Sitting Pretty

Winning the Super Bowl is a great achievement, but it can make the following season challenging. Coaches leave for promotions. Players leave for big contracts. Some players stick around, but ask for more money. Some players and coaches spend too much time celebrating and aren’t ready for the grind of the new season. Injuries are an X-factor for all 32 teams.

Things have gone surprisingly well for the Eagles so far. They did lose Kellen Moore and Doug Nussmeier to New Orleans. Kevin Patullo was promoted to offensive coordinator and the team brought in some interesting offensive assistants so that the staff has a chance to build on last year instead of needing to make a lot of changes.

Milton Williams and Josh Sweat were the major free agent losses. The Eagles seem to have Williams loss covered. Jordan Davis is in the best shape of his career and Vic Fangio has high expectations for him this season. Moro Ojomo looks ready to have a breakout season. Rookie Ty Robinson is a disruptive interior player who looks like a good fit. As for Sweat, Jalyx Hunt seems to be the key replacement for him. Hunt looked good in the recent OTAs and could take a big step forward this year.

Darius “Don’t call me Darius” Slay is gone. Kelee Ringo is the player the Eagles want to replace Slay. This is Ringo’s third season and it seems like he’s starting to understand the mental side of pro football. He’s always had the size, speed and raw ability needed to play. If Ringo stumbles, Adoree Jackson is there to take over.

The Eagles need to fill Mekhi Becton’s spot at RG. Tyler Steen took the first team reps in the OTAs. Lane Johnson is impressed with Steen so far this offseason.

“He’s just a physically gifted dude, man,” Johnson said. “He’s a lot stronger than what he was when he first arrived. So, I think his playing strength is starting to show, and I know he’s ready for camp to start. And yeah, man, he’s just been putting in work, and I think you’ve seen traits of him where he can be a dominating player.”

Steen’s first opportunity to really show his growth will be in Training Camp when the pads go on. The Eagles have Matt Pryor behind Steen and also Kenyon Green in the mix.

We know there will be ups and downs with the replacements, but the Eagles have good plans at each spot.

As far as money goes, the Eagles are in good shape. They gave Saquon Barkley a raise and then made Zack Baun a highly paid LB. They found a solution to the Dallas Goedert situation. There aren’t any ongoing contract disputes. Only one draft pick is unsigned. Nick Sirianni got a contract extension.

Will there be a Super Bowl hangover? We won’t know for sure until the season gets going. It sure doesn’t feel like this team is resting on its laurels.

We know Sirianni is a driven, ultra-competitive person. He’s going to do everything possible to keep his team focused and motivated. The Eagles lost some older guys (BG, Sweat, Slay, CJGJ, Maddox, etc.). They replaced them with a lot of younger players, hoping those players would be hungry. Instead of going after older pass rushers like DeMarcus Lawrence, Joey Bosa, or Dante Fowler, the Eagles signed Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche. The Eagles didn’t want ring-chasers. They wanted young players who would have something to prove.

I think the Eagles have taken a smart approach. They aren’t looking to repeat. This will be the 2025 Eagles pursuing a title of their own. They brought back a lot of players so the team will have enough talent to win it all. They made enough changes that this team will feel different and can take the right approach to the upcoming season.

In terms of injuries, the Eagles are in good shape. Nakobe Dean has the toughest situation, but he’s making progress and will be available at some point in the season. Cam Jurgens is coming back from a back injury. He should be good for camp. Ben VanSumeren is working his way back from a knee injury. That’s not bad at all for a team that played 21 games last season.

As you look around the rest of the league, a lot of teams have issues to deal with. Cincy has contract issues with a couple of key players. The Steelers are trying to get acquainted with their new QB. Dallas has a new coach, a contract issue and is coming off another underwhelming offseason. Detroit had to replace both coordinators. The Vikings are relying on a first-year QB, which is a tall task for a team with big hopes. Plenty of teams have injury issues.

The Packers tried to get the tush push banned, but the Eagles even managed to stop that. This has been a good offseason for the Eagles and the team is in a good spot heading into the down time before Training Camp.
