Free Agency Preview
Posted: March 11th, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 371 Comments »Happy Free Agency Day everyone. This is kinda like Christmas in March. Let’s just hope the Eagles give us some good gifts to open. Remember that this is just the opening of free agency. The Eagles jumped out of the gate last year with a flurry of moves. That may or may not be the case this year. Each year is different, based on the market and who the targets are. Do not panic if the Eagles are quiet. I don’t anticipate them being quiet, but it is a possibility.
MY PLAN
* Sign CB Darelle Revis
* Sign FS Malcolm Jenkins
* Sign OLB O’Brien Schofield
* I would like to add a veteran DL to the mix since I think the Eagles should let Clifton Geathers go. I’m not dead set on one player. I’d like someone with pass rush ability. Corey Wootton from the Bears interests me because of his size (6-7, 270). He’s had 10 sacks over the last couple of years. I’m not sure if other teams will see him as a starter or backup. Adam Carriker could be of interest if you think he can actually stay healthy. Good fit for 3-4 DE, but injuries are a huge concern.
* I would like to add a RS. Ted Ginn is my preference among veteran players.
* I would like the Eagles to deal Brandon Graham for either a draft pick or some help at OLB. Yesterday I mentioned swapping him for LB/DE Shea McClellin of the Bears, a player the Eagles liked a lot in 2012. McClellin could be a good backup to Connor Barwin at the least. He’s got that kind of size and has some potential with covering TEs.
I realize that signing Revis won’t be cheap or easy. I think he’s the kind of player you roll the dice on in free agency. He could be be a true impact player.
Jenkins is the S I want since I think he has the best combination of fit and value for the Eagles. If the team can’t work anything out with Revis, then I’m fine with them pursuing Jairus Byrd. I just wouldn’t pay him $9M per year.
There is no OLB that I’m in love with at this point. Schofield is an athletic pass rusher with upside. You’d be rolling the dice on him.
There is no player that I’m strongly against. My focus is on getting at least one Safety and trying to find some LB help.
* * * * *
Ranking some targets (combination of value and fit)
Safety
1. Malcolm Jenkins
2. Jairus Byrd
3. Donte Whitner
4. Mike Mitchell
5. Antoine Bethea
OLB
I am not comfortable with this group since I think the Eagles need an explosive rusher that can beat LTs and most of these players are complementary rushers. But here goes…
1. Mike Neal
2. O’Brien Schofield
3. Shaun Phillips
4. Matt Shaughnessy
5. Marcus Benard
* * * * *
Brandon Lee Gowton of BGN has a report up on the Eagles being interested in DB Corey Graham. Graham played CB for the Ravens for the past 2 years and did a solid job. He’s not a big time playmaker or shutdown corner, but is a good role player that can start when needed. He does want to start. The Eagles could offer him the potential to win a job, but Graham isn’t talented enough to sign and count on as a starting CB. He’d have to outplay Williams or Fletcher. Graham is also a very good STer.
He played for New Hampshire when Chip Kelly was there so that could help both sides want to get something done.

Sheil Kapadia wrote about Mike Mitchell, an Eagles target that not all fans like.
18 – The number of missed tackles last year for Panthers safety Mike Mitchell, according toPro Football Focus. That was tied for most among safeties.
As we’ve mentioned in this space, the Eagles are one of the teams that has looked into signing Mitchell. But it seems like many of you would be against the move based solely on the missed tackles number. And that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Regular Birds 24/7 readers know I like incorporating stats when they make sense. But statistical analysis is extremely difficult with safeties, who oftentimes aren’t even in the TV shot. Take Mitchell, for example. He played 920 total snaps. Let’s assume for a second that his missed tackles came on 18 different plays. That is still a limited sample that accounts for less than 2 percent of his overall snaps. In other words, roughly 98 percent of the time, he was on the field for a play where he didn’t miss a tackle. How did he perform in those instances?
Missed tackles are subjective. The number can vary depending on who’s doing the charting, and a difference of two missed tackles can make a world of difference when using terms like tackling efficiency. Also, most safeties are going to have high numbers (14 of them missed at least 14 tackles, per PFF, including Earl Thomas). And three, tackling is something a player can improve on. We saw that last year with Nate Allen.
Tackling is obviously an important part of playing defense for any NFL player. But it is still only a part of the big picture. Mitchell (6 feet, 210) has good size and can run, plus he’s only 26-years-old. Granted, he played on a team with a talented front seven last year, but Mitchell did a good job on the back end.
Given the market, I still think he’s a decent mid-tier option for the Eagles.
I watched more tape of Mitchell. He missed a tackle in each of the 2 games I checked out. Both times he was over-aggressive. On one, he came downhill very quickly and wanted to really hit Frank Gore. Mitchell got to the spot too quickly and was upright rather than in good tackling position. Gore gave him a simple move and Mitchell could only lunge for him. That kind of stuff can be worked on in practice.
Mitchell struggled in Oakland mainly due to injuries. He just couldn’t stay healthy early in his career. He showed enough in 2012 to get a deal with the Panthers and then had a breakout season.
Mitchell would be a risky signing. He could thrive or he could flop. The Eagles must feel that he could succeed in this system with as much interest as they are reportedly showing.

We have gotten to the point in free agency rumor mills where TE Eagles are signing everyone, but here is an interesting one:
https://twitter.com/jasonlacanfora/status/443349605229813761
Caplan said we were talking to bills about trading for Byrd last year
I think part of the safety rumours are because we have such a large hole at safety, it makes sense to link us to them, but it’s likely also because we have been kicking the tyres on a lot of them
Yeah every safety since dawk left has been linked to the Eagles.
Haven’t you heard? All Jason La Canfora reports have been officially ex-communicated from this blog by Pope Tommy.
I do enjoy the thought of Howie feeding La Confora false rumors just to troll him. Seeing EVERYONE else refute this rumor only an hour or so later made me laugh.
Tommy,
Do you have any concerns about Revis buying into the Chip Kelly way of life? He is amazing on the field, but I have gotten the impression before that he was a bit of a malcontent with the Jets and Tampa. Maybe this isn’t true or is he so good that you don’t worry about that stuff?
Keep in mind that it was “with the jets and tampa.” Not the gold standard for organizational stability or good vibes.
good point.
Think the Bears would like a swap of Graham for McClellin too. Both players are in mid-20’s, were 1st rounders and have 2 years left on original contracts for similar $. Sounds like a “win-win”.
i have to wait till 10 pm for it to start, i might welcome my good old friend insomnia if she decides to pay me a visit
tenterhooks !!
It’s 11 pm for me. Which country are you coming from?
First watching UEFA Champions League, then I’ll watch what the Eagles will do. 🙂
france
Why are you so “in love” with a Revis signing, Tommy?
I wouldn’t say that I’m against his signing, he’s a great player. But especially if we talk about value – I’d think that Williams and Fletcher with Byrd/Ward as Safety would be better than Revis and Williams or Fletcher with a mid tier Safety.
We have two solid (but far from great) outside corners on our roster, I think those two don’t push the team into a deep playoff run, but they don’t harm you. Right now, we basically have zero safeties on our roster you could say the same thing about.
I don’t have anything against Revis, but I think a great Safety would have more value for this team (with Williams and Fletcher already here) than a great Corner.
But then again, I haven’t watched film on Byrd or Ward, you did. If they are very good but not great it could make sense.
One point I would make despite that argument is: Revis will get at least 11 million, with Shields getting 9 and Verner probably 10. Byrd is looking (doesn’t mean he’ll get it) for 9 million.
If we talk about value, 2 millions (maybe even more) are worth something.
I think perhaps you’re overvaluing our current corners a bit. While upgrading to a great safety would be a bigger upgrade you have to wonder if Byrd is worth it. Revis is absolutely a top tier corner. Is Byrd? He’s good, great even. Is he top 5? I’m not sure.
It also isn’t necesarilly a one or the other though. Getting Revis doesn’t mean we couldn’t still upgrade corner.
I’ll just say like Tommy said Revis is the kind of player you do roll the dice on.
Fair point. I would say that some people are undervaluing them. When Williams and Fletcher were signed, it said that both are good press corners. You can’t press with Chung behind them.
But you are right: if they aren’t better then what we saw last year, we should replace them. I just think that they would be better with a great Safety behind them, because they could play more press.
I don’t disagree. I like Williams edge and Fletcher played good. They both had pretty good moments too, but to me their just kind of meh. I never expect them to make a play I guess. No rule against getting a good safety or corner in the draft. Or both. Hard to say until after the draft what it will look like. One way or the other both those positions are going to get new blood this off-season.
No you are right.,.we ain’t spending on starting CBs,,Cary and Brad are who we go to war with until their replacements are drafted and developed….lol don’t know what’s more absurd, Revis or Mitchell lol
…
Dan Snyder hasn’t been able to spend in two years, who has the discaplin to not over pay, and walk away from the bidding war first, Howie or Snyder? Lol Mitchell is a skin, and Snyder will have to overpay
Question: why would Anyone think we would sign Obrien Schofield when we could have claimed him off waivers like 3 times last year when we only had 1 OLB on our roster?
…
Eagles will sign:
..
Cory Graham
..
Ward
..
Jenkins
,,,
Alex Carrington
…
Cnris Cooks
..
Bruce Cambell….
…
Jammarri Lattimore…
…
If we can’t get Carrington the other DL we consider is Al Woods or Terrence Cody(non GUARENTEED roster spot)
First question: no OLB via FA (I have to admit, I googled Carrington, Cooks, Campell and Lattimore)? Do you think Howie will leave the bpa approach for that position in the draft? Or do you think we’ll go with the same 4 players like last season?
Second question: why did you get banned on Twitter already? I enjoyed you tweets, to be honest with you, I tried to follow you, but the system said that you have been banned. Is it because of the Kyle Long incident? (;))
I think cuz I set off a cyber riot in Chicago…me an Kyle were just having a friendly back and fourth, it’s not like I was being disrespectful or talking shit, but every bears fan went crazy about me talking about him leaving Chicago and coming here, like 300 people in Chicago retweet our interactions, and I got suspended for a ewe days, which is crazy because it wasn’t even an argument…
…
Carrington really efficient, interior pass rusher to rotate with Curry and Cox on 3rd down, but last year, check out his 2012 numbers. if we can’t get him, we will look to steelers Al Woods to backup Logan..
…
Chips cool is a 2010 CB draft bust of Vikings (34th pick I believe), rough start to his career, but screw marsh! I’d rather see what our coaches can do with this 6’2 212lb corner who ran a 4.4
..I been posting how we would sign Corey Graham since November…ITS GOING DOWN!!
…
Bruce Cambell from raiders is a cheap super athlete at OG
..
Lattimore is just a cheap ST standout, compete for roster spot at backup ILB…
…
I want OLB, there just really aren’t any…we have OLBs that do some things well, but we don’t have that edge rusher..everyone like Neal! but he practically does everything well except be that edge rusher, so I don’t see why we would pay millions for another OLB who isn’t the edge rusher solution for us..
…
Schofield hit waivers like 3 times last year, and every time is as screaming for us to sign him! we didn’t, so why would I think we would outbid teams for him now? Makes no sense…
….
eagles will make that splash at safety…only question is do we just add one, or will we get Ward and Jenkins for like 11mil?
Correction on carrington(won’t let me edit): really efficient interior pass rusher, his best football is still in front of him, he was HURT last year so check out his 2012 stats
..
I think we want OLB, but there aren’t any pass rushers, no point in spending for more OLBs who aren’t that 10 sack guy…probably possible we can still pull of a cuop and sign Mike Johnson! but he will be so damn expensive so I wouldn’t hold my breathe….doubt we are done trying to pry Dion away from Miami….if not, they will have to adress OLB In the first two rounds of draft
Isn’t there concerns about Bruce Cambell’s chainsaw hand?
Edit: Chris cooks 2010 draft bust, not Chip cool lol
I had to think for a second, but got there. “Chips cool is a 2010 CB draft bust” is a funny sentence, nonetheless. 😉
You saw my convo with Long…it was just a playful back and fourth…it’s not Ike I was disrespecting him or badgering him and he wasn’t responding me…why the hell did I get suspended? All I can think of is because every Chicago fan went crazy at the thought of losing long….normally when I get banned, I know nd I’m deciding to do something that I’m expecting to get banned for…I have no idea why this happened…
..
Worst thing I said was, “everyone knows you wear your midnight green pajamas with the Footies attached when Lance Briggs isn’t around :)”….at first he was laughing when I was telling him we all know he will eventually be an eagle…but then when all the Chicago fans started freaking out. He hit me with the “#BEARDOWN go home you are drunk”…nothing bad happened, nothing disrespectful was said…no idea why I got suspended.
..
ATleast Chung confirmed that he was playing thru a badly hurt shoulder all year. As I suspected during the season…I KNLW he had a bad year. But we have to respect that
Great that Cambell is cheap and athletic, too bad he can’t play…
Where do you see he was waivered 3 times? I can only see he was claimed once by the Hawks in July
Where does Graham fit on this team ATM? I like him, and hear the interest from newy types. Just don’t think he fits unless they are cutting Williams or benching Fletcher.
One of Bill Polian’s top free agency rules is that you don’t pay a free agent more than your A and B+ players on your team.
Now I’m asking you where Byrd would rank in this regard? Would he be one of our A or B+ players and how much do these earn?!
Don’t forget Polian’s top rule for building a great team: luck into a hall of fame quarterback with the top pick in the draft.
I’m playing a Madden season right now. Luck has a career ending injury midway through the first season. God do the Colts suck without him.
In Madden, of course, but I don’t think that’d be unrealistic. 😉
… Or with the 88th OVR pick…! 😉
I would like to see us getting an RB. Brown was a disappointment last year, and while Polk played more, and pretty well, down the stretch, both of them should be pushed and have some serious competition. It’s possible a rookie could do that, but I would also like to see a veteran added.
Upgrading the back-up spot, whether by improved play by Polk/Brown, or a new player would also make sharing Shady’s workload a lot easier
Jerick McKinnon. He’s headed to the Birds on draft day. Hope so at least
Would you trade for Revis? If so, what would you trade? 4th rounder? Best way to get Revis is to deal for him, if we want him
For 16 millions, you don’t even trade a 7th round pick. I can’t speak for Tommy, but if one team makes a trade, I for one sure hope it’s not the Eagles.
And I can’t think of a bidding war via trade. 7th round is the best the Buccs can do (if there would be an 8th round in the draft, it would be an 8th rounder), every teams knows that there aren’t a lot of bidders.
The only reason to trade for Revis would be if you don’t want to let him hit the market. But if you’re okay with paying him 16 millions, you can offer 14 or 15 millions in FA and you’ll probably get him. On your own terms.
He will have a good season, then act like a jackass and hold out for 50milliom…..no thanks
Lets hope its the Cowgirls who trade a 5th rounder. They’ve always got plenty of cap space…..
2 things, first it sucks to be in China to have coverage of my beloved eagles (worst timezone with US). Second and most important, I don’t care about the reports because the eagles always do deals under the table, no one saw asomugha coming nor fletcher,…. They are the best to give you false informations. Just sayin’ from all the safeties, only one wasn’t link with the birds and it will be a future midnight green: Jenkins.
So true, just thinking back to last year we heard nothing about most of the players we signed. The only one I remember some buzz around was Casey, and I think that started from Caplan.
On the other hand there were rumours about interest in Sean Smith and Eric Winston amongst other.
I totally believe that when reports say eagles are interested into revis or byrd they are just trolling the other teams because teams fear their cap space and that enable them to have a red carpet to sign the ones they were really coveting and also putting the other teams in bad cap situation. trololololo
I like that list. I agree that Revis is the kind of guy to spend big for and I’d definitely prefer him to Byrd and Ward. In the safety department, I kinda have a thing for Clemons – he doesn’t stand out much for good or for bad and I think that’s the kind of guy we should look for.
In terms of DL, what do people think of Antonio Smith? He’s a name I’ve seen kicked about a bit and he seems like a solid pass rusher with 3-4 experience.
Aging 30yr old corners who will play well and ask for more money next year are who we should be signing? I prefer a 27yr old safety who can give support to all the corners, and grow with this defense….
….
Don’t understand how people could be happy giving Revis 10-13mil, when we can have Ward AND Jenkins for like 11mil
…
Hell at Revis money I’d rather have a young Verner who can ATleast grow with this team…
…
NNamdi scared us away from signing all big name FA, yet they will spend on 30yr old Revis! who will be doing sit-ups in his driveway and holding out after a good year? I don’t get it
I think there is still the mystique of Revis’ talent that makes him so wanted. I personally dnt want him either but it really isn’t my decision.
Revis can press and play our scheme, Verner is more of an off corner, Cover 2 guy.
I love defense, at the end of the day, any defensive upgrade would make me happy, but I just simply don’t view this as realistic…if it happens, there are worst fates then adding a quality corner, I just don’t believe it’s true
Revis is 28, genius.
Actually he turns 29 before the start of the season “genius” …but thanks for the worthless contribution and senseless cunty attitude to the debate….now run along,
Why is it you again make an argument with invalid information and then take offense when corrected? Jason was/is correct. You were wr…wro…wron…go on. Say it. Yes, he was mildly insulting, but you were over the edge with your response.
Revis will be 29 DURING the a DAMN SEASON!!! Who cares if he is 28 during OTAs? You have to he an anal cunt to bitch at someone rounding up from 29 to 30….but you can play captain save a hoe if you want, this is like my favorite day of the year…you wanna act like Maggie! there are tons of idiots for you to play with. I want to talk about free agents today…thanks, run along….l.you think I didn’t know Revis would be 29 and not 30? Give me a break
So you’re gonna argue that him saying 28 instead of almost 29 is less correct than you saying he’ll be 30 instead of almost 29? How many h’s and a’s in hahahahahahahahaha?
It was mostly your remark afterward to which I take offense. Try civility here or limit your remarks to 24/7.
This place would be so much better if GEAGLE limited *all* his remarks to 24/7. Alas.
I’ve been wishing for that for a long time.
One of the MANY reasons I love this site is I can read the comments section with my 11 & 13 year old sons without much risk of sewer mouths like GEAGLE ruining it for me/them. It’s to the point I have to skip right over his filth. Sad that he can’t clean it up or just stick to all the other threads that he graffiti’s his filth all over.
“I have no idea why I was banned on twitter….”
“…anal cunt…”
Grow up, dude.
Mate, would you like to slow down with use of the ‘c’ word on here?! We’re not in East London, are we?
WOW. Stay classy bro. SMH
I know everyone has different opinions on who we should target and who we shouldn’t but Howie and co. have done a pretty good job lately so I think we can just sit back and feel confident our FO will GET IT DONE!!!! GO EAGLES
That’s the best part of it (coming draft day, also). I maybe think: damn, we need a Safety/OLB, why do we pick/sign a DE, O-Line, RB, ILB, TE… but I’ll trust Howie and especially Chip to do the right thing, even if it doesn’t make any sense to me. It’s priceless to have such a mentality. Now I know how Patriots, Seahawks or 49ers fans must be thinking. 😉
I’m surprised that Tommy would dip his foot in the Revis pool. That is definitely risky, BUT if you can take away half of the field, that is huge. I hear that his current contract can all be converted to signing bonus money. You can get him and adjust that $16M one time hit to spread it out over a couple years. Not bad.
Not on the current deal. Let em be cut and sure go for it.
In Chip we trust — unless Nate Allen is the starting safety when the season starts. I’m off the band wagon if that happens — again.
Nate was fine last season. He wasn’t great but he wasn’t bad. There’s a TON of players who would have been much worse starters. I don’t think starting him would be the end of the world if we had competent play at the other safety spot which is something Chung couldn’t provide.
“He wasn’t completely terrible and he wasn’t that awful”. Fixed that for ya. YW.
bazinga !!!!!! we haven’t switched to daylight thing yet, so it’s only 5 hours time difference yay ! it will be 9 pm. which means my evening is basically ruined for i’ll be checking twitter every two minutes. balancing the flimsy difference between ‘very good’ and ‘great’, whilst keeping an eye on the bank account, yup yup, i’m very happy i’m not howie right now. tricky.
have fun, thomas !
Dream Team 2! Dream Team 2!
Great plan as always, Tommy. Fully on board. Wonder if the acquisition of Revis and/or drafting of CB early in draft could presage a shift of Cary Williams to safety?
Wipe your mouth, and wear knee pads next time, mindless sheep lol
That about sums up your contributions to this blog.
Hahaha
Is this post written in English?
Serious questions:
1. How old are you?
2. Do you maintain consistent employment?
It’s Will Ferrell’s character from “wedding crashers”. Hence the unexpected mood swings. “MOM! PAY MY INTERNET! I never know what she’s doing in there.”
I was awaken at 6:00am by a text that read simply “Happy Free Agency day!!!!!!”.
I took a deep breath and knew that life was good.
who else stayed up past midnight expecting players to be signed at 12:01 on the dot only to find out that FA doesn’t start until like noon today or something?
just me? crap.
I liked it more that way, then I could wake up at 6 am my time and follow FA signings all day, now I have to sleep after a few hours of FA and miss all the fun
That was the best, being able to follow all the rumours and stuff through the whole day. The year we signed Samuel was a lot of fun
just you
Revis may be the best corner in the league, but I was under the impression that his strength is in man coverage. We play zone…
We play both. We mostly played zone because man requires CBs who can do it and safeties you can help them. We had neither
We signed big physical press corners last year, yet our safeties were so bad that our corners couldn’t play to their strengths…don’t see why we would add Revis before getting safety taken care of
I wouldn’t worry about locker room moral if they sign Revis to a mega contract. There are certain players that have a prestige all of their own. In the same way nobody on the Broncos cared that Peyton Manning was making more money than god, the only person on the team that would be upset with Revis being here would be the CB he’s replacing.
And Maybe Desean.
If we sign Revis, I would expect him to play well, although not $16M well. And sooner or later, he’ll blow up like TO did. Prima Dona. Bad fit.
We won’t..Sheep
Calling people sheep because they agree with the blog’s author is a totally sustainable practice.
Baaaaaaa humbug
You made me curious.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humbug
Your comment was not baaaad…
Now that was funny.
We won’t but would you be upset if we did?
Jesus christ, just go away already.
This might cheer you up a bit
A former company I worked for once had an “all hands” meeting to threaten us for not having good morale
I love that FA plan. Makes a ton of sense. If they did that I would think they came out of FA a much better team for 2014 and moving into the future.
[Crickets]
Expecting Dallas to release Demarcus Ware
That would be wise of them, but since they can now juuust barely afford to keep him due to the bigger cap, my money is on him staying. Long live Jerry!
His future checking account balance is also in the balance.
They did it! They let him go! Hilarious.
That remembers me of something…
Does McNabb now work for the Cowboys press corps?
We are Taters tried and true…

Well worth an ‘up’ vote.
I think you forgot the most important move Tommy: Resign Donnie Jones.
Which begs the question, at what point do we start panicking if he isn’t resigned? I think 5 minutes is a bit too hasty so my vote is 15 minutes into the new league year, does that sounds about right?
I hope we tampered the shit out of Donnie Jones.
I do worry that this could end up being the Evan Matthis deal again. He had the same restriction on resigning with the eagles and even went to Baltimore if I remember correctly to consider an offer there. We manages to keep him, but I just hope we don’t risk losing Donnie Football
My sources tell me we’re offering Donnie Jones a 10 year/40 Mil. contract. Hopefully he doesn’t balk at the lowball offer.
http://www.csnphilly.com/football-philadelphia-eagles/eagles-are-25m-under-cap-or-are-they
Matt Tobin will make almost as much as Manny Machado this year, who got a platinum glove in 2013. Nutso.
I’m baseball stupid. I had to look up Manny Machado. lol
Blueberry beer is still for the ****. Luv ya, Tommy!
I would love to sign Julian Edelman he would be a great replacement for avant in the slot and he returns punts also I saw a tweet earlier about the eagles being interested in willy young maybe that is the veteran d linemen tommy was talking about
I’m very hesitant about New England WRs. I always feel that they get overrated because of Brady and the New England offense and ultimately get overpaid because of that. Obviously there are exceptions and a few good WRs have been on that offense, but I would be worried about signing any Patriot WR and expecting them to produce at the same level here.
Yeah I agree Im hoping we make more additions to the defense then offense anyway
Defense is definitely the bigger need, but I would actually be very happy to add to the offense. Seems to me that one of the important things about being a dominant team with Superbowl aspirations is to have a feature of your team simply be dominant, whether that is offense, defense, passing, pass rush, etc. We have a very good offense, but if we can push it to a flat out dominant offense, I do think that makes a difference.
I agree, though it may become more difficult to upgrade guys who are already good players.
Not interested in Edelman for this offense. Although I could easily see the Pats picking up Avant to fill the role.
Think Edelman has been signed.
Nope he’s still talking to the pats they offered him a three year deal but he’s testing the market.. Probably wants to much money
Umm Revis has to be cut first and take a reasonable. Funny people okay paying fifteen mil a year to Revis What about all the excuses w signing Byrd or ward and lockerroom moral and chemistry and fit and overpaying for hired guns and resigning foles and cox and Boykin And Kendricks and having cap room. Revis held out twice and forced a trade for god sake and we aren’t worried about his attitude and fit and what he may do after one year like he did w jets after he resigned. Seems very hypocritical to me. Byrd will cost about 5-7 mil cheaper and cover a position of need and we know him better. Also allows your corners to play press effectively w help overtop. Hilarious.
character issues aside (i didn’t really follow any of it with Revis…)
the difference is that you would pay top dollar for a ‘special’ player in Revis, albeit one who may be nearing the end of his career, maybe not. (if we do sign him, i hope the FO does their homework checking him out!)
with Byrd, Tommy has already explained that he does not feel that he is a ‘special’ player (see this from a few weeks ago: http://igglesblitz.com/2014/03/byrd-hunting-2/)
so perhaps that accounts for the difference in pay we are talking about?
that said, i’m still hoping we get Byrd (AND Jenkins… I can dream, right?)
this gives us a versatile guy and a centerfield ballhawk type guy.
i think Chip & Billy value turnovers very much so that increases Byrd’s value for us. We would still want a guy like Jenkins so that we do not have to rely on Wolff who may or may not improve upon last year and it would truly give us the flexibility to go BPA in the draft
I understand the argument I just don’t think Revis is a good fit or leader or great for our lockerroom and I don’t think he is worth twice as much as a Tj ward … Shit for Revis money we could get Byrd and Tj ward and have best set of safeties in the league vs Seattle. Tying sixteen mil in one pkayer better be a franchise qb, best pass rusher in the NFL or an elite player at 25 not going on 29. Personnally if rather have verner at 25 than Revis at 29 and the baggage he could bring. And Byrd fits better, he is a top 4 safety out of 64 safeties, we know him and he creates turnovers. Aside from hof player comparison Byrd is better than great majority of safeties in nfl and most good safeties will be signed to long term deals after this yr
I appreciate that your argument has become more nuanced and less calling everyone who disagrees stupid as FA approached.
Ironically, the arguments you make against Revis in favor of Verneer work almost perfectly as arguments against Byrd in favor of Jenkins.
How many were pining for a “special” player. A “difference maker”, etc. Revis is that. Of course everything is about money, and wouldn’t you hold out on the Jets? I followed his recovery a bit. No one ever worked so hard to get back, except maybe Adrian Peterson.
Ya know, when you’re paying Cary Williams $6M plus this year, $9M for Byrd really doesn’t sound all that unreasonable. With that being said, I’d be shocked if Byrd actually gets that much.
4,750,000 for Williams this year. Cap number 6,416,666 includes previously paid prorated bonus
I stand by my argument. LOL
Playing 920 total snaps missing 18 tackles doesnt mean he didnt miss a tackle 98% of the time.. It could mean he wasnt in a play to make a tackle.. Snaps mean nothing when it comes to tackle count n efficiency.. It should be tackling attempts to tackling made n missed
But then you run into the guys who don’t even attempt to make a tackle if it is not easy to make, and those guys might be the most “efficient” because they don’t even try.
I hear ya.. But thats just getting beat.. If you are in position to attempt n make a tackle thats what should count
NFL.com has Mitchell making 66 tackles and PFF has him missing 18, for a combines 84 tackle attempts, which means that Mike Mitchell misses roughly 21 % of his tackles.
Thanks Patrick! There you go roughly 21% Mitchell missed tackles.. Thats a stat you should be looking at
Obviously its a stat with a lot of bias. Obviously PFF might be wrong and some teams(bengals one of them) are maybe a little generous when assigning tackles to players(Mitchell might have had more tackles lowering his miss percentage), stats isn’t everything and many more, but still. If you miss 1 out of 5 you have a problem.
Would this be a missed tackle?
http://imgur.com/nNblV
omg you have no idea how much i was hoping that was just that. that just made my day.
Yeah you would call that a miss coz it was an attempt.. You have to be black n white about it.. We do film work after our games n coaches will point out your missed tackle n point out why you missed or if you could took a better angle
At that point it’s all pretty subjective. You’re depending on people’s opinions as to what tackle was reasonably attemptable. Really, there’s no substitute for careful play by play review.
Not opinions.. If you go in for a tackle n miss thats a missed tackle.. If you just stand n watch then youre most probably gonna be playing from the bench next week
How about from the other side of it. You have a guy who takes a chance at making a near-impossible tackle because he’s the type of guy who never gives up on a play. He doesn’t succeed at making the tackle. wouldn’t he be credited with a missed tackle there?
He’s released…
yrp
Whitner, Bethea, Delmas, Stevie Brown, all off the market. Am I missing anyone?
Eagles resign Donnie Jones – 3 year deal.
http://guyism.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/applause-gif.gif
and Chung is no longer an Eagle
No more friendly helmet-to-helmet hits.
Let the speculation continue… if they released Chung they must already have his replacement in-pocket, right?
Could be that they would rather go with ten guys on D than put Chung back there again.
Epic.
Orange Traffic Cone waiting to get paid
I hear he rooms with Brute.
That’s what I’m thinking. We are down to Keelan Johnson and Earl Wolff. Methinks they may need to add two.
I would assume they have 1, maybe even 2.
That is the only explanation that makes sense for the timing.
http://youtu.be/2WNrx2jq184?t=28s
i guess this move happened because of the Jenkins signing, but i’m still a little surprised that it happened already.
i would think they wouldn’t want to cut him until they had TWO safeties ready to start.
i think this says a) they are happy with Wolff and expect him to start at one position next year or b) they have another signing ready to announce
Frank Schwab: OLB O’Brien Schofield to Giants: Two years, $8 million. Quick take: Schofield has always been interesting because of his potential, and the Giants are hoping he pays off. Schofield was pretty quiet with the Seahawks last year so he has to feel good about getting this deal.
Scheffter just said on the air Eagles signed Malcolm Jenkins. 3 years $16.25M
3-year, $16.25M deal
Damn, you beat me.
nice. call it just over 5M per year. not bad
Anwar Richardson@AnwarRichardsonRT @AdamSchefter: Former Saints S Malcom Jenkins to Philly on a 3-year, $16.25M deal, per source.
Eric Edholm@Eric_EdholmJairus Byrd can’t like what he sees from the Michael Jenkins $
I dont get that tweet, Byrd is a much better safety.
Agreed. It sounds to me like the expectation was that Jenkins would get more. That makes me happy.
His market value is being driven down by the contracts the other safeties are getting.
It may be that, as other S go off the market, there are fewer teams inquiring about Byrd. Thus the market goes down. Or it could be that one of the teams without a S gets desperate.
Sorry, wrong tweet
sounds about right
Good to see reporters are sourcing their simple arithmetic:
Aaron Wilson@RavensInsider Retweeted by Frank SchwabEugene Monroe contract five years, $37.5 million. Averages $7.5 million per year, according to sources
Ward to Broncos, it looks like
Frank Schwab: S T.J. Ward to Broncos: $5.5 million per year. Quick take: Good signing for a Broncos defense that needs to improve a bit. They still have to figure out their middle linebacker position, but Ward is a great chess piece for coordinator Jack Del Rio to scheme with.
At that price, we could have signed both him and Jenkins.
That price tells us that they really weren’t interested in him. Can Jason La Canfora be any less reliable?
The Broncos used the tag line “So you know weed is legal here….”
Probably one of the best perks of playing in Colorado.
Well, they’re still drug-tested by the league…
Yep coup by broncos and quite the misfire by Howie. Ward is an all pro and Jenkins is average.
We don’t know Ward wanted to play in Philly. The Eagles might have known Ward was headed towards Denver, so they went with their next option in Jenkins.
Rational thinking, people!
At 6.5 mil a year and 17 mil guaranteed, fairly certain woulda came to the eagles. We didn’t even look at him according to every report I have seen. Kid isn’t leaving that much money on the table. We aren’t the browns. And ward knows chip and billy. Amazing deal for broncos. Average deal for birds
Malcolm Jenkins only turned 26 in December.
26 and a former first round pick by the Saints who let him walk. Only thing I like about the deal is that the Eagles are not tied to Jenkins for the long term, in real terms this is probably a 2 year deal.
Heard Jaws on Mike Mis show say how much he dislikes Jenkins. I think the Eagles will still address safety in the draft.
Saints are in cap hell they didn’t have much choice.
Somethings wrong in the state of Denmark, the Saints found the ca$h and cap room to sign Byrd. Jenkins is just not a play making safety. IMO he’s definitely an upgrade over Chung, and debatable upgrade over Allen, although there’s a possibility the Eagles resign Allen.
We had 31 forced turnovers last year, the third most in the league. This “playmaking safety” that will suddenly greatly improve the defense is a bit of hogwash. Philly fetishizes safety play because of 20, but the organization was smart to sign Jenkins who is a versatile solid safety, who they feel is the best scheme fit and isn’t getting the crazy money Byrd got.
I agree with most of your points. But the Eagles have had playmaking safeties before Dawk, like Wes Hopkins and Andre Waters. And I watched a SB a month ago where a safety drafted in the 6th round dominated one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. I think Jenkins is an improvement over Chung, but whether this was a smart move and how it is graded will have to wait until January 2015.
Rashad Jennings@RashadJennings Flying to the Big Apple tonight! Looking forward to signing the dotted lines with @Giants
Oh thank god we signed Jenkins. Captain Hindsights from birds 24/7 can shut up about Byrd.
For same money as tj ward. Wow what an overpay. Coulda had a much better player for same money
Ward probably took a pay cut to get a shot at a ring and he could smoke all the weed he wants there without getting thrown in jail.
If guaranteed money is close Jenkins deal still looks like an overpay w a talent like Tj ward getting same. And Super Bowl at 27 I doubt it. Birds will have just as many shots over next 5 yrs Well just looks like broncos got the greatest deal ever. Jenkins money is reasonable. Dunno how we wouldn’t take a look at ward and hear what the offer was for unless we waiting to snag Byrd or verner on the back end.
You know so much about players and their worth I am surprised no one in the nfl has hired you in their front office..oh well probaby next year
I was definitely surprised that Blaine Gabbert managed to be at all tradeable…
I would kind of hope that we get a nice safety in the draft, though. Said it before, Jenkins does have Chung! moments. Shouldn’t be too bad.
Eric Edholm@Eric_Edholm
Wait, the 49ers sent TWO picks for Gabbert?
All Saints fans are saying that Malcolm Jenkins is trash and one of the worst starting safeties in the NFL. :/
like I said…though we’ve seen worse safety play here, though. He *is* an upgrade, just not a really happy one.
Look on the bright side. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’m not going to hold my breath on this signing….
Jenkins is fine in the right role. He is an upgrade over Allen and Chung
he’s a worse tackler than allen and cant cover. how is that an upgrade? i wish we would have just ponied up for someone better.
Tj ward got same money as Jenkins. Makes no sense. We shit the bed
Except he didn’t. Ward got 5.5 million, or about 70%, more guaranteed.
That’s peanuts … And to the eagles is really peanuts. Would have meant nothing to our cap situation today or tomorrow. Broncos got an amazing deal for a very good talented top 12 player. Eagles got a okay deal for an average player
If your argument is that the eagles should have spent more for Ward, fine. If your argument is — as it seemed to be above — that the eagles got a lesser player for the same price as Ward, well, no they didn’t.
So you saying you would rather have Jenkins at that price over Tj ward at his deal? I really don’t see how it’s even close. Ward is way more than a box safety. He was very good in coverage and is more athletic than Jenkins
He is average and a disappointment in saints fans eyes. Can’t tackle but versatile I guess …. May make us better on third down but if he was that great I don’t think he would’ve got such a short deal
Hopefully Howie makes another move
Question: with Jenkins signing for what appears as a team friendly 3 yr deal, what happens with Nate Allen? Do the Eagles bring him back?
I imagine they will unless they can get a good deal on someone better. Maybe Mitchell.
I can’t see them signing Mitchell now, I think he would look to make a little more than Jenkins given his stats with the panthers. I think Allen is in play I don’t see him getting a deal better than Jenkins.
i think they will still look to bring in another safety. Allen or someone else.
The Giants aren’t being shy.
Frank Schwab: OG Geoff Schwartz to Giants: Terms unknown. Quick take: Schwartz had a fine season in Kansas City, and can also play right tackle if the Giants need him there. One has to wonder about the Chiefs, who saw three of their starting offensive linemen sign elsewhere already today.
The way I look at it:
Nate Allen BC (Before Chip) was a below-average, below-replacement level player.
Nate Allen AC (After Chip) was probably replacement level. Maybe slightly lower, but definitely a major improvement over Allen BC.
If Malcolm Jenkins AC improves as much over his BC self as Nate Allen did, we’ll have an above average starting safety getting paid reasonable money. He has the body and athleticism to do it.
Point being, upgrade is an upgrade. Can’t have pro bowlers at every position.
Allen was better because he wasn’t in the wide 9 anymore. That scheme was hell for safeties
True, but he also improved every aspect of his tackling, angles, form, etc.
Wow we signed mid level average non probowler non all pro Malcolm Jenkins for the same money broncos gave tj ward who is a probowler and all pro. Wow just astonished. Better be Byrd or verner signing left or Howie got worked or broncos got the greatest deal ever
Verner could make this defense even better than Byrd.
Need to sign him for alot more than Byrd lmao
Naw. I still think Verner is going to get 9-10mil a year and about 25mil guaranteed. It’s not that much higher than what Byrd wants.
Verner is not suited for this defense; he’s a cover corner, not press.
We heard you the first time, get this GEAGLE crap out of here. We don’t even know the guaranteed money yet.
Huh your happy we spent same money on an average guy as we coulda spent on a all pro. Yep. Makes sense
You are making too simplistic of a comparison though. Ward overall is probably a better player, but the question is who is the better player in THIS scheme. Ward isn’t so good that you sign him and redesign the scheme around him, and Malcolm Jenkin’s versatility seems to be a much better fit for our scheme.
I know Tommy wanted this but I just can’t be excited about it. He’s nothing more than a very marginal upgrade in my view.
but it’s a value signing…smh…
He’s still an upgrade. The guy parking cars at the stadium is an upgrade…so we should be semi-happy…
Don’t be so sure – I think that’s C.J. Gaddis…
Yep especially looking at how little ward got I mean wow
I’m not excited about it either. I’m hoping it’s a smokescreen for signing Alterraun Verner.
I think he is significantly more than a marginal upgrade, but that has more to do with our previous starters than it has to do with him.
Byrd on the way to visit the Saints
Who has 2 starting safeties and less than 2 million in cap
Hey, free trip to New Orleans!
Who is starting next to Vacarro?
Rafael Bush. Of course Byrd is an upgrade over him, but how are they going to sign Byrd and their draft picks?
Makes no sense. They have no cap room
How much is he betting and when can I get the keys to his house?
He seems to be a guy whose opinions are held in high regard by other writers, especially on the Eagles.
He used to be a scout and director of pro personnel here, so he has ties to the team
Hah, I was just about to post that. I know he’s getting up there in age, but after all these years of watching him play against the Eagles I can’t help but be intrigued
@NFLonFOX: Colin Kaepernick will make $973K base salary in 2014. Blaine Gabbert is scheduled to make $2.01
Whitner getting 7 million per year from the Browns. Is he an upgrade over Ward?
I wouldn’t have thought so…but he may better fit the new new regime’s system.
He’s older than Ward . . . so that experience should help.
Browns going “Over the Hill Gang” in FA
He’s an upgrade over Ward Cleaver
IMO the fact that ward only got 5.5 on the open market tells me that the NFL was less high on him than the fans were.
Some pro day results

“UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr showed his remarkable combination of size and athleticism Tuesday, clocking in at 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash, according to former head coach Jim Mora.
While 40-yard dash times recorded at Pro Days always should be taken with a grain (or mountain) of perspective, Barr’s time carries some weight as Mora specifically mentioned that Barr’s time was “electronic.”
Other Bruins of note also tested well, including linebacker Jordan Zumwalt (4.61) and wide receiver Shaq Evans (4.32).”
Shaq Evans cut nearly .2 off his 40-time from the Combine?! Hard to believe.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/shaq-evans?id=2543761
I’m viewing the UCLA e-times skeptically until more info comes out.
The same with Barr too.
Maybe the e-timer is working.
The problem could be that the field is mis-marked.
__________
Happened in 1972 at Villanova when All American WR Mike Siani — in pre-combine days — ran a sub-4.5 40 and the Raiders selected him 21st overall. Turns out he the field was mis-marked. He was more a 4.6 guy.
Also happened in 1968 at Miss Valley State — a huge WR named David McDaniels (6’4 210) ran a sub-4.5 40. Cowboys spent a 2nd Rd pick on him. At training camp, he ran a 4.7 40. several times.
So the Cowboys traded him to the Eagles for a 3rd Rd pick in ’69 — who, after timing him, cut him.
Everybody magically runs better at their pro days. For the most part unless somebody ran a truly atrocious time at the combine, and then puts up the number they were actually expected to at their pro day, I just use the combine numbers.
Absolutely.
Advantage is everyone’s running on the same surface.
Seems like UCLA’s track is like that moving walkway at the airport. Definitely speeds things up.
Too bad he couldn’t put up that time vs Mack and clowney at the combine. Think Barr falls to packers or cards at 19. Easy to jump them if we want
11’2″ broad jump is pretty spectacular, isn’t it?
Mitchell going to the Steelers
Byrd is (still) the word.
5 years, 25 million. That seems like a lot for Mitchell.
Polamalu has to be like $7 mill-ish.
About the same per year as we got Jenkins for, and I’m happier with Jenkins than I’d be with Mitchell.
I don’t know where Seattle is on the cap. But if I’m Ware, that’s my first stop — if they’re interested.
It’s like the way older FAs used to go to the Cowboys of 49ers in the early 90s — to try to get a ring before retiring. Wasn’t abt the money
Jenkins, by all reports, is no more a play-maker than Nate Allen. Just substantially less error prone (I guess).
I’d wager that Kelly-Roseman are waiting for the market to sink from under Byrd. Then make a play.
This.
It’s a conspiracy!!
Would the Eagles have interest in Thomas DeCoud, just released?
Reputed to be a tackler worse than pre-2013 Nate Allen
He would fit right in here, then 😀
Donnie Jones Eagles deal is three years $5.5 million, including $1 million guaranteed.
Any word if that makes him the highest paid punter in the history of gravity?
PFF not a big fan of Jenkins
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bie30FHCIAA0V6M.png
The link didn’t include a legend or key, what do the bars represent? But interesting that the chart has Chris Clemons rated higher yet there is no buzz on him at all in FA.
PFF ratings
Thx. I read some Saints blogs a few weeks ago to get fan reaction to Jenkins and one person linked to several PFF post game reviews and Jenkins was ripped for poor play. Some of this was from the season Spags was the DC and the Saints were historically bad. Jaws just today said he didn’t like Jenkins.
Andy can’t be happy about losing 60% of his OL in free agency.
If he liked it then he shoulda put a tag on it.
Ooh ooh ooh.
He can trade for Danny Watkins now
Kelly said he studied Malcolm Jenkins on tape leading up to playoff game. Called him “sharp” and “ultra competitive.”
In the WC game, Jenkins had 3 tackles. (Nate Allen had 6 — a reflection, I guess, on the Saints ability to run up and down the field that day.)
Interesting comment from Kelly.
I wonder what he’d say about Byrd.
Byrd don’t know how to spell ‘playoffs’.
Ha, I’m with you on Kelly’s thoughts on Byrd or I have to think sharp and ultra competitive are not adjectives used for Byrd or Kam Chancellor.
Peppers and Ware cut in the same day. Why couldn’t this have happened five years ago?
Julius Peppers, Jared Allen and DeMarcus Ware combined for 52.5 sacks in 2011. All 3 were in double digits again in ’12. Now, all 3 are FAs.
So which one do we sign first?
#DreamTeam2
So you are saying there is a chance…
Rand Getlin@Rand_GetlinGood chance #Titans CB Alterraun Verner’s deal gets done today. Still no definitive word on where he’ll end up.
You’re getting my hopes up.
T.J. Ward gets 4 years, $23 million; $14 million guaranteed. That’s 5.5M more guaranteed than Jenkins
Larry Holder @LarryHolder 10m
Just chatted with Malcolm Jenkins, “Saints didn’t offer me anything. So I really had no choice but to move.
Larry Holder @LarryHolder 6m
Jenkins said there wasn’t much talk w: Saints through FA process. Philly told him he was “No. 1 on their list.” Eagles called ASAP March 8
Hearing a lot talk about how we could have had ward at the same price. Stop and think for a second folks, if NFL teams thought Ward was a top tier safety talent, he would have gotten paid somewhere. Teams around the league were bidding for his services and he only landed a 5.5 mil contract.
If Ward had gotten 7.5 and we signed Jenkins for 7.5, I think this argument is legit, but the fact that he signed (on the first day of FA no less) to a deal substantially lower than projected means that he probably has a better reputation with fans/media than coaches/FO’s.
Ward got 5.5 million more guaranteed. That’s your difference.
sometimes people just don’t know what they are talking about
They committed more long term to Ward than we did to Jenkins, but the deals seem to be very similar for the first 3 years. Close enough at least for comparisons sake.
nope. Guarantees are the most important part of these deals.
Typically, yes, but neither of these deals have a bunch of funny money at the end. I bet both players could actually get all of this money. If a player gets the unguaranteed money, it doesn’t matter how much was guaranteed.
If both players flop, we were smarter. If the Broncos don’t want that 4th year with Ward, we were smarter. If Jenkins turns into a good player for us, he might end up costing more over the 4 years.
Regardless, I think it is valid to compare two contracts signed for the same position for similar average salaries hours apart.
Yeah, I guess.
The difference is the cost of dumping the player if he turns out to be too, er, Chung-ish.
Oh, you didn’t get the memo yet?
There never was a Chung on this team. Any mention was erroneous. We have always been at war with Eastasia.
At the end of the day, the whole point of my post was that TJ Ward didn’t get nearly as much money as people were predicting, so that tells you that NFL teams valued him less than his reputation would suggest, especially when you consider that the Browns signed an aging Donte Whitner for a larger deal and let their own guy walk.
So people saying OMG we could have had ward for cheap – the fact that he could be had for cheap (or cheaper than expected) should say something, especially with good safety play being so coveted in today’s NFL.
At least Eagles didnt get Mitchell! haha
Boykin blitz? Yea that worked out great last year
Man, you are just a fountain of sunshine and positive comments!!
You don’t like the moves they have made so far, we get it! We don’t need a constant reminder though, so chill out, sit back and keep quiet until the Birds do something you do “like”…..
If the eagles don’t sweep the cowboys every year until 2047 I will be pissed.
Your expectations are way too low. Nick Foles is QB through 3013.
Boy am I glad Miles Austin is out of Dallas, not because he’s done anything noteworthy against us or anything like that, I just really hate his face and stupid smile, every time it has showed up on TV I have wanted to punch him in the face, and I’m normally a very calm and non-violent person
I don’t know. I agree with your description, but to me that makes him the prototypical Cowboy.
There’s a lot of truth in that, but there’s just something extra punchable about his face
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tOakzcUx_A
Punch it! Punch it! Punch it! lol
He cheated on you huh? lol Dallas look like they making the steps in rebuilding..
Eric Edholm@Eric_EdholmOther teams showing most interest in special-teams ace Adam Hayward (before he signed w #Redskins) were Eagles, Cowboys. Early NFC East win.
Stupid Washington team. They aren’t supposed to overpay for guys we actually want…
Was just looking at Sproles numbers. Didn’t realize he’s heading into his 10th season. That makes him like 119 in running back years.
I saw a tweet that the Saints changed their mind and aren’t going to release him now because the level of interest makes them think they can get something in trade.
That’s why I was looking at the numbers, particularly interested in the PR/KR aspect – not so good of late.
Verner is a Buc.
And Byrd a saints
Interested to see how they afford him. Six-year deal, maybe back heavy? Maybe they shed some players?
Maybe they just want to win NOW?!
Gerhart’s jag…
get it? yuk, yuk…
……..I blame you.
Byrd off the market too. To the Saints no less with their 2 mil in cap space. We may need to lock up Nate Allen after all!
Cannot wait to have two non playmakers starting at S again…
GOOD NEWS! You won’t have to wait long after all!
Know what fanbase I’m glad NOT to be a part of?
Oakland. Everyone hates them, no matter how much cash they wave…
Looking like McKenzie might be an idiot. Let 3 of your best players walk and give a tackle who can’t stay healthy $42 million.
Seriously Jenkins FS Allen SS Williams Boyking Fletcher is really more good than bad.
I mean, we’ll see it could definitely be a hell of a lot worse….. we could still have *cringe* Chung.
Basically you have swapped Chung for Jenkins which makes a below average secondary… Well. Below average!
Have faith man, Allen was starting to be kinda good this year, not to mention we will also draft someone, I really think they made the right move
Mate, are you still up?! 🙂
Yeah but it’s the morning here (in China for work), I missed all the fun 🙂
What fun?! Missing the Jenkins and Jones signing is similar to missing the bus at 6am in the morning. 😉
Might run into Chung over there.
Remember how Andy stubbornly refused to bring in good receivers and linebackers. This is what Chip is doing at safety. Why blow all that money on a bum like Malcolm Jenkins who can’t cover or tackle, when you could’ve gotten one of the five best safeties in Jairus Byrd? They damn better sign Darelle Revis to mask the flaws of another terrible group of safeties.
Look at the number saints gave up for Byrd, that’s insane
Safety is a premium position. How many truly good safeties are there any more? Totally worth big bucks. Everyone wants to be a CB now.
That contract is going to be laughable in 3 years.
Why do you think Jenkins is so terrible? Just PFF?
C’mon, Jenkins is not a bum. He’s probably a grade or two above your “replacement level” FS. The deal is nominally for 3 years, but in real terms is 2 yr deal, so the Eagles will likely draft a safety or two to eventually replace Jenkins.
Whats the point in signing a guy you have to replace eventually when you could’ve had the long term guy?
Disappointed that we didn’t have any interest in Verner. FA is pretty much over for me now. There’s either only depth moves or more mid-tier signings like Jenkins.
Hopefully, the draft and the new Godzilla movie won’t be such a let down in 2 months.
it is what howie said it was going to be. eagles totally backed off of fa.
Doesn’t fit our scheme anyway. Fits Lovie perfectly.
I know but still…
6 year $54 million for Byrd. $28 million guaranteed.
So how can they afford this? Sacking some
Where’d they get the money? Mortgage your bleak future after Brees some more Aints.
Next year they are in serious deep shit to sign graham
I honestly think some team will sign him to an offer sheet so they will get 2 1st round picks..
I for one, will be laughing and enjoying their misery.
is that what he got?? source?
Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter Retweeted by Anwar RichardsonSaints are giving former Bills S Jairus Byrd a six-year, $54 million contract, including $28 million guaranteed, per source.
thanks, turn my head for one minute. Veurner is gone too. Should have known better with this team.
Revis seems like a pipe dream. I’d say they are really focusing on pass rush but there’s just old guys out there. Guess we’ll just have to wait for the draft to have fun again.
Unless the Eagles sign Ware, I don’t see pass rush as a focus in the FA period. It seems that they’re making incremental improvements with non-breaking-the-bank free agents
I. Want. Revis.
For. A. Reasonable. Price.
if not I’d gamble on Talib if the Pats don’t resign him.
I don’t know about you guys but I really think that allen will be the last person we sign in FA, maybe a depht move but the next thing that will happen is a mind-blowing trade a la demeco.
DJax and Brandon Graham for Jimmy Graham?
Ixnay on J. Graham, Kelly likes players that can block, and J. Graham is to blocking like Nnamdi was to tackling. Graham was exposed in the loss to the Seahawks and win over the Eagles (he was on field for less than half the O’s snaps).
I can see the Eagles trading Brandon Graham but he’s not likely to get anything above a 5th round pick b/c he’s entering the last year of his rookie deal.
Shit the niners get jonathan martin from the fins, that was the kind of move I was expecting from Howie
Reuniting with his old coach — too simple (though i guess didn’t work for us).
So about that CB depth…
