Mountain or a Mole Hill?

Sam Bradford will be a spectator when the Eagles play their preseason opener on Sunday. Chip Kelly announced on Friday that Bradford will sit out the Colts game. Kelly said Bradford was disappointed but understood the coach’s decision.

Is this a big deal or not?

https://twitter.com/JimmyKempski/status/632250688542785538

Differing opinions from a couple of very good Eagles writers.

I lean more toward Jeff McLane’s thinking. Kelly has never come out and said Bradford would absolutely play this week. Kelly has talked all along about the Eagles being smart with Bradford. And so far the moves have worked well. They eased him along in the spring. Bradford didn’t do 11-on-11’s until the summer. He looks comfortable on the field and isn’t wearing a brace. Bradford is playing well and earning rave reviews from everyone who watches him.

Would playing on Sunday substantially help Bradford in any way? No. The starters are on the field for one, maybe two series. That’s it. They generally shake off the rust and then get off the field. The first preseason game is more about the third and fourth stringers than anyone.

There is a huge X-factor…the offensive line. Allen Barbre will be at LG and Andrew Gardner (we think) at RG. The configuration of Peters-Barbre-Kelce-Gardner-Johnson has never started a game together, whether regular or preseason. Do you want the QB coming off a torn ACL out there behind this group as they take their first snaps together?

As a point of reference, last year the starting OL struggled in the opener. Jason Peters had a holding penalty. Evan Mathis had two of them. Jason Kelce got driven back into Nick Foles. Allen Barbre struggled in pass protection. Most of that group knew each other very well. They just had an off night.

The Ravens and Eagles will practice together this week. Bradford will have a chance to go against another defense in a controlled setting. The OL will have a few snaps under their belt. This can serve the same purpose as playing in the preseason opener, but with less risk.

I do agree with McLane that if Kelly pulls Bradford out of next week’s game, that changes things. Then you have to question the coach’s confidence in his QB. For now, he’s playing it safe. There is very little to gain and plenty to lose so why push your luck?

* * * * *

Is Sam Bradford 100 percent? This is an argument that gets into semantics. Kelly and Bradford can say he’s 100 percent healthy without lying. His knee is functional. The torn ligament has been repaired.

That is different than being 100 percent in-shape and ready to go. Clearly Bradford isn’t either of those. He needs to run around on the field at full speed and against live tacklers to show that he’s truly all the way back. You aren’t going to see that in his first game. If we’re lucky, that will happen in the third preseason game, when Bradford and the starters will play significant snaps.

* * * * *

Mark Sanchez will start, but won’t play all that much. Most of the opener will be Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow battling for the number three QB job.

Last year Barkley was 7 for 16 for 73 yards in the opener. He’ll see plenty of time with the backup offense in the game so he needs to post better numbers than that.

Barkley is the better passer. Tebow is the better player. And much more experienced. It will be interesting to see which guy can take advantage of the opportunity.

I don’t really care which guy wins the battle. I just hope it comes down to one of them playing better than the other and not the coaches being forced to choose the guy who was less awful. Preseason football isn’t always a pretty sight.

* * * * *

Big news on Zach Ertz today. He is out for the preseason with a “core muscle injury”. Kelly said he would be back for the season opener. Some people were skeptical of that timetable. It looks like the Eagles got lucky. This isn’t a sports hernia. It is similar, but a lesser injury.

It would have been good to see Ertz in the preseason. I wanted to get a better feel for his blocking and how much it has improved.

who plays more games? Foles or Bradford

I’ll put my money on Bradford, holding onto the ball too long + a line with more holes than a collinder is a recipe for disaster

Tyler Lockett is killing the Broncos. A 46-yard KR followed up by a 103-yard KR for a TD. Even Chip brought the guy in for a visit. You know if Chip is actually considering drafting a 5-10, 182 pound WR then the guy must be special.

I think Huff may be able to be that for us on PR or KR, more of a physical style though. Lockett does it by not being touched, Huff will do it by pure speed and breaking tackles.

My main takeaway from watching non-Eagle preseason games is an appreciation for the level of play the NFL puts out normally. The beginning of the SEA-DEN game looked like actual football, the rest of what I saw was almost unwatchable, even for a football-starved fan. A lot of those backups are really bad.

Of course, when it is our 70-90 roster spots on the field, I will be glued to the screen.

  13. 13 xmbk said at 7:38 AM on August 15th, 2015:

A lot of that is playcalling, too. Most coaches are designing plays to challenge players, rather than working to the teams strengths.

  14. 14 Ark87 said at 10:55 AM on August 15th, 2015:

The Seahawks have a tendency of doing that. I had the same feeling watching them play the season openner against Green Bay like, oh yes football is back, then the rest of week 1 happened…

  15. 15 A_T_G said at 11:44 PM on August 14th, 2015:

My reaction to Bradford is more one of disappointment than worry. I was looking forward to him putting all doubts to rest, going 8-8 and a touchdown before doing backflips over to the bench and snatching the clipboard from Sanchez’s hands.

  18. 18 A_T_G said at 10:12 AM on August 15th, 2015:

I was only giving him one drive. The stat line doesn’t show that the first 7 passes also went for touchdowns, but the officials incorrectly whistled the play dead.

  19. 19 GEAGLE said at 9:33 AM on August 15th, 2015:

So we have to wait 6 extra days to see Bradford… We’ll live..

  20. 20 A_T_G said at 10:02 AM on August 15th, 2015:

    Exactly.

  21. 21 Ark87 said at 11:47 PM on August 14th, 2015:

Hmm, since Jimmy is only saying Bradford is likely being held out because he still isn’t 100% as opposed to Sam looks so good who needs snaps as Kelly suggested, I’ll have to side with Jimmy on this one.

To counter some points, the argument that there is little to be gained on 1 to 2 drives also means there is minimal risk, the least risky of any of the preseason game. Also the value wouldn’t be in the quantity of snaps experience, but getting some things on film to work on for the up coming week of camp. Back to the point: Next week there will be more snaps and a monstrous pass rush to face, and just incredibly higher risk. When you ask what will be gained in an extra week to face these greater risks next week? Gotta be fair on this, this is a caution being taken to make sure Bradford is as ready as possible before he takes the field, and Kelly doesn’t think he’s there yet, whether that’s health or otherwise.

I’m not saying everyone should panic, or even that this is a deviation of Chip’s schedule, or that Chip is making a bad choice, but lets not shut our eyes and cover our ears on this one.

I think what we want to see is some movement around and out of the pocket. It’s great that he can make good throws without moving much, but he won’t always be able to do that.

  24. 24 Greg Tulino said at 12:03 AM on August 15th, 2015:

I think Bradford from a talent perspective, thru his rehab, OTA’s, mini camps and through 2 weeks of training sessions is exactly what Chip, Pat, and the rest of the eagles organization hoped he would be. Accurate, smart, a leader, and quick decision maker. So why even question Chip’s decision to hold him out for 6 more days. If Chip and Eagles staff is right, and Bradford stays healthy then he could be our franchise QB for the next 6 years or so. In our system his upside is still that high. I am completely onboard with holding him out for 6 more days. The only thing that counts is that he is ready , confident , healthy and prepared for MNF one month from now.

  25. 25 76mustang said at 9:40 AM on August 15th, 2015:

All the beat reporters have been commenting on Bradford’s arm talent being the best they’ve seen in the Eagles organization in a long time. I agree with sitting him out this first go around, especially with the OL still in flux. Much ado about nothing.

  26. 26 wee2424 said at 12:17 AM on August 15th, 2015:

Eli and the Giants looked horrible against the Bengals 1st and 2nd string. Dalton quickly toasted the Giants D for a TD. Landon Collins has a knee injury and their other rookie safety tore his Achilles. For years now the Giants have been a walking injury report and it’s not showing signs of slowing.

Being the most injured team for a year or two you may be able to chalk it up to bad luck, but it’s been longer then that. They really need to take a look at how they care for their players.

  33. 33 OldDocNewSeason said at 6:46 AM on August 15th, 2015:

They asked Bradford and he basically said he got injured when he was wearing one so he didn’t really see the point.

  34. 34 phillychuck said at 8:53 AM on August 15th, 2015:

That’s the equivalent to someone saying, “I know someone who was killed in a car crash wearing a seatbelt so I’m not wearing one.” Someone on the Eagles’ training staff has to be smart enough to point out the logical flaw in Bradford’s thinking to him.

  35. 35 OldDocNewSeason said at 9:03 AM on August 15th, 2015:

I don’t entirely disagree, although the statistics on effectiveness of those knee braces once the ligament has healed may not be compelling

  36. 36 BlindChow said at 1:20 PM on August 15th, 2015:

I think the stats on knee brace effectiveness aren’t exactly as cut-and-dry as those on seatbelt effectiveness… Your analogy isn’t apples to apples.

  37. 37 GEAGLE said at 9:46 AM on August 15th, 2015:

  39. 39 HazletonEagle said at 11:51 AM on August 15th, 2015:

Its a debate in the medical field, and there is no clear cut answer. There is some evidence supporting braces, and just as much evidence saying braces are not effective for ACL prevention. So, it probably makes the most sense to let patient comfort become the deciding factor.
I have a bunch of studies supporting each side.
With no clear cut correct answer, it makes more sense to just let patient comfort become the deciding factor.

There are so many players to watch in Sunday’s first half, that it simplifies my mental compartmentalization to not focus on Bradford. With Ertz out, I want to see if Tomlinson looks ready for the NFL; with the logjam at WR, I want to see if either Baily or Pratt are seizing their opportunities; I’m curious to see how Moffitt stands up against his opponent. I’m gong to be very focused on Eagles QB: Does Sanchez look more relaxed? Does Barkley look more intense? Does Tebow look improved as a passer? And on defense, will I get to see Hicks, Rowe and Thurmond flying around on the field at the same time? And which of them will stand out? I can wait a week to obsess over Bradford’s first live action.

You certainly can’t use a 5’10 corner to play Press against those WRs.. The corner would get thrown out of bounds as soon as the ball is snapped..

The Eagles already get a ton of reps, albeit not against opposing team defenses.

With the rate that players get injured even in the preseason, I wouldn’t be against playing our best players only a game or two.

I think sitting Bradford this game is smart. I’d also sit our other guys that we pay over $5M/yr or thereabouts.

I recognize the merit of having game action under your belt. The Eagles don’t do anything groundbreaking though. The purpose of the offense is to make everything simple for the players so they can perform at peak level without having to think too much. Each player has one or two roles to fill. Do your job, nothing more.

I say get the rookies and 2nd teamers out there because they have less game experience already throughout their careers.

If Bradford Wasnt healthy like Kempski claims, you can bet chip WOULDNT have had Bradford dominate most of the first team reps since the beginning of camp… If the coaches were still waiting for him to be “Healthy”, im sure Sanchez would have gotten close to the 50/50 split he expected to get since they were supposed to be competing,,
    ,,
You can’t say SAM is being held out because he isn’t healthy, if SAM is going to play 6 days later in game two….. Get real
    ..
The season is 3 weeks away, If SAM Wasnt healthy, we would be seeing Sanchez get more work with the ones…
    ..
tomorrow Sanchez is going to play a series, maybe two…. If we were still concerned about Sam’s health I would think we would take advantage of Bradford not playing and give Sanchez extra reps since he hasn’t played with the ONE’S much since Bradford was DEEMED COMPLETELY HEALTHY by Coaches and Bradford at the beginning of Camp… Heck, SAM Bradford has even kept the ball and ran with it in Training camp,.. You are High if you think SAM would run from the pocket even with a red jersey on if he wasn’t healthy yet…
    ..
it’s not uncommon for QBs and important players to get held out of the 1st game… Now If Bradford is held out of Game 2, THEN ITS TIME TO WORRY! Then I can easier buy the “he isn’t healthy yet” Crap…. But you can’t say Bradford ISNT healthy so he won’t olay tomorrow if he is going to play 6 games Later… The EAGLES Would NEVER NEVER NEVER risk such an important player in a meaningless game if he weren’t healthy and ready to take the training wheels off…. When SAM plays next Saturday, what’s kempski going to say?
    ..
This city is really getting worse and worse each year… We have reached the point that if an eagle move DOESNT fully cater to fans instant gratification, we go from zero to full blown Doom n Gloom in 3 seconds… WTF is wrong people.. How have we become such Bitches? People are ripping chip cuz Kiko won’t play in a meaningless game, like are you kidding? How do you complain that an ILB one of the most physical positions got a concussion?
    .
It’s really at an all time low… If Every single bit of Eagles news and devision doesn’t cater to our instant Gratificantion we go completely doom n Gloom and It’s pathetic. I never seen such a soft, pussy fan base… and this is not aimed at IgglesBlitz community… I do NOT feel that this site is an accurate representation of Eagles Nation… This community is a more educated. More rational Outlier.. The conversations we have here ARENT an accurate representation of Eagles fanbase…

There are so many important story lines to follow tomorrow, I don’t get why fans and media are acting like Brats because they have to wait an extra 6 days to see him….this is the ultimate high risk, high reward player, is it really the end of the world that we are eliminating some of the high risk by keeping him out of the first meaningless game?
    ..
I want to see the man play as much as anyone, but more then that, I WANT TO SEE HIM GET THRU A SEASON HEALTHY, so how can I complain about our coach wanting to be prudent and give him a week of practice against the Ravens before putting him against live action..
    .
chip should be able to make a decision like this without fans bitching and donkeys like Kempski making silly statements… Chip WANTS WHATS BEST for the EAGLES, so why can’t fans shut their mouths and support our leader?
    ..
Your instant gratification/Entertainment as a fan should NOT be more important then WHATS BEST FOR THE EAGLES and their upcoming season.
    ..
Really don’t want to risk important veterans in the preseason.. jason Perers, Demarco, Demeco, Ryan Mathws, Sproles, Cox, Barwin, BG, Kiko…. Play these guys as many snaps as they need and get them out of the game ASAP!!!…
    ..
Let’s get some good work in tomorrow and come out Of the game healthy…THATS what’s Important

Interesting Stat……. the Seahawks made it to the SUPERBOWL the past two years, and in those two seasons Wilson attempted 407 passes, and 417 passes, which rank as the least pass attempts in the NFL amongst starting QBs,,.. Amazing how quickily trends can change in the NFL… Seems like Only yesterday Andy was being praised for being ahead of the curve in terms of ushering in the pass first era where we saw RBs get devalued..
    ..
Wilson is a very good QB, but when he attempts less passes then anyone it speaks volumes about the team he was sorrounded with..
    ..
Seattle doesn’t have the best OL in the NFL, yet they were able to run the ball so well that they were able to ask so little of Wilson….our stable of RBs should be as good as ANYONEs, we have more ELITE Talent on our OL then most teams have….If Our Defense improves as much as I think, cut down on X plays, and do a better job getting off the field on 3rd and Long, we should be a very tough team to beat…. If we can put Bradford in a position similar to Wilson we have a chance to be really good…
    ..
Hopefully we stay Healthy, win a playoff game, and come back for the 2016 season considered a contender…

The Eagles are already a contender with a healthy Bradford and Kiko. This team is looking very, very familiar to me. Maybe we will see a little magic tomorrow or maybe just a tease until Sam is in.

  72. 72 BobSmith77 said at 11:27 AM on August 15th, 2015:

Seahawks’ defense especially 2 years ago was one of the best in NFL history.

This defense has had one of the historically worst pass defenses the past 2 years.

I’d be happy if this defense doesn’t turn into the sieve it has been the last 2 years and the Eagles have to score at least 28 pts or more to even have a good shot at winning a game.

  73. 73 PerfectTrader777 said at 12:45 PM on August 15th, 2015:

Seahawks starting to spend more money on Offense which means their defense will suffer at least somewhat in the coming seasons. They may have to let some of their better players go to FA too.

Also, Marshawn Lynch is probably a first ballot HOFer imo.

The core of this team is defense and they are locked up through atleast 2017: Kam, Sherman, Avril, Wagner, Thomas.

I would easily take our Front 7 over Seattles…. Only front 7’s I would consider trading ours for are the Bills, possibly the Rams and Jets…. But I don’t even know if I would be comfortable trading our entire front 7 for theirs… As awesome as the Rams DL is, we have a BIG ADVANTAGE over the Rams at Linebacker, I can probably say the same thing about the bIlls..
    ..
At Full strength, our Front 7 is NO JOKE!…
    ..
Very excited about this defense, my biggest fears are Depth related… Can’t afford injuries to Barwin, Jenkins,BG…

  78. 78 GEAGLE said at 1:31 PM on August 15th, 2015:

Actually…this defense isnt at all far away from the personell you will see when we have an Elite Defense once again… Whenever you see a top 10 philly defense it will be made up of 95% of the players already on this roster.. Believe it or Not!… Our defense last year was better then Most think..
    ..
last year we boasted an ELITE run defense, and an ELITE pass rushing defense behind only the great bills defense in Sacks… We were a very good first and second down defense and on 3rd down we would blow all the great work we did on 1st and 2nd down…. But when we blew 3rd and Lomg opportunities, guess who’s fault it was about 90% of the time? Bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams and nate Allen!!! Guess who is no longer here? bradley Fletcher, Cary Williams and Nate Allen…
    ..
I don’t expect you to be high on Nolan Carroll, but those familiar with his Dolphins career know he is better then what we saw last year and it sounds like he has improved his game….No doubt he will prove to be an upgrade over Bradley Fletcher’s last year play. That’s a given…….. If Cary and Byron Maxwell had the same exact Pricetag, Byron Maxwell would be a SEAHAWK, even an Eagle hater can’t say that Maxwell ISNT a big upgrade..
    ..
thurmond Vs. nate is the question mark…. But out front 7 has been shutting down opponents run games for almost two seasons now without Safety support, so what we really need is for Thurmond to be better in Coverage then Nate Allen, which shouldnt be THAT hard for Thurmond to do…heck, just don’t let WRs get behind him and he will be better then Nate..l Know Thurmond has no experience, but Nate didn’t set the Bar very high, and moving an experienced Nickel to safety ISNT that big of a transition in the passing game..Thurmond is intelligent football player who should handle it well
    ..
this season, I expect to have a better Fromt 7 then the seahawks.. I would NEVER trade our entire front 7 for the entire front 7 of the seahawks.

    1) We have been elite against the Run, and this year we will be even better with young players being a year older and Kiko added to the mix.
    .
    2) we were elite pass rushing/Sack defense last year and we should be even better this year with guys like Curry and Cox being another year older, and with what should be very solid Blitzing ILB tandem, and our pass rushing should also get a boost by corners who will Jam and disrupt WR timing
    ..
    3) Barwin, Kiko, Kendricks, Jenkins Literally makes us as good at defending TE’s as any Defense in the NFL

EVERYTHING comes down to Improving on our ability to get off the field on 3rd down, ESPECIALLY 3rd and Long, and Not giving up X plays… And I expect significant imprvements on 3rd and Long because we should be combining a better pass rush with corners who will do a much better job jamming at the Line of scrimage and disrupting Wr timing giving Curry, Cox, all our twists, stunts, ILB blitzes an extra second to get to the QB.
    ..
There is No doubt that Maxwell will provide better coverage then Cary, and it won’t be hard for Nolan to do a much better job then Bradley did last year.. We have a ton of talent on defense, the best kind of talemt, mhungry young talent that’s still growing and improving from one year to the next…and we Upgraded the 3 BIGGEST WEAKNESSES on the DEFENSE, Cary, Nate, and Bradley, while adding the top CB on the Market….stay Healthy and you will see the beginning of an elite Philly Defense this city can be proud of… gentle mans bet, after this year, I bet you this exact time next year we will be recognized Nationally as going into the 2016-2017 with a consensus top Defense… This is the last summer we will even be able to have this discussion because after this next season it will be obvious that our defense is not to be FUCKED WITH!
    ..
As bad as our secondary was last year, you already saw a Front 7 start to DOMINATE games.. You saw them DOMINATE the big bad dallas OL on the road Thanksgiving night… You saw this defense shut out the Giants which we don’t see too often.. And the exciting part is you saw those accomplishments on the backs of young players who havent maxed out their Talent yet and are still growing as individuals and as a unit… The strength of our pass rush was how selfless our guys are, how Discaplined they are, it’s not 4 talented guys trying to get their sack numbers up, Azzinaro had us rushing as a very Discaplined, cohesive unit…
    .
We should see an improved defense, ESPECIALLY in 3rd and Long because we don’t have “pretenders” at CB, our guys will press at the Line of scrimmage, we will blitz our LBs, force the QB to get rid of the ball, improved secondary makes the tackle short if the 1st down, bringing our Punt Returner Soroles on the field..
    ..
I really don’t understand how anyone can possibly not be excited about this years defense… I don’t understand AT ALL!!! We saw a lot of good last year on defense, and the guys who were weak links have ALL BEEN REPLACED? We had a Proboem at corner, the Eagles get rid of both corners, sigÅ„ the best corner on the Market, draft ROWE and people are still complaining? If there is 1 position you can complain about is safety, but the Eagles offered Devin McCourty 10mil a year, we can’t,rip them because he chose to stay in New England… He was the top safety available and we made an offer, clearly they didn’t like any of the lessor names… But in our scheme we want two former corners playing Safety anyway, so is it really that far fetched that Thurmond could fill this role?
    ..
This is the last summer you get to talk bad about the defense, after what you see this season, this time next year, everyone will be talking about The Eagles as one of the top defenses going into the 2016 season…..
    ..
People complain about a few positions, but the truth is that EVERY SINGLE TEAM has weaknesses,, there isn’t a team that’s strong at every single position….I’m Extremely Excited about this years defense. MY ONLY concern is Depth… We CANT AFFORD injuries to OLB or Safety, that’s a concern..bit every team has depth issues… If this group stays healthy, they will have a big year on defense, especially playing with an Elite Special teams that gives them good field position …. This defense isn’t far away from Greatness, we need a few young players to develop like ROWE,MS2, HickS, and another addition or two next offseason and we will have an ELITE defense to root for

  80. 80 GEAGLE said at 11:23 AM on August 15th, 2015:

Hard to judge.., only threw two incompletions so you can’t say he played bad but his stats are somewhat misleading because Tavon Austin took a screen pass and turned it into a 35yard gain accountin for half of Nicks yards… Completed a 12-15yard pass down the right sideline to Lance Kendricks and what looked like a 10 yard out to Kenny Britt along the left sideline..
    ..
Not enough data to say he looked bad or good, but it was weird to see him under center so much

The entire conversation has shifted from the time of the trade about the possibility of Bradford being ready for the season opener in Atlanta (which is a month away) vs the first preseason game.

No one at the time of the trade said he would be ready to go for the 1st preseason game.

  87. 87 ACViking said at 2:30 PM on August 15th, 2015:

Bradford injured his knee in late August 2014.

According to Bradford, the Rams, and the Eagles, Bradford’s injury was solely to the ACL. No cartilage damage.

The ACL recovery time — i.e., back on the field w/ no limits — for players, both QBs and non-QBs, over the past few years (as med-tech and rehab’s improved) seems to be 7-8 months . . . give or take a bit.

That’s enough time for Bradford to have been ready for OTAs.

But, granted, the general recovery time-table we’ve seen is principally for 1st-time ACL tears. Besides Carson Palmer being back out there for the Cards, despite 2x injury to his ACL well after Bradford, I haven’t seen enough 2nd-time tears to frame a recovery period.

(Also, Bradford’s tears were within about 10 months of each other.)

Just seems that Bradford’s recovery is slow — with the caveat that every injury of this type is different, 1st and 2nd time.

    Who knows why?

Ultimately, all that counts is opening day.

  88. 88 BobSmith77 said at 3:18 PM on August 15th, 2015:

As long as Bradford gets in 2 qtrs or so in the preseason, that’s fine. 1st preseason game is as pointless nowadays as the first 7-10 days of spring training in MLB.

Ridiculous that the preseason is still 4 games long but the owners will be damned before they give up a nice revenue generating opportunity especially one where they don’t have to technically pay the players.

Easily just have 3 games which would be sufficient to get starters some reps while giving enough time to determine who makes the roster & who doesn’t which is really the whole point of preseason football.

  89. 89 BobSmith77 said at 11:23 AM on August 15th, 2015:

There is going to be a lot of attention nationally on this game because of Tebow projected to get out of PT. ESPN ran it during Sportscenter this morning at the gym within the first 15 minutes of the broadcast.

Still rather see Barkley on this team though I do wonder why several reporters are talking about ‘showcasing him’ tomorrow. The question I ask is showcasing him for what exactly? Does Barkley get anything better than a 7th round pick (maybe a conditional 6th round pick if starts more than half a year)?

  90. 90 GEAGLE said at 12:43 PM on August 15th, 2015:

We,would be lucky to get THAT much for Barkley… Hopefully a team like the Jets is desperate enough… The Problem is that the Titans might decide to trade Mettenberger which means that any team that wants to trade a QB would look towards him before they consider trading for Barkley… And if you can trade Barkley, you may not even be able to get a pick. Good chance he could only fetch a young back up player at another position in return..
    ..
Personally I have no clue what to expect from Barkley vs. Tebow…. barkley should start to show some significant growth now that he is in his 3rd year playing in the same offense,,, we SHOULD see Barkley completely outclass a backüp like Tebiw who just learned the offense 3 months ago… Who knows if that will actually happen or not… No matter how TEBOW looks you probably won’t be able to get trade value for him…,but If Barkley doesn’t look much better then TEBOW in his 3rd year, if it’s close, I would keep TEBOW (Can’t believe I just said that YUCK)… If it’s close, keep TEBOW because would have more upside left in this offense having only learned it a few months ago… To make the team Barkley should be obviously better then TEBOW and he should show serious growth from last summer…. Ultimately, neither is probably much Better then the other, so if you can get value for one of them, take the value and keep, whoever is left over

This city has started to get a little excitement about some of Tebows improvement, but I can’t shake the feeling that tomorrow we will be reminded how Terrible of a passer he is…. love to be wrong And see him run around and make plays….
    ..
As crappy as they both are, they at least are more interesting then 99% of the QBs you typically see in the second half of a preseason…and I do like that they are in a legit QB battle, do or die. The best man wins a job, loser leaves town.. So at least we get some interesting drama in the second half of meaning.ess PS games..

  94. 94 Greg Richards said at 12:50 PM on August 15th, 2015:

I don’t think Bradford is necessarily 100% healthy. If you’ve read the articles on rehabilitation versus reconditioning one of the big things about reconditioning is that you don’t have the player be totally inactive until the injury is 100% healed. You want their body to get used to athletic movements so that once the injury is healed there isn’t a long ramp up between being medically healthy and being effective as an athlete. So they could want him taking the starter reps and still making athletic movements now early in training camp in a controlled environment and he isn’t necessarily ready to be placed in an uncontrolled environment meaning actual preseason games. From everything I’ve read, Bradford is close to that point. If he isn’t and they want to give him time to become 100% healthy at some point they will have to balance between still having Bradford practice in the offense and getting Sanchez ready to potentially start the season until Bradford is ready. I don’t believe that will be an issue, but if Bradford also doesn’t play next week, then there will be more cause for concern. If they let him practice next week in the joint practices, I think they’re confident in his health. I wouldn’t consider a practice with another team, whose players might want to send a message, a controlled environment.

  95. 95 anon said at 1:37 PM on August 15th, 2015:

I’d worry more about the Ravens pass rush than the Colts. That said when they signed him i thought there was a good chance Sanchez would start the season, but they’ve probably been so enamored w/ sammy b that they changed that plan.

  96. 96 DJH said at 2:00 PM on August 15th, 2015:

Yes, I was—and still am—anticipating Sanchez starting the season. However, Bradford taking the large majority of 1st team reps has caused me to reconsider. But sitting out this preseason game is something I expected.

If Chip has seen enough from Bradford to make him think Bradford has the potential to be his franchise QB, I say hold him out of the entire preseason and start of season if need be.

We have it pounded into our heads that without a franchise QB, coaches and GMs are screwed. If Bradford could be Chip’s guy, then Chip should allow him to get to 100% before playing him. Even if that means having Sanchez play the first game or two.

  97. 97 GEAGLE said at 2:42 PM on August 15th, 2015:

I hear you… And believe me when I say, I would be completely fine with sitting him the entire preseason, but he is better off for his sake to take some preseason reps before he plays a regular season game
    ..
I think EVERY,QB in the NFL needs to face a live pass rush and shake off some rust before his first preseason game… This isn’t unique to Bradford. Even the healthy QBs, they haven’t faced a live pass rush in 8 months, all these months of practicing with that Red Jersey against players they know won’t touch them…. it’s easy to be Brave, sit in the pocket, stand tall, go thru all your progressions when you know the defense isn’t allowes to touch you… Very different then doing that against a live pass rush that will all be trying to knock hm out of the game and test his durability..
    ..
if he needs to sit all preseason to be fully healthy, so be it… But for his sake, he is better off getting a taste of live bullets flying at him before he takes the field In the regular season….if Bradford starts next Saturday, I will be very excited because in my mind there is ZERO chance he takes the field at less then 100% fully healthy…

  98. 98 Jarock said at 1:42 PM on August 15th, 2015:

From what I’ve read, I tend to believe Bradford’s probably completely physically healthy. With that said, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Bradford doesn’t really trust his knee to go 100%. Overcoming that mental hurdle will be crucial to whether Bradford’s ultimately a success or not.

He could sit out the entire preseason, play 16 games and No one would even remember he sat out of the preseason, Conversly he could play great in every preseason game, get hurt in week 7 and no one will care that he played great in the preseason.
    ..
The kid knows that this year He has tens of millions of dollars on the line, all coming down to whether he can stay healthy for a season or not… Bradfkrd WOULDNT even consider playing in the preseason if he wasn’t completely healthy yet
    ..
I get it that everyone wants to see him play, but I’m sure Bradford cares a heckuva lot more about staying healthy this year, then we care about seeing him get 10 snaps tomorrow.

    ..
After everything that kids been thru iI can’t imagine he would play before being FULLY HEALTHY knowing that anothet injury could end his career and when you have a backup like Sanchez, you don’t Rush an important player back before he is fully healthy…. Now being Fully Healthy, and being in full game shape are two different things, but you can bet if he stepping onto the field that Knee is 100% where it needs to be, this kid was rushed back last year, no way he would allow that to haooen again….. And like I said, if he isn’t Fully Healthy tomorrow, I doubt he would be fully healthy 6’days later for the 2nd game..
    ..
I doubt there will be much difference in his body between now and next Saturday”.
    ..
This kid is in a,contract year, he has been rushed back before, he knows staying healthy during the season is more important then Now… Doubt that kid takes a Single snap in a game without being Fully Healed.. And he is going to have to play to go from practice shape to get ready for Game Shape..
    ..
Personally, I don’t have any concerns with SAM at the moment, if he plays next Sunday then no harm no foul as far as I concerned….. But if after practicing against the Ravens this week, they decide Bradford shouldn’t play Saturday against the Ravens, then I would be SERIOUSLY CONCERNED… Even the great established QBs don’t sit out of the second game..

Did you hear SAM Talk about the decision yesterday. Sounded pretty serious and Emphatic about wanting to play, sounded Genuinly dissapointed to not be playing… Either he is a great actor, or in his mind, he is ready to roll….
    ..
But we will KNOW EVERYTHING we need to know next Saturday…

No exaggeration, I would have cut him the moment he sat out of his first training camp practice the other day. He should have been cut on the spot or at least call ever GM see if they will trade you the 75th olayer on their roster in return
    ..
I hate to talk like that, because I think the world of that kids potential as an NFL safety… But Mentally, I wouldn’t want to go to war with that kid.
    ..
When he was 100% cleared by doctors months ago, yet still felt the need to sit out of all of our OTAs off to the side, stretching with trainers every day, he used up all his good will. He sounded Like he understood the position his actions put him in, and sounded like he was confident that he would gamble on himself sitting out of OTAs and trust he would put on a show and win a spot at training camp… Yet we haven’t even had two weeks of camp yet and wolff is already sitting out of practice with “injury”??? Sorry, but Get him the fuck out of here… He doesn’t get it,.. The scary part is we are so weak at safety that you would love to be able to count on him on our bench, but we can’t trust him, how can we count on him?
    ..
I hope Earl Wolff gets cut before tomorrow’s game….actually let him play tomorrow, just in case he looks good and we can trade him for a bag of donuts.
play Earl Wolff all of the second half, try and trade him Monday and Tuesday, can’t trade him, cut him Wednesday morning… he can’t be an eagle
    ..
Damn shame, 210 lbs, almost 6foot, flies around with his athleticism.. In terms of Safety potential he would definitely deserve a roster spot, but you can’t trust him…cut him, and just go into the season with Thurmond,Jenkins,Maragos, Prosinski and Jerome Couplin. I have No idea how Couplin compares to the talent and upside of Wolff, but Couplin is a solid ST player and he has been working hard all pffseason, actually doing extra Jenkins and the DBs instead of stretching all offseason like wolff.
    ..
Hopefully Couplin comes back from his Apendectomy on Monday and looks good next Saturday…Wolff shouldn’t be allowed to remain an eagle… Cut him prior to game 2… What a waste of talent

AP barely played last year during new coach MIke Zimmers first season so Its not like AP has been in this offense for years, If AP Doesnt need to play, no reason to risk demarco and have him hit during the preseason,,,

I’m going to try and chart the special teams personnel we use every time the ST is on the field over the course of the preseason.. Curious to see if allocation of ST snaps over the course of the preseason give us clues on who ends up Making the roster… For Example, if I see an Undrafted kid like Denzel Rice get a lot of ST snaps, even when guys like Maragos who we know will play ST ate in the game, Im curious to eventually see if he ends up making the roster
    ..
Or if Couplin gets significant more ST snaps then Earl Wolff…curious to see if that ends up meaning Couplin makes the roster instead of Wolff.
    ..
basically Chart who gets the ST reps over the course of the preseason, and then when the final roster is announced, go back and see if the ST reps gave clues on who was going to make the roster,,, see how preseason ST snaps correlate to who makes the final roster…
