Help for the Defense
Posted: April 30th, 2016 | Author: Tommy Lawlor | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 357 Comments »The Eagles moved back in the 6th round, adding a 7th round pick. When they got back on the clock, the Eagles finally added some help for the defense, drafting DB Blake Countess.
This is a really interesting pick. Countess played at Michigan for 3 years and then transferred to Auburn for his final season. He played CB and S. I’m really interested to see where the Eagles use him. Countess could play FS, CB or possibly in the slot.
Put on the tape and you see a good player. He has man cover skills. Solid hitter and tackler. He lacks ideal speed, but has good quickness. Lists at 5-10, 184. That is good size for a slot CB.
Countess wasn’t a guy getting a lot of attention until Auburn’s Pro Day.
Cornerback Blake Countess — 5-9 3/4, 184 — ran the 40 in 4.5 and 4.48 seconds. He had a 36 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-1 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.19 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.85 seconds. He also performed 21 reps on the bench press. He worked out well enough to get earn a camp look by an NFL team.
21 reps on the bench is good for a DB. You see that strength show up with the physicality he plays with. He’s got a CB build, but it won’t shock me if they try him at FS. Should also be a good STer.
_
Yeah I am thinking they envision him as a FS, at least to start. Kind of have a logjam of mediocre CB’s as it is anyways

Roseman said a team tried trading up to the third round last night with them — the target was Seumalo. So Eagles were happy they took him.
ROSEMAN: who you after?
VIKINGS: seumalo
ROSEMAN: i’ll call you back *turns in pick for seumalo*
VIKINGS: (watching on tv) son of a
That would be so perfect if it’s how it really played out.
I suppose that was after they considered trading down but were afraid of not getting him?
Left this in the other thread…more fitting here

Tackling: Plays well above size with aggression and closing burst to attack forward. Will aggressively charge the box or the boundary and slices into ball carriers without breaking stride to lay firm hits.
Man Cover Skills: Is not particularly sticky on route stems to stay attached to the hip. Disconnect between a fine functional
athletic skill set and ability to feel receivers and mirror on route stems.
Coverage IQ: Plays with greatest impact and ability to impact the game when coming forward; lacks same level of twitch or
confidence in movements when being tested to peripherals.
Acceleration: Plenty of ability to stick foot in the ground and get downhill; is effective both in charging the flats or driving into the MOF. Turn and run capabilities do not appear as strong.
Toughness: Mean, nasty demeanor when attacking the football. Very hard nose to duck into traffic and stick body into piles trying to clean up mess.
Flexibility: Adequate bendability but lack of efficiency in hip hinge appears to contribute to softer coverage when trying to play off the ball and gain depth to sustain leverage.
Effort: Tremendous motor. Plays with rapid close ability and will consistently outrun teammates in pursuit to the football. Flashes into the screen suddenly in the run game and is consistently an additional defender on the boundary.
Ball Skills: Is very strong at the catch point; will play receivers and place jarring hits to dislodge the football. Has plant and drive ability to break on throws in front of face; particularly from the flats or hook/curl region.
Blitz Ability: Twitch and physicality as a player present very well as an option to pressure the pocket. Plays fast and decisive
Summary: Auburn Cornerback Blake Countess is a bit of a difficult projection.
Countess (Michigan/Auburn) played at his best in a bit of a hybrid role; when he was free and shaded overtop of receivers and squatted as a zone defender he definitively made a more consistent impact of the game than any reps he played working backwards and to the
boundary. Countess may very well be a nickel defender and there is nothing wrong with that; he is a strong fifth defensive back option who can be relied upon to charge aggressively and attack the ball in underneath areas of the field. Coutness should not be relied upon to lock up receivers one on one in space; he simply has not shown high quality man to man coverage and would require a good deal of time and investment. Should be a zone/buzz defender against spread sets. Countess would be excellent value in the middle of Day 3.
Sound like a safety we just signed to a pretty big deal in fa
Charley Casserly brings a strong artificial hair color game. Some would even say Trumpian.
The thing with Trump is, that’s probably the hair’s natural colour, it’s just not natural hair. Or even human.
Our draft feels so underwhelming compared to the Jaguars 🙁
Agree, but if Wentz turns out to be top 5 QB it won’t matter
Yea Wentz is the only guy I feel excited about.
lots of pressure
But Philly is an easy town to play QB in.
They didn’t need Wentz.
Just the fact the Eagles made this move made me thrilled with the draft.
Truthfully it feels underwhelming compared to the rest of the division too.
It’s all about Wentz really.
Giants and Washington cleaned up
Giants have had a “meh” draft so far
B because you know the names and does not of the eagles picks? Remember Hicks last year? Nobody outside hand and hard core film guys know more than the popular names somebody on Twitter thought was a 2nd round
hicks was a stud that had been injured.
The only player that I haven’t even heard of was Countess. What does Hicks have to do with this though?
My point is that you have most likely only heard or read about the guys going now and it’s not like we pick a kicker in the 2nd
I think you need a more clear argument.
Noooooo!! Damnit Rams
did they trade nick foles back to us?
Took Mike Thomas.
we have 4 7th rounders or 3?
We have 3
Haha Chip takes Jeff Driskel
Driskel is awful. Granted he had terrible offensive coaching at UF, but he was brutal there.
Funny is they took him over Adams who certain twitter guys think is clearly the best qb in this draft
is vernon adams stll on the board
Yes
Seems like an Andy Reid pick, but I’m intrigued…
How many F’ing times is NFLN going to play this Moritz Behringer clip?
No offense GE.
None taken.
Peake is still out there….?
Yeah
And Feeney. Hard to imagine us not grabbing either one in the 7th if available.
Steven Daniels more likely/
And Cash and Scooby Wright
Crazy. I thought Scooby would be long gone by now.
Smallwood is a funny last name.
Not for him probably

The #Dolphins and the #Browns exchanged 7th round picks while sending Jamar Taylor for a fresh start in Cleveland
Yeah, if a former 2nd round pic only gets you a swap of 7ths, we aren’t going to get anything from the dregs of our roster.
[…] Tommy Lawlor The Eagles moved back in the 6th round, adding a 7th round pick. When they got back on the clock, […]
Cowboys pick 3 times here at the end of this round
when’s the last time we ever had a compensatory pick?
I can’t even remember.
we have to get our happiness from fa not the draft. every year it’s oh – this guy?
2013 7th round. Took David King.
Looking back further, we had two 7th round compensatory picks in 2011 and 2010 (most notable pick was Kurt Coleman). Before that, we had a 4th (Ikegwuonu) and two 6ths (Studebaker and Joe Mays) in 2008. So a looong time since a relatively significant compensatory pick.
This draft feels like Carson Wentz and the afterthoughts.
howie said fa was our draft.
Yeah, but part of that is Oline picks are boring – but they are necessary (fu*king Chip)

New Eagles CB Blake Countess allowed just 1 TD on 71 targets for Auburn in 2015:
did he start on the outside or was he a slot corner? hopefully he’s good, i actually like some of the guys we drafted last year.
Sixth round CB hype continues for another year.
Just throwing a list of guys that might be of interest

damn I was typing this up when some of these guys got drafted
Cowboys took frazor and chip took burbridge
Frazier was taken by DAL.
I’d add Steven Daniels, Travis Feeney, Scooby Wright, and Tyler Makatevich as possibilities at LB
I thought Feeney was gone but apparently not.
The Cowboys just drafted a basketball player

lol, these god damned steelers,
Get your hand out of my pocket!
Damn it, wanted Rico Gaethers on our practice squad… Hope he screws Dallas and chases an NBA dream
Steelers took Travis Feeney. Seems like every year the Steelers take a LB I want.
so far it’s been better them than us.
I’m hating them this year. They took Hargrave too.
yup, and I wanted Sean Davis as well
They stunk it up the first two rounds
Have we ever had the Mr. Irrelevant pick? We have the third to last and I was thinking I don’t remember ever having the last pick
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Irrelevant
In 1949, 1950, and 1961. Otherwise known as the year after the three NFL championships.
Looks like we’ve never gotten the last compensatory pick which is how you usually do it these days, but apparently the max number of compensatory picks were used up by the 6th round this year.
Thx. Unfortunately not old enough to remember the last time I guess
vadal alexander in the 7th?..thought he would go 4th RD
So, not one of these kids drafted to any team has ever played a down in the NFL, why are some of you already wasting thought on who has had a better draft than the Eagles? Are you just miserable?
No. It’s what people do. If you’re not going to have an opinion then why bother even watching?
You are one if those guys that booed McNabb, aren’t you?
Uh, no. You can have an opinion without being a brainless dope.
Oh F now
Ouch. Skins snatch Daniels in front of us
bruce arians has real gravitas…2 time coach of the year..shame it took so long to recognize his talent…
wish the iggles gave him a shot
Despite our distaste for him he ended up being a better bet than the Chippah was. He’s a bit of an asshole though, but I’ll take a winning asshole. God that’s a strange sentence.
Grossssss
Remember when he wrote a letter to the league to protest losing to us? THAT’S gravitas.
he maybe a jerk..but no way he’s not a top 5 coach
You ever see the Denzel movie FLIGHT about the Alcoholic pilot? bruce Arians “swag” reminds me of John Goodman as a Jamaican drug dealer in Flight..
Baloophi deliver late in the 9th.
Washington straight up just trolled us.
Yup..traded in front of us to snatch daniels, smh.
who’s the pick now? Matakevich?
Jalen Mills. D3FB?
Talented typical LSU DB. Didn’t watch much cuz of the DV stuff.
Mills. Good pick
Jalen Mills!!
Ooh, nice pick. Thought we’d go there in 6th round.
Holy shit.
Just drafted a kid with a domestic violence wrap sheet.
Yeah they’re not seeming to care about that stuff very much.
Luckily we didn’t invest higher round picks on these guys.
Still taking two guys with pretty fucked up backgrounds is pretty wild.
who is the other one?
Wentz?
Smallwood
smallwood..RB
Smallwood
Even more amazing was the Niners taking Rashard Robinson.
Chip is just laying low until he can spread his venom.
Plus a short DE and a short CB.
Kelly *not* in charge
Was there really any doubt? After what went down here, his credibility as a GM may be dead as a doornail.
Plus a tradeup for a first round guard.
Love this one!

we need the kid from temple….no mlb depth..hicks gets hurt we are screwed

We got a nice player from a 7th round pick. Well done Howie
Generally, you’re very anti-DV guys.
Unless he’s one of our DV guys, then he’s a good DV guy with a gun rather than a bad DV guy with a gun. Or something.
DeY NoT ScAmbuGs iF daY PlAy GUUD 4 US!
Coach –
enjoy your birthday yesterday?
Solid day overall thanks.
What exactly does this mean?
Eagles can be pretty vicious birds. I guess that’s what he meant.
And what’s a Marvo?
Smallwood and Mills probably wouldn’t have been picked if chip was still here. But a lot of time and money go into investigating each prospect. If this kid can clean it up and not repeat his past transgressions he could be up there with JaCorey Shepard as late round picks who have a shot to build themselves a career in Philly…. Didn’t see Smallwood play as much as Mills tho, hopefully he can at least provide an upgrade to Barner
Saints just took Lasco
Will we take a WR? Kenny Lawler please.
Think of someone the Eagles should take . . .
He’ll go in the next 2 picks.
That’s how it’s been.
I WANT JARED NORRIS GOD DAMNIT
Did Pederson talk him up?
No he’s just a really solid backup Mike.
i’m glad howie was able to get some value out of this round
Still want a pass rusher. Ochi?
Is Howie going to resign Vick if we’re going to bring these knuckleheads in?
Who is Alex mccalister?
Big, tall DE from Florida.
project with upside.
Or a “prupside”
That’s a Howie pick
We brought this guy in for a visit right?
yes
” . . . Was dismissed from the team late in the year.”
______________
Yeah, no chance the Eagles draft this guy (or Mills and Smallwood) if the GENIUS were still running things
Yeah, no chance that character correlates with success.
Quick googling makes it sound like he wasn’t going to play the bowl due to an injury, and called an agent.
I called it yesterday! (or early today… it’s starting to blur together)
OK, not the pass rusher I was hoping for. They had him in for a visit.
Howie with a Gator…
wtf…we should have taken the temple kid
Matakevich too slow to play middle in our Def system, better fit as ILB in 3-4
This is another guy with “character” stuff
I think it’s smart to take low character guys late. It’s usually why they drop so you get a little extra value there and if they do something foolish you just cut them and oh well the guy was only a 7th rounder anyway
It’s also important to remember that some people do actually learn from mistakes, and having a chance at an NFL career can be motivating. Not every kid with Charechter issues should be placed into the same “don’t touch” Category.
..
A lot won’t change, but some kids do learn from mistakes. As long as we are thoroughly investigating these kids, we should occasionally come across a kid we belíeve in enough to take a shot on… But if you take a kid like that, he needs To be on a shorter leash than everyone else. Walk a straight line, or be gone with the quickness, which is why you are right, 7th round pick is the best time to take fliers on these types… But as soon as they don’t hold up their end of the bargain, they have to go. it’s ok to give the right kid a second chance, but they don’t deserve a third
..
I don’t know either kid from adam, but I do think the Eagles take this serious enough to do their due dilligence on these type of kids
Low character= value this year in the eagles eyes
Jets took Peake
i guess jaiquawn left a bad taste in roosebud’s mouth..no temple kids
Think it was Reid who demanded that pick, overruled scouts. I read that somewhere.
Im more, surprised that chip DIDNT draft an Owl yet
Chip isn’t drafting anyone
TM’s character may have disqualified him from the Eagles’ 7th Rd board
FACK!
Redskins had a good draft.
Very good draft
yeaah their new GM aint messing around

Bye Kenny :/
Of the Eagles’ 5th to 7th draftees . . .
Hoping the guy who carries the biggest chip on his shoulder is J-Mills.
He’s the most talented. Also pretty big scumbag.
Explains free fall.
Sounding more like Cliff Harris.
Harris also was pretty bad athlete.
Mills is a legit NFL DB.
Same Mills who people were projecting as 1-2 rounder last year as our pick?
You mean Jallen Collins?
Yup. Thanks.
Jayron Kearse, Clemson Safety.
What’s he doing in 7th Rd?
All hype.
yeah I was pretty jacked about drafting him just based on his pedigree, measurables, and position..and then I actually watched him play. And decided I want him far away from my team
Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.
who’s the other Clemson safety?
Greene? maybe that’s who I’m thinking of.
Green went in the 2nd.
as CB I think, ran well.
Dawkins.
who the hell is that?
Richard Dawkins. Evolutionary biologist and famous atheist.
Humanist*
Thank you. Either way, doesn’t play the run well.
Yea Green was the other guy. He’s better than Kearse but that’s not saying much since Kearse isn’t even average.
Too bad. I was hoping we’d draft someone who looks like Jane and plays like Tarzan!
That’s why Dorenbos is still here
Jane more smart
He sucks. Watch last year’s Chip he was just awful. Both of the Safeties really.
MF’ING STEELERS

This is ridiculous
WR, LB or DT?
LB
Gronkowski with the final pick?
I’d rather try converting a DE.
Sean lee apparently had a minor knee surgery today just to show solidarity with jaylon smith
At this point they should just report when he’s not in surgery.
Eagles must be calling guys telling them that if they want to be pick 253 they better curbstomp a little old lady.
Roseman’s sending a message
With the 253rd overall pick, the Eagles select… D3FB, OG, Igglesblitz message board.
Edit: the only problem with this is we have the 251st pick. I can has eyesight.
Now you’re talkin’!!!!!
Oh god no.
My 15k signing bonus isn’t worth running another winsprint.
But think about the money after you make the 53! That must be worth at least a few windsprints.
I’d rather make 20k a year in the scouting department.
Teams are already scrambling trying to get UDFA’s…. Be nice to find a player that can stick on the roster
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if the Browns took Manziel again.
quick udfa mlb options??? anyone?..anyone?
Here we go. Future hall of gamer coming…
Eric Striker still available?
It’s John Striker . . . USMC
nah I’m talking about the LB for oklahoma..
You’re too low, Striker!
Of course Chip goes with royalty….
Scooby to Browns
Scooby gone. Ruh Roh.
Fits my thesis
The irony is that the Browns are a bit of a mystery machine…
Robby Anderson hasn’t been taken yet
He’s a borderline mini-camp invite not UDFA
Browns really seem to think production is undervalued.
Trade down?
Browns took Scooby.
Rut roh
Duckbias lives
Hahahaha
Joe Walker.
Roseman . . . smack!
DUCK BIAS
What do you know about Walker?
I think he was a Texas Ranger in the offseason.
All disagreements can be solved with Tai Kwondo
Didn’t watch him. Had universal UDFA grades, I don’t do much on those guys unless they have a unique trait. Oregon backers are typically smart an decent athletes.
No Oregon bias here
Alright I’ll be back in a couple hours after we get UDFAs
Oregon LB Joe Walker taken. Don’t know anything about him. Figure they thought their other targets they could get as UDFAs. Walker would probably go to SF or stay on West Coast.
First guy I know nothing at all about
Was graded pretty much undraftable… then ran out of the gym during the work out and became a 7th round project apparently.
Milk shakes!
Based on his nfl.com writeup, sounds like a ‘knows his role’ type LB. Not a great athlete, not as big as you’d like, but plays his assignment. Word that comes to mind is ‘average,’ but then I think Schwartz does prioritize guys who won’t freelance as that can lead to big plays against him running the wide-9 front as often as he does.
Howie straight trolling Chip right now.

After all those compensatory picks during today, is there really none in the 7th?
The comp picks are ridiculous. Stupid.
There is an absolute limit of compensatory picks awarded — usually 32, but 33 this year for some reason. If you only qualified for compensation in a later spot, no pick. This year, all compensatory slots were taken up before the 7th round, so no picks there.
Patriots losing a pick?
Maybe but three teams were docked picks this year. And it was 32 in the other year the Patriots were docked their 1st rounder, I think. The NFL changes the rules every so often though behind the scenes, so it’s probably impossible to know.
Did Harvard TE Braunecker get passed over?
I believe so
Cajuste?
Yes, him too. That one surprises me.
Unless he’s Mr. Irrelevant.
any reaction?

What do they see him in?
3rd best SPARQ among LBs.
For a guy who’s supposed to be a potential nickel-backer, sure got beat like a drum in coverage.
In 2 years, look out for Justin Watson.
There’s something kind of morbid about the Mr. Irrelevant thing. A whole town throws you a parade to say congratulations you don’t matter and you’ll probably never have a career.
The people of Newport Beach don’t need a parade to give off that vibe…
i love the fact that i hate this draft..it means it will turn out to be a good one
Need to be signing up UDFA at RB, FB, WR, DE, DT, ILB, and OLB. Given the somewhat easy path to making our roster at those spots, hope we can land some good ones.
I would have preferred higher upside guys at OL and less knuckleheads this draft. I have to say that we had a solid draft if Smallwood and Mills aren’t in jail in two years.
I mean taking upside safe character guys vs. higher upside risks is sort of the trade off.
Like Bradford
He demanded a trade off
nicely done
True but this isn’t like those guys got busted for weed or a DUI. Violence and hanging with the wrong people ruined guys more than weed/booze.
Targets besides Gause:
Trevor Coley, DT
Lawrence Thomas, DT
Devin Cajuste, WR/TE/H-B
Chris Brown, WR
Jared Norris, LB
William Ratelle, LB
FB from Southern Cal(his name is hard to spell)
First UDFA signing: Rutgers LB Quentin Gause
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2016/04/nfl_draft_2016_rutgers_lb_quentin_gause.html
Based on the nj.com writeup, sounds like a better player than their 7th rounder, Walker. Of course, that’s without having watched a down 😛
Could be better. Much higher chance to get a Rutgers guy to sign as udfa vs a west coast guy.
That could be the case. They probably knew they were going to be able to sign Gause as a UDFA… probably the Oregon lad was looking to sign with some west coast team. Draft him and then you get both.
Might be the first time I’ve heard an NFL LB referred to as a lad.

Surprised striker didnt get drafted…he made plays all over the field and seems like a good kid with a good attitude
Lacks scheme fit for most NFL teams.. Was pass rusher in college but only 5-11, 220 pounds. Best fit in zone blitz scheme like Giants or Panthers use.

Ha coming to follow his QB. Not sure i would be signing with the Eagles if i was a DB. Tough depth to fight through to get a roster spot. We may not have a no.1 CB but we have 10 no.4/5 guys lol.
Yeah, don’t see point of signing any CBs really unless we’re cutting/moving some of the CBs here. S depth is still somewhat thin though. Don’t know his size.

He will have to pull off a magic trick to unseat dorenbos
Dorenbos noticeably slipped last year.
Agree, just couldn’t resist the opportunity to make a bad dorenbos magician joke
Along with the entire team. Also, isn’t Dorenbos on the wrong side of 30 now?

Not on the radar of most but NFL.com(Lance Zierlein) rated Vaeao very highly, 123rd overall IIRC.
Thats a lot of vowels.
Destiny is a defensive tackle, or an exotic dancer?
I just hope he’s not both
Ha!
Destiny can’t be controlled.
Chip Kelly
Maybe both!
From an article on his pro day:

Vaeao’s monster vertical jump would have been topped all DTs at NFL Combine
Defensive tackle Destiny Vaeao said he felt good about his entire Pro Day work out, but his most eye popping stat came off the vertical jump, where his 35.5-inch leap would have been the best among all defensive tackles if he’d been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. And that’s saying something because this class of defensive linemen is widely considered to be the deepest in many years.
As it stands, Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche’s 35.0-inch vertical jump was the best mark recorded at the combine in February.
At Pro Day, Vaeao was measured as 6-foot-3 inches, and weighed 298 pounds. He managed a 9-foot broad jump, a 5.19 40 yard dash, and 27 reps on the 225-pound bench press.
Vaeao said Friday that the Colts, Jaguars and 49ers showed interest in him at Pro Day, and he had a phone interview with the New York Jets on Friday morning.
Between now and the NFL Draft, he plans to remain in Pullman training alongside fellow WSU NFL hopeful Darryl Paulo and said it was gratifying to be back with the entire team at the WSU football awards banquet on Thursday night.
“It’s been a ride together with the guys and the coaches and all the people that really helped me — the academic staff, the trainers, the equipment guys and my teammates,” said Vaeao, who was named the Leon Bender Award winner as the best defensive lineman from the 2015 season. “It was good to get that last get together and share that last moment with everybody, look back on good memories, watch some of the highlights. It’s something that’s gonna last forever.”
