Cut Down Day

Posted: August 31st, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 97 Comments »

I’ll update the post during the day. Here’s what we’ve heard so far.

UPDATE #3

Clay Harbor gone. We assumed cut, but trade is possible.

Danny Watkins gone. No shocker there.

UDPATE #2

Good news for Salas and/or Maehl.

UPDATE #1

* Reuben Frank reported that S David Sims has been cut.

* Jeff McLane reported that Michael Bamiro has been cut, but that the Eagles want to keep him on the PS.

* * * * *

* SEA will cut CB Antoine Winfield. This is bad news. It means they’ll keep a young CB in his place. I don’t think the Eagles will be interested in Winfield, but that’s just a guess. I’m not sure he’d want to come here and be the #4 CB. We’re not sitting Boykin. And the Eagles like Williams and Fletcher.

Ron Parker or Byron Maxwell are still likely to be let go. Parker is more interesting to me.

* The Pats cut DE/LBs Marcus Benard and Jermaine Cunningham. Both guys could be OLBs of interest.

* Cleveland cut WR/TE David Nelson. Very interesting guy. Goes about 6-5, 220 and he’s really good in the slot. Played for the Bills in 2011 and was 61-658-5. Good Red Zone target.

Bob Bicknell coached TEs for the Bills in 2011. Nelson was a WR, but Bicknell certainly knows him and what he does well from seeing him in practice and on tape.

* The Pats let go of a couple of TEs. Some wonder if that means they could trade for Clay Harbor. It’s possible, but then the Eagles would need to find another TE. I guess the Eagles could keep Emil Igwenagu or they might like someone who is on the street, but I think dealing Harbor would be a longshot.

* The Skins cut CB Chase Minnifield. He had injury concerns coming out of college and then tore an ACL last July. Minnifield was a very good player at Virginia. If healthy, he could be an NFL CB. The Skins reportedly want to put him on their practice squad, but the fact they cut him tells you that they didn’t love the way he played this summer. I don’t know if the Eagles will want him. He’s only 5-10, 185. That’s not the big DB that Bill Davis and Chip Kelly prefer.

* Tim Tebow was cut. I hope I don’t have to say he’s of no interest…but he’s of no interest.

* * * * *

I put together a short Prospect Primer for some college players to watch today. Could be of interest to the Eagles.

What are your thoughts on D. Florence cut from Car Tom? Same as Winfield?

  2. 2 TommyLawlor said at 11:33 AM on August 31st, 2013:

    He’s never been anything special.

He could make some sense as the #4 CB because he has been a starter. And I’m sure he’d gladly accept any role offered to him.

  4. 4 Tumtum said at 12:15 PM on August 31st, 2013:

Yeah Ive never been super high on Florence just know he has pretty much always been a starter. Always thought Trufant was pretty good though.

Tebow at cornerback! He just knows how to win.

  16. 16 TommyLawlor said at 11:56 AM on August 31st, 2013:

There is some truth to this. When he’s on the field, the completion percentage is going to be low.

  17. 17 Weapon Y said at 11:54 AM on August 31st, 2013:

I think Tebow is misunderstood by both his fans and his critics. Of course, he is an erratic passer. Everyone knows that. But he is a huge threat running the ball, so much so that it can at times (not all the time) make up for his inaccuracy. Maybe he’s at fault for insisting to play QB and only QB. That could be why Belichick released him. Frankly, the Patriots don’t need him with Brady and Mallett already on the team, and a running back group with Ridley, Vereen, and Blount. I’d be really tempted to sign him as a running back. Use him in a rotation with Shady, Bryce Brown, and Chris Polk. He’d be a short yardage specialist and you could do some halfback passes from time to time. We’d have him as an emergency QB on gameday, allowing us to keep Barkley inactive with Vick as the starter and Foles as the backup. I don’t think he’d be good as a tight end because that requires good blocking against DEs and LBs, as well as the ability to run routes. I highly doubt he can do that.

I know I’m going to take a lot of crap for this idea because so many people hate Tebow with a passion. You will never hear me say that I want him to be the Eagles’ starting QB or even the backup QB. Frankly, I don’t care about all the stuff off the field. Who gives a damn if the media wants to cover him all the time? That has nothing to do with football. Good teams don’t get bothered by that stuff. Who gives a damn if his fans are annoying? Who gives a damn if he’s a bible-thumping Christian? What does that have to do with winning? All I care about is making the team better. I’m simply intrigued because it’s clear that he has talent and I think this is the way to tap into it.

  18. 18 GEagle said at 11:55 AM on August 31st, 2013:

You are lucky I like you lol…JK 🙂

  19. 19 TommyLawlor said at 11:58 AM on August 31st, 2013:

If Tebow ever embraced the notion of being a player and not just a QB, I’d be on his side. He can’t be a QB. Delusional to keep pushing that.

Must be an offensive weapon that can line up all over. Does have potential in that role.

  20. 20 Weapon Y said at 11:59 AM on August 31st, 2013:

Denard Robinson was wise to embrace the offensive weapon idea. He’s a very similar player to Tebow. I hope Tebow gets a little more open-minded. He is an awful passer, I’ll admit. But he’s such a talented runner that it would be a shame to see him never get back on the field.

  21. 21 TommyLawlor said at 12:10 PM on August 31st, 2013:

He’s actually not as talented a runner as you think. He’s tough, but lacks speed and elusiveness. Still could be good in that role, but he’s not a guy you fear. Robinson could deliver big plays. Tebow would move the chains.

  22. 22 Weapon Y said at 5:27 PM on August 31st, 2013:

He doesnt have great speed or elusiveness, but he is big and tough to bring down. All I see him as is a role player. A short yardage back. Let him run over guys. That’s all I’d see him, but that’s still valuable. Your running game would be better if you used him that way.

  23. 23 Eagles_Fan_in_San_Fran said at 11:56 AM on August 31st, 2013:

    Imagine this “Dream Team”:
Rex Ryan as HC, Buddy as DC, with Vick, Tebow and a past-his-prime McNabb as the QBs (and – what the heck – Andy as the QB coach).
We’d be guaranteed to make Sports Center every night!

    Re: Depth and Cards

This team’s talent looks solid, at least on offense, the way a playing card looks to have good size when you look down at it while it’s flat on a table.

But pick up that card and stare at it from the side . . . pretty thin.

The Birds depth (save RB and probably QB) is damned thin.

WR? D-Jax goes down, then what?

TE? Lose any of the first three — and Casey may still be hurting — then what?

OL? Sorry, T-Law, but if Peters is hurt, Barbre or even LJ at OLT is a big, big drop. Not quite as much, but if LJ or Mathis are hurt . . . ugh.

On defense, there is no card on the table to look at. Thin, thin, thin — ‘cept DE.

  92. 92 anon said at 2:38 PM on August 31st, 2013:

I think we have 2 ‘viable’ Qbs — more than most. Most teams would be thin if they lost their top 2 WRs, but i think our system will allow us to slot a lot of guys in but you’re right no replacement speedster (Maehl?). How much Te depth do you want, most teams only have 1 viable, we have 3.

  93. 93 ACViking said at 2:42 PM on August 31st, 2013:

If D-jax is hurt, we’ll have WRs that remind of us 1999.

As for the system, you can’t scheme speed.

QBs are okay. But not in the class of 2012 49ers. (Then, who is?)

As for TEs . . . I like the top 3 a lot. I’m just saying that if any of them are hurt, it hurts the offensive variety that Kelly apparently wants to use. Casey’s already nicked up.

No reason, though, D-Jax should get hurt. Atlanta’s not on the schedule.
