More on the Nickel Situation

There were a lot of reactions to the previous article so let me address some of them.

* A few of you pointed out there was a 4th option…letting Brandon Boykin play this year and show he deserves to be kept around in the future. Yeah, we’d all love that. The problem is that Chip Kelly doesn’t want a CB that is 5-9, 183. Period. We can argue the merits of Chip’s philosophy, but the bottom line is that Boykin wasn’t going to get a long term deal. You either deal him now or lose him to free agency.

I already covered the question of Kelly and not wanting small players in a previous post.

Someone pointed out that Brandon Graham looked like a goner and ended up getting a new deal. There is a big difference in the two. Graham was a backup, but he still played the position of OLB. He went up against starting OTs when rushing the passer. Graham showed the ability to play like a starter.

Boykin played the slot. While the coaches value that position, they aren’t going to pay an undersized guy to play that role. If the Eagles thought Boykin would sign for a reasonable deal, they might feel different. They know he wants big money and just aren’t going to overpay for a player his size or for that role.

* Eric Rowe is going to stay on the outside. The coaches want him to focus on learning one position for now. They feel his best position is CB. It would be great if Rowe could start at CB and Nolan Carroll could cover the slot. Some want Rowe to play FS, freeing Walter Thurmond up to play Nickel. Rowe is staying at CB, and for now he’s the backup to Carroll.

* What about Denzel Rice? He might be in the mix to play the Nickel. I couldn’t remember if the coaches had worked him there or strictly on the outside.

* Some of you want me to be more critical of Kelly. I don’t criticize for the heck of it. My first goal is to understand the thinking behind a move. If there is logic, I can deal with it.

I don’t like the 3-4 defense, but that’s what Chip wants to I set aside my feelings and focus on his ability to build a good 3-4 defense. I’m not as fixated on having big players as Kelly, but that’s what he wants. I focus on him trying to build the roster he wants. That’s how my mind works.

* Were the Eagles foolish for dealing Boykin with a rookie, unproven second year player and journeyman veteran as the key replacement options? This is a matter of opinion, but I don’t think so.

This isn’t a case of the Eagles trying to force a player into the Nickel spot. They thought Shepherd looked natural in there and took a long look at him there in the spring. Had he struggled, Boykin would probably still be an Eagle.

One of the reasons the Eagles targeted Jaylen Watkins in the 2014 draft was his versatility.

They have seen him play the slot in college and think he’s got the skill set to play there in the NFL.

As to Biggers, he has plenty of experience playing the Nickel spot in the NFL. This isn’t new to him at all.

We don’t know if Shepherd would have panned out, or if Watkins or Biggers will pan out, but there is some logic in the thinking. The Eagles weren’t relying on one player to be The Answer. They had multiple options to replace Boykin and hoped one would pan out. We have to wait and see what happens.

* Can these moves fail? Yes, absolutely. Just because there is logic behind them doesn’t guarantee a thing. Chip might be wishing he never let Cary Williams and Brandon Boykin go. Kelly isn’t afraid to take chances, and that is a good thing. You must be bold when trying to build an NFL roster. But bold moves that don’t pay off will get you fired.

Why then did Chip and Davis blather on last season about how the nickel CB was a ” starter role” and how much they valued Boykin’s play there? So much, in fact, that they stated they could not afford to use him on the outside. They were just blowing smoke up our backsides?

Now, Watkins is going to replace Boykin? The Watkins pick who has done absolutely nothing so far here as a player. Who is blowing smoke again?

I think it is pretty obvious they are grasping at straws now after the Boykin trade and Shepard injury. Maybe Earl Wolff can start at nickel CB, lol.

As for Kelly’s moves – yeah, of course there is an internal logic behind all of them. He wouldn’t have made them if they didn’t make sense to him. I don’t think anyone thinks he’s insane. My issue is that looking at the team from the perspective of an outsider, that logic appears to be questionable in some cases. Chip already dumped a borderline star player for nothing and got burned by it last year with Jackson. This year he’s repeated the feat and also voluntarily weakened depth and churned the roster in a way that’s usually disastrous for NFL franchises while acquiring a reputation as an aloof control freak who treats his players as replaceable parts. For all his talk about being open minded and believing in the benefits of smart people challenging each other he also appears to have zero tolerance for anyone challenging his judgment.

Can that approach work? Yeah, clearly. Parcells and Belichick are hardly teddy bears and it hasn’t stopped them from winning. But the optimists are ignoring the fact that it also fails, a lot. And when it does, it’s not pretty. NFL players are grown men who get paid to do a job, they’re not scared college kids willing to do anything to get to the NFL. If you treat them like dog doo doo and you don’t back it up by winning early and often, they will lose respect for you and everything can go south very quickly. All of his moves this past season have ratcheted up the leverage of this season immensely. If Kelly wins, he will be vindicated. But if he doesn’t, it could get really ugly.

  21. 21 Dominik said at 6:47 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I’m all for giving players chances, what I don’t like is players who didn’t pan out at bad Franchises and bad Defenses to me more than camp bodies. Which is why Prosinski on Defense would scare the hell out of me (I know he’s a ST stud). And which is why I cringe when Biggers is called one of the options for the slot CB.

I’m not in the anti Boykin trade camp. But I sure hope it wasn’t just Shepard who they liked enough to trade Boykin, your starting slot corner. I also hope they didn’t think Biggers will get that role, because from Boykin to Biggers in 40 percent of the snaps, among others playing Cruz and Beasley twice a year + Edelman, that would be too big of a drop off for a 5th/4th rounder imo.

If they liked Watkins progression and if they think Rize could have a chance, or Carroll moving inside with Rowe outside in Nickel – all fine with me (+ they couldn’t know Shepard would tear his ACL, of course). Those are young players that could make a leap. I just don’t want Biggers in there for 40 percent of the snaps.

Same with Prosinski. If he makes the team because we keep 10 DBs (5 CBs, 5 Safeties) and there is a Safety back-up who actually can play Defense in case a starter gets hurt (Couplin, Wolff, maybe Reynolds), go ahead and keep 2 ST studs who can’t play Defense. I just don’t want Maragos and Prosinski as your Safeties #3 and 4, because that will be a disaster if something happens to Jenkins or Thurmond.

  22. 22 Anders said at 6:50 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Are we really that scared of Beasley? He is like 5th options in that offense.

  23. 23 Dominik said at 7:07 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I’m not scared of Beasley. He’s no prime Wes Walker or Edelman, but he’s solid.
Still don’t want Biggers on the field for 40 percent of the snaps.

  24. 24 Anders said at 7:08 AM on August 11th, 2015:

My guess is that we will play less nickel with Thurmond and Jenkins at safety

  26. 26 Sean Stott said at 12:54 PM on August 11th, 2015:

Understand your Biggers concerns. Not so sure about Prosinski, he may be a decent backup option.

  28. 28 Dominik said at 8:18 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Prosinski is an outstanding STer. He was cut by probably the worst team in the NFL DESPITE his ST abilities. That’s how much he sucks at playing Defense.

Remember the TD against the Jags where there was no one near Maclin for 20 Yards? Well, guess who was responsible for Maclin on that play…

  29. 29 Jarock said at 7:48 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I worried about this last year. People here understandably criticize Nate Allen. Scary part is Prosinksy and Maragos would make Nate look like Dawkins in his prime by comparison.

  30. 30 Dominik said at 6:42 AM on August 12th, 2015:

Right. As crazy as that sounds, we were lucky that Allen (and Jenkins, but that’s not crazy) weren’t hurt as soon as it was clear Wolff couldn’t play anymore. Because that would have meant Prosinski or Maragos and it would have been awful.

  31. 31 A_T_G said at 8:29 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Not speaking specifically of Biggers, but sometimes the reason a player didn’t work out in a bad franchise is the reason they are a bad franchise. Remember in the waning days of the Reid tenure, players would leave us and be better elsewhere? Jarrett and Dunlap come to mind, but there were more. The problem wasn’t the players, it was our player development, and it is why we were becoming a bad franchise.

  32. 32 Dominik said at 8:59 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Generally speaking, you’re right of course. But I’ve watched Biggers enough over the years to simply not want him on the football team I root for.

Look at the Front Seven the Redskins D had. Wasn’t great, but pretty solid. And then look at their defensive stats. Their DBs let our DBs look like Pro Bowlers. They had one promising player in Breeland, the rest was just awful. Biggers was part of that group.

  33. 33 GEAGLE said at 8:38 AM on August 11th, 2015:

No idea what to expect from Proz in terms of safety play, but I do think his ST prowess makes him a lock to make this roster… no idea how Proz looks at safety these days, but he did manage to snatch up 3 INTs in the first week of camp…
    ..
Proz Beastly ST Play is what earns him a roster spot,,, if we can get something out of him as a DB it would be a big bonus as far as I’m concerned..

If Fans want to enjoy another elite special team unit like last year, we have to understand when chip prioritizes ST play so highly when it comes to roster depth selection… If Chip is going to just give the 4th safety spot to the 4th best safety instead of continuing to prioritize ST play, we aren’t going to have as elite of a ST unit as last year.,and after seeing what a huge boost our ST was, I’m happy to continue to see our coach prioritize ST play more then most coaches in the NFL when it comes time choosing our backups..
    ..
I think Maragos, Braman, Tutu, Prosinski, Burton will all make our Roster due to special teams play…

  34. 34 Dominik said at 8:46 AM on August 11th, 2015:

“I think Maragos, Braman, Tutu, Prosinski, Burton will all make our Roster due to special teams play…”

And that’s ok. But we need one back-up Safety who can play Defense. Like I said, if we keep 5 Safeties, Maragos and Prosinski can be two of them. But we need a #3 who can play Defense. Having Prosinski in there on D in case one starter gets injured (and Thurmond has a history of that) will bring us all together in the wish we still had Nate Allen.

  35. 35 GEAGLE said at 12:56 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I assume the 5th safety will come down the Couplin vs Wolff vs Reynolds… Winner joins Jenkins, Thurmond, Maragis, Pros as the 5th safety…
    ..
Hopefully both Couplin and Wolff look good in preseason and push each other.. Feel so much better about the safety position if one of those two grow into a promising safety instead of just a ST player…. I have no idea what to expect from Maragos or Pros on defense so I just assume they are here for special teams

  36. 36 Jarock said at 7:51 PM on August 11th, 2015:

What scares me about this idea is it doesn’t account for the fact that we need two backup safeties who can actually play. Thurmond is pretty much guaranteed to be injured by week 4. That would leave us one play from having Prosinsky or Maragos on the field playing D. That’s a disaster. For that matter, not sure Brian Braman starting @ LB would be much better.

  37. 37 Dominik said at 6:40 AM on August 12th, 2015:

Well, that’s the price you pay for having the best ST unit in the NFL. There is always, with every roster decision, a trade-off. I think we’ve seen how much ST can contribute last season. We would have never had the record we had at the beginning of the year without our great ST unit.

And there is the old saying that you’ll win a game if you win two out of the three phases. Defense, Offense, ST – if you win two of those, chances are good you’ll win the game.

And don’t forget, we have versatility at the back end. I hope Billy D wouldn’t play Prosinski or Maragos back there if Thurmond and Jenkins get hurt. We could play with the #3 Safety (Couplin, Reynolds, Wolff) and either Rowe or Watkins (whoever doesn’t wins the nickel job). Would it be ideal? No. But you can’t have everything. And if two out of two starters at a position are hurt, you’re going to have a hard time no matter what. It’s just the reality.

  38. 38 Tumtum said at 2:28 AM on August 12th, 2015:

To back Tommy up a bit here (and I have been as critical of the off-season moves as I think anyone has been on this forum, including the Boykin trade).

Chip didn’t make the trade because there was a promising 6th round rookie. His eggs were not all in that basket. Watkins, Biggers, Sheppard, the list goes on. The play that we were going to get from nickle went from amazing to adequate the second we traded Boykin, and it doesn’t matter who is there. Sorry, it just isn’t that hard of a spot to fill. As much as the Eagles have struggled on defense they have NEVER EVER had an issue at NB since I have been an Eagles fan. Sure there has been less than spectacular play there, but it has always been way down on the list of reasons we didn’t win the Super Bowl.

To back Chip up (and remember I wanted Boykin here), if he was only ever going to let Brandon be a NB, he got AMAZING value for him. When he was first traded I made a comment about the compensation along the lines of “bag of chips”. I was pretty wrong in retrospect. Think about the nickle position here for the past 25 years and you will agree (sorry I’m 30.. can’t help ya beyond that).

  42. 42 GEAGLE said at 8:30 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Bout time Jaylen Watkins starts getting some love.. Think people are ridiculous for already ruling that kid out simply because he didn’t light the league on fire as a rookie..
    ..
If fans are going to write off every corner that doesn’t produce as a rookie, we wouldn’t have enough corners to field a team..

I can’t agree with The thinking that chip trades Boykin simply because the 6th rd rookie looked good running around without pads in OTA’s., more likely is Chip thought Highly of a couple of the kids who were playing behind Boykin.

Jaylen Watkins is a talented versatile young player known for high level football IQ… I expect big things from Jaylen.. Even if JaCorey stayed healthy, I still expected Jaylen in year 2 to outplay JaCorey in his rookie season
    ..
I really don’t understand how we can draft a corner in the 4th round, not play him as a rookie, and a year later everyone treats him like he is destined to always suck? Do not sleep on Jaylen Watkins,,, I’m looking for the kid to make significant improvements in year 2…, my money is on Watkins winning the starting Nickel, and I would have bet on Watlins starting in September even if JaCorey didn’t get hurt

cornerback is a position rookies have no business playing.. Watkins not playing as a rookie means NOTHING… talented kid, high football IQ, versatile enough that chip let him practice at multiple positions as a rookie which is rare since chip prefers to have rookies spend their first year focused on 1 position..

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jaylen Watkins grows into a very suitable nickel replacement for Boykin…absurd for fans to already rule out a 4th round pick of a year ago.., the nickel spot is Watkins to lose… no idea what level of play to expect out of Biggers..
    ..
Watkins instantly becomes one of the 5 must watch players of the preseason… I’m sure seeing Shep run around in shorts without pads impressed coaches, but no way Do I believe that he was the reason we traded Boykin. I assume that the coaches liked a couple of the young players to replace Boykin.,,,, now it comes down to Watkins vs Biggers
    ..
Hopefully the colts starters play at least 2 drives. Like to see Jaylen get some good work in defending TY Hilton.,.

What a corner looks like as a rookie means NOTHING!!! The year 2 leap a corner makes is drastically more important then what a corner looks like as a rookie.. Jaylen Is going to show growth in year 2… How much will he improve in his year 2 leap is the question,,,, shame on this city for already ruling out such a talented young DB who hasn’t even had a chance to fail yet lol

  43. 43 Avery Greene said at 9:10 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I think this is much closer to the reality than CK doesn’t like good players. There’s 6-8 other players on the roster that want a spot in the secondary and the competition may bring out the best in a couple of them.

  44. 44 EagleNebula said at 10:41 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Correct me if I am wrong, but in the game Watkins got some playing time he flashed a couple of times…for a rookie. Or maybe it was just comparing him to Bradley Fletcher made me think that?

  45. 45 GEAGLE said at 11:51 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Yeah he def flashed and made some plays.. I’m sure there were also some plays he would like to have back..but Jaylen is a very smart player who just need experience to grow, so when he makes mistakes, good chance he uses them as growth opportunities…. Young players need to play, make mistakes, learn from them…..ESPECIALLY at cornerback, you really can’t even bother trying to judge a rookie corner.
    ..
everyone was high on Trae Wayne’s, and the kid still has a very promising future, but anyone see how badly he was ROASTED during the hall of fame game?…Trae looked like an Undrafted CB in his first preseason game. He was horrible, yet I wouldnnt bet against him growing into a quality starting corner… It just takes time.. Some positions are easier to transition from college to Pro, corner is not one of those positions…. It’s funny to me how fans could get so excited about a 6th round rookie after practocing in shorts and helmets during OTAs, yet be down on the talented corner we drafted in the 4th round last year? It’s not like they saw Watkins continuosly get beat last year…
    ..
Watkins barely played last year, and he was playing behind a quality corner in Boykin.. There is no reason why fans shouldn’t be excited about Jaylen.. Smart kid, adapts quickily. Was able to be successful no matter where the coaches needed him to play….. I’m extremely excited to get to see how much growth Watkins will show in the preseason…

  46. 46 Ben said at 1:09 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I like Watkins as well and I think having a year in Chips system has helped him to adjust to the NFL and sometimes it takes a year or even two years for players to live up to their draft stock.
I love our DB depth and I think trading Boykin was a really good move, as if we decided to keep him, he would have left for more money next season and we would get nothing in return.
At 5’9 and 180 lbs, Chip knew he wasn’t in the long term plans so trading him now IMO was the best move that the Eagles could have made, considering the depth at this position.

  52. 52 Luke Grosse said at 8:36 AM on August 11th, 2015:

It seems that everyone forgot about when the Eagles let go of an experienced, successful Nickel CB and handed the job to a rookie. That’s right. They let go Joselio Hansen and gave the job to Brandon Boykin. It’s an understandable move. It was likely going to work out well with Shepherd too, but the injury occurred. Fortunately, there’s still options that are not horrible.

  53. 53 Tumtum said at 8:43 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Didn’t Chip and Davis state last season that the nickel CB position was considered a “starting role” and that they valued Boykin there so much they could not afford to try him on the outside?

If that is true, and they were not just blowing sunshine up our backsides, I think the obvious real reason they kept Graham instead of Boykin has nothing to do with “showing the ability to start”, but rather Graham’s ability to rush the passer was too good to let go.

Boykin could have easily started on the outside, but was never given the chance due to his size. Not his performance. His size. We’ll have to see if it backfires or not. The injury to Shepard certainly does not help, but there are some other options we can give chances to play. Are they as good as Boykin? Time will tell.

  57. 57 A_T_G said at 8:50 AM on August 11th, 2015:

They said that to build up Boykin, make him feel appreciated, and hope he becomes satisfied with his role. It didn’t work, but there was nothing sinister about it. They were trying to help their team be the best it could.

Never said there was anything sinister about it, just wanted to confirm they were blowing sunshine as I suspected they were.

They were trying to help their team be the best it could? Really? By continuing to play Fletcher game after game while he routinely got torched? I guess they have a strange way of helping.

  59. 59 A_T_G said at 9:10 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Do you disagree that their motives and goal was to make the team the best that they could? What do you believe they were going for?

  60. 60 Gary Barnes said at 9:26 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I think the motives are obviously fine, yes they want to be the best they can be, but the execution was flawed in this situation in many ways IMO.

They had a starter (Fletcher) who regressed from the year before and was clearly being picked on by other teams. They did pretty much nothing to address it until very late in the season and the damage was done.

Part of the reason for that is they had little quality depth at outside CB and thus had boxed themselves into using Williams/Fletcher.

The other part IMO is they refused to try anyone else on the outside, like Boykin, who could possibly have improved the level of play there because their size criteria and scheme dictated a certain approach and they would not change it in an attempt to adjust to what other teams were doing to them and thus have a better chance of winning games.

They were also teaching their CB to not look back, but to watch the receiver’s body/reactions. This approach led to many penalties against our CB and little turnovers since it is quite difficult to INT a pass when you’re not even looking at the ball.

Again, we’ll have to see what happens this season to know if trading Boykin will backfire on them or not. If Boykin starts in PIT, a 4th rd pick is nothing to sneeze at, but if their CB struggle again this season one could legitimately question their execution again on a very important position.

  61. 61 A_T_G said at 6:35 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I guess I misunderstood when you said “really?” That you were questioning whether it was true. I am glad we agree on their motives. When you talked about blowing smoke, to me that implied a desire to be untruthful and dishonest, but you say that you did not mean that either. The rest of the stuff into your latest post is unrelated to what was said at press conferences about Boykin, and almost seems to be distracting from the topic.

  62. 62 Avery Greene said at 9:17 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I think it was you in the other thread (maybe?) that talked about Davis having to get it done this year?

Davis admitted as much that he probably should have put Carroll on the outside earlier in the year. Granted, he was hampered early in the year, but he should have been put in the game. That’s Davis’s job to get the defense ready and to get the right players out there.

I want to like Davis, but what happened in the secondary last year was atrocious. Not because Fletcher was back there (tho I hated Williams more), but because they kept doing the same thing expecting a different result.

I noticed in the last few games Huff started getting more reps on the offense – CK made some changes to that side of the ball, but we didn’t see much on the defensive side.

So I guess in this long post, my point is that I think a part of that blame goes on Davis. Yes, CK is the head coach, but he entrusts that defense to Davis. So, I think he has this year to show what he can do (he does have the talent), and if he doesn’t get it done maybe we see Undlin as the new DC.

  63. 63 Tumtum said at 2:41 AM on August 12th, 2015:

Davis noted that Carroll knew dime and Fletcher didn’t as well. He didn’t want to potentially weaken two positions was his implication for not starting Carroll. I guess you want to probably put that on DB coaching. They made a move there which is good.

  64. 64 Mitchell said at 8:53 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Why do people keep saying Boykin could have easily started on the outside? Of its true he would have. Maybe in a cover scheme like with the Steelers but not here. Coaches watched him play for hours upon hours. I don’t think Chip is so dumb that he said,” Wow! Boykin is great outside but I don’t think we’ll put him there.” I don’t want to hear that prototypical size was the only factor because Graham doesn’t have prototypical size for Chip either.

  65. 65 Gary Barnes said at 8:59 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Did you read my post? I stated the real reason Graham was kept is because his pass rushing skills are too good to be let go, thus Chip was willing to make an exception to his size criteria.

I doubt they ever seriously played Boykin on the outside in practice beyond the random rotation. He was designated the nickel CB. That is where they thought he fit best and size must have been one of the primary reasons for that judgement.

  66. 66 Mitchell said at 9:25 AM on August 11th, 2015:

And Boykin would have been kept if his coverage skills were too good to let go. Just curious but how do you know that they didn’t seriously play him outside in practice? There are several we don’t see, right?

  67. 67 Gary Barnes said at 9:31 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Its not the same IMO. Pass rush skills from the LB spot are a harder skill set to find now than coverage skills by a nickel CB. Boykin would have to be truly elite to be kept which would have meant he could play outside at any size anyway…

  68. 68 Mitchell said at 9:37 AM on August 11th, 2015:

So the. You agree it was the right decision to trade him? If he wasn’t good (elite)enough to beat out what we had then it was right to trade him. He should have got a shot but there had to be reasons in addition to size why he wasn’t.

  69. 69 GEAGLE said at 10:39 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I can see a case for arguing against making the trade..
    ..
After this season we have to worry about extending Cox,Curry,Kendricks,Thornton, SAM Bradford… Which means two things:
    1) Probably can’t pay to extend Boykin
    2) Probably won’t see the Eagles sigń a bunch of other teams free agents next year
    ..
So if a team like the steelers or Miami value boykin as an Outside corner in their schemes, and making him an offer paying him starting corner money which isn’t cheap..and we don’t sign other teams free agents because we are busy extending our own players, good chance we could have gotten a 4th or 5th round compensatory pick for keeping Boykin this year and losing him to free agency next March…
    ..
Even if you wanted to get Boykin out the way to make room for Jaylen Watkins or JaCorey to grow, one can argue that since we are trying to make the playoffs this year, it would be better to keep Boykin on the bench as depth for this year and take a compensatory pick whem someone makes him a starting cornerback offer in the 4th or 5th round range, then to lose Boykin now for a 4th round pick…
    ..
I would have preffered not trading Boykin away and risking losing him for nothing at the end of the season, because being successful this year is most important to me and you can NEVER have ENOUGH depth… But No poïnt in crying over spilled milk and I can see a case for trading him, and I can see a case for keeping him 1 more year…
    ..
I am a big Jaylen Watkins fan, so right now, I’m not concerned…but two corners down (boykin,JaCorey) we are losing what “depth safety net” that we had…..if the DB injuries DONT stop, we can end up regretting it… If Wakins stays healthy, Im perfectly comfortable with the trade even after our rookie got hurt
    ..
If the Eagles and players DIDNT rave about JaCorey when we traded away Boykin, we would be looking at things so differently today. We wouldnt think an Injury to JaCorey has ANY bearing whatsoever on our season if the Eagles didn’t talk Him up when they traded boykin
    ,,
If we can’t overcome an injury to a 6th round rookie who we only saw practice in pads 2 days lol, then we clearly aren’t as good as we think we are….
    ..
Only real frustrating part for me is I have no idea what to expect from Biggers…is he going to be legit comp for Watkins? Curious to see how they divide preseason reps between Jaylen and Biggers..

  70. 70 Tumtum said at 2:48 AM on August 12th, 2015:

I really would like to see Boykin outside playing press man, in this defense. The easy argument is to say it couldn’t work since that’s what the team thought. I think he would of thrived. Unfortunately with the shceme difference in Pit success or failure will not solve the argument either.

So at this point we accept, analyze, and move on.

  71. 71 wee2424 said at 9:06 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Actually I think size was a big factor. In the slot Boykin is not going to have to deal with alot of jump balls and he usually isn’t going to deal with the opposing team’s biggest receivers. The slot helps minimize his natural weakness.

I think Boykin can cover on the outside. The problem occurs where he may be good in coverage all game, but the Birds play so many snaps on D that it gives the opposing O the chance to take advantage of his size. The more plays run the more chance there is of a failure play.

He may keep Dez under wraps but then suddenly Dez beats him for a jump ball that turns out to be a big play. For a team that wants to stop big plays Chip wants to minimize that chance as much as possible and having a 5’10 CB does not minimize that.

Chip is playing a numbers game realizing at one point his height will hurt.

Chip was probably afraid of him in the RZ.

  72. 72 wee2424 said at 8:55 AM on August 11th, 2015:

BG was almost a Giant if not for a last second offer. As good as BG played last year I think a big part of the reason he stayed around was due to the lack of FA pass rushers. Eagles wanted Worrilds the year prior and when he surprisingly retired the choices were pretty thin. It’s not really mentioned much, but I think that has ALOT to do with why BG is still here.

  73. 73 Gary Barnes said at 9:06 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Oh I was shocked when Graham was re-signed and I’m a fan of him. I think you’re right.

  74. 74 GEAGLE said at 8:58 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Boykin has the cover ability to play outside.. But not suited to play our scheme. If you ask Boykin to press against Dez Bryant, he will toss Tiny Boykin out of bounds… A cover / zone team like the steelers valued Boykin. no surprise that a defense that presses didn’t trade for Boykin.. Btw, Boykin practices inside and outside for us the past 3 summers, if he was our best press outside corner he would have played outside… If a team that presses on the outside traded for Boykin I can understand questioning Chip, but that’s not what happened… What ha Penned is a team that plays a completely different style of play then we do valued him as an outside corner..
    ..
People aren’t even asking the RIGHT Questions! Should Boykin play outside in a press scheme isn’t even the question…. The REAL QUESTION IS:
    ..
Do you think Boykin could be such a great outside corner that we should switch our d census scheme to better suit Boykin skill so we can play him outside??? That’s the question…… And for me the answer to that is NO..
    .
I love that the vision is to be big physical outside corners who press and disrupt timing at the line of scrimmage. I would Not want to switch to a cover two scheme just for Boykin….. Especially since Boykin won’t be here long term… cox, Kendricks, Curry, Thornton all need to be extended after the season before Boykin..
    ..
Personally contending this year is important to me so I would have preceded keeping Boykin as depth and losing him the free agency after this season, but I do understand why they would pull the trigger on the trade for a 4th rd pick
    ..
I’m also very high on Jaylen Watkins and I think fans and media are borderline insane for ruling him out because he had a quiet rookie season… I expect the see significant and drastic growth out of Jaylen Watkins:. How a kid plays as a rookie means NOTHING.. His year two leap in Growth is what matters
    ..
There are successful outside corners around the league under 5’10…. But it’s not common to find any of the successful short outside corners plaYing in a press scheme.. This isn’t just a chip Kelly Bias, It’s pretty common that teams who want to press want big, long athletic corners to play in press schemes..

Fans see Boykin has success matching up against Dez in the slot so they think he can defend Dez when he lines up outside but that’s apples and oranges.. Spot corners don’t Press… So when the Cowboys moved Dez in th slot and we see Boykin defendIng him well, it means nothing. Boykin in the slot excebtuates his talents and hides his weakness…. If you ask Boykin to line up outside and press against Dez, Boykin is going to get tossed out of bounds as soon as the ball is snapped.
    ..
Playing inside and pressing on the outside is basically two completely different positions

  75. 75 Avery Greene said at 9:05 AM on August 11th, 2015:

  77. 77 wee2424 said at 1:10 PM on August 11th, 2015:

Agree. However I think there is ample reason as to why people are nervous about Watkins. Yes I was high on Watkins at seasons end because I don’t expect rookie CBs to really play, especially 4th round ones. Contrary to many I thought he showcased some skill against the Giants.

The reason I am worried about him is the fact that this off season which I thought would be huge for his growth has him bouncing all over the place. It seems he hasn’t found his niche which is very important in the NFL.

He reportedly was told he would move to Safety. Wolff still isn’t playing so you assume he really has his shot. Thurmond gets moved there and Watkins seems to get moved from there back to CB which at the time had alot of depth and S is arguably the thinnest spot on the roster.

Then Boykins gets traded and it’s a rookie 6th round pick that seems to have the inside track on the nickel spot over Watkins.

At the end of the season I didn’t get why people were down on him, but I do understand why people are now. I still have high hopes for him, and I do think he could be a good nickel, but this off season is a little worrisome for him.

  78. 78 Ben said at 1:27 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I agree Geagle, Boykin will never be a top flight press corner for any team, unless he has a 6 inch growth spurt.
As you also mentioned, I think he can play outside if he’s in a zone or cover two scheme but thinking Boykin could start on the outside in our press scheme is insanity IMO.

  79. 79 Tumtum said at 2:58 AM on August 12th, 2015:

The worst thing about it is that there was no reason not put him on Dez while he was smashing the rest of our DBs last year. It was a no lose situation because they were already getting smashed in the secondary. You could say that about any time in the last 6 weeks of 14′. It is a crime he never got a look.

If that’s the case, it makes Boykin even more expendable.

Btw, I’m glad i never paid to get Boykin’s name put on my old Asante jersey. Why do I own an Asante jersey? It was given to me .. and it’s authentic. Every relax.

    That’s probably a safe assumption to make…
    ..
If we are going to be at a disadvantage having a corner at safety when teams run against us, we might as well use having a corner at safety to our advantage, stay in base more and ask Thutmond to man up against the slot since he has so much experience playing slot corner…
    ..
With that said, we are still going to see some Nickel because I expect Jaylen Watkins to show big growth… I learned a while ago not to expect ANYTHING out of rookie corners. If it were up to me we would redshirt Rowe and not even see him on defense this year… But quality young ayers are supposed to show significant growth from year 1 to year 2, and from year 2 to year 3..
    ..
People are Judging Jaylen Watkins after a rookie year without even seeing what his year 2 growth looks like yet,.. Big mistake..
    ..
I have No idea wha to expect from EJ Biggers, but I am very excited about Jaylen Watkins,.. Hoping he Watkins can give us close to what we got out of Boykins sophomore season. I like Jaylen a lot. Loved him at florida and since then nothing has happened that should make me spit on the kid…
    ..
Between staying in Base defense on 3rd down and Jaylen Watkins growing in that Nickel spot, I think we will be fine this year… Watkins should be a much better player then this city is giving him credit for…

How do you judge hard working, high IQ young talents before even seeing what type of yeàr two leap they make?.. It’s like Jaylen has been completely Writen off already and I think that’s a mistake… Curious to see how his year 2 play will measure up to Boykin who had a pretty nice sophmore season in 2013… I really liked this kid coming out of Florida, and nothing has happened that should make me change my opinion…some times we have to be patient before we can even try and make a judgement on a young player…. There is probably the biggest difference between rookie year when you are a deer in the headlights and the Sophmore season where everything starts to slow down for you…. Very excited to see how much Jaylen grows over the next few seasons…. As versatile as he is, having played every position in the secondary, I would easily chose skot corner as his best position….Hopefully he stays healthy so we can see how good this kid can be…..nregrettfully I have No IDEA what to expect out of Biggers… But we,can’t afford too many more injuries at slot corner.

I feel like in some aspects his growth has been stunted by his versatility. On one hand he could be more developed if he was able to focus in one one position.. But on the other hand it’s so damn impressive that he could move all over the secondary playing inside, outside and safety, and that type of versatility comes in very handy when injuries start to pile up..
    ..
Chip kelly believes rookies should spend their first year focused on learning 1 position, and eventually cross train playërs at different positions in future years.. Yet chip thought so highly of this kids football IQ that as a rookie they had him taking reps at multiple positions last year… Now it looks like Jaylen will get an opportunity to show what he can really do, at the position that fits him the best…. I’m very excited about seeing Jaylen. it’s a Testament to the depth of this roster that we could trade away such a quality Nickel corner, lose another rookie Nickel to an Injury, yet we still have yoûng talent im excited to see fill that role..
    ..
I LOVE that Chip kelly is building a secondary filled with DBs who are all Capable of playing multiple positions. This will come in handy if injuries really start to pile up.. Amd it also comes in handy in having a bunch of different subpackages we can throw at opponents… Even if we lost all our nickel corners, we have a safety in Thurmond who has a ton of experience defending the slot and was one of the most Talemted Nickel corners in the NFL.. We have Maxwell and Nolan who both have shown they can play inside corner at the NFL level… And our other safety Jenkins was a first round pick who played CB on a Super Bowl champion team as a rookie…
    ..
really excited about this years defense and im very comfortable going into a season counting on Watkins in the slot …… Full disclosure I have NO clue what to expect from Biggers. no idea If he is legit competition for Jaylen Watkins or if he is an inferior talent, but at this point it’s Jayens job to lose….
    ..
Randall Evans I don’t expect to get anything out of, my guess is he spends a year on practice squad,

Different corners are suited to play in different schemes.. In our scheme he is much better suited to play inside…but he is suited for a bigger role in the Steelers scheme… Even tho he made dumb comments on the way out, I’m still rooting for the kid. He is in the AFC, and he gets a chance to play the role he wanted… Good for hm….this was a rare trade that worked out for all parties… But personally, I would have preferred to keep him for the year and lose him for nothing in free agency.
    ..
I doubt we sigń many new free agents next year because,we have so many of yoûng players we have to extend, so if we don’t sign any free agents, but lose a kid like boykin to a team like the steelers that would value him as a starter, we could have ended up getting a compensatory pick close to the 4th rd pick the steelers are going to owe us…the ONE positive is if you are a Jaylen Watkins fan, keeping Boykin could have stunted another year of his growth… With Boykin gone, this is a great opportunity for Jaylen to step up and develop into the kid we spent an early 4th Rd pick on..

Has anyone seen any reports on how the Eagles are going to treat JaCorey Shepard in terms of a roster spot?
    .
If I’m not mistaken, if the Eagles DONT want injured JaCorey to count as a roster spot, we have to expose him to waivers where a team can steal him from us if they really beleve in his talent…. In today’s sports, a first ACL injury is not the big deal it used to be a decade ago, and after the Browns stole Jordan Poyer from us who they still value, I’d hate to see someone else steal JaCorey from us…. Probably prefer to Sacrafice a roster spot rather then risk losing him

  120. 120 RichC #culturables said at 9:59 AM on August 11th, 2015:

What’s the objection to simply IR’ing him?

  121. 121 sonofdman said at 10:05 AM on August 11th, 2015:

I think the rule is that prior to the first cutdown date (when the roster is cut down to 75 players), if you want to put a player on IR, he must first be put through waivers. Traditionally, teams let other teams do this without poaching players, but in recent years there has been a number of times in which another team (usually the Patriots) claimed a player on waivers that a team was trying to put on IR.

So if the Eagles want to be sure they do not lose Shepard they need to keep him on the 90 man roster until the first cutdown date and then they can put him on IR. I am guessing that they will sacrifice the roster spot because it is not worth the risk of another team stealing Shepard.

  122. 122 GEAGLE said at 10:10 AM on August 11th, 2015:

Thanks for clearing it up.. I agree, eat the Roster spot. no point in letting some team poach him from us. it’s not like we have a płethera of late round corners that we hit on… Especially since, there seems to be a pretty signifcant DISCREPENCY between JaCoreys talent and Randall Evans who seems destined for the Practice squad.

So Nelson had this to say about Bradford:

“It’s a receiver-friendly ball,” “He puts balls in a position where guys can always pluck them. It’s a ball that comes with a great spiral, not so much heat but it’s very accurate and it has good speed behind it. And it looks good coming out of his hand. That’s my definition of a receiver-friendly ball. The quarterback throws it, it’s comfortable coming out of his hands and you can see it all the way through.”

So the Rams receivers were really that bad or Agholor isn’t correct on exactly how fast he can sling it.

  132. 132 eagleyankfan said at 10:48 AM on August 11th, 2015:

“never” – thats a bold statement. If you look at the video where Bradford threw 15+ yards to his WRs there were an insane amount of drops. “We thought that Randle and McFadden together could re-create Demarco for us”-Jerruh… LOL GOOD LUCK WITH THAT HEE Haw, Hee Haw…
    ..
McFadden has barely practiced because both his hamstrings hurt, dude has the weakest soft Tissues ever,,.Fragile wimp needs to switch to “2 ply”
    ..
Now dallas is saying Randle is banged up and might not play for them on Thursday
    ..
And if I’m not mistaken Hasnt their #3 RB also been dealing with injuries? Not only do their RBs SUCK, but they are also fragile.
    .
Joseph Randle better take some preseason reps.. He is going to find that playing in the NFL will be a completely different game then it was last year. no one respected him last year. Teams were happy when Murray needed a breather.. Last year Murrays presence got Randle used to playing the game averaging 7 yards per carry! Lol that Doesmt exactky prepare you very well for life as a #1 back,. It’s safe to say that he won’t be getting anything like the looks he got last year when he was getting 7 yards per carry.. Facing defenses will be a night and day difference compared to what he faced last year… It’s safe to say they wanted AP when they even put his name on their website which is blatant tampering…they didn’t get a RB in the draft…. And now Jerry will reduce himself to a bum, digging thru the trash to find a RB that gets cut lol……
    ..
The one year these idiots committed to the run, they had their best season in a decade.. Instead of BUILDING on that new blueprint for success, and improving the run game or at least adequately replacing Murray, they have managed to significantly weaken their rushiñg Attack, which should lead to them asking too much of Romo, which we all know Doesmt end well for Dallas.
    ..
I can’t wait to see who they pick up off waivers lol… Bryce Brown keeps fumbling, he had lke 3 last week and has been demoted down the depth chart, now behind a 5th round pick… If he doesn’t stop fumbling he is going to get cut… It would be q DREAM for Jerry to pick up Bryce Brown, and allow our gritty beastly front 7 to play against a RB Tney know is susceptible to fumbling… Fingers crossed Bryce Brown becomes a cowboy!!!!
    ..
Lol signing Trent Richardson might be better then what Dallas has.
    ..
We have 3 RBs, and all 3 of them are better then anything Dallas has lol
    ..
the Eagles defense had more sacks then every defense except the top rated Bills…if Dallas will need Romo to carry them, instead of letting romo be a game manager, that will provide more opportunities to our Nasty Front 7 that will be even better then the front 7 we saw last year, to drill Romo in his bionic Back…. I loved the memory of Romo being scared to death of our pass rush on Thanksgving, seeng Ghosts and diving n the ground in the pocket waiving the white flag because he is so afraid of our pass rush… can’t wait to see what our Defense does to the dallas pffense This year…. Probably not a’good idea to make Cox, Bennie Logan and the Gamg feel disrespected by flying a plane ocher our PRactive… Wish I could teleport to week 2 against Dallas right now
    ..
WEEK 2 vs Dallas NEEDS to be the Most Physical Brand of football the eagles have played in YEARS!… Wear their defense down with our tempo and physicak punishing Runners hitting defenders at the end of every play, while our Front puts on a show against the Dallas OL dominating them AGAIN!

  137. 137 Avery Greene said at 11:09 AM on August 11th, 2015:

  138. 138 GEAGLE said at 11:29 AM on August 11th, 2015:

It’s going to look good against the lessor defense… It’s going to run into a Brick wall when they are asked to go up against the Front 7’s of
    Eagles
    skins
    Bills
    jets
    pats
    Dolphins
    ..
When you face Elite Defensive Lines like the Eagles, and Bills, your offensive line if you are lucky, will be able to hang with our DL, but our DL will command attention.. Even the Cowboys won’t block Marcel Dareus of Bennie logan, Cox, Donkey Kong Suh with 1 man all game… Their OL may be good enough to hang with the DLs they face, but then it will be up to the Runningback to be able to beat the linebackers….and asking Randle to shake free of Kiko,Kemdricks,Jenkins, Meco all game is just silly…
    ,.
There is No way the Dallas OL can handle our DL AND LB’s man to man across the board all game.. Our DL protects our LBs as well as any in the league.. And allowing Kiko to fly around untouched, next to KEndricks where you see those plays where it looks like Kemdricks was shot out of a cannon is going to be so So Nasty!
    .
You can bet Randle is not going to enjoy playing against Kiko and KEndricks flying around untouched…. The Dallas OL is good enough to make Randle look good against the bad or average defensive fronts.. But when they face the ELITE front 7s, the RB will have to beat out LB on his own at times… And I sure as hell wouldnt bet on Randle consistently making Kiko or KEndricks miss, or running them over… jerry Jones put himself in position to take that Gamble, and he is going to pay the price,..
What makes it so crazy is they finally ran the ball, but Romo in a game manager role and it actually worked for them, and the next year they revert to this? Asking Romo to carry them again? maybe you believe in Joseph Randle, but come on, pair him with somethng ng more decent then McFadden…I can’t believe what Dallas did to its run game..

From what we know, CK wants his defense to present the same look to the opposing QB every time, if possible. He doesn’t want the QB to know the defense called as soon as he approaches the line of scrimmage. If you bring in a 5’9″ to play the slot, there is no guess work for the QB; the QB identifies the “nickel” immediately and calls the plays they have been practicing against it all week. These plays are intended to beat the “nickel” no matter how good the “nickel” CB is; advantage offense. This is not the scheme CK wants to put on the field.

  196. 196 GEAGLE said at 12:48 PM on August 11th, 2015:

Each run play should end with Murray or Mathews delivering Blows to the defenders… Our run game was great with Shady, but it’s safe to say we are significantly upgrading the physicality of our run game… Our tempo alone wore defenses down, I can’t imagine how much more we can wear defenses now that we are adding physical, punishing running style to our tempo attack..
    ..
After the Eagles pick up two first downs and defenders start sucking wind, it’s going to suck having to tackle a fresh explosive 230lb backup..,
    ..
We are going from a great finesse run game to hopefully a great physical punishing run game… The added physicality should contribute to wearing down defenders til they look like JJ Watt, sucking wind, begging for a substitute.
    ..
Becoming more physical is always a good thing… Going from a Finesse run game to a violent style of running should make for a fun season… Protect Bradford using the run game tonight not expose him to hits more then we need to, and get out young new starting lineman going and let them build some confidence (all lineman like to run block more then pass blocking)

  197. 197 Avery Greene said at 12:58 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I’m a fan of a punishing run game with a great defense. The only element we need to make sure we have now is a QB that is both accurate and mistake free (for the most part).

  198. 198 GEAGLE said at 1:06 PM on August 11th, 2015:

If we don’t turn the ball over, we should be tough to out score,.
    ..
This is a dumb question and I wish I didn’t have to ask this but inexplicably we happen to find the only QBs who don’t understand how the fall on their ass and slide. So, anyone know if Bradford knows how to slide?.., it would be a step in the right direction to finally have a QB that knows how to fall in his ass to protect himself..I want so desperately for Sam to stay healthy and see what he is really capable of
    ..

  199. 199 Avery Greene said at 1:07 PM on August 11th, 2015:

Lets hope so. At worst, he should be able to get rid of the ball faster than the previous ones. I can’t wait to see him in game action.

Only a few more days until you can get your sample of that. Too excited myself.

  201. 201 GEAGLE said at 1:17 PM on August 11th, 2015:

If we have ANOTHER QB who doesn’t know how to slide and protect himself, then I give up!! All these years I see ever other QB run around, gain yards and slide to protect himself coming away unscathed at the end of the run and it’s so damn frustrating for defenders.. Yet when our QBs slide, they look about as graceful as a grand piano falling out of a 3rd story window… Someone should make a highlight video of all the “attempted slides” by eagle QBs the past couple years… Vick was a mess, ever time it was something else.. Bless Foles Heart but his slides would look like crash landings…. Nothing more frustrating then watching Rogers or Wilson burn you.with their legs and then cleanly gracefully slide and get up untouched while we lose QBs to injury for weeks because they dive head first to the ground like morons
    ..
I don’t ask for much, simple things… I don’t know that I can take another QB that doesn’t know how to slide and protect himself

Thanks Tommy, always enjoy reading your take on everything Eagles.

I was on PE.COM today and saw we just signed a CB.

I found this youtube video of this kid and he seems pretty solid.
This was from a game against Standford and it just so happens to feature a play where Etrz catches a pass and delivers a nice hit against Anthony.
You gotta love Ertz and I really like this bottom of the roster churning by Chip.
    Take a look and enjoy.

Well there is multiple things with Mathis. 34 year old, coming off and achilles’ tear, had a set back in recovery, and is questionable for not just the season opener but for part of the season. So he wont be there for when they meet the Eags and on top of it I don’t see him being who he was pre injury.

He lists all the positions Cox can play. Most other coaches would simply say “Cox can play anywhere”. It’s also kind of amazing on how he knows all the players dimensions and ratings. There is no(and never will be) and interviewer who will out fox him with questions. Impossible. Now — just translate all that into a SB and rename the streets to Chip Kelly Way.

Then you read about Aldon Smith and praise Chip for the whole #culture thing.

This is another one of those instances. Jesus, I dont know how I would react. I understand that this was probably some freak accident and player scuffles happen every day, but holy crap, the most important player on their roster will miss games because of this. And truly, can anyone imagine that this would happen under Chip, or even under Andy?

Maybe the character thing has gone overboard, but its nice to have your locker room under freaking control, and at least to some extend be a cohesive unit with one goal. Chip has our guys buying in to what he’s trying to achieve, not getting arrested for the 6th time, breaking each others jaws with sucker punches or starting fights to get out of practice early. #culture!

Chip spoke about our Nickel situation..praised Jayken Watkins, and said that Watkins, Biggers and now Eric Rowe will compete for the Nickel spot… If they are moving Rowe into the nickel completion, I assume Denzel Rice is strictly taking outside reps……Jaylen Watkins needs to be watched closely in the preseason, curious to see how much playing time Rowe sees in the slot during the colts game, that will tell us how serious they are about Rowe competing for the nickel spot..
    ,,,
Couplin is out with an injury til Monday, so we won’t see him in the colts game which sucks, but Wolff should get plenty of game time..
    ..
Kiko hasn’t passed the concussion protocol yet, but he hasnt been ruled out
    For Colts game either,
    ..
Chip also claims that Thurmond has Forced the most turnovers this summer and that he seems to always be around the ball,. I’m very excited to get a look at our starting DBs.., but I’m also hoping to get to see a lot of Wolff, Rowe, Watkins and Rice in the Colts game… And Taylor Hart with the DL

dude if Hart can truly contribute off the bench this year . . . man that would be huge.

  294. 294 GEAGLE said at 2:43 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I really liked him in college and he is a kid that came to us already having two gap experience.. Hart is going to make the team, what I’m waiting to see is will Hart take Bair’s roster spot, or will we keep Hart as a 7th DL and not dress one every week?… Bair can play, but our DL has been sturdy and durable, but there is precedent for keeping 7 DL’s,.. We kept 7 in 2013, which cut down to 6 later when we traded away Sopoaga..

I do NOT want to cut Bair. He is cheap and he can play. Also blocked a kick on ST… I was pleasantly surprised with “papa Bair’s” game

  295. 295 b3nz0z said at 2:49 PM on August 11th, 2015:

it’s tough, for sure. but i’d go with hart because he has a chance to be a starter one day (if simply by virtue of not being ruled out as a potential starter), whereas bair is likely as good as he will ever be. that could end up being a very strong rotation with hart spelling thornton

  296. 296 sonofdman said at 4:07 PM on August 11th, 2015:

  298. 298 GEAGLE said at 9:46 PM on August 11th, 2015:

I actually haven’t heard anything.., but there really is nothing to hear when it comes to our OL and DL… Chip doesn’t let them go full blast against each other., he talks about them needing to “cooperate” with each other trying to practice technique without blasting each other as hard as they can..
    ..
I assume this is why we don’t hear any performance update about any of our Right Guards each day… For guys like Hart and Tobin, Gardner, Moffit, the preseason performance will be EVERYTHING.. OL and DL need to fundamentally be able to move the man in front of them, we won’t get an accurate glimpse of their ability until the preseason.. Impossible to judge those positions if they aren’t going full blast, trying not to hurt anyone..
    ..
If the DL was playing Full contact, ever day we would read about how Cox completely dominated practice lol..

Can’t wait till sunday to get some answers.. guys i really want to go back and watch all their preseason snaps:
    1) Marcus Smith
    2) Jaylen Watkins
    3) Wolff
    4) Hart
    5) Tobin
    6) Gardner
    7) Moffit
    8) Denzel Rice
    9) Agholar
    10) Couplin (won’t play Sunday)
    …,
I’m so much more interested in seeing what the young back ups do.. I have NEVER been so excited to watch the 2nd and 3rd string players of a preseason game

    2 – I’d take the under.
First game is tough. No need to get crazy. Plus they have a couple other backs they need to make decisions on. Give them as much time as possible.

    3 – I’d take the over.
    1 per quarter (at least?).

    4 – I’d take the under?
Oooh this is going to be hard. There’s shots of Bradford, Sanchez, Tebow, and Barkley that are needed. Then you can’t forget Luck, Gore, Johnson, and random players from both teams laughing on the side line.

    5 – I’d take the over.

Geno then had a death in the family and wasn’t able to go to the camp and Enemkpali demanded that Geno reimburse him. Geno reportedly agreed to reimburse him, although there may have been miscommunication there, and when Geno didn’t pay IK quick enough to his liking that prompted the fact.

That was because he was able to come in as a changeup. Cole had a variety of moves while BG mainly stays with the bull rush. OTs will get used to it making him less effective.

Not going to lie. I am very worried about the slot CB position being a liability. You could just stay in base and let Jenkins/Thurmond do it, but then you only have one deep safety. That’s pretty scary when you’re against the likes of Odell Beckham and Victor Cruz at the same time. If you do keep two deep safeties, then you either need to be creative (and let’s be honest, Billy Davis and Chip Kelly are not creative on defense) or use a marginal talent like Jaylen Watkins, E.J. Biggers, Randall Evans, or Denzel Rice. If those guys were so good, then Shepherd wouldn’t have already taken the lead for the job. The creative thing to do would be to move Maxwell into the slot in nickel with Rowe and Carroll on the outside, or play musical chairs and rearrange those three in any other way. I do not see creativity from Chip and Davis on defense, so I wouldn’t hold my breath. Expect offenses to light the Eagles up over the middle.

In my opinion, the best NFL coach is Pete Carroll because he is the most creative. He has a 330 lb. DE on one side and a 240 lb. DE on the other. That is letting talented players dictate the scheme. Not the other way around. And that is where Chip falls short.

    Serious situation… need advice:

My job has me in Florida. I have Comcast down here because my wife refuses to get anything other type of provider, therefore I am not going to be able to get all the games (direct tv is the only nfl Sunday ticket provider). I have WiFi a smart TV, smart phone, and laptop. There has to be a way I can somehow stream Eagles games via internet live on one of my devices in today’s age. I just don’t know how. Advice for a struggling die hard fan anybody?

This has worked in the past: http://firstrowsportes.eu

Thank you. That site has been recommended to me a few times. I guess I’m just having anxiety that I’m going to settle on that and then game day I’m going to use it and it won’t work. While I like technology my faith in it is sometimes low.

There are plenty of sites. Just google streaming football. They’re mostly from Europe.

Also you can get the Sunday Ticket on Playstation for a couple hundred bucks.

What speeds are you getting with Comcast? Most free streams are low quality but it’s better than nothing at all. PPK linked the most used one and it’s reliable. Just be warned that sometimes you don’t get the USA coverage but the EU (skysports) coverage.

  387. 387 Bert's Bells said at 10:24 PM on August 11th, 2015:

PS: UK coverage is way better.

Just less of the stupid biased analysts makes it that much better.

Fewer commercials too. They breakdown the previous possession during the US breaks.

xbox one and ps4 offer the Sunday ticket for what I believe is $250 if you happen to own those gaming systems.

  391. 391 wee2424 said at 9:14 AM on August 12th, 2015:

From what I have read you have to get screened to have that. For example if you live in apartments that won’t allow a satellite dish then you are permitted to have that service. I live in a condo that does allow satellite dishes so direct TV I’ll not allow me to have that service. Do you know anything about this?

Set up a sling box with someone who will be watching the game. I do it to my house when I’m at the shore during Phillies games

  393. 393 wee2424 said at 9:11 AM on August 12th, 2015:

I was researching slingbox. Some sites said it carries Fox, other sites said Fox opted out of Fox. Clarity please?

  394. 394 Rockedupeaglesfan said at 9:31 AM on August 12th, 2015:

Hmm I’m not sure how an individual channel could opt out since you are basically watching your home (or friends) TV remotely. You even bring your guide and remote control up on the screen to navigate. I’m at my in-laws beach house for the rest if the week an I used it last night to watch hard knocks without a problem. I’m sure I’ll have it up again before the week is done and I’ll test it out with Fox and let you know.

I fired the sling box up last night and had Fox on, no problems. I think it’s a pretty good option. My brother in law even used it when he was out of the country

NFL game pass (or the US equivalent).

  399. 399 xmbk said at 7:24 AM on August 12th, 2015:

NFL Network has a pass you can buy. You’ll be able to watch the games when you want, but there are weird restrictions (can’t be another game on live broadcast at the time). You have to watch over the internet. It’s ok, the gaming platforms are probably better. Directv is best, I switched to that. Can’t understand why anyone would feel allegiance to Comcast. The streaming is highly unreliable.

I use this for all sports. easy to navigate. you may deal with less-than-ideal streams but it works and is free. Just stream on laptop > HDMI into tv and grab a beer
