Roster Update – Down to 76

Posted: August 30th, 2015 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 162 Comments »

The Eagles have to be down to 75 players this week. They went ahead and made 12 cuts today. There weren’t any real surprises.

OL Mike Coccia
OL Jared Wheeler
OL Kevin Graf
WR G.J. Kinne
WR Josh Reese
WR Michael Johnson
TE Justin Tukes
DL Alfy Hill
DL Jeremy Towns
LB Dasman McCullum
CB Marc Anthony
S Brandan Bishop

Graf is the player who surprised me the most. He played well in the 2014 preseason and spent most of the year on the practice squad. He was actually on the roster for a couple of weeks. He struggled as a pass blocker, but stood out as a run blocker. This year he never really stood out at all.

Kinne is a cult hero to Eagles fans, but just lacks NFL ability.

There is one more move to come. I think the hesitation is due to Cody Parkey’s situation. If he can’t kick on Thursday night, Kip Smith needs to stay on the roster.

There will be some interesting names hitting the streets from other teams. Don’t make too much of this. Guys cut at this point tend not to be that good. If they were, their teams would keep them for the final preseason game. I’m more interested in the cuts that will happen next weekend.

The Eagles could look for help at a few spots.

* OLB – Will Marcus Smith play, be cut or put on IR? Brad Jones and Bryan Braman can be effective backups, but the team would be in big trouble if there was an injury.

* S – Jerome Couplin and Ed Reynolds are battling for the #5 Safety spot. Neither has secured the job, but both have looked okay. The Eagles might see someone they like better.

* OL – The Eagles have a good starting unit. Matt Tobin has played well as the backup LT. David Molk has played well as the backup C. Beyond that, things are wide open. John Moffitt and Dennis Kelly could make the team, but the Eagles could also look for help.

* TE – If Zach Ertz is healthy for Week 1, things are fine. If there are concerns, the Eagles might need to look for help. Eric Tomlinson has shown potential this summer, but hasn’t necessarily looked like someone you would count on in a real game.

* QB – I would love to see the Eagles let go of both Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow. Neither player has looked good in the last couple of games. I would prefer the Eagles to sign a young player with some upside. The Packers have 4 QBs. If they cut Matt Blanchard, he would be of interest. I know some of you would like to see the Eagles go after E.J. Manuel. I have no interest in him. Seems like he might stick in Buffalo at this point. Sean Renfree could be cut by the Falcons. He would be interesting. The Rams might cut Austin Davis, who played well against the Eagles last year.

None of these guys is anything special. The point is that we’ve seen next to nothing from Barkley. And Tebow remains a mystery. We don’t know how he would play when on the field with starters and a gameplan built specifically for him. To this point, he’s been slightly less than spectacular.

* * * * *

BGN had a good piece recently on Titans OG Andy Levitre. He will almost certainly be cut. Should the Eagles go after him to play RG? That’s hard to say. At his best, he was one of the top OGs in the league. But that was a few years back.

Andrew Gardner has played well enough to make you feel comfortable this summer. But it would be interesting to add someone and then have Gardner as the #6 OL. He would be a terrific swing player at G/T.

I haven’t watched Levitre recently so I can’t comment on whether he would be a good target. One issue is that he’s mostly played LG. The Eagles need someone at RG, if anywhere.

I think it is more likely the teams adds an OL who would come in here to be depth and compete for time, if they make any move at all.

I think we should dump both Tebow and Barkley and pick up the kid from Green Bay, Blanchard

  2. 2 RC5000 said at 8:35 PM on August 30th, 2015:

I don’t know much about Blanchard he is 26 and he looked a little interesting but he would be for PS? He doesn’t know system and won’t get many reps so I’d rather use roster spot for one of the tough cuts.

    Roster, usually inactive

He can’t help you much this year but I guess if you see him as potential future QB. I’d probably prefer putting someone on practice squad but I’m not as into keeping Tomlinson, Mostert, Bailey on roster as I was. Though I don’t really want to lose Bailey.Still it’s probably not a big deal either way when you’re talking last spots.

Citing multiple sources, Profootballtalk.com reports “no
schism exists” between the Redskins’ front office and owner Dan Snyder
regarding the future of Robert Griffin III in Washington.

A previous ESPN report strongly hinted Redskins management
and coaches want to move on from RG3, but are “meeting resistance from
team ownership.” PFT’s Mike Florio contends that “this simply isn’t
true,” and “everyone is on the same page.” Florio insists Snyder is not
    hindering the Redskins’ football operations.

    ROTFL

Yeah right. I don’t know who the bigger clown is- Snyder or Florio.

  8. 8 Greg Richards said at 9:26 PM on August 30th, 2015:

    Schefter says there’s a schism. Florio says there isn’t. Verdict – there’s a schism.

  9. 9 laeagle said at 1:12 AM on August 31st, 2015:

Best part is going to be when Florio writes a smart ass post explaining how what he said would happen didn’t, but that he was somehow still right all along.

  15. 15 A_T_G said at 9:33 PM on August 30th, 2015:

In the Raiders game, Amari Cooper ran about an 8-yard out on second and six. When he turned to catch the ball he was looking directly into the sun, and the ball went right past him. The next play, on third down, Cooper ran the same route, QB made the same throw, and the Raiders punted.

I have trouble imagining us calling that route in that situation. I find it impossible to believe we would do it twice, on consecutive plays.

  16. 16 Baloophi said at 12:47 AM on August 31st, 2015:

I wonder if Amari was also revved up like a deuce…

Except he got picks last year. He is an ‘ok’ Free Safety. He has decent range and can make plays on the ball. By this point in his career he has decent vet experience.

He did not have the cover skills the Eagles want in their safety nor does he tackle well enough nor take the right angles at times. But he is a league average Safety at this point for most teams.

  20. 20 stephenstempo said at 5:08 AM on August 31st, 2015:

I feel like that says more about the safety play league-wide.

  21. 21 Jernst said at 8:50 AM on August 31st, 2015:

eh…I thought he left a lot to be desired as a free safety. Always seemed late to give help over the top. Rarely showed good anticipation and had terrible situational awareness. And, worst of all he seemed to bite on every playaction pass, pump fake and/or head fake by the WR. Sadly though, that’s about league average for safeties these days.

A few plays later, he caught the ball over the middle, took the hit as two players sandwiched him and then fell off, pulled his helmet back down, and took off running.

He is not quite as fast as he was, but the finesse guy who doesn’t realize how big he is? That guy is gone.

  29. 29 RobNE said at 9:58 AM on August 31st, 2015:

is he likely to make their team?

  30. 30 D3FB said at 10:07 AM on August 31st, 2015:

    Yes.

    He’s their 3rd/4th TE.

    Jermaine Gresham is on PUP.
Troy Niklas was a 2014 2nd round pick, was hurt most of last year.
Darren Fells is 29 year old who played bball at UC Irvine, then bounced around Europe before trying football. Made team last year.

Other two guys in camp for them are just camp bodies.

They run a decent amount of 2 tight. I’d imagine he’s penciled into the 53 right now.

  31. 31 RobNE said at 11:10 AM on August 31st, 2015:

amazing how two guys Eagles brought along from being out of football (Momah and Villanova Ranger guy) are now on the cusp of making 53 man rosters. Good for them, but I’m a little jealous they aren’t with us.

  32. 32 ac134spectre said at 1:31 AM on August 31st, 2015:

Levitre… can’t help but think of Todd Herremans at this point. Basically he had a really bad year due to injury. If the team had been dumb they’d have cut him. Titans… meh.

Anyone know if he was playing hurt?

  33. 33 Media Mike said at 4:41 AM on August 31st, 2015:

He’s essentially sucked the entire time he’s been in Tennessee and I’ve read zero excuse making from an injury perspective.

Maybe the big money lazied him up.

  34. 34 Fufina said at 4:54 AM on August 31st, 2015:

Well there is a long history of players signing big deals being put in the wrong situation and scheme and failing big time, then going to another team and succeeding.

I think there is a chance Levitre can reboot his career…. Just not sure if he is a Chip guy. The problem fans need to adjust too is that Chip is only going to let a certain kind of player in the locker room – a 100% committed football guy. It is why i can never see a RGKnee being a fit, and while i think Levitre can become a solid guy again nothing over the last 2 years screams someone who is a 100% football committed guy.

  35. 35 Media Mike said at 5:49 AM on August 31st, 2015:

The RGMe&mybrand show wouldn’t be a good fit here, I agree.

    ..
    colts cut Guard Donald Thomas..
    ..
Don’t know if we should be talking Guards after Gardner, Barbre and Tobin all had a solid game against the Pack…moffit even improved,

I’m certainly not against adding more talent at backüp OL

How is Tebow a mystery? He stinks as a QB and could only make a team at some other position which he refuses to consider. If Barkley has shown “next to nothing”, then Tebow has shown even less since Barkley has clearly been the better QB. The real mystery is why Chip brought Tebow in as a QB and why he remains on the roster. I’d be fine moving on from both Barkley and Tebow, but if Chip dumps Barkley and keeps Tebow as a QB, he has some serious explain’ to do.

  48. 48 JoeBlow said at 8:49 AM on August 31st, 2015:

I agree, and i’ve done a complete 180 on Tebow

I hate the sight of him in an Eagles uniform. He has always been seriously flawed as a qb and there is no upside to him. I realize there isn’t much upside to Barkley either and that’s why i’d rather cut bait with both and let Burton be the emeregency QB. Keeping Tebow would be aggravating

  49. 49 GEAGLE said at 9:15 AM on August 31st, 2015:

  51. 51 unhinged said at 9:16 AM on August 31st, 2015:

My first take on Chip signing Tebow was that he wanted to light a bonfire under Barkley’s ass. If either one of them survives the cut to 53, Kelly’s going to be inundated with “what is the thinking, there?”

  52. 52 GEAGLE said at 9:40 AM on August 31st, 2015:

    Until proven,otherwise, TEBOW was/is a “Camp arm”… Nothing more,,,.

IF GJ Kinney didmt ask to switch positions to try and make the team, I assume TEBOW would have NEVER been brought in….
    ..
I’m extremely appreciative of chip, but if he wastes a roster spot on this scab, I’ll be sick… I’d rather have 2 QBs, then This glorified runningback, who is too selfish to play other positions to help us win…. GJ Kinney will DO ANYTHING to help this team.. Unless TEBOW gets to play QB, he isn’t Interested, so As far as I’m concerned, he can piss off

I thought Molk was horrible against GB, and PFF backs that up giving him the lowest grade on our team against the Pack..
    ..
Watched Taylor Harts snaps the last two games, kid is really starting to put it together, not only two gapping, but also making plays..
    ..
Didn’t watch Couplin or Reynolds snaps yet from the last game, but watching live, I thought both were making more mistakes then previous games..
    ..
I was all SAM Bradford’ed up on Saturday night, didn’t realize how good demarco looked.
    ..
Kendricks had a bad game, but not worried, it was his first game action, im sure he knocked the rust off…. But what concerns me is, if Kemdricks needed a game to Knock Rust off, how will Kiko perform game 1 after not getting any game time to knock of the rust of missing the last season? With that said, let’s not carried away with a “Cuban Missle(Kiko) Crisis”…
    ..
Pleased that all our Guards looked good Saturday night.. TObin, Gardner, Barbre all played well, and Moffitt probably had his best game of the preseason

  56. 56 RogerPodacter said at 9:44 AM on August 31st, 2015:

didn’t notice too much of Couplin, but i noticed Reynolds a lot, and not in a good way. on ST, he was on the punting team, and nearly gave up a blocked punt. on D, he seemed to be ineffective.

  57. 57 GEAGLE said at 9:56 AM on August 31st, 2015:

Be nice if we can find a more talented safety off waivers this week,,, but safeties are so scarce Its Probably a pipe dream… Ideally Thurmond and Jenk stay healthy all year and the backups don’t matter…
    ..
The backüp safeties ARENT just competing for roster spot, they are competing to see who the 5th best DB is to play in Nickel? If a safety happens to be better then the corners, the safety will come in for Nickel and thurmond or Jenkins move to slot corner,..
    ..

It’s not about Bradford. It was about the Ravens making it known to their division that they intend to do this all season. Bengals run the option, and you better believe that the Browns will do it if Manziel sees the field. Steelers ran it a few times with Rothlisburger last year as well. Bradford was just collateral damage.

Right now, I think they are an 8-8 team. They haven’t figured out the RB situation, and even with their three backs it’ll be difficult to replace 400 carries.

If they can’t grind it out on the ground, their defense is going to get exposed. I don’t think they’ve done enough on that side of the ball to have a defense that can win them games. If Dallas isn’t holding the ball for 3/5 of the game, IMO they can’t repeat their success from last year.

  84. 84 GEAGLE said at 11:09 AM on August 31st, 2015:

This dallas team just does not scare me…
    ..
Their secondary was average with Scandrick who is probably their best DB, out for the season,.. How the hell can that sexondary matchup with all our weapons? Chip will have guys running free all day against that secondary ..
    ..
Even if Dallas actually has the best OL in the league, our OL is also pone of the best.. Even if you want to say Dallas OL is better then ours (which im not ready to concede), they aren’t THAT much better then ours.. Our OL is up there with ANYONES… There isn’t a big enough DISCREPENCY between our offensive Lines,to make up for the discrepancy between Demarco, Mathews and Sproles being on a completely different level to McFadden, Dunbar and Randles…. The discrepancies between our stables of runningbacks is staggering…. Not ONLY can we run the ball DRASTICALLY BETTER then Dallas, but our Front 7 can stop the run Drastically more then their front 7…. On both sides of the ball, we are on a different level then them when it comes to the run…
    .
Dez Bryant is a Beast, they have a passing Attack that deserves respect but weapons are up there with ANYONES,, so even if you are someone who thinks dallas has better weapons in the passing game(which I don’t agree with), it’s not going to be significantly better then our weapons.. The difference will be minimal because our weapons can compare with anyones… No doubt our starting secondary outclasses theirs, and the DISCREPENCY is bigger when comparing secondaries, then the minimal DISCREPENCY between our pass catching weapons and theirs…
    ..
Our Defense should prove to be on another level, and as long as our OL is healthy, im confidemt we will put up 30pts with bradford or Sanchez

I assume the truth lies somewhere in the middle. But I’m a little surprised not to see more concern out of those fans. I hope Falcons take us this lightly.

Do you think our first opponent has more of an advantage b/c they’ve had lots more time to game plan, or do you think they really don’t do that for teams until the week before anyway b/c the rest of camp is about identifying your 53, installing your own plays etc.?

Kid is a weapon too, 3 TEs we have no problem playing in games…. Sproles known as one of the toughest weapons to matchup with in the game,in the hands of a matchup Guru like Chip….. I just don’t see how defenses have enough speed and players that can cover, to match up with all our weapons, and if you want to put more corners in the game, we will smash you behind the Boss Hog Jason peters and our new physicak, bruising run game…. Who the F wants what and where they want it at? They gonna have to show me they have defenders that can matchup with this arsenal of weapons..

One of the most effective wrinkles we are seeing on offense is WR crossing routes. In the past, such routes were career-killers because DBs and LBs would crush the receiver. 133. 133 Greg Richards said at 12:17 PM on August 31st, 2015:

Agreed. A judge’s discretion is very limited regarding reasons he can overturn an arbitration decision governed by a CBA. He doesn’t have to agree with the league’s interpretation of the evidence, he doesn’t have to agree with the league’s actions. He can overturn the league’s ruling only if they violated the actual CBA. So, he can rule in the league’s favor and still bash the league in his decision. He can also stay his decision and grant an injunction preventing the suspension from being enforced until the appelate court makes a decision assuming Brady appeals. So practically the NFL will claim it won because it’s authority was confirmed and the NFLPA can claim it won because the judge bashed the NFL and the suspension isn’t being enforced. I suspect the appeals court would again side with the league, but by that time Brady may be retired.
