Injury Update

For once, the injury situation actually might favor the Eagles.

That’s big news. Norman is the best CB for the Skins. Take him out and Alshon Jeffrey should have the upper hand on whoever tries to cover him.

The Skins have some depth at CB, but no one as good as Norman. Bashaud Breeland is the other usual starter and he’s banged up right now. It sounds like he’ll play, which could actually be a good thing. Breeland is more of a big guy than an athlete. If you put him on Torrey Smith, Smith can run by him. Jeffrey is just flat out better than Breeland.

Quinton Dunbar and Kendall Fuller have each started games this year so they do have some experience. Rookie Fabian Moreau is very talented, but hasn’t played as much.

DE Jonathan Allen went on IR this week. The rookie hasn’t had a huge year, but started all five games. Losing him will take a key body out of the front seven.

LT Trent Williams is hurting.

The knee injury that Trent Williams is dealing with ultimately will require surgery that’s typically followed by a five- to six-month recovery process, the left tackle told The Washington Post on Saturday.

But Williams’s hope is to continue playing despite the pain, as he did in last week’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers, and delay surgery until after the 2017 season.

“The ligament that holds my kneecap in the socket needs to be reconstructed at some point,” said Williams, a five-time Pro Bowl honoree. “It’s like a five-, six-month surgery, I think, in recovery time. I’m just trying to hold off on that as long as possible. Hopefully get through the season and revisit it in the offseason.”

He’s clearly tougher than I am.

Williams’ backup is out for this game so Trent basically has to play. It will be interesting to see if Vinny Curry and Derek Barnett can have some success against him.

As for the Eagles…

Sounds like Hicks will be back. And Lane Johnson will be at RT. That’s huge with Ryan Kerrigan coming after Carson Wentz.

Ronald Darby has begun practicing, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll play. The Eagles are getting pretty good corner play right now so there is no need to rush him back. Let Darby get completely healthy for the stretch run.

It will be good to get Wendell Smallwood back in the lineup. Corey Clement and Kenjon Barner aren’t at his level. Smallwood is a key 3rd down receiver and has the most athleticism of all the RBs.

One of the benefits to playing a Thursday night game was all the extra time off to let the players get healthy.

That might be out of our hands if somebody offers him a multi-year deal of large value. With Darby, Jones, Mills, and Douglas in the mix there might not be a prudent $ expenditure on Darby. But if he wants to come back on the same one year…………..

I personally don’t see him getting a big long term deal but he’ll get a raise to 2-3 million a year so it may not be in the cards. He’s gonna be 31 next September.

That’s good in and of itself, but they should’ve said “6 to 8” instead of “4 to 6!”

  19. 19 ColorSgt said at 7:16 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

Yeah, when he got injured it looked worse than 4 to 6.

  20. 20 Guy Media said at 7:17 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

Exactly, which is why I’m not giving him the Kendricks “day to day” abuse that resulted in a 4 week lay down. I honestly thought Darby’s foot was going to have to be amputated, but I would have liked an authentic time window.

  21. 21 ColorSgt said at 7:20 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

Hopefully he is 100% next week then.

  22. 22 Guy Media said at 7:22 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

Honestly, every game without him should still be a win until after the bye week. I just want him 100% as we embarrass the F out of Dallas as Zeke suspended and we further expose Dak as an overrated and over-lucky turd.

“Williams’ backup is out for this game so Trent basically has to play. It will be interesting to see if Vinny Curry and Derek Barnett can have some success against him.”

Don’t worry, Williams will still hold more than any other LT in football and get called for it almost never.

Wins by Flyers, Penn State, and Astros – good.
    Loss by Sixers – bad.

    Today’s needed results
Tampa over Bills – F U idiot McDermott
Bears over Panthers – maybe Scam will start honoring his press conference obligations again
Titans over Browns – Titans are probably my suicide pool pick
Saints over Packers – Need the Saints to keep winning in-conference as protection against a Panther playoff run
Colts over Jags – need the Tom Coughlin fluffing to stop immeidately
Cards over Rams – we need the Rams beat up and diminished by the time we play them later in the year
Jets over Dolphins – Todd Bowles is the coach of the year so far
Vikings over Ravens – Unless Joe Webb is playing, I kind of enjoy watching the Vikings win
    Niners over Cowboys – DUH
Seattle over Giants – Double Duh, hopefully somebody scary on Seattle ends Eli’s undeserved games played streak.
Bengals over Steelers – nothing, except NY sports misery, is as good as Western PA misery.
Broncos over Chargers – Chargers being pitiful is funny, especially with a piece of trash like Bosa on the team. I’m still beaming that Lane shut that turd down.
Patriots over Falcons – I know it isn’t popular here, but I like watching the Patriots win and I don’t like Matt Ryan because he was too good for West Chester Area School District schools; so F him.

  25. 25 Rob Jarratt said at 8:22 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

I really like your mix of objectivity intertwined with love and hate, MM. It makes for great reading and frivolity. Probably not a good way to win your pool, but what the heck.

Just a couple of things: why not have the Giants do a beatdown of future oppornent, Seattle? Of are we just conceding that one? I hate the Hawks and their haughty fandom. Also, I know that McDermott did not acquit himself well as the heir to JJ, but I’m willing to let that one go.

Finally, I must admit that I don’t have a feel for the outcome on Monday night. Logic tells me that the Iggs should win by a TD or less. However, ingrained Philly insecurity borne by 70 years of enduring sports tragedies (the worst being the monumental collapse of the ‘64 Phillies) has me on edge.

  26. 26 Guy Media said at 9:08 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

I’m only taking one game in my pool; so that remains the Titans. The other games are just rooting outcomes.

I actually like Seattle because they shut down the brutally ugly Kaep/Harbaugh alliance in San Fran, scoring a win for real quarterbacking. And I’d prefer to see all NY teams rot in perpetual abject misery.

There is no letting go of McDermott until he apologizes for his horrible work here, obnoxious bragging about “12th in yards” with a 30 year bad red zone D being glossed over, and subjects himself to a public series of recriminations for his poor coaching and uppity attitude.

And I hear you on the “edge” stuff for Monday night, but objectively we’re a better team than Washington, so I’d be more worried about a choke letdown loss next week vs. San Fran.

  27. 27 Rob Jarratt said at 9:39 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

All good points, MM. My pool is all games and suicide. Oakland let me down two Sundays ago on the suicide, but I’m holding my own on the other. With a $60 investment in a pool that is about 30 of us, over the years, through my occasional winning, I have been able to buy iPhones, iPads and a few other goodies.

I was shooting for 5th in the east this year, deep playoff run next year, title the year after.

I have zero respect for any teams in the East other than Cleveland, Boston, Toronto, and Washington.

  32. 32 Bert's Bells said at 10:43 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

I don’t really follow NBA, but it seems to me that tanking for half a decade is a terrible “process” if the goal is to win. I have no respect for an organization that doesn’t try to win games.

  33. 33 Guy Media said at 10:48 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

That should have been over at this point and they’re transitioning to making an aggressive run at winning a title with the assets the acquired. I’m just annoyed that they choked two leads so far this year and that Okafor is a fuckup of a human being and a wasted draft pick.

I’ll take the 1 but respectfully disagree about them being trash. They were a mediocre, lower-level team. A number of my buddies liked stinky’s plan. They argued it was the only way to turn the franchise around and get out of the tepid rut. I’ll see a couple of those guys for the MNF game, I’ll ask them the same question.

  39. 39 D3FB said at 5:56 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

How many championships would the Sixers had won if they hadn’t tanked?
    Zero

This team had nothing except Jrue of any value after the Bynum trade.

Even before that the concept of hey maybe every couple years we can get our teeth kicked in during the first round! and you know once a decade maybe we can make the EC Semis!!!! was boring as hell.

Ways to turn a franchise around; Get Star player
    1. FA’s werent coming here
    2. Trade for one, why would one want to be traded here, and we didn’t have enough to make a trade anyways
    3. Statisitically your odds of finding a star increase as you pick higher.

  40. 40 Masked Man said at 9:48 AM on October 23rd, 2017:

No; his shoulder is “off” and they won’t bite the bullet on admitting it. Sounds like they’re using the Phillies team “medical” “professionals” for managing Fultz. I’d rather see him shut down, given a few games in the D league to prep back up, and get back here ready to roll in a month or two.

  59. 59 RC5000 said at 11:51 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

I’m gonna say probably not if he doesn’t have a lot of injury problems.

He has a hard time lifting his arm. That has to get straightened out and then give him time to develop normally.. I watched 8-9 games of his at Washington. He’s got a lot of talent. I personally don’t think he lost it and basically won’t shoot without this shoulder issue.

  65. 65 Gary Barnes said at 11:52 AM on October 22nd, 2017:

I disagree on the injury front. Eagles have been pretty fortunate so far this year. Yes, we lost Sproles but we have 2 other RB to cover and our run game has been fine. We have missed Cox for 2 games, but again have the depth to cover.

That is why quality depth is so important. Most importantly, we’ve lost no one off our OL and Wentz is still standing.

Hicks being dinged up is normal fare; that is more of a concern since our depth is minimal and we knew it was going to happen i.e. he is injury prone.

Darby is coming back which is fortunate. Injuries can make a big difference, but, if the organization did its personnel/roster job correctly, it should be weatherable.

Your week 7 rooting guide. You’re welcome.

With Eagles fans waiting 1,117 years between games, here’s your guide for how to get emotionally charged up for Sunday without the Birds no matter what game the convoluted network rules deliver. The 2017 Rooting Rule Book has been pasted below for your reference.

Arizona (3-3) v. LA Ram (4-2). Arizona is the pick here. As difficult as it is, I may need to accept that the Rams are relevant. Besides, we have the tie-breaker on the Geriatric Cards. Oh, and who the hell put two West Coast teams in London?

Tampa Bay (2-3) v. Buffalo (3-2). Buffalo. Jameis who? And with Buffalo being the team most likely to dethrone the Patriots*, gotta back Opie Cunningham.

Baltimore (3-3) v. Minnesota (4-2). Baltimore. Hopeless? Probably. Baltimore looks awful, but the Vikes may be the North favorites now without Rodgers running around.

NY Jets (3-3) v. Miami (3-2). NY Jets. They deserve better after getting robbed last week. And the sooner Jay Cutler is out of the league the better off we all are.

Jacksonville (3-3) v. Indianapolis (2-4). Jacksonville. Again let the Colts lose everything and then hire the better coach and GM available before the NY Giants can.

New Orleans (3-2) v. Green Bay (4-2). New Orleans. Game of the week candidate here. Must bury Green Bay before ARod comes back.

Carolina (4-2) v. Chicago (2-4). Chicago. I hope the Panthers suffered for the last 15 days. I blame them for Morelli’s crew. Therefore an embarrassing loss to da Bears is justified.

Tennessee (3-3) v. Cleveland (0-6). Cleveland. As always, let the Browns claim the #1 pick, fleece the Giants for 8 high draft picks to get the next Joey Harrington.

Seattle (3-2) v. NY Giants (1-5). NYGiaaaarrrggghhhh. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. But its better to see Seattle go down so the Eagles have a cushion. If Seattle comes on late in the season like they usually do, I don’t want to play out West in January. Make them fly East. Fuck the Giants, though.

Atlanta (3-2) v. New England* (4-2). RRRRGGggggghhhhh. New England. Atlanta is a threat like the Seahawks. Fuck the Patri*ts, though.

Dallas (2-3) v. San Francisco (0-6). San Fran. This would make NY Giants and Patriots wins so much easier to take. Let’s go 9ers!!!

Denver (3-2) v. LAChargers (2-4). LAChargers. Let the Broncos go into a skid of self-doubt win a locker room implosion leading up to their game with us.

Cincinnati (2-3) v. Pittsburgh (4-2). Cincinnati. Can’t we just sell Southwestern PA to West Virginia for a barrel of boysenberry moonshine?

The 2017 Rule Book. If you can’t remember all that above, the general guidelines are as follows in order of importance.

    1) GO EAGLES!

    1a) Dallas sucks.

    2) Division rivals must not win, except in rare instances. E.g. facing each other with one of them threatening to make the playoffs.

    3) Down with the rest of the NFC.

    4) The Patriots cheat; AND

    5) Steelers fans do not deserve anything good to happen to them ever again.

SF is not as awful as their record indicates. They’ve been competitive in all but their first loss. In their last five 5 games. they lost by a margin of only 2-3 points.

Fox can only show one game this week, and presumably they prefer to show another game in most of their markets (Dallas game at 4pm in the Philly market for example), and CBS decided that was preferable to their early game in a lot of places, so Fox let CBS take it. The other CBS early game options were Jacksonville/Indianapolis, Baltimore/Minnesota, and Tennessee/Cleveland, which are not massively compelling matchups.

It’s a way to get that game shown where otherwise Fox would have mostly buried it, and it was a more interesting game (read: gets more ratings / advertising revenue) than the choices the other network previously had.

Yo Christian Mccaffrey is butt. What a waste of a draft pick. He’s like Darren Sproles is Sproles had no shiftiness at all.

  82. 82 kajomo said at 3:33 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

All the people who wanted us to draft him made me actually hate McCaffrey. If a players best trait is simply his versatility he is not worth a 1st round pick. That means he’s not truly elite at anything.

  83. 83 A_T_G said at 4:12 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

I was one of those people. I am not sure Barnett has had a greater impact so far, but I admit I was wrong about McCaffrey.

  84. 84 kajomo said at 4:31 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

I was very vocal about not wanting Barnett to be our pick. He seems like he will be a solid starter, but nothing close to elite. I wanted more impact from a top 15 pick. That said I’d prefer Barnett over McCaffery any day. Both guys were drafted on college production vs pro potential. Neither is likely to ever be an impact player at this level.

  87. 87 kajomo said at 5:11 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

The difference is that Agholor always had the physical abilities to succeed. It was mental for him. McCaffery is fine on the mental side of things. He lacks functional strength as a RB and isn’t dynamic or explosive enough as a 3rd down back

  88. 88 ChoTime said at 6:17 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

I don’t buy the mental stuff. People can play or they can’t. McCaffery will probably end up a slot WR or some kind of gadget back, but I wouldn’t rule out a successful career.

  89. 89 kajomo said at 6:45 PM on October 22nd, 2017:

Everyone but you apparently could see his confidence was destroyed and it impacted his play. I honestly don’t get how anyone could argue against that.

McCaffery was the #8 overall pick at a position where impact players are found throughout the draft. He needs to be special. He is not. He will never justify the pick spent on him and it was pretty obvious before he was even drafted.

Games are not won by solid players. They are won be elite players. It’s all about collecting as many of those as possible. Carolina wasted a top 10 pick on Danny Woodhead
