Eagles Make A Change At QB

Posted August 24th, 2025 | No Comments »

With Jalen Hurts coming off a Super Bowl MVP season it may seem like a strange time for the Eagles to make a change at QB, but that’s exactly what they did on Sunday morning.

I’m sure many of you will say the title of the post and the opening sentence are both highly misleading. I thought I would try some NY Post ideas and see how they work.

Tanner McKee has a finger injury and Kyle McCord clearly isn’t ready to play so the Eagles traded for Sam Howell. He gives them a backup with 18 career starts. He has a solid arm and is a good athlete. In a 2023 game against the Eagles, Howell threw for 290 yards and ran for 40 more. Washington lost the game 34-31 in OT. He put up even bigger numbers in the second meeting between the teams.

Howell was a backup in Seattle last year. He only threw 14 passes. He was traded to the Vikings and apparently struggled up there this summer. The Vikings traded him and then immediately signed Carson Wentz. Yikes.

The Eagles don’t really care that the Vikings didn’t like Howell. The Eagles needed a short term backup who fit their system and would be available cheap. Howell met that criteria. McKee won’t be out for long, but you need a veteran backup even if for just part of a game. The Eagles schedule is brutal to open the season. You’d hate to lose a game because you were afraid to spend resources to add the right veteran QB for depth.

McCord had some good moments this summer, but he is too raw to play right now. He will almost certainly be cut. I think the Eagles will try to bring him back on the practice squad so they can try to develop him for the future.

Howell just needs to keep McKee’s seat warm for a few weeks. Hopefully Howell won’t be playing and can just enjoy hanging on the sidelines.

Could there be more trades coming?

Jimmy Bama covered that in a piece this morning. So far he’s 0 for 1.

Will he ever be right about anything?
