Incomplete

The Eagles are 8-1, the best record in the NFL. They also haven’t won a game by more than 14 points. Five of their wins are by a touchdown or less. This is a good team, but they aren’t dominating opponents.

Winning in the NFL is hard and shouldn’t be taken for granted. At the same time, winning games and winning championships aren’t the same thing. KC played plenty of close games last  year. They also won three games by 18 or more points (three possessions). One of those big wins came against the Niners. The Chiefs showed you they could play a complete game, even against a really good team.

With a record of 8-1 we know the Eagles are a good team. But how good? As Jason Kelce talked about recently, the Eagles haven’t played a complete game yet. We’ve seen a great running game at times. Great passing attack in others. Stifling run defense for most of the year. Dominant pass rush at times. We just haven’t seen them play a complete game, one where they dominated on both sides of the ball.

The upcoming schedule will be a great test for them.

@ KC
BUF
SF
@ DAL
@ SEA

I don’t know if the Eagles can go through that and expect to win while playing up and down. They need to play good football. They need to play complete games. That isn’t to say they’ll blow those teams out, but they might need complete games just to win.

Nick Sirianni and his players are right to point out that you don’t want to peak in September or October. But you do need to show progress. We’ve seen some of that. The Eagles have definitely gotten better in the red zone. They didn’t turn the ball over against Dallas. We’ll see if they can build on that.

The defense had a good 3-game stretch (246 yards, 17 points per game). The last two weeks they got lit up for more than 440 yards and 27 points per game. That has to change or the Eagles will be adding some L’s to their record. To be fair, there have been a lot of changes to the back seven. If that group stabilizes now and comes together, the defense could be much better down the stretch.

I’ve said all year long that the focus is on doing whatever it takes to win the Super Bowl. Playing tough games is a great way to get ready for the postseason. It would be nice if the games were spread out, but then again you have to beat multiple good teams in a row to win in the playoffs so maybe it is better this way.

One encouraging aspect of the defense is that they have beaten good QBs this year.

Kirk Cousins
Matt Stafford
Tua Tagovailoa
Dak Prescott

We can argue about your definition of good, but Cousins was playing the best football of his career. Stafford got off to a good start this year, but hasn’t been the same since the Eagles game. Tua and Dak are both putting up strong numbers this season.

Last year the Eagles beat Cousins, Trevor Lawrence and Aaron Rodgers. Cousins and Rodgers were having down years compared to other seasons. Lawrence is talented, but wasn’t exactly lighting it up early last year when the Eagles beat him. The Eagles lost to the two best QBs they did face, Dak and Patrick Mahomes.

Games against Mahomes and Josh Allen will give us more ideas about what this team might be able to do in the postseason.

The Eagles pass rush is fourth in the NFL in sacks with 30. It is impressive that they have come up with critical sacks. None was bigger than Josh Sweat getting Dak last week. Enjoy this compilation of all 30 sacks from this year.

Sweat has developed into a special pass rusher. He turned out to be a great draft pick by Howie and the scouts. Well done.
