Gameday – at KC

Posted: September 17th, 2017 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 796 Comments »

Week 2 is here.

The Eagles are going light at WR and heavy at DB. The WRs are all healthy and if anything did happen, the way the team uses Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Zach Ertz and Trey Burton means they could get by for a game.

We’ll have to wait and see how the DBs get used. I think using Patrick Robinson on the outside is the way to go, but Doug Pederson mentioned earlier this week that he’d like to leave him inside and play others outside. KC’s receivers are faster than they are big so I’m not sure this is a good week to use Rasul Douglas very much. Do you play Jaylen Watkins outside? Do you put Dexter McDougle out there?

You can use Douglas against small, speedy guys if you give him Safety help over the top.

If the Eagles win today, it will require a big game from the guys up front. My prediction…Derek Barnett gets his first sack today. Elijah Qualls makes his NFL debut. I’m curious to see how he’ll do as a pass rusher. Qualls flashed in the preseason and showed the ability to get penetration and be disruptive. He’s going to play limited snaps so he needs to give max effort every moment he’s on the field.

Will new PK Jake Elliott have a key moment? It will be interesting to see how he does.

Big chance for the Eagles today. We’ll get a feel for where this team really is. Can they win? Do they play well, but lose a tight one?

If there is one advantage the Eagles have, it is getting KC after their win over the Patriots. The whole world has been talking up KC for the past 10 days. That can go to your head. Will they be focused?

This feels like the Pittsburgh game from last year… I’m hopeful but give the edge to the other team.

  2. 2 BobSmith77 said at 12:47 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Call it Chiefs 26, Eagles 13. Eagles get behind early, have to pass a bit more than they like, and Wentz throws a few INTs among the 45-50 pass attempts.

  3. 3 Gary Barnes said at 12:55 PM on September 17th, 2017:

This is one of those OL and DL in the trenches games. If our units control the LOS on both sides, we win.

I also have to differ on the “KC has been reading their news clippings and thus will be unprepared” cliche angle…Reid actively coaches against this and will nip that in the bud.. He has had 10 days to prepare and he’ll have his team ready.

  4. 4 BobSmith77 said at 1:00 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Yeah it is basically a bye week for Reid and he deserves the credit he gets.

Reid is 16-2 coming off a bye during the regular season; 4-0 in the playoffs.

Eagles are going to have to weather the storm early here especially on defense. Chiefs are going to wrack up their share of yardage today vs this defense especially passing yards. Eagles need a few red zone stops (at least 2) and to force 2-3 turnovers.

He’s the classic game manager. He won’t lose you the game but he won’t win it for you either. You need everything to go great to win in the playoffs with a guy like that.

There’s a reason Andy spent his first round pick on a QB this year.

  180. 180 xeynon said at 1:55 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I don’t hate him, but he’s a player with glaring weaknesses as well as real strengths. He’s a great blitzer and downhill attacker in the run game but he’s lost in coverage.

  181. 181 ChoTime said at 2:02 PM on September 17th, 2017:

never swim away from a shark

  182. 182 FairOaks said at 2:08 PM on September 17th, 2017:

The theory was that he’s not as good in coverage as he is blitzing or playing the run. And last year, they rarely blitzed and played the nickel a lot, so there wasn’t much way to use him to his strengths. He’s a good player and worth his salary, so the thought was it may be possible to trade him for a substantial return.

But maybe the usage was dictated by the CB play last year and hopefully he can get on the field more this year, and play more to his strengths.

  183. 183 CrackSammich said at 1:53 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  193. 193 meteorologist said at 1:58 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Yeah Torrey doesn’t have talent to be more than a mediocre deep threat. No RAC, no hands, no blocking

  194. 194 xeynon said at 2:00 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Hands and ability to fight for the ball are not his strengths. He’s a deep threat and not much else.

  201. 201 T_S_O_P said at 2:01 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Donovan’s deep ball wasn’tall that until we bought Jeff Blake into the QB room.

  202. 202 xeynon said at 2:01 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He has the arm strength but needs to improve his mechanics. Fixable problem.

  203. 203 ChoTime said at 2:03 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He gets it there, but it seems to require a lot of effort on his part. And of course, he misses.

  204. 204 xeynon said at 2:05 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Most QBs have to wind up and step into deep throws.. The Vick/Rodgers types who can just flick it 60 yards are rare. Won’t stop him from being an elite QB if he can improve the accuracy.

  205. 205 ChoTime said at 2:07 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Maybe I’ve been spoiled by Vick, McNabb, and Randall, who all had world class cannons. In any case, I consider the deep balls a weakness, and there is plenty of evidence that this is the case.

  206. 206 RC5000 said at 2:05 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Not really. He has plenty of arm.

  207. 207 RC5000 said at 2:04 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  213. 213 xeynon said at 2:02 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  214. 214 SteveH said at 2:04 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Yeah bad game. He’s playing worse this year than he did in his rookie year.

  215. 215 Gary Barnes said at 2:24 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  302. 302 Patrick said at 2:39 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Isnt that pretty much Blounts MO? Im fairly certain he is of the belief that the season starts around november/december and that theres no need to get in shape before then. Thats when you have a fairly good idea about whether its worth getting in shape for the postseason, or he can stay in off-season mode.

Carson needs to get his touch game together.

  310. 310 SteveH said at 2:48 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Touch looked good on that dime to Torrey Smith. He fit the ball in a ridiculously tight window to Alshon too he just couldn’t make the grab.

  311. 311 xeynon said at 2:43 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It looks like the defense will be good enough to keep us in every game this year. Offense just has to find a way to score enough points to win, doesn’t have to be spectacular.

    2. We still can’t tackle.

  317. 317 xeynon said at 2:48 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Jernigan is a definite upgrade on Logan. Bennie is a good run stopper but the best you could hope for in the pass rush from him was the occasional mop-up sack. TJ is a legitimate pass-rushing threat.

  318. 318 Insomniac said at 2:50 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Jernigan is probably just as good as Bennie as a run stopper too.

  325. 325 xeynon said at 2:51 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Graham, Curry, and Cox are all much better fits in a 4-3 defense than they were in Davis’. Still, gotta credit the personnel department as well – Jernigan was a big addition.

  328. 328 FairOaks said at 2:52 PM on September 17th, 2017:

8, all Sproles (40 yards). And one Wentz scramble if you count that.

  329. 329 xeynon said at 2:53 PM on September 17th, 2017:

There was at least one Smallwood carry (stuffed for a loss) as well.

  330. 330 FairOaks said at 2:55 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Whoops, yeah, it was cut off on the stat sheet when I looked at it. Now Smallwood has two runs, after that 8 yarder, so he was -2 on the first.

  359. 359 A_T_G said at 2:58 PM on September 17th, 2017:

If that kind of QB play becomes the regular for the next decade, we are going to be soooooo spoiled.

  360. 360 SteveH said at 2:59 PM on September 17th, 2017:

What I like is things had become a little uneven, but he settled down, refocused, and we delivered. After a decade of Donovan Mcnabb it’s so nice to have a QB who doesn’t get into a death spiral he can’t pull out of.

  361. 361 xeynon said at 3:01 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Donovan was a good, at times great QB, and way more resilient than people give him credit for. It’s the near decade of Kolb/Vick/Foles/Bradford I want to forget.

  365. 365 xeynon said at 2:59 PM on September 17th, 2017:

One underrated thing about Wentz’s game: while touch still isn’t his strength, he’s good at the back shoulder throw. Both knowing when to throw it, and placing it where his receiver can make a play on it. I can’t remember an Eagles QB throwing it as well as he does (not even Donovan was ever good at it).

  366. 366 Dave said at 3:01 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but he didn’t throw the back shoulder last year.

  367. 367 Insomniac said at 3:07 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I like him. He’s never going to win a footrace but he’s tough, nasty, resilient, physical, long-armed and instinctual. Richard Sherman has demonstrated that that combo can make a guy an elite NFL CB even if he doesn’t have elite speed.

  415. 415 xeynon said at 3:10 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Would really like to see this team add a big play RB this offseason. Both running games have largely been stuffed today but the Chiefs have a guy who can bust a run if he gets a seam and we don’t.

On a side note, I’m more annoyed than ever at Chip for trading Shady for a crappy, injured linebacker. I’m his one season in charge he might’ve stamped himself as the worst GM in modern NFL history (yes, including Matt Millen).

  416. 416 SteveH said at 3:12 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It’s not at all what he intended to do but at least that linebacker ended up helping us get Wentz.

  417. 417 Insomniac said at 3:12 PM on September 17th, 2017:

There’s some good ones in next years draft not named Barkley. Not sure if we’re going to invest in one though.

  418. 418 xeynon said at 3:14 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Barkley will be a high first round pick – we don’t need to invest those kinds of resources but I’d like something more than a role player like Pumphrey in the 4th round. Should be possible – Kareem Hunt was a third rounder.

  419. 419 Insomniac said at 3:18 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  532. 532 SteveH said at 3:36 PM on September 17th, 2017:

That missed Vinny Curry sack…… just like Chris Long missing the sack last week. We really really need to get our DL to wrap up on these sacks.

  536. 536 Insomniac said at 3:36 PM on September 17th, 2017:

    hate that fucking play

  540. 540 xeynon said at 3:39 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Game changing failure to make a play there.

  547. 547 SteveH said at 3:39 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Couple of big plays swinging the momentum of the game… Sproles fumble, missed FG, Wentz int, Curry missed sack… In tight games you need to have those big plays swing in your favor. It’s not over yet though.

    Fuck Kelce

  600. 600 RC5000 said at 3:55 PM on September 17th, 2017:

OL is the bigger problem. Weak running game was what hurt us the most today and McLeod’s injury didn’t help. Also missing Darby.Peters groin also may be an issue. Carson needs to clean up istakes and Pederson needs to be better.

Chiefs are a tough team to beat.

  603. 603 ChoTime said at 3:53 PM on September 17th, 2017:

A statistically even game, except for 2 turnovers. Depending on how good KC actually is, maybe not a disaster.

Chief’s missed tackles – not many.
Eagle’s missed tackles – stopped counting after like 15.

  605. 605 ChoTime said at 3:57 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  611. 611 xeynon said at 3:58 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Wentz (1) doesn’t “rely on” big plays and (2) wasn’t the reason we lost today.

It was our defense and S/T that didn’t make plays that were there to be made, not the QB.

  612. 612 ChoTime said at 4:00 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Would also have been nice to not make those turnovers in the first place. Or get a couple of our own. We were close, but not quite there. We played a very good team even — maybe even a bit more than even — outside of the turnovers.

Yeah, well you have to add in the bad halves with the good ones :). He was at 7.9 last week, so the needle is definitely pointing up from last year.

  664. 664 xeynon said at 4:16 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Dude, he was getting hammered in the second half. Got balls tipped/batted down, was forced to throw it away or make low percentage throws that went incomplete multiple times because he had had three guys in his face and nobody open, etc.

Take it from somebody who actually watched the second half – the dropoff in performance in this game was not Wentz’s fault.

  665. 665 ChoTime said at 4:18 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I hear you, man! KC is no pushover… still, the point of statistics is everything gets added in–hard games and easy games, sitting ducks and impossible situations.

  666. 666 xeynon said at 4:21 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Agree 100%. I just think we have to hold off on any judgments about whether Wentz has taken the next step or not until we have a bigger body of data to analyze (probably half a season’s worth of passing plays).

  668. 668 RC5000 said at 4:19 PM on September 17th, 2017:

No you don’t have to. It’s a team game. You have to put it in context. Chiefs are a great team so far. Running game wasn’t effective and Pederson didn’t run enough.

He wasn’t great but YPA wasn’t the issue imo. It was the mistake.

  669. 669 RC5000 said at 4:10 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He was at 9.5 YPA at one point in 3rd. KC took over. No balance with running game & shaky OL.

  670. 670 Insomniac said at 4:12 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It seems like Doug was limiting Carson’s ability to throw deep last year. I don’t think it was the wrong decision since Wentz could barely hit anything deep last year with his mechanics and bum WRs. He’s shortening the leash this year now that he has more experience, improved mechanics and WRs. Accuracy on the other hand still isn’t quite there yet.

Some of it is still down to his receivers though. Even when Carson has thrown catchable deep balls (and he’s thrown a few despite the generally spotty accuracy on them), his receivers have not made the plays.

  701. 701 ACViking said at 4:20 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I appreciate that the NFL is as close to a flag football — and hence passing — league as the rulemakers have contrived at this point.

    But, jeez, Wentz is just a 2nd year QB . . .

Can’t call running plays on 2nd and long most of the time.

  702. 702 ChoTime said at 4:59 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Yeah, after all, Reid doesn’t coach here anymore.

  703. 703 xeynon said at 4:27 PM on September 17th, 2017:

No reason to be despondent. KC is (1) an elite team; (2) an AFC team; (3) playing on 10 days of preparation time and (4) playing at home, which is one of the toughest venues for road teams in the entire league. This Eagles team was not going 16-0, and if you had to pick one game before the start of the season you thought would be a guaranteed loss, this would be right near the top of the list of the ones you’d pick. It’s also right at the top of the list of games they can afford to lose. I’d much rather they beat Washington and lose this one than the inverse, because an out-of-conference loss isn’t going to matter as much in playoff considerations as a division loss would’ve.

Of course I wanted a W too, and it was within reach. But if they come back with a win over the Giants next week, things will still be absolutely fine.

  704. 704 A_T_G said at 4:20 PM on September 17th, 2017:

For those interested, Wentz was the correct fantasy call over Newton, and it wasn’t close.

  705. 705 BobSmith77 said at 4:22 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Hunt was the difference in the 2nd half. Chiefs rode him to a victory.

One loss on the RBs and counting.

  706. 706 RC5000 said at 4:26 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Nah it was a total team win for KC. Hunt had a huge hole on the long run with only stinky Graham back. Many RBs score on that. Other than that Hunt had 12 carries for 28 yards and 3 catches for 28 yards.

This was a tough loss since we had a chance to make a statement and steal a W against an elite opponent on the road.

Still, it was an early-season loss to an AFC opponent. Those are the kinds of losses that are much less likely to haunt you than blowing games to divisional opponents. If we were going to be 1-1 after two games, a loss here and a victory at Washington is the combination you want.

Have to beat the Giants in the home opener next week (very doable – I can’t wait to see our pass rush go after Eli behind that lousy O line of theirs) and things will be fine.

  717. 717 SteveH said at 4:36 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Yeah I expected we’d more likely lose than win today… It’s just the way that it happened that feels crushing.

The good news is that we looked like we belonged on the same field as KC, who look like a top 5 team out of the gate this year.

We took this one on the chin, but we’re a team on the rise for sure I think.

  718. 718 RC5000 said at 4:35 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Pederson has to commit to the running game more and/or get it straightened out .

  719. 719 SteveH said at 4:36 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It’s hard to stick to the run when it’s getting stuffed constantly I think. Really the OL has struggled in both pass and run blocking, Seumalo in particular was awful today.

  720. 720 RC5000 said at 4:40 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I think KC knew what plays we were running so that’s on Pederson too imo. He didn’t adjust. Tough opponent but the running game really hurt us..

They teed off on Wentz as game went on. You have to keep em off balance.

  721. 721 xeynon said at 4:38 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Hard to commit to it when you have bad run blocking OLs letting plays get blown up in the backfield and bad RBs who can’t salvage things by making guys miss. Even when they have blocked a play well over the first two weeks, the RBs have been unable to break that one tackle that turns a solid gain into a big one.

  722. 722 RC5000 said at 4:47 PM on September 17th, 2017:

You still have to run the ball. That’s why we couldn’t pass down the stretch and they teed off on us. Chiefs also knew what running plays were coming. Pederson has to get the play calling and runhing game straightened out.

Sproles Makes players miss and Smallwood only had 3 carries so how would you know if he can make plays? Reports were he did in TC.

46 pass attempts to 13 RB runs is not going to get you many wins.

  723. 723 SteveH said at 4:37 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I’ll tell you what will make this loss feel better, is the Cowboys losing. We’re all Broncos fans right now.

  724. 724 Gary Barnes said at 4:37 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Huge pass/run imbalance….50+ passes vs, what, 13 runs? Blount with 1 carry for 0 yards. Smallwood ineffective. Sproles seemed to be their game plan option, but Sproles again can only do so much at this point of his career. Did not see Clement play.

This shows me again the Eagles do not have a strategic plan for building this roster or a team identity for how they want to play. If the Eagles are going to sign Blount, who has a very defined strength as a RB and needs reps to produce, one, they need to use him enough and, two, they need to commit to using him so he can be effective. If Pederson, Roseman, Douglas etc. were all aligned on signing Blount and using him effectively, something has either changed or they signed him out of desperation or to have a name guy.

The OL played better overall, but passing 50+ times eventually wears them down. Seumalo struggled, but the rest were at least solid and gave Wentz a good amount of time in the pocket.

Wentz had a mixed game, but showed a lot of moxie and toughness playing in a loud stadium against a very good D that knew he was going to pass every play. He does hold onto the ball too long, take too many sacks and make some bad decisions, but this was a hard assignment for a young QB and his HC did not make it any easier.

  725. 725 Fufina said at 4:40 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Blount has never needed reps to produce his entire NFL career. Has been a short yardage/late game bruiser his entire career, especially with the patriots (barring 2016).

Run pass ratio really is not that vital in a west coast system, and it only go that extremely unbalanced late when they had to pass against the clock trying to catch up.

  726. 726 Gary Barnes said at 4:46 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Blount has said himself he needs enough reps to get into a rhythm – he said it just last week after the first game.

Run/pass ratio does matter – balance is needed so a defense does not know what is coming, so our young QB can develop effectively, so our young QB does not get killed and so the opposing defense has to play every facet of the offense.

  727. 727 Gary Barnes said at 4:47 PM on September 17th, 2017:

They ran the ball 8 times in the first half and 5 times in the second half. That is HORRIBLE and Pederson rightly stated in the post-game PC that the run game is broken and needs to be fixed. If Reid had done that here, he would have been and was routinely killed.

  728. 728 RC5000 said at 5:04 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Totally agree the lack of running game undid us today the most of anything. They need to commit to it and straighten it out.

  729. 729 RC5000 said at 5:06 PM on September 17th, 2017:

They need a much better pass to run balance in this league .

  730. 730 scratcherk said at 4:42 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Id disagree and say our identity is pass heavy, whether you like that or not

  731. 731 Gary Barnes said at 5:03 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Certainly has been that way these first two games. And it was not just in second halves or 4th quarters. Pederson has passed overwhelmingly from the first snap.

  732. 732 xeynon said at 4:42 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I have mixed feelings about the running game thing. Wentz was able to move the ball through the air. Whenever they went to the run, it seemed like it got stuffed and we ended up in second or third and long, unless it was Sproles carrying the ball, and as you say you can’t give it to him 25 times a game.

They need to improve their ability to run the ball for sure, but I think if they’d prioritized it here it would have lessened their chances to win this particular game. So it’s tough to fault Doug for leaning so heavily on what was working.

  733. 733 BobSmith77 said at 4:48 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Not going to happen with Kelce and Seamulo especially against a 3-4 defense.

  734. 734 Gary Barnes said at 5:00 PM on September 17th, 2017:

But it only worked sporadically which is the point.

Wentz got sacked 6 times, threw one mind boggling INT under pressure, almost lost a fumble under pressure and was generally chased or harassed in and out of the pocket all day. Why? Because the Chiefs D knew they were only going to pass and could rush without worrying about the run. That INT unfortunately led to the winning TD for the Chiefs.

The pass game had success, sure, but we left points on the field and it places Wentz in a situation where he has to be perfect and the OL has zero chance to impose their will. They are back pedaling the whole game and eventually wore down.

  735. 735 RC5000 said at 5:12 PM on September 17th, 2017:

There’s no way I wants 46 passes to 13 runs by RBs and Wentz to be teed off on. If it continues he’ll get injured too. But it was a tough opponent.

  736. 736 RC5000 said at 5:02 PM on September 17th, 2017:

They have a strategic plan it’s probably just not on your timetable. I didn’t think we were getting everything this year.

  737. 737 Gary Barnes said at 5:14 PM on September 17th, 2017:

My timetable does not matter, I want them to win a SB every year like any fan. The key is what is their timetable? I’d love to know and understand how they plan to put the pieces together. It is a difficult process – but I do not see a present or future at RB so far this season.

You didn’t think we should expect to have an effective run game this season?

With a young developing QB, it is critical to relieve pressure off him and not have him taking regular hits/sacks every game. Plus in combo with our good D, it certainly would help to have an effective run game to help run clock and control games.

  738. 738 RC5000 said at 5:47 PM on September 17th, 2017:

They clearly went for D – Barnett, Jernigan, Jones, and Douglas… no OL or RB at top of draft and that was ok with me. We tried dream team, fans said build through the draft, now they don’t have patience to do that?

Shit they didn’t have any WRs when McNabb started until they got T.O.

It’s year 2 and 1st for Wentz when he was man in camp.

Defense and WRs are also critical.

You have expectation of winning Super Bowls instantly? Really …that’s not building a roster or team to me. That’s expecting magic.

  739. 739 CrackSammich said at 4:48 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Alright, friends. I’m not sticking around for the postgame butthurt. Same time next week?

  740. 740 SteveH said at 4:51 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Gotta watch the Cowboys lose. That will make things feel a lot better.

  741. 741 Tumtum said at 4:49 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Noland Carroll doing Noland Carroll things.

  742. 742 Dave said at 5:32 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I’m not a huge fan of Mills, but I’d take him in a heartbeat over Nolan No-Look Carroll.

  743. 743 Tumtum said at 5:33 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Mills is really stepping up for a young guy, drafted in the 6th round. I have nothing but respect for him, and really think he is an asset at the moment.

  744. 744 Dave said at 5:41 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He didn’t step up last week.

  745. 745 Tumtum said at 10:22 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Jumping up and making a great play on the ball in the endzone, saving a TD isn’t? Endzone int?

  746. 746 Dave said at 10:25 PM on September 17th, 2017:

The end zone into was due to a blitzes rushing Cousins into a throw right into his hands. His receiver was open for a TD but the pass was nowhere near the receiver.

He gave up 10 passes for over 100 yards in 15 attempts. I don’t know how that could be qualified as anything other than poor. Just because he didn’t give up a 75 yard TD does not make it a good game.

  747. 747 Tumtum said at 11:08 PM on September 17th, 2017:

That wasn’t his guy. He was in zone. How many free INTs have we seen dropped and then lost a game over the years? Give credit where credit due man. He is the best 7th round pick I can ever remember.

  748. 748 Dave said at 7:29 AM on September 18th, 2017:

10 catches for over a hundred yards but let’s give the guy credit for catching a ball thrown right at him because other defensive backs have stone hands.

  749. 749 Tumtum said at 1:38 PM on September 18th, 2017:

I guess we will see what Tommy has to say in the DGR and then pick this up after.

  750. 750 Dave said at 2:59 PM on September 18th, 2017:

    That was last week’s game.

  751. 751 Tumtum said at 6:09 PM on September 18th, 2017:

Oh got mixed up in the different conversations. DGR from last week seemed to agree with me though. He looks good to me this year.

Shit I expected to get gutted by Hill and we didn’t . Even when McLeod got hurt. In my book everyone in the secondary gets a gold star.

  752. 752 Dave said at 6:44 PM on September 18th, 2017:

I’m was very happy with the DB play this week. I figured Alex Smith would be under pressure and take the check-downs. It seems the philosophy so far this season is allowing underneath completions and the tighten up the coverage in the red zone when the field is shortened.

I fully expect Mills will be relegated to the bench next year with Darby and Jones starting and Rasul manning the slot.

  753. 753 Tumtum said at 8:29 PM on September 18th, 2017:

One of the biggest things to me all through the last game was how they would allow those underneath catches, but actually doing a terrific job of coming up to make tackles.

  754. 754 Dave said at 8:43 PM on September 18th, 2017:

Rasul Douglas and Mills are outstanding at tackling. Far cry from the Assante/Lito days of avoiding contact.

  755. 755 SteveH said at 4:52 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It could be worse, Trevor Siemian could be our QB. How did he miss Demaryius Thomas there.

  756. 756 Tumtum said at 4:52 PM on September 17th, 2017:

You know I was thinking about the big plays and then I got to thinking about the McLeod injury. Coincident? Think not.

  757. 757 RC5000 said at 4:53 PM on September 17th, 2017:

The Eagles had 46 pass attempts and 13 rushes by RBs. You can’t win much with that imbalance. Credit to KC too but we can’t keep doing that.

  758. 758 Gary Barnes said at 5:20 PM on September 17th, 2017:

It was worse, Wentz scrambled 4 times when pass plays broke down too.

  759. 759 Tumtum said at 4:57 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Watching Rob Kelly carve up a good Stl. D makes me like our D even more.

  763. 763 BobSmith77 said at 5:09 PM on September 17th, 2017:

This was a very Reid-esque game including the post game where Pederson gave generic answers about needing to improve things & giving credit to the other team in the post-game press conference.

Pederson seems like he is learning a bit in regards to the post-game press conference. Going to get criticized to a degree regardless and even more so when the Eagles’ lose. Why give the Eagles’ beat writers any red meat or candidly answer a question?

  764. 764 Dave said at 5:30 PM on September 17th, 2017:

McLane and Roob don’t need red meat, they can sling it with or without any explanations.

  765. 765 ChoTime said at 5:43 PM on September 17th, 2017:

The run/pass ratio, the gameplan to put too much weight on one man’s shoulders, reminds one of mid-late Reid/Eagles.

  766. 766 BobSmith77 said at 5:13 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Wentz got sacked a career-high 6 times today and hit another 10 times officially (little debate on the post-game about that number).

Wentz isn’t going to make it through the season taking anywhere near that kind of weekly punishment.

  767. 767 mksp said at 5:14 PM on September 17th, 2017:

a lot of that was on him

  768. 768 RC5000 said at 5:15 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I put it more on lack of a running game and KC teeing off on him.

  769. 769 BobSmith77 said at 5:17 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Some of it was but 4 of those sacks came in the 2nd half when they got behind and Chiefs unleashed their share of pressure especially in the interior.

Ertz had a good game receiving but he got blown up a few times on pass production today. Houston went right around him on his sack.

RB blitz pickup wasn’t much better. Sproles is just too small to pick up blitzes up the middle.

  770. 770 mksp said at 5:21 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He needs to pull the trigger when he has time. Make some NFL throws. Can’t wait for someone to get wide open every play. Kind of down on him after this game.

  771. 771 SteveH said at 5:14 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I think Wentz is in that Cam Newton/Roethlisberger mold, can take an obscene amount of punishment and keep on trucking.

  772. 772 Gary Barnes said at 5:28 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Both those QB have been injured/banged up a lot during their careers – not what I’d like to emulate with Wentz. I’d like an Eli-like career for Carson.

  773. 773 Dave said at 5:29 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Kansas City and Washington both had good defensive lines. Eventually we’ll play a team with a good secondary and bad defensive line.

  774. 774 BobSmith77 said at 5:25 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Still don’t know what to make of Wentz’s performance today. Made some nice plays with his legs & a few nice throws including the TD to Agholor. Also had at least 4 drops again today (Smith 2, Agholor 1, Jeffrey 1).

Pederson said Wentz threw some nice deep balls today that were accurate in the post game. I bet the numbers on his pass attempts on 20+ yards would refute that and the game tape.

Struggled again today with the screen passes and should have just thrown it away on the deflected INT. Also had 3-4 balls that the Chiefs’ DBs/LBs dropped and could have intercepted too.

I guess I would say it was satisfactory and the coach asking him to do too much like it a lot way too often in the 2nd half last year.

  775. 775 Dave said at 5:28 PM on September 17th, 2017:

What would you do if you’re offensive line cannot open holes for the running game? Pass the ball or keep getting stuffed for no gain?

  776. 776 BobSmith77 said at 5:33 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Sproles ran fairly effectively and they had 3 carries to Smalwood/0 to Blount.

Media guys are going to pound on Pederson about it this week and there is some valid points of criticism.

  777. 777 A_T_G said at 5:34 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I’d use a hard count to keep the DL from teeing off quite so much.

  778. 778 Dave said at 5:40 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I don’t think that was possible today with the noise level. At home, yes.

  779. 779 Gary Barnes said at 5:37 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I would have Wentz run more which he did and get the screen game going

  780. 780 ChoTime said at 5:42 PM on September 17th, 2017:

    6.3 yards/carry by my count.

  781. 781 Dave said at 5:57 PM on September 17th, 2017:

QB scrambles inflate that greatly. Wentz was 4 for 55.

  782. 782 ChoTime said at 6:03 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Still 4 YPC without the scrambles. You can work with that.

  783. 783 Dave said at 6:25 PM on September 17th, 2017:

The gains were in the first quarter. After that, little to no running room.

  784. 784 RC5000 said at 5:32 PM on September 17th, 2017:

He was very good through the tipped ball int. Still expect growing pains and it was a tough opponent and place to play.

I have always said he makes a big mistake 1 or 2 times a game and that’s my biggest concern with him. If you do that you have to be like Favre and pull it out in the end.

  785. 785 Gary Barnes said at 5:34 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Wentz was up against it today even before Pederson went pass-heavy and largely ignored the run game.

KC has a very good D and Arrowhead is very tough to play in. The INT was an attempt by Wentz to throw it away according to his PC, but it bounced off a helmet and was an easy pick. Bad execution unfortunately.

Wentz is really good at the mid-range throws, flawless really. The touch on short balls is erratic and the long ball needs work. 18 games into his career, it will hopefully come with more time.

  786. 786 Tumtum said at 5:37 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Usually plays like the ones where Smith “dropped” it, you call those a PBU. If I am not wrong…

I’m probably a bit down on Carson honestly. I feel like his touch outside the hash marks really needs improvement.

  787. 787 Gary Barnes said at 5:26 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Play calling and run/pass ratio rants aside, this team overall played a tough, strong and relentless game vs a very good opponent on the road. Kudos for that.

Any word on McLeod or Watkins injuries?

  788. 788 BobSmith77 said at 5:27 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Play of the game though was the Curry missed sack and Smith somehow scrambling for a 1st down.

I don’t know how Curry missed wrapping Smith up when he had a clear shot at him. Chiefs have to punt there if Smith gets dropped & it is still a 13-13 game.

  789. 789 Tumtum said at 5:34 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Is it bad I feel like he was tired, and he kind of half-assed it after beating his man?

  790. 790 Gary Barnes said at 5:39 PM on September 17th, 2017:

I think that is unfair – Curry played hard from what I saw and the missed sacks seemed to be a result of over-running Smith rather than dogging it

  791. 791 Tumtum said at 10:22 PM on September 17th, 2017:

  793. 793 BobSmith77 said at 5:34 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Chiefs’ defense really impressed me today even without Berry and Peters supposedly at 80-90%. Logan had a pretty good game too and was able to cause problems for Kelce (big shock) most of the game.

Did a nice job of mixing up the pressure in the 2nd half and using Sorensen in some creative ways to generate pressure on a few blitzes.

  794. 794 Tumtum said at 5:35 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Hard for me to evaluate interior O-line, but I wasn’t able to see any plays where I could point Kelce out for something bad. Seo made him look bad a couple times for sure though.

  795. 795 BobSmith77 said at 5:39 PM on September 17th, 2017:

Seumalo gave up 3 sacks and 3 QBs hit today. Woof.

Curious to see other OL stats and if this was the worst game in pass protection for an Eagles’ OL since the infamous Winston Justice debut vs Giants.
