Finally

The Eagles were the best team in the 2022 regular season. Both the Eagles and Lions were good in 2023. The Lions were the best team in the 2024 regular season. Sunday night’s meeting between the Eagles and Lions will be their first game against each other since the 2022 opener. This is a game everyone has been waiting for. Lions vs Eagles.

Detroit is 6-3, while Philly is 7-2. But the Lions have three wins by at least 22 points. They feel like the more dominant team. The flip side is that they don’t have great wins. Tampa is the best team they’ve beaten. Can Detroit beat a top team? Can the Eagles beat a dynamic offense?

This game will be a huge test for both teams. Winning doesn’t guarantee anything and losing doesn’t mean anything definitive. Still, it will be good to see how this plays out. How do these teams stack up against each other? The Eagles have been to two Super Bowls in the past three seasons, winning last year. Detroit has never been to a SB. They want what the Eagles have.

The Eagles will be facing the #2 scoring team in the league. That puts pressure on the Philly offense and defense. I’m most curious to see how the defense does. They have played really well the last two games. The pass rush came alive with the addition of Jaelan Phillips and the return of Nolan Smith and BG.

The pass coverage has been better as well. Adoree Jackson is playing his best football of the season. It also feels like rookie Drew Mukuba is starting to understand his role. It also helps to have a great corner like Quinyon Mitchell.

As the nearest coverage defender this season, Quinyon Mitchell has allowed a completion percentage of 45.5% and a success rate of 36.4%.

The Eagles allow the third lowest completion percentage in the league. They allow the fourth lowest QB rating. That’s pretty impressive when you think about the secondary and the QBs they have had to go against. Mahomes, Stafford, Mayfield, Prescott, Love.

The Lions offense will be the biggest challenge of the season. They are Top 10 in passing and rushing. They have a good OL. They have multiple playmakers. And they have a veteran QB who knows the offense inside out. This is one of those games where you are very glad Vic Fangio is running the Eagles defense. He will have good ideas on the best way to slow this offense down.

The Lions have beaten up on bad defenses. They haven’t been as dynamic when going against good units.

They are still good, but not as dominant. The Eagles should be able to slow them down. I don’t know about stopping them.

There is a lot of intrigue with the Eagles offense because they are coming off a 10-point game and also the AJ Brown drama. Green Bay did a real number on the Eagles. The previous two games were a different story. Philly scored 38 against the Giants and 28 against the Vikings. Can they get back to those kind of numbers? The Eagles will have to put up points to win this game. One TD will not be enough to beat the Lions.

The good news is that the Lions have a very banged up secondary. This would be a good week to focus on the passing game. Turn AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith loose and let Jalen Hurts air it out. This won’t be a game where you play “not to lose”. The Eagles will have to be aggressive and take some chances.

I think we’re all excited to finally see this matchup. Let’s hope the teams give us a good show.
