A Big Back?

The Eagles have been checking out RBs the past couple of months. Dave Spadaro mentioned the other day the team could even spend a high pick on one. What are they looking for?

It looks like they want a big back. The team has shown interest in these players:

Sony Michel – 214 pounds
Nick Chubb – 227 pounds
Kalen Ballage – 228 pounds
Derrius Guice – 224 pounds
Rashaad Penny – 220 pounds
Nyheim Hines – 198 pounds
Jaylen Samuels – 223 pounds

We don’t actually know if they have interest in Hines. Duce Staley went to the NC State Pro Day. We don’t know if he was there more for Hines or Samuels.

You can argue that those are the top RBs and the Eagles are just checking out the best players. But there is one guy they haven’t shown interest in and that’s Ronald Jones, who is 204 pounds. He’s more of a speed guy.

With Jay Ajayi at 223 pounds and Corey Clement at 215 pounds, I wondered if the Eagles might want an explosive back like Jones. He can score any time he touches the ball. Ajayi and Clement are likely going to get caught from behind. That doesn’t happen to Jones.

I could be wrong and this could all be circumstantial. Or it could be that the Eagles are intentionally  hiding their interest in Jones to throw other teams off the scent.

In a couple of weeks, we’ll get a better feel for things based on who they pick and which RBs they pass on.

The Eagles are showing interest in one USC star.

I wasn’t sure what to make of him. Nwosu was 6-2, 245 at the Senior Bowl, which is more of a LB build. He’s now up to 251 pounds. Trent Cole had a similar situation, showing up to the Senior Bowl light and then getting bigger. He went from 235 to 243 to the mid-250’s. Cole was able to handle the extra weight.

Nwosu is a really fun player to watch. He was an edge rusher/LB at USC. Great motor. Good instincts. Very disruptive player. I think of him as a solid 2nd round pick.

Nwosu had 9.5 sacks in 2017. He had an amazing 13 pass deflections. He times his jumps very well and just has a good feel for how to get his hands on passes. That would be another way for the Eagles to combat QBs trying to make quick throws.
