That’s More Like It

Monday wasn’t any fun for Eagles fans. Tuesday is a very different story. The team was able to make multiple moves, keeping a star corner and adding a RB who has tremendous potential.

This is the move that shocked all of us.

Bradberry made it clear all season that he wanted one more good contract. The fear was that he would get an offer that was out of the Eagles price range. Former agent Joel Corry recently predicted Bradberry could get:

  • Contract package: $43.5 million/3 years ($14.5 million per year)
  • Overall guarantees: $30 million
  • Fully guaranteed at signing: $30 million

The actual numbers came in under that. If Bradberry can hit his incentives, he’ll get $44M and be plenty happy. I think he found things challenging (along with most FAs) because teams didn’t have a ton of cap room and had to shop smarter. Most Marches we see teams throwing money around without a care in the world. This year teams are showing a lot more restraint.

Bradberry’s return is a big boost to the defense. They have already lost multiple starters. He gives them a veteran presence on the backend, which will be needed with so many new faces in the lineup.

Bradberry says he had better offers, but the fit in Philly was good and the money was good enough. We don’t know if that’s 100 percent true, but he’s back at a reasonable price and seems happy about it. Good piece from Josh.

What does this mean for Darius Slay?

You initially think it means Slay is gone. Would the Eagles pay Bradberry and Slay?

That came after the news of Bradberry’s return. I’ll take that as a good sign, that Slay just might be coming back himself. The market for veteran CBs isn’t great so maybe he’ll sign an extension and finish out his career as an Eagle.

The Eagles brought in an outsider to give the offense a boost.

I love this move. Low risk, high reward. Penny signed cheap because he’s had injury issues. He only has 11 starts in his career. Last year he played in 5 games before breaking his leg and missing the rest of the season.

The reward could be substantial if he can stay healthy. Penny averages 5.7 yards per carry for his career (337-1918-13). He has good size at 220 pounds, but still runs 4.46. He’s bigger and faster than Miles Sanders.

If Penny can stay healthy, he can thrive behind the Eagles OL. Penny is a downhill runner who breaks tackles. He has good vision and footwork. He is patient behind the LOS, but then has good burst when he finds a hole. The biggest complaint we had with Sanders was him bouncing too many runs outside. Penny will go wide if he can’t find room up the middle, but his first instinct seems to be getting up the field and not running E-W.

If Penny gets hurt, the Eagles will need an insurance policy. They have Kenny Gainwell already in place.

And…

That gives them a pair of veteran RBs to go with Penny. The Eagles still have Trey Sermon, who Nick Sirianni seems to genuinely like. You can’t count on him, but he’s at least in the mix. There is a very deep class of RBs in the draft. The Eagles could very well spend a pick on a RB. The team could also look to add another veteran this summer if they have concerns or find the right guy still available and at the right price.

Penny-Gainwell-Scott is a solid trio for now. Maybe I’m too excited by Penny’s upside. I think he could be a combination of Sanders and Jordan Howard. Penny will have great blocking for the first time. That should help him a lot. He’ll also have the threat of Jalen Hurts and that will affect defenses.

One thing that could help Penny is if the Eagles go to more of a RB by committee approach.

2022

Sanders 259 carries
Hurts 165 carries
Scott 54 carries
Gainwell 53 carries

2021

Hurts 139 carries
Sanders 137 carries
Scott 97 carries
Howard 86 carries
Gainwell 68 carries

I’m sure the Eagles would like to get Gainwell more touches. I know Scott wants more. Penny has never had more than 119 carries in a season so I’m sure he’s fine with being part of RBBC.

The Eagles need some cheap answers. Penny gives them one. Really good signing.

For those depraved souls who want it.

The Eagles need depth on the DL. This could be a player of interest.

He’s 6-4, 291 and a good interior pass rusher. Jefferson has been a backup 2 of the past 3 seasons so he can be effective as a starter or role player. He will turn 30 in a couple of weeks, but he’s coming off a career high in sacks (5.5) and TFLs (6).

And he wouldn’t count against the comp pick formula.
