Another Coaching Update
Posted: January 29th, 2021 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 2 Comments »Finally. The world will finally get to meet Nick Sirianni on Friday, when the Eagles hold a noon press conference to introduce their new coach.
If you want to get a feel for him, Dave Spadaro did an interview for the team’s website.
Sirianni is a much better interview than Doug Pederson ever was. We’ll have to wait and see if he can actually do a better job of coaching.
There wasn’t anything too groundbreaking. He did talk about how much he believes in competition. It will be real interesting to see what Carson Wentz has to say about that.
Sirianni is a small-school guy. He’s a grinder. To him, always compete. Never be afraid of a challenge. That attitude might bring out the best in Wentz or it might ruffle his feathers. We’ll have to wait and see. There were issues with Pederson, but Wentz and Sirianni should have a clean slate.

The Eagles offered Michael Clay the special teams coordinator job, according to league sources.
Clay, 29, has been the assistant special teams coordinator for the 49ers since 2016. He worked for the Eagles in 2014 and 2015.

When/if this gets finalized, here are the ages of the Eagles coordinator:
OC Shane Steichen: 35
DC Jonathan Gannon: 37
STC Michael Clay: 29The last time the Eagles had an OC/DC/STC in his 30s was when they hired Dave Fipp in 2013. https://t.co/OBEgrXfBsF

That is a young group. And I’m totally fine with that. Young coaches are having more success than ever. Why not embrace that and roll the dice on young guys?

Tony Pauline reported that the Eagles will be moving on from Zach Ertz. He was told the team will try to trade Ertz. That won’t be easy due to his age, salary and the fact teams know the Eagles are likely to eventually cut him if they can’t trade him.
Ertz had a bad year in 2020, but he’s been one of the best TEs in the league prior to that. It is hard to evaluate him. If he returns to form, Ertz is a valuable weapon. Or is age catching up to him and his best days are behind him?
The Eagles cap issues mean they likely can’t afford him no matter what.

I’m starting to get more impressed with several CBs. There are also good safeties.
And the TEs are looking good.
These are all need areas for the Eagles.
Going through a 4-win season was miserable. Having the #6 pick is fun. But let’s hope we’re not this high again for a while.
