Free Agency Preview

Posted: March 11th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 371 Comments »

Happy Free Agency Day everyone. This is kinda like Christmas in March. Let’s just hope the Eagles give us some good gifts to open. Remember that this is just the opening of free agency. The Eagles jumped out of the gate last year with a flurry of moves. That may or may not be the case this year. Each year is different, based on the market and who the targets are. Do not panic if the Eagles are quiet. I don’t anticipate them being quiet, but it is a possibility.

MY PLAN

* Sign CB Darelle Revis

* Sign FS Malcolm Jenkins

* Sign OLB O’Brien Schofield

* I would like to add a veteran DL to the mix since I think the Eagles should let Clifton Geathers go. I’m not dead set on one player. I’d like someone with pass rush ability. Corey Wootton from the Bears interests me because of his size (6-7, 270). He’s had 10 sacks over the last couple of years. I’m not sure if other teams will see him as a starter or backup. Adam Carriker could be of interest if you think he can actually stay healthy. Good fit for 3-4 DE, but injuries are a huge concern.

* I would like to add a RS. Ted Ginn is my preference among veteran players.

* I would like the Eagles to deal Brandon Graham for either a draft pick or some help at OLB. Yesterday I mentioned swapping him for LB/DE Shea McClellin of the Bears, a player the Eagles liked a lot in 2012. McClellin could be a good backup to Connor Barwin at the least. He’s got that kind of size and has some potential with covering TEs.

I realize that signing Revis won’t be cheap or easy. I think he’s the kind of player you roll the dice on in free agency. He could be be a true impact player.

Jenkins is the S I want since I think he has the best combination of fit and value for the Eagles. If the team can’t work anything out with Revis, then I’m fine with them pursuing Jairus Byrd. I just wouldn’t pay him $9M per year.

There is no OLB that I’m in love with at this point. Schofield is an athletic pass rusher with upside. You’d be rolling the dice on him.

There is no player that I’m strongly against. My focus is on getting at least one Safety and trying to find some LB help.

* * * * *

Ranking some targets (combination of value and fit)

Safety

1. Malcolm Jenkins
2. Jairus Byrd
3. Donte Whitner
4. Mike Mitchell
5. Antoine Bethea

OLB

I am not comfortable with this group since I think the Eagles need an explosive rusher that can beat LTs and most of these players are complementary rushers. But here goes…

1. Mike Neal
2. O’Brien Schofield
3. Shaun Phillips
4. Matt Shaughnessy
5. Marcus Benard

* * * * *

Brandon Lee Gowton of BGN has a report up on the Eagles being interested in DB Corey Graham. Graham played CB for the Ravens for the past 2 years and did a solid job. He’s not a big time playmaker or shutdown corner, but is a good role player that can start when needed. He does want to start. The Eagles could offer him the potential to win a job, but Graham isn’t talented enough to sign and count on as a starting CB. He’d have to outplay Williams or Fletcher. Graham is also a very good STer.

He played for New Hampshire when Chip Kelly was there so that could help both sides want to get something done.

Sheil Kapadia wrote about Mike Mitchell, an Eagles target that not all fans like.

18 – The number of missed tackles last year for Panthers safety Mike Mitchell, according toPro Football Focus. That was tied for most among safeties.

As we’ve mentioned in this space, the Eagles are one of the teams that has looked into signing Mitchell. But it seems like many of you would be against the move based solely on the missed tackles number. And that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Regular Birds 24/7 readers know I like incorporating stats when they make sense. But statistical analysis is extremely difficult with safeties, who oftentimes aren’t even in the TV shot. Take Mitchell, for example. He played 920 total snaps. Let’s assume for a second that his missed tackles came on 18 different plays. That is still a limited sample that accounts for less than 2 percent of his overall snaps. In other words, roughly 98 percent of the time, he was on the field for a play where he didn’t miss a tackle. How did he perform in those instances?

Missed tackles are subjective. The number can vary depending on who’s doing the charting, and a difference of two missed tackles can make a world of difference when using terms like tackling efficiency. Also, most safeties are going to have high numbers (14 of them missed at least 14 tackles, per PFF, including Earl Thomas). And three, tackling is something a player can improve on. We saw that last year with Nate Allen.

Tackling is obviously an important part of playing defense for any NFL player. But it is still only a part of the big picture. Mitchell (6 feet, 210) has good size and can run, plus he’s only 26-years-old. Granted, he played on a team with a talented front seven last year, but Mitchell did a good job on the back end.

Given the market, I still think he’s a decent mid-tier option for the Eagles.

I watched more tape of Mitchell. He missed a tackle in each of the 2 games I checked out. Both times he was over-aggressive. On one, he came downhill very quickly and wanted to really hit Frank Gore. Mitchell got to the spot too quickly and was upright rather than in good tackling position. Gore gave him a simple move and Mitchell could only lunge for him. That kind of stuff can be worked on in practice.

Mitchell struggled in Oakland mainly due to injuries. He just couldn’t stay healthy early in his career. He showed enough in 2012 to get a deal with the Panthers and then had a breakout season.

Mitchell would be a risky signing. He could thrive or he could flop. The Eagles must feel that he could succeed in this system with as much interest as they are reportedly showing.

I think part of the safety rumours are because we have such a large hole at safety, it makes sense to link us to them, but it’s likely also because we have been kicking the tyres on a lot of them

    Tommy,

Do you have any concerns about Revis buying into the Chip Kelly way of life? He is amazing on the field, but I have gotten the impression before that he was a bit of a malcontent with the Jets and Tampa. Maybe this isn’t true or is he so good that you don’t worry about that stuff?

  8. 8 Stephen Stempo said at 8:32 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Think the Bears would like a swap of Graham for McClellin too. Both players are in mid-20’s, were 1st rounders and have 2 years left on original contracts for similar $. Sounds like a “win-win”.

  14. 14 Dominik said at 8:12 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Why are you so “in love” with a Revis signing, Tommy?

I wouldn’t say that I’m against his signing, he’s a great player. But especially if we talk about value – I’d think that Williams and Fletcher with Byrd/Ward as Safety would be better than Revis and Williams or Fletcher with a mid tier Safety.

We have two solid (but far from great) outside corners on our roster, I think those two don’t push the team into a deep playoff run, but they don’t harm you. Right now, we basically have zero safeties on our roster you could say the same thing about.

I don’t have anything against Revis, but I think a great Safety would have more value for this team (with Williams and Fletcher already here) than a great Corner.

But then again, I haven’t watched film on Byrd or Ward, you did. If they are very good but not great it could make sense.

One point I would make despite that argument is: Revis will get at least 11 million, with Shields getting 9 and Verner probably 10. Byrd is looking (doesn’t mean he’ll get it) for 9 million.

If we talk about value, 2 millions (maybe even more) are worth something.

  15. 15 Stephen Stempo said at 8:31 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I think perhaps you’re overvaluing our current corners a bit. While upgrading to a great safety would be a bigger upgrade you have to wonder if Byrd is worth it. Revis is absolutely a top tier corner. Is Byrd? He’s good, great even. Is he top 5? I’m not sure.

It also isn’t necesarilly a one or the other though. Getting Revis doesn’t mean we couldn’t still upgrade corner.

I’ll just say like Tommy said Revis is the kind of player you do roll the dice on.

  16. 16 Dominik said at 8:38 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Fair point. I would say that some people are undervaluing them. When Williams and Fletcher were signed, it said that both are good press corners. You can’t press with Chung behind them.

But you are right: if they aren’t better then what we saw last year, we should replace them. I just think that they would be better with a great Safety behind them, because they could play more press.

  17. 17 Stephen Stempo said at 8:45 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I don’t disagree. I like Williams edge and Fletcher played good. They both had pretty good moments too, but to me their just kind of meh. I never expect them to make a play I guess. No rule against getting a good safety or corner in the draft. Or both. Hard to say until after the draft what it will look like. One way or the other both those positions are going to get new blood this off-season.

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 8:36 AM on March 11th, 2014:

No you are right.,.we ain’t spending on starting CBs,,Cary and Brad are who we go to war with until their replacements are drafted and developed….lol don’t know what’s more absurd, Revis or Mitchell lol

Dan Snyder hasn’t been able to spend in two years, who has the discaplin to not over pay, and walk away from the bidding war first, Howie or Snyder? Lol Mitchell is a skin, and Snyder will have to overpay

  19. 19 GEAGLE said at 8:12 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Question: why would Anyone think we would sign Obrien Schofield when we could have claimed him off waivers like 3 times last year when we only had 1 OLB on our roster?

    Eagles will sign:
    ..
    Cory Graham
    ..
    Ward
    ..
    Jenkins
    ,,,
    Alex Carrington

    Cnris Cooks
    ..
    Bruce Cambell….

    Jammarri Lattimore…

If we can’t get Carrington the other DL we consider is Al Woods or Terrence Cody(non GUARENTEED roster spot)

  20. 20 Dominik said at 8:17 AM on March 11th, 2014:

First question: no OLB via FA (I have to admit, I googled Carrington, Cooks, Campell and Lattimore)? Do you think Howie will leave the bpa approach for that position in the draft? Or do you think we’ll go with the same 4 players like last season?

Second question: why did you get banned on Twitter already? I enjoyed you tweets, to be honest with you, I tried to follow you, but the system said that you have been banned. Is it because of the Kyle Long incident? (;))

  21. 21 GEAGLE said at 8:27 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I think cuz I set off a cyber riot in Chicago…me an Kyle were just having a friendly back and fourth, it’s not like I was being disrespectful or talking shit, but every bears fan went crazy about me talking about him leaving Chicago and coming here, like 300 people in Chicago retweet our interactions, and I got suspended for a ewe days, which is crazy because it wasn’t even an argument…

Carrington really efficient, interior pass rusher to rotate with Curry and Cox on 3rd down, but last year, check out his 2012 numbers. if we can’t get him, we will look to steelers Al Woods to backup Logan..

Chips cool is a 2010 CB draft bust of Vikings (34th pick I believe), rough start to his career, but screw marsh! I’d rather see what our coaches can do with this 6’2 212lb corner who ran a 4.4
..I been posting how we would sign Corey Graham since November…ITS GOING DOWN!!

Bruce Cambell from raiders is a cheap super athlete at OG
    ..
Lattimore is just a cheap ST standout, compete for roster spot at backup ILB…

I want OLB, there just really aren’t any…we have OLBs that do some things well, but we don’t have that edge rusher..everyone like Neal! but he practically does everything well except be that edge rusher, so I don’t see why we would pay millions for another OLB who isn’t the edge rusher solution for us..

Schofield hit waivers like 3 times last year, and every time is as screaming for us to sign him! we didn’t, so why would I think we would outbid teams for him now? Makes no sense…
    ….
eagles will make that splash at safety…only question is do we just add one, or will we get Ward and Jenkins for like 11mil?

  22. 22 GEAGLE said at 8:28 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Correction on carrington(won’t let me edit): really efficient interior pass rusher, his best football is still in front of him, he was HURT last year so check out his 2012 stats
    ..
I think we want OLB, but there aren’t any pass rushers, no point in spending for more OLBs who aren’t that 10 sack guy…probably possible we can still pull of a cuop and sign Mike Johnson! but he will be so damn expensive so I wouldn’t hold my breathe….doubt we are done trying to pry Dion away from Miami….if not, they will have to adress OLB In the first two rounds of draft

  23. 23 Stephen Stempo said at 8:35 AM on March 11th, 2014:

  24. 24 GEAGLE said at 8:50 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Edit: Chris cooks 2010 draft bust, not Chip cool lol

  25. 25 Dominik said at 9:44 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I had to think for a second, but got there. “Chips cool is a 2010 CB draft bust” is a funny sentence, nonetheless. 😉

  26. 26 GEAGLE said at 10:00 AM on March 11th, 2014:

You saw my convo with Long…it was just a playful back and fourth…it’s not Ike I was disrespecting him or badgering him and he wasn’t responding me…why the hell did I get suspended? All I can think of is because every Chicago fan went crazy at the thought of losing long….normally when I get banned, I know nd I’m deciding to do something that I’m expecting to get banned for…I have no idea why this happened…
    ..
Worst thing I said was, “everyone knows you wear your midnight green pajamas with the Footies attached when Lance Briggs isn’t around :)”….at first he was laughing when I was telling him we all know he will eventually be an eagle…but then when all the Chicago fans started freaking out. He hit me with the “#BEARDOWN go home you are drunk”…nothing bad happened, nothing disrespectful was said…no idea why I got suspended.
    ..
ATleast Chung confirmed that he was playing thru a badly hurt shoulder all year. As I suspected during the season…I KNLW he had a bad year. But we have to respect that

One of Bill Polian’s top free agency rules is that you don’t pay a free agent more than your A and B+ players on your team.
Now I’m asking you where Byrd would rank in this regard? Would he be one of our A or B+ players and how much do these earn?!

  31. 31 sonofdman said at 8:31 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I would like to see us getting an RB. Brown was a disappointment last year, and while Polk played more, and pretty well, down the stretch, both of them should be pushed and have some serious competition. It’s possible a rookie could do that, but I would also like to see a veteran added.

Upgrading the back-up spot, whether by improved play by Polk/Brown, or a new player would also make sharing Shady’s workload a lot easier

  35. 35 ACViking said at 1:26 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Jerick McKinnon. He’s headed to the Birds on draft day. Hope so at least

  36. 36 new coach said at 8:37 AM on March 11th, 2014:

Would you trade for Revis? If so, what would you trade? 4th rounder? Best way to get Revis is to deal for him, if we want him

  37. 37 Dominik said at 8:43 AM on March 11th, 2014:

For 16 millions, you don’t even trade a 7th round pick. I can’t speak for Tommy, but if one team makes a trade, I for one sure hope it’s not the Eagles.

And I can’t think of a bidding war via trade. 7th round is the best the Buccs can do (if there would be an 8th round in the draft, it would be an 8th rounder), every teams knows that there aren’t a lot of bidders.

The only reason to trade for Revis would be if you don’t want to let him hit the market. But if you’re okay with paying him 16 millions, you can offer 14 or 15 millions in FA and you’ll probably get him. On your own terms.

2 things, first it sucks to be in China to have coverage of my beloved eagles (worst timezone with US). Second and most important, I don’t care about the reports because the eagles always do deals under the table, no one saw asomugha coming nor fletcher,…. They are the best to give you false informations. Just sayin’ from all the safeties, only one wasn’t link with the birds and it will be a future midnight green: Jenkins.

  41. 41 nicolajNN said at 9:10 AM on March 11th, 2014:

So true, just thinking back to last year we heard nothing about most of the players we signed. The only one I remember some buzz around was Casey, and I think that started from Caplan.

On the other hand there were rumours about interest in Sean Smith and Eric Winston amongst other.

  42. 42 Frencheaglesfan said at 9:18 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I totally believe that when reports say eagles are interested into revis or byrd they are just trolling the other teams because teams fear their cap space and that enable them to have a red carpet to sign the ones they were really coveting and also putting the other teams in bad cap situation. trololololo

  43. 43 deg0ey said at 9:29 AM on March 11th, 2014:

I like that list. I agree that Revis is the kind of guy to spend big for and I’d definitely prefer him to Byrd and Ward. In the safety department, I kinda have a thing for Clemons – he doesn’t stand out much for good or for bad and I think that’s the kind of guy we should look for.

In terms of DL, what do people think of Antonio Smith? He’s a name I’ve seen kicked about a bit and he seems like a solid pass rusher with 3-4 experience.

  44. 44 GEAGLE said at 9:33 AM on March 11th, 2014:

    ….
Don’t understand how people could be happy giving Revis 10-13mil, when we can have Ward AND Jenkins for like 11mil

Hell at Revis money I’d rather have a young Verner who can ATleast grow with this team…

NNamdi scared us away from signing all big name FA, yet they will spend on 30yr old Revis! who will be doing sit-ups in his driveway and holding out after a good year? I don’t get it

It’s priceless to have such a mentality. Now I know how Patriots, Seahawks or 49ers fans must be thinking. 😉

I’m surprised that Tommy would dip his foot in the Revis pool. That is definitely risky, BUT if you can take away half of the field, that is huge. I hear that his current contract can all be converted to signing bonus money. You can get him and adjust that $16M one time hit to spread it out over a couple years. Not bad.

Defense is definitely the bigger need, but I would actually be very happy to add to the offense. Seems to me that one of the important things about being a dominant team with Superbowl aspirations is to have a feature of your team simply be dominant, whether that is offense, defense, passing, pass rush, etc. We have a very good offense, but if we can push it to a flat out dominant offense, I do think that makes a difference.

Umm Revis has to be cut first and take a reasonable. Funny people okay paying fifteen mil a year to Revis What about all the excuses w signing Byrd or ward and lockerroom moral and chemistry and fit and overpaying for hired guns and resigning foles and cox and Boykin And Kendricks and having cap room. Revis held out twice and forced a trade for god sake and we aren’t worried about his attitude and fit and what he may do after one year like he did w jets after he resigned. Seems very hypocritical to me. Byrd will cost about 5-7 mil cheaper and cover a position of need and we know him better. Also allows your corners to play press effectively w help overtop. Hilarious.

  124. 124 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:09 PM on March 11th, 2014:

character issues aside (i didn’t really follow any of it with Revis…)
the difference is that you would pay top dollar for a ‘special’ player in Revis, albeit one who may be nearing the end of his career, maybe not. (if we do sign him, i hope the FO does their homework checking him out!)
with Byrd, Tommy has already explained that he does not feel that he is a ‘special’ player (see this from a few weeks ago: http://igglesblitz.com/2014/03/byrd-hunting-2/)

so perhaps that accounts for the difference in pay we are talking about?

  125. 125 TheRogerPodacter said at 3:12 PM on March 11th, 2014:

that said, i’m still hoping we get Byrd (AND Jenkins… I can dream, right?)
this gives us a versatile guy and a centerfield ballhawk type guy.

i think Chip & Billy value turnovers very much so that increases Byrd’s value for us. We would still want a guy like Jenkins so that we do not have to rely on Wolff who may or may not improve upon last year and it would truly give us the flexibility to go BPA in the draft

  126. 126 Tom W said at 3:20 PM on March 11th, 2014:

I understand the argument I just don’t think Revis is a good fit or leader or great for our lockerroom and I don’t think he is worth twice as much as a Tj ward … Shit for Revis money we could get Byrd and Tj ward and have best set of safeties in the league vs Seattle. Tying sixteen mil in one pkayer better be a franchise qb, best pass rusher in the NFL or an elite player at 25 not going on 29. Personnally if rather have verner at 25 than Revis at 29 and the baggage he could bring. And Byrd fits better, he is a top 4 safety out of 64 safeties, we know him and he creates turnovers. Aside from hof player comparison Byrd is better than great majority of safeties in nfl and most good safeties will be signed to long term deals after this yr

  127. 127 A_T_G said at 4:37 PM on March 11th, 2014:

I appreciate that your argument has become more nuanced and less calling everyone who disagrees stupid as FA approached.

Ironically, the arguments you make against Revis in favor of Verneer work almost perfectly as arguments against Byrd in favor of Jenkins.

  128. 128 Maggie said at 4:20 PM on March 11th, 2014:

How many were pining for a “special” player. A “difference maker”, etc. Revis is that. Of course everything is about money, and wouldn’t you hold out on the Jets? I followed his recovery a bit. No one ever worked so hard to get back, except maybe Adrian Peterson.

  129. 129 Mike Roman said at 3:33 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Playing 920 total snaps missing 18 tackles doesnt mean he didnt miss a tackle 98% of the time.. It could mean he wasnt in a play to make a tackle.. Snaps mean nothing when it comes to tackle count n efficiency.. It should be tackling attempts to tackling made n missed

  133. 133 ICDogg said at 3:44 PM on March 11th, 2014:

But then you run into the guys who don’t even attempt to make a tackle if it is not easy to make, and those guys might be the most “efficient” because they don’t even try.

  135. 135 Patrick said at 3:55 PM on March 11th, 2014:

NFL.com has Mitchell making 66 tackles and PFF has him missing 18, for a combines 84 tackle attempts, which means that Mike Mitchell misses roughly 21 % of his tackles.

  136. 136 GENETiC-FREAK said at 3:59 PM on March 11th, 2014:

  137. 137 Patrick said at 4:03 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Obviously its a stat with a lot of bias. Obviously PFF might be wrong and some teams(bengals one of them) are maybe a little generous when assigning tackles to players(Mitchell might have had more tackles lowering his miss percentage), stats isn’t everything and many more, but still. If you miss 1 out of 5 you have a problem.

  141. 141 ICDogg said at 3:55 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Frank Schwab: S T.J. Ward to Broncos: $5.5 million per year. Quick take: Good signing for a Broncos defense that needs to improve a bit. They still have to figure out their middle linebacker position, but Ward is a great chess piece for coordinator Jack Del Rio to scheme with.

At that price, we could have signed both him and Jenkins.

  180. 180 goeagles55 said at 5:22 PM on March 11th, 2014:

26 and a former first round pick by the Saints who let him walk. Only thing I like about the deal is that the Eagles are not tied to Jenkins for the long term, in real terms this is probably a 2 year deal.

Somethings wrong in the state of Denmark, the Saints found the ca$h and cap room to sign Byrd. Jenkins is just not a play making safety. IMO he’s definitely an upgrade over Chung, and debatable upgrade over Allen, although there’s a possibility the Eagles resign Allen.

  191. 191 D3FB said at 10:33 PM on March 11th, 2014:

We had 31 forced turnovers last year, the third most in the league. This “playmaking safety” that will suddenly greatly improve the defense is a bit of hogwash. Philly fetishizes safety play because of 20, but the organization was smart to sign Jenkins who is a versatile solid safety, who they feel is the best scheme fit and isn’t getting the crazy money Byrd got.

  192. 192 47_Ronin said at 10:53 PM on March 11th, 2014:

I agree with most of your points. But the Eagles have had playmaking safeties before Dawk, like Wes Hopkins and Andre Waters. And I watched a SB a month ago where a safety drafted in the 6th round dominated one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history. I think Jenkins is an improvement over Chung, but whether this was a smart move and how it is graded will have to wait until January 2015.

The way I look at it:

Nate Allen BC (Before Chip) was a below-average, below-replacement level player.

Nate Allen AC (After Chip) was probably replacement level. Maybe slightly lower, but definitely a major improvement over Allen BC.

If Malcolm Jenkins AC improves as much over his BC self as Nate Allen did, we’ll have an above average starting safety getting paid reasonable money. He has the body and athleticism to do it.

Point being, upgrade is an upgrade. Can’t have pro bowlers at every position.

While 40-yard dash times recorded at Pro Days always should be taken with a grain (or mountain) of perspective, Barr’s time carries some weight as Mora specifically mentioned that Barr’s time was “electronic.”

    __________

Happened in 1972 at Villanova when All American WR Mike Siani — in pre-combine days — ran a sub-4.5 40 and the Raiders selected him 21st overall. Turns out he the field was mis-marked. He was more a 4.6 guy.

Also happened in 1968 at Miss Valley State — a huge WR named David McDaniels (6’4 210) ran a sub-4.5 40. Cowboys spent a 2nd Rd pick on him. At training camp, he ran a 4.7 40. several times.

So the Cowboys traded him to the Eagles for a 3rd Rd pick in ’69 — who, after timing him, cut him.

Jenkins said there wasn’t much talk w: Saints through FA process. Philly told him he was “No. 1 on their list.” Eagles called ASAP March 8

  298. 298 SteveH said at 7:45 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Hearing a lot talk about how we could have had ward at the same price. Stop and think for a second folks, if NFL teams thought Ward was a top tier safety talent, he would have gotten paid somewhere. Teams around the league were bidding for his services and he only landed a 5.5 mil contract.

If Ward had gotten 7.5 and we signed Jenkins for 7.5, I think this argument is legit, but the fact that he signed (on the first day of FA no less) to a deal substantially lower than projected means that he probably has a better reputation with fans/media than coaches/FO’s.

  299. 299 ICDogg said at 7:51 PM on March 11th, 2014:

They committed more long term to Ward than we did to Jenkins, but the deals seem to be very similar for the first 3 years. Close enough at least for comparisons sake.

  302. 302 ICDogg said at 8:20 PM on March 11th, 2014:

nope. Guarantees are the most important part of these deals.

  303. 303 A_T_G said at 8:30 PM on March 11th, 2014:

Typically, yes, but neither of these deals have a bunch of funny money at the end. I bet both players could actually get all of this money. If a player gets the unguaranteed money, it doesn’t matter how much was guaranteed.

If both players flop, we were smarter. If the Broncos don’t want that 4th year with Ward, we were smarter. If Jenkins turns into a good player for us, he might end up costing more over the 4 years.

Regardless, I think it is valid to compare two contracts signed for the same position for similar average salaries hours apart.

  304. 304 ICDogg said at 8:32 PM on March 11th, 2014:

    Yeah, I guess.

The difference is the cost of dumping the player if he turns out to be too, er, Chung-ish.

  305. 305 A_T_G said at 8:43 PM on March 11th, 2014:

  306. 306 SteveH said at 9:06 PM on March 11th, 2014:

At the end of the day, the whole point of my post was that TJ Ward didn’t get nearly as much money as people were predicting, so that tells you that NFL teams valued him less than his reputation would suggest, especially when you consider that the Browns signed an aging Donte Whitner for a larger deal and let their own guy walk.

So people saying OMG we could have had ward for cheap – the fact that he could be had for cheap (or cheaper than expected) should say something, especially with good safety play being so coveted in today’s NFL.
