Eagles Trade for a WR

Receiver depth was a key question going into the summer. Young players like Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson and Darius Cooper all played well, which eased some of the concerns. Still, Wilson and Cooper have a combined five career catches so adding veteran depth made some sense.

Boom.

Metchie was drafted in 2022, but missed that season for medical reasons after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Metchie came back in 2023. He’s played in 29 of 34 possible games over the past two seasons. Metchie has 40 catches for 412 yards and 1 TD. Why would Houston give up on a talented young WR? They have excellent depth at the position and needed to trade someone.

Howie Roseman knew they had a crowded WR room so he was able to get a good deal.

Bryant had little to no chance to make the Eagles. Swapping Day 3 picks is fine since the Eagles have so many picks in the upcoming draft. Moving down won’t be a big deal.

I don’t think Metchie will push Dotson for the #3 spot right away. Dotson knows the offense and has good chemistry with Jalen Hurts. Metchie will need to learn the system and work on building chemistry with the QBs.

Metchie has a thin build at 6-1, 187, but he is tough and willing to work the middle of the field. He looks to have good hands and can be a good route runner. Here are some highlights from a game last year. You can get a feel for what he can do.

I don’t think this trade affects Wilson or Cooper. They’ve played well enough to earn roster spots. It does hurt Ainias Smith. He’s done some good things, but hasn’t played so well that he locked up a spot.

Metchie is under contract for 2024 and will be an RFA next season because he wasn’t able to play as a rookie. That makes Metchies valuable to the Eagles from a financial perspective. Dotson will be a UFA next year. Metchie could step in as the #3 receiver at a reasonable price.

The Eagles passing game has had issues when AJ Brown and/or DeVonta Smith gets hurt. Adding a player like Metchie should help that situation moving forward. He can play in the slot or outside. He and Dotson can team with Brown or Smith to still give the team a good trio.

Really smart move by Howie. He gives up very little, but adds a player with both experience and potential. The Eagles are now a deeper, more talented team.
