Pederson Talks in Mobile

Posted: January 27th, 2016 | Author: | Filed under: Philadelphia Eagles | 67 Comments »

Doug Pederson met with the press down here in Mobile.

The first thing he announced is that the Eagles hired a DL coach. They tabbed Chris Wilson from the college ranks to come in and work with the D-linemen. Wilson has been all over the place and has had success with multiple teams/players.

2015 USC
2014 USC
2013 Georgia
2012 Miss State (Def Coordinator)
2011 Miss State (Def Coordinator)
2010 Miss State

From 2005-2009, Wilson was the DEs coach for Oklahoma.

This seems like a very good hire. Wilson knows how to teach young players. He has DC experience, which means he understands the big picture and how the DL fits into the overall defense.

Pederson has a lot of NFL guys on his staff so I think it is good to add someone from college. You want a mixture of backgrounds.

Pederson didn’t say anything too definitive in his talk today. Here are some quick hits:

  • When asked about Sports Science, Pederson gave a very honest answer and said he didn’t know much about it and would have to learn more about that.
  • He still didn’t want to publicly commit to the 4-3, but everything says that will be the base look.
  • Pederson said he wasn’t sure if the Eagles would have a FB on the roster.
  • He said he wanted Jason Peters back on the team and thinks JP can be a good LT for several more years.
  • Pederson said Jordan Matthews could play in the slot as well as outside.

And what about Sam Bradford?

Pederson said he had talked to Sam Bradford. He said he “looked forward to coaching him.” Since Pederson is new to meeting with the media under this kind of scrutiny, we don’t know if that was a verbal misstep or a huge hint. The way it came out, you felt Pederson was saying he wanted and expected Bradford back. But Pederson isn’t used to talks like this. He simply may have been trying to say the right thing without making any type of strong commitment.

Someone asked about Carson Wentz. Pederson said he was impressed with what he saw and that he was looking forward to meeting with Wentz.

*****

Jeffrey Lurie is in town. He’s supposedly here to take a look at some players and to take the whole coaching staff out to dinner.

You wonder about a couple of other angles. First, could he be here to interview some candidates for the personnel job? There are a lot of people in Mobile looking for a job. Howie Roseman, Pederson and Lurie are all here. Would make some sense.

No rumors for now, but let’s see what happens.

You also wonder if Lurie is here to meet Carson Wentz, the QB prospect. The Eagles have a key decision to make in regard to Sam Bradford. It would be easier to let him walk if you felt strongly that Wentz was a serious target at pick 13. Normally you have draft prospects come to Philly, but the decision on Bradford will have to be made by late February, way before prospects visit teams.

I’m just guessing with Lurie and Wentz. That’s not based on a scoop or any type of rumor. Simply some speculation.

*****

Speaking of meetings…

Wentz and Whitehair are arguably the two best offensive prospects in Mobile. Both were terrific on the field today. I don’t know if the Eagles will pick either player or have strong interest in either, but they are checking them out closely and should be impressed with what they see.

I’ll write more on them when I do my Senior Bowl notes.

*****

One Eagles scout talked to DE Shawn Oakman.

Another scout talked to DB Sean Davis.

Oakman is a huge, talented player from Baylor. In the summer of 2014, he was thought to be an All-American and likely Top 10 pick. He is 6-8, 267 with huge hands and long arms. Oakman is a good athlete with pass rush ability. Now for the bad news. He’s an underachiever that is very frustrating. If you got him in the mid-rounds, he’s worth the risk. The Eagles have talked to him and Carl Nassib, a pair of tall, long DEs. Jim Schwartz has had success with long pass rushers.

Davis is 6-1, 201. He played CB and S for Maryland. I don’t know enough about him and the new staff to have a strong feel for where they would project him.

My notes on Day 2 – South practice.

I’ll post the North notes on Thursday morning.

I mean more so as in I’m afraid he’ll be eaten alive eventually. Crazy he was an offensive coordinator for an NFL team and seems so uncomfortable (nervous?) with the press.

By the time the season ended I was actually happy it was over, exhausting year….
    ..
The offseason might be more interesting than this past season…. Tired of pissing away seasons and getting dirt kicked in our face every year. At least we no longer have a coach that the entire nationally media hated, so we will no longer have to hear everyone rip us whenever there is a hint of adversity. If we have to suck, suck flying undr the radar, instead of sucking with a coach the media was so happy to see fail and constantly rip us for it.
    ..
Having a HC who seems to bore the national media is a welcome change from Chip being the face of our franchise. After a 4-12 season, THAT was the time to rebuild, now I have no Patience for it and im tired of gettng our teeth kicked in, and not winning such a weak division is Embarressing..

  39. 39 Anders said at 4:19 AM on January 28th, 2016:

  40. 40 D3FB said at 5:23 AM on January 28th, 2016:

I don’t see why they wouldn’t still give up their 1 in 2012 then. It would be devalued due to the wait, and you now would have the guy you see as your franchise QB so you’re betting you won’t be picking terribly high.

2013-2015 Bucs Director of Pro Personnel/Senior Personnel Exec
Since July: Ravens Coaching Assitant/Opponent Analysis

With the organization during the Reid glory years. Got promotion with Jets in March 2008 (before any of the Licht crap happened, before Heckert left) to become Assistant GM to Mike Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum gave Howie his first NFL job, and those two are close. So he served as the number 2 to a cap guy. When the Tannenbaum regime came to an end and the Jets didn’t promote him he went and worked under Mark Dominik (also a Howie friend) in TB. Survived Dominik’s firing and worked under Licht (who he worked w/ during time w/ Eagles but who fucking hates Howie). Was let go in May. Now in BS role in Baltimore likely due to connections with Harbaugh.

Moving to some zone coverages, having ROWE and Maxwell. I would assume that the CB we look for in the draft will be a speed Deamon, someone who can really run to add to our Secondary
    ..
no idea what style of OL Doug is planning on using.. No idea if we will want the OL to employ different techniques than what chip wanted, or if they will allow Stoutland to keep the continuity of a zone blocking scheme with the techniques we have been using Will be stick with chips smaller, mobile, zone OL scheme, or will he prefer the Andy Reid, Big Road grading power Guards which i would probably prefer since we have a smaller center?
    ..
ILB is a pretty serious need when none of our 3 projected starting ILBs made it thru the season Healthy… Sure they have Meco on the bench but I don’t mind clearing that cap space and adding a cheap 5th round backüp.
    ..
edge rushers are crucial, see Denver Broncos, but with BG, VINNY, Barwin and Ms2, we are a little too crowded to invest in a DE with our top 100 draft picks… Maybe it’s better to go into this season with our 4 edge rushers, łet Schwartz evaluate MS2 and the group for a season, and if they aren’t up to par we can look to add more DE Talemt next year.. Although edge rusher is one of the premier positions that you can’t ever be upset about adding new Talent… What works well about our DE’s in a 4-3 is that with BG and Currys inside pass rush (DT) experience under chip, we can roll out a potent “NASCAR Package” in obvious passing 3rd downs putting Barwin(or MS2), BG, Cox, and Curry on the field together and let them hunt (mix in some wide 9)
    ..
Secondary is probably better than anything we seen since the last solid corner, Assante Samuel left us… But the secondary still has some Bulding to do that will take at least two offseasons to have the starters and Backups we want in place.. Need more talented CB depth (especially if we lose both Walt and Nolan). A CB with some serious speed, a Hitter to start bringing some BOOM to our defense
    ..
We can always use another Talented DT especially in a 4-3 (scary to think how happy Cox must be to know he will explode in a 4-3 and he has his college coach as the new DL coach. Better pay Cox before Mohhamed Wilkerson signs his free agent deal or we will end up stuck paying Crazy money

Defensive roster needs some work, but if our 3 yoûng LBs can stay healthy this season, we should be much closer to a Nasty defense, then we are to needing to rebuild it
    ..
On Offense we need 2 Offensive Lineman in the draft… For me, I’m hoping we can land a kid who can be a high level starting Guard, but who also has plenty Center experience to move into Kelce’s center spot if he misses time with injury. And we need a kid who can eventually fill in for Lane at RT when he replaces JP on the other side which is probably still a year or two away. if we get some real starting Guard talemts, Barbre, Barbre and Tobin becone pretty solid Backup depth.. Hopefully the Bunch kid and the Andrews kid who backed up Kelce this year can surprise us..
    ..
I know that this isn’t a popular opinion, but we probably don’t have as Big of a NEED at WR this year as we think…. AGHOLAR is a talemted Kat I wouldn’t get against figuring it out.. jordan and Ertz are going to flourish especially if they can build on the chemistry they formed with Sammy boy. Both Ertz, and Jordan should have a big year in this offense. The andy Reidish offense should use Sproles as a pass catching weapon way better than what chip did…. A lot of Great players they ran for westbrook and Jamaal Charles that should get more out of him in the passing game than chip ever did. We will probably draft a WR, but doubt it will happen before like round 5
    ..
A lot of important needs to fill, be foolish to create more Needs when we have so much to do this offseason.. Fill the immediate needs this pffseason, and next year we can create more holes like cutting Murray, JP and maybe Maxwell, and we can address the new needs we create next year..
    ..
The only way to fix chips mess is by having some BIGTIME drafts the next two years..
    ..
I would only sigń 1 free agent this year, a starting upgrade at a key position whether it’s OL, safety, whatever.. But I would prefer that the free agent we sigh will have worked closely with one of our Coaches, don’t want to pay playërs we don’t know very well. I want us to invest in a Guy who Doug Pederson, Schwart, or Reicht have experience working closely with. A guy who we know his personality well before bringing him in our lockerroom… Like a KC player Doug knows well, or a Charger playet Reicht knows we can trust to pay and allow into our locker room…. leave Free agency alone, spend our cap paying our own Talent instead of bringing in outsiders we only know from a far
    ..
Two good quality drafts, and we should have a team built around SAM that we can really compete with

  53. 53 Fufina said at 9:23 AM on January 28th, 2016:

Seriously man break down your posts… is impossible to respond to 10 different strands of thinking in any kind of logical way.

I will pick out the DE one… Totally disagree on it. If the QB you want is not available at 13, DE would be one of my highest priorities if the right player was there. We have a range of good pass rushers on the outside, but no ‘great’ ones that require extra attention all game round, and those are the guys that take a good defense to being a great one.

Smith has not proven anything, BG/Barwin are good solid pass rushers who will get home when schemed or when pass coverage hold up enough to get home. Curry can and probably will rush from DT when on 3rd and long. There is plenty of scope and snaps to add a premier DE if availible.

A lot of fans drool when they see the name GRONK, but he will never be able to live up to his legendary brother
    ,
What are the odds that the #2 QB falls to #13? Slim to none?
    ..
Id give us a better chance at landing Carson Wentz if we keep Bradford instead of letting him walk… If we go into the draft with No QB, every franchise will know that they have to leap frog the Eagles in the draft to get the QB they want… heck, teams leaped ahead of us to steal Dion Jordan, what’s going to happen if the #2’QB prospects gets to #10 or #11, someone will leap frog Us and steal him. Yet if we keep Bradford, a team picking behind us won’t view us a threat they have to move ahead of to secure their QB..
    ..
Ideally we keep SAM and draft a QB in the next two drafts, ESPECIALLY if the rumors about SAM possibly preferring to sign a short term extension are true

  57. 57 Fufina said at 9:16 AM on January 28th, 2016:

  61. 61 Gary Barnes said at 9:54 AM on January 28th, 2016:

The obvious point is Roseman is in charge again. To have Roseman directly involved in hiring the new HC and hiring a new HC and staff before hiring this new “personnel guy” makes it clear whoever they hire will report to Roseman and likely be a lesser light in the personnel world. Any heavy hitter personnel guy would have a job already and/or would not likely want to work under Roseman i.e. they would want final say on personnel.

I’ve made it clear I think that is another mistake by Lurie and Roseman will not be capable enough to mold a highly competitive team especially with a HC and personnel guy selected more for not making waves than actually being excellent at their jobs.

This reminds me of the Phillies under Monty/Amaro or the Flyers under Snider/Holmgren. Sure, Lurie might be uncomfortable with type A achievers like Chip and might want more of a family atmosphere, but the bottom line is the Eagles need to win and finally bring home the Lombardi. Lurie is obviously comfortable with Roseman as has been proven multiple times since Roseman is the sole survivor in numerous front office shake-ups. Now all the responsibility is on Roseman; if he fails, Lurie better be prepared to finally fire him as all the excuses are now gone.

  62. 62 D3FB said at 10:24 AM on January 28th, 2016:

I don’t think anyone is under any illusions that Roseman is getting another coach.

If the personnel man is brought in to effectively be the head scout and Howie is in charge of draft and cap strategy (which is the model they seem to be going for) I’m not sure how that’s not hiring guy to do best job. Highly touted guys fail at GM all the time.

Doug may not be the most exciting HC of all time, but you have to admit that the coaching staff top to bottom is by far the strongest we’ve had in a decade.

  63. 63 Gary Barnes said at 11:10 AM on January 28th, 2016:

I do not follow your first point about Roseman getting another coach. Seems like he got exactly what he wanted; Chip gone and a HC he can control/over-rule in Pederson.

The point is Roseman will have final say over everyone including this new personnel guy or head scout as you call him. To me, that is a mistake since Roseman’s track record when in charge is spotty at best; some good, but more mediocre or bad.

If Roseman is your GM, give him the title, state clearly he has the power and stop playing games. Then, if it fails which I think it will again, have the guts to finally fire him and focus on finding better fits for your front office roles. Roseman may succeed and bring home the trophy during his tenure, I’ll be happy to eat major crow if he does, but I have serious doubts.

Pederson is an unknown, but what we do know is he is a first time HC who clearly has limited power in the organizational structure and one of the major reasons he was hired was due to him being ok with that arrangement. The hire was a over-reaction in response to Chip and appears to have been their 3rd choice anyway.

The coaching staff does represent some hope and appears to be good, but we have no idea what systems they’ll be running or how they’ll work together and with the players yet.

Maybe this will serve only to highlight how little I understand, but looking at our personnel, I see safeties that can cover, corners that are more strong than fast and a middle linebacker that has impressive range. Are we staffed to run a Tampa 2 defense?

Tampa 2 is dead. Even Lovie and Marinelli only run it sparingly.

It’s likely going to be a mixture of 43 over and under with some wide 9 sprinkled in. Coverages will run full gamut from cover 2, cover 3, man free, 2 man under. Very little blitzing.

Interesting. When I heard Schwartz say attack, I translated that as blitz. But the attacking will come from the wide 9 sets and the over/under?

Also, I moved the comment over to the new thread, so I am going to move your reply over there too.
