)
Round 2 Pick 11: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida (B)
Round 2 Pick 15 (BALT): Dan Feeney, OG, Indiana (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma (A)
Round 4 Pick 12: Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State (B+)
Round 4 Pick 32 (COMP): Nazair Jones, DT, North Carolina (A-)
Round 5 Pick 11: Devonte Fields, OLB/DE, Louisville (A-)
Round 6 Pick 10: Jalen Myrick, CB, Minnesota (C)
Round 7 Pick 12: Matt Milano, OLB, Boston College (B+)
What’s the point of doing these if you’re going to accept unrealistic trades? You’re not getting a second round pick for moving from 14 to 16.
Re: AJ Bouye’s Cowboy Infantilization
So following up on Bouye’s 2011 tweet prediction (below) . . .
The Eagles went 2-0 against his precious ‘Boys, total score: 54-14.
Now way, AJ!
I have no problem with people digging these up, they are kind of amusing. But I hope people don’t read too much into these, he was a college kid who grew up a Cowboys fan. The only conclusion you can draw from that is that his parents are probably idiots.
I personally love it. It shows me that he loves the game the way we love the game. Honestly, I can’t wait to play him.
At least he didn’t insult everyone in the city like some current Eagles when they were younger…
I’m just havin’ some fun.
I know you are, wasn’t worried about you – but this time of year some Philly hotheads (who may or may not wear shoulder pads to the draft) frequent these boards…
JG –
well done
I think that’s pretty harsh. Some of them make smoke some weed now and then but you don’t have to call them poth….oh, never mind.
When asked if Mike Glennon’s reported $15 million salary should spark
talks about his own contract, Aaron Rodgers said, “I think it has to.”
Hard to argue with him, but with the amount of money he has already made shouldn’t he say something more like “I just wish they would get me a running back who isn’t a WR, and a defense that could stop Clemson”?
More surprised Drew Brees hasn’t said that. Be interesting if AD went to green bay.
Teams keep throwing money these dirt QBs and it drives up the price for good ones.
“Sometimes” I think having a max contract (say 20M year) would be a good idea. But then i think the guys in the middle and bottom of the roster would get horsed.
Haven’t really heard anything about Jeffery or Stills, but Desean, Garcon, and Britt have been spoken about. I’m not saying I want them, just seems odd.
My guess is that the Cooks situation blew those older rumors up, for the time being. Alshon and Stills may also both be staying with their current teams.
Haven’t heard much on Pryor either. Guess he could go back to the Browns as well. As much as any of us would like to go back to the Browns though…
read a story that browns don’t want him at what they think is the market price.
Also wondering why the top WR on the market would want to go back to a team without a QB. Said previously he wants to play for a contender. Then again, maybe his deal is already done and his agent and him can just keep their mouth shut.
Boy, who wouldn’t want to play with Mike Glennon. SIgn me up.
What a great book btw, All Quiet….
I would assume that if you’re not hearing anything about a player on the twitter front, their contract is all but signed and their agents don’t have any need to play the game anymore.
Interesting – though we heard B.Marsh’s deal announced, you want some numbers out there
A —
Marshall’s contract was terminated.
So as a 4+ year vet (vested vet), he immediately became free to negotiate a new contract with the other 31 teams.
Good point and one I missed until just now.
According to the Chicago Tribune, “indications at this point” are that free agent Brian Hoyer will sign with the 49ers.
Bills keeping Tyrod Taylor on a restructured deal per Ian Rappaport. God this day is boring.
But but but the Cowboys were going to get the no.2 pick in a 3 way trade with washington and 49ers. I was told that was a fact.
Looks like they will have an illegal gentleman’s agreement that he will not sign with the lolskins.
I want Romo to go to the Skins. Guarantees Cousins walks or gets traded, and when Romo gets destroyed by Cox week 6 and is out for the year the Skins will start to spiral into a truly epic fail cascade that only the Browns or Jets could look to emulate.
My only fear with the skins is that they will suck so bad that they end up with the #1 pick in 2018 and find a franchise QB.
Think Browns are calling shotgun on that as well.
Dunno. If the lolskins lose both of their starting receivers and starting QB, they are in trouble on offense.
Releasing Romo is like getting another 1st round pick
Isn’t there some astronomical cap hit in doing this?
see above?
Yep. Thanks.
I think it would be ~$20M if it wasn’t designated post June 1. By making a post June 1 cut, they spread the dead money over 3 years. Going off memory from the Twitter flurry I think it’s $10M this year, around 9 next year and then around 3 the following year. Probably wrong on the amounts, but the dead money is definitely spread out instead of all on the 2017 cap.
I was just looking too. 10M and 9M over two years is what Jimmy is saying, so sounds about right.
This is awesome. The mothership is second to no other team website…
http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/wentzyearone.html
Cowboys releasing Romo to the tune of a $19.6mil dead money hit this year, $8.9mil next year, and a reasonable $3.2mil in 2019.
Works for me.
Saw that they are designating a post-June 1 cut which means they can’t use his cap space until then.
$24.7m until then, will free up $14m on June 1. Plus $8.9m next year as you stated
They will probably wait to sign their draft picks until after June 1st, so they can spend right up to the max now, and then pick up 1-2 vet camp type guys then and sign their draft picks.
They currently have less cap space than we do, which is astronomical.
Crazy that we haven’t moved anyone yet or even freed up some cap space. Wonder if they are waiting for the new league year to start?
Still trying to trade them I’d imagine…
We must have trades in place. There is no way we are keeping Barwin, and there is no way we are going to stiff good team mates by releasing them after free agency gets started loosing them ability to maximise their value.
Which makes sense since i think Kendricks/Barwin/Barbre/Kelce/Daniel all have some trade value in the right situation… even if it is just a 6th or 7th.
Cutting Barwin after the start of FA would really bother me. Total dick move to a class guy.
Puffy, notice that he understands cap space.
I love that they’re going to be paying a guy over $30M over the next 3 years to play somewhere else.
As fans, we should only care about the cap number. I will never, ever care how much the owners actually pay out.
We said the same thing – Saints fans
Even more lovely is the fact that since they restructured his deal into absurdity to get undre the cap so many times, he essentially became untradeable. Just think about it for a sec. We got a 1st for Bradford. Romo is a quality veteran QB, even with all the injuries. If not for the stupid contract, they would have gotten valuable draft capital in a trade, which would have been just, unbearable, all things considered (and yes, I am still miffed by the Lael Collins shit..)
Kind of cancels out with having your starting qb on a rookie contract.
I don’t think that’s right. 19.6 this year, then he’s off the books.
Should we have any interest in DJ Fluker? Chargers just cut him.
No. He’s high talent, low performance. At some point you are what you do on the field, and he’s at that point.
TT staying with bills. Teams without a QB are going to be in for a long season
Like the Bills?
looking better than the skins, bears, browns, texans, 49ers, etc.
Who’s covering the airports to see if any players are flying in tomorrow? Who’s in AC keeping an eye on Britt, I mean, who’s covering Britt who’s visiting family? And finally — what happened to everyone’s “inside source or source close to the situation” on any deals? Starting to feel like those people never have a source…
See something say something?
someone has to report back? (claiming it’s in jest before writing it) — Next year, they should plan 1st day of FA on womans day and since the women will be out and about, maybe they can report?
I think we’ll start to see some cuts this afternoon as deals fall apart
deals are falling apart? Huh?
prospective trades or deals between teams and their impending free agents.
how do you know?
I don’t, but if you can’t sign or trade a guy, you might want to let him go so that he can do his thing in FA
ESP says Kenny Stills’ number is down to $8m/yr.
Is that your ESP or the Network?
I don’t think anyone on this website is claiming Elliot Shore Parks.
Elliott Shor-Park the hackiest hack that ever hacked.
Surely not. I have it on good authority (ESP) that he will win multiple pulitzer prizes and a sure lock for the HOF as a contributor, and if the Eagles do their job and hire him as a GM he will go into the HOF as a GM with 9 Super Bowl wins.
Still no thanks. thanks.
Stills is staying in Miami.

Not sure I would bet my house on anything notbright says.
Edit: although I hope he is right, I don’t want any part of Stills
If true: Thank God for that!!!

🙂
Likely be there? Hope so, I’d be as happy with him as anyone.

Rumored Eagles target
According to LaCanfora Torrey Smith will most likely sign with the Ravens, which would be the 3rd WR off the market (after Brandon Marshall to the Giants and Stills apparently back with Miami).
My top 5 are still available (I mean if you consider Cooks as well):
1. Cooks
2. Pryor
3. Britt
4. DeSean
5. Jefferey
Get it done, Howie..
Looking more and more like Britt rumors were true. Eagles have probably moved on to other things.
One Britt is not enough though.
I only read here. What developments since his agent denied?
None, Stills staying put, doesn’t look like Cooks will move based on price that was thrown out from Tenn. Alshon / TP still around but, does anyone really think that’s going to happen?
I actually believe the Eagles will either sign Alshon or Pryor.
Oh I see what you mean. With Howie man I have no expectation.
Appearing on NFL Network Wednesday evening, reporter Mike Silver said it
was his belief Redskins franchise player Kirk Cousins wants “no part”
of Washington, and would like to be in San Francisco.
Giants fans all excited for getting Brandon Marshall .. is that true, well known &commented on already y’all? ?
That’s certainly drives up Bouye’s price in the NFC East
yes 2 years $12m
They should be. He’s a great addition to that team. He’s a better fit there than here, too. A really good complement to what they already have, and potentially could serve as the alpha to keep young Odell in line and teach him how to be a man.
Sterling Shepard, ODB, Marshsll. Yeah none of those guys is gonna flip when they realizd they are the 3.
Considering that offense runs predominantly a 3 WR set, I don’t think anyone will be complaining, either.
except our CBs
We gonna N E E E E E E D booo yeah in a BIG WAY
we shall see
Eli not getting any younger. More weapons for him.
Read they going for Brandon Williams too. The front gonna be hard to run on. Pass pressure too.
This is the most boring tamper period. Feel like if the team is bad during the season i act least want some draft / FA wheeling and dealing.
Yup. It’s our one consolation.
Stills re-signed (according to rotoworld).
“In a wide-ranging column detailing the Redskins’ impending split with GM Scot McCloughan, the Washington Post explains the separation was caused by arguments over control and whether to sign Kirk Cousins long term, and the Redskins’ lack of support for McCloughan.
We would recommend reading the piece below if you’re any kind of an NFL fan. McCloughan felt disrespected the Redskins did not defend him when Chris Cooley spread a rumor McCloughan had relapsed into alcoholism. McCloughan also told people in 2016 he would have signed Cousins long term “if he had full control,” which “angered” president Bruce Allen. McCloughan and the coaching staff clashed over McCloughan’s preference of more-talented Rashad Ross over coaches-pet Ryan Grant. The Post reports McCloughan never stopped drinking, but “peers all agreed they didn’t believe McCloughan’s drinking ever hindered his job.” Per the Post, the Redskins and McCloughan are now “working toward a buyout.” Allen and coach Jay Gruden have won the power struggle.”
from rotoworld
They quoted the Washington Post article
I did this one assuming that all of our FA signings were complimentary players and the Cooks trade didn’t happen.

10 million a year for Alshon
8 million a year for Pryor.
What do you think gets it done for Britt?
Probably somewhere between 6-8 million a year and 12-15 million guaranteed. He’ll be 29 when the season starts so I’m not sure if anyone is going to get into a bidding war for him.

Barring something big changing, my understanding is DJax to Tampa, Britt to Philly tomorrow.
Maybe we’re hoping Maclin can get cut and we can go do that. Team can’t be all boo hoo about losing djax if they don’t try to get him when they can.
what? what does signing britt have to do with losing djax?
Narrative from a lot of people in the city has been like Chip Kelly ruined the team, got rid of djax. There was a lot of nice making between Lurie and djax (and other eagles) over the past two years. But it’s clear the two don’t want to be together that bad.
Ugh. Pretty hard to get excited about Kenny Britt. Can’t say that signing makes a lot of sense to me.
Guy is coming off a 1000 yard season with the same wide receiver coach the eagles employ. Not too difficult to figure this one out.
The idea was to get weapons that could grow with Wentz. Britt will be 29 next season. So apart from the fact that it’s never smart to sign free agents on their downside, yeah it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
If he’s coming here for 6mil a year then I’m fine with that. Britt is a #2 WR and if we draft some WRs then our WRs are looking pretty decent.
Britt is an outside receiver, we still need to draft another.
Yes we do. Signing Britt would give us some alternatives unless we’re going all in on giving Wentz new weapons.

Goodwin to 49ers
Calais Campbell to Jags, Malcolm Smith to 49ers, Jets sound like they’re willing to trade for Tevor Semian if T. Romo goes to Broncos – all from rotoworld.
Campbell going to the Jags? Well ok, luckily he’s not going to the Patriots.
I have the deal breaker for the Cooks trade. We give them ascending pass rusher Marcus Smith II and our 2nd. Thank me later Howie.
Nah we’d be giving too much, cooks isn’t that good.
You should have said ‘Nahjee’.
Please fill me in again: why can’t the Eagles still try for Cooks or Pryor after signing Britt?!
Who said they aren’t
This is the impression I get on here.
Then we package all three of them for Julio right?
People like to set their expectations low so that they don’t get let down.
I’ll be let down if we get Pryor though soooo.
Funny enough Pryor would be the best Eagles WR on this team..
from what I saw he has the physical tools to be better than anyone not named Julio. Just read too many stories about how he is a turd.

Britt deal being done so early makes you think they weren’t even interested in the other guys. Makes you wonder if they thought price would be higher
I hope we can still land Cooks.
