The Peaglers
Posted: July 17th, 2017 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 34 Comments »Doug Pederson knew this was a boring time of the year so he stirred the pot.
“You’re capable. … I look back at my time in Green Bay as a player when we were making those playoff runs and those Super Bowl runs there, and do we have as much talent on this team than we did then? We probably have more talent, right?” Pederson said.
Huh?
Uh, Douglas, the Packers had Brett Favre at QB and the #1 defense in the league when they won the Super Bowl in 1996. That was a very good team. The current Eagles are promising, but calling them as talented as those Packers seems pretty stupid.
Pederson did make a follow-up point that provides some important context.
“But we also had a lot of talent in [2011] here and where did that get us? So there’s got to be a combination of blending all this talent with the coaching staff, with my ideas and philosophy, to bring that all together, put the egos aside, put pride aside, and just go focus on winning this game that we have in front of us. I’m a big believer [that] if you do that, then you look back at the end of the season and you’re probably going to be where you want to be, and that’s playing in the postseason.”
One of Pederson’s bad habits in interviews/press conferences is over-praising players. It is important for a coach to support his players and show confidence in them, but overdoing it can lead to problems. Pederson is more honest behind closed doors so I doubt he is telling his players this directly. He’s going to be positive with his players, but I don’t think he’ll have them recording an updated version of The Super Bowl Shuffle anytime soon.
The comments about 2011 are important. Pederson was making the point that a team must turn potential into actual performance for it to mean something. That is the message he needs to hammering home with his team.

Just for fun, let’s try build a starting lineup of the 2017 Eagles and 1996 Packers.
QB Brett Favre
RB LeGarrette Blount
WR Robert Brooks
WR Antonio Freeman
WR Alshon Jeffery
TE Mark Chmura
LT Jason Peters
LG Aaron Taylor
C Frank Winters
RG Adam Timmerman
RT Lane Johnson
DE Reggie White
DT Fletcher Cox
DT Gilbert Brown
DE Brandon Graham
LB Wayne Simmons
MB Jordan Hicks
LB Brian Williams
S LeRoy Butler
S Malcolm Jenkins
CB Craig Newsome
CB Doug Evans
By my count, that is 8 of 22 starters who would be Eagles.
It is possible that by the end of the year a few more Eagles could win jobs.
Zach Ertz could be the best TE on either team. Chmura was a complete player, but limited playmaker. Keith Jackson was a terrific receiver, but marginal blocker and lacked ideal size.
Isaac Seumalo could end up as the best LG. Taylor was a solid pro, but nothing spectacular. Seumalo has a high ceiling and could be a breakout player this year.
Maybe Doug meant that the current Eagles have a better #3 QB, Matt McGloin to some guy named Pederson.

AHHHHHHH !!
I was
Clicking back in to soak up some Jim Johnson and literally fell off my tricycle with that huge Peterson mug in my face
Just like the scene in Animal House where they’re flashing pix of the pledges and they get to Flounder (RIP).
Comment cannot be topped.
This was certainly an interesting pronouncement out of Pederson.
Shots fired.
Just meaningless chatter that will give the media a reason to bash him for a few days.
Oh. I meant the 3rd QB thing.
I like coaches confidence regarding the talent on this roster. No reason this team can’t win the division and a home playoff game this year. ( Assuming good health). If the team finishes 7-9 and regresses ( Especially if CW takes a step backwards) then we will most likely be reading about DP being replaced. I sincerely hope that does not happen.
Honestly if we look bad and cant improve DP needs to go, but based solely on how we played last year and with the additions we have made, at least 10 wins should be with in reach
I’m not totally there yet with predicting a division win, but I can’t bring myself to call any of the other 3 teams better than the Eagles.
And on a side note; winning the home playoff game is a must if we win the division. I’m still irked from the needless home losses in 2010 and 2013.
I take Brooks over Timmerman (consider Timmerman was a 2nd year player in 1996).
I might be overrating Nigal Bradham, but I take him over Brian Williams or Wayne Simmons giving the Eagles 10 out 22.
Simmons was a stud at SAM. I went with Williams at WLB because Kendricks is so erratic.
I take your word for it. I just know bradham is stud Sam lb for us and looking up Williams and Simmons on pfr made em look meh
博客风生水起,佩服!佩服!
So Zeke punched out a DJ in Dallas and sent him to the hospital. So there’s that…
2 for the serial abuse of the girl (I wish certain law enforcement agencies would do their jobs properly, this should be a full year if there were charges)
1 for the shirt grab
7 for the knockout punch in the club
Add 1 for the horse’s ass “munch” routine he does when he gets a 1st down.
It’s summertime. Pederson was listening to Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” and thought, “Stir it up? That’s a great idea!”
I own this thread, now address me as sir
Desmond Howard was the Super Bowl MVP…they got us beat on return specialists…I could go on but howards average in 96 for KOR and PR yardage are more than sproles and he had 3 td’s…Sproles had no return TD’s last year….I have no idea how to grade the LS lets say its a push, I will give Donnie Jones the edge as the punter over Heintrich and give Jacke the edges as the PK over Sturgis only because in 96 Jacke was an 8 year veteran…if you want to compare Sturgis 2016 stats to Jacke’s in 96….Sturgis is by far the better kicker on the one year comparison…
To be fair, Doug didn’t SAY we have more talent, he ASKED if we have more talent.
Megan Fox will probably be overcome with lust at this astute observation, right?
Let’s add head coaches: Holmgren over Pedersen
Yuck .. holmgren costs you a ton of dough and no sure pist season success .. is he in The Hall ?? Man the greatest offensive NFL player ever sure Hates Holmgren
I like the bravado, I like setting the bar high, and I’d really, really like to see Carson Wentz prove he is qb#1 on the combined team.
No updated “Super Bowl Shuffle” and no “Dougie’s Watching You”
Lurie or Roseman haven’t come out and said anything publicly on what their expectations are for this team.
By making this comment publicly, even if it is a minor one, Pederson has raised expectations a bit.
Not a particularly savvy thing to do but for people who wanted a candid coach Pederson should be your man. He tells you what he is thinking and is at times too honest/frank for his own good.
I don’t know why he brought up that GB team to begin with but if the question was, “Coach, how would you judge the talent of this team vs that SB team?”, then the way he answered is absolutely correct.
His goal as coach is to motivate to win. If the players hear that he doesn’t believe they are talented enough, then the players might just fall back on that. What did Parcells say, “If you give players a reason to fail, they will take it!”.
Peterson saying they are more talented than that team might not be true but is irrelevant. He cannot give them that reason to fail.
Probably using the most successful team he has ever been a part of as a measuring stick. Seems pretty standard.
honesty would have been amusing though:
“They aight, can’t hold a candle to the 96 Packers but…meh”
Maybe if Pederson had replied about his goals for this season:
“To crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women”
The riddle of pigskin.

This is how I prefer to deal with NY Giants fans!
I wouldn’t say no to Reggie White starting on the 2017 Eagles.
