Eagles Get Maclin, Jr (aka Nelson Agholor)

Posted: April 30th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 380 Comments »

The Eagles couldn’t re-sign WR Jeremy Maclin so they did the next best thing…they drafted a prospect who looked just like him, USC’s Nelson Agholor.

He is 6-0, 198. Runs 4.42 in the 40.  Check out the highlights.

Agholor is a good fit for the Eagles offense. He has the speed to be a deep threat, but also has terrific RAC skills. The WR corps had some talent, but needed someone with top speed and RAC skills. Agholor comes from a pro style offense so he will be more advanced than some other WRs and that could help him to challenge for starting time right away.

Good pick.

If you are going to have Sam Bradford as your QB, you need to give him weapons.

  5. 5 Alistair Middlemiss said at 10:31 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Dupree is not a need if you are happy with MSII still. If you have them at the same grade you take the player you need i guess.

WR is one of the toughest positions to accurately predict, but for some odd reason, I truly feel like Agholar is a ‘safe’ pick. And I mean safe in a good way. I think we’ll see immediate production – equal if not better than Jordan Matthews’ rookie season.

  13. 13 ICDogg said at 10:31 PM on April 30th, 2015:

In 2013, USC’s star playmaker, Marqise Lee struggled with multiple injuries and Agholor stepped up. The sophomore receiver totaled 56 receptions and 918 yards. Come 2014, Agholor saw his numbers explode. He doubled his 2013 touchdown total (up to 12 in 2014), and nearly did the same with his receptions. As an NFL prospect, this player has a number of translatable traits you look for when scouting the position. While listed at just 6’1 and 190 pounds, Agholor plays outside of his frame. This is most evident when he has the ball in his hands. Agholor is a man possessed, stays strong and keeps balance when defenders try to tackle him. It usually takes more than one to do so. Agholor also plays big in his routes, and at the catch point. At breaks and stems mid-route, Agholor is extremely quick—one of the best route runners in this class. Some criticize him for making catches away from his body, but he nearly always wins those balls. He can snare a pass, and bring it down within his frame at breakneck speed—an advanced timing player. The junior wideout could do a better job absorbing the ball, and does get too aggressive in the open field. Time with NFL veterans could help him slow the game down, just a bit. Overall, this is a strong wide receiver prospect with the ability to become a complete player at the position. There’s a solid argument that Agholor is one of the four or five best receivers in this draft.

  14. 14 Insomniac said at 10:32 PM on April 30th, 2015:

The thing is with Agholor is that he’s just ok in some areas and only just good in others. Sure he’ll probably have better immediate impact but I don’t see him as a game dominating player (sounds just like Maclin).

  39. 39 ICDogg said at 10:37 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Nelson Agholor was born in Nigeria, but moved to America at a young age, and became a multiple position player in preparatory school (WR, RB, DB). He was named a five-star recruit, and highly sought after by several schools. Agholor does not have any widely known character questions, and has never been in trouble off the field. He appears to be very clean in this regard. On the field, his football character appears to be pristine, as well. Agholor always gives one hundred percent on every down. The intensity, and will, he displays when running after the catch is a testament to his drive and mental toughness. Agholor is known as a vocal leader on the team, and a true grinder when it comes to his preparation. No injury red flags, and played through a rib injury in 2013.

  40. 40 Mitchell said at 10:38 PM on April 30th, 2015:

We still probably could nab another WR in this draft. I’m still ready to put my Coates on Chipper.

  41. 41 ICDogg said at 10:38 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Agholor’s athleticism is best displayed in his quick twitch movements, and ability to weave through lanes. On more than one occasion, USC would dial up a screen pass for Agholor; he would catch it and would cut against the grain. In doing so, he would create lanes for himself and put defenders on their heels. Players cannot do that without very strong athleticism. While a good amount of his ability to create after the catch is due to will and desire, Agholor does have an athletic advantage too. He displays good balance, and is very hard to knock off his path. Its hard to say that Agholor wins after the catch with flexibility or coordination, but he is no slouch in those departments, either. The one concern with Agholor is his lean frame. His body type has the appearance of a traditional NFL slot receiver, rather than someone who can win outside. Considering the aggression he plays with, Agholor will also open himself up to plenty of big hits. His other attributes should make him more than capable enough to be more than just a slot player, but how he holds up to punishment in the pros is a question.

  42. 42 unhinged said at 10:42 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Your description brings Beckham to mind. Agholor is not as freakishly athletic, but the hands, the RAC, the quick twitch are similar.

As far as the cops are concerned. His arrest will put him into league’s testing program where he could be punished for a positive test.

  52. 52 ICDogg said at 10:40 PM on April 30th, 2015:

As mentioned, Nelson Agholor is a fiend in the run after the catch department. He gets the ball in his hands, and immediately looks to turn up field. He engages defenders, and despite a smaller frame, it often takes more than one man to drag him down. Agholor usually eludes the defender, unless that player executes a perfect form tackle. His wiggle is a strength, and he is comfortable using a multitude of moves (juke, stiffarm, spin, etc.). Agholor shows a unique ability to maintain control when moving laterally. There were multiple times, against Arizona State, where USC’s star wide receiver cut against the grain to turn certain losses into first down gains, and more. His balance and strength allow him to freelance, while maintaining control of his lateral running path. Agholor’s quickness and acceleration will both be above average NFL standards the day he steps into the league. His long speed, however, will not be quite so transcendent amongst his peers. Agholor’s playing speed is not a liability, but grades out to just a “solid NFL skill”.

  53. 53 mksp said at 10:40 PM on April 30th, 2015:

This draft is gonna end up like the 2013 draft. A lot of smart, solid picks with good value.

  54. 54 ICDogg said at 10:41 PM on April 30th, 2015:

Concerns about Nelson Agholor’s hands are greatly overstated. While there were flashes of drop concerns in 2013, he improved tremendously in regards to limiting those in 2014. A keen eye reveals that this player actually has very strong hands. Agholor extends his hands, and rarely lets passes get into his body. What troubles some observers is just how often, and sometimes needlessly, he does this. However, Agholor pulls it off on a regular basis, and does so with consistency on a per attempt scale. He brings these catches in by timing his hands with incredible proficiency, and displaying excellent technique. He also wastes no time in snaring the pass, and bringing it down his side. Agholor checks all the boxes when it comes to an above baseline level of highpointing and body control. While he is not off the charts in any of these sectors, these attributes should translate well to the professional game. Even without an ideal frame, Agholor has no issues with physical play, both in traffic and mid-route. This was an issue that haunted his former teammate, Marqise Lee.

  64. 64 Iskar36 said at 10:42 PM on April 30th, 2015:

I don’t have a significant issue with the pick itself, but I definitely question the offseason strategy. No question Maclin got over payed, but what we effectively did as a result was we “paid” a 1st round pick instead of a couple mil extra in salary. Had we went ahead and paid Maclin, we would have taken a hit salary wise, but we would have a 1st round pick to use elsewhere (or even on Nelson still, but now to pair wth Maclin, rather than replace)

  65. 65 Anders said at 10:42 PM on April 30th, 2015:

  71. 71 ICDogg said at 10:42 PM on April 30th, 2015:

As a route runner, Nelson Agholor is at, or near the top, of this year’s wide receiver crop. His precision, and execution mid-route while attempting to separate from defenders is remarkable. The foot frequency he uses at the stems and break points of routes, help him fire away from defenders at crucial points. This incredible quickness caused him to separate with ease in college, but its fair to wonder if he lacks the natural speed to do this as frequently in the NFL. Agholor has no trouble releasing from the line of scrimmage. His reps against physical press coverage were limited in the Pac 12, but he did best most corners when they tried. Agholor has a quick jump cut move, and does not mind using his hands to engage in the battle with a corner. While Agholor shows the aggression and high-effort you like to see in a receiver when blocking, a lack of functional strength makes it tough for him to finish. He won’t sustain blocks for too long. All in all, Agholor is pretty advanced in his receiving technique, for a college prospect, especially as a route runner.

Nelson is all around better then Dorsett besides the deep ball. You in an earlier comment regarding Maclin alluded to the system making players open. So you really don’t need a true deep guy, because the system will get them open. What you need is a more all around guy, such as Agholor.

Best route runner coming out of college, extremely strong hands and rated as one of the most if not most Pro ready WR in the draft. Very good RAC ability hence the PR skills. Is a very quick twitch athlete. Your analysis is wrong. To say you have to be great at something in the NFL to be good is ridiculous.

What is Jordan Mathews so.spectacular at? He had a great rookie season.

Nelson has the potential to be better then Mathews.

However I will say this again, just so you can.understand. He is a great route runner. That’s a big deal in the NFL.

JLC gets things wrong but on this one he was just confused by the backup. He heard NE had made their pick and thought they moved up but all 3 from 30-32 had been submitted.

While I admit that I initially thought Agholor was just a bit of a reach, I’m just starting to grow on him. Like the others have said, this guy’s a solid pick; he has size, speed, and skill with good RAC ability. Some are comparing him favorably to Maclin, but I look at him more like a hybrid mix of Maclin and Randall Cobb. Imagine Chip Kelly utilizing this dude in the flat or crossing routes from the backfield, or even on the outside as a vertical threat. This could potentially let Matthews and Huff get more targets.

Now I’m looking forward to the 2nd and 3rd round…

ROTO: ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports the agent for Zach Mettenberger wants his client traded out of Tennessee.
Mettenberger’s agent — Joe Linta — obviously sees his client as a starter in the NFL, and Mettenberger is likely not going to be Tennessee’s starter after the team drafted Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 overall pick. Mettenberger should have trade value, though not necessarily much. He was a sixth-round pick in last year’s draft, lacks mobility, and has erratic ball placement.

Was re-told Bradford was not included in any #Eagles offers, despite reports.

I am going to guess if we don’t trade anyone this offseason, then it will be reported that in fact, the Eagles never offered any players ever and no one was ever on the trading block.

Like someone said on 24/7, checking out the asking price is not the same as making an offer.

Amazing that Gil Brandt called this pick two months ago. Put the name in an envelope and sent it to this guy.

That’s banana pants. Wonder if Gil had an inside source or was just that keyed in.

  358. 358 ICDogg said at 1:02 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Some scouts loved him, others not so much. I don’t remember him being mocked to the Eagles but I saw some mocks where he went before the Eagles and others where he wasn’t even in the first round.

  359. 359 D3FB said at 1:11 AM on May 1st, 2015:

I’m betting that a young Eagles scout knew the team had Agholor higher than he was hearing from other teams and put 2 and 2 together to show off for a well respected elder in the scouting community.

You know what makes a good drafting GM? I just realized–don’t fuck up in talent rich years. The fireman in ’11. Or Ponder… It gets really easy in talent unrich years.

Who would you rather have? Brandon Cooks–the guy that made Mannion look good, or Agholor? Same pick area.

  361. 361 Mitchell said at 12:29 AM on May 1st, 2015:

    Agholor.

  362. 362 shah8 said at 12:29 AM on May 1st, 2015:

why, specifically? Can’t be because of stats…

  363. 363 Mitchell said at 12:33 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Well, let me ask you this, what do you get with Cooks? Some deep speed? Does he have great RAC ability? I know Agholor is tough as shit. You can see it when he plays. I think Cooks crumbles under contact. Cooks is also smaller not just from a size standpoint but from a physicality standpoint.

  364. 364 Insomniac said at 12:35 AM on May 1st, 2015:

    Cooks crumbles under contact? What.

  365. 365 BlindChow said at 12:36 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Hey that’s just the way Cooks crumbles.

  366. 366 Mitchell said at 12:39 AM on May 1st, 2015:

He is small yes? You can see the competition in Agholor it’s on another level. Agholor will take the contact, Cooks will avoid it. He has to be clean to get Rac.I said that poorly. You can just tell Agholor loves the game/competition.

  367. 367 SteveH said at 12:36 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Cooks was no slouch his rookie year and the Eagles were hot for him last year at pick 24, so they must have valued him similarly to Agholor.

Lets let Agholor play a few games before we start rattling off all the great things he does.

  368. 368 Mitchell said at 12:39 AM on May 1st, 2015:

I was just saying what I like from the tape I watched.

  369. 369 MagsJonesingOHNO said at 1:39 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Agholor is Maclin, only 5 years younger, cheaper and apparently can also play both inside and outside. He also is an STer. He’s not my first choice either, but just try to get any 3 people here to agree on who else should be the first pick. Good thing it’s Chip’s job, not ours.

  370. 370 ICDogg said at 12:59 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Cooks, but it’s a whole different prototype. Chip wants his receivers to be more physical, fight for the ball, and for extra yards, and throw blocks when called for. Being able to separate vertically is less of a priority for him.

  371. 371 OregonDucker said at 10:20 AM on May 1st, 2015:

    You nailed it ICDogg.

  372. 372 Greg Richards said at 6:12 AM on May 1st, 2015:

2011 had an awesome top 15. After that, the talent level fell off a cliff.

  373. 373 Flyin said at 12:51 AM on May 1st, 2015:

After watching his highlight and draft videos on the field, then watching and listening to his combine interview and call in to the Eagles… I like this guy.

  375. 375 ICDogg said at 1:24 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Surprised at a few of the names still available. Jaelen Strong… what happened with him?

  376. 376 Anders said at 4:24 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Inconsistent tape, tho I still like him more than Agholor or Perriman

  377. 377 Mitchell said at 9:25 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Idk. I liked him more than many.

  378. 378 ICDogg said at 1:26 AM on May 1st, 2015:

Lots of effusive praise for Agholor on ESPN and on NFLN. They love the way that he likes to work in traffic and “do the dirty work” and loves to block and isn’t shy of contact, they love him as a red zone target especially.

    FYI. Another USC wideout.

Matt Barkley Tweets “philly, you are going to love this guy”….
    ..
Josh huff better quit all his hobbies, because he is sorroundrd by talented young workhorses now in the WR room. Pope and Agholor are going to really thrive off each other’s work ethic. Should be some healthy, United competition between the two young WR”s… Huff better bring the insane work ethic(not saying he doesnt) because these two will make him look bad with the way they work… Excited for the weapons we are putting around the comeback player of the year, Sam Bradford….

Time to get fisher, Grasu, Ali Marpet, Daryl Williams , I’ll take Lael Collins in round 2 gladly…I’d take Eli Harold in RD 2…Bryce Petty. Gotta build the OL, and then get a versatile DB with CB and Safety experience
