Friday Night

Rounds 2 and 3 are here. The Eagles sit at pick 54, 21 picks away. I’m hoping a good WR will slide down and that seems likely since this is such a deep, talented group.

The Eagles aren’t locked into WR. They could go any number of directions. Could be OL or DL. Could go for an ILB. RB wouldn’t be my choice, but could be the target. This is all about which players are available.

Trading up doesn’t seem likely. Trading down is possible. I could live with that, since there are good picks in rounds 3-5. Adding another mid-round pick would be cool.

The first pick off the board is an OG. Let’s hope there is a run on DEs. That’ll push some good guys down to 54.

    yea … seriously, stop

  9. 9 Insomniac said at 7:18 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Lol I’m fine with that. Lawrence can’t get off of blocks for his life.

  10. 10 SteveH said at 7:18 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Smacks of desperation, Cowboys have nothing on that line.

  11. 11 Jernst said at 7:19 PM on May 9th, 2014:

    agreed

  12. 12 ACViking said at 7:18 PM on May 9th, 2014:

    ‘Boys get Lawrence?

Should be interesting to watch, twice per season, who made the right choice at the DE/ROLB position . . . Birds or Boys

  13. 13 SteveH said at 7:18 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Reminds me of when they got Anthony Spencer. Outside of the 2nd half of 1 season Spencer hasn’t been much of a factor.

  14. 14 ACViking said at 7:20 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Difference here is, this year, BOTH the Eagles and Cowboys selected a pass-rushing DE/ROLB.

In ’07, Spencer was the Boys pick when Reid decided Kolb would be the future

  15. 15 Jernst said at 7:19 PM on May 9th, 2014:

after watching a decent amount of his highlights (i know…not the best film study), Smith looks a good amount more explosive than Lawrence

  16. 16 mksp said at 7:19 PM on May 9th, 2014:

    Yep. Character issues.

YOU GUYS STILL THINK THE EAGLES REACHED? <– Me yelling at 95% of Eagles fans.

  17. 17 ACViking said at 7:22 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Eagles didn’t reach. And definitely character issues for Lawrence.

Lawrence and Smith were bunched w/ Jerry Attaochu.

So the value was right. For both the Eagles and Cowboys.

If DLawrence doesn’t get kicked out of the NFL, should be an interesting sidelight for the next 2-3 years. Until a new story line develops

  18. 18 GEAGLE said at 7:26 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yup yup…bet someone gets nervous and take Attaucho soon

  19. 19 mksp said at 7:27 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I don’t think they reached, loved the pick. But spent too much time listening to sports radio and reading twitter today.

    Should have known better.

  20. 20 ACViking said at 7:35 PM on May 9th, 2014:

The premium on pass rushers keeps going up.

5 years ago? All these guys like Smith and Lawrence and Jerry Attaochu . . . they’re much lower picks.

The kind the Steelers lived on for years.

  21. 21 shah8 said at 7:37 PM on May 9th, 2014:

After thinking about it today, I still think it’s a reach. I decided that the Eagles were at a loss, because I think the probable best pick was what NE got, Dominique Easley.

  22. 22 FrenchEagles said at 7:20 PM on May 9th, 2014:

And people think Marcus Smith would have stayed for long?

  23. 23 bridgecoach said at 7:20 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Looks like a run on pass rushers underway

  24. 24 Jernst said at 7:21 PM on May 9th, 2014:

The drop off in pass rushers is severe at this point in this years draft. Eagles were not stupid to go OLB in round 1 and wait a round for a WR to inevitably fall.

  25. 25 scratcherk said at 7:21 PM on May 9th, 2014:

    Point values. Cowboys did overpay

    Redskins (#34): 560 points
    Cowboys (#47+#78): 630 points

Difference they overpaid by: 70 points = fourth round pick (#112)

  26. 26 Jernst said at 7:22 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I find it really interesting to see the teams trading up in this supposedly deep draft over paying. It’s happened quite a bit so far. You’d think it would be a buyers market for teams that want to trade up.

  27. 27 Daniel Norman Richwine said at 7:24 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Howie had to take that into account when trading down, rather than up.

  28. 28 ACViking said at 7:24 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Higher the quality, the higher the cost.

Not the opposite — at least, that’s my theory.

  29. 29 Jernst said at 7:27 PM on May 9th, 2014:

true…i just feel like the difference in costs this year is less pronounced than other years, yet the price of moving up seems even higher than usual. I can’t help but agree with the guy over at eaglesrewind.com … draft is a crap shoot, might as well make as many picks as you can and not over value your certainty in a single player.

  30. 30 ACViking said at 7:33 PM on May 9th, 2014:

  44. 44 GEAGLE said at 7:25 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Demarcus Lawrence is already off the board. People complaining about Marcus will look dumb when all the pass rusher are gone by 45..

  55. 55 ACViking said at 7:31 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Could be issues with perceived ability in space.

Plus, he’s a pure 3-4 OLB. So his attractiveness may be limited to only half the teams.

  56. 56 Daniel Norman Richwine said at 7:29 PM on May 9th, 2014:

the point, Eagles adding picks in historically deep draft while others shedding them.

  86. 86 Patrick said at 7:37 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yeah, and its the DL guys who doesnt really fit the Eagles. Let Jernigan go next, even if all the WR(Lee, Latimer, Robinson, Matthews) is gone after a run, it would guarantee defenders like Joyner, Tuitt, Nix, KVN etc. being on the board.

  87. 87 Jarock said at 7:33 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I really don’t understand the fascination from Eagles fans and bloggers for Marquise Lee. He’s about the same size as Maclin, slower, and has suspect hands. He’s also a medical risk. Yes, I know he’s polished and put up crazy numbers the previous two years, but I’d rather take on the WR with size and upside.

Re: Why Mike Quick . . . Not the Whole Story

The Bills selected Clemson WR Perry Tuttle at No. 19.

    Why did Buffalo draft Tuttle?

Because at the Senior Bowl, Eagles Coach Dick Vermeil was chatting with Bills Head Coach Chuck Know.

And Vermeil told Knox he loved Tuttle.

And that’s why Buffalo took Tuttle.

  272. 272 Ark87 said at 8:09 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Anyone else having trouble keeping track of all these trades?

  274. 274 GEAGLE said at 8:07 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I don’t understand why we wasted a pick trading up…can’t give it an A plus..B+ pick but we didn’t play our hand well IMO. If we liked him more than the rest we couldn’t have liked him that much more that was worth losing a 4th..like the kid, don’t see why we needed to lose a pick…can’t applaud this, but I don’t mind adding the kid

  275. 275 Jernst said at 8:09 PM on May 9th, 2014:

yea…I might be wrong, but I didn’t see the need to trade up either. Really think he might have been there at 54

  276. 276 GEAGLE said at 8:10 PM on May 9th, 2014:

How much higher could he really have been rated than a WR available at 54? If two more WRs come off the board, than you get nervous and trade up..the giants weren’t drafting another WR, so why the hell would we trade up in front of them? Poorly played

  277. 277 Jarock said at 8:11 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I would have been happier with the Eagles sitting back and taking the best WR @ their original spot, but I like the player.

What BPA? Who heard of that? It’s reach in every round. It’s the opposite of SEA. Whatever SEA did is what i would do, they trade back, i’m trading back.

  279. 279 anon said at 8:12 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yeah I don’t understand either — think they are scared of runs on players? So much fro BPA — it’s reach city.

I don’t think he would have been there but someone in that group would have been, i guess Eagles had him rated MUCH higher than all those other guys.

Again Eagles finding great value in their trades:

    Titans (#42): 480 points
    Eagles (#54 + #122): 410 points

Now what they’re doing with those picks…

  288. 288 Insomniac said at 8:11 PM on May 9th, 2014:

It might have been ok according to the value chart but would you really give up a decent depth guy for a #2 receiver with other potential #1 receivers on the board?

  289. 289 GEAGLE said at 8:12 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Giants and bills weren’t taking a WR…no reason to trade ahead of them

  290. 290 Insomniac said at 8:14 PM on May 9th, 2014:

There’s still 3 WRs that I would rather have other Matthews too. Maybe we;re overrating some guys.

I don’t love him, but measurables wise he’s great, he’s got experience in the system. If CK can coach him fine.

  292. 292 ACViking said at 8:10 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Kelly started to fall for Matthews when the kid came to the Senior Bowl having studied the CBs he’d be facing.

    Then Matthews nails the Combine.

  293. 293 GEAGLE said at 8:11 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Giants and Bills weren’t drafting a WR, why trade ahead of them? Poorly played. Come on Howie you are better than that

    yea really puzzling

  295. 295 Ark87 said at 8:13 PM on May 9th, 2014:

wondering if it was a matter of trading parter, 12 spots for a 4th was good value (even if the pick was not), might 6 spots up might have been asking the same price, maybe just figured they might as well go up too high? dunno

  296. 296 scratcherk said at 8:14 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yea, I think they were probably going down the line with a lowball offer and the Titans bit.

  297. 297 Jernst said at 8:16 PM on May 9th, 2014:

    that would make some sense

  298. 298 FrenchEagles said at 8:14 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I think they contacted all teams above them, and the moved the most possible for the least. Maybe they could have moved to 46 instead of 42… For a 4th round pick.

  299. 299 xlGmanlx said at 8:47 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Not as big a deal with that extra 3rd. Who’s to say another team didn’t want to jump?

    “look…”

  311. 311 anon said at 8:32 PM on May 9th, 2014:

I don’t miss his 12% drop rate. They are drafting scared this draft seems to me. OR they don’t like other guys nearly as much as LEE and Matthews, etc.

  314. 314 Ark87 said at 8:26 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Guy on pe.com has a pretty good theory, essentially we *had* to have 1 of 2 WR’s, saw Lee go and we immediately pounced to make sure we got the other guy. A type of reach perhaps, but it’s good to know Chip *really* wanted him.

maybe I’m the only one, but I’m fairly pleased with these first two picks the more I watch them. Definitely unexpected, but I think the Eagles are doing the most with the picks they have so far.

  319. 319 anon said at 8:40 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Yeah i’m hating but Kelly is getting guys he wants. I think he’s got VERY specific criteria so it’s harder, but we’re definitely picking for need, which is disspointing b/c we’ve heard BPA every day for the last two months.

  320. 320 xlGmanlx said at 8:39 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Where are all the armchair GM’s that thought Van Noy and Murphy were going to be available rounds 10-24? Matthew’s is a Kelly guy, high character and consistent college production. I’m sure we will still have the “I would have…. traded back 2 rounds and got 3 picks and signed him as an UFA.” That extra 3rd now looms huge giving up a 4th.

  321. 321 Jarock said at 8:49 PM on May 9th, 2014:

Looks like we can put the kibosh on the theory that we could’ve gotten a quality 3-4 LB with pick 54 too. I don’t see a single person who I would consider an upgrade. Can’t quite claim happy but I am satisfied with this draft thus far.
