Unacceptable

The Eagles blew a 21-point lead on Sunday and lost to the Cowboys. This is unacceptable. The offense has struggled throughout the season, despite having a lot of talented pieces. This is unacceptable.

What the hell does that even mean?

Unacceptable.

If the Eagles had a better offense, but a worse record…would that be acceptable? Detroit is #2 in scoring, but would not make the playoffs if the season ended today. Their defense is 11th in points allowed. That’s a good team, but at only 7-4 they could miss the postseason. I’m sure their fans think that is unacceptable.

People saw the Eagles returning a lot of talent and said this group should be back in the Super Bowl. Anything less is unacceptable. On what planet is that true? Do you know how hard it is to make the Super Bowl. Detroit has never been. Dallas hasn’t been in 30 years. The Giants haven’t been since 2011. Washington hasn’t been since 1991.

I think some people saw what the Patriots and Chiefs did and assumed that was normal. It absolutely was not. The Patriots had the greatest QB of all time and arguably the greatest coach of all time. The Chiefs have an all-time QB and an all-time coach. Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes are on a level that Jalen Hurts just isn’t. Maybe that will change over time, but not now. Bill Belichick and Andy Reid are on a different level than Nick Sirianni and that is not changing.

This Eagles team makes a lot of sense on paper. But as we know, games aren’t played on paper. I’m as frustrated as anyone by the Eagles offense. It is torturous to watch this much talent play this poorly.

The Eagles offense currently ranks 25th in success rate. They are producing a positive play on offense at the same rate as the Jets.

This situation goes beyond Kevin Patullo. He’s the face of it and I get the criticism, but he’s not holding back some juggernaut. The OL is a mess this season. It shocks me to see how poorly they run block. Some of that is on the players, some is on Jeff Stoutland. The OL isn’t healthy and you can see that in the struggles of Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens. I don’t know what is wrong with Jordan Mailata. He’s healthy, but is way too sloppy this year.

The lack of creativity with the passing game is absolutely on Patullo. He has not gotten the most out of his players, or anything close to it. You don’t have to be Ben Johnson or Sean McVay, but running hitch after hitch after hitch is maddening. There must be some creativity. You must be able to scheme for players to get open in specific situations. Patullo has been fantastic in the red zone so you know he can get creative. I don’t understand why some of that can’t come out before you get to the 20-yard line.

Jalen Hurts is the QB and like all QBs he gets too much credit when things are good and too much blame when things are bad. Hurts has done some really good things this year, but could still be better.

There is another X-factor. Some of the players just seem “off”. There are times when AJ Brown doesn’t seem locked in. Dallas Goedert used to be one of the better blocking TEs in the league. There are times this year when he’s been bad. Saquon Barkley has been sloppy. His blocking has been inconsistent. His running hasn’t been the same. The OL is killing him with poor blocking, but it does feel sometimes like Barkley is hunting for big plays instead of just getting what he can. You can’t force the big plays. You have to let them come to you.

Is there a Super Bowl hangover? Are the players just worn down from a long, tough, physical 2024 season? I wish I knew the answer.

It feels like the coaches are waiting for things to get back to where they should be. I understand that idea, but it sure doesn’t feel like that light switch is getting flicked on anytime soon. The good news is that there is enough talent on this roster for them to still be able to win a lot of games and beat good teams. The coaches need to figure out how to get more out of this offense. They don’t need it to be great, but it must get better.

And the players need to be smarter and more consistent. Dumb penalties really hurt the offense on Sunday. This group can’t overcome those mistakes right now. Clean up the issues and the offense would have scored more points yesterday. You don’t have to cure cancer. Just get a little better. We can talk about more serious changes in the offseason. The goal now is how to get the most out of this group.

Sirianni said he’s not making any changes. This is a short week so it wouldn’t make any sense to do that. Depending on how things go against the Bears, we’ll see if he changes his mind. There would be more time before the next game.

For now, sit back, eat some turkey and see if this is the week the hitch route works like magic.

The Eagles got some bad news on Monday.

Ugh. Not a shock. Mukuba was in real pain on the field. This is even more complicated because Reed Blankenship hurt his thigh and left the game. I haven’t seen an update on him yet. You wouldn’t want to be without both safeties. Blankenship’s situation didn’t look overly serious, but this is a short week and that complicates things.

The Eagles never want life to be boring for their fans.

Eagles Blow It In Big D

Everything is gonna be alright. But don’t take my word for it. I got into the car to go grab a burger after the Eagles lost 24-21 to Dallas. I was in a foul mood and I had a sore hand from punching a keyboard. I turned on the radio and the first thing I heard was Bob Marley say…

If you can’t trust Bob, who can you trust?

Certainly not the Eagles. They got out to a 21-0 lead in Dallas and life was good. The Eagles weren’t playing great, but were able to take advantage of Cowboys mistakes. Then the Eagles started making mistakes of their own. Dallas took advantage and did enough to win the game on a last second FG.

The first instinct for many is to figure out who to blame. Is this more on Nick Sirianni or Kevin Patullo? Offense or defense? This was a team collapse, not just one person or side of the ball. The Eagles were called for 14 penalties. They had 2 turnovers. That’s a group effort. The offense had some nice gains wiped out by dumb mistakes. The defense gave up 7 explosive plays, with three of them going for more than 43 yards. STs made some critical errors, including a missed FG.

That truly is a group effort.

Losing the game sucks, but the bigger concern for me is how banged up the team is. Adoree Jackson was in concussion protocol. Reed Blankenship left with a thigh injury and didn’t return. Drew Mukuba got hurt late. I couldn’t tell if that was knee or ankle. That’s not ideal on a short week. The Eagles play the Bears on Friday.

The biggest concern within the Dallas game is that the Eagles lost the line of scrimmage. The Cowboys out-rushed the Eagles 125-63. They got regular pressure on Jalen Hurts. Dak more often than not had time to throw. He was able to burn the Eagles with multiple deep balls. The Eagles pass rush which was so good against Detroit didn’t show up. Jaelan Phillips had 1 QB hit. He didn’t make any tackles or plays. The Eagles OL was sloppy all game long. They got no push in the run game. Saquon Barkley finished 10-22.

Barkley needed to do more himself. He fumbled after a catch and run. He slipped on a play when he had a chance for a first down. There were a couple of runs when he seemed to choose the wrong gap/hole. His blocking could have been better on some pass plays. He wasn’t the only star to make a mistake. Zack Baun dropped an INT that came right to him. Dallas drove down and scored a TD after that. Stars have to make plays.

This is a brutal loss and there isn’t any disputing that. You go up 21-0 and then fail to score after that…yikes. Not good. But anyone who says this is going to kill the Eagles needs to step back. Last year the Eagles were up 21-7 on WAS early. They were up 30-28 late. The Eagles picked off a pass and went up 33-28 with 1:58 left. WAS won that game in the final seconds. The Eagles won the next week with Kenny Pickett as the starting QB.

The WAS loss was truly crushing. You just knew the Eagles were going to win. This game was more like a slow burn. Once the Eagles stalled you started to think they were going to lose. It wasn’t shocking at all.

There is more drama this season and that is always an X-factor. But this team has played a tough schedule and beaten a lot of good teams. They should have the mental and emotional toughness to overcome a bad game. They lost consecutive games in October and came back to win the next four.

Nick Sirianni and his staff have a lot of issues to sort through in the next 24 hours. They need to fix mistakes and figure out the injury situation. Chicago is going to be a challenging opponent on Friday. Hopefully that challenge will bring out the best in the Eagles.
