The Hunt for #1

Posted: November 30th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 104 Comments »

Even though the Eagles played on Thursday, today was a big day for the Eagles. The team is 9-3 and in the hunt for the top spot in the NFC. The other teams in the mix are the Cardinals and Packers.

Arizona played against the Falcons and lost 29-18. That drops the Cardinals to 9-3. Their offense has been awful without Carson Palmer. They went 10 quarters without scoring a TD. They broke that drought by scoring very late today in what was essentially garbage time. Arizona plays KC and then finishes with 3 division games. I don’t see them coming out of that stretch better than 2-2. If so, they’d finish at 11-5 and the Eagles have a good chance at topping that record. It is important that the Eagles have the better record since Arizona won head-to-head.

The Packers hosted the Patriots and it was a really good game, but unfortunately Aaron Rodgers played like Aaron Rodgers and GB won the game. That means the Packers are also now 9-3. They could easily finish 13-3 or 12-4 so the Eagles will need some serious help to get past them.

Of course the key to all of this is for the Eagles to keep winning games. If they win out, the Eagles have a great shot for the top spot in the NFC. If they go 12-4, things are trickier but they at least would likely be #2. Anything below 12-4 and the Eagles need a lot of help to even get the #2 spot.

This is so different than last year when the Eagles were fighting just to get into the playoffs.

* * * * *

It was fun to see the Giants and Skins lose today because it’s just fun for them to suffer. But that does help their draft position. The question is now whether they waste those picks.

A bit of humor…

Beating Seattle next week is the key to earning a bye. Lose to Seattle and most likely Green Bay and Seattle will get the top two seeds. I think Seattle will run the table if they beat the Eagles. Arizona is fading fast and don’t think they will be a factor for home field. If the Eagles beat Seattle, coupled with an Arizona collapse, they can still get home field with a loss in one of their last three games.

agree with this completely, beat me to it. SEA and DAL games are huge, by then I’m sure they’ll be even more turmoil in NY and DC anyway. We may close out the season against a lame-duck or even interim coach, and colt mccoy (and possible lame-duck coach).
    It’s so very beautiful

  3. 3 Avery Greene said at 9:20 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Yup, focus on winning this week, then worry about anything else. If we can beat a good defense like Seattle at home, we can put some fear in some of the other teams in the NFC. I expect us to be a dog or most analysts to pick the Hawks. So I like the anger it will bring to our players to prove a point.

how do the PAts try a FG down 5 with 2 minutes left? I know it’s 4th and long, but it’s a 47 yard fg (which they missed, so no gimme) and they hadn’t stopped the Packers all game. Belicheat always makes the right decision but I really think that was not playing the odds well.

  8. 8 GEAGLE said at 9:09 PM on November 30th, 2014:

I came to post the same exact thing man… They went for it like a million times, they get in Packer territory, they should have thrown to Gronk 4 times in a row, odds are he gets 10 yards… They went for it to get all the way down there, to settle for a FG that gps,ows ii shanks? Like come on…mthe first time I root for BRADY and they get conservative and play scared? Take a shot, go for it… Instead of shaking a pointless 3, and then gambling that Rogers won’t gain 10 yards?

    Go Bills

  10. 10 GEAGLE said at 9:30 PM on November 30th, 2014:

It’s simple, we either need Marceleus Dareus, Jerry Hughes, Kyle Williams or Ndonkey kong Suh. fairly, Ziggy Ansah, to beat the living crap out of Rogers for 60 minutes…. Lions nor the bills can beat GB in a shoutout, so we need one of those games where the defense just beats down the QB all game and never lets the offense get going, the way the Lins beat GB earlier in the year…

  11. 11 Dragon_Eagle said at 9:07 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Ugh. SNF is looking like its on its way to a blowout. KC failed to show up tonight.

  12. 12 Weapon Y said at 9:25 PM on November 30th, 2014:

  13. 13 GEAGLE said at 9:43 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Next week is going to be a shit show. KC @ arizona
    ..
Pass happy andy, is going to arizona with an offense that hasn’t thrown a TD pass to a WR all year, and a stud RB against Tough cardinals defense, that can stop the run, let alone a run game like andy that won’t invest in getting it going because he is too pass happy to commit to it. Pass happy andy with his No WRs is going to thrown at Cardinals quality secondary, and the cardinals offense is a mess against a tough KC defense,.,

Score is going to be like 9-3

  14. 14 Mitchell said at 9:27 PM on November 30th, 2014:

It’s amazing how Rodgers can carry a whole team though.

  15. 15 GEAGLE said at 9:39 PM on November 30th, 2014:

For me it’s simple. My only Preference is to not go to Lambaau in January. Other than that, I’m really fine with whatever outcome.
    ..
So for me, It’s run the table and finish at 13-3 or bust, and even 13-3 May not be enough. hopefully this is the last time the chip kelly Eagles dont control their own destiny in December, I don’t like having to root for teams to beat GB but this is where we are at…. Need the Eagles to run the table, and other than winning a tough game with seattle. It’s perfectly doable…. BUT GB owns the tie breaker over us, so I need them to lose once and go 12-4…. falcons and Bucs are worthless home or away, so my only hope is the Bills defense just beat Rogers sales for 60 min in Buffalo, or Lions going to Lambeau with the whacky division rival dynamic and manage to surprisingly pummel Rogers the way they did earlier in the year… Alot to ask for ATleast GB is jeckyle and Hyde with home and aw away games…. Probably like the bills chances to completely BEATDOWN dogs in Buffalo, than the lions winning in Lambaeu

If GB wins outright. Will need one of the physical teams that can run the ball and shut down the run like the Niners or seattle to go into LAMBAEU and knock the, off….. Gladly play GB at the linc

  17. 17 GEAGLE said at 9:51 PM on November 30th, 2014:

if FOles comes back, I’ll go to seattle… I don’t want to go their witty Sanchez, is arm doesn’t stand a chance against the LOB..
    ..
We would need FOles throwing some BOMBS to keep them honest….

Can’t wait to play seattle this week, it’s the ultimate test, a solid playoff defense, who is well coached, won’t respect our passing game, so will load up everything to try and stop shady….I’m Curious to see if our healthy OL and shady can be stopped. What better barometer for playoff football? Wanna win in January? Gotta run the ball and stop the run, what better test form that type of NFC jAnuary football than BEASTMODE and the seahawks… You can bet their 1st, 2nd concern will be to stop shady and their 3rd concern will be to stop FOles…..let’s see if the best Guard, the best Center, hall of FAME LT, and top young RT Lane can be stopped…..

I’d bet Beastmode has a harder time getting free than shady does, but we will find out in 6 days

  18. 18 MaggieMagpie said at 11:56 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Can’t agree. We saw what the Seahawks D did to Peyton a few months ago. Foles is the same TYPE of QB. Can’t or won’t move his feet. Can’t or won’t get out of the pocket. Sanchez can move. He also has the offense moving at a fast pace or “high tempo”. As for long or short passes, who cares? As long as somebody, WR or TE or RB catches them and keeps the chains moving. As for Lynch, he doesn’t have to get free, he just drags 6 or 7 guys into the end zone with him. ;~)

  19. 19 Michael Winter Cho said at 10:03 AM on December 1st, 2014:

Incorrect, Foles can move his feet and even throw on the run, he just can’t run for yards.

  22. 22 GEAGLE said at 9:56 PM on November 30th, 2014:

When a team has no desire to trade a young player, the answer to that question would be…”too much”

  23. 23 oreofestar said at 9:56 PM on November 30th, 2014:

ok then, still think Latimer could develop into a solid wr under Chip and he has done absolutely nothing this year in Denver

  24. 24 GEAGLE said at 9:57 PM on November 30th, 2014:

I don’t disagree…problem is GMs don’t look at what a kid does or doesn’t do as a rookie..

  25. 25 oreofestar said at 9:59 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Makes sense I guess, if a team called us up for Smith and offered a 4th or something you would probably say no even though he hasn’t done anything

  26. 26 GEAGLE said at 10:02 PM on November 30th, 2014:

We would say HELL NO!… Figure cody was drafted in the 2nd round, he ismt a bust yet so you would need to pay ATleast what he cost, but the team isnt looking to shop him, so would have to offer more than what they spent on drafting him….and that’s if they are even willing to trade the player. Teams can still be high on plays that done nothing as a rookie… For example, bet chip isn’t interested in trading Taylor Hart, and he hasn’t even dressed a game yet

  27. 27 oreofestar said at 10:03 PM on November 30th, 2014:

not sure if I’d push that far if a team offered the 26th pick in this year’s draft for SMITH the trade may very well go down, if you offer a 2nd for Latimer this year I think Denver does it I just don’t have interest in parting that much

  28. 28 GEAGLE said at 10:56 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Next year will be Riley Coopers last year in Philly, Curious to see the young WR talent we add… Thinking it will be someone in the Cordarell Patterson mold, or a Big Mike Evans/Funchess type who they can groom next year to replace Coopers blocking the following year…I’m assuming Coop is Back for his last year next year, but his role will start to diminish more and more as the young Wr improve

  34. 34 Baloophi said at 12:59 AM on December 1st, 2014:

Having married into an Auburn family, I’ve been watching Sammie Coates for three years. Crazy YPC despite being under-utilized and coupled with some erratic QB play. That said, he is big, fast, catches jump-balls, BLOCKS, and is used to a fast-paced, running offense. He is what Riley Cooper should be. Sign him up! (Another Auburnite to watch: Duke Williams and his insane catch radius and pain tolerance… Boldin-esque).

  35. 35 Mitchell said at 1:56 AM on December 1st, 2014:

I watch him, look at his stats and can’t believe he isn’t used more. He should fall to the second because he has been hurt and as you said under utilized. He also helps child with cancer. You know he is on Chips radar.

  36. 36 Anders said at 2:04 AM on December 1st, 2014:

I really love his potential and he might last to late 2nd or even 3rd

  37. 37 Mitchell said at 2:18 AM on December 1st, 2014:

With his potential I can’t see him past the second. He’s kinda like Beckham last year with everybody having him in The second but being taken in the first

  38. 38 Anders said at 2:49 AM on December 1st, 2014:

Most people had Beckham as a top 20 pick after the combine.

Problem for Coates is he started slow and the overall WR field is strong again with Cooper, Strong, White, Parker, Funchess, Duke Williams, Greene, Agholor and Coates.

I doubt 5 WRs go 1st round again, so more likely that some guys gets pushed down.

I don’t think much of Kapernick but I’m a firm believer in playoff football being about running the ball, and stopping the run, and San Fran is getting the players back to go on a streak of running the ball well, and playing the run tôugh….Kapernick is garbage, but all it takes is one of those games where he goes nuts running all over the place…. Aldon smith is going to knock the rust off soon, Navarow bowman will be back soon, they have youñg linebackers like boreland and Lynch who are balling…love safety Bathea, I had no idea he was still so good…
    ..
I can see them getting the run game going, and shutting down teams run game, with Justin smith, Ray McDonald legal troubles are off his back.. Just think they can go on a streak of doing well in the trenches…Anthony Davis will shake off the concussion soon..could see them rallying, knowing that this is their last hoorah… Veterans know their coach is being fired, and they will be waived…that makes the Niners veterans a dangerous team IMO.. We will get an idea by how they respond in seattle in two weeks. I got San Fran winning that one

  50. 50 GEAGLE said at 10:09 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Giamts screwed up by drafting ODB. As good as he is, he is worthless until you get right in the trenches. They needed to trade up two spots for Lewan or just draft Zack Martin stealing him from the Cowboys.
    ..
Smart team building is spending your first round picks on the OL and Edge rusher, DL…. Once you are set in the trenches then you can afford luxuries like spending the 12th pick on a WR….where the hell where they going wifh a WR, when the OL is trash, and the QB is terrible unless his OL is perfect?

So thankful that all our special team units apply pressure rather than being weak.

  64. 64 GEAGLE said at 10:27 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Never enjoyed special team so much in my life, them boys are some bad mofo’s… Most teams have like 1 or two special teams aces… We have special teams aces who are bavkups and dont even get to play in every game… 1 to 11 we have some bad mofos playing ST… Then you got guys who were never good at ST players who chip turned into ST monsters like Brandn Graham… Go back and look at the monster block he made on Huffs KR TD few weeks ago, he destroyed his man and sprung Huff Free…. I love our special teams, and it feels awesome knowing we can count on them to make an impact every week.

worst case scenario, they win the field position battle for us all game, give us short fields and consistently make opponent go the length of the field, while Parkey is money from FG of course… At the very least we get that advantage almost every single week…. Some weeks, they provide so much more, like putting points on the board, causing turnovers…l just a beastly unit. I don’t know if I ever recall seeing a coach weaponize his special team to the point Chip and Fipp have…and imagine how scary it will be next year, and the year after when they build on it….

ST was carrying us early in the year when we had issues learning to overcome bad injuries…nice knowing that now, our special teams won’t have to bail us out. Offense and defense are healthy, ready to do their things, and Special team can Add to the assualt, instead of having to carry us…

You Know Maragos, and his special teams brothers are going to be jacked up to show the seahawks what they lost!!!

Whats interesting is all season, we haven’t seen chip whip out any trick plays at all. Last year we would line up Brad at QB, try the swinging gate, run reverses…. This year we haven’t attempted anything at all. Not an outsid kick, nothing,,,we haven’t put anything on film, wonder if chip has us working on a player or two to have it in our back pocket in case we need a spark

I also think chip respects his rivalry with the great Pete Carroll to where this has to be one of the weeks we whip out something special for the occasion,.someting we haven’t put on film yet…maybe 3 back pistol with POLK, Huff and Shady all lined up in the backfield, or a lot of Sproles ans shady together….. whatever it is, I’m sure he shows a new wrinkle that we haven’t seen yet, for the occasion.

Wonder how Cody Parkey is at onside kicks and fakes?

I’d be hype to see 3back Pistol, Burton, Huff, blocking for Sproles….can fake hand off to sproles and pitch it to Huff…play action fake or double play action fake send all 3 out from the back field as pass catchers,…we got our OL back, get jiggy with it, and whip something out…Burton and Huff can probably lead block for Sproles or shady lol…..ATleast put Polk and Shady in the same backfield. You can’t tell me that polk cant lead block for shady once or twice..
    ..
Soon, we will need to dust Ertz off, because defenses will be tougher and we need an extra weapon in the passing game,..defenses will have forgotten about him, whip him out when we need a big play

should Eagles Draft Louisville Safety Gerod Holliman? 6’0 205lbs, just tied NCAA record with his 14th INT this year…that’s RIGHT, that’s not a mistake..14 INTs in a college season playing safety, played CB two years ago so has the man to man cover skills Billy Davis requires in a Safety….. future Eagles?

LSU Jalen Collins 6’2 200lb CB who is also a good candidate for billy Davis converting to safety the way he did with Antrel Rolle, and then went after Malcolm Jenkins,,
    ..
doubt we can pick high enough to get Landon Collins

  78. 78 GEAGLE said at 11:17 PM on November 30th, 2014:

carter is a CB, and I think he will be towards the top of the Eagle CB wish list

  79. 79 oreofestar said at 11:19 PM on November 30th, 2014:

I know he’s a CB but I wouldn’t be surprised if we tried to convert him to safety

  80. 80 GEAGLE said at 11:24 PM on November 30th, 2014:

Maybe… I do like him enough to keep him at corner, where as LSU corner Jaylen Collins, I wouldn’t want him as a corner but I would Love him at safety. Seeing Amari Cooper torch his man coverage makes me want him at aafety….where as I actually think Carter can play corner in the NFL and I want my outside Cb to be ATleast 200lbs, he fits the bill….. Deal with another annoying stanford graduation rule Tho..

Yeah I like those guys been looking into Waynes recently don’t like him as much as I hoped I would and gotta keep watching these FSU clowns

I can’t watch FSU without being fixated on Jalen Ramsey

I think Rowe from Utah a kid playing corner this year but was a safety the past 3 years there is an ideal target for Silly Davis. Also supposedly 6’1.

Don’t care who you are or where you play. If you get 14 ints, it makes you a playmaker. We need playmakers. Draft him.

Sorry. I didn’t add bad coaching into the equation.

  88. 88 D3FB said at 12:28 PM on December 1st, 2014:

He put up 13 ints his sophomore year. His junior year was his big regression year. Teams actually did more study on him and realized he got so many picks because he was just jumping everything. His first game junior year he gave up like 300 yards to Tennessee. When looking at a players ability to get INT’s it’s better to look for consistency than one year massive outliers.

  89. 89 Mitchell said at 1:19 PM on December 1st, 2014:

Leave it to the Redskins to draft him in the second…. What is your take on Ed Reynolds takeaways? I look at things like, “if they did it once, they can do it again,” but I see your point.

  90. 90 D3FB said at 3:21 PM on December 1st, 2014:

I’m not a Reynolds fan. I didn’t like that pick or the Watkins pick. Watkins I can live with because he’s versatile, and super athletic. Reynolds just never did anything to make me sit up and pay attention. To me his ceiling is somewhere between a 3rd safety and Nate Allen, but it will take a couple years to get there. I just felt like from a fifth round pick there were players with higher ceilings if you were going to take a project, and players who could be solid contributors immediately. Reynolds was kind of a guy who is a project with contributor ceiling.

  91. 91 Mitchell said at 4:55 PM on December 1st, 2014:

He’s got the playmaking history but suffers from it coming in one year. Who would you have taken in the 4th and 5th besides Watkins and Reynolds. I actually like Reynolds a bit and hope he can be a slightly better Nate but we’ll see.

Damn, really disapointed about the GB game. Do not want to go over there in playoffs. Really excited about this Seattle game. Just as much as the Dallas game.

So there are two things keeping us from the #1 seed; our game vs. Seattle next Sunday and Green Bay @ Buffalo.

I don’t think either will go our way, but we’ll see.

  99. 99 truehaynes said at 5:54 AM on December 1st, 2014:

No way we get the number one seed at this point. Unless Rodgers gets hurt. I can’t see the packers losing another take this year, and I don’t see us beating seattle. If we manage to beat Seattle Im also worried about how that would effect the Dallas game. I would expect a letdown after beating the mighty hawks. Plus I can’t see the cowboys not throwing to dez 20 times in the rematch. They know we can stop there running attack, and I doubt they will be stupid enough to run into our brick wall over and over again like last game. I don’t trust our secondary against them if they decide to play us like green bay did
Also screens to dez would be very effective against our soft corners. IDC what people say Cary Williams reminds me of DRC when he tackles. He might play hard but he is soft and will get ragdolled by dez consistently. Our best bet it getting the number 2 seed and hoping GB loses in the divisional to a strong wildcard team. If we have to go to green bay again I think we need to play cover zero and blitz the hell out of Rodgers. If we sit back he kills us. At least play aggrsive and try to take him out of the game. If we decide to sit back again at least put barwin out of nelson and have him jam him at the line like we did down the stretch last year. I am also very excited about Sanchez and his effect on the running game. The read option is built on making the read defender chose, and with foles they always bit on McCoy but he never seemed to keep it. The threat of Sanchez getting 10 easy yards will force them to respect him, which takes a defender out of the play. If they bring a safety down to counter that throw pop passes to celek or jailbreak screens to maclin and sproles. I trust chip, but I never want to see us play so conservatily and scared like we did against GB the first time. Were built to be aggressive on both sides of the ball, so i don’t understand why we got away from that. Sorry for the ramblings. Fly eagles fly

Eagles open up as a 1 point favorite against the Seahawks.

  101. 101 kujo76 said at 8:26 AM on December 1st, 2014:

The best chance the Eagles have of hosting the championship game is to win out and have Seattle grab the 6th seed, since the Seahawks are the only team with a plausible shot at beating the Packers at Lambeau in the division round.

  102. 102 A_T_G said at 8:37 AM on December 1st, 2014:

Seeing a likely path to the Lombardi is difficult because there are at least three teams that are clearly better than us – GB, NE, Denver. I keep reminding myself, though, that in 2004 we clearly were the best team. Anything can happen in the playoffs.

  103. 103 Cafone said at 12:17 PM on December 1st, 2014:

The Saints win was bad for the Eagles too. I was hoping they would get knocked out of the playoff race. Don’t look at their record, look at their QB. The Eagles don’t have the secondary to beat great QBs and if they meet the Saints in the playoffs it will most likely be a loss.
