Rough Day

Posted: December 7th, 2014 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 270 Comments »

Seattle looked like a playoff team. The Eagles did at times, but the offense was never able to get going. They might have scored 14 points, but only gained 139 yards and were controlled by the Seahawks all game long.

This game has me ticked off because I hate Seattle and desperately wanted to beat them. At the same time, this wasn’t like Green Bay. The Eagles weren’t run off the field. The defense did everything they could to keep the game close despite being on the field all game long. STs made some plays that helped both TD drives. This loss was on the offense.

The officiating didn’t help matters. I generally believe those things even out over the course of a season, but you hate when one team clearly benefits in a big game. Seattle definitely got the better of the officiating today. That isn’t to say those calls decided the game. They were the better team and deserved to win.

This is a good Eagles team, but they are clearly a step behind teams like Green Bay and Seattle. That doesn’t mean the Eagles couldn’t beat them in the playoffs, but a lot would have to go right for that to happen.

Next Sunday’s game vs Dallas now sets up as the key to the season.

The Foles bus is warming up in the parking lot. The Sanchez bandwagon has broken an axle and spilled most of its passengers, I expect.

  4. 4 Mitchell said at 8:17 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Definitely wasn’t all his fault. We had hardly any push up front… That int from The Sanchize was turdible but Foles has made those throws this year too.

  5. 5 xeynon said at 8:22 PM on December 7th, 2014:

We can excuse Sanchez’s performance, to a point. It should be pretty clear however that the guy isn’t anything more than a decent backup quarterback from the point of view of a contending team.

  6. 6 daveH said at 10:14 PM on December 7th, 2014:

agree .. no fire in his eyes no killer instinct to take them on his shoulders .. my bud a USC Cali dude told me so when he played w the jets

  7. 7 Jarock said at 8:23 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Clearly some fans are so fed up with Foles struggles earlier this year that they’re willing to overlook Sanchez doing the same or worse. Neither QB has been great this season.

  8. 8 livingonapear said at 8:27 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I wouldnt blame Sanchez, but its clear that he doesnt have the creativity to make a difference once a team like Seatle takes away our weapons.

  9. 9 fran35 said at 8:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I agree to a point. My stance us that Foles has shown he can make all of the throws. Every one. I do not think Sanchez can make the down field throws we need to open the play book. Just my opinion, but down 14th with foles seems like we could come back. With Sanchez it feels insurmountable.

  10. 10 Mitchell said at 8:29 PM on December 7th, 2014:

He is too emotional. If it’s not going well he folds. This is one place where Nick is better. NOTHING bothers him.

  11. 11 BlindChow said at 8:34 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Eh, he was very shaky this year. There were plays where he backpedaled 15 yards without any pressure. He was clearly rattled.

  12. 12 Mitchell said at 8:36 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Rattled yes. I meant more from an emotional standpoint. Like the game is never out of reach.

  13. 13 stephenstempo said at 9:49 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I do somewhat agree here Sanchez looked as if he packed it in in the second quarter. Where was all the fire from the Dallas game? Or does he only show fire when the conditions are perfect?

I mean say what you want but I think Foles would have had a better showing today. Like in the Washington game he just seems to be able to take a beating and then get up for the next drive. I’m not necessarily high on him. I just have more confidence he’s able to play poorly and still be able to have a good quarter or half or whatever. It seems like all or nothing for sanchez.

  14. 14 daveH said at 10:16 PM on December 7th, 2014:

you are COMPLETELY ACCURATE !!! jets broke him. my bud is a high school coach/from cali and HUGE USC fan ..this was his huge complaint when he played for jets

  15. 15 BlindChow said at 8:33 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Yeah, Sanchez hasn’t been great, but you’d have to have blinders on to think Foles would’ve been a sure thing in this game.

  16. 16 Jarock said at 8:35 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Don’t think anyone is suggesting that. I just think that Foles would have given them a better chance to win. Between his even keel and willingness to throw the ball down the field, the Eagles might have kept Seattle from sitting on all those shallow crosses they kept trying to run.

  17. 17 Brown Sugar said at 8:38 PM on December 7th, 2014:

You forget the San Fran game?

  18. 18 Jarock said at 8:39 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I remember Nick just missing a pass at the end of that game to win it.

  19. 19 BlindChow said at 8:40 PM on December 7th, 2014:

And forgot all the other drives where they couldn’t score any points?

  20. 20 Jarock said at 8:41 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Heh, I was just upvoted you for noting Nick playing well down the stretch vs Arizona and SF. I still place a ton of the blame for those early games on the piecemeal OL. Won’t deny that Foles was a part of the problem as well though.

  21. 21 BlindChow said at 8:43 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Yeah, those final drives were good. It was a shame he was so uneven when it could’ve made a difference.

  22. 22 Brown Sugar said at 8:40 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I remember not scoring any offensive points being gifted what…21 by the defense and special teams.

  23. 23 47_Ronin said at 2:00 AM on December 8th, 2014:

I was at the SF game, and a lot peeps seem to forget that the game would have still been a contest even if the Eagles had scored a TD, the score would have been 27-26 with the Eagles having to go for 2 to make it a 3 point game with plenty of time for SF to get in position to kick a FG to tie.

  24. 24 NickS1, Armchair GM said at 6:37 PM on December 8th, 2014:

I remember Coop missing that pass.

  25. 25 stephenstempo said at 9:50 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    or the Washington game?

  26. 26 47_Ronin said at 1:56 AM on December 8th, 2014:

This game reminded me a lot of the San Fran game, offense couldn’t do much and was awful on 3rd down. I don’t think Foles would’ve done much better against Seattle, Foles is less mobile and does not move well in the pocket (this year) the Hawks pass rush probably would have gotten to Foles more.

  27. 27 Mitchell said at 8:35 PM on December 7th, 2014:

No, you are correct. I can not say for certain Nick would have done any better. I don’t think he would have looked as defeated as Sanchez though.

  28. 28 BlindChow said at 8:39 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I will say, Foles did do better in his final drives against San Francisco and Arizona (even though he came up short). I have hope if he comes back he’ll be more confident and competent, like when he came back from injury last year…

  29. 29 Mitchell said at 8:52 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Foles didn’t come up short in Arizona, Pooper did.

  30. 30 mksp said at 8:33 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  32. 32 Mitchell said at 9:01 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Lol, Like Sanchize is ANY better than Foles at this point. At least Nick has room to grow.

  33. 33 xeynon said at 8:44 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Nobody’s saying the Foles of this season solves all our problems but his ceiling is clearly higher than Sanchez’s. The best Sanchez can give you is “workmanlike, manages the game, doesn’t turn the ball over” – a poor man’s Alex Smith, basically. Foles is inconsistent but on his best day is a lot better than that.

  34. 34 Jarock said at 8:46 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Can’t believe you just compared Mark ‘chuck it up for grabs twice a game’ Sanchez to Alex ‘checkdown’ Smith.

  35. 35 xeynon said at 8:48 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I said “the best he can give you”. That’s basically how he played on Thanksgiving.

In a game where he has to chuck the ball up and take chances for you to win, like this one or Green Bay, you’re in trouble with him. Foles has proven he can win those kinds of games.

  36. 36 Mitchell said at 9:02 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Please don’t pretend like Sanchez is ANY better than Foles right now…..

  37. 37 Flyineagle45 said at 10:51 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Nah pick foles is not my qb

  38. 38 xeynon said at 1:47 AM on December 8th, 2014:

    Great, who is then?

Your answers are restricted to guys actually on the roster. Meaning it’s either Sanchez or Matt Barkley.

  39. 39 Mitchell said at 8:16 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I rarely complain about officials as well but how many intentional grounding calls weren’t made tonight against Wilson? That PI against Bradley…… come on, that was a good play and a penalty was not needed. We had a lot of mistakes today and feel like we stopped ourselves from winning.

  40. 40 Charlie Kelly said at 8:20 PM on December 7th, 2014:

the flag was needed.. on seahawks!! he bear hugged brad as he was going for the ball!!

  41. 41 Jarock said at 8:22 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I wouldn’t be so ticked about the PI calls against Philly if they’d called them against Seattle too. There were at least four plays where the Seattle defender was there early and no call was made. Biased refs are the worst.

  42. 42 xeynon said at 8:24 PM on December 7th, 2014:

The Seahawks defenders get those calls against every team. It’s very frustrating to watch them because they seem to be playing the “we can hold every play and they won’t call all of them” game, and getting away with it.

  43. 43 Charlie Kelly said at 8:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    tru!!

  44. 44 Mitchell said at 8:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Yes, totally agree.

  45. 45 stephenstempo said at 9:52 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Someone tweeted this stat. Maybe just coincidence but when this particular officiating crew is reffing the game Chip Kelly is 1-4 and Seattle is 5-1. Food for thought.

  46. 46 xeynon said at 8:19 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Even if we lose to Dallas, which I don’t expect, we’d still be in the driver’s seat for the NFC East title, as we’d only have to beat playing-out-the-string Giants and Redskins teams to clinch it because of their previous loss to Washington, while they have a tough game against Indianapolis. The #3 seed and a playoff home game against Detroit or Dallas are what I expect.

That would be a successful season, especially considering how much harder the injury bug bit this year than last. However, the ultimate goal is to take that next step and be on the level of Green Bay and Seattle – that last bit is going to be the tough part.

  47. 47 sonofdman said at 8:21 PM on December 7th, 2014:

If we lose to Dallas, they would be a game ahead, so we would would need them to lose again (likely to Indy) and we would need to win out to win the division.

  48. 48 xeynon said at 8:23 PM on December 7th, 2014:

You’re right, of course. Somehow I blanked on the fact that they actually have the same 9-4 record we do now.

  54. 54 pkeagle said at 8:27 PM on December 7th, 2014:

The Seahawks are one of the main reasons why we have big physical receivers (and jettisoned Jackson) as we need them to get off at the LOS.

An excellent scheme with average-above average players will beat teams like the Cowboys and Titans but you need excellent players to compete with the likes of GB and Seattle week to week.

The team is clearly missing a few more pieces to challenge for a SB and I think we knew that coming into the season. In saying that, the referees were very poor today

  55. 55 Mitchell said at 8:30 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  60. 60 H_Manders said at 8:27 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Tommy,

    I disagree with you.

You might already want to start with the non-call clear PI against Ertz on the first drive. That was a tone setter…

The extremely biased/bad officiating kept two scoring drives alive for Seattle that ended in TD’s. We lost by less than that… You know, the ineligible downfield, and IIRC there was a 1st down conversion on 3rd down where a blatant false start was missed; same on the completion for 1st down in front of Jenkins.. Likewise right after the somewhat dodgy long PI against Fletcher, they missed a blatant double hold against Logan (C and RG are grabbing him).

Yes, Seattle was the better team, and if we had won, we would have stolen one. But to say that the officiating was not decisive… sure looks like it when looking at how the score ended up…

Sure, the offense was atrocious. Yes, Jenkins dropped a likely pick-6.

But in a game like this, with two defenses dominating the respective offences, atrocious officiating like today can and on this occasion quite possible DOES decide games…

  62. 62 GermanEagle said at 8:33 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Like I said a couple of days ago. The winner of this game is going to be the no 2 seed. Since we can forget about a first round bye, the Eagles season will be on the line next Sunday. Should they somehow manage to lose to Dallas, Philly will NOT control their own destiny anymore.

It’s really strange to say that about a team that was going into today’s game at 9-3 and with a 90% chance of making the playoffs. This percentage will drop significantly with a loss next Sunday.

Don’t get me wrong: I still believe we are the superior team compared to the Cowboys, but winning the NFCE is not a gimmie as some Eagles fans may think on here.

    We. Want. Dallas.

  63. 63 xeynon said at 8:42 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I am not too worried. As big of a gap as there was between us and Green Bay/Seattle, Dallas looked just as outclassed against us. That is not a 12-4 team – they will lose at least one of their remaining games, maybe two (I think it’s better than 50-50 they lose to Indy, and @ Washington has historically been a tough game for them to win as well no matter how bad the Redskins are).

  104. 104 Mitchell said at 9:08 PM on December 7th, 2014:

We need to get some draft picks in the secondary higher than the fourth.

You mean earl Wolf’s not the answer? Shoot.

  106. 106 stephenstempo said at 10:29 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Isn’t Earl Wolff working on his residency at the Novacare Complex? Usually people who spend that much time working with doctors actually become doctors.

  107. 107 BlindChow said at 8:48 PM on December 7th, 2014:

It’s a little sad to see so many people here harping on the officiating. If you’ve ever gone to another team’s blog after the Eagles beat them, that’s exactly what you’ll see.

This team did plenty on their own to lose. The officials did not cost us this game.

  108. 108 Media Mike said at 8:49 PM on December 7th, 2014:

The refs sucked, but their sucky officiating didn’t cost us the game.

  109. 109 Mitchell said at 8:49 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Yeh we definitely lost the game ourselves, but you would be a bit ignorant if you didn’t see blatant calls missed, especially early.

  110. 110 BlindChow said at 8:52 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Those always go both ways. Still, based on the other teams’ blogs, we benefit quite a bit from missed calls ourselves.

  111. 111 Mitchell said at 8:53 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I didn’t think so early. It seemed to even out in the second half. I will never say the refs lost us a game though.

  112. 112 Jarock said at 9:00 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Bad calls are part of the game. Biased calls are a problem. Seattle got called for I believe one PI call and Ertz had to beg for it. Flag still came really late on that play. Philly got called for crucial holding and PI calls early in the game that extended Seattle’s drives. Biased refs piss me off worse than incompetent ones by a long shot.

  113. 113 BlindChow said at 9:11 PM on December 7th, 2014:

This is exactly what you’ll see on every other team’s blogs when we win.

  114. 114 Jarock said at 9:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

With the exception of the Indy game, they don’t have a leg to stand on. Even that game, we had one crucial call non-call go our way. Wasn’t like they tilted the field our direction.

  115. 115 Joe Minx said at 8:49 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Exactly. Officiating was garbage, but the Eagles wouldn’t have won even if it had been perfect. Seattle just stomped us.

  116. 116 Jarock said at 8:50 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Didn’t see a stomping. We got beat and soundly. Wasn’t nearly as one sided as the GB game though.

  117. 117 Joe Minx said at 8:52 PM on December 7th, 2014:

No, not the same kind of thing as GB but they put a vise grip on & suffocated us.

  118. 118 Jarock said at 8:57 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I don’t remember nearly the same amount of good plays on defense in the GB game. GB could have started 1st and 40 and the Eagles had no chance of stopping them. This game, we forced a bunch of third and longs. So many third and longs were forced that it became comical. Read the comment thread and count how many 3rd and long comments there were.

The problem this game was an offense that couldn’t convert on third down combined with Seattle doing a great job of eliminating our big plays. Almost every game this year, we’ve gotten a handful of +20 plays. I don’t remember one this game and we just aren’t built to win in a slug fest.

  119. 119 H_Manders said at 9:21 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Ahum….

Two TD scoring drives were extended/made possible by the refs, rather than force Seattle to punt… we lost by less than 14 points… Might Seattle have been able to still win it? Sure…

But for most of the game the Seattle offense was not able to do much either…

If you want an example of a game – similar to this one – where the Eagles did not win, while the officials were pretty good? See San Francisco.

  120. 120 Jarock said at 9:24 PM on December 7th, 2014:

This is the first time where I’ve felt that almost every crucial call went against the Eagles. After about the 6th or 7th no PI call, Peters gets flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for complaining about the no call. Again, I’m not saying that Seattle had nothing to do with it or that they wouldn’t have won regardless. I’m just hot that the refs were so clearly biased.

  121. 121 Mitchell said at 9:27 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Its so ironic that Peters gets flagged and not Sherman…. He is so annoying out there.

  122. 122 Jarock said at 8:49 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I get your point and even agree to an extent. I tend to yell at the officials for uneven calls even when we win though. Officials didn’t cost us the game, but they made it an even steeper uphill climb.

  123. 123 SteveH said at 9:03 PM on December 7th, 2014:

People weren’t pissed at the officiating after the Green Bay game, San Francisco game (aside from the obvious jacked up spot near the end on Chris Polk’s run, that was garbage), the Cardinals game… There’s always a little grumbling by every team after a loss.

This, however, was very clearly one where the Hawks got away with quite a bit, and that is doubly frustrating because their whole gameplan is to foul as much as they can get away with. You’ll recall they are the whole reason the NFL was focusing so much on illegal contact this year, because they specialized in mugging receivers, with the (correct) belief that the advantage it gave them outweighed any penalties they received because they knew the refs wouldn’t flag them all the time.

I would have said well, we just weren’t taking advantage of the lax game the officials were calling, but then they PI’d Bradley Fletcher on what looked like one that could have gone either way for a backbreaking 44 yard penalty.

So for the very team that the rules emphasis was put in place for gets away with all the shit the new emphasis was supposed to stop, it’s pretty frustrating.

I knew it was gonna be a long day with the officials when the first 2 plays of the game were illegal contact on Sherman (mugging the shit out of Maclin past the 5) and pass interference on some random LB hitting I believe Cooper or Ertz early.

  124. 124 Mitchell said at 9:04 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Very well said.

  125. 125 stephenstempo said at 10:03 PM on December 7th, 2014:

But we can’t bitch about it because everyone else bitches about it so any arguments here are obviously wrong because other people bitch about it after their games!!

  126. 126 stephenstempo said at 10:01 PM on December 7th, 2014:

That’s a silly argument. So something isn’t worth discussing ( regardless of it’s validity) simply because it’s something that gets bitched about often?

It’s kind of like when someone goes to prison and says “I’m innocent” you just ignore their please because everyone says that. Then you know sometimes it does turn out the person was innocent. Not often, but it happens.

  127. 127 Sean Stott said at 8:54 PM on December 7th, 2014:

The offense was awful today, just awful. Good special teams and pretty good defense considering they were on the field 2/3 the game.

Refball was in full effect. Seattles first touchdown was completely gifted due to a huge miscall on the downfield linemen. Not to mention the multiple bogus PI calls, and of course they don’t call them on Seattle when they are blatantly grabbing down the field.

The whole game left a shitty feeling in my stomach, mostly because of the poor offensive performance, also because of the embarrassing 3rd & Long conversions, and just how horrible the game was to watch. Especially the officiating.

  128. 128 Mitchell said at 8:54 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I think the worst part about Sanchez is his inability to get his head in the game when things aren’t going well for him. That is a terrible trait for a qb.

  129. 129 RobNE said at 9:06 PM on December 7th, 2014:

So McCoy now has 3 fumbles in the last 2 games (luckily his knee was barely down for one last game, so technically didn’t count). I am losing faith a little faith in him.

  130. 130 Jarock said at 9:07 PM on December 7th, 2014:

He’s always scared the @!#$ outta me how loose he carries the ball. Amazing he doesn’t have more fumbles for his career.

  131. 131 Mitchell said at 9:07 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Really? I mean he beasted the last 2 games. This one wan on the line as much as him. That fumble on the 20 Killed us though.

  132. 132 RobNE said at 9:13 PM on December 7th, 2014:

did he beast, or is the OL healthy? he wasn’t beasting when the OL wasn’t healthy, so it makes me think the OL is more important. Now he is great in space, but against some defenses there isn’t space, it’s more like bust through the whole and carry someone with you. Watching DeMarco and Lynch back to back, I just get a little frustrated with McCoy.

I’m just mad. I may not be totally reasonable right now.

  133. 133 Mitchell said at 9:19 PM on December 7th, 2014:

That’s totally understandable. The line was healthy tonight and nothing really happened. I do wonder what the offense would look like with a bit more of a pounder than more of an elusive back. Perhaps more of a Polk type and have more of a McCoy type as a backup?

  134. 134 RobNE said at 9:22 PM on December 7th, 2014:

right nothing happened. And our OL is really freakin good. So what happened? Their D is so good that it shuts down both our pass and our run? That seems hard to believe.

  135. 135 Mitchell said at 9:24 PM on December 7th, 2014:

McCoy’s contract makes him easy to move on from after 2015 if he’d like to keep helping us thrown games away by fumbling.

Tommy we got dominated in a different manner than the GB game….but the resulting analysis is still the same…we still struggle against the better teams….based upon recent play both Seattle and GB are as close as we are getting to elite for this year at least….we really needed our pass D to play better….it has been our Achilles heel against the better teams…. Really annoyed by this performance….while I think we still make the playoffs….we are probably on and done….

  138. 138 Mitchell said at 9:10 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  171. 171 Mitchell said at 12:48 AM on December 8th, 2014:

It’s really frustrating because I’m looking for a good cb to watch some tape on and everyone I say, “wow! He looks good,” has off the field issues.

  172. 172 Henly125 said at 9:38 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Seattle defense was way too physical for us. Like it or notvwe were completely overmatched and could not move the ball what so ever. From the running game, to the short passing game, to the middle and deep passing game, we were absolutely SHUT DOWN. No other way to describe it.

Defense played well enough for us to win, but Seattle’s defense played two times better. We were completely overmatched on offense. Sanchez looked uncomfortable from the second he took his first snap. We are now 0-4 against the class of the NFC, and with this game, it’s clear where we stand.

The defense is very solid in the front seven, Fletcher Cox is on his way to the top with each snap he plays, same goes for Kendricks and Curry, etc… But that secondary? Disgusting, Jenkins reminded us why he doesn’t play cornerback anymore, he displayed terrible man-coverage skills. Cary Williams proved his tendencies to be inconsistent and non-instinctive are not fixable, and Bradley Fletcher? Do I have have to really go any further than just mention his name? That 44 yard penalty truly draws up his game and his ineffectiveness as an NFL starter; what’s frustrating is that this happened against a very week receiving corps and offense in general. Which Lynch on LOCK DOWN the entire game, you would think the Seahawks would lose this game, but then we’re reminded of our lackluster secondary and here we are back in square one and tied up with fucking Dallas ONCE AGAIN.

This game pretty much sums up that we’re not at the level we think we are, at least not yet.. And this is coming from a fan like myself who thinks the Eagles can beat ANYBODY in this league with ease. Sometimes you have to take a step back and truly embrace the fact the team is just not there yet in terms of competing with the upper echelon of the NFC .. And thats okay. Because we will be there very very soon.

Extremely pissed the fuck off over this game. Unbelievable.

  173. 173 Mitchell said at 9:40 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  178. 178 Henly125 said at 9:45 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  206. 206 RobNE said at 10:01 PM on December 7th, 2014:

was the Seattle OL called for holding even once? We got so much penetration, then Wilson starts moving around and normally that’s a recipe for holding.

  207. 207 Jarock said at 10:02 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Not that I recall. I do remember an Eagles LB getting called for a bogus within the five yards holding call on their first possession. Alright, I feel like I’m validating blindchow’s comment on complaining about refs now. My last kvetch on them.

  209. 209 MagsMightyMutt said at 12:43 AM on December 8th, 2014:

Right at the start of the game, there should have been a PI call on Seattle. Not called.

Per Brandon Lee Gowton. @BrandonGowton over on BGN
Chip Kelly’s Eagles are 1-4 when Bill Vinovich’s crew is reffing games. Seattle Seahawks are 5-1.

    Food for thought.

then we should have played more physically.

  213. 213 Jack Burden said at 10:14 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Look.mRef’s were bad, but that’s not why we lost. We lost because 1) our offense was terrible, and 2) our pass defense was worse than our offense.

  214. 214 Jarock said at 10:14 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Yes to 1. No to 2. Pass defense was bad, but not the primary reason for loss. Pass defense was what it has been all season.

  215. 215 Jack Burden said at 10:16 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Maybe offense was worse? They were both terrible

  216. 216 stephenstempo said at 10:16 PM on December 7th, 2014:

well it all falls on our offense imo our defense was on the field 80% of the game or some ridiculous amount. When you never get a break you will eventually see some cracks. Our pass offense isn’t good but it’s not like Russel wilson is a world beater.

  217. 217 stephenstempo said at 10:15 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I read too deeply into everything.

  219. 219 MagsMightyMutt said at 12:42 AM on December 8th, 2014:

What a crock. The pass defense had a few bad moments, but they kept Wilson from passing even when he had time, in the first half, and they held the defending Super Bowl champs to 24 points. Isn’t our offense supposed to score 40 per game? Right?

  220. 220 ACViking said at 10:18 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Who are the other losses to?

  221. 221 stephenstempo said at 10:26 PM on December 7th, 2014:

That I’m not sure. Like I’ve said elsewhere I’m sure this is an occasion of small sample size and I realize that correlation =/= causation. I’m not up to it but it would be a fun study to go around and look at all the teams and styles teams play and match them up with certain crews to see if certain officiating crews just tend to be a more favorable/unfavorable match-up for certain styles of offense/ defense and if such a thing is even worth considering or is negligible. I’d say in the long run it’s probably negligible but could be interesting to look at the small scale effects.

I mean if this is the kind of crew that allows for physical play from corner backs that obviously favors a team that actually has physical cornerbacks. Assuming such a bias exists of course.

Which is why I said food for thought.

  222. 222 RobNE said at 10:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Maybe our replay expert should do a scouting report on that week’s crew

  223. 223 stephenstempo said at 10:32 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Well that might not actually matter. Though I’d be surprised if they didn’t. I’m sure that kind of thing happens all the time. I guarantee players at least have an “idea” of what they can get away with. Like I said though if a crew is lenient on physical secondary play you actually have to have a physical secondary to take advantage of that.

  224. 224 MagsMightyMutt said at 12:40 AM on December 8th, 2014:

Wow. That’s pretty skewed I’d say. Surely the league would take notice? Or not.

  225. 225 RobNE said at 10:08 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Kendricks and Cox balled today. If as Brent from Eagles Rewind says, the most important thing this year is that one or more players show they could be elite (because ultimately you need elite players here and there to win a SB), then these two are answering the call. They both have just been kicking ass.

  226. 226 ACViking said at 10:17 PM on December 7th, 2014:

  232. 232 ACViking said at 10:14 PM on December 7th, 2014:

While discussing the referees, no one has mentioned the no call on Trent Cole for striking Wilson in the head on a third down incompletion.

Mark Sanchez threw for less than 100 yards. He completed 50% of his passes.

This is the 21st century NFL, where quarterbacks routinely throw for 400 yards in a game.

McCoy ran for less than 60 yards.

    Sanchez couldn’t throw the ball.

The fact is, Seattle kicked the Eagles’ collective ass.

  233. 233 Jarock said at 10:17 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Seattle’s D kicked the Eagles O’s ass. Our D balled. Our ST’s were good. Offense was completely inept thanks to no threat in the passing game.

  234. 234 ACViking said at 10:28 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Agree. Completely.

  235. 235 stephenstempo said at 10:20 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Well we could discuss all the no calls obviously. Officiating was bad for both teams it’s just that the bigger mistakes slanted in one direction. Fairly simple. I do like that an honest discussion of the officiating is considered too low-brow to some though. I agree with your other points though. Sanchez just didn’t seem to have any fight in him.

  236. 236 BobSmith77 said at 10:23 PM on December 7th, 2014:

For everybody harping about the CBs, it was the LBs who gave up a bunch of those passing plays and Jenkins who had his worst game of the season including that dropped pick 6 which was a back-breaker. 24-21 totally changes that game and one the reasons I wasn’t crazy about the Jenkins signing is because Jenkins wasn’t a playmaker. After a really solid start, he has leveled off quite a bit.

McCoy also came up small tonight. Didn’t think he ran decisively as the game wore on and that funke was huge. For a guy who is supposed to be an All-Pro, he has come up small in slit of a lot Eagles big games in his career towards the end of the season & playoffs. May have passed Montgomery but I would still take Monthomery (Westbrook and Watters too) if I needed an Eagles RB in a big game.

  237. 237 Jarock said at 10:27 PM on December 7th, 2014:

I thought on the initial watch that Fletcher and Jenkins were the guiltiest parties on the third down plays. Billy Davis loves matching up his safeties in man to man and Jenkins was just outmatched by Baldwin all day.

On McCoy, you have a very good point about him coming up small in big games. His style works best if he’s able to get in the open field regularly, and against playoff caliber defenses, that doesn’t happen nearly as often. He needs to show that he can grind out the tough yards against physical defenses. We held Lynch to 3.7 yards a carry and it was still easy to be impressed by how hard he ran.

  238. 238 BobSmith77 said at 10:59 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Fletcher got beat on 2 plays I remember but the pass inf call on him was weak and he did break up that deep ball. Wasn’t the biggest issue as he has been some weeks.

Only guy with and speed today on the lb or secondary for the eagles was kendricks and he still doesn’t seek to be moving in coverage as well as he did before he got hurt.

Shocking at the game how much faster the Seahawks players looked in coverage.

  241. 241 BobSmith77 said at 10:39 PM on December 7th, 2014:

    Other observations:

    – they shaded Earl Thomas over to Maclin’s side an awful lot today. Figured they could handle Cooper 1 on 1 and they did.

    – Sanchez looked for Matthews too much but Simon and others as necessary did a number on Matthews who couldn’t create space and was bottled up all day.

    – kelly almost seemed too conservative at times with the play calling today. When Foles was the starter, this team threw more deep attempts per att than any other team in the league. Often felt they forced it and it lead to some of Foles struggles while with Sanchez they seem to be keeping almost every thing under 20 yards.

    – Eagles coaching staff had done a good job of scheming this year but they struggle when they run into a team that is more physical and for the first time all year too much speed.

    – tip of the cap to the Seahawks secondary who played physical coverage but did it with speed and hit hard & wrapped up. Looked like a throwback game with WRs being draped and struggling to find some open room.

  242. 242 BlindChow said at 10:44 PM on December 7th, 2014:

Still wonder what would have happened with Desean today instead of Cooper. Would have struggled too but it amazes me how soft Cooper is on man press matchups and this game was begging for just 2-3 big plays by the offense to turn things in the Eagles favor.

I thought the Eagles would lose this game before the year and at the bye. Still have an excellent chance to go 12-4, wrap up the division, and host a playoff gave in the 1st round.

Just understand why people are down because this team had struggled against every good team in the NFC and i can’t see them either going into Seattle, GB, or even Detroit and winning a road playoff ganes. AZ is the exception because of hoe pitiful their offense has been under Stanton.

Tonight they lost to the defending Super Bowl champions, who might even repeat. They went down fighting, no shame in that. Shady set the all-time rushing record. The Eagles are going to win the NFC East with a 12-4 record, their best record in ten years. They may well win a playoff game. They ain’t gonna’ win the Lombardi. Last year was good, this year is better. Life ain’t so bad in Eagles Nation. A lot of fans would trade places with us. G’night.

My parting thought… Despite the defenses struggles, the front 7 was balling out for most of the game. I feel really confident in our young bucks up front, lead by Cox and Kendricks. It’s nice to finally have a good young core to build around on defense, now if we could just get some talent in that secondary we’ll really have something going for us.

  270. 270 JJVJack said at 2:39 AM on December 8th, 2014:

Sorry to disagree but the Refs did decide this game. How many first downs did they get by penalty. Then completed a long 3rd down we get called for a hold and how far down the field was there Lineman. I counted at least 5 easy to call PI against us, nope only 1 which I did not count. The calls made us change the game plan. The NFL lost a fan today, I will always love the Eagles but games like this convince me Money runs the Refs. NFL head office money.
