Fun Diversion – Dumb Plays

Jimmy over at Blogging The Beast put up a post on the 5 dumbest NFC East plays of the last 20 years.

His list is solid.  It got me to wondering if he missed any good ones.  Here’s a couple I came up with.

1999 Bucs at Eagles – The Eagles got into position to try a FG, I think it was late in the half.  Everything looked good except one thing.  There were only 10 players on the field.  The guy missing?  PK Norm Johnson.  That made for an odd moment.

1997 Giants / Skins – QB Gus Frerotte got excited after running for a short TD.  Frerotte celebrated by head-butting the stadium wall.  He injured his neck and had to go to the hosptial at halftime.  The game ended in a 7-7 tie.

2006 Bucs at Eagles – Donovan McNabb completed a short pass to TE L.J. Smith in the Red Zone late in the 1st half.  The problem, the Eagles were out of timeouts and Smith was stopped short of the endzone.  The Eagles gave up 3 free points in a game that they lost on a last second 62-yard FG.

We certainly could nominate Felix Jones for his bonehead play last week.  He caught a pass late in the game on 4th/20 and stepped out of bounds after about 10 yards.  Apparently he forgot what down it was.

You guys got some other nominations?

“Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. Placeholder Tommy Hutton bobbles the snap on a chip-shot Chris Bonoil field goal, as time wore out on a 21-20 Dallas Cowboys win on a Monday night game in 1997.”

This was in fact one of the few times when I cried…

Donovan McNabb’s inexplicable pick-six to Roy Williams in 2005. If he does ANYTHING besides throw a pick-six on that play, the Eagles likely go on to win the game. The loss itself pretty much buried them and the already-injured McNabb was knocked out for the season on the play.

    I HATED THIS PLAY!!!

    Great choice!!!

Brandon Jacobs trying to jump over Chris Gocong to get a few extra yards, even after he had enough for a first down. Gocong ended up forcing a fumble and the Eagles recovered.

Andy’s decision to punt on a 4th-9 in the divisional game vs. New Orleans. I thought it was dumb since our defense was not good enough to stop the run and was struggling all game.

Jeff Garcia spiking the football after running for the first down against NYG. It took us out of FG position and almost cost us the game.

    DUMBEST MOVE EVER:

Jerome McDougle on a 4th and 28, gets a face mask call and then kicks the flag to give the Bucs 30 yards in penalties. Bucs kick a FG late in the game and end up winning by 2 points.

    Funniest moment:

Cowboys vs. Saints 2006: There are less that two minutes left in the first half and the Saints get a first down on a play in which (I believe) the ball hit the ground before the receiver caught it. Parcells challenges the call and gets the play overturned, BUT the refs call a 15 yard penalty on the Cowboys for throwing a flag with less than two minutes left in the first half.

Um – Tommy – what about the 3 and 1 play this week where Ronnie Brown gets stopped in the backfield and decides to spike/throw the ball as he goes down – I had never seen anything like that before – the most intentional fumble ever, right?

If we had kicked a field goal there we win the game…isn’t it crazy how there are like 10 different plays from that game that if we didn’t mess up we would have won? The final Maclin fumble, this fumble I just mentioned, both missed filed goals, Desean Jackson falling down at midfield cuz the defender touched his leg when Vick went over the top…the list goes on and on…that is by far the closest game we have lost in a long long time…

OK I am depressed now – so I have to add one of my favorite bonehead plays/depth chart issues of all time. Final week of the regular season about 5 years ago – Dallas playing in Seattle for a playoff spot. Dallas is down by 7. Romo puts together a beautiful drive and they get a TD as time winds down…BUT, Romo was also the holder on kicking units that year – so he is all excited about his big drive and the overtime quarter that he is sure is about to start that he messes up on the hold and tries to run for 2 – stopped at the one…game/season/and Romo as holder DONE in an instant…man, that was the worst play that made me the happiest…DALLAS SUCKS!!!

    Divisional game vs. New Orleans:

Its the 3rd and 2. Jeff Garcia scrambles outside of the pocket and is about to run for the first down. There is open field in front of him and the nearest defender is about 7 yards away. As he is running he stops right before the line of scrimmage and throws a pass to Donte Stallworth who is triple covered. The ball is swatted away and the Eagles have to punt.

    Two words: Dwayne Rudd.

Should be #1 on this list, actually.

    Also, Burress’s spike.

But those are a couple of classics.

Desean’s dropping the ball on the one yard line during the Monday Night game against Dallas in 2008. Would have been his first td.
