DeMarco to Visit Philly

The Eagles agreed to terms on a deal with RB Ryan Mathews. Jimmy Bama has some details on that here. So the question becomes…can you sign Mathews and Murray? Should you sign them both?
The deal with Mathews has not yet been signed. It is possible the Eagles could try to back out of that. After all, Frank Gore did the same thing to the team just a couple of days ago. But I don’t think teams do that often.
I think Murray would be a terrific fit in the Eagles offense. He is a downhill runner that goes through first contact. He has excellent strength and balance. The big worry with him is how much the 2013 workload will affect him moving forward.
Since 2000, 4 guys have carried the ball over 390 times in a season: DeMarco, Larry Johnson, Eddie George and Ricky Williams.

Williams, George and Johnson had limited success after those years. Can DeMarco break that trend?
There is a big difference. Johnson had 336 carries the year before he had 416. George averaged 340 carries in the 4 years prior to his busiest season. Williams had 313 and 383 carries in the years leading up to his workhorse year. Those backs were getting used an unhealthy amount.
Murray had 164, 161 and 217 carries before last year. There should be plenty of tread left on his tires. I don’t dispute that Dallas overused him last year, but that was an anomaly. In the past, either he was hurt or they wouldn’t commit to the run.
If the price is right, I love the thought of adding Murray.
Could you add Murray and Matthews, while also paying good money to Darren Sproles? Maybe, but that would be a less than ideal use of resources. I’m all for splitting up carries, but that should also mean splitting up cost. Mathews was supposed to get $4M per year. That’s not backup RB money.
The Saints have been one team that successfully used a trio of RBs over the years. Usually one of them was a young guy making little money.
It is possible this is all posturing by Murray and his agent to get Dallas to pay him something reasonable. Or maybe to squeeze a big deal out of the Raiders. Free agency is a big game, and there are millions of dollars on the line. Sometimes you have to get creative.
I don’t want to make too much of this until Murray actually signs somewhere and we find out the cost. Looks like Thursday will be another interesting day.

My guess is he would prefer to stay in Dallas, but is trying to force the issue to get what he wants by coming here. So it comes down to whether Dallas ups their offer enough to the same range that the Eagles are offering.
Agree. I think we win either way. Jerry will have to pay more than he wants to get him; if not we will make Dallas suffer twice a year.

The question is, can Dallas really afford to retain him? Also how high are they on Randle? With limited opportunities he looked pretty good. Keep in mind it’s a deep RB class also.

If this does happen it goes to say that nobody has any clue of what Chip wants to do, and that we can’t just look at one thing and start bashing. Yes I am including myself because over the course of 2 days I went from loving him, to hating him, to possibly loving him again. Well we are giving him Spray Tan, have one of the best run blocking OLs since that OL. Now we just need our own Michael Irvin type WR.
I think the defense will be much better next year. The Eagles front 7 is loaded right now.
One angle to this is that whatever likelihood there is of bundling Bradford for Mariota goes down when you sign DeMarco, because a main reason for Murray to sign here would be to reunite with Bradford. If the Eagles are exploring all their options, then they may have to roll with this, which makes Bradford want Murray’s help to keep him from being dealt to a bad team. Bradford/ Murray v. Mariota, fewer picks, and low cost RBs this year – Chip would make a stronger impression this year with the former, which gives Murray a chance to give Bradford that help.
Package Murray and Bradford, old roomies, and trade for Titan’s or Jaguar’s or Oakland’s #1 pick. Throw in Cooper.There you go . The Dream (for some folks, anyway) comes true.
Don’t know whether they’re allowed to trade Murray so fast, but they can throw in Vince Young’s cleats and Andy’s unopened mustard bottles.

I think the problem with signing Murray is simple: If it is at a price we should be comfortable paying, Dallas would match it. I would not want to touch him after the way they ran him into the ground last year and his injury history. I hope this is just to get them to pay him more.

I was and still am not in favor of this trade, but I’m starting to be swayed slightly. Maybe Chip Kelly really is smarter than everybody else and Bradford will excel. We just have to keep our fingers crossed with the injuries.
Also. the Rams receivers absolutely BLOW. Drop after drop after drop.
In that video can 100% see what Kelly likes about him. He has great arm talent.
Not to mention his mechanics, footwork and going through his progressions and feel for the pocket. I keep hearing that Foles to Bradford is a lateral move but Bradfod’s QB skills are more advanced than Foles in direct relation to their draft position. (And that’s not a knock on Foles.) Chip just has to keep feeding him that special ligament smoothie…. 🙂
Seems like nothing happened until Lloyd showed up, and then there were fireworks. That game where he made (young) Patrick Peterson look like a scrub was impressive.
I think equally important is that every single third down play in the Washington game, he was taking a hit. That will kill your accuracy numbers.
I don´t get me wrong. I don´t hate the signing of Murray if it comes. Just hate the mess they put them selfes into. First of all let´s start with Mathews. This guy goes to IR while signing his contract is the joke going aroung. But there is enough to warrant this judgement.
He has never finished a season without staying out of the game for an extend time. In 2013 he almost did but he was benched because he was so banged up. He is injury prone and this won´t go away. And he has 1.100 touches on his broken tires. They won´t go away as well. And he is RB-old. Older then Shady. He turns 28 this year.
Let´s turn the picture to our QB system. Man I loved Kelly when he said: If you have two you don´t have one. Yesterday he said: “Sam and Marc are our QBs” . That hurt and lost a huge part of confidence. But let´s go on from this. How much are we paying those guys? 13M for Sam and another 5.5 for Marc? Wow that´s a whooping 18.5M for two #2. And we even pay more then then the Patriots and Broncos do. We pay elite money to our QBs. But split it up.
I have to go on to the shild warrior ( I stole the shild from him and he wasn´t fast to get after me). He`s over thirty and you are betting on him to recover from this ACL and be back in 2015 as his same old? It´s not my cap but it´s just plain stupid stupid we had to get rid of Shady to sign Maxwell. You just cut DeMeco and you easily sign Maxwell. And don´t bring up Kiko. He´s on his second ACL. Won´t be back before camp. My guess is he will be on PUP starting the season. And he won´t contribute much this season. But anyhow that´s not going to be my point. Did you all forget about guys like Blue Eye Stew? Loved the guy. He was up and coming. But after his injury he was done. Cornelius Ingram – Young athletic TE and never came back from his injury. Shall I go on? No you get the point. We are betting our 2015 future on players who have a less then likely chance to contribute. But we get rid of those who stay healthy? Just don´t get it. So back to the RB situation. We pay on 1.5M (Polk), another 5M (Sproles), 5M Mathews. That´s elite RB money on 3 RBs. You spend the money but you spread it around. I don´t like the concept. Would have prefered to cut Sproles and DeMeco to keep Shady. Or never sign this Mathews kid.
So let´s bring on Murray for 8-10M or so per year. Pay him like Shady and tell me with a straight face that you traded #25 because of the cap.

Alright since we’re not being linked to other guys besides trying to sign anyone except for Murray for the foreseeable future, it’s time to focus on the draft. Mariota is not happening. Hundley could happen if he falls.

Jaelen Strong – Philly kid, he’s very similar to Alshon Jeffery
Devante Parker – He gets a lot of comparisons to Hakeem Nicks but he’s more similar to the GB WRs like Adams/Nelson.
TJ Clemmings – A better run blocker than pass pro at this point. Good athlete with a high ceiling but not not quite on Lane’s level. He’ll spend his time at the right side of the OL.
Jake Fisher – pretty much tailor made for Chip’s zone blocking scheme but some people may think this is too high for him
Trae Waynes – A pipe dream at this point. Thurmond was signed but you can’t pass up on a great CB prospect.
Dorial Green-Beckham – He has everything but the brains. If DGB gets his head right and can be persuaded into living 10 years without doing anything stupid then he has a good chance to be a poor man’s Calvin Johnson.
Todd Gurley – Crazy to suggest right? If Chip wants him then from a talent standpoint you can’t really argue against it. Gurley has tremendous potential and RB is one of the easier positions to produce in.
Jalen Collins – raw but has the size and coverage skills that Chip likes.

Byron Jones – Questionable competition but he might be the complete package. What he runs at his pro day might make him the 3rd CB to be taken in the draft.
DJ Humpries – This guy can move. He has technique issues but the athleticism is there. Major medical red flags though. He could be a higher pick like Jones if a team feels like he passes team physicals.
Phillip Dorsett – He’s small but he is dynamite. We’ve seen what Djax can do but Dorsett is tougher than Djax and probably less of a headache.
Duke Johnson – Duke is explosive. He doesn’t go down without a fight and he can catch. He needs to work on pass protection and fumbles a bit more than you like. Medical red flags. Had injuries in 2013/2014

-Strong reminds me more of a more aerial Jordan Matthews (as fast as they need to be, good not great hands, workhorse recievers)
-Parker is a raw AJ Green
-Gurley needs year to rehab, don’t know that you take that at 20, some team will take him top 40 for sure though
-Don’t see Chip going for DGB
-If Dupree gets to 15, go get him. Makes our front 7 best in the league.
-Jones will run low 4.4 or better based on film, he is my CB3, in play at 20, only flaw is he can get a bit panicky w/ ball in air, but wouldn’t be forced into PT early
-Humphries terrifies the hell out of me. Some decent tape, but when Mizzou gets up on Florida big and Ray gets to pin his ears back for an entire half, it’s ugly. You’d like to see him hang in a bit better for a guy people think is an LT.
-I have a late first grade on Sambraillo, but he probably needs to play in a zone scheme, so may fall to 52.
-Ameer is my dream back for us
-Johnson is a home run threat on every play, but can he work between the tackles for 3,4,5 unsexy yards on 2nd and 8?
-Coleman isn’t dynamic but he’s a slasher. Can break an arm tackle or two but won’t push the pile, can find a seam and house it but won’t make something out of nothing. Needs to play in a one cut scheme as he struggles when he tries to dance. Steady. Not RB1 but could lead a stable.
DJ Humphries – would we even project him to ever play LT? i mean we have Lane in the future for that and Peters now. How realistic is it to get him to come in and play guard first season?
I think all 4 of the ‘big pass rushers’ would be in play as OLB’s in the draft if they slide, and because i think all 4 would be better suited to the 3-4 i think there is a chance 1 slides down to the late teens, and i assume we would have to have interest.
The other player i want badly is Parker – special talent in my opinion, who could fall all the way to 20 if we are lucky.

I don’t think Dupree gets past Atlanta but by some miracle if it does happen then trade up asap.

I wouldn’t touch Gurley after we signed Murray. Ameer seems more likely at this point.
Jones looks smooth while moving though. He seems like a nice guy and hasn’t had any off the field issues. Combine that with his H/W/S that sounds very much like a Chip guy.
I think Duke is average at going up the gut. He’ll thrive as the 2nd back in a 1-2 punch combo.
I don’t know where he fits. I’ve seen glimpses of stuff from him, but I don’t get him. Some guys have him as a late first round LT prospect. He’s just so underweight and doesn’t have the pop to play guard.
My prediction right now is that Chip will address OG in round 1 with a guy who could kick out to RT in the future.

I really don’t think Scherff will be there at 20 but Fisher might be. Perriman and Coates have the dropsies but I don’t blame Chip on taking a gamble on those guys. I think Chris Conley might be a better value even if he doesn’t have the same YAC ability like Coates.
By trading foles to St. Louis the eagles better their chances to get Mariotta by essentially eliminating a qb needy team who had a better trade position to move up for him… If he does get passed the jets at 6 he could fall alot further making it alot easier to get him… Look at the draft pick order now and you can see that after jets the next team who could actually draft him is Houston… And the eagles can jump to ten or twelve to snatch him up… Or even with the texans…

He flicks it around 45 yards with pin point accuracy in the move, only a handful of QBs in the NFL right now can make that throw.
Now if he can just clean up some of the mental part and stay healthy, I feel a lot better about Bradford than I did about Foles or Sanchez

Anyone who has any questions about his physical talent does not know anything about football. People remember the dink and dunk at the Rams and they forget he has a rifle arm.
However it all comes down to decision making and feel of the game – if he can develop that side he can be a top 5 QB. If not he is going to fail here like he did at the Rams

Think there’s a pretty big commitment difference between a backup QB on a one year deal and trading picks and your starting QB for someone.
I didn’t realize that Bradford and Murray played together at Oklamoma. Now the last minute Murray interest makes more sense…I mean “culture” and all that.

Reminds me of Damon of the Red Sox. He was a free agent and the Yankees called him. He went and visited, as a ploy, and got an offer. He called the Red Sox and said to please just match the offer. No call back so he simply signed with the Yankees. He tried the in-division rivalry. Didn’t get what he wanted but was still a rich man….
I like the parallel, mainly because we are the Yankees in this situation and the Yankees won a world series with Damon. That means if Murray signs with the Eagles, we will win the Superbowl, right?

I really hope we get Murray because he is great, and because Matthews isn’t going to take up the slack resulting from Shady leaving. For that matter, I’m surprised by the lack of love Shady is getting in a lot of posts. Maybe it’s a stage of grief, “Not going to miss him, he wasn’t perfect, anyway…” The guy had 3000 yds rushing over the past two years, including working behind the wreck of an injured line last year, and was a matchup nightmare for DCs.

DeMarco is looking at the contract Shady got in Buffalo — five years/$40m — and is going to want that kind of money, too. If a team wants an elite rb, it’s pay the money or settle for Ryan Matthews.

I might be in the minority, but I think the top rbs are worth $8m/year to most teams, including the Eagles.

We have to see how it plays out, but if Murray is seriously considering us (or the Cowboys), I think it speaks volume about his competitive nature.
After what Dallas did to him, I couldn’t say anything against signing with the Raiders for 8m (maybe more, because well, it’s the Raiders) for 5 years. If we are offering 6, that’s 10m total over 5 years. You have to think he won’t sign another contract in his life after those 5 years.
I think I would cash in, to be perfectly honest. If he wants to come to Philly or stay in Dallas, he wants his cash, but he also wants to win a SB.

I was busting on Shady during the season. I may be irrationally fixated, but I still have visions of his performance vs SF where he refused to take the easy yards that D dared him to take, and consistently put his injured, struggling QB in 3rd and longs. The fact that he later in the season padded his stats against weak defenses didn’t erase that.
Shady’s a good back. But his style is better suited for running against weak defenses. Need a one cut and go, slightly powerish back to complement him. But you’re not going to have a RB by committee when you’re paying a guy the money Shady’s getting.

Am I the only one starting to buy into Bradford trade. I know it was 5 years ago but at the time many scouts thought that he was a can’t miss prospect. Him and Murray plus a high round draft pick receiver with Chips offensive genius = another great year on offense.

one thing i like is that he didnt tear up his ACL just running, or makingh a cut and it just happened…. his acl’s were the result of perfectly placed hits to his knee that would have caused the same injury to any man… i like that better then a guy whos knees give out just running around untouched making cuts he always makes..
I would actually feel worse if he had shoulder issues. He is not a running QB anyway. He just needs to stand in the pocket and throw, so unless he has the very rare third ACL injury, he will be fine. And a good line will help . Need to upgrade RG spot, likely with a high draft pick.

I think we’re warming up to the player but most of us still think the cost was way too high. I’m at the point where I probably could get behind a straight up Foles-Bradford swap. Losing the 2nd is what stings.

Good analogy but not exactly the same…lottery can have 1 in hundreds of millions off odds. I think the odds for Bradford are a little better than winning the lottery, so a 2nd round pick is a reasonable risk

Thing is this community is a pretty positive bunch, and there are positives (Chip is not totally insane). I think we will see where we stand in September but there is a chance this is a great move (the debate is how good a chance it is).
I guess in my mind Bradford has about a 1/3 chance of overcoming his limitations and becoming a great QB, and i guess that is worth a 2nd round pick and Foles.

I think the initial reaction is related to something Tommy said in the last post. Kelly is touted as a genius. Fans want to think they can figure out what Kelly is thinking, because that would mean the fan has a good football mind as well. So, when Kelly does something completely unexpected, some of those fans think that Kelly must be crazy, or stupid, or trying to sabotage the team, because the alternative is the fan admitting that they don’t know as much as they think. This is a hard realization, and fans come to grips with it at different rates.
I think his press conference REALLY settled everyone down.
Especially about a team offering a 1st for him. It either keeps the Mariota dream alive for those who want or at the very least reassures us that Chip does have some decent concept of asset valuation in the NFL.
Kelly was very smart yesterday. Graham was supposed to talk first ,but Kelly came up and answered the questions. Seeing how pumped up Brandon was, with his presser , had a great effect on a lot of people. That does not happen, if he speaks first.
I think the biggest problem was the initial report that we were swapping first rounders in the trade. Everyone got excited that we were moving up in the first round. But when the actual trade was revealed, it was such a let down and everyone got pissed.

I think this is the most overlooked but valid point in this whole kabuki dance. We have been comparing what we thought the trade was (due to half-assed, twitter reporting / shame on us for paying that close attention) to what the trade actually is.
Fans were on-board with Kelly getting his guy. Everyone thought it was Mariota. It turns out to be Bradford. These guys are equal in terms of skill assessment and risk. Both are Heisman winners, have great football minds running hyper-tempo offenses, made it to the college championship game, and are / will be top 10 picks. Mariota is more athletic and Bradford has been successful (offensive rookie of the year, great 7 game stretch) at the NFL level. Mariota’s risk is the same inherent with being a college QB. Will he be successful in the NFL. Bradford’s is will his body hold up to the rigors of the NFL.
So if we are on-board with Kelly getting his guy, we should be happy he got a guy that cost the Eagles so much less than Mariota. A 3rd round QB who is not who Kelly wants, a 2 and a 4. The Eagles traded a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick for a 1st round QB and a 5th round pick. **AND** if he is not good enough to start or has an injury, the Eagles get a 4th or 3rd round pick back.
Kelly got his guy for a good price with respect to getting pick #2 or #6 **AND** got insurance if he does not pan out.
Eh, the most attractive thing about signing Murray would be weakening a division rival. Note that his career year came about because the Cowboys’ offensive line was more healthy and talented than they have been in years. If the Eagles give him serious money and don’t sign a safety it’s a bad move. I think you could get comparable performance with Polk, Mathews, Sproles, and a rookie for a lot less money. I hope Oakland signs Murray and Jerry Jones completely destroys his financials by overpaying for Adrian Peterson.
Also, keep in mind that ACL tears, for the most part, are freak I injuries and have nothing to do with being fragile or not. Maclin has 2 and we all wanted him back…no one was
calling him a glass man. The linebacker from Carolina has had 3 ACL tears and is still playing at a high level. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen again, but also doesn’t mean it will.

I really think Murray, when healthy, is the best back in the NFL. AP has alot of miles and I believe he does not have Murray’s open field speed anymore. Don’t get me wrong, AP 3 years ago was scary. Murray actually scared the heck out of me last year, as much as I didn’t want to say it out loud. I just kept thinking he would get hurt, but he never did. And as much as I also wanted to hate him, he seemed really classy. I also did not like to say that out loud. It helps keep my hatred burning strong to think all of the Cowboys are punks like Dez Bryant. I try not to think of the Cowboys actually having good kids that play for the team like, Demarcus Ware, Witten or Murray.

So, after I went through the 4 phases of grief, I can finally accept the Bradford trade. I still think (a) Chip paid too much, (b) the risk of a third, then career ending huge injury is high and (c) the cap hit is way too high.
But, well, whan can we do about that?
Chip is a good seller, he should do more PCs to get the fans on board. He’s not revealing something he doesn’t want, but it helps, imho.
I’m at least accepting the Bradford move because Chip said he watched all of Bradfords NFL throws. Since Shurmur was the OC on the team that drafted him, he should have watched every throw in College.
Chip talked with Dr. James Andrews about the injury. I hope there is a chance from a medical standpoint of Bradford staying healthy.
They paid too much and if he’s injured, again, we’re stuck with Sanchez. But if he stays healthy, maybe, maybe we have a QB. I trust Chip as a coach, so I just hope for the best.
I think in a way Chip is like Hinkie who says the NBA is all about the star player. Chip might think without his QB (performing at some high level, if not elite), he can’t win. So better to spend a 2nd and see if Bradford is the guy than to sit with Foles if you believe he can’t do it. And if not, churn the QB position again.
I said during the season that Kelly already knew whether Foles was his guy or not, regardless of the fact that he missed half the season, and that this offseason was going to answer that question either way. So I was okay with moving on, I just felt that the 2nd, plus taking on all that salary, was a bad use of resources. I understand the risk aspect, and this could definitely work out as a steal, but the fact that no one else was blowing our offer out of the water for Bradford means that there is a significant risk that the 2nd is a purely wasted asset. I’m in the ICWTFN camp, but I can’t say that criticism of the trade is irrational.

I think Hinkie has found gold on his method of roster building. Obviously he needs to see some results from that first, but I think he’s on the right track. The problem is that roster building isn’t the only thing at stake. Having a shitty team doesn’t mean your team goes bankrupt–The Bills and Raiders still have plenty of fans. That’s because the fans are emotionally invested in the team and the players more so than the quality of the team. If you’re shipping out your star player year after year after year, the fans don’t connect to them, and they tune it out. We have to stick with somebody eventually, right?
Owners have long known that fan cheer for the laundry. Having a celebrity player helps with profile but fans stick with a team even if its full of scrubs.
Look at the Phillies -possibly the worst franchise in professional sports history -but they still make mountains of cash for the ownership even when they stink (which is the statistically accurate 75% of the time).

I think the Texans would like to draft up from the second round into the end of the 1st (while Belichick will gladly accept the offer) and pick Petty. Could be a O’Brien kind of QB.
Chip might only need to trade Barkley and a 4th to move back to 26.

The Packers didn’t go out and give up a pick for someone to play while Rodgers waited. He sat there behind Brett Favre.
We have Bradford and Sanchez to start the year. If issues necessitate him starting later in the year, so be it. If not, then we are doing well.
It’s not about wasting a pick, it’s about putting what he thinks is his best opportunity to win now and down the road. He likes Bradford now, and Hundley/Petty down the road.
If he thinks he’s got a gem, then go for it.

My bad. For some reason I thought Flynn was a trade. I think we agree on the price, but even with drafting a Petty or Hundley, have to acknowledge that there’s a chance that Bradford’s “the guy.” Probably a better chance than there was with Flynn. But given his history, far from a certain thing. Additionally, Petty and Hundley are both guys that could benefit from some time on the pine in the NFL – again, the price is somewhat troubling, but Bradford could serve some value there.
And then there’s that feeling I have – Kelly’s view of draft picks is significantly different from the mainstream.

My initial anger was based on valuing Foles more than Bradford, mostly based on results, though it looks like other teams still value the potential in Bradford’s physical abilities. And if Kelly saw something in Foles which he didn’t think could be corrected, this whole thing makes sense. But Kelly wants a QB and that may mean having more options.

do we really think Chip has decided who to take int he first round already? He seems oh about 1,000 more times analytical than that. People are just guessing so they can claim fame if they are right and there’s no downside to being wrong.

A great QB is the rarest player in sports. There are maybe 5 of them at any given time. IMO, there’s maybe 15 guys that are truly “starting caliber,” with all the other teams generally flailing around trying to find their guy.
Chip is playing the odds. Take a bunch of shots on goal to find a great QB.
Kelly has gone 20-12 in two years with Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley, and Matt Sanchez. Can you imagine if he had a real QB?
Maybe it’s Bradford. He’s easily the most talented of all those guys.
Maybe its Bryce Petty or Brett Hundley. But I don’t think Chip will stop drafting QBs he likes until he has (1) A true FRANCHISE QB, and (2) A high-level back up.
If the worst case is that we have three QBs that are capable of starting in the NFL, then you have some real assets to move.

I tend to agree with you. Don’t get the Sanchez re-signing though. He probably views him as insurance, in the case of: well, we all know he can’t start, but he’s a good back-up.
But in Kellys mind, he could draft 2 QBs who have a chance to develop if he doesn’t re-signs Sanchez. We all know Sanchez will never, ever be Franchise QB. Even in this QB friendly Offense.
Yeah, but he’s a functional back-up. From an allocation resource standpoint, you’re happy to have him at his price.
He’s easily one of the best back-ups in the NFL, right?
Well, the question is, would other QBs be as capable Back-ups IN THIS SYSTEM for a lower price? But yes, for a back-up, he played well.

If Chip is willing to make McCourty the highest paid Safety in the league (same region as Earl Thomas), he has to think that there is a problem at the S position. Even if you don’t LOVE any other FA S, since the draft is weak, you better get at least someone talented. You can get rid of him if you don’t like him long term, but you have to adress the position for the 2015 season. We’re no way close of having an legitimate starter next to Jenkins.

Assuming Cleveland offered the 1st at No. 19 . . .
that would make Foles the equivalent of a late 1st or mid-level 2nd Rd pick — depending on how you value the Eagles 2016 2nd Rd pick.
Using the trade chart, if the Rams valued the Eagles 2016 2nd at its 2015 value, then — after doing the math on the picks — Foles comes out mid-tier 2nd.
If, as teams reportedly do, the Rams valued the Eagles’ 2016 2nd as a 2015 3rd this year . . . then Foles’s value is an end-of-the-round 1st.
So in 2015 draft pick terms — to obtain Bradford — the Eagles traded the 31st pick in Rd 1, a 3rd rd pick at No. 116, and swapped their 4th for the Rams 5th.
(These values, again, are based on the assumption that Cleveland offered the 19th pick in the 2015 draft for Bradford.)

Of course, 400 carries, injuries and all that stuff, but that would be a good deal, imho.

In calendar terms, he’s played just 4 weeks of training camp football in the past 17 months.
That’s 4 weeks of 1/2-speed and 3/4-speed football in the past 75 weeks.
But that’s precisely why you buy now when the price is low, similar to the lowball offer they sent Maclin’s way last year. Bradford would be dumb to sign it, but he can’t afford to overplay his hand too much. If this year goes wrong, he’ll never get another chance at starting.
If you’re asking for exact numbers… I have no idea. Bellichick?
Bradford’s in the same position as Maclin two years ago.
If you’re his agent, and if you’re Bradford, you bet on Bradford . . . the way Maclin did.
That’s my advice at least.

There is this thinking that Murray is a product of playing behind the best OL in the NFL. Joseph Randle averaged 6ypc behind that line.
He’s also carried the ball a ridiculous number of times and there are concerns that his body might be wearing down.
He also isn’t a game changer like Peterson, Lynch, Foster, and McCoy are. He’s not the type of guy opposing defensive coordinators game plan around.

Maragos and Prosinski are pure STers. Wolff can be your 3rd Safety, depending on his health, but because of his health and two pure STers behind him, we HAVE to do something about the position.
Reynolds couldn’t beat out anybody last year. I hope one more TC can help him, but that’s not something I would count on.

If Murray is signed, and Mathews sticks, the Eagles cap number will go down another $3-$4 million.
Will be interesting to see how Kelly fills the gaps.
Pay cut for Meco. This can’t be too tough to do. Would free up 3-4m.
Also a Bradford restructure would be nice
I know you weren’t a fan earlier, but a Bradford extension might also free up some room.
A deal with Bradford now puts the Eagles in Jerry’s World . . . borrowing from next year to pay for this year.
Too soon for either side to know true value (IMO).
But let’s assume Bradford signs a 2 year deal, turning his $12.985M salary into a $1.5M salary (or whatever vet min is) plus $11+M bonus. The Eagles gain about $5.5M in cap relief for 2014.
The other $5.5M counts against 2016.
If the Eagles traded Bradford, that’s an immediate cap hit for a player who’s gone of $11.5M.
Bottom line . . . if there’s any chance Bradford may be moved, don’t extend him. (Seems to me, at least)

The old adage – you aren’t a coach and are automatically a rube.
The way these deals are shaping up and Kelly is constructing them this team better make a run next year.
His pass pro is excellent and he personally likes his QB; ie. he wants to protect him. And you have dealt a strategic blow to a major competitor in the division.
These are things to consider when evaluating value.
You are not blowing a division rival in a deep RB draft where they can pick a cheap replacement.
I was pro Murray, despite the RBs in the draft, because I thought he doesn’t get what he wants and would come for around 6 or maybe 7. And because I like his skills.

As Tommy said in his article, last year was an anomaly compared to his previous seasons in the NFL.
With the right smoothies and playcalling he will have 3 more good years left.

Not so much “his guys,” as “guys that fit the roles I need to fill in my offense.” But I think Mac was as much about $$ as it was fit. They were willing to pay him a decent salary, just not an outrageous one.
Mac was entirely about money. he was offered a very decent contract, and KC outbid. It’s not what happened, for example, with Dallas, who low-balled Murray. Chip wanted Maclin, and he showed it, but Maclin went home for more money.
So tired of people saying that Chip jettisoned Maclin. The facts do not bear out that narrative.
Dunno that it was all about the money… he went to a coach he knows, and back to his home state. Plus the Eagles that he knew were probably not going to be the ones he would have returned to… all the uncertainty probably made the Chiefs situation look just as desirable.
But yes, Kelly definitely did not “jettison” him. They tried hard to keep him. But I may have preferred him to Murray….

No they don’t. They can draft a RB and realize that the chances that Murray comes close to duplicating his season last year & staying healthy for 16 games are about zero.
Yeah the Boys will certainly miss Murray but it is a hell of alot easier to replace him than hand out the very foolish contract he got from Kelly.

Romo and Bryant had great years last year, but it was Murray’s running that fed them, and more importantly, kept the defense off the field. The line was a big part of that, but so was Murray.

Problem was that he only had one really good year in Indy and even that year wasn’t as good as he was at any time in LA.
After that big year too, Dickerson started to break down and was done mid-through the ’90 season.
Dickerson’s big years were early in his career.
Had huge numbers of touches from 22-25.
Wasn’t the same when he reached Colts — though still led the NFL. I don’t think his heart was even in it. The poor guy went from L.A. to Indy. UGH!!!
I think the question with Murray is about wear on the tread and how that translates 30 years after Dickerson.

Just a bit. Seriously he’s delusional if he thinks Murray can come in next year and carry anywhere near the workload he did over 16 G.
First season Murray even stayed on the field for 16 G. Zero precedent for a guy who got 500 touches in NFL history either.
If the Eagles’ plan is to dramatically reduce the workload of Murray to say 250 carries and 280 touches and heavily supplement his role with Matthews then why pay him big dollars and give him a large guaranteed deal?
Looking ahead, Cox is probably going to be on the 5th year option next year. Looking for places to trim fat, Demeco is off the books entirely and unfortunately Celek can be cut with no cap hit at all. That can cover Kendricks if we don’t do any more damage today. Better hope some OL prospects work out.

Offensive Lineman don’t usually generate good return value in a trade. Ben Grubbs got traded for a 5th rounder and Logan Mankins was acquired for a 4th rounder.

You’re not looking at his upside, you’re looking at his recent production at near that age. He is an all-pro LG, arguably one of the best in the NFL. He is currently underpaid, and his contract runs for 2015 and 2016 seasons. There’s definitely value to his contract.
He’s been great in our scheme, but that may not translate. If it was true that Kelly valued his OL and QB… this makes little sense. The chemistry they had was great. Trying to integrate two new OLmen is playing with fire. And they could easily be worse.
A win now team. But it won’t be much in return. A 5th if we’re lucky. Although Chip seems to like player for player trades, so maybe a player on a rookie contract in return?
I think this will be a salary dump.
If you want to dump salary then you dump Celek or Ryans at this point. Mathis’ deal is excellent value.

Exactly. From everything I’ve learned over the past couple of years – take what Chip Kelly says at face value. He doesn’t mince words, and he usually means exactly what he says. Howie has made some great picks in the draft, and he had final say. Yes, that includes MS2, yes that includes LJ, yes that includes Zach Ertz. That’s the story.
I think that’s the point. EVEN if he was on bored (which realistically speaking he likely was given that HR was trying to find Chip players), he shifted all blame on HR.
