Day 3 – The Scout’s Day
Posted: May 10th, 2014 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 77 Comments »It isn’t all that hard to identify who the top players in a draft class. Those guys stood out during the season, at the Senior Bowl, at the Combine and/or at their Pro Day. They are really good players. Day 3 of the draft is a different story. You now have players who were one-year wonders or who are injured or who underachieved or lack ideal size or who didn’t work out well. And so on. The water is no longer clear. It is now murky and the teams who did the best job of scouting are the ones who will manage to find good players.
Let’s look at who the best available players are. Here are the guys from my Top 100 that are left.

Those are generic lists for all 32 teams. There are 32 different lists. There is probably some consensus about the top player, but there could still be 10 to 15 different guys listed atop the various boards.
The Eagles hold the top pick. Howie Roseman said on WIP this morning that the Eagles have a player targeted, but that the ideal situation would be to move back, add more picks and still get that player. The Eagles have to figure out just how badly they want this player. They also have to guess a bit about whether the other teams would take him. Is the risk of moving back worth the reward of extra picks?
I can’t answer that without knowing their board. The NFL trade chart will tell you this pick isn’t all that valuable, but reality can differ. If there is a player that a team really wants, they will pay the price to get him. Teams have had all night to decide who they want and how badly they want that player.
Someone could covet QB Tom Savage or Zach Mettenberger. Or maybe Aaron Murray, Brett Smith or David Fales. There are some really good CBs still there that a team could covet. You get the point. All it takes is one of those teams to make a strong offer. For the Eagles to drop back 15 spots, a team overpaying would give up 5th and 6th round picks. If the Eagles just move back a couple of spots, they might have to settle for just a 6th round pick. It all depends on how many calls they are getting.
Let’s take a look at some things.

Who are some prospects for the Eagles?
QB: Aaron Murray, David Fales, Brett Smith, Gale Gilbert, Keith Wenning, Bryn Renner
RB: Devonta Freeman, Andre Williams, Lache Seastrunk, Marion Grice, Storm Johnson, De’Anthony Thomas, James White, Tyler Gaffney, Rajon Neal
TE: Arthur Lynch, Blake Annen, Colt Lyerla, Marcel Jensen, Jake Murphy, Alex Bayer, Xavier Grimble, Joe Don Duncan
WR: Martavis Bryant, Robert Herron, Bruce Ellington, Kevin Norwood, Kain Colter, Jared Abrederis, Devon Street, Shaq Evans, Jeff Janis, Brandon Coleman, Michael Campanaro, Jalen Saunders
OL: Dakota Dozier, Charles Leno, Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff, Matt Patchan, Zach Fulton, Trey Hopkins, Kevin Pamphile, James Hurst, Donald Hawkins, Garrett Scott, James Stone
DL: Daquan Jones, Brent Urban, Taylor Hart, Shamar Stephen, Justin Ellis, Daniel McCullers, Deandre Coleman, George Uko, Zack Kerr, Eathyn Manumaleuna
OLB: James Gayle, Chris Smith, Trevor Reilly, Devon Kennard, Ronald Powell, Adrian Hubbard, Aaron Lynch, Michael Sam, Howard Jones, Larry Webster
ILB: Christian Jones, Telvin Smith, Jordan Tripp, Jordan Zumwalt, Brock Coyle, Shayne Skov, Lamin Barrow, Avery Williamson
S: Dion Bailey, Brock Vereen, Craig Loston, Ed Reynolds, Isaiah Lewis, Ahmad Dixon, Isaiah Newsome, Daniel Sorensen, Avery Patterson, Vinnie Sunseri
CB: Bashaud Breeland, Keith McGill, Terrance Mitchell, Aaron Colvin, Pierre Desir, Jaylen Watkins, Dontae Johnson, Victor Hampton, Marcus Roberson, Antone Exum, Walt Aiken, EJ Gaines, Nevin Lawson
The thinnest position is ILB. I hope that is the spot the Eagles target first, but they can’t do that if they don’t have high grades on the remaining players. Christian Jones testing positive at the Combine could have affected his grade. Jordan Zumwalt might not be as fast as they prefer. I have no idea what they will think of Tripp. I love his speed and energy, but we don’t know if he is the kind of player Bill Davis is looking for.
There are good choices at CB so I’ll be disappointed if the Eagles don’t land one of them.
My bet is that the Eagles do trade back. I just hope they don’t go too far.
I could live with a scenario like this (staying put):
4th – CB Bashaud Breeland – Clemson
5th – DL Shamar Stephen – UConn
5th – OL Matt Patchan – Boston College
7th – DB Antone Exum – Virginia Tech (could play CB or S)
I’m really hoping we make a trade. I want another 5th round pick.
_
Were drafting Dontae today.
Or Exum…expecting one of the two
I’m upset they haven’t traded Graham. Guess nobody wants him.
The thought is that he wouldn’t return more than a 5th, so I’m not entirely surprised we haven’t traded him yet. I would expect that trade to happen in the 5th.
Tommy, you just can’t figure out where to put Sproles?
awesome breakdown Tommy – sending another donation today
1. I’ve never heard of Bashaud Breeland before 30 seconds ago. Now I’m going to yell at my TV trying to convince the Eagles to take him.
2. I’d completely forgotten about the existence of Emil Igwenagu until reading the depth chart.
3. If nothing else bringing Aaron Murray to Philadelphia as a late round developmental project would make Kacie McDonnell happy, and I’m pretty sure that can’t be a bad thing.
LOL at number 1!
CBs – Breeland or Desir please!
Would they dare take TE Colt Lyerla in round 7? Talk about risk/reward!
CB Aaron Colvin with the knee injury, is also a 1st round talent, could go soon.
I hope they do. And you know Chip would love a 3 TE set with Celek, Ertz, and Lyerla
So disappointed to see Jordan Matthews flashing gang signs on the way from the green room to the podium last night!
Crazy thought: by drafting 2 WR, will the Eagles entertain trade offers for Jeremy Maclin? I can imagine Cleveland and Carolina having interest. Cleveland especially, due to Josh Gordon’s possible suspension.
Crazy thought indeed
Trade a guy on a one year deal who was just a free agent a few weeks ago? How exactly would that work?
Is it technically impossible for that to happen? Serious question.
Apparently he’s been known to hang out with a notorious Southern gang known as the Hushpuppies. I thought we were past all that!
Tommy – I didn’t see Sproles on the Depth Chart.
Desir or Breeland and I’d feel a lot better about the Huff pick, which I’m coming around on anyway.
Love that every pick under Kelly seems to be really good kids that are easy to root for. I know it doesn’t matter to some of you guys, but I appreciate it.
My dream scenario:
4th: Desir
5th: Colvin
5th: Ronald Powell
7th: Dion Bailey
More picks would be nice
Doubt Dion last til 7
On the clock I guess
Think we are trading back
Picks in
Probably going to lean on your opinions as these rounds go on, haven’t researched much now that we are getting this deep haha
So much depth, that my opinions probabky don’t mean much. There is an absurd amount of talent left
..
Did the late round check list below
I’m assuming we add someone from each list:
…
1) ILB who can cover in subpackages: Jones,Telvin! the kid from BC Minter knows. Lokombo
…
2) Brent Urban, Josh Mauro! Taylor hart as thorntons backup
…
3) Shemar or Deandre Coleman, possibly Baeu Allen late or Undrafted as Logan’s backup
…
Don’t sleep on Eagles and RB devonte Freeman, or weapons like Lyerla,Jeff Janis, Shaq Evans..
…
Dontae Johnson or Antone Exum, Jalen Watkins, Desir,AiKENS,Terrence Mitchell
…
Well Watkins out of the last group…so far so good with the late round check list lol
Would we have heard of a trade by now?
Not neccessarily
I’m rusty with the later rounds and shorter clock and draft management
Picks in..nevermind
Pray the curse of the other brother doesn’t bite us in the ass again
Jaylen Watkins.
good pick
Watkins, CB, it is
Ok. Looks good to me.
Wonder how we use him.
Everything is about versatility so far.
Cool, down with Watkins.
Ye olde cornerback run…
CB=Safety=ST=Watkins!
will he play S for us? can he hit?
Next Dawkins? Nope. He’s more like Nate Allen.
depends how you feel about nate allen i guess. do you think he could be a functional safety?
Yes. He’s more of a cover guy than a slugger. He’s going to probably play CB/S for us though.
thanks
Draft for Eagles will be predictible in year 3, at least they are pretty consistent in what they want.
Seems more like Malcolm Jenkins to me. Jenkins being a Safety who can cover the slot, Watkins being a CB who can play center field.
Exactly. We now have two hybrids that seem to be able to play everywhere in the secondary.
There goes Breeland. NYJ probably takes Desir.
Falcons might take him
Watkins was a quality selection….tho I would have prefered trading back, and the fact that Sammy Watkins is his brother scares me 🙂 but definitely a nice addition to our secondary
…
Half brother… so it should half scare you.
If it was Danny Watkins’ half brother, it would make me shit.
GEagle, now we need a good ILB or DT don’t you think?
There’s depth at both positions still, probably some UDFAs as well.
Be shocked if we don’t add either Taylor hart! Josh Mauro or Brent urban at DE…and I’d be pretty surprised if we didn’t find a backup for Bennie Logan in rounds 6 or 7(Deandre Coleman, Shemar Stephens) ….and we absolutely need a subpackage alternative to Demeco Ryan: Christian Jones,Telvin Smith, the kid from BC, Lokombo…
Can you imagine the conversations at that dinner table???
Thought Chip would have really liked RB Devonta Freeman…
…
Wonder if Chip drafts RB Storm Johnson late,.,I’m happy all of chips potential early RB targets are off the board. Was worries we would spend a pick on RB
He needs OL backups with potential on offense. But I’d like to see more D adds.
Not neccessarily,,..we assume we need OL, but we really have no clue. For all we know. Tobin,Bamiro and Kelly could have developed into players that look like starters. We as fans don’t know what we have on Our bench so we can’t know what we need… But, like you, I would think we need to add ATleast 1 OL…hoping for Kevin Pamphile, converted basketball player. Round 5-6
I liked what I saw from Dennis Kelly in his rookie year. Lot of promise, but I don’t know how Stoutland likes him.
Jesus, can we trade Bryce Brown and Brandon Graham already? I want more picks!
One is now gone.
Billy Davis pick – according to Tommy, he went to the Florida pro day plus a Philly visit. They must like his size.
What is to like about 5-11? No critique, just don’t think his size is a pro. His speed seems nice.
thought he is 6’0- better than 5-9 or 5-10
I always thought Jalen Saunders was being mocked much later than he should…
The only gripe I have with this pick is he wasn’t much of a playmaker in college. We are going to need a guy with some playmaking ability in the secondary sometime right? Well, besides Boy King.
He can make plays through disguise. Is he the safety, is he the CB, is he blitzing? If they can get him up to 200lbs, i’m ok.
Chip saying he’s excited to get him in here, and really begin to evaluate how we want to use him on this defense. Not decided what position we want to use him at.
Figured we would add a DB like him, Antone Exum, Dontae Johnson versatile enough to wear multiple hats in our secondaryl and figure out where to play them later…Good pick!! And our Secondary is starting to have more depth than some people realize
49ers getting Bruce Ellington isn’t even fair.
They are blowing the 49ers draft hard.
new thread
Bryce Brown traded to bills for 2 future picks!! Well I’m guessing we add a rb at some point
do the eagles think about DAT in round 5?
