Game Preview – NYG at PHI

We know the teams who will play on Sunday. We just don’t know which players will play. For the Giants, this is a case of resting starters in a game that can’t affect their playoff status. For the Eagles, this is a question of which injured players will be ready to play.

So it sounds like the Giants will be resting key starters. That’s the smart thing to do. There is a good chance the Giants will play the Vikings in the playoffs, a team they almost beat a few weeks back. Rest your key guys and be ready for that game. That’s more important than beating the Eagles in Week 18.

The big question is whether Jalen Hurts will start at QB. Nick Sirianni described him as “trending in the right direction”. That is as close to a yes as we’ll get.

The Eagles could roll the dice and start Gardner Minshew, hoping he would be able to beat the Giants backups. He probably could. But with so much on the line, the Eagles will play to win. They will put Hurts on the field. Even though the Eagles are favored by 14 points, they aren’t taking this game lightly. They have lost two games in a row. This is a must-win game.

Ideally, the Eagles will build a lead and then be able to put Minshew in the game. Of course we thought the Eagles might be able to build a lead last week and that didn’t turn out so well.

We’ll have to wait and see about CGJ and Quinn.

If CGJ comes back, there is the question of how the Eagles use him. Do they play him at safety or put him in the slot? Josiah Scott has been up and down as Avonte Maddox’s replacement. CGJ could be a big upgrade in the slot.

Quinn didn’t do much before getting injured. It would be nice to have him back with Josh Sweat coming off his neck injury from last week. I’m guessing Sweat will sit the game out. Give him extra rest and get him ready for the playoffs. Quinn could eat up some snaps and might have a chance to make his first play as an Eagle.

In the first game, the Eagles ran for 253 yards. Hurts was 7-77 on the ground and a key factor. I hope they plan to run the ball a lot on Sunday, with the RBs of course. Limit the hits on Hurts. Let the OL attack the Giants and feed the ball to Sanders/Scott/Gainwell. Heck, may Trey Sermon active and give him some carries.

The Eagles want to win this game and also clean up some things. This would be a great week for a crisp performance. The last two weeks have been sloppy, on offense and defense.

The Giants might be without LT Andrew Thomas. They gave up 7 sacks in the first game, with him playing. The Eagles pass rush could be a major issue for the Giants. There is a good chance Tyrod Taylor will be at QB so his mobility could neutralize some of the pass rush.

I am curious to see how Sunday plays out. Last year the Eagles sat players in the finale against Dallas. The Eagles offense put up 26 points, but Dak Prescott and Dallas put up 51. The Eagles defense looked like this:

Ryan Kerrigan DE
Raequan Williams DT
Milton Williams DT
Hassan Ridgeway DT
JaCoby Stevens LB
Patrick Johnson LB
Shaun Bradley LB
Zech McPhearson CB
Kary Vincent Jr. CB
K’Von Wallace S
Andre Chachere S

That is an amazingly non-descript group. Milton Williams was far and away the best player on the field. Yikes.

Dallas lit up that bunch and had a lot of fun doing it, but then put up only 17 points in the playoff loss to SF. Beating a cobbled together lineup doesn’t mean a thing, beyond the benefits of the win in the standings. That said, it would be nice to see the Eagles play well. The defense didn’t show up in the Dallas loss. The offense didn’t show up in the Saints loss. It would be good to see both units show up on Sunday.

Nick Sirianni preaches a message of consistency. That means the Eagles can’t get too worked up on the losing streak. If they try to do too much, that can lead to mistakes. Still, they need to fix mistakes.

I never would have guessed the Giants would be the team resting players, but here we are. This should be an interesting end to a wild regular season.
